Annual homes tour Dec. 4
The Green Spring Garden Club’s annual Christmas Homes Tour has become one of the signature events of the holiday season. The tour is scheduled 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4.
6
The Lightfoot House, the new home of the Colin Campbell, president of Colonial Williamsburg, and his wife Nancy Campbell, will be open to the public as part of the tour. So will the President’s House at the College of William & Mary, home to Taylor and Helen Reveley. Clark Taggart of Colonial Williamsburg will design the arrangements inside the Lightfoot House. Don Haynie created a pineapple arrangement for the central passage. Other buildings open for the tour are the The Tayloe House and the Grissell Hay Lodging House, in the Historic Area. All four of the buildings date to the 1700s. The fifth building is The Williamsburg Masonic Lodge which was built in 1931 on the site of the “Old Mason’s Hall.” Preparation for the tour begins several weeks in advance. Dozens of garden club members and volunteers serve as house hostesses, and a corps of floral designers from area clubs as well as several professional floral designers join to make the homes look their holiday best. Colonial Williamsburg’s landscape staff decorates the exterior of its buildings. The Williamsburg Masonic Lodge will have four professionals creating holiday floral designs inside and out and include Robert Allen Hunt, Marge and Joe Holler, Marion Baker, and Don Haynie. The fellowship hall in the lodge’s lower level will be fancifully decorated with sugar plums, sweet treats, and special floral arrangements accented by a collection of antique pewter serving pieces. Other artifacts on display in the lodge includes a hand carved replica of the magnificent Masters Chair from 1768. This replica was carved in the Hays Cabinetmaker shop in 1992. The original is on display at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 2010

It’s rare that people get a chance to visit The W&M President’s House. Those who visit will get to see the Reveley’s Christmas tree decorated with ornaments made by students and given to presidents of the college over the years. Although most of the furnishings in the house belong to the college, the baby grand piano is one item the couple has added. Several members of the Reveley family play the piano and the couple frequently invites students to play the piano to entertain guests. Floral arrangements will be created by College of W&M greenhouses and Elgin Morris of Williamsburg Floral and Gifts. The Tayloe House it is the home of Kay Wilkinson. Among the highlights of the homes is an 18th-century corner cabinet at the back of the foyer, an 1830’s French table in the dining room and a miniature of the engraving Lady Washington’s Reception. Schmidt’s and My Favorite Things will help decorate the home. The Grissell Hay Lodging House is the home of Daniel and Melinda Young and their two young boys, Caleb and Benjamin. Throughout the home are reminders of Daniel’s service in the Marines as well as that of his father. One piece of particular interest is a reproduction of a large map by John Senex dated 1710, which hangs in the living room. The garden club’s Christmas tree, decorated with ornaments from club members, also will be in the living room. Season’s of Williamsburg is decorating the staircase. Tickets for the tour are $25 or $7 to visit a single house or building. Tickets include use of Colonial Williamsburg’s buses from the Visitor Center and around the Historic Area. Tickets will be available at Colonial Williamsburg’s Visitor Center and the Williamsburg Lodge 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 3 and 8:30-2:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec 4. They are also available Saturday at each building on the tour. Visit www.green-spring-garden-club.org. or call 903-2161. –Ann Efimetz

Stroll through history Colonial Strolls with Vanessa Cole Local resident Vanessa Cole has combined her penchant for theater with her family heritage to create new tours offered to locals and visitors. Colonial Strolls with Vanessa Cole offers, “Tales of History,” which according to Cole contains documented historical stories. She also offers a “Tales of History, Tales of Mystery” tour which combines historical accounts with tales of strange and eerie happenings. Cole also presents “Colonial Kids” for youngsters, and is working on “Meet the Ladies.” The tours begin in Merchants Square. “My tour is not actually a tour, but an experience into the past,” Cole said recently. “I transform the present into the past by becoming my sixth greatgrandmother Mary Cole, complete with British accent, and the year becomes 1778.” Cole who teaches drama at Greenwood Christian Academy said her background in theater gives her the chance to educate tour attendees in an entertaining way. Cole creates a character that is based on the history and life of her ancestor, but she admits has some “adaptations.” “I have to fill in the blanks based on what I know about her and the time period,” Cole said. “I know that she was gentry, well-bred, and educated. She is quite humorous and has developed a rather fun personality over time.” Distinguishing Cole’s efforts is her work in devising a “Give Back Stroll.” She describes that as a fundraising evening for agencies or groups that need to have funds raised. She is currently working on marketing the Give Back Stroll to various local organizations who may be looking for novel ways to fundraise. If a group wants to raise money they could schedule one of Cole’s Give Back Strolls. 50% of the ticket prices paid by those who 8
attended, would be given back to the organization, she said. “The Give Back Stroll can be for athletic teams, bands and nonprofit groups,” Cole said. She hopes to offer the tours to everyone who would like to learn more about our area’s history while having a bit of fun. “I want to share history with visitors and locals,” she said. “I want to use the talent that I have been given to teach it in an entertaining way. And I want to give back to my community.” –Ann Efimetz

Christmas done naturally at Colonial Williamsburg
A
Anyone who lives here or has visited during the Christmas season likely has seen the extraordinary work of Colonial Williamsburg landscape staff members. Each year, a corps of landscape artists create an amazing array of natural Christmas decorations which decorate more than 75 exhibition buildings, taverns and offices throughout the Historic Area. What makes Colonial Williamsburg’s decorations so distinctive is the exclusive use of various natural plants, fibers and other natural materials. You will see pine, boxwood, Fraser fir, magnolia leaves, assorted fruits and berries dried flowers, feathers and cloth which are used to create distinct pieces. And the job doesn’t end after the decorations are put in place. Our area’s often extreme weather and various wildlife can wreak havoc on the natural decorations. That’s why a majority of natural materials, especially fruit and greenery are replaced at least twice during the holiday season. Colonial Williamsburg offers a Christmas Decorations Walking Tour through the beginning of next year. It gives people a chance to learn more about the artistry that goes into creating these decorations which are known across the U.S. The tour begins at the Greenhow Store office. Tours run through Saturday, Jan. 2 at 9:15 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., except on Dec. 4, 5 and 25. On Saturday, Dec. 4 the tour begins at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:15 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 5 the tour starts at 9:15 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 25 the tour starts at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Ticket price is $10 with a general admission ticket and $15 without one. –Ann Efimetz

Chef Francesco Fiorello of Francesco’s Ristorante Italiano began working when he was just a young boy in Palermo, Sicily. Since, he has continued perfecting the culinary skills he learned as a youngster, and has opened a restaurant in Lightfoot which showcases his talents, much to the delight of those who dine at Francesco’s. “It is like a dream come true for him,” said Jeniffer Fiorello, Francesco’s wife. “We are passionate about the food.” Fiorello emphasized that all the ingredients which go into the specials and features are created from scratch with the finest ingredients available. “Nothing we use is from a can or has been frozen,” she explained. One of the most popular dishes created by Fiorello is “Ravioli Di Baronessa.” That’s jumbo lobster-stuffed ravioli topped with whole lump crabmeat and simmered in pink Alfredo sauce. “It is the most sought-after feature,” she said. “It is amazing. And you can add shrimp or scallops if you want more seafood with it.” Jeniffer Fiorello said that her husband creates a full selection of standard Italian favorites including lasagna and manicotti, but also creates gourmet dishes that people rave over. “The things he creates, you probably won’t find anywhere else,” she said.
Those who special dietary needs can have dishes tailored to suit particular tastes or restrictions. That includes those with gluten and wheat allergies, vegetarian, low sodium, or even those who are on Weight Watchers. “The chef is available to speak to customers about health conditions,” she said. “We do help people with those needs.” Fiorello emphasized that the servers at the restaurant are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and strive to accommodate each customer with the best service available. “Our servers are very friendly,” she said. “It is not just taking someone’s order, but knowing each client and meeting their needs. Our servers are very genuine people and will use etiquette with our guests.” Take out is also available for those who would like to enjoy menu items at home. Jeniffer Fiorello said she often catches her husband pausing at the window after an entree has been picked up by a server to watch the reaction of the diner who is eating it. “I catch him watching them take their first bite and their reaction,” she said. “This is his whole life he has put in here and he wants to make people happy.” More –– Francesco’s is located in the Pavilion Shops on Richmond Road in Lightfoot. E
Emily McMillen will graduate from the College of William & Mary next spring, but will leave behind a legacy of involvement and concern for those on campus who are struggling with eating disorders. While studying education and women’s studies, McMillen has become proactive in educating the college and greater Williamsburg communities about the serious problems associated with food-related disorders. As president of Collegiate Awareness for Eating Smart, McMillen spearheaded the organization of a recent 5K walk/run, which was meant to focus attention on the growing problem of eating disorders on college campuses across the country. The event raised more than $15,000. She plans to continue getting the word out in February during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and in the spring during Love Your Body Week, which is held on the W&M campus. “Most people know someone or have been touched in some way with an eating disorder,” McMillen said recently. “Perhaps they have had their own personal journey with an eating disorder, or they had a friend or family member with one. For me, it was a personal journey.” McMillen has used her past experiences as a way to help others and to bring awareness to an issue that people generally aren’t comfortable talking about. “People do need to know about the seriousness of eating disorders,” she said. “They need to talk about it. You can’t expect to make any inroads unless you discuss it.” McMillen became involved with CARES when she was a sophomore. As time went on, she became even more involved, participating in various activities sponsored by the group. She became president last spring. “That was the next step,” she said. “I wanted to be president.” The CARES group is a task force that was created by W&M campus professionals in response to concern about the well being of the college community. Their goal is to continue to raise awareness and educate people about eating issues. “The underlying goal is that a discussion begins to happen in the area,” she said. “I want people to be okay about talking about this.” McMillen said she knows people who are currently in the throes of eating issues. She realizes that friends and
family walk a fine line when trying to help those who may be facing those challenges because of the nature of the problem. “We don’t have the right words yet,” she admitted. “But hopefully that will come in time.” After graduation, the Chesapeake native hopes to get a job as a teacher in an area school division. Until graduation, she will work as hard as she can to encourage dialogue to help those who are struggling, hoping that her work will have a lasting impact. “If I sat back and didn’t do something about this, then maybe one day my daughters would be struggling with the same thing,” she said. “And I don’t want that to happen.” –Ann Efimetz

Oh! Christmas tree If you have never attended the tree-lighting in Market Square of Colonial Williamsburg, you may consider taking it in this year. Thousands of bright white lights are carefully strung on the evergreen located at Market Square on Duke of Gloucester Street. Each year since 1917, people have gathered to usher in Christmas by watching the tree become illuminated for the season. It is truly a sight to behold. This year, the tree will be lit at 5:30 p.m., Friday Dec. 24 on the steps of the Colonial Courthouse. No tickets or reservation required. According to Colonial Williamsburg, the first Christmas tree recorded in Williamsburg was at the St. George Tucker House in 1842. In 1915, a small notice in the town newspaper spread the word, “When the bells begin to ring all of Williamsburg will assemble on Palace Green to sing carols and hear the exercises that have been prepared for the community Christmas tree.” The invention of electric lights had made it possible for the outdoor ceremony. 1917 is the first tree lighting ceremony that was held on Palace Green, in 1937 it was moved to Market Square Green and Colonial Williamsburg took over. Depending on weather, 500-3,000 people attend the annual tradition. Candles are handed out to attendees to be lit when the evergreen lights are turned on. The tree remains lit until Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011. Photo by Ann Efimetz

Nativity as art Betty Morris displays her extensive collection at St. Bede this month Ever since local resident Betty Morris first exhibited her extensive collection of Christmas creches at St. Bede Catholic Church several years, ago, people have been asking her to show them again. “People have asked for an exhibit, and I am happy to do it,” Morris said recently. “It is something very worthwhile to share.” The upcoming exhibit is scheduled 2-8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 1; 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Thursday-Friday, Dec. 2-3 and 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Dec. 4. St. Bede parishioners have also been invited to display their special creches as part of the exhibit. Morris has nearly 200 creches from countries throughout the world. Only about half will be shown at the upcoming exhibit. Morris has been collecting creches for decades. She and her husband, Bob, have traveled extensively throughout the world. The opportunity to travel has resulted in the purchase of distinctive sets from dozens of countries. “I have picked them up wherever I saw them,” Morris said. Two years ago, Morris exhibited her collection at the Mepkin Abbey Creche Festival in Moncks Corner, S.C. Each year, various creche collectors are invited to to exhibit there. Morris is a member of the “National Friends of the Creche Society,” an international organization dedicated to the Christmas Nativity. In December of 1999, an American Chapter formed and Morris has been an active member since. The Christmas creche is one of the oldest forms of household devotion in Christianity. The cutting edge Wood cuts of Paula Koz tell a story with pictures Several years ago, local artist Paula Koz and her husband, Gabe, had attended the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. She was impressed with the experience, and began to think the artwork she created may be a good fit with the festival atmosphere. Before long, she was introduced to Jerry Bledsoe, the former festival director. “He told me, ‘If you would like to do the poster, that would be wonderful,’” Koz said recently. “It was a real blessing.” That was 2003. The poster featured “Henry VIII” and “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” She has been doing them ever since. But the Virginia Shakespeare Festival posters represent only one of her creative projects. Koz recently worked on a commemorative poster for the annual historic Green Spring tour. But when asked to define her work, she is quick to respond. “I like to see myself as a book illustrator,” Koz said “I love books and I love illustrating. I like to think of myself as an illustrator, not a fine artist.” In keeping with that passion, Koz is working diligently on the creation of an illustrated book “Close Call,” which is based on a true story about the Holocaust. The book is being created using woodcuts of cherry wood. She uses a special knife to cut words and illustrations into the surface, which can be inked and reproduced on paper. She envisions the book needing approximately 64 blocks to tell the story, which translates into about a year of work. 32
The story is done in memory of a friend who survived the Holocaust. He has since passed away, but the work is done to share the story with those who are interested in reading it. Working on the piece presents challenges, but ones that Koz gladly accepts. “If you don’t have words, you have to figure everything out visually,” Koz said. “You need to be able to telegraph the emotions.” Although at times work can be painstaking, she said it is worth the effort. “I have to do this,” she said. “I have wanted to do this for many years. I am telling a story about the Holocaust, and I need to do this.” – Ann Efimetz Photo by Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 2010

CW publishes guide book for kids Colonial Williamsburg has published its first guidebook for children. “Hogsheads to Blockheads,” includes illustrations, comparisons of popular items of the 18th century to today and word tips and facts of particular interest to youngsters. The book invites kids to visit the home of the first father of our country (and it wasn’t George Washington). Kids can also learn about colonial games such as rolling hoops and ninepins, about the cells that held Blackbeard’s pirates, about rare breeds of farm animals and about fifes and drums. What are hogsheads and blockheads? A hogshead is a type of barrel that was used to ship tobacco, the main cash crop in Virginia. A blockhead is a piece WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 2010
of wood carved to the size and shape of a customer’s head and used by a wigmaker to ensure a perfect fit. “Hogsheads to Blockheads” was written by Barry Varela, whose previous books include “Arctic Tale” and “Gizmo.” It was illustrated by Bentley Boyd, who also adapted Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary City program into a comic book. The book was made possible by the support of the Steven and Sheila Miller Foundation of Houston, Texas. Want one? “Hogs-heads to Blockheads” is available for $6.95 from Colonial Williamsburg stores and from www.williamsburgmarketplace.com. For more information, visit www.history.org. Here is a rundown of some of the events scheduled: • The annual Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance Christmas Parade at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4. The event features more than 100 floats, bands and other fun acts that delight people of all ages. The theme this year is “Christmas Town.” The event is free. Let’s hope the weather cooperates. In its history, the event has brought some 100,000 people to the area. It is a partnership between the City of Williamsburg, Colonial Williamsburg and the College of William & Mary. A corps of at least 350 volunteers work to present a fun evening for people of all ages. Approximately 40 live performing acts including singers, dancers, instrumentalists, magicians, storytellers, puppeteers, jugglers and clowns will perform on various stages, beginning at 5 p.m. The fun begins at 3 p.m. at Matthew Whaley School. Children’s fireworks will conclude the event at 7:30 p.m. The grand finale begins at 11:30 p.m. at Zable Stadium at The College of William & Mary. Fireworks go off at midnight. Here’s what you need to know: Admission to all performances is included in the purchase of a First Night button. Buttons are $13 per person when purchased before Dec. 30. Buttons purchased the day of the event will be $15 each. Children 5 years of age and under are free. They will be available at 18 locations around town before the event. Buses are free to anybody with a First Night button. They run every 15 minutes 6 p.m.-midnight. Food vendors will sell food and beverages in several indoor locations throughout the entertainment circuit.. 50
Plan what you want to see using the map and schedule. Try to find at least one alternative event because sometimes shows fill up fast. Parking is at a premium, so carpool if possible. Parking is available at William & Mary Hall, Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall, the two-story municipal garage near the Williamsburg Area Chamber of Commerce Building, behind Matthew Whaley School, the Old Court House, and William & Mary Campus Center. Additional parking is available in the downtown area. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, as there can be a bit of walking involved. The main sponsors of this year’s event are Wachovia Wells Fargo, WindsorMeade and 1st Advantage. For more information, visit www.firstnightwilliamsburg.org.

Lindsey Clare deCamp, Allison Schubring, Ella Schubring and Lydia Smith A group of four Walsingham Academy students have been helping to bring new smiles to kid’s faces. Freshmen Lindsey Clare deCamp and Lydia Smith along with third grader Ella Schubring and her sister, sixth grader Allison Schubring, have been holding “Pony Parties” for area kids celebrating birthdays. Parents of kids book parties at the deCamp’s home stable, where they get to meet “Minty,” the pony. The four girls introduce the party-goers to 12-yearold Minty, allowing them to brush him and learn about the care of the horse. They also get to make crafts, get a pony ride, and take home a photo of the occasion. All the money raised through the events have benefited Operation Smile. That organization, based in Norfolk, has provided free reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate. The surgery is considered life-changing for children and their families. Often the deformity affects the child’s ability to eat, speak, socialize and smile. Sometimes, the children with deformities are shunned and rejected. Funds raised go to help the medical professionals perform the surgeries for those who need it. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 2010
School: Walsingham Academy Have held approximately 9 “Pony Parties” which have raised some $1,000 to benefit Operation Smile. So far, the Pony Parties have netted about $1,000, which has been sent directly to Operation Smile. “It makes me feel good that we can do something nice for such a great organization such as Operation Smile,” said Allison Schubring. Her sentiments were echoed by her younger sister, Ella Schubring. “It makes me happy that we are doing this for such a great cause.” Lindsey Clare deCamp said she understands how important the work Operation Smiles is in the lives of the kids who receive the surgery. “The kids can feel good about themselves again,” deCamp said. The girls have fun throwing the parties and sharing their love of horses with others, while knowing that their efforts will bring smiles to kids whom they haven’t even met. “This makes me feel like a better person, Lydia Smith said. “It is great to be able to give back to people.” –Ann Efimetz 51

New Year’s Eve service The Williamsburg Clergy Fellowship will hold a service at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve, at Bruton Parish Church. For the past several years, people of all faiths have converged to bid farewell to the past year and pray for blessings in the new. The service has been held in sanctuaries throughout the area, but for the past several years has been held at Bruton Parish on Duke of Gloucester Street.
The service is a community effort involving several ordained ministers and laity. More than a half-dozen faith communities are expected to be represented. Scripture and prayers will be offered during the service. It provides a peaceful way for those who attend to begin the new year. It is especially popular among those who attend First Night, which begins at 5 p.m. Hymns, scripture readings and prayers will be offered. Several selections of music will also be offered. More –– Parking will available on Duke of Gloucester Street.

just for fun
Remember December Last month of year filled with fun 2011? It’s coming. At the end of the month we will say goodbye to 2010. But before we clink the glasses and sing “Auld Lang Syne,” December has many days to celebrate. December is the month to celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. The holiday season likely offers people the most chances to spend time with family and friends. Hanukkah (or Chanukah) is Dec. 1-9; Christmas Day is Dec. 25 and Kwanzaa begins Dec. 26. There are several local annual Christmas events that help celebrate the holidays. The Grand Illumination, the Christmas Parade, Green Spring Home Tour, special musical and theatrical offerings all offer chances for fun. December is also known for some other non-holiday related observances as well. December is “Bingo’s Birthday Month,” “National Tie Month,” “Safe Toys and Gifts Month,” and “National Write a Business Plan Month.” Special weeks include, Cookie Cutter Week, 1-7; National Handwashing Awareness Week, 6-12 and It’s About Time Week, 25-31.
DECEMBER 4 National Cookie Day 5 International Ninja Day 7 National Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day 11 International Mountain Day 12 Poinsettia Day 21 Crossword Puzzle Day 23 Festivus (for the rest of us) 26 National Thank-you Note Day (also National Candy Cane Day) 31 Make up Your Mind Day (which is of course, New Year’s Eve)
