Pocket book Smaller guide packs much information A new guide book from Colonial Williamsburg makes it easier to tour. The new book is much smaller than the trade paperback, “Official Guide to Colonial Williamsburg,” that has been in use for decades. The “A Pocket Guide” is not designed to replace the larger book, which is more comprehensive. The 96-page guide has more than 100 photos and key information on history, the “Revolutionary City” program, public buildings and homes, R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse, historic trades, taverns, the art museums

of Colonial Williamsburg, gardens, rare breeds, nightlife, shopping, restaurants, hotels, golf and spa. The book also includes highlights for first-timers. The back section of the book includes both Jamestowns and Yorktown. It also features a frequently-asked-questions section for practical advice on touring the Historic Area, including issues from handicapped accessibility in the Historic Area to watching your step in areas where horses use the streets. Flowering delight If you have never been to Freedom Park and the Ellipse Garden/Williamsburg Botanical Garden, now may be the ideal time. Consider taking a self-guided tour of the garden to see all that is blooming in late summer. The garden is open daily dawn to dusk, is free and offers a chance for people of all ages to enjoy nature. There are programs for kids and adults scheduled monthly. This month, an educational program on butterflies will be held 10-11:30 a.m., Aug. 20. The event will include planting milkweed and tagging. The garden features a variety of areas including: Native plant garden - trees, shrubs and perennials which grow well in our area. Wildflower meadows - a variety of plants which are lush and boast changing color. Butterfly garden - plants in the garden attract butterflies. It is a wonderful place to see a variety of the lovely insects. Wetlands - plants that need moist soil grow in this area. thyme, rosemary, sage, sorrel, chives, lavender, fennel, mint and basil. Perennial border garden - plants blooming through fall include blanket flower, fire pink, coneflower, salvia, black-eyed Susan and pincushion flower. Have a ball

Step back in time with colonial dancing The Newport House on South Henry Street near the College of William & Mary Law School, stands out along the row of homes. The bed & breakfast, owned by John and Cathy Millar, is bright yellow, giving it a unique presence. But it’s not only the color distinguishing it. Step inside the front door and you take a trip back in time. A flight of stairs in the main hall of the house leads up to a large, turquoise-hued ballroom. The house, a 1987 reproduction of the 1756 colonial dwelling, originally sported a ballroom similar to the current setup. The Millars decided to keep with the original colonial design and include a ballroom with a modern blueprint. And it’s utilized regularly. Each Tuesday the Williamsburg Heritage Dancers meet in the ballroom to participate in English Country Dancing. That’s a form of colonial recreation, both traditional and refined, as well as energetic and exciting. Some 70 regular members in the Williamsburg Heritage Dancers group gather at 8 p.m. each Tuesday. They come as they are, casually dressed. “Occasionally, someone will come from a Colonial Williamsburg function in their costume and join us for a dance, but, that’s just an accident,” John Millar said recently. Once the music had been readied and the group has gathered, the dancers choose partners and the 14

dancing begins. Each dance lasts for a few minutes, and varies in figures and formation. The dances range from contemporary to those written before 1800. There’s one dancer in the group who has begun writing dances herself. The dances are taught by a group of approximately eight. Each session is taught by two instructors, each rotating upon the hour. The Millars are both instructors and participants. The activity in the ballroom is so intriguing that guests staying at the bed and breakfast regularly join in. “We often get notes back from our guests saying, ‘We’re Photos by Ann Efimetz still dancing and loving it.’ It’s fun when people come here on vacation and they end up picking up a whole new hobby, a whole new interest,” John Millar said. Newport House dancing provides a fun way to learn more about colonial traditions. It’s not only a great diversion and good exercise, but those who participate can discover more about the history of the time period. Dancing is open to everyone, of all ages and dance skill levels. You can learn as you go. Are there any pointers for beginners from the experts? “Well, wearing the right shoes,” Cathy Millar said. “You have to wear comfortable shoes, no heels. August in the Square Don’t let summer pass you by! There are still lots of fun things to do during August. The Summer Breeze Concert Series continues, as does Farmers Market and Movies on Prince George Street. In Yorktown, there’s Shagging on the Riverwalk and Market Days. The Williamsburg Farmers Market continues through summer each Saturday 8 a.m.-noon. People can purchase a variety of locally grown flowers, produce and other delicious and useful items. It is a treat each weekend. Movies on Prince George Street is a way to see some great movies in a wonderful environment. They are scheduled on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. Bring a chair and some snacks and enjoy the movies, al fresco. Summer Breeze Concerts are free, just bring a chair and dinner if you like, and enjoy a summer evening with your friends. Toys for all ages School Crossing is a shop that can be spotted immediately at Monticello Marketplace. Peering at you through glass are stuffed toy lions, elephants and a variety of colorful toys. Once you step inside, you realize School Crossing is a paradise for a child and a child at heart. The store, owned by Sherry and Bob Phipps, offers educational toys and instructing aids for teachers and a wide range of creative and innovative toys for all ages. The inventory is carefully chosen to reflect the newest toys as well as classic playthings. School Crossing creates a fun and upbeat atmosphere for children, parents and teachers. All customers are encouraged to try out various samples of games and toys throughout the store. “Play is really how children learn,” Sherry Phipps said recently. “Playing is a great way to get families together. They can play a board game or put a puzzle together, or do an arts and crafts project. We have lots of things that are great for an entire family to do. It doesn’t matter if your family has

a ninety-year old great-grandparent and a sevenyear-old child. It’s fun for everybody.” The store creates a nostalgic feeling which inspires adults to get involved. “We have samples of toys,” she said. “As people come in, we try to tell them about a new game, so that they may have an idea before they go home of what the experience is playing it.” The couple tries to keep a step ahead of the ever-changing toy market by trying to get the most up-todate toys and teaching aids for their stock. “We try to be current and relevant, because it seems like children are changing,” Phipps said. “We try to stay current in what’s available out there and try to be there to help our community.” – Joanna Morelli Joanna Morelli is an intern working for The Williamsburg Magazine this summer.

Your place is set It’s been almost two years since the opening of My Place playground adjacent to the James CityWilliamsburg Community Center on Longhill Road. Since, kids of all ages have been enjoying the inclusive playground. It was designed to welcome all individuals and families, regardless of their ability. Special features, a neat playing surface and fun recreational elements make it a great place to spend time. The playground is a privately funded project of the Leadership Historic Triangle Class of 2009 and involved people from across the community. Individuals, business and organizations pitched in to fund the $170,000 facility. Maintenance and repair are supported through donations and a commemorative brick paver fundraising campaign. For a $50 donation, contributors receive a commemorative brick paving stone etched with their message. The bricks serve to ensure that those who enter realize the playground is a true community location. One recent morning a local woman and her two kids spent time there and commented on how fun the equipment was and how they enjoyed frequently visiting the playground. John Carnifax, director of James City County Parks and Recreation, said that the playground has

been garnering positive comments from the kids and parents who have used the facility. “A lot of people who utilize the athletic fields near the playground like it too,” Carnifax added. “Their smaller children can use the equipment while their older children are playing sports on the fields, so it has been a win-win situation.” One of the hallmarks of the playground is the surface which helps cushion impact and makes it userfriendly for everyone. “The surface really makes it usable for all individuals and it requires less maintenance than other surfaces,” he said. The various playground pieces are constructed of durable plastic which are designed to wear well. There are swings, climbing equipment, merry-goround and other fun elements. “The desire is that it serves the kids well and they enjoy playing on the equipment,” he said. “We want it to be safe and enjoyable for the kids.” My Place is open daily sunrise to sunset. A new year at W&M Some 1,450 students will begin their education as freshmen at the College of William & Mary this month. According to the College of William & Mary, the group of admitted students comes from the largest undergraduate applicant pool in the College’s history. William & Mary received more than 12,800 applicants for the Class of 2015, a record number for the seventh year in a row. • 31.6 percent of the admitted students are students of color. This is an increase from last year’s final total of 31.0 percent. • The percentage of first-generation college students increased from 9.0 percent to 9.6 percent of the admitted students. • 86.1 percent of admitted students with a high-school rank finished in the top 10% of their graduating class. Only 38.5% of admitted students

attend a high school that reports class rank, down from 40.2 % a year ago. • The percentage of legacies among the admitted students increased from 5.8%- 6.1% • SAT scores were comparably strong to previous years. The middle 50th percentile for the SAT Critical Reading and Math scores was 1300 to 1490, compared to 1300 to 1500 a year ago. The median score was 1400, the same as last year. This year’s admit rate of 34.6% is slightly higher than last year’s rate of 31.8%. There are also some additions to the campus, one being Tribe Square on Richmond Road.The mixed-use building near Wawa will open this fall. Upper ﬂoors will have 14 student apartments, while the ground ﬂoor will consist of retail businesses.

New space for classes This Century Art Gallery opened a new Art Education Center on Westover Avenue last March. The location gives the gallery more space to hold classes, programs and community outreach. Next month fall classes begin, and there will be more offerings for all ages. The new space has many advantages. “The space has great light,” said Susan Sullivan Tubach of the gallery. “It is provides great natural light for art.” The more centralized location has also helped spur more interest in classes. “We have more visibility since we are downtown and more people are aware we are there and are finding out what we offer,” she said. “It is a good time for art education.” She said the preschool art program has really taken off since the move and the elementary program “keeps growing.”

Several rooms allow for classes to be presented concurrently. There’s also a small area to display student artwork. Also new this fall will be art parties which will allow groups to bring their own food and beverages to the center. An art instructor will provide instruction on a pre-chosen painting and the participants will paint while enjoying each others company. “The parties are really fun,” she said. “It allows people to spend time together in a different type of way.” The center can also host birthday parties for kids and teens. Tubach said the future is bright for classes and more diverse programming. “We have great instructors and our students are wonderful,” she said. College Landing Park There are many places throughout the Historic Triangle where you can go to enjoy nature. One scenic location that provides a quiet respite is College Landing Park on S. Patriotic Williamsburg Did you know that Williamsburg is is a finalist for “Most Patriotic Town” in the Rand McNally/USA Today “Best of the Road” search? The contest looks for the best small towns in America with populations under 150,000. In May 600 towns were nominated by more than 20,000 voters in five categories: “Most Beautiful,” “Most Fun,” “Best for Food,” “Friendliest,” as well as “Most Patriotic.” Williamsburg was among the top six in votes for patriotism. Other finalists are

Working toward opening night When the Williamsburg Players open their 55th year this fall, it will be in a newly renovated theater. Work has progressed steadily over the summer in anticipation for the opening of “The Producers” slated for Nov. 3. The new James-York Playhouse, located on Hubbard Lane, will have more than 300 seats, tripling the house of the former theater. The on and back stage areas are getting a huge boost, allowing the Players to present larger scale plays for the community. And the changes aren’t only in the building. A new online ticketing

system will make seeing shows easier than ever. A visit to the Players’ website at www.williamsburgplayers.org allows patrons to pick the shows and seats they want. The old system of calling and leaving a message has been replaced with state-of-theart system. The Players have an industrious season to open the new theater. Healing rooms Greensprings Chapel has started a new ministry at the church on Ironbound Road designed to help those who are sick or suffering in body, mind or spirit. Marlyce Johnson, who worships at the church, heads the “healing rooms” ministry. Simply, it involves others praying for healing for a person who seeks help with various issues. “Physical problems are the most common, and that is usually what people think of first when they hear about healing rooms,” Johnson said recently. “But people are body mind and spirit, and I know a lot of times those all goes together. If there is a need for emotional healing, it can manifest itself in physical symptoms. We rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us and trust he will show us the root cause.”

Last winter church pastor Brian Britton had mentioned he wanted to implement a healing rooms ministry at the church. “He asked if I would consider leading it,” Johnson said. After several months of training and organization, it began in early summer. Five people from the community attended the first session asking for healing prayer. “It was very encouraging,” Johnson said. “The people who came said they would be back and that they would spread the word.” The mission of the healing rooms is stated on the website www.healingrooms.com “The friends and team members of the
