Dr. Georgia Prescott Caring for the young Dr. Georgia Prescott of Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg has been practicing locally since August 1976. She recently answered some questions about her practice. Tell me a bit about the early days of practicing here. I opened a solo practice right after finishing my pediatric residency at MCV (now VCU). Dr. John Fletcher was the only other pediatrician in Williamsburg and he immediately took a two week vacation. My office was swamped with patients. Patients would routinely pay out of pocket for office visits, which were only $10 and immunizations were $5 for a twomonth-old well baby. How has practicing pediatrics changed over the past 30+ years? Huge changes have occurred. When I started practice, I saw a lot more acutely “ill” children. Today, we see many children with runny noses and coughs that parents probably would not have brought into the office years ago. What about immunizations? We have many more immunizations now to protect children. When I first began to practice here I would admit 5-6 young children per year to the hospital with bacterial meningitis. Almost all were caused by H. influenza (HIB) bacteria. Since the HIB vaccine come out in 1985 I have had no new cases of bacterial meningitis. What are things like now? The cost of medicine has escalated dramatically. We entered an age of “managed” care. That means the cost to file insurance in private offices like ours is time consuming and expensive. We have to hire people who do nothing but argue our case before the insurers who “manage” it. We often need to prove clear need for the treatment we recommend before 6

they will pay for it. It is nearly impossible to run a small solo practice now because of needing expensively trained staff supports now. I miss the intimacy with patients and the simple business model that I had initially in solo practice. You are now treating the children of some of the children who were your original patients. Seeing that children of my past patients make me feel honored that they choose to continue medical care with me. It is a great joy to watch babies and young child grow, change and become healthy adults. It is also nice to see a child, remember their parents when they were children, and to know their grandparents. I even have a few great-grandchildren of my early patients. My goal is to help parents raise healthy, well adjusted, self-sufficient children. A fun part of pediatrics is that it is probably the only medical practice where you can often “play” a little with your patients while they are in the office. What does the future hold for you? I feel blessed to have good health and I hope to continue practice for several more years. Photo by Ann Efimetz What words would you like to impart for parents just starting out with newborn babies? Enjoy and love your babies and children. They grow up so quickly. It’s hard to see that when you’re in the midst of an illness, family problems, or busy schedules. Parenting is serious business but don’t take it too seriously. You are on “loan” to one another for a time. It’s not only the children who grow while they are in your care. Let them be the beautiful creatures that the are. The greatest value, of course, is for a child to know that she or he is loved and valued and that their home is a safe place to be. – Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 2011

Painting a legacy When Mary Jane Badowski, 92, lost her beloved husband Pete to Alzheimer’s Disease in June of 2010, she decided she wanted to do something tangible to perpetuate his memory. Badowski decided to reproduce her husband’s paintings into note cards that are sold to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. So far she has raised more than $8,000 from the sale of the cards. When the couple lived in Florida, Pete was introduced to “Memories in the Making,” an Alzheimer’s Association program which encourages those with the disease to express themselves creatively. Pete Badowski’s paintings were of particular quality. Mary Jane decided they were worthy of reprint. “I was amazed when I first saw his work,” Mary Jane Badowski said recently. “He had created the painting on the back of an old pizza box. I thought someone else had painted it.” Soon Pete began turning out others. After his second pizza box painting turned out as well as the first, Mary Jane made a decision. “I went out and got him some paper to do the paintings on,” she said. “I said ‘If he is going to do this, I want to show them.’” Pete painted seven works before his death. Mary Jane has five of them hanging in her Heritage Commons home. The others were given to the couple’s daughters. Although heartbroken at the loss of her husband of 73 years, Badowski began her mission. “I wanted to raise awareness and to educate people about Alzheimer’s disease,” she said. “So many more people have it now.” Badowski said her husband’s talent in painting only surfaced through the Memories in the Making program. She thinks the music which accompanied the WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 2011

painting classes may have unlocked a part of his creativity that before was left undiscovered. “He never had painting talent before that program,” she emphasized, and then with a good natured laugh added, “He even hated to paint a room.” – Ann Efimetz

Count the birds this holiday season Grab the binoculars and take part in the 112th Christmas Bird Count sponsored by the Audubon Society. The count period will begin on Dec. 14 and run through Jan. 5 The Christmas Bird Count is one of the largest citizen science projects in the world. For some, it is a tradition within families. People say they do it for love of the birds and their interest in conserving birds. Tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission, often before dawn. For more than 100 years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during the holiday season.

Audubon and other organizations use data collected in the wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation action. People find the birds, identify them and report their findings online. Those who are interested can observe birds at backyard feeders, or they can go out to one of the areas many prime bird watching locations including the Colonial Parkway, Green Springs Trail, York River State Park, New Quarter Park, Waller Mill Park or other areas. If you are unable to participate in the Christmas Bird Count, there’s another in February, The Great Backyard Birdcount.

FEED THE BIRDS The most common species of birds that frequent backyard feeders include: • House finches • House sparrows • Tufted titmice • American goldfinches, • Pine siskins • Downy woodpeckers • Common redpolls • Black-capped chickadees • Northern cardinals • Dark-eyed juncos • American robins • European starlings • Some of the best seeds to offer are black oil sunflower seed, hulled peanuts, niger seed, suet mixes with seeds or fruit, peanut butter and white millet seed. • Clean off feeders, platforms and perches after each storm so seed is easily accessible. • Leave fruit and berries on trees, hedges and bushes to provide a natural source of food throughout the winter. • Add a heated birdbath to your backyard or place a safe heating element in a regular birdbath to provide birds with liquid water. • Stamp or shovel snow around feeders to provide easier access to spilled seed for ground feeding birds. • Leave nesting boxes and birdhouses up all year round to provide winter roosting sites.

A good dream Are you looking for a distinctive gift for that “person who has everything?” You may want to consider visiting the Dream Shop at Eastern State Hospital. The store, located in the hospital’s new facility, offers a variety of handcrafted items from cooperatives in Guatemala and Africa. Laura Dollieslager, who manages the store, recently returned from Guatemala with various items ideal for gift giving including wooden puzzle boxes and Nativity sets. “We are also thoroughly well stocked with beaded jewelry and other decor and household items,”

Dollieslager said. “We have many of the puzzle boxes because they sell so quickly and are so beloved.” The shop, which is staffed by 10 volunteers, moved to its present location in September 2010. The store was designed specifically for the shop and offers the chance to display the array of items. “It is less square footage than the other location down the hill, but what I like about it is that they designed the shop based on the merchandise we sell,” she said. “We have a real professional appearance.” The shop has increased its sales to hospital employees. However, Dollieslager said she hopes more people from the community will give the shop a try. “We love it when the community comes here,” she said. “We like to show off what we have to community members.” Buying an item from the shop keeps on giving. It gives back to the communities where the item was made, helps sustain a fair trade market and delights the recipient, she said. “This really is the best medicine for those who don’t like to go to the mall or Walmart to Christmas shop,” Dollieslager said. More – The shop is open noon-5 p.m., TuesdayFriday. Drive onto the campus of Eastern State, take an immediate right followed by an immediate left. Mikaela Law Over the past three years, 15-year-old Mikaela Law has accrued some 700 hours of community service. The sophomore at Warhill High has volunteered at various nonprofit organizations including the March of Dimes and the Maryland-based Suicide Prevention Education Awareness for Kids. The Law family moved here from Maryland last summer. She has continued working to raise awareness and money for the causes close to her heart. When Law was a youngster of 9, she became involved in the March of Dimes in her home state of Maryland. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The organization seemed a good fit for Law, who was born with several birth defects. She has had several surgeries to correct them and will have more until she is

about 20 years old. Even as a youngster, she developed empathy for others. “When I was a little girl one of my mother’s friends lost twin boys to premature births,” Law said recently. “I saw how much pain she was in, and I wanted to help others who went through what she did.” In addition to that work, Law became a spokesperson for the SPEAK organization, a suicide prevention group which targets young people. Again, her personal experience impelled her to get involve, having suffered trauma at age 12 which resulted in post traumatic stress. “But it was a learning experience,” she said. “Having that experience helped me to figure out there were things I could do for other people. When I got involved with SPEAK, I learned how many people have the same problems I do.” She has brought a message of hope to other kids struggling with depression. She gives presentations on her experiences, hoping to provide kids with the chance to overcome their challenges. “If it weren’t for my experiences,” I wouldn’t be about to talk to other kids that things do get better,’ she said. “There are so many people that need that push in the right direction.” She has no plans to let up on her volunteer efforts. After high school, she plans to pursue a medical career as a neonatal surgeon. She finds happiness knowing that she can offer help to ease burdens. “I feel like I was put on this earth to reach out to others,” Law said. “I know that is what I am supposed to do.” – Ann Efimetz

area events

Grand month The Grand Illumination at Colonial Williamsburg is one of the biggest events of the year for our community. This year’s event is scheduled Sunday, Dec. 4 in the Historic Area. The celebration begins with a variety of entertainment, starting at 5:15 p.m. on multiple outdoor stages throughout the Historic Area. Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums provide 18th-century music appropriate to the season. Other performers present holiday entertainment. At 7 p.m., candles will be lit in public buildings, shops and homes. Fireworks are a high point and will be launched at the Governor’s Palace, Magazine and Capitol. After the fireworks, the Fifes and Drums march down the Duke of Gloucester with guests following along. The tradition of Grand Illumination originated in 1934 with a “White Lighting.” The first “authentic” re-creation of an 18th-century Christmas in Williamsburg featured single candles in the windows of the Historic Area’s restored and reconstructed buildings, as well as garlands and greens on the outside of the buildings. Here are some other fun ways to usher in the holiday season. • The annual Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance Christmas Parade at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 3. The event features more than 100 floats, bands and other fun acts that delight people of all ages. The theme this year is “Christmas in Williamsburg.” The event is free. • The Green Spring Garden Club Christmas Homes Tour. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3. • Yorktown Lighted Boat Parade, 68 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3. Area boaters decorate their vessels and “parade” the York River in a competition for “Best of Show.” Hot cider and entertainment are offered before the parade of lights. 890-4970. It’s free. • Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center history muse-

ums offer a glimpse of 17th- and 18th-century holiday seasons during “A Colonial Christmas,” December 1-31. Songs and sounds of holidays past will be presented with period musical entertainment on December 26-31. • First Night, 5 p.m.-midnight, Dec. 31. The final night of 2011 becomes the first night of 2012 with a gala celebration of performance, food and fun for the entire family. – Ann Efimetz

Open houses Annual Homes Tour Dec. 3 The 52nd Annual Christmas Homes Tour presented by the Green Spring Garden Club will be held 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3. Five houses will be decorated with festive floral arrangements, four of them private residences in Colonial Williamsburg. The fifth home, the Wolf House, is located nearby on Tyler Street, behind the Williamsburg Lodge. It’s the first time the home has been open on the tour. Betty Williams is Wolf House chair and has years experience coordinating the details which go into preparing a location for Tour Day. “I have been chair of a house for 15 years,” Williams said, adding with a laugh. “Every year I say it will be my last year.” Williams oversees some 45 volunteers who will help keep things running smoothly at the Wolf House during the event. Arrangers, hostesses and various other volunteers are needed to help out. A corps of some 400 people from various area garden clubs pitch in to make the tour a success. Here’s what you will see on the tour: The Wolf Home is owned by Hank and Dixie Wolf and was built in 1983 by Bill Bull. The Wolfs are alumni of the College of William & Mary and are active supporters of Colonial Williamsburg. The home provides a view of the 7th green of the Spotswood Golf Course. The floral arrangements in the Wolf House will include plant materials currently available. Floral arrangements which decorate the houses, are designed by professional floral designers from the area, members of Green Spring Garden Club, and the ten other local garden clubs who donate their time and materials. Traditionally, the floral arrangements in the Historic Area include only flowers and plant materials which were available to the colonists in the 1700’s. However, because The Colonial 24

Williamsburg Foundation is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the homes will include flowers which had been imported from other parts of the world and were growing here in the mid 1800’s. Davenport House - at the intersection of Francis Street and Waller Street, home of Brett and Wendy Walker and their five children. The house will feature some of the children’s crafts as well as the folk harp which the two oldest daughters will play at times throughout the day. Palmer House - at the end of Duke of Gloucester Street near the Capitol. The house served as the headquarters for Confederate Army and then the Union Army during the Civil War. In recognition of this, Civil War memorabilia will be on display in the home. Elkanah Deane House located on Palace Green has a lively red color scheme which is used throughout the house. One of the highlights is the master bedchamber modeled after a bedchamber at George Photo by Ann Efimetz Washington’s Mt. Vernon. The Timson House located near the Deane House on Prince George Street. Visitors will be see antique doll and toy collections and rare paintings of George and Martha Washington, painted in reverse on glass. Proceeds from the tour will provide a scholarship in Environmental Studies at The College of William & Mary, two scholarships in Horticulture at Virginia Tech, a scholarship in Environmental Science at Christopher Newport University, scholarships to Nature Camp for youngsters and will help fund local horticulture projects. Tickets are $30 ($10 to tour a single house) and include use of Colonial Williamsburg’s buses from the Visitor Center, where free parking is available the day of the tour, and around the Historic Area. HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. Campus color The College of William & Mary follows the example of Colonial Williamsburg at Christmas. Several W&M buildings, including the residence of president Taylor Reveley are decked out in holiday finery. Even Lord Botetourt welcomes guests to campus with an evergreen wreath, usually placed at the beginning of December. The decision for Discover Teas to advertise with the Williamsburg Magazine was an easy one! Knowing that our ad would be widely seen by the local market as well as visitors, it just made sense. Budgeting for only one print ad our first quarter, we needed the biggest bang for our buck. And we got it! Our Grand Opening was a huge success, and we continue to see a steady flow of residents and visitors walk through our doors ready to Discover Teas.

There are many communities available to area retirees. For residents at the Villas at Five Forks, there is a distinct difference which led them to purchase their home. “This is a very small, close-knit community, said Sheila Byers, vice president of marketing. “What makes our community so special are the residents. They don’t want a huge community, they are looking for the small community where every one knows each other. The first residents moved into the ranch condominium community in fall of 2008. At build out, there will only be 90 homes. Currently, the Villas are home to 55 residents. The community is for active adults age 55 and older. They come from areas across the U.S. and have varied backgrounds and interests. The community clubhouse is often used as an extension of the resident’s living spaces and is used for special functions, socials and fellowship. “The residents of Villas at Five Forks look out for one another, Byers said. “That is why it is selling. The referrals have been amazing. Some residents have referred several people. The neighbors are there. If something happens they are right there. The neighbor-helping neighbor spirit was in evidenced in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Resident Tom Martin put his thoughts into an e-mail. “As a new resident of the Villas, I want to take this opportunity to recognize the incredible gift that is ours. As wicked Irene threatened the coast of North Carolina and its unwelcome entrance into Virginia so many of us reached out to be helpful to anyone who may have a need. There were invitations to make use of homes with generators if need be, there was a nurse making herself available, and so many of us expressed concern for one another during and after the storm... Byers said she enjoys interacting with the residents regularly. coined them as “right-sizers,” as opposed to downsizers. “These people are right-sizing their lives,” she said. “They are getting it to where they want it. They are out here redefining retirement.” Byers said the community takes the worry out of maintenance and routine upkeep. Several of the residents travel regularly and are able to “lock and leave,” knowing their homes will be cared for and protected. “They don’t have to mow the grass or worry about anything outside the home,” she said. “For the adventurous residents, this is perfect for them. They want to enjoy life and not have to worry at all.” Byers said the neighborhood has distinct appeal. “This is for someone who is not looking for a golf course community, who want to be in a smaller community. If that is what they want, then it is the Villas at Five Forks.”

area events

Here comes 2012 The last night of 2011 will soon become First Night 2012. The annual, alcohol-free event is celebrating its 19th year. The festivities are planned beginning around 5 p.m., Dec. 31. Every year thousands converge here to experience a variety of family entertainment, food and a grand fireworks display at midnight. According to Karen Peifer, event chair, it takes up to 400 volunteers including the board to ensure the event runs smoothly. And, the board meets 11 months out of the year to plan. Admission to the event is with a button, which will be on sale at 20 locations throughout greater Williamsburg. Buttons are $15, kids 5 and under are free. Sales are limited to 6,000 buttons.

A special kids show at Matthew Whaley Elementary begins at 3 p.m. New to the show this year are Betsy Q and the Children’s Theatre of Hampton Roads. “The kids show is so popular,” Peifer said. “We developed it for families to come and celebrate New Years. It is a fun evening for the kids.” Fireworks cap the kids event at 7 p.m., behind the school. Main stage performances begin at 6 p.m. All the venues are indoors, mitigating problems with the weather. Performances run the gamut from musicians to speciality acts. New this year is the “Main Event Shag Band” which will offer entertainment for those who like to dance.

December 31, 2011 Downtown Williamsburg First Night® is a non-alcoholic, family friendly event with over 40 live performing acts. All performances are held in downtown Williamsburg, Virginia and on the College of William & Mary campus. First Night® admission buttons are available at over 20 retail locations. Volunteer positions available call (757) 564-9396.

“We have never had a shag band before,” Peifer said. “We know the popularity of the Yorktown Shagging on the Riverwalk during the summer. There are people out there who like to shag. We have a lot of people who come who like to dance.” A rock concert will be held 811 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Building on N. Boundary Street, which has become popular with younger audiences. Free buses will run the area from 5 p.m.- 12:30 a.m. People with a button can ride the bus for free. Food vendors will have food and drinks available for sale throughout the evening. The grand finale begins at 11:30 p.m. at Zable Stadium at The College of William & Mary. Fireworks go off at midnight. Plan what you want to see using the First Night map and schedule. Try to find at least one alternative event because sometimes shows fill up fast. Christmas in Colonial Williamsburg is distinct. The extraordinary work of Colonial Williamsburg landscape staff members impresses locals and visitors each year with natural Christmas decorations on more than 80 exhibition buildings, taverns and offices throughout the Historic Area. What makes Colonial Williamsburg’s decorations so unique is the exclusive use of various natural plants, fibers and other natural materials. According to Colonial Williamsburg, the materials used to decorate include more than three miles of pine roping, 2,550 white pine and Frasier fir wreaths, 15 truckloads of pine, holly, boxwood, magnolia and berries and nearly 80 cases of fruit. The staff works to keep the decorations looking their best throughout the entire holiday season. A majority of natural materials, especially fruit and greenery are replaced at least twice during the holiday season. Colonial Williamsburg offers a Christmas

Decorations Walking Tour through the beginning of January. It gives people a chance to learn more about the artistry that goes into creating the decorations. “Williamsburg Decorating Ideas for Your Home” is a program in which Colonial Williamsburg landscape staff shares tricks of the trade as they demonstrate how to decorate a wreath, swag or other traditional Williamsburg holiday decorations using fresh fruit, greens and other natural materials. “Decorating the Private Homes” is a program where guests celebrate the annual fun-filled contest of the decorating efforts by staff and Historic Area residents. Award winners of the private homes decorating contest are announced, and interesting facts about what goes into decorating the Historic Area are shared. Lighting up Christmas If you have never attended the tree-lighting in Market Square of Colonial Williamsburg, you may consider taking it in this year. Thousands of bright white lights are carefully strung on the evergreen located at Market Square on Duke of Gloucester Street. Each year since 1917, people have gathered to usher in Christmas by watching the tree become illuminated for the season. It is truly a sight to behold. The tree will be lit at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 24 on the steps of the Colonial Courthouse. No tickets or reservation required. According to Colonial Williamsburg, the first Christmas tree recorded in Williamsburg was at the St. George Tucker House in 1842. In 1915, a small notice in the town newspaper spread the word, “When the bells begin to ring all of Williamsburg will assemble on Palace Green to sing carols and hear the exercises that have been prepared for the community Christmas tree.” The invention of electric lights had made it possible for the outdoor ceremony. 1917 is the first tree lighting ceremony that was held on Palace Green, in 1937 it was moved to Market Square Green and Colonial Williamsburg took over. Depending on weather 500-3,000 people attend the annual tradition. Some 2,000 candles are handed out to attendees to be lit when the evergreen lights are turned on. The tree remains lit for several weeks after Christmas.

Rabbi David Katz Rabbi David Katz has recently celebrated a year leading the congregation of Temple Beth El. Katz became rabbi of the synagogue following Me’Irah Iliinsky. He has fit seemlessly since arriving from Pennsylvania in October 2010. “It has been great,” Katz said in a recent interview. “The congregation and I are a really good fit for each other. They were looking for a lot of things that I bring.” Since here, Katz has ramped up various programs, especially ones focused on kids. There are new services, education opportunities and time to learn more about the Jewish faith and traditions. Members of the synagogue will likely attend parties and socials to observe the holiday. “Hanukkah comes at the darkest time of year, and that is intentional,” Katz said. “It comes when it is cold and dark outside and everyone comes together to make light. And with each passing day of Hanukkah, we create more light as we light the candles on the menorah.” For Jews, Hanukkah is a minor holiday in comparison to High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. However, the traditions of Hanukkah make it a festive time of year. “It is an important and fun holiday that occurs when everyone else is celebrating and getting gifts,” he said. “It is a fun time for Jewish kids. When everyone is getting Christmas presents, they are getting presents, too.” As for the future, Katz said he will continue developing relationships with other congregations throughout greater Williamsburg. He also wants to continue providing programs that will help members of his congregation. “We want to make sure that we meet the needs and offer what they are looking for in programs in people ranging in age from babies to seniors,” Katz said. – Ann Efimetz
