Short cut Who likes traffic? I think it’s safe to say that not many do. Here is a short cut that can help. Route 5 (John Tyler Highway) is a great way to get to Richmond, if you like a scenic route. It passes the James River Plantations and can really be a time saver during the summer when Interstate 64 gets jammed up. Hop on Route 5 at 199 and head west. HISTORIC JAMESTOWNE Walk the original streets of the first permanent English settlement in North America. Historic Jamestowne was Virginia’s colonial capital for 92 years and in 1619 the site of America’s first representative legislative assembly. Interpreted by a walking tour of the town site, which features archaeological remains of the 1607 fort, memorials, the 1690s church tower and the Glasshouse, where costumed craftsmen demonstrate the first English attempt at industry. Bassett Hall, a two-story, 18th-century frame house on 585 acres (including woodlands) near the colonial Capitol building, was the Williamsburg home of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Jr. In addition to the main house, the property includes a teahouse and three original outbuildings—a smokehouse, kitchen and dairy. The house reopened to the public in December 2002 following an extensive renovation. As a result, both the interiors and the grounds are much as they were when the Rockefellers lived there during the mid 1930s and 1940s to oversee the restoration of the Historic Area. DEWITT WALLACE DECORATIVE ARTS MUSEUM The award-winning DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum houses the Foundation’s renowned collection of British and American decorative arts dating from 1600 through 1830. York River Baptist Church and provide a gym. The church is also looking to add a full time Minister of Music. He extends an invitation to those who are looking for a place where people will be cared for and where their faith can grow. “York River is a warm and caring church,” he said. “We work hard at taking care of our own, but equally hard at assisting those in our community in any way that we can. People want to be greeted when they walk in and made to feel welcomed. However, that will not keep people. What folks are looking for is friends. The Rev. Bill Cashman has been pastor of York River Baptist Church for more than 26 years. In his tenure, he has enjoyed watching the small church located on Croaker Road in Toano grow from four construction trailers to a lovely facility which provides worship, teaching and fellowship space. He has watched the mighty works of God transpire in the small but dynamic congregation. He has baptized some 720 into the faith. “Since being in one place for so long, I have had the blessing of watching children born, then I was able to baptize them when they got saved,” he said recently. “I have watched them grow and then married them, and now I am seeing their children born. Being able to have a part in the lives of people over a long period of time allows us to become not just friends, but family.” Cashman has provided leadership in the church, sharing Scripture with a goal of making it come alive. “My preaching style is extemporaneous and very evangelistic,” he said. “I believe in challenging our people to become more Christ-like. God wants each of us to examine ourselves regularly and to be accountable to the fellowship so that we will begin to think, respond and act like Jesus would.” Over the years, Cashman said he has witnessed the hand of God firsthand within York River, exemplified through the work of church members. The church has participated in various ministries ranging from providing services to women in crisis pregnancies and interpreting church services for the deaf to visiting those in jail ministries and area nursing homes. There have been mission trips to various locations across the country and internationally to share the Good News. The church is also proactive in its approach to youth, having hosted dozens of youth rallys and encouraging their faith and church involvement. Recently Joey Meador was brought on staff as Student Minister. Cashman said the church future is “bright.” There are plans to purchase the land next to the church for future expansion which would include a multi-purpose building that could house worship, fellowship, WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

Spectacular Fourth of July Take in area events Yorktown will celebrate with a daylong series of events, capping with fireworks over the York River at 9:15 p.m. Entertainment will be offered beginning at 4 p.m. including The The Fifes and Drums of York Town, Voices of the Yorktown Chorale, the Sounds of Liberty Bell Ringing Ceremony, Parade on Historic Main Street, United States Coast Guard Band and The U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band. There will be a children’s game area 4-8 p.m., for kids ages 5 - 12 at the intersection of Main and Nelson Streets. Visitors are strongly encouraged to arrive no later than 5:30 pm, as Yorktown will be closed to vehicular traffic once parking lots are full. Busch Gardens also features fireworks on Fourth of July. Tickets to the park are required.
Independence Day offers people of every age the chance to celebrate our country’s freedom by participating in special events and taking in fantastic firework displays. Colonial Williamsburg offers several events all day long on Sunday, July 4, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Historic Area. The Declaration of Independence, drafted by Virginian Thomas Jefferson, was adopted July 4th, 1776. There are celebrations throughout the day including Fifes and Drums and militia parades. Segways will roll through Yorktown The tours cost $65 per person for 90 minutes. There must be a minimum of two people and a maximum of six people per tour. Segways are allowed on all VDOT streets and sidewalks. The devices are not allowed on York County sidewalks or on tour roads owned by the National Park Service.
There are some new tenants at Riverwalk Landing. RiverFruit Tropical Wines recently opened and offers wines that are made without grapes. The wine is made with tropical, citrus and berry fruits. The store offers unusual flavors of wine like Cocoa Beach, a chocolate wine, or Hot Sun, a tomato-and-pepper-based wine. The store offers free wine-tastings daily and specialty foods like rum cake and key lime and tangerine honey. Non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are also available. Patriot Tours & Provisions also opened recently and offers Segway tours of historic Yorktown as well as rent bicycles and sell beach provisions, including buckets, sunscreen, kites, beach chairs, snacks and drinks.

Ice cream for all Annual Ice Cream Social July 4 People can buy two scoops of ice cream and one piece of cake for $3. Hot dogs will be $3 and drinks will be $1. The event is family-friendly with a variety of activities for kids. Some of the fun planned includes, games, balloons and raffle prizes. The money raised by the event supports the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center’s Auxiliary. The group has a mission to continue providing free mammogram and bone density screenings for the uninsured, scholarships and health screenings for the uninsured, support for the annual Breast Cancer Retreat and other needs of our community health.
The 28th annual Ice Cream Social will be held 4:30-7 p.m., Sunday, July 4 in the Wren Courtyard of the College of William & Mary. The event has become a favorite among locals and visitors. People can listen to music, eat delicious ice cream and baked goods before the fireworks in Colonial Williamsburg. Shagging has returned to Yorktown The annual Shagging on the Riverwalk in Yorktown has been heating up Friday nights since last month. The events are held 6-9 p.m. on the waterfront throughout the month, beginning July 16.

The Colonial Shag Club is on hand at the events to provide shag lessons, demonstrations, club information and answer questions relating to the popular dance style. You don’t have to be a dancer to have fun! It’s the fifth year that York County is offering the popular series. It has become a tradition among locals and visitors. During July there are several bands lined up to provide great entertainment. And the best part is, it’s free! Those who attend are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs. Dr. Seuss on the loose Art-cade hosts annual Seuss event
sional ideas into three dimensional works of art. The Art-cade is one of fewer than 50 art galleries in the country where authorized Dr. Seuss artwork can be purchased. Each July the Art-cade Gallery hosts a Dr. Seuss art exhibit and sale. Gallery visitors during the event regularly represent the those from the Eastern U.S. and area residents. This 10th annual Dr. Seuss gallery event displays examples of his multifaceted output of whimsical artwork from book illustrations, “Secret Art” which the artist painted for his own enjoyment, and 3-D wall sculptures and bronzes. The Art-cade Gallery is filled with the timeless artwork of Dr. Seuss in addition to other styles of illustration. The gallery carries reproductions of Seuss work year around. There are also copies of books by and about Dr. Seuss in the gallery’s book section. New to Seuss art this summer is “Sludge Tarpon,” a wall sculpture presented as a fine art collectible 75 years after its debut. As the first of six pieces in the Seuss “Marine Muggs” collection, it is a wall-mounted, hand-painted cast resin sculpture reproduction in a limited edition of only 850 pieces. Just one sculpture is released per year. Also new this summer is a bronze of Horton the elephant, the last in a limited edition series of six table figures of Seuss personalities. The series was fashioned by noted sculptor Leo Rijn who is known for breathing life into the written word and for transforming two-dimen-

Hoyt said she has a deep appreciation for the clients she encounters while there. “Every week I look forward to spending time working,” she said recently. “The patients are very friendly and are always willing to talk. About a month after it started, I just fell in love with the job.” One of the aspects she treasures most is being able to help, often only a simple gesture or kind word. “To be able to help the less fortunate is a rewarding feeling,” she said. “To know that I could have put the only smile across a patients face or bring joy to them for one second makes everything I do worth my time.” Hoyt said her time at Lackey Free Clinic will continue inspiring her in the future and will seek to volunteer throughout her life. “This experience will not let me take life for granted,” she said. “I know I should live life to the fullest, because there are those out there who can’t.”
Kimberly Hoyt admits having a long time interest in the medical field, which she attributes to her dad’s profession as a physician. That’s why it seemed a good fit for Hoyt to begin volunteering at Lackey Free Clinic more than a year ago. Through her affiliation with Girl Scouting, Hoyt learned about the clinic when her troop was considering a service project at the facility. Although those plans never took shape, Hoyt took it upon herself to contact the Lackey clinic and join their staff as a volunteer. She currently works about five hours per week helping around the office performing duties ranging from filing charts and answering phones to checking patients in or dispatching medical records to physicians offices. She admits staying “very busy” during her time there, helping to provide services to those seeking WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JULY 2010

More than a golf club husbands who are very jealous because they didn’t have the chance to learn or improve in this sort of environment.” Ford’s Colony has heard this request and is offering the men a similar program, she noted. The organization recently held a 20-year celebration, “4-Tee Alumnae Day Golf and Luncheon,” where members past and present had a party at Ford’s Colony. There was a chance to talk about the game, but most importantly to fellowship and share in the friendships which have formed as a result. “The dining room at Ford’s Colony was filled with 4-Tee graduates, present members, and the most important people of all, those who kept the program alive by directing the agenda. It truly was a reunion filled with nostalgia, laughs and pride.” Callaghan said that the group has provided the “most accidental but gratifying experience of my life.” “To realize that so many friendships, lifelong and important, started in a 4-Tee class and will endure because of something I promoted?” she said. “Well, there is no way to measure that feeling.”
In 1990 when Ford’s Colony was a relatively new community, resident Judy Callaghan started a group which helped women golfers learn and become adept at the game. “For the newcomers moving in their choice was to either join the 18 hole golf group for the experienced players, or the 9- hole group for novice or beginning players,” Callaghan recalled recently. “And for that 9-hole group it was becoming a major issue as so many of the new members needed a lot of special instruction in rules and etiquette for this complicated game.” As president of the 9-hole group, Callaghan realized a beginning group for the new players was needed. She asked the board for support of the idea. So was the genesis of the “4-Tee” program. “It was soon realized however, that only lessons were not going to suffice,” she said. “We needed to get other women involved in the program to really bring the beginners into our association. So actually we took over much of the coaching and training in rules and etiquette after the pros did the technique clinics.” Since 1992, at least 250 women have gone through the program. Most of those who stuck with the program, graduated to the 9-hole group through the years. Several have served in leadership in the group, “giving back” for what they gained. “Our current roster shows that a little over 50 percent of this year’s members are graduates of the 4-Tee class. About 12 have qualified for the 18 hole group,” she said. Callaghan said that the program has had an impact on their lives. “I hear how it has changed their vacation choices,” she said. “I hear how proud their spouses are of them, and then I have heard some WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

Gargantuan entertainment Virginia Living Museum hosts popular dinosaur exhibit This summer, the Virginia Living Museum will host “Dinosaurs & More!” through Sept. 6.
Stomping, roaring, robotic dinosaurs and ice age mammals come alive at the all-new exciting exhibit from Kokoro, the inventor of robotic dinosaurs. There’s a chance to get up close with dinosaurs including the mighty T-Rex, gentle Apatosaurus mother and baby, Maiasaura, Pteranodon and Pachycephalosaur, Enter the ice age and meet the mighty mammals that succeeded the dinosaurs as the dominant species on Earth: the Smilodon, Baluchitherium and Woolly Mammoth. Kokoro’s exhibits are meant to entertain and educate. Motion is amazingly fluid and lifelike and complex. Walking, feeding, roaring, fighting, hatching and caring for their young - Kokoro models act and interact with realism. The museum keeps with the dinosaur theme by offering, “Dinosaur Days” will be presented in the Wason Amphitheater daily at noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m. The Abbitt Planetarium will show “The Dinosaur Prophecy.” The presentation explores how dinosaurs lived and died. It will be shown at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily. Tickets are $4 plus museum admission. Summer hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Sundays through Aug. 8. John Ammerman is “A Man for All Seasons” If you saw the Virginia Shakespeare Festival’s production of “Macbeth” four years ago, you may be already familiar with John Ammerman’s work. Ammerman, who lives in Atlanta, Ga., played the title role in Shakespeare’s dark tragedy. This summer, he returns to Williamsburg to take on a very different, but no less intense role. Ammerman has been cast to play Sir Thomas More in the Virginia Shakespeare Festival’s production of the famous play. It is a reprisal, of sorts, as Ammerman played the role last year at Theatre in the Square in Atlanta. Ammerman, who was last here as part of the 2008 VSF season to play in “The Complete History of America, Abridged,” welcomed the chance to revisit the role. Christopher Owens, festival artistic director contacted Ammerman about the possibility. “I told him I would be absolutely thrilled to come and work with you (Owens) and come back to Williamsburg,” Ammerman said in a recent interview. Ammerman is confident the play will be well-received for its timeless message and plot. The play recounts Sir Thomas More’s dilemma to obey his conscience in defiance of King Henry VIII. “It is a quite brilliant play,” Ammerman said. “It is good to have a resurgence of the play and have it be seen by people. It is one of those plays that goes away for a long time and then suddenly people start thinking about it again.” Ammerman said he particularly enjoys playing the character because of More’s “conviction and his conscience.” “He also had an interesting sense of humor,” Ammerman added. “He was playful, but was very firm in what he should follow and believe in. My interest was looking at the world from his perspective, and what he risked losing.” In contrast to Macbeth, Ammerman said More takes in the world and reacts to it. “More is a listener, he takes in and evaluates what people say to him,” he explained. “Macbeth is on the train. It is all about him and his ambition. More is about absorbing everything around him. He is a man for all seasons. He absorbs everything and then makes a decision.” Ammerman said the festival is a welcome way for him to spend his summer. “I am thrilled,” he said. “I really enjoy working up there. That is important when you are working around the country, to feel welcomed and to meet different artists. It is a privilege for me to come.”

The National Park Service and APVA Preservation Virginia commemorate the anniversary of the meeting of the first legislative assembly in English-speaking North America at Historic Jamestowne. In 1619, an assembly of delegates from around Virginia convened in the church at Jamestown, the colony’s capital.
