COLONIAL DOWNS Colonial Downs, which opened in 1997, is still one of racing’s newest horse racetracks. It is a stunning state-of-the art facility and is located 20 minutes west of Williamsburg in New Kent County. Take Interstate 64 to Exit 214. Colonial Downs is unique among U.S. tracks. 90% of the thoroughbred races are run on grass, only 10% on dirt. The turf course is 180 feet wide, larger than any other track’s in the country. Since Secretariat was born in nearby Caroline County, the course was named in honor “Big Red” in 1998. The track features two great racing surfaces, the Secretariat Turf Course, and a 1 ¼ mile dirt track. Summer racing is held through July 31. Live at 5 Racing is held Wednesday-Saturday at 5 p.m. and 12:55 on Sunday. A two-day “Racing to the Stars & Stripes” Festival will be held July 2-3 featuring horse racing and fireworks after the races. The 14th running of the Virginia Derby is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 at Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent. The Virginia Derby is Colonial’s annual signature race, and gives the track a chance to showcase its Secretariat Turf course to the nation. The $600,000 (Gr.II) Virginia Derby is the richest and most important race on the Virginia racing calendar. In addition to being one of the largest social events in Virginia, it also annually attracts the best 3year-old turf horses, jockeys and trainers in the nation, including two champions and three Breeders’ Cup winners in just the last five years. Nearly 8,000 racing fans packed the track for the 2010 Virginia Derby. Parties for the event start at 3 p.m and post time is 5 p.m. Those who attend can enjoy festivities and wager. There are a variety of unique trackside parties to make the experience memorable. Don your best headwear and compete in the Virginia Lottery Fancy Hat Contest. You may think you are at the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, while attending the Virginia event. Penny Chenery, Secretariat’s owner, plans to attend Derby Day festivities. The 90year-old Chenery resides in Colorado, and plans to present a trophy to the winning connections of the Chenery Stakes, part of the Derby Day under card. There are two ways to enjoy Derby Day. A $30 allinclusive Trackside Party Zone ticket includes admission, program, tip sheet, BBQ dinner, three beer/wine tickets, music by a disc jockey and a concert with “Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit.” The other option is a Bring Your Own Beverage party in the track’s first turn area, “Hoot on the Hill.” Tailored after a Derby or Preakness-like infield fest, attendees can “bring their own party” by purchasing a $10 “Hoot” ticket. Pop up tents, grills and coolers are all welcome, and the event is hosted by 30 Hooters girls and members of the Richmond Ski Club. Live “yacht rock” music will be provided by “Three Sheets to the Wind.” There are regular seating amenities available on Derby Day as well. Fans can enjoy finish line box

To be Hamlet Aaron White takes on legendary role “To be or not to be, that is the question.” Even those who aren’t Shakespeare aficionados likely know that line is from the Bard’s “Hamlet.” Hamlet, which is the longest, and also likely the best known of all Shakespeare’s tragedies, is the second offering of this season’s Virginia Shakespeare Festival. Hamlet opens July 21 and runs through the end of the month. So when an actor takes on such a larger-than-life role like the Prince of Denmark, there are challenges from the onset. First, how do you make the role your own? Those same lines have been spoken by some of the most famous actors of modern times. Second, how do you make the cerebral soliloquies of the character crackle for audiences? If you are Aaron White, who will play the famous Dane, you begin by knowing yourself. “Hamlet is a philosopher, a theologian,” White said recently in a phone interview from Pennsylvania. “I have been reading a lot, trying to get a bearing on it. Hamlet is a very human being. To go through the journey and to do it sincerely, the personality of the person playing it has to come through.” White has appeared at the festival before, having played Romeo in the 2007 VSF production of “Romeo & Juliet.” Since, White has had various roles at various venues around the country, but welcomes the chance to return to Williamsburg. “I was very happy that they asked me to come back, it is really great,” White said. “I got a call from Christopher (Owens) in August and he asked me what I thought about doing Hamlet.” Although White did an experimental production of the tragedy before, this marks his first “big crack at it.” White admits he has an affinity for ambiance of the campus of William & Mary and respects the festival staff and actors who will take part. “There are some fantastic artists at the festival, and summer festivals are a blast to do,” he said with a laugh. “You work your tail off, but you have fun with the people who are there. I am excited to be back in Williamsburg and on the campus of William and Mary. There is something great about mossy brick walls. The area is great and the people are even better.” In our age of instant messaging and social media, taking time to watch theater may seem unexciting. But it’s the immediacy live theater offers that is invaluable. “One of the reasons I do theater is that it is so
incredibly important for people to get together and share air,” he said. “We live on the computer. But it is important to me, and as human beings to get into a room and share time in the telling of a story, to be entertained.” White will also play Dromio of Syracuse in “The Comedy of Errors.” Shifting from a buffoon to the pensive Hamlet will present the actor with some fun challenges. “It will be interesting to be a clown first and see how people respond to the brooding Dane,” he said. “I am really very excited.” – Ann Efimetz
VIRGINIA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL The 33rd Virginia Shakespeare Festival will present “The Comedy of Errors,” Wednesday-Saturday at 8 p.m. July 6-17. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. It will be directed by Jack Young who will set it in its original Roman setting. “Hamlet” opens July 21 and has the same performance schedule as “Errors” through July 31. It will be directed by Christopher Owens and features fight choreography by David Doersch. For reservations, call 221-2674 or visit www.wm.edu.vsf

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. In search of Seuss Art-cade hosts 11th annual event Each July the Art-cade Gallery holds a special Dr. Seuss art exhibit and sale, The Art-cade is one of fewer than 50 art galleries in the country where authorized Dr. Seuss artwork can be purchased. The event will display limited edition reproductions of Theodor Geisel’s-Dr. Seuss-artwork from his well-known book illustrations and what he painted for his own enjoyment. Also displayed are 3-D wall sculptures Seuss did as an advertising artist. Bronzes of his most famous characters also are there for review and purchase. Many of his most popular tales were first published over 50 years ago. Major Seuss characters are celebrated with striking 50th Anniversary limited edition prints. 2011 is the 50th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’ “The Sneetches and Other Stories.” The book ends recognizing that the characters are more alike than different. A testament to the genius of “The Sneetches” came in 1998 when NATO translated “The Sneetches” into Serbo-Croatian and distributed it to 500,000 children in Bosnia and
Herzegovina as part of an information campaign to help encourage racial tolerance. “Yertle the Turtle” which turned 50 in 2008, showed the fate of a turtle who ran roughshod over everybody and everything in sight. The memorable Seuss Turtle Tower drawing with Yertle precariously balancing on top of others shows the moment before the fall when the folks on the bottom said enough was enough. Individual equality is important. The theme continues in Dr. Seuss’s “Horton Hears a Who” as the elephant in the adventure concludes that “A person’s a person, no matter how small.” Families visiting the gallery in July can register to win a Cat in the Hat cookie jar. For information call The Artcade Gallery at 565-7424 or view other styles of artwork available at www.artcadeonline.com.

Make Room for the Memories.
An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two livinghistory museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Because the history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger!
