Jamestown Memorial Church June is known for weddings. Our area has several distictive settings where couples can celebrate that important occasion.

The church stands behind a brick tower, erected around 1690, which is the only surviving seventeenth-century structure at Jamestown. It is also one of the oldest English-built edifices standing in the U.S. The interior of the Church contains the brick and cobblestone foundations of the 1639 church. The APVA offers rental of the memorial church as a membership service for events consistent with the building’s status as a church and a historic structure. The Church seats 75 and stands another 25. Once someone joins the APVA, in addition to your membership fee, there is a rental fee of $800 for a maximum two hours use of the Church. Those interested in receiving additional information about renting the historic church, can call 229-0412.

The Jamestown Memorial Church at Historic Jamestowne on Jamestown Island provides a historical and picturesque place for important celebrations. The brick church was built in 1907, a gift to the APVA from the National Society of Colonial Dames of America.

OF INTEREST

Watermen’s is now a teaching museum The Watermen’s Museum is getting back to its roots while reaching out to more people than ever. Ravished financially by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, the museum is making a strong comeback. With new and expanded educational programs as well as a renewed emphasis on history, executive director David Niebuhr is hoping to revitalize the image of the museum to attract new visitors and donors. “We really want to start seeing the museum grow with a modern perspective,” he said in an interview. Education programs have been Niebuhr’s focus since he joined as a consultant in 2008. He recently became the executive director. In 2008 the museum offered 200 hours of educational programming. That number grew last year to an estimated 10,000 hours. “We’re going to increase that again this year,” Niebuhr insisted. “Significantly.” A pilot program aimed at those with developmental disabilities was launched last year through a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. The program is expanding now to include at-risk youths. Activities include boat building, Native American rope-making and decoy carving. Staff from the Life Skills Learning Center in Toano helped set the curriculum, and now The ARC of Greater Williamsburg is involved, as well as classes from public schools. “It’s not so much about building boats as it is about getting people to try things in a caring environment and asking for help,” Niebuhr explained. The museum is also expanding the summertime Pirate Camp to 9 one-week sessions aimed at elementary school students. Kids learn about military drills, pirate crafts and colonial games. Bob Oller, president of the museum board of directors, is pleased with the success of the educaWILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JUNE 2010

tional programs, especially Pirate Camp. Some children sign up for multiple sessions. “The instruction and information are presented in a way that they understand and enjoy and want, and that’s exciting,” he said. “We have to grow the interest of the young people and the kids in the community, the people we should be teaching.” The museum’s location on Water Street in historic Yorktown and its proximity below the Yorktown battlefield provide an opportunity to teach marine history. The museum just started a Colonial Fair & Militia Muster, to be held monthly through the fall. “We are trying to link to visitors who are coming from out of town,” Niebuhr said. A big draw for the museum may be the construction of a Row Galley. It’s based on a design by Benedict Arnold for a vessel called the Henry that was commissioned by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. Niebuhr said the ship was built on the York River to defend against the British. The cost of construction will be covered by an anonymous donor. Construction will take place at the museum beginning in a few months. Niebuhr hopes to outfit the vessel with replica 18th century cannons and offer tours of the ship. Oller thinks history is vital to drawing more visitors. “What we’re doing is real dynamic in making sure we’re continually telling the story of the watermen while engaging people in ways they’re interested in and how that relates to the museum.” Niebuhr’s goal is to attract more visitors and donors by proving the museum’s value and relevance to the area. “We need to show them that we’re viable and that the museum is going to be a successful, passionate endeavor and make them passionate too,” he said. Want to go? The Waterman’s Museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. Like to sail? Then you may want to take a day or sunset cruise on the Yorktown-based Schooner Alliance. For the past five years, Alliance has been the gracious host to people from across the country who have taken cruises from the Riverwalk in Yorktown. According to the Schooner Alliance website, The Alliance was built in 1995 by Treworgy Yachts in Palm Coast, Fla. She was built as the “Kathryn B.” and worked as a charter vessel in the Maine Windjammer fleet where it cruised the waters of Penobscot Bay, Me in summer months, and chartered in the Caribbean Islands in winter. In 2005 Yorktown Sailing Charters purchased her and brought her to Yorktown as “The Alliance.” The name was taken from the French and American Alliance that was instrumental in winning the war of Independence in 1781. It also represents the partnership, or alliance, of new owners, Greg and Laura Lohse.

To learn more visit www.vamindswideopen.com

Playwright, actress and storyteller Darci Tucker will perform in a onewoman, interactive play, “Revolutionary Women,” this month as part of the “Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts” initiative. The play examines women’s rights and roles in colonial America and their contributions to the Revolutionary War effort. The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Thursday, June 17 at the Williamsburg Library theater. It will be presented free of charge as part of the library’s Centennial Celebration series. Tucker will portray three women in the production, all with very different views of the revolution. They are considered “revolutionary” because of the strength of their convictions. HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. Cabinetmaker (Allow 30 minutes) Highly skilled cabinetmakers design, build and finish furniture and instruments from desks, chairs and coffins. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. ed his time and expenses. After the plans were secured, Tarvin started contacting area contractors and suppliers to request the donation of labor and materials. “I am happy to say we have been able to get 90 percent of everything we need for free,” Tarvin said. “The people in the community have really stepped up to the plate by donating their services and or materials to this project. I am really thankful for all that they have done.” Tarvin said the work he has done has been extremely rewarding. “It really makes me feel good to know that I am providing the Hospice House with something that will improve their facility,” he said. “They provide such an amazing service to the people of our community and I am glad I have this opportunity to work with them and hopefully build something that will make their lives a little easier.”

Davis Tarvin began scouting at age 6 as a Tiger Cub. He became a Boy Scout when he was 11. Today, Tarvin is an Eagle Scout candidate, who has taken on a large project which will benefit Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg. The project entails the construction of an addition to Hospice House which will be used as a private “retreat area” for guests, staff and volunteers. Tarvin thought the project was a good fit for the goals he had as an Eagle Scout candidate. “After researching the Hospice House and what they provide to the community, I knew I wanted to help them out if I could,” Tarvin said recently. “The addition is something they have been trying to do for several years now, but they needed someone to organize it and help raise the money needed.” Tarvin has called upon other community members to help his goals become reality. Nancy Dempsey Nancy Dempsey said she is known within her church community of St. Bede as “the lady with many shawls.” As she has worn her colorful wears, suggestions that she sell her handiwork have abounded. She stored those thoughts away for many years, but recently launched an online business to showcase and sell her handiwork at www.itssewyou-llc.com. Dempsey, a self-described “craft show addict,” considered purchasing booths so she could offer her products. That is until she happened on the Internet craft community “I discovered the new and ever-increasing craft community on the web,” Dempsey said recently. “What a great way to couple my business degree with my passion for doing anything crafty.” She launched the online shop, It’s Sew You! last January and have enjoyed a steady stream of customers. “The fashion accessories for sale inside my shop are traditional and functional styles, which have been around for many years,” she explained. “That includes shawls, scarves, baby items and my culinary crochet. My goal is to give each a fun and fresh look. Most designs are my original designs.” She said the online business is all-consuming, between creating and handling the online orders. “After I awake and while the coffee is brewing, the computer goes on and my work day begins,” she said. I work about 30 hours a week actually working on my projects, which means sewing, knitting, or crocheting something. Marketing, promoting and researching my site on the web uses about another two or three hours per day.” She said she keeps her inventory low and that most of the purchases made on the site are completed after the sale. She works diligently to ensure the website promotes the products in the best light, and she spends considerable time drumming up interest in her wares. “A lot of my time is spent promoting my website,” she said. “I’m learning there are quite a bit of resources out there. I’ve also found that the social website networks work very well.” WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

She admits that the advantages of having her own business outweigh the disadvantages. “You have low overhead costs from the start,” she said. “And you can make sales, while you are sleeping. Depending on the type of business, your customer base is worldwide. But don’t immediately quit your day job. It may work well for those who want a part-time job, aside from their regular job. Others can turn it into a full-time career. It depends on how much time and energy you want to spend.” Dempsey’s ultimate goal is to work with local and national fashion boutiques to sell her items or serve as one of their suppliers. “And to continue to have fun doing what I’m doing,” she said. Dempsey said the tough economy could discourage some from starting their own website business. “But I say this is probably the best time to do it,” she said. “There are still opportunities out there, if you go out after them. Find something that you really love doing and try to make some money doing it. You never know, until you try.” ––Ann Efimetz Photos by Ann Efimetz

ART BEAT

Desaulniers with painting owner Reggie Akdogan

Poster art selected Local artist Connie Desaulniers’ “Compton Oak” is poster for An Occasion For The Arts It may only be June, but those who work on the annual fall art show, An Occasion for the Arts, are working to keep the October show fresh in people’s minds.

Oct. 3. That’s months in advance of what is usually done. But it had a purpose. “The reason we did it differently this year is because we want to make the image a part of all we send out as part of our whole campaign,” said Judith Bowers, who works with An Occasion in communications. Desaulniers’ work will be used in conjunction with An Occasion’s pre-event publicity and correspondence. It’s also going to be used in marketing materials distributed by the Williamsburg Hotel and Motel Association and the Greater Williamsburg

Last March, a committee selected the vibrant work, “Compton Oak,” by local artist Connie Desaulniers as the poster art for this year’s show, WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JUNE 2010

Chamber & Tourism Alliance. The goal is to have a recognizable image that is easily identifiable with An Occasion. Bowers said all the artists who participated in last year’s show were invited to submit work for the poster art. About two dozen artists submitted pieces. “The entries were in all media, not just paintings, from artists all across the country,” she said. “There was a nice range of things for the selection committee to consider.” When the process wrapped, it was Desaulniers’ work that was selected in a “blind jury” process. No one knew the name of the artist associated with the submitted works. “Compton Oak” fits the image of the fall event well, Bowers said. “It is a stunning image, a vibrant painting,” she said. “We had asked for images that would convey the spirit of an outdoor art show in a historic area. That tree is one of the historic trees in town. It is a combination of the stunning painting and the image being iconic Williamsburg.” Desaulniers actually painted the work in 2007 after taking a photo of the tree on an early morning walk with husband, Marcel. “The glow of the morning sun hitting the tree was magical,” Desaulniers said. “Sometimes timing is everything, especially light on a magnificent tree.” Desaulniers admits the work is the favorite of her tree portraits. “I am especially thrilled it was chosen,” she said.

Advance sales of the poster are available at An Occasion for the Arts website at www.anoccasionforthearts.org ––Ann Efimetz
