Thrills, shows and more Busch Gardens opens for a new season on Saturday, March 26. The new ride, “Mach Tower” is scheduled to make its debut this spring, joining the other thrill rides at the park. The “drop” coaster will open on the site of the current Catapult ride in Germany. It will rise some 245 feet into the air. Get ready, the ascent is 6 feet per second. Every 15 seconds, the ring which holds 30 passengers will rotate 360 degrees. The ring drops at 60 mph. There’s more. Get ready for next year’s introduction of a new coaster on the site of the Big Bad Wolf. This will be a high-speed, electromagnetic launch coaster. It will produce high acceleration in a short distance. These high-speed coasters can produce about 4Gs of gravitational force. Another new feature this season is a revamped Oktoberfest section. Among the additions you can expect is a pretzel market where pretzels and sausages will be make as you watch. There will also be a beer garden and a Maypole for performances. Walk through the past Have you ever been to Historic Jamestowne? It’s a great place to explore. It is located just beyond Jamestown Settlement and is the original site of the Jamestown colony. Jamestowne Island is a great place to walk, birdwatch and experience a glimpse into history. Archaeologists with Jamestown Rediscovery are excavating the recently discovered site of the 1607 James Fort. You can walk among the ruins of many original buildings that stood in the town, including the original 17th-century church tower. The Jamestown Memorial Church was built in 1907. The church was a gift to the APVA from the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. The church is behind the tower which is the only surviving 17th century structure at Jamestown. Walk a bit
and you will be on the James River banks, adding the picturesque quality of the site. The Jamestown Glasshouse produces handcrafted pieces by master glass blowers, only a few yards from where colonists made glass in 1608. Costumed glass blowers demonstrate their craft and answer questions. The Historic Triangle Shuttle, a free public transportation system connecting Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, begins operation March 22. The shuttle leaves every 30 minutes from the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center to Jamestown. Once arriving at Jamestown, additional shuttle services provide transportation between Historic Jamestowne, the Glasshouse and Jamestown Settlement. Photo by Ann Efimetz

Something for everyone When March gets here, it is time for the annual Bid n’ Buy Auction to benefit Child Development Resources. The event has a new location this year, moving from Lafayette High to Hornsby Middle School on Jolly Pond Road. The event is scheduled 11:30 a.m., Sunday, March 13. Proceeds from the annual event helps to provide services for local children with disabilities or those who are at risk for developmental delays. Hundreds of items are available and run the gamut from vacation getaways to spa treatments. Live and silent auctions feature a variety of getaway packages, art, dining experiences, entertainment and items for the home. Gift certificates up for grabs range from those offered by restaurants to hair salons. Each year there are dozens of gift baskets donated by businesses or handcrafted by CDR families. A corps of dedicated volunteers prepare for the event for weeks. On auction day, staff and volunteers coordinate the various activities, provide set up and clean up. The event also includes a food court featuring popular favorires including “Croney” Island Hot Dogs and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. There are also treats from the Country Kitchen and a “Kids Corner” presented by Busch Gardens featuring a costumed character, ideal for photos. Meet Lord Botetourt

If you have ever visited the Wren Courtyard at the College of William & Mary, you have likely met him. The statue of Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt, holds watch over the College Yard in front of the Sir Christopher Wren Building. Ever wonder about the statue’s history? According to information from the College of William & Mary about the statue, Botetourt was the popular royal governor of Virginia 1768-1770. He was a friend and patron of W&M during his tenure. 12
He served as rector of the Board of Visitors and established a fund for the purchase of gold medals to be awarded annually to two students for academic excellence. When Lord Botetourt died in 1770, he was honored with an elaborate funeral and buried in the crypt under the chapel of the Wren Building. The following year, Virginia’s House of Burgesses

BOTETOURT continued commissioned “an elegant Statue... in Marble” as a sign of its esteem. The statue was created by English sculptor Richard Hayward. It arrived in Williamsburg in 1773 and was installed on the piazza of the Capitol. After the capital of the colony was moved to Richmond in 1780, the statue was vandalized and fell into disrepair. Botetourt was still regarded with such affection at the college, that the faculty purchased the statue, and in 1801 it was installed in the College Yard. The statue remained there for the next century and a half, with the exception of several years during and after the Civil War when it was relocated to the grounds of the Public Hospital for safekeeping.
In 1958, to protect the statue from more vandalism and weathering, it was removed to storage. In 1966 it was placed in the Botetourt Gallery of the Earl Gregg Swem Library, where it still remains. It is one of the earliest examples of commemorative public statuary in the United States, and the only one to honor a royal governor. In 1993, when the college celebrated its Tercentenary, a new statue of Lord Botetourt created in bronze by W&M alumnus, Gordon Kray was installed in the college yard, in the place occupied for so many years by the original. During the holidays, Lord Botetourt heralds the season with a wreath.

Awarding excellence Each year the Woman’s Club of Williamsburg awards a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating young woman from Bruton, Warhill, Jamestown and Lafayette High schools. The scholarships are meant to provide some financial help for students to use toward their education at a 4-year college or university. Applicants need to provide a copy of an acceptance letter from the accredited university or college dated by April 15. Members of the Women’s Club pore over the applications sent to them, looking for the student which best exemplifies scholastic achievement and community involvement. While SAT scores and grade point averages figure into the decision for the awards, as important is the work the students do away from the classroom. “A lot of them are giving back to the community,” said Carol Bonesteel, who coordinates the scholarship program with Janell Hunnell. “They are involved at church or at Fish or Grove Christian Outreach.” Each applicant is asked to write a 250-300 word essay on “What This Scholarship Means to Me.” They often expound on their community involvement and what earning the award from the club would mean to them. “They really bring a personal vein into the essay,” Bonesteel said. Applicants need two letters of recommendation from members of their high school staff which can include a guidance counselor or teacher. All applications must be given to the high school guidance counselor. The deadline is April 15. Those who are chosen are invited to a meeting of the club in May where they can share with club members what the award means to them. 18
“They are always very grateful about it, and are so very enthusiastic,” Bonesteel said. She is continually amazed at the activities and community-minded spirit the young people exhibit. “I am always very impressed with the amount of involvement they seem to have,” Bonesteel said. “In addition to all they do, many of them also have jobs. Fresh produce, blooms galore You know spring is right around the corner when the Williamsburg Farmers Market returns. This month, there is one market scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 12. Things really get hopping for the new season beginning April 2. That’s when markets will run 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays through Oct. 29. Some 30 producers and vendors will sell a variety of products including, produce, clams, oysters, cut flowers, organic vegetables, herbs, orchids, baked goods, free range chickens, pork sausage, fish, herbal and goat’s milk bath products, fresh bread and eggs. Market manager Libbey Oliver, said the market usually draws about 1,000 people each week, depending on the season and the weather. Folks travel from near and far, many faithfully. “Folks are regulars even if they aren’t locals,” Oliver said recently. “We have people coming from Virginia Beach, Northern Virginia and Gloucester who make regular trips here.”
People respond to the atmosphere of the market, which combines food, entertainment and culinary demonstrations. “People know that they can depend on very good quality of food and wonderful connections with the farmers,” Oliver said. “And they like the ambiance of the music and the chef tent with demonstrations, all in the nice setting of Merchants Square.” People like the variety of products offered. “We are always trying to have something new and different, as well as the standard things that you can count on,” Oliver said. Even when the weather isn’t optimum, people still make it a point to visit. “Even last fall when it was pretty chilly, you can’t stop people from coming,” she said. – Ann Efimetz

A celebration in music The Virginia Arts Festival will be here in just a couple months. Tickets for the popular “Festival Williamsburg,” are already on sale. Experience at work Gary Byrd has been the real estate industry for some 30 years. During that time, he has been involved in nearly 1,000 real estate transactions. He puts his experience to work each day, helping clients buy and sell homes, assisting in every aspect from contract to closing. One of the best parts of his job is ensuring the process has a positive result. “It is always satisfying to see my clients with a smile on their face at the closing table,” Byrd said recently. He added that people might not realize how much goes into the successful completion of any transaction. “Making the sale can sometimes be the easy part,” Byrd said. “There are many more things that have to be done after a sale like home inspection, termite inspection, appraisals and the problems that can come into play. Realtors are directly involved in each of these things.” Byrd said that the downturn in the economy adversely affected the local and national real estate market. He feels that we are in “a slow recovery.” “Although things have been tough the last few years, our area fared better than most,” he said. “Hopefully as we work through this year and near 2012, things will start progressing to a better market.”

GARY BYRD continued It’s can be challenging finding business, but Byrd is proactive. Byrd said he regularly sends out direct mails to his past client base and to those people who live in neighborhoods he regularly works in. He sends correspondence to potential clients through e-mail or phone. “I am always trying to find ways to better my print advertising as well,” he added. “But of course, the thing I like to do each day is to show homes.” People who move here from other places are generally attracted to our small town setting coupled with our many opportunities. “The thing that people respond to positively is the Historic Area, Busch Gardens and Water Country,” he said. “We also hear how people appreWILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MARCH 2011

People also like our proximity to the beach, mountains, Richmond and Washington.” When he isn’t in the office, you may find him on the golf course, which he wishes he had more time for. “And there is always something around the house I can do to keep me busy,” he added. Byrd said full retirement isn’t for him, at least not anywhere in the foreseeable future. “I get antsy if I don’t get to the office at least every other day,” he said. “I would hope that in ten years I may be semi-retired, and have a little more time for family and a little more time for golf.” – Ann Efimetz

The contemporary swing revival band “Big Bad Voodoo Daddy,” will perform at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 28 in the Virginia Room. Festival Williamsburg will cap with a pair of performances by Tony Award-winner Jane Krakowski at 5:30 and 8 p.m., Sunday, May 29 in the Virginia Room. Krakowski was the winner of the 2003 Tony Award for her role in the Broadway musical “Nine,” opposite Antonio Banderas. Williamsburg Christian Church Fred Liggin recently became the lead minister at Williamsburg Christian Church on John Tyler Lane. The picturesque church seemed the right fit for Liggin whose goal in serving the people of his church is simple.
“I want to love fully, live passionately and give freely of my life to every person that comes my way,” Liggin said. The community of faith has embraced Liggin and his family, and has made his transition smooth and joyful. “They have been greater than we could have imagined,” he said. “This church has authentically loved me, my wife, Alison, and son, Ian, in ways that we could not have imagined. They have become family for us.” Liggin said there are goals within the church, which he is helping the congregation meet. Members are working to bring the message of Jesus more deeply to each other and to those who live in our community. He feels God can work in every life and make what has been broken, whole again. “No matter what you have done or where you have been, God isn’t through with you yet,” he said. “There is hope. There is joy. There is grace. There is life. These things do not come to us because of right

beliefs or right actions, religion or moralism. They come to us because there is a savior, king and lord and His name is Jesus. He has done what we cannot.” Liggin said the church members focus on being “church” everyday, not just on Sundays. “At Williamsburg Christian Church, we want to exist as if we were a gift, sent by God to make His presence in this area tangible,” he said. “For us, it is time to follow Jesus into the hard places, difficult situations and hurting lives in practical ways. It is time for us to lives as people who are learning what it means to give our lives away for God and His redemptive and restorative mission in Jesus Christ.” Liggin said the call to discipleship guides all the programs and ministries of the church.
“We will be a people joined with God in His pursuit of restoring lives through the gospel, and in God’s grace, seek to make a tangible difference in our city,” he said. Members are involved in mission initiatives including Grove Christian Outreach, Vibrant Life Ministries, youth and children’s ministries and small groups. In fact, children’s ministry has been expanded to better serve families. “We are committed to equipping parents to raise their children the way God has called them to,” Liggin said. “So, we need to create environments and dynamic structures within our church to support that effort in exciting, meaningful, theologically rich and practical ways.” – Ann Efimetz 61

Meeting of the minds In 1995, Jan Sarmiere and her sister Rosanne O’Neill, decided they wanted to read more and share their experiences and thoughts with other women. That was the genesis for “Ladies of the Book Club,” which now has about a dozen members who meet seven times a year to discuss books and ideas. “I was never really a reader, and I wanted to be exposed to different types of literature,” Sarmiere said recently. “We have a cohesive group. We have camaraderie and fun, and we discuss books.” Club members are polled each year and are asked what books they would like to read. A biography, a mystery, a classic and a short story are chosen. The group has read dozens of books ranging from classics including “To Kill a Mockingbird” to “The Shack” by William Young, which is a story about a man encountering God. “That was the hundredth book we read,” Sarmiere said. Some of Sarmiere’s personal favorites have included “Shadows of the Wind” by Carlos Zafon, “An American Tragedy” by Theodore Dreiser and “Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson. Sarmiere’s cousin, Eve Rizzo of North Carolina, recently wrote a book about her life in England during World War II. She was a recent guest at a meeting to discuss the book and meet the members. Sarmiere said group members have diverse backgrounds running the gamut from educators to those who had careers in the medical field. The wide range of experience contributes to spirited conversations. “There is a lot of dimension to the group,” Sarmiere said. “Everyone brings their own perspectives.” Sarmiere’s mother, who is 100, often attends meetings and participates in group discussions. The group is currently reading the classic, “Little Women.” Appropriately, they will then read a biography on the book’s author, Louisa May Alcott. “This year it seems we are reading books about all types of families and relationships,” Sarmiere said. “At one time we read books that all had to do with the 19th century. It just sort of happened that way.”
The group was recently featured in “Bookmarks Magazine.” Group members wrote a descriptive article about their group, which was published in the January/February issue. And an added perk? “I won a free subscription to the magazine,” Sarmiere said. Reading a diversity of literature and being part of the group has encouraged the creative spirit within Sarmiere. “I am thinking on writing a book now,” Sarmiere said. “I don’t know if I will ever finish it, but I do have an outline and a summary.
