An Occasion for the Arts expands This year An Occasion for the Arts will offer more than ever. It has become a two-day celebration of the arts which will feature 170 juried artists in various media. Hundreds of volunteers will work to make the event memorable for the thousands expected to converge on our area the first weekend in October. “The volunteer needs for the two days has essentially doubled,” said Jane Medlin-Burton, president of An Occasion’s board. “The response to the need for volunteers has been fantastic. We are especially thankful to the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg which is providing an outpouring of volunteers over the two days.” Events get underway as the Williamsburg Symphonia presents “Music under the Stars” with Steve Lippia as “Simply Sinatra” beginning at 6 p.m., Sept. 30 in Merchants Square. The 43rd annual An Occasion will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 1-2. The artists will exhibit along Duke of Gloucester, Prince George, and Boundary Streets. There will be five performing stages at the Kimball Theatre, the Williamsburg
Library, the Henry Street Stage, the Arcade Stage and the City Square stage. The Blue Talon will present “The Art of Beer,” 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday and “The Art of Wine,” 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Prince George Street. The youth activities have been expanded and will be presented at the Williamsburg Community Building. The City Square Stage will feature the visual youth arts displays as well as music from various youth performing arts organizations. One of the highlights of the weekend of entertainment will be on the City Square Stage, with the celebrated local band Coyote Run at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct.1. Behind the scenes, there are many who will be working to present an exceptional event which will be memorable for those who attend. “The biggest challenge is the organizational detail,” Medlin-Burton said. “Thanks to all of the experienced hands and knowledge behind the previous events for making this happen.” – Ann Efimetz

A moment with Benjamin Rous Ben Rous is the new associate conductor of the Virginia Symphony. This month, the Symphony will perform under the baton of Rous at 8 p.m., Oct. 6 at Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall. How did you arrive at the Virginia Symphony Orchestra? The VSO had an international search for its next associate conductor. I applied along with all the others, and was very lucky to get invited to audition in person. The audition was very thorough--conducting the orchestra, being interviewed by the search committee, and then, fortunately for me, getting invited back to a second round of interviews. I got a great feeling from both the orchestra and the administrative staff, and was very
glad when JoAnn Falletta called my cell phone and offered me the job. What has your experience been thus far? I've never felt more comfortable working with any orchestra than I do with the VSO, and I love going to work, whether it's to conduct or to cover JoAnn Falletta or another conductor. The musicians care deeply about their work, and are always a source of inspiration. What are your duties as associate conductor? One is to program, rehearse, and conduct programs. This season, I'm conducting three “Classics concerts including two in PBK hall, most of the Virginia Symphony Pops season, the Peanut Butter and Jam series for families, the Young People's Concerts for schools, and outdoor concerts all around southeast Virginia. The other main responsibility is to be the Cover Conductor for the VSO any time I am not conducting. That means that I am present at all rehearsals and concerts, assist JoAnn or whoever else is on the podium by listening to the orchestra from the hall, and be prepared to conduct in an emergency. What is your musical vision and how does that fit with the orchestra? Orchestras sound best when they function as chamber groups, when they are lead more by their listening to each other than they are by the conductor's baton. The conductor's job is to lead rehearsals, and, while they play, to help this very large chamber ensemble with gesture when it needs visual assistance, and to stay out of the way when it doesn't. The VSO is a fantastic chamber ensemble and this is why it is so comfortable for me to work with them.

Kiah Hardcastle On Oct. 1, the College of William & Mary will host the second annual Williamsburg National Eating Disorders Association 5K Walk/Run. Junior Kiah Hardcastle has been working tirelessly to get the word out, encourage participation and help continue to bring awareness to the potentially lifethreatening disorders. “I see eating disorders everywhere,” Hardcastle said in a recent interview. “I see people with an unhealthy image of how they look to themselves.” Hardcastle has taken over organizing the walk, following Emily McMillen, who graduated last year. Hardcastle is as passionate as her predecessor about raising money for NEDA, which supports programs and services that work to eliminate eating disorders and improve prevention, treatment and research. “I had volunteered with the walk last year and I really loved it,” Hardcastle said. “It gave a powerful message and raised a lot of money for NEDA. Bringing awareness to it and reminding each person they are beautiful, is why this event is so important.” Last year, nearly 300 people participated, raising $20,000. The local run was the largest held nationally, outside of New York City, she noted. Hardcastle is working with Jenny Fisher and the Collegiate Awareness Regarding Eating Smart task force to promote the race and educate people about risk factors, prevention and treatment. Eating disorders are especially prevalent on college campuses across the U.S. “I think a lot of men and women on campus have an unhealthy body image,” Hardcastle said. “College is stressful, and stress can come out in a lot of ways. Treating your body right shouldn’t be hard but in this age group, it is.” Kathleen MacDonald who is an eating and body image disorders survivor, will speak to the crowd about her experiences. There will be door prizes including gift certificates from Blue
Talon, Food For Thought, Trellis, Student X-Change and Five Guys. “We are hoping for the same great turnout we had last year,” she said. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on race day, Saturday, Oct. 1. The race begins at 10 a.m., MacDonald speaks at 9:30 a.m. For more information: http://neda.nationaleatingdisorders.org/WilliamsburgWalk. – Ann Efimetz

continued from page 8 Do you have ideas/programming that you hope to incorporate? Programs at the VSO are created collaboratively. Once we know the purpose of a given concert--to start the VSO season off with the brilliance of Rachmaninov, to get a group of young people dancing to the music, or, on October 6 in PBK, to make a vivid musical exploration of Jefferson and his world-the particulars usually fall into place. Briefly, what is the relationship between the orchestra, CW, the college and City of Williamsburg? By bringing our Williamsburg concerts back to PBK hall, the
VSO intends to foster a closer relationship with the college and its student population. What kinds of things will the audience hear in the repertoire? The concert on October 6 is all about Thomas Jefferson, our great founding father who was also an avid music appreciator, and was himself an amateur violinist. We start the program with a symphony by Haydn that Jefferson heard while he was in Paris as the Minister to France. We then play "Jefferson in His Own Words" by Judith Shatin, a piece for Narrator and Orchestra in which the text is drawn from Jefferson's writings, giving us a very dramatic and direct experience of the man and his thinking. Finally, we play Beethoven's

violin concerto, which Beethoven composed while Jefferson was president. Our soloist is our concertmaster, Vahn Armstrong, and while we don't think Jefferson would have been quite accomplished enough to play the solo part on the violin, we know he would have appreciated the artistry that Vahn will bring to the performance. What is the experience of coming here to conduct the orchestra like? Are our audiences very receptive? Both concerts I conducted in Williamsburg last season, at Lake Matoaka and the Classics concert, were highlights of the season for me. I think folks in Williamsburg have a very strong interest in the music we play, and they have been very motivated in bringing symphonic music to their city. What is your favorite type of music to conduct? I don't think I have one. I like things for small orchestra and large, from all eras of music. I am lucky that I usually fall in love with whatever I'm working on. What does the future hold? Are you working on any other programs in Williamsburg this season? I will be conducting another Classics concert in PBK hall on February 2, a brilliant program with Simon LaPointe, our principal 2nd violinist, as soloist in the Dvorak Violin Concerto. We are also playing one of Mozart's most divine creations, his symphony #39, and Beethoven's Fidelio Overture. – Ann Efimetz

The Greater Lanexa Studio Tour is scheduled Oct. 22-23. It is a free self-drive tour of seven artist studios. It is just a short drive from Williamsburg. And it’s free! The tour lets people visit the places they like, revisit and browse at their own pace. Artists greet guests, answer questions and offer demonstrations of their skills in various media. They enjoy the chance to see the homes where these works of art are created. According to Weidman, this year there are new artists who will be working harder than ever to offer interesting demonstrations. How about the weather? October is traditionally cooler and

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. Segways on campus As part of the College of William & Mary’s effort to go “green,” the Office of Parking & Transportation has found an environmentally conscious way to get around campus. Parking enforcement officers can now use Segways to travel around campus. According to the college, the use of the two-wheeled Segways have cut fuel costs, replacing large engine vehicles. It’s also easier for officers to maneuver campus parking lots. "While going green was one of the biggest reasons why we purchased the Segways, our decision also had
a lot to do with the nature of the business in terms of parking enforcement officers and how they need to get around campus,” said Bill Horacio, manager of Parking & Transportation. “The specific layout of this campus is more amenable to a Segway than an actual vehicle. They allow you to ride on pathways, walkways and bikeways that are not accessible to your everyday vehicle.” Segways are also being used by W&M’s facilities management department, residential advisors and campus police.

Are you a local? It’s fun to jog the memory and think about all the changes that have happened in this area over the pasts several decades. Those who have been here for 20-plus years certainly moved to a different place than what it is now. This month we will begin running a “You know you are a local when...” Starting with: You know you are a local when...you remember when the U.S. Post Office was located in the building that now houses Seasons Restaurant. The post office moved to its current location on Lafayette Street in the early 90s. Better parking, for sure. – Ann Efimetz

Believe in ghosts? Halloween is this month. A couple of books about local ghost sightings should conjure up some spooky feelings. “Ghosts of Virginia’s Tidewater” is a reprint of L.B. Taylor’s 1990 book “The Ghost of Tidewater.” It includes a lot of ghost stories from our area, including Williamsburg. There are stories about “Mad Lucy” of the Ludwell-Paradise House in Colonial Williamsburg and another story, “The Puzzling Riddle of the Refusal Room.” Taylor also includes stories about sightings in areas across the area including Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Norfolk, the Eastern Shore and points north and west. The hauntings recounted in the book date from early days of Jamestown to the present. There are traditional ghost stories and accounts of poltergeists and unexplained mysteries. The book sells for $19.99, can be purchased online or through the Taylor who will personally autograph the book. Send to 108 Elizabeth Meriwether, Williamsburg Va. 23185 and include $3 for postage. For more information, e-mail vaghosts@cox.net. “Virginia’s Haunted Historic Triangle” was written by Pamela Kinney and recounts ghost stories from Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown and other area locations including Charles City plantations, Gloucester, Poquoson, Newport News and Hampton. The book also contains stories about other phenomena including The Cohoke Light in West Point, Big Foot and UFOs. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, OCTOBER 2011
The book contains several accounts regarding ghost sightings in Colonial Williamsburg’s buildings including The Governor’s Palace, The Robert Carter House, George Wythe House, Public Hospital, Carters Grove, Bassett Hall and several taverns. Jamestown and Yorktown have their share of ghost action with stories of encounters. There are also accounts of hauntings at an area hotel, on local roads and at the College of William & Mary. The book is available through online bookstores. – Ann Efimetz

A sidewalk repair project outside the Wren Building has uncovered what campus archaeologists believe could be slave quarters from the 1700s. A brick foundation measuring 20 by16 feet extends underneath a sidewalk on the south side of the Wren. Joe Jones, director of the William & Mary Center for Archaeological Research, said that the type of mortar used in the foundation helped reliably date it to the 18th century. He said it could be more recent than the Wren Building itself, circa 1695-1700. Neil Norman of the W&M Department of Anthropology put the foundation at three brick courses wide, eliminating some functions including privy, stable or smokehouse. Norman is a participant in the Lemon Project, the college’s effort to examine its role in slavery. It is named after an enslaved man who appears in records from the early 1800s. The dig site has been filled in for now, but a full-scale excavation is planned. “The discovery of these foundations is too important to rush the process,” said Louise Kale, director of William & Mary’s Historic Campus, in a release. “We need some time to put together a partnership of all the necessary scholars to interpret this site.” Jones said the Center for Archaeological Research found evidence of foundations in the area during test digs prior to proposed utility improvements. The expectation that there could be more hidden in the soil and beneath the sidewalks is what prompted Kale to ask Jones to conduct a preliminary dig.

Celebrate autumn Need an event that provides fun for the whole family while helping local charities? A short ride to Toano for the 11th annual Hickory Neck Family Fall Festival may be the ticket. The event draws several hundred locals and visitors who can sample delicious food, hear quality music and a participate in a host of activities for kids. The event is scheduled 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 on the grounds of the historic church located on Richmond Road. Last year the event raised approximately $12,000 which was given to area charities including Grove Christian Outreach Center, Spirit Works, Faith in Action, Angels of Mercy, H.E.L.P., and others. The fare includes homemade barbecue, sausage, hot dogs and other lunch favorites with treats from the “Amazin Grazin” bakery and gourmet items sale. “There will be a lot of good things to eat,” said festival chair John Rothnie. “We also have a donation of Chick-fil-A sandwiches from the Mooretown Road store.” Children’s activities will include a moon bounce, hay rides and face painting. There will be a variety of
bands which will offer bluegrass, gospel, Broadway and patriotic tunes. Get a start on Christmas shopping at the arts & crafts show or find a unique item at “Attic Treasures.” The silent auction will feature more than 100 items including gifts certificates to local shops, restaurants, golf venues and services. Tours of the historic chapel will also be available during the event. “The people who come to the event have a good time,” Rothnie said. “It is great fellowship for us within our church and it also helps us to show others what we offer. And we are pleased with the amount of money we are able to present to the charities.” One variable that Rothnie hopes cooperates. “We are hoping for cooler weather than we had last year,” he said. “It was about 100 degrees, and hardly felt like fall. But,” he added. “At least it wasn’t raining.” – Ann Efimetz
