Eating up the new year You may have a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight in 2013. That’s ok. Eating out can be healthy, depending on your choices. Locally there are dozens of restaurants which can offer the health conscious and those who want to indulge with the fare they are after. Out-of-town visitation dips during January and February, making it a great time to treat yourself, friends or loved ones to a meal. This is a wonderful time of year to try a new restaurant. Several area restaurants offer specials to locals. Ask if there are any special rates for residents during these months. Coupons abound and can offer a significant savings off the bill. Restaurant choices run the gamut from homemade Italian fare to Asian. There are formal establishments and those with an accent on casual. Dining out can be a great antidote to the winter doldrums. After the holidays, people may feel let down. Having a nice meal with a friend, family member or loved one can provide a pick-me-up. The Williamsburg Area Restaurant Association has a comprehensive list. Visit www.williamsburgarearestaurants.com for information on specific restaurants, their specials, hours and general information. –Ann Efimetz

Still time to skate Ice skating is a great outdoor activity. It burns calories, tones muscles and provides people with a fun way to spend time with each other. There is still time locally to take advantage of the new skating rink at New Town. Iron-Bound Gym, Town Management and James City County have partnered to offer a synthetic ice skating rink in Sullivan Square, behind Legacy Hall. It has been a great hit, and people have enjoyed the new venue. You don’t have to worry about temperatures to freeze ice. The skate rink surface is made of an EZ Glide 350 synthetic ice

surface versus ice surface, and is suitable for skaters of all ages and abilities. Hours are Jan. 4-13, Saturday, 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m. and Sunday noon-7:30 p.m. Operation hours may be adjusted based on weather conditions, participation numbers and special events. Skating is $7 per person including skate rental, or $5 per person with your own skates. For more information on skating, call the Park Office at 259-5360 or visit jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation. –Ann Efimetz

Catholic schools celebrated The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2013 is “Catholic Schools Raise the Standards.” The annual observance starts the Sunday, Jan. 27 and runs through Feb. 2. The 2013 theme supports the recent launch of the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools, that ensure the effective operation and responsible governance Catholic schools across the country. Walsingham Academy, which is our local Catholic School for grades PreK-12th grade, will celebrate the week with a variety of events. The school will hold an Open House, 1:30-3:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, “A Taste of Walsingham.” Families who are interested in learning more about

Walsingham Academy are encouraged to attend the Open House to talk with students, administrators and teachers. The week coincides with “Spirit Week” which celebrates a theme. Upper School students are invited to dress accordingly. The week also includes a celebration of Mass, and also encourages students the chance to participate in activities which highlight the nine Mercy Core Values of dignity, integrity, spiritual growth and development, respect, hospitality, appreciation of diversity, compassion, justice and service. –Ann Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury (Allow 30 minutes) Armoury Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury reflects the complexity and urgency of mounting a war effort against the world’s most powerful 18th-century nation. The newly reconstructed site features main armoury building, four blacksmith forges and the recently reconstructed kitchen. The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials.

January See & Do • “Ghosts Among Us” – When the sun goes down, Williamsburg has a haunted history to tell. This tour enters some of the haunted buildings and sites where ghostly inhabitants have appeared. Each of these one-hour walking tours introduces guests to a different cast of characters. Due to subject matter, this program is not appropriate for young children. $13. January 19 at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Reservations required. Tour begins at Greenhow Lumber House. • Capitol Concert – An evening of 18th-century music played by members of the Governor's Musick is performed in the acoustically brilliant hall of the House of Burgesses in the Capitol. The harpsichord and other popular instruments of the era come to life in a performance of festive music from the colonial period. The candlelit setting is a fitting backdrop for what Thomas Jefferson described as a “delightful recreation.” January 20 at 7 p.m. Separate ticket required. • “Keeping Time” – An exhibition of nearly 30 historic clocks from the Colonial Williamsburg collection is on view at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum through February. The dual importance of a clock’s monetary value and family significance has made clocks the ideal object to be passed down through generations as family heirlooms. Tall case clocks evoke memories of ancestors and the passage of time (hence the 20th-century names of “grandfather” and “grandmother” clocks). But what do they tell us about the men who made them and the first families who owned them? This exhibit showcases a group of Southern clocks and explores the clock mechanism and wooden casework, the history of the form, the trade practices of the makers, and ownership and cost. The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in January •Historic Taverns – In the 18th century, these public houses were gathering places for residents and travelers. Today, Colonial Williamsburg’s taverns offer menus similar to popular fare enjoyed by patriots like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry. Guests experience how some of America’s most illustrious figures ate and socialized. Winter is a great time to enjoy a tavern meal. At least one Historic Area tavern is open daily throughout the month of January. Reservations and information are available by calling 757-229-2141 or 1-800-447-8679. • Winter Concert – Colonial Williamsburg and the Virginia Arts Festival present Rosanne Cash in concert at the Williamsburg Lodge at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2. The Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter headlines a winter concert weekend with one performance. Seating in the Virginia Room is cabaret-style. Tickets are $35 and $45, available through Ticketmaster.com. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

The holidays are over and it has yet to show signs of spring locally. However, there are several outdoor activities during the winter months that can be pleasant despite the colder temperatures. Walking through the campus of the College of William & Mary can provide a lovely respite. The campus is a wonderful place to stroll and there are many things to see. Crim Dell is a favorite no matter what time of year. The picturesque arched bridge, which spans a small pond, is entrenched with history. Crim Dell was a gift from the class of 1964, a friend of the college, David Baer and the family of John W.H. Crim. There is a

plaque near the bridge honoring the memory of Crim, his wife Amelia and daughter, Barbara. Former W&M president Davis Paschall’s words at the dedication of Crim Dell in 1966 are forever remembered in a plaque near the footbridge. “That one may walk in beauty, discover the serenity of the quiet moment, and dispel the shadows....” The Sunken Gardens are also a quiet place to walk. Take the stairs up and down on either side for a great workout. As the temperature warms during spring, the campus will come alive with vibrant greenery and flowers. –Ann Efimetz

First Night 2013 First Night is Monday, Dec. 31. The festivities begin with a Kids Show for young families at Matthew Whaley Elementary, 3-7 p.m. Main stage performances begin at 6 p.m. Every year thousands converge here to experience a variety of family entertainment, food and a grand fireworks display at midnight. The main focus of the event is family entertainment. Live performances are held on several stages including the College of William & Mary and area churches. All the venues are indoors, so weather isn’t a factor. Performances run the gamut from speciality acts to musicians. Over the years a broad partnership has formed and the City of Williamsburg offered the Kimball Theatre and the Williamsburg Community Building. Admission to the event is with a button, which will be on sale at locations throughout greater Williamsburg. Buttons are $15 per person. Children 5 years of age and under are admitted for free. Buses are free to anybody with a First Night button. They run every 15 minutes from 6 p.m.-1 a.m. There is a map for bus routes and stops. Food vendors will have food and drinks available for sale throughout the evening. The grand finale begins at 11:45 p.m. at Zable Stadium at The College of William & Mary. Fireworks go off at midnight. Plan what you want to see using the First Night map and schedule. Try to find at least one alternative event because sometimes shows fill up fast. For more information, visit www.firstnightwilliamsburg.org. 35

Hugs for health Now’s the time to get close to those you love. And, it’s good for you. National Hug (or Hugging) Day is Monday, Jan. 21. It is annual holiday, which by the way, is officially recognized by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. According to the website Holiday insights, National Hugging Day was created in 1986 by Rev. Kevin Zaborney from Caro, Mich. It has since spread to Canada, England, Australia, Germany and Poland. There have been studies linking health benefits to getting hugged. Hugs cab increase the “bonding” hormone, oxytocin and decrease the risk of heart disease. A good hug can also lower blood pressure and reduce stress. A study has found that hugging and hand holding reduces the effects of stress. Therapeutic touch has also been shown to reduce stress and pain among adults, and may reduce some symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, such as restlessness and pacing. So open your arms and get close, and make it a daily habit. –Ann Efimetz

Mega service at auto spa Mega Auto Spa on John Tyler Highway (Route 5) offers a variety of car wash services. It opened last spring and has enjoyed a steady growth in customers. The business is locally owned by Mathew and Denise Blanchard. Their two sons, Mark and Allain run the business with them. Mega Auto Spa focuses on customer service and quality using state-of-the-art equipment. “The real focus we have here, and I try to keep it simple with my employees, is customer retention,” Blanchard said in a recent interview. “We give them an experience that they feel com-

fortable with, in a clean and safe environment.” Blanchard realizes the important role vehicles play in people’s lives. “Cleaning a car is like having someone coming into your home,” he said. “It is a private space. You have to show a lot of respect, that you care about the car.” Blanchard said he hires people for his staff who are highly motivated and detail-oriented. Having car wash experience is secondary to their desire to serve the customer with excellence. continued on page 47

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine.

Business at the car wash is busiest from October through April, and falls off during the summer, Blanchard said. “Peak time is now to February and March,” he explained. “If we get any snow at all, with all the salt on the road people want to get that off their cars.” During peak season, visitation jumps from a 200-car day to 500-600 cars. Services run the gamut from a simple car wash and self-serve vacuum for $9 to a full detail, which could run several hundred dollars. The nine-bay detail center provides customers with an express detailing, which takes about 20 minutes. More extensive details takes longer and can include restoration of paint, a polish, wax and full interior detail. “It depends on what you want to have done to the car,” he said. Mega uses the latest technology is in the tunnel. The equipment allows the use of a combination of soaps and brushes, friction and high pressure water to maximize the wash. “People tell me that ‘My car is shiner and stays cleaner longer,’” he said. “That is one of the big benefits to coming here.” –Ann Efimetz

Winter series of festival this month This month the Virginia Peninsula Jewish Film Festival continues at the Kimball Theatre. At the end of the month, “Free Menâ€? will be shown. The movie is scheduled Jan. 26-27 at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. According the Internet Movie Data Base, the ďŹ lm is about the true story of a Muslim man, Younes, played by French-Algerian actor Tahar Rahim, and his journey from black market salesman to nomadic peace-monger/freedom ďŹ ghter. Younes has been part of the black market for some time now and he is caught by police and agrees to become a spy of the Parisian mosque. It is there at the mosque, Younes witnesses a musical and vocal performance by Salim, a Jewish street performer. The power of music is especially strong in this story, as it mends the tension that is built between the character of Younes and Salim. The power of music also helps Younes ultimately realize that he is ďŹ ghting against the cause with this government-installed spy job, and he soon stops collaborating with police in order to ďŹ ght for what he truly believes in, which is freedom. The ďŹ lm festival is sponsored by Temple Beth El and has brought award-winning ďŹ lms to the area for more than a decade. The ďŹ lms offered are chosen to appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Positive results The decision for Discover Teas to advertise with the Williamsburg Magazine was an easy one! Knowing that our ad would be widely seen by the local market as well as visitors, it just made sense. Budgeting for only one print ad our first quarter, we needed the biggest bang for our buck. And we got it! Our Grand Opening was a huge success, and we continue to see a steady flow of residents and visitors walk through our doors ready to Discover Teas. -Chris Farishon & Kenneth Roberts of Discover Teas

The American Red Cross has named January National Blood Donor Month to encourage people to roll up their sleeves and give the gift of life. Blood donations taper during and after the holiday season, but the need for blood doesn’t The Red Cross needs to collect 500-600 units of blood every day in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Working toward a better you Now’s the time to make a New Year’s Resolution. It’s estimated that more than 40% of American adults make one or more resolutions each year. Sticking to the resolutions is a bit trickier. A lot of people who make New Year’s Resolutions do break them, research shows that making resolutions is useful. People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions. According to USA.gov, here are the most popular New Year’s Resolutions that are popular year after year. Drink less alcohol Get a better education Get a better job Get fit Lose weight Manage debt Manage stress Quit smoking Reduce, reuse and recycle Save money Take a trip Volunteer to help others Locally there are places that can help people who make these resolutions stick to them. Two decades of compassionate care Olde Towne Medical Center celebrates milestone For the past two decades, Olde Towne Medical Center has provided compassionate and expert medical and dental care to uninsured or underinsured area residents. This month, the clinic, located on Olde Towne Road is celebrating a milestone. The staff and supporters of the clinic will have a gala celebration to recognize those who were instrumental in the clinic’s creation and growth and to look forward. The event will be held Jan. 26 in the Virginia Room at the Williamsburg Lodge. Ticket are $95 each, table of 10 for $950. The evening begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. Music will be provided by the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra Dinner is scheduled for 7 p.m. followed by dancing to the music of the Williamsburg Classic Swing Orchestra. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2013

During the event physicians Tom Tylman and Tom Luckam, medical and dental program founders, will be honored. Several of the clinic’s myriad volunteers will also be recognized. Olde Towne Medical Center was formed with the mission “to provide quality, cost-effective, coordinated and preventative primary health care to clients, regardless of ability to pay.” Over the years, services have diversified and expanded. Several programs have been added to address the needs of the community including diabetes and asthma education classes, chronic care, a state-of-the art dental clinic, and other preventative services. The center is now operated as a family practice staffed by a medical director, dental director, clinical director, physician and dental assistants.

The center continues to rely on dedicated volunteers. Approximately a dozen local physicians, 16 dentists and 45 other non-medical individuals provide on average over 650 volunteer hours monthly. The center provides more than 1,350 medical and dental patient visits per month. Services will continue to expand to address growing needs. Recently, a new website was developed to help provide easier access to information regarding the center and its programs, staff and volunteers. For more information about the gala, visit www.oldetownemedicalcenter.org. –Ann Efimetz
