But for the women who participate in Mothers of Preschoolers or MOPS program, that word has nothing to do with cleaning house. MOPS is a Christian support for mothers of children ages birth through kindergarten, which offers support and friendship through guest speakers, small group discussions and creative activities. Emily Duffy began attending a MOPS group at King of Glory Church on Longhill Road in 2007, when her son, Jake was 4 months old. She soon stepped into the volunteer coordinator position, and has been serving in that capacity since. There are other MOPS groups around town, including one at Williamsburg Community Chapel. Jessica Grimes is one of the moms who attend. “What I enjoy most about our group is the sense of community that we all share,” Grimes said. “Our mission is that no mom feels alone during this challenging time in our lives. To be able to share the ups and downs of parenting with each other is such a blessing.” At King of Glory, Duffy said there’s been a huge jump in attendance, doubling membership in a short time. “At King of Glory we have tried very hard to make the community aware of MOPS,” she said. “This is not just a support group for members of our church. We look at it as a ministry to all the moms in the Williamsburg. It is my hope that every mother of a preschooler is aware that MOPS exists and that no

mom is alone in the journey of motherhood.” The groups are comprised of women from various backgrounds and experiences, she said. “There are single moms, working moms, stay-at-home-moms, moms of multiples and military moms,” Duffy said. “It is an amazing group of women.” Duffy said there are many benefits women can find in joining the group, including: • Support and friendship - MOPS helps to let women know they are not alone. • Leadership - The program allows women a chance to grow as leaders, gain experience and selfconfidence. • Opportunities to give back - Groups support various community organizations. • Christian faith Provides a chance for the women to grow in their Christian faith, connect with a church if they do not have a home church, and for some to simply learn about Jesus, His love and His forgiveness. “Faith is a part of the meetings at King of Glory in many ways,” Duffy said. “Our group discussions include opportunities to share how God is working in our lives. We also take prayer requests from the group and close each meeting in prayer.” Want to go? The evening group meets at King of Glory twice a month, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, and twice monthly 9:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays. Visit the website www.mops.org for more information. Williamsburg Community Chapel group meets on alternating Tuesdays 9:30-11:45 a.m. through May. Contact chapelmops@gmail.com Bruton Parish Church MOPS group, 229-2891. –Ann Efimetz

William & Mary Theatre will open the hugely popular Rogers & Hammerstein musical “Oklahoma!” this month. Those familiar with the movie will recall the expansive opening when Curly, atop his steed, surveys the expansive fields around him and exclaims (in song, of course) “Oh What A Beautiful Mornin.’” So how do you approximate the vast surroundings of an Oklahoma cornfield in the confines of Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall? Leave that to scenic designer Matthew Allar who has been designing sets at W&M and wowing audiences with his creativity. “The challenge with Oklahoma is to offer the audience a glimpse into his (Curly’s) experience,” Allar said recently. “It’s not possible to fit acres of field on the PBK stage, our goal is discover the essence of that visual feeling and present that to our audience.” Allar has more than a dozen years of professional scene design to his credit. He has a lifelong affinity for the theater and began his interest in the stage performing in grade school performances. When he reached high school, his focus changed. “It wasn’t until high school that I became aware of the technical side of the theatrical experience,” he said. “I was extremely lucky to be encouraged and mentored by a series of wonderful high school and college, educators who help me first learn to appreciate the art form, and then later on, how to create it.” His creations have been setting a high standard at PBK. Last summer he designed sets for the Virginia Shakespeare productions of “As You Like It” and “A Man for All Seasons.” The work was challenging, but Allar rose to the occasion, presenting sets, which were both practical and aesthetically pleasing. The work to bring the world of a production is a long process. “Every project begins with the text, or in the case of an opera, musical or dance piece, the music, which really is the most immediate pathway to critical question of what story we telling, and how the story will be told,” he said. Those questions have to be answered when designing how to transport audiences into the world of the story. He added that in “Oklahoma!” the audiences must WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, NOVEMBER 2010

“travel” to several locations/ “As a scenic designer, one of my goals is support this structure of story telling with environments that echo the rowdy gang of cowboys, as well as the surreal dream state of the show’s famous act one ballet.” Allar enjoys the challenges presented by each production that is given to his expertise to design. At W&M he said he is particularly gratified working with the students. “They are across the board among the hardest working people I have ever had the opportunity to work with,” he said. And what’s in the future? “By the time the Oklahoma! wraps, I’ll already be looking toward the February production of Rhinoceros,” he said. “And then later on The Rover, both of which will be produced at the college in 2011.” –Ann Efimetz

Seeing g reen on Black Friday Think quick. What day is Nov. 26? For those who know Thanksgiving is the 25th this year, they will immediately know that Friday, Nov. 26 is “Black Friday.” The day is traditionally thought to be the busiest shopping day of the year, although many retailers report the Saturday before Christmas is when they make the most money. Whatever the statistic, there is no denying that Black Friday is a popular shopping day. Most people have off from work and use the day to get a jump start on holiday shopping. Don’t forget to try to buy local! Many of our area outlet and shopping areas have special hours, with some opening at midnight or in the wee hours of the morning. Discriminating shoppers may get in line hours before the doors open to get bargains before they are all gobbled up. Many stores have special offers with very low prices on some goods, particularly on electronics and popular toys. Televisions, laptops, computers, GPS systems, DVD and MP3 players, digital cameras and video games are all hot sellers on Black Friday. And the bargains aren’t just at actual stores. Online retailers also take advantage and offer great deals online. There are several websites and a Facebook page which gives people a sneak into online and actual store bargains. Here are a few to check out which can provide tips for local shopping with information about bargains. www.blackfriday.info, www.blackfriday.net, www.blackfriday.org and www.blackfriday.com –Ann Efimetz

just for fun

Let’s talk turkey Thanksgiving Day brings families together to enjoy bounteous buffets featuring the staples of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, squash and cranberry sauce. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving. Later, President Franklin Roosevelt clarified that Thanksgiving should always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping. If this year keeps apace with last, nearly 40 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more away from home over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. That’s according to AAA, which keeps tabs on travel. If you want to regale your friends and family with facts about Thanksgiving, here are some conversation starters, thanks to U.S. Census Bureau. And don’t forget, when you sit down to eat your turkey, you are getting a great source of iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and B vitamins. And that sleepy feeling you get after stuffing yourself with turkey? That’s from an amino acid, tryptophan, a natural sedative in turkey. 271 million –– Approximate number of turkeys raised in the U.S. last year. 689 million pounds - Approximate amount of U.S. cranberry production. Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington all produce cranberries. 1.8 billion pounds –– The total weight of sweet potatoes produced by major sweet potato producing states in 2007. North Carolina, California, Mississippi and Louisiana all produce significant amounts of sweet potatoes. 1.1 billion pounds –– Total production of major pumpkin-producing states in 2007. Illinois, Ohio, California and New York are largest pumpkin producers. 13.3 pounds –– The quantity of turkey consumed by the typical American each year. 3 –– Number of places in America named Turkey. There’s Turkey, Texas Turkey Creek, La. and Turkey, N.C. 116 million ––Number of households across the nation, which are potential gathering places for people to celebrate the holiday. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, NOVEMBER 2010

class acts Age: 17 School: Junior, Warhill High School With her sister, started the local 4-H Furry Friends Pet Therapy Dog Club.

Erin Giblin Erin Giblin started raising guide dogs with a 4-H Club when she was living in California several years ago. When she and her family moved to Virginia, Giblin wanted to continue working with dogs while helping others in the community. There weren’t any guide dog puppy raising opportunities nearby, but she still wanted to work with dogs in the 4-H setting. That’s when she and her sister started the local 4-H therapy dog club “Furry Friends.” It is part of a national, 4-H project called Pet PALs. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, NOVEMBER 2010

Giblin and her dog, Ella, are regular visitors to area nursing homes, Avalon: A Center for Women and Children and other community organizations. She enjoys the chance to bring joy to those who need it most. “The sparkle in the eyes of Alzheimer’s patients in that moment of recognition, or the excitement, which includes shrieks and giggles, from the kids at Avalon upon seeing the therapy dogs, is the best part,” Giblin said recently. Sometimes, when time allows it, Giblin and those who visit the facilities, can allow individual time with the dogs and clients. Photo courtesy Erin Giblin “At Avalon, we teach the kids some basics in the taking care of a dog. They get to brush the dog’s coat, walk the dog, play fetch, and brush the dog’s teeth,” she said. No matter what the setting, Ella gets a warm reception. “The general response when people see a dog, is one of excitement and sudden adoration,” she said. “When visiting nursing homes, Pet PALs not only reaches out to the residents, but also the staff. Nurses often stop to greet the therapy dogs in the hallway.” Giblin’s future plans include her goal to attend the Air Force Academy and become a pilot. No matter where life takes her, she said she will continue reaching out to others. “My experiences now with therapy dog work will definitely have an impact for my entire life,” she said. “I cannot imagine ever giving up community service and I hope to delve further into joining my love of animals with my desire to do good things for people in my community.” –Ann Efimetz 49

just for fun

Winter is coming But how much snow will we get? So how early do you think it will snow this year? Before Christmas? Before New Year’s? Well, if you believe the Farmer’s Almanac, this area may see a colder than usual winter with more precipitation than we normally see.

There was a similar prediction last year, which proved all too accurate if you remember our cold, snowy winter. The “Old Farmer’s Almanac,” and its competitor, the “Farmer’s Almanac” both predict that the area from New England to Florida and as far west as the lower Ohio River and Mississippi River Valley will experience colder-than-normal winter temperatures. If you are planning a trip to New England for skiing this winter, bring your woolies, as that area is predicted to receive way colder-than-normal temperatures. Then there’s National Oceanographic National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which predicts a warmer than normal winter for the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Who to believe? I guess we will know come March. If you want to find out about local weather happening right now, visit the Keck Environmental Field Laboratory at the College of William & Mary website at www.wm.edu/as/kecklab. Keck Lab gives real-time weather and also has archives of local conditions dating back to 2003. –Ann Efimetz

“Beautiful Little Favors

for Big Emotions” In Italian, “Bel Sentimento” means beautiful feeling. When you look at one of the pieces created by Giuliana Rescigno, the company’s owner, you may realize how accurate that title is. “The company’s name was actually suggested by my husband whom I met and married in Italy in the 1970s,” Rescigno said. “Late last year I decided to introduce the bomboniere, as they are called in Italy, or favors to the Williamsburg area.” Rescigno said the desire to share the pieces with others began with her daughter’s wedding. “Beautiful memories from my own wedding in Italy came to mind during the planning stages and I decided to keep alive the tradition of gifting favors to guests on my daughter’s special day.” After the wedding, Rescigno decided to stay current with trends in Italy and Europe and to create favors for others celebrating special events. Bonbonniere in French means holder of bon-bon, or candy. In Italy, bomboniere are traditionally given to each couple invited to a wedding by the bride and groom towards the end of the wedding reception/dinner. The piece usually consists of five Jordan almonds placed inside a small bag or other container. “It can be as simple or elaborate as one desires,” she explained. The word confetto derives from Latin word “confectum,” which means prepared or confectioned and in WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, NOVEMBER 2010

medieval times referred to a dried fruit covered with honey. “The tradition is to give five confetti as a good wish for love, health, prosperity, happiness and longevity,” she said. Bel Sentimento offers favors for all events. Each piece is handmade, and Rescigno takes great pride in stitching together satin pochettes and linen flowers in various colors and styles. Each favor has a personal touch and can be designed and fabricated to satisfy a customer’s individual tastes. Rescigno can create an array of gold-toned favors for a 50th anniversary, silver for 25, New Year’s Eve celebrations, high school or college graduations in school colors or theme-based colors for a birthday or holiday celebrations. Bel Sentimento also offers a variety of boxes, Limoges dishes, pendants, porcelain figurines for baby showers and crosses for First Communion. “I am always trying to get the latest items and materials from Giuliana Rescigno Europe,” she said. “I am helped by my brother who lives in Italy and can deal directly with well-respected suppliers and attend bomboniere expos and fairs.” For more information visit www.belsentimento.com, call 810-9302 or visit Coco Chocolatier in New Town, which has some of Rescigno’s work on display. –Ann Efimetz Photos by Ann Efimetz

Holiday Antiques Show The annual Holiday Antiques Show will be held at the Kingsmill Marriott Nov. 26-28. Dealers from 13 states and the United Kingdom will offer their wares and be part of the show. This year’s show will feature new dealers with a focus on antiques for investment. That aspect should appeal to new collectors who would like to incorporate something of value along with artistic merit to decorate their homes, which are more modern in style. Here are some of the dealers you can expect to meet: • Dave White from Maine with a collection of nautical antiques. • Fanshawe Blaine, Victoria Brock from England and Amanda Harman from America offer an eclectic mix of English, European and Eastern 17th, 18th and 19th century furnishings, textiles and accessories. The items featured by this pair are fitting for modern settings as well as more traditional ones. • Grindle and Caputo from Maine who show and sell antique hooked rugs for investment. The handmade rugs are used as artwork and hang in modern homes offering a unique presentation. • Marie Miller from Vermont is a well-known and reputable quilt dealer. She will offer some graphic quilts, which can be displayed as art. Those who attend will find an array of merchandise including estate jewelry and silver, small trinkets suitable for gift giving, oriental carpets, paintings, clocks and furniture both period and country. It may be an ideal time to get a jump on Christmas shopping. In addition to the show there will be an appraisal clinic held on Sunday with the proceeds to be donated to a charitable cause. The cost for the appraisal is $10 per item. A reservation will be necessary and can be made by calling 2201299. For more information, visit www.holidayantiqueshows.com

Give thanks at annual service Williamsburg Clergy Fellowship will hold its annual Thanksgiving Day Service for the community at 4 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Playbooth Theatre on Palace Green. Interfaith prayers, seasonal hymns and Thanksgiving proclamations from the past and present will be featured during the brief, but meaningful service. It is open to the public and no ticket is required. In the event of rain, the service will be held in Bruton Parish Church on Duke of Gloucester Street.

Last year more than 300 people attended the service. It has become a popular event for visitors and locals. Those who attend can come as they are and participate in the service, which incorporates various religious traditions. Some make it a point to plan their holiday plans to accommodate attending the service. Usually representatives of 7-10 faiths are represented at the service. There are also several area youth involved. The service is presented in conjunction with Colonial Williamsburg which includes information about the service in its Visitors Companion.
