Special events to honor veterans Only once every century does the calendar read 11-11-11. And this year, to commemorate Veterans Day which is Friday, Nov. 11, a special tribute will be held. The Virginia Veterans Tribute is a weekend of events held here in support of those who have served our country. “The state has involvement in this tribute and it is happening right here in Williamsburg,” said Ben Machinist, a veteran who is participating in the weekend events. “It is not going to be the usual Veteran’s Day memorial observation. This is going to be a tribute to all veterans.” The dedication of the Veteran’s Tribute Tower will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 at Sullivan Square in New Town. The tower will be inscribed with the motto, “Honor the Past, Salute the Present, and Inspire the Future.”

The events actually begin on Thursday, Nov. 10, when Verdin Company traveling foundry will assemble and erect the Tribute Tower on its site on Discovery Park Boulevard. It will have four clocks and a 250-pound bell. The foundry will cast the bell on site. The Veteran’s Day ceremony will feature a presentation of colors, state government and local officials and guest speakers. Machinist said there will be seating for 200. Those who want to attend are encouraged to bring their own chairs to ensure they will have a place to sit. It will be held rain or shine. A Veteran’s Day Parade will be held beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 12 in New Town. The parade will be led by ROTC Cadets from Virginia colleges, followed by active duty units from service branches and veterans of past wars. The parade will also fea-

TRIBUTE TOWER FACTS • The tower will be 30 feet tall • The 3’ diameter clock dial will remind us to “Take Time To Remember” our veterans • The bell will weigh 250 pounds and be 24” in diameter • The bell will ring with the musical note "E" • The bell will be cast in Williamsburg VA using Verdin’s one-of-a-kind “Bell Foundry on Wheels.” Verdin’s “Bell Foundry on Wheels” is the only on-site casting process in the world. • The tower will contain an electronic carillon system that can be programmed to play chimes and patriotic/commemorative music daily or during special events. The events are headed up by Harry Walters, a local resident and president of Veterans Coalition Inc., with full support of the nine Combined Veterans Organizations of Williamsburg. Grecian Plate The goal of George and Roula Komianos is to make each customer who walks through the door of the Grecian Plate feel welcome and at home. The restaurant, now in its second year at WindsorMeade Marketplace, specializes in Greek and American favorites and old-fashioned customer service. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. “Everything is made homemade from scratch,” said George Komianos. “All our Greek food is authentic.” Roula Komianos spends hours each day preparing traditional Greek foods including moussaka, souvlaki and pastitsio. Pastries are a specialty including baklava, rice pudding and kataifi. The recipes she makes have been handed down through generations. “I like preparing the food and seeing the customers enjoy it,” she said. George prepares traditional American dishes which run the gamut from hamburgers and Delmonico steak to spaghetti and meatballs and pork chops. One customer, who was eating at the restaurant for the first time commented on the food and service. “This is the best Greek food I have tasted since I was a child,” she said. “It brings back a lot of wonderful memories. And from the moment that I sat down I was treated like family.”

That atmosphere is something that the Komianos’ work to cultivate. They strive for satisfaction among the customers and hope they will spread the word among their friends. “We want them to come back and bring their whole neighborhood,” George Komianos said. – Ann Efimetz

Buck Woodard Last month, Colonial Williamsburg presented another three-week installment of “So Far From Scioto,” a program which dramatizes the Native American presence in Williamsburg at the dawn of the American Revolution. Cultural anthropologist Buck Woodard, who works with Colonial Williamsburg, spent years planning and researching the project, readying the presentation for the public. It has garnered positive reactions from within the foundation and from visitors. Some people have made a special trip here to see it, lauding it as one of the best programs offered at Colonial Williamsburg. It will be offered again next spring. “So Far From Scioto” is part of CW’s American Indian Initiative, which according to a press release, “takes a broad-based approach to include the histories of Native peoples in 18th century Williamsburg.” To do so, the foundation looks to talents and resources of Native Americans and experts, including Woodard. “I came on as a consultant in 2008 involved in training, and to consult on how to organize a more robust American Indian presence in the Capital city,” Woodard said. “The first year was spent putting together the long range plan and doing outreach.” Woodard takes part in programming and interpreting characters when “the occasion calls for it.” The majority of his work is spent behind the scenes, developing relationships, conducting field work and research to assemble the talent Colonial Williamsburg needs to produce the programs successfully. The talent comes from across the country. Those working on the projects are considered experts in both technical and dramatic aspects. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, NOVEMBER 2011

“It is a lot of legwork to get to the actual production,” Woodard admitted. Teaching visitors about the lives of various Native Americans in Williamsburg is a goal of the foundation. Plans to expand and diversify programs will continue. “Native Americans had different experiences and we hope to tell those stories,” Woodard said. “It is enlightening for people.” Woodard readily admits that the most gratifying aspect of his job is teaching. He lectures at the College of William & Mary and teaches adjunctively at Virginia Commonwealth University. “I very much enjoy sharing knowledge, my research and experiences,” he said. “It is very satisfying.” – Ann Efimetz

Busch Gardens news

There is lots to celebrate at Busch Gardens. This month, the popular attraction, Christmas Town opens at the park and runs on selected evenings through the holiday season. Last month, the park announced that a new roller coaster, Verbolten, will open at Busch Gardens in 2012. The park recently opened Mach Tower, a new drop ride. Verbolten takes its name and its theme from a similar German word, “verboten,” which means banned. The coaster takes the place of the Big Bad

Wolf which was retired at the end of 2010. The ride will last more than 3 minutes and will experience a lurching, swerving ride through the Dark Forest at speeds up to 53 mph. The new ride uses technology known as a Linear Synchronous Motor which permits the 16passenger car to achieve high speed in a short distance. The same technology is used in coasters that top 100 mph. The coaster will join Apollo’s Chariot, Loch Ness Monster, Alpengeist and Griffon. Photo courtesy Busch Gardens in Williamsburg

Celebration of Thanksgiving Berkeley Plantation will hold the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival, Sunday Nov. 6 at the plantation in Charles City County. The annual event draws thousands to attend the celebration of the 1619 landing of the colonists. The day is dedicated to history, food and fun. The event includes tours of the 1726 walk in the autumn gardens, arts & crafts, children’s activities, tribal dancers and historical re-enactments. Exhibitors will include artisans and crafters of the 17th and 18th century including basket weaving, leather and woodworking and soap making. Entertainment will include singers, musicians and dancers. At press time, tentative plans for a Thanksgiving interfaith service at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24 at Colonial Williamsburg’s Play Booth Theater on Palace Green near the Governor’s Palace were underway. The event is sponsored by the Williamsburg Clergy Fellowship and lay leaders from several denominations are expected to participate. The service is designed for residents and visitors who wish to come together in giving thanks and has become a local tradition. Thanksgiving Day, which falls on Thursday, Nov. 24 is a day traditionally celebrated with staples of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, squash and cranberry sauce. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, NOVEMBER 2011

Later, President Franklin Roosevelt clarified that Thanksgiving should always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping. Black Friday occurs the day after the holiday. Oh, and don’t feel too guilty about your turkey dinner. The meat is a great source of iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and B vitamins. And that sleepy feeling you get after stuffing yourself with turkey? That’s from an amino acid, tryptophan, a natural sedative in turkey. There are three places in the United States named after the holiday’s traditional main course. Turkey, Texas, Turkey Creek, La. and Turkey, N.C. There are 28 places in the United States named Plymouth, as in Plymouth Rock, where the Pilgrims landed. There is one township in the U. S. named Pilgrim, in Dade County, Mo. And then there is Mayflower, Ark.

The day after Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday,” traditionally thought to be the busiest shopping day of the year, although many retailers report the Saturday before Christmas is when they make the most money. Black Friday is popular because most people have off from work and use the day to get a jump start on holiday shopping. It’s important to remember to try to buy local. Many of our area outlet and shopping areas have special hours, with some opening at midnight or in very early in the morning. Discriminating shoppers may get in line hours before the doors open to get bargains before they are gone. Many stores have special offers with very low prices on some goods, particularly on electronics and popular toys. Televisions, laptops, GPS systems, DVD and MP3 players, digital cameras and video games are all hot sellers on Black Friday. Online retailers also take advantage and offer great deals online. She began buying and giving out special teddy bears to children in hospitals awaiting surgery in her home state of Mississippi. She called them “Claire Bears” and has since given out hundreds of toys. “I remembered the many times I would go into the operating room and I would hold a stuffed animal as security,” Crawford said in a recent interview. “I couldn’t have my parents with me in the operating room, so that was security for me.” The bears are made with stitches on their mouths, a recognizable way for the child to cope with the cleft lip surgery. When Crawford went on a medical mission trip to the Philippines with Operation Smile a few years ago, she brought the bears with her to give to youngsters who were anxiously awaiting surgery. “I showed them my cleft lip scar, and also the bear,” she said. “I told them that their smile would be changed forever through the stitches they would get.” Crawford has remained active with Operation Smile, which is based in Norfolk. She is on the College Council and works to get the word out about the organization’s life-changing work. She has spoken to some 50 civic clubs and organizations, some locally, regarding her mission. On Oct. 29, Crawford and the Operation Smile club she began at the college, is presenting a 5K Run/Walk to raise money and awareness about the mission of the organization. HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. For more information on Colonial Williamsburg’s programs, visit our website at www.history.org

around town

Visit the chief If you ever have business at the James City-Williamsburg Courthouse, make sure to take note of the impressive statue of Chief Powhatan, located outside the building. Chief Powhatan was the supreme ruler of most of the indigenous tribes in the Chesapeake Bay area from north of the Mattaponi River to the lands south of the James River. He was the highest authority the colonists faced when dealing with the tribe. According to the Historic Jamestowne website: Captain John Smith wrote of Chief Powhatan: He is of parsonage a tall well proportioned man . . . his head somwhat gray. . . . His age neare 60; of a very able and hardybody to endure any labour. What he commandeth they dare not disobey in the least thing. It is strange to see with what great feare and adoration all these people doe obay this Powhatan. For at his feet, they present whatsoever he commandeth, and at the least frowne of his browe, their greatest spirits will tremble with feare: and no marvell, for he is very terrible and tyrannous in punishing such as offend him. Williamsburg Landing Some 500 people currently call Williamsburg Landing home. The continuing care community, located off Lake Powell Road, offers a residential environment which offers security and care at various stages of later life. “I think that just about everyone who moves here says, ‘Why didn’t I do this earlier?’” said Ben Puckett, the Landing’s executive vice president. “There are so many advantages.” Puckett said one of the biggest attractions of the community is the social network cultivated by residents. “It is a very active lifestyle,” Puckett said. “And the people who live here are fascinating. They have come from many places and have accomplished so many things in their lives. There are so many opportunities to be involved both inside and outside the community.” Activities include classes taught through the Christopher Wren Association, outings, trips and clubs. “There were even some residents who went skydiving recently,” he said.

Residents who require longterm care don’t need to leave the community. The Woodhaven complex houses the primary care clinic, assisted living apartments, skilled nursing center and memory-impaired suites. Having Woodhaven accessible takes the worry out of the future. “If you have to have care in Woodhaven for a short or a longterm situation, you are still part of the community,” Puckett said. “Friends come and visit you. It is different experience of healthcare in your later stages in life. That is part of the decision making of people who are thinking of a retirement community. They are looking ahead to the future.” Puckett said that being able to offer a continuum of care for residents is a major advantage for the Landing and residents who want to stay fit through their later years can take advantage of the health club and spa. “The facility is a jewel,” Puckett said. “It is part of the whole movement of what we see. People now look at their retirement age differently. They are interested in maintaining health, not just longevity.” – Ann Efimetz

Milestone for antiques show The annual Holiday Antique show will celebrate 30 years at the same place under the same management. It opens at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25 at the Kingsmill Marriott. This year’s show will feature 34 dealers from 13 states, the UK and Canada. Rex McNeil and Ben Reed, McNeil & Reed, retired

antique dealers, are returning to celebrate the 30th anniversary as a tribute to manager, Bettianne Sweeney. The antiques show is popular among residents and visitors. There’s an array of merchandise including estate jewelry and silver, small trinkets, oriental carpets, paintings, clocks and furniture both period and country. Since it is the beginning of the Christmas season, it is appropriate to think of holiday gift giving. Back by popular demand will be Gordon Converse of Gordon Converse Auctions and formerly of the Antiques Road Show. He will perform appraisals Saturday- Sunday by appointment. There will be a limit of three items at $10 per appraisal, with the money going to charity. Reservations can be made by calling 220-1299. For more information regarding the show, visit www.holidayantiqueshows.com

You don’t have to be a pilot to enjoy the great food at Charly’s Airport Restaurant. The local restaurant is open for lunch daily 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday and 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. The restaurant has become a favorite among locals and those who are flying through our area. It’s not uncommon to find pilots from up and down the east coast enjoying one of Charly’s specialities including fresh baked breads, soups, daily specials and homemade desserts. Charly’s has gained notoriety among pilots, voted by pilots on 100dollarhamburger.com, a subscription-based website with more than 54,000 readers as one of the best “fly-in restaurants.” The restaurant offers view from inside the building on the patio on nice days.

Make Room for the Memories.

An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two livinghistory museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Because the history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger!

Are you a local? There have been many changes in our area over the past couple of decades. You know you may be a local, or at least pass for one, when you can remember some landmarks or other aspects of life here that have gone by the wayside. You may be a local if you remember when the site of Staples on Richmond Road was Safeway grocery store. Of course, that was in the 1980s. Remember?

Healthy holidays Staying healthy during the holiday season is easier if you keep a few tips in mind. Get a flu shot. Our area has several locations which offer the shot including pharmacies, urgent care centers and doctor’s offices. Wash your hands, often. the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continually state that handwashing is one of the best ways to stay healthy at any time of year. Looking for a way to make that chore easier? There are several area stores that offer fun holiday scents in hand soaps. Buy a cute dispenser and put it by the sink to remember to wash up, especially after shaking hands and before eating. Eat right. During the holidays, it can be easy to over indulge. However, if you remember portion control, you can sample some of your favorite foods without gaining too much weight. It’s a good time of year to sign up for a health club. There are several choices locally. Health clubs generally report a rise in membership right after the holiday season, as people make New Year’s resolutions to get in shape. Get a good night’s sleep. Being rested helps boost immunity and improves mood and stamina. If you are having trouble sleeping you may consider a new mattress. There are many stores locally that specialize in providing the ideal mattress for the best night’s sleep.

around town

Helping others During the holiday season, area agencies including Salvation Army, Fish, Grove Christian Outreach Center, churches and other organizations help those in need. For the past eight years, Home Instead Senior Care offers a chance to buy gifts for area elderly who may otherwise not receive any gifts for Christmas. Trees for the “Be a Santa For a Senior” program go up at Walmart at the Nov.4 and will remain until Dec. 2. Suggestions for gifts are listed on tags and include clothing and toiletry items. Some 8,000 gifts are needed to fill the requests. A wrapping party will be held at noon, Dec. 8 at Quarterpath Recreational Center for those interested in getting the gifts ready for delivery to area facilities including Colonial Manor and Envoy. Those who want to help can bring scissors and a roll of wrapping paper. Salvation Army’s Angel Tree and Kettle program also begin in November. Trees go up at the Williamsburg Outlet Mall and Walmart. The age and wish list of children are included. There have been

hundreds of requests already, outpacing last year’s need. Fish, Grove Christian Outreach and other organizations that help those less fortunate also welcome donations of food and clothing. Grove is collecting items for its annual shoebox drive for kids. Needed are small items including books, school supplies, puzzles and games. – Ann Efimetz
