St. Martin’s Episcopal Church You will find the people of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church participating in various community outreach projects. Some are Stephen Ministers who visit others in need, some volunteer with Salvation Army and others with the Williamsburg Parent Cooperative Preschool. Putting faith into action is one of the church goals and church programs reflect that mission. “Believe it or not, St. Martin’s is not a clergy-centered church,” said church rector, the Rev. Shirley Smith Graham. “The people of St. Martin’s are the true treasurers here. They have generous hearts that feel best when they’re serving others. They work in their professions and volunteering to help others.” Smith Graham, who has been leading the congregation since July 2007, said that the dedication of the church members is an inspiration. “They are deeply empathetic to those who suffer, and they have great imaginations for what can be done to help people feel connected with God and each other,” she said. “My privilege, along with the rest of the staff, is that we get to serve alongside them.” Smith Graham moved to Williamsburg from Alexandria, where she had served at Historic Christ Church. She stepped into a ministry here that had been occupied for three decades by the Rev. Pickett Miles. She said his legacy is ever-present in the church and within the people. “Pickett’s legacy is a blessing to me every day,” she said. “The strengths he built into St. Martin’s are evident. I’ve told him many a time that St. Martin’s wouldn’t be thriving today if he hadn’t been insightful and faithful about establishing good preaching standards, the Bible studies, the healing ministry, the Memorial Garden and gotten the parish kicked off in building the parish hall and offices.” Smith Graham has taken her leadership role to heart and has enjoyed getting to know the people she shepherds and sharing her perspective on the challenges of daily living. “I want to be full of hope and have a personal touch, connecting with individuals and the congregation,” she said. “I hope I’m affirming of folks and challenging, both. My sermons are always based on our readings from the Bible, but truly I preach from peoWWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

ple’s lives, using my knowledge of what they’re dealing with to help them connect with God’s blessing for them.” Smith Graham believes in God’s omnipresence and it is her goal to help people realize the deep love He has for each one of His people. “My call is to help people be aware of God’s presence,” she said. “Because that presence conveys blessing, and we become changed by the love of God to be agents of grace and good in our community and our world.” ––Ann Efimetz

Hot pursuit Great Park Pursuit offers outdoor fun There are several area parks in James City County which offer fun for the entire family. “The Great Park Pursuit” sponsored by James City County Parks & Recreation was developed to help individuals and families take advantage of area parks. A summer program recently wrapped and a fall program begins this month. The department provides a checklist with highlights and features of each park. The area parks feature fishing, boating, biking, and other opportunities for outdoor activities. More –– To register for the Great Park Pursuit call 259-5352. Veda McMullen Chances are if you have called the Division of Parks & Recreation for James City County you have spoken with Veda McMullen. The kind voice on the other end of the phone belongs to McMullen who has been helping people for more than two decades. On a daily basis she helps people with a variety of questions regarding the county’s parks, programming and facilities. She’s the go-to person for finding what you need to know. She responds to public and staff requests for information, composes communications through media releases and develops promotional posters and fliers, which highlight various programs. And when she’s not doing that, she may be behind the camera at the county video center coordinating photography and video production for various clients. Her zeal for the job is apparent. “I love the opportunities to work directly with our citizens, to hear their comments on the county and on our services,” she said. “Because so much of my work is generally performed in an office setting, when I have the chance to work with citizens, their passion for community is always wonderful. I feel so proud to live in such a caring and compassionate community.” McMullen’s ease of dealing with people springs from her background in broadcast journalism. After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, she spent years in television news and broadcasting. When the job for the county came her way, she thought it would fit well with her expertise. “I knew it would be a wonderful opportunity to visit the print, publications, and graphics aspects of the business,” she said. “I’ve learned so much during my tenure so far.” McMullen said the county’s parks are a wonderful asset and provide families with inexpensive ways to have fun together. “It’s our goal is to encourage youth and families to get outside and play,” she said.

The renovated James City-Williamsburg Community Center will open this month. McMullen is anticipating renewed interest in the popular facility. The center will have new tiling, renovated locker rooms and a new pool pump and filtration system. There will be new membership options and a variety of new ways to use the upgraded facility. “We’re also looking at a variety of promotional options to welcome back existing patrons and to appeal to citizens who have never used our facilities,” she said.“I think the public will find us fun, affordable, convenient, and responsive to their needs.” ––Ann Efimetz

Shirley Plantation, settled in 1613, is the oldest plantation in Virginia and has been the home of the HillCarters for 11 generations. Shirley has descended to each heir with family portraits, silver and furniture. An architectural treasure is the famous staircase that rises for three stories with no visible means of support. Westover Plantation is America’s premier example of Georgian architecture. It was built in 1730 by William Byrd II, diarist, colonial leader and founder of Richmond. SURRY COUNTY Events of history come alive after your free ferry ride across the James River from Jamestown to Scotland Wharf. Bacon’s Castle, operated by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, was built in 1665. It is the oldest brick dwelling in Virginia. ABBY ALDRICH ROCKEFELLER FOLK ART MUSEUM The award-winning Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum—the oldest institution in the United States dedicated solely to the collection and preservation of American folk art—reopened in February 2007 in new quarters adjacent to the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. Exhibits feature paintings, whirligigs, weather vanes, carvings, toys, embroideries and other folk works representing many diverse cultural traditions and geographic regions. John D. Rockefeller Jr. established the museum in 1957 in honor of his wife, Abby, and her love of folk art. Mrs. Rockefeller gave the core collection of 424 objects to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1939. Today the collection of thousands of objects includes items dating from the 1720s to the present shown in 11 galleries constituting 11,000 square feet of exhibition space. The

BASSETT HALL Bassett Hall, a two-story, 18th-century frame house on 585 acres (including woodlands) near the colonial Capitol building, was the Williamsburg home of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Jr. In addition to the main house, the property includes a teahouse and three original outbuildings—a smokehouse, kitchen and dairy–all of which were bequeathed to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1979 by the Rockefeller family. The house reopened to the public in December 2002 following an extensive renovation that was funded by a generous gift of $2.7 million from Abby O’Neill, granddaughter of John D. Rockefeller Jr., and her husband George. As a result of the renovation, both the interiors and the grounds are much as they were when the Rockefellers lived there during the mid 1930s and 1940s to oversee the restoration of the Historic Area. Of particular note is Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s eclectic collection of 125 pieces of folk art, including weather vanes, chalkware and American pottery—pieces that Mrs. Rockefeller was among the first in the nation to collect. DeWitt Wallace & Abby Aldrich Folk Art Have you been to the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum? It was opened in 1985, and is has an extensive collection of American and British antiques. There is a lot to see. There’s furniture, metals, ceramics, glass, paintings, prints, firearms,and textiles from the 17-19th centuries. Colonial Williamsburg also hosts various performances and programs at the Hennage Auditorium, which is part of the museum. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, SEPTEMBER 2009

When you enter upstairs, you can take a tour of the Public Hospital of 1773. The three-part exhibit features history on mental illness and treatment methods. In the same building is the Abby Aldrich Decorative Arts Museum. The museum moved to this location a few years ago and features a variety of colorful changing and permanent exhibits. Colonial „ CW celebrates the 30th anniversary of African American programs 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of Colonial Williamsburg’s African American programs. In 1979 Colonial Williamsburg introduced pioneering new programs to interpret the lives of the more than 50 percent of the town’s population who were free and enslaved African Americans at the time of the American Revolution. To celebrate 30 years of dedication to telling this story, a variety of special events and programs are being planned for 2009. As in past years, the lives of enslaved Virginians are detailed in several programs offered at Great Hopes Plantation, the Peyton Randolph House and during Revolutionary City. At Great Hopes Plantation guests watch the re-creation and evolution of an 18th-century plantation, learn about enslaved African Virginians and their masters, and learn how they lived and worked on a typical middle-sized rural Virginia farm. While Great Hopes focuses on the rural life, the Peyton Randolph House site in the middle of Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area presents the life of The evening program explores the diverse African Americans in the 18th-century capital of Virginia. The site introduces nature of African American musical culture in guests to the daily work, family relationships and attitudes toward the colonial Virginia. American Revolution of the enslaved community. At the entrance to the site, orientation interpreters distribute cards identifying 23 slaves. Guests use them to learn about enslaved residents of the house, like Johnny, Peyton Randolph’s manservant, who struggles with the question of staying on property or joining other enslaved people fighting with the British for their freedom. In Revolutionary City visitors can gain insight into the perspectives of residents such as Baptist preacher Gowan Pamphlet and Eve, an enslaved servant at the Randolph house. Here are sites we recommend you see: Governor’s Palace (Allow an hour) The residence of seven royal governors and the first two elected governors of the new sovereign state of Virginia, the Palace is shown today as the home of Lord Dunmore, the last British governor of the colony, on the eve of the Revolution. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Blacksmith (Allow 30 minutes) During the Revolution, James Anderson’s shop repaired arms for the American forces. Colonial „ This Month… CW’s Revolutionary City enters fall season The fourth season of Colonial Williamsburg's highly acclaimed Revolutionary City® programs returns to its autumn schedule beginning Monday, Aug. 31. The two-hour, outdoor dramatic presentation of interactive stories and events begins at 3 p.m. each day in the easternmost block of Duke of Gloucester Street nearest the Capitol. Ticketed guests are invited to follow their Revolutionary-era counterpart’s transition from subjects to citizens and make connections between those Revolutionary changes and issues facing citizens today. The seasonal change also shifts presentation times for programs that complement the Revolutionary City experience, including “Revolution in the Streets.” “All Cause of Danger,” the companion drama to “Collapse of Royal Government, 17741776,” is presented on the Courthouse steps at noon Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. “Blessings of Liberty,” a prelude to “Citizens at War, 1776-1781,” explores the tensions created by revolutionary fervor at noon Wednesdays and Fridays at the Courthouse of 1770. These scenes from “All Cause of Danger” and “Blessings of Liberty” will begin on Sept. 22. Revolutionary City At Night provides evening enhancements to the guest experience. Revolutionary City programs are designed to provide timeless parallels between the lives of modern Americans and corresponding 18th-century events and issues. The Revolutionary City experience portrays the years 1774-1781 when the townspeople of Williamsburg progressed from subjects to citizens amidst momentous, world-changing events. America’s Music Series takes audiences on an audio journey There are some musical styles and instruments, like the banjo, bluegrass and gospel, that are thought of as essential features of American folk music. This fall, a wide variety of performers will showcase the history of our music during America’s Music Series at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. Whoop & Holler: The Evolution of the Banjo will chronicle the history of this lively instrument from its origins as a slave instrument fashioned out of gourds, to its current standing as a core feature of bluegrass and American

country music. See Carson Hudson perform on Sept. 1 and Oct. 6. Kelly Kennedy will perform Irish Influences in Song and Dance on Sept. 8. A noted vocalist, instrumentalist, actor, folk artist and dancer, Kennedy has been performing at Colonial Williamsburg since 1995. Dean Shostak began his career at the age of 14 performing on string instruments, including the violin, the fiddle and the hurdy-gurdy. On Sept. 15 and Oct. 20, he shows this dimension of his musical talent with the program Fiddleworks: Influences from Around the World. Listen as he returns to his own musical roots and introduces audiences to the fiddle’s origins in America. Many genres are influenced by traditional song and dance from different countries within the United Kingdom. John Turner’s program takes audiences to Great Britain to explore The Influence of Scottish Fiddle Music. Turner, a 10-time winner of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddling Championship, will perform Sept. 22 and Oct. 13. Timothy Seaman examines the extensive history and versatile nature of the instrument in Hammered Dulcimers and Other Instruments. Seaman uses his music to take listeners to different historical periods and geographical regions. His program features the hammered dulcimer, a large collection of flutes and whistles, psalteries (a stringed instrument related to the harp), mountain dulcimer and percussion. Stoneware exhibition A new exhibition at Colonial Williamsburg’s DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum explores the rich history of stoneware in Britain’s American colonies and the new nation from the first English settlements through 1800. “Pottery With a Past: Stoneware in Early America” presents a wide array of drinking, dining and storage vessels—in ceramic forms ranging from utilitarian jugs to exquisite decorative teapots—made in England, Germany and early America. The exhibition includes more than 300 intact objects These two jugs, dated “1724,” were produced in the Westerwald region of Germany specifically for the and archaeological English and English colonial market. Fall family fun Riverfront beaches, Farmers Market You can still get some summer fun in during the last days of the season. The James and York Rivers are wonderful places for families to enjoy. There are various beach areas along the Colonial Parkway where you can park and enjoy the water. It’s especially nice in the evening after the hot sun has gone down some. Families can swim, walk, play Frisbee or other games along the river fronts. The rivers are great place for kids to wade and collect shells along the beachfront. People love to bring their dogs to the waterfront to let them swim. It’s free, in our backyard and provides for a great time out. And don’t forget the Williamsburg Farmers Market.

Consort concert Williamsburg Consort caps with musical extravaganza

September means its time for the Williamsburg Consort’s annual musical extravaganza. The Williamsburg Consort, which is the only adult symphonic band festival in the state, was chartered in 2002. More than 100 musicians will converge on the area to attend workshops, practice together and host an spirited concert. Musicians travel from as far away as Maine and Florida to be part of the ensemble. Here are some highlights of the event: 2002 - A joint concert with the Air Force Heritage of America Band and a Swing Band and Sectional Concert. 2003- Williamsburg Consort 2003 had 80 musicians, 2004 had 90 and 2005 had 97. 2006 - was led by Colonel

Arnald Gabriel with 105 musicians. 2007 - 105 musicians led by Colonel L. Bryan Shelburne. 2008 - Lt. Colonel Larry Lang conducted 105 musicians in 2008 and Adam Frey was the guest euphonium soloist. This year, the Williamsburg Consort Conductor will again be Col. L. Bryan Shelburne, retired leader and commander of the United States Army Band. Guest soloists will be Ken and Harry Watters (The Watters Brothers.) Guest vocal soloist will be Maggie Worsdale. Sally Craig has singlehandedly commandeered the consort for the past eight years. Each year she welcomes back several musicians who have been attending each year, and several more who have been attending for more than five years. The capping concert will be held at Warhill High at 7 p.m., Sept. 17. The

About 30 minutes away down Interstate 64 is the Virginia Living Museum. The museum is located on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and offers both indoor and outdoor exhibits which highlight the natural beauty and environment of our state. The museum is popular with people of all ages.The 62,000-square-foot exhibition building opened, which features expansive exhibits which incorporate wildlife ranging from the mountains to the Chesapeake Bay. Changing exhibits feature a variety of subjects and offer educational opportunities for everyone. The museum is especially fun for kids, who have visited the facility in throngs. Some 2 million school-age kids have visited the museum since its inception in 1987. Teachers, parents and caregivers appreciate the museum’s mission to educate and raise awareness about the natural world. AROUND TOWN

Signs point to history If you take a ride down the Colonial Parkway, you can get a glimpse into the history of the area.

The marker states that the first African Americans in British Colonial America, likely landed around 1619, possible at Jamestown.

You will find several markers along the road from Jametown to Yorktown recounting information regarding the area. One marker is located recounts the story of the earliest African American national radio and TV minister the Elder Lightfoot Solomon Michaux. He purchased the land surrounding the marker in 1936 with a dream to establish a farm and national memorial to the progress of African Americans in the country. The dream became reality, as the Gospel Spreading Farm is located just down the parkway from the sign.

THIS MONTH’S EVENTS Sept. 3: “Benjamin Franklin: The 1783 Peace Treaty and Hot Air Ballooning.” Local historian and author Tony Williams takes history up, up and away with this 5:30 p.m. lecture at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. On Sept. 3, 1783, American diplomat Benjamin Franklin, who led negotiations for a peace settlement with Great Britain to end the Revolutionary War, signed the treaty. Also known for his accomplishments in science, Franklin had the opportunity to witness the first hot air balloon flights in history. Cost: Colonial Williamsburg Admission Ticket. 800-HIS-TORY.

Through Sept. 20: “A Child’s-Eye View.” This exhibition features dollhouses that range from a four-room Philadelphia early 19th-century row house to a 12-footlong, multi-room house from around 1900. Also on view will be selections from the toy train collection of the Carstens, which is a recent gift to the museum. Dolls, building blocks, animals and more round out the exhibition. Shrimp Feast celebrates 30 years The Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg will hold the biggest and best Shrimp Feast ever to celebrate its 30th anniversary. “Shrimp Feast XXX” will be held 4-7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Jamestown 4-H Center. Hope for good weather, because the event will be held rain or shine. Tickets are $25 for adults and and $12 for kids 6-12. The Shrimp Feast has become Williamsburg's signature late summer family event. Over the past 29 years, it has become a place to see and be seen, a great gathering of community, entertainment and fun. All you can eat fare includes, shrimp, of course, hot dogs, baked beans, rolls, cole slaw, hush puppies, beer and soft drinks. The shrimp will be cooked to perfection and served ready to peel and eat. The club has recently purchased new cookers to expediate the preparation of the shrimp. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Kiwanis emergency children’s center at the Children’s Hospital of the King's Daughters. That’s keeping with the club’s dedication to the community.
