Accent on service at Seafare Seafare Restaurant on Richmond Road has been in business for 36 years. It has maintained a standard of excellence which has resulted in accolades. The Saras family restaurant recently received the 2012 Distinguished Restaurants of North America Award. The distinction signiﬁes the restaurant as having a commitment to quality. Fewer than 800 restaurants have earned the award. To qualify, a restaurant must meet or exceed standards and pass a rigorous and anonymous thirdparty inspection that evaluates ambience, cuisine, service and check accuracy. According to Demitrios Saras, the restaurant’s success is attributable to the consistent service and delicious menu selections which keeps people coming back. “We are big on excellent service, high quality food and believe that the customer comes ﬁrst,” Saras said. “We believe this is the art form of what restaurants should be like. We try to keep to our roots, knowing what people want and providing it to them.” Some of the restaurant’s specialities include high quality seafood, beef and crab cakes. “They (crab cakes) are probably the restaurant favorite,” Saras said.

Seafare also has an extensive wine list featuring a variety of selections to complement the menu. The majority of Seafare’s customers are local residents who frequent the restaurant. “Many of our customers have been with us many years,” he said. “A lot of our business comes from word-of-mouth.” The ambiance of the restaurant is “formal atmosphere with casual attire.” “We provide the same experience to each of our guests whether paying $18 or $100,” he said. “We like to pamper our guests.” The family will continue to focus on the aspects of the restaurant that keep customers returning. “We will keep doing what we are doing,” Saras said. “The most frequent comment we get is, ‘This has been the best dining experience, and it the way restaurants should be.’ Our goal is to keep hearing that. The sun will come out at the Kimball Andrea McArdle, original “Annie” to perform Dec.16 The actress who delighted Broadway audiences as the original “Annie” in 1977, will appear at the Kimball Theatre for two performances of her new cabaret show this month. ShowStoppers Productions is presenting Andrea McArdle, legendary for her amazing voice. Performances are scheduled for 2 and 7:30 p.m. Ticket sales have been brisk. Speaking from her home in n New York, McArdle recently shared her excitementt about returning to Williamsburg. urg. Local audiences are in for a treat as McArdle will sing a variety of Broadway and popu-lar tunes from the 1970s. She handpicked the pieces, which showcase her rich voice. “I decided to do somethingg all Seventies,” explained McArdle, rdle, who is now 48. “That’s the time when I came up, that was my influence.” The show opened to critical acclaim. The Times Square Chronicles wrote, “...the evening was truly a celebration of Broadway. Throughout the evening, McArdle’s powerful alto voice never flagged, nor did the singer’s energy. McArdle has the confidence that comes from growing up on the stage.” The numbers she will perform run the gamut from disco to show tunes. Audiences will hear selections from musicals including “A Chorus Line” and “Oliver!” “And of course we always do ‘Tomorrow,’” she added. Because of its proximity to Christmas, McArdle 8

will sing a variety of her favorite holiday songs, drawing from her extensive repertoire. Here comes 2013 First Night Williamsburg began in 1992 when Mr. and Mrs. Jim McCord of Williamsburg were visiting relatives out of town during the holidays. The McCords returned home and started talking about it with friends. The local franchise was bought and the first board met in May of 1993. The budget for the first year was $4,000 and attendance was surprisingly good. Through the years, the attendance has fluctuated, with 6,000 the average. First Night will celebrate 20 years this New Year’s Eve with festivities beginning at 6 p.m., Monday, Dec. 31. The main focus of the event is family entertainment. Live performances are held on several stages including the College of William & Mary and area churches. Over the years a broad partnership has formed and the City of Williamsburg offers the Kimball

Theatre and the Williamsburg Community Building. The event has grown to the Williamsburg Regional Library and Bruton Parish Hall. Colonial Williamsburg also participates, providing signage and the Visitors Center for admission button sales. James City County and York County send volunteers and provide other services for the event. More than 20 local merchants sell buttons, and annual awards are given for the top five sales sites. Over 400 volunteers are required to successfully staff the event which includes food, music and a grand fireworks finale at midnight in Zable Stadium. New to the program this year include “Applause Unlimited” and “Thirst ‘n Howl” at the children’s show held at 3-7 p.m. at Matthew Whaley Elementary. The Grand Illumination at Colonial Williamsburg is one of the biggest events of the year for our community. This year’s event is scheduled Sunday, Dec. 2 in the Historic Area. The celebration begins with a variety of entertainment on multiple outdoor stages throughout the Historic Area. Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums provide 18th-century music appropriate to the season. Other performers present holiday entertainment. The tradition of Grand Illumination originated in 1934 with a “White Lighting.” The ﬁrst “authentic” re-creation of an 18th-century Christmas in Williamsburg featured single candles in the windows of the Historic Area’s restored and reconstructed buildings, as well as garlands and greens on the outside of the buildings. Here are some other fun ways to usher in the holiday season. • The annual Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance Christmas Parade at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1. Christmas at Jamestown and Yorktown “A Colonial Christmas” offers a glimpse of 17th- and 18th-century holiday traditions with special tours and interpretive programs. Jamestown Settlement “A Jamestown Christmas” holiday film and special interpretive programs compare and contrast English Christmas customs of the period with how the season may have been observed in the difficult early years of America’s first permanent English colony. In England, the holiday season (Dec. 25-Jan. 6) was a time of merriment and feasting. Little is known about Christmases at Jamestown, but it is likely there were few celebrations other than church services to mark the holiday. Christmas-themed tours, available at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. December 1-21 with advance reservations, guide visitors through the museum’s outdoor interpretive areas. Participants can learn about the English colonist’s Christmas at sea in December 1606, and the Powhatan Indian hospitality shown to Captain John Smith’s trading party in 1608 during a winter storm. In the 1610-14 re-created fort, visitors can see wattle-and-daub buildings decorated with greenery. Visits to the fort also feature periodic encounters by the Lord of Misrule, an English tradition in which “grand captain of all mischief” and his followers progressed through town with riddles and revelry during the Christmas holiday. Yorktown Victory Center Hear accounts of Christmas and

winter in military encampments during the American Revolution and glimpse holiday preparations on a 1780s farm. Visitors to the Continental Army encampment can learn about winter camp life and hear accounts of Christmas during the war, as well as assist the quartermaster in preparing military supplies and, at 11:05 a.m. and 3:05 p.m. daily, observe artillery demonstrations. At the clapboard farmhouse adorned with greenery, historical interpreters compare and contrast 18th-century holiday traditions with those of modern times and demonstrate a variety of holiday activities, including setting a farmhouse table for a holiday feast. All aboard for the depot The Norge Depot will have a grand opening this month. The depot was moved six years ago from Peach Street to the James City County Library after CSX threatened to demolish it. The county and Norge residents secured almost $1 million in grants to move and restore the depot in phases. Carpet covers the original ﬂooring in a new meeting room. The original working freight doors still slide across the building, but now they work as shades for large glass windows and modern doors. The original lumber lines the rooms and both exterior and interior paints were matched by expert historians to be true to the original. The building will feature exhibits from area families with ties to the depot and Norge. The freight

room has become a meeting room. The rail express room has been reworked as the foyer and perhaps a small gift shop. The black waiting room, agent operating room and white waiting rooms are all museum space. Outside, a set of rails as they were on Peach Street spans the front of the museum. The museum highlights the signiﬁcance of the depot, railroad history, the Norwegian settlers and the economic development of the Norge community in the early 20th century. Organizers plan to open it initially on weekends with volunteer staff, before expanding. The Norge Depot is a onestory, timber frame structure built during 1906-08 and is the only surviving example

in the country of a classic C&O depot. The architecture reflects the trend railroad companies used to create standardized designs that could be mass produced, yet customized to the specific location. One customization is the the bay window. Based on the architectural significance and the former role in the Norge community, the depot is listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.

Christmas in lights The tree-lighting in Market Square of Colonial Williamsburg has become a local tradition. Thousands of bright white lights are carefully strung on the evergreen located at Market Square on Duke of Gloucester Street. Each year since 1917, people have gathered on Christmas Eve to usher in Christmas by watching the tree become illuminated for the season. It is truly a sight to behold. The ﬁring of the Christmas guns takes place 5-5:25 p.m., and the tree is lit at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24.

According to Colonial Williamsburg, the ﬁrst Christmas tree recorded in Williamsburg was at the St. George Tucker House in 1842. In 1915, a small notice in the town newspaper spread the word, “When the bells begin to ring all of Williamsburg will assemble on Palace Green to sing carols and hear the exercises that have been prepared for the community Christmas tree.” The invention of electric lights had made it possible for the outdoor ceremony. 1917 is the ﬁrst tree lighting ceremony that was held on Palace Green, in 1937 it was moved to Market Square Green and Colonial Williamsburg took over. Depending on weather 5003,000 people attend the annual tradition. Some 2,000 candles are handed out to attendees to be lit when the evergreen lights are turned on. The tree remains lit for several weeks after Christmas.

Colonial Williamsburg celebrates this special day in the Revolutionary City with musical performances on multiple stages and fireworks displays from three different locations. In the 18th century, illuminations included the firing of guns and lighting of fireworks to celebrate major events, such as great military victories, the anniversary of the reigning sovereign's birth, or the arrival of a new colonial governor. • The Christmas Decorations Walking Tour provides a guided look at decorated exteriors and streets. Guests learn about the materials, construction techniques and holiday traditions of Colonial Williamsburg’s decorations. Tours are offered at 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 1:30 and 3:15 p.m. daily from Nov. 25-Dec. 30 except on Dec. 3, 4 and 25. A separate $5 ticket is required in addition to a Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket. • “Holiday Decorating Techniques and Secrets,” at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 3, 5, 7, 11 and 13 at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. Guests learn the techniques used to make and decorate wreaths, swages, centerpieces and other traditional Williamsburg decorations using fresh fruits, greens and other natural materials. Natural Christmas Colonial Williamsburg has bedecked some 100 sites through the Historic Area with unique natural decorations. A corps of about a dozen designers have prepared the lovely pieces which are maintained throughout the holiday season. People visit Colonial Williamsburg expressly to see the distinctive decorations. You may see dried fruits or vegetables, feathers, cotton, seed pods, Magnolia leaves, corn cobs, sunﬂowers, seashells and a variety of other natural elements decorating doors and banisters throughout the Historic Area. The range of material is expansive, with the only stipulation that the material used must have been present in colonial times. Some of plant items found on the wreaths and swatches still grow in gardens across town. Each designer works on creat-

ing decorations for up to a dozen buildings. The choices for the decorations are left up to each designer. Usually choices are dictated on the type of building, it’s style and its color. In addition to the decorations, there are miles of pine roping which extends throughout the Historic Area. It is changed a few times over the course of the season, depending on the weather. Wreaths are also maintained and elements replaced dependent on wear. Colonial Williamsburg offers walking tours that to allow guests the chance to see the decorations up close and to ask questions. Participants can learn about the materials, construction techniques, and traditions of Colonial Williamsburg decorations. Victorious Images Victorious Images in Lightfoot is a destination shop for those who need post-surgical products. Nancy Lewis, who owns the shop, had the idea to open the store to offer locals products that had only been available outside the area.

“I wanted to ﬁll the need for post-surgical products,” Lewis said recently. “I decided to do something about it.” She has set up the store to be as comfortable as possible. Many of her clients are those who have undergone mastectomies or other cancer surgeries.

“I try to treat them like I would my mother or my sister,” Lewis said. “If someone is haveing a bad day, they can come in, have a cup of coffee and relax. Sometimes just having a change in the atmosphere can make a difference in your day.” The products she carries includes carries breast prothesis, mastectomy attire, compression garments for men and women, post-surgery camisoles and custom, waterproof bandages for PICC lines, casts and ostomy. “I also have information on available cancer resources,” Lewis said. Lewis said her business has picked up through word-ofmouth. Customers and area doctors have spread the word about the service she provides. “People come in and say, ‘This so great, I didn’t know you were here,” Lewis said. Lewis also carries a full line of skin care products to help those who are in treatment. “It helps people who are having skin changes during chemo and radiation,” she explained. “And I have a have scarves and hats for women going through chemo or who have other medical conditions.” Lewis said her business is an extension of her desire to want to help others. “It is not about sales, it is about connecting with them and for them to feel as though they have someone to talk to if they need it,” Lewis said. “My family used to call me ‘Nancy Nightingale.’ It just makes me feel good to be able to help somebody.” –Ann Eﬁmetz
