Book urges visit to Colonial Williamsburg Do you have a bucket list? You know, a list of things you would like to do before you kick the, well you know. Patricia Schultz who wrote the New York Times bestselling book, “1,000 Places to See before You Die – A Traveler’s Life List,” has named Colonial Williamsburg to its updated second edition. In a press release from Colonial Williamsburg, Schultz calls Colonial Williamsburg “a treat for both adults and kids” and calls the level of detail in the meticulous re-creation of the colonial period “astonishing.” The listing refers to the country’s largest, most popular living history museum as “one of the finest” and specifically mentions the Fifes and Drums, the 8

Williamsburg Inn and Colonial Houses-Historic Lodging, the taverns, the Spa of Colonial Williamsburg and the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. The book also mentions the Colonial Parkway, describing it as “a winding wooded road that connects Williamsburg with the other two locales that make up Virginia’s Historic Triangle: Jamestown, founded in 1607 and the original capital of colonial Virginia, and Yorktown, one of the colony’s major ports in the 18th century and site of the last battle of the American Revolution.” And just to think, it is all right here in our own backyard. – Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2012

Rev. Christopher Epperson The new rector of Bruton Parish The Rev. Christopher Epperson has fit seamlessly into the job as rector of Bruton Parish Church. Epperson, who takes the place of the Rev. Herman “Holly” Hollerith, who is now a Bishop of Southern Virginia, has a wealth of past experience which has helped him in his new role. He sat recently for an interview to answer some questions. When did you arrive in Williamsburg? May 13th was my first Sunday at Bruton Parish. I had previously served at St. Columba Chapel in Middleton, RI. Prior to that I had pastored a large church in Atlanta, Ga.

What about the future? In 2015, we will celebrate the 300th anniversary of the building. In a historic place you have a marvelous sense of being grounded yet forward looking which is both fun and rare. There is an element of being open to what God calls us to do as people and in our parish and in a broader community. I think we are always as people of faith believe that God continues to listen to us and we discern his will for his people and the world and how we can best answer the call faithfully. – Ann Efimetz

What has your experience been like so far? It has been fantastic. It is a warm, welcoming parish and everyone has gone out of their way to be welcoming and supportive. As an example, when we moved here, my wife Laura was 8 months pregnant with our third child. The people couldn’t have been more supportive and caring. What about parish life? It is a really fun place. It is a real beehive of activity. I am focused on meeting the needs of individuals in the parish from young to senior. There is a real sense of caring for everyone along the spectrum and that is very exciting. Do you have specific goals you would like to accomplish in your ministry? When you arrive at a parish you take time to know the people and the place. You have a vision of ministry as a priest of the church, but you need to take time to get to know the community and the rhythms of life in the community. What do you see as the role of the church in people’s lives? In this marvelous, historic place we are seeking ways to stay engaged with people who long for meaning, purpose and substance in life. The Gospel offers that and we need to articulate that in ways the changing world understands and sees as significant. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2012

There is a gem closeby. An Interpretive Center recently opened in Freedom Park, located off Centerville Road. The new facility features exhibits of artifacts recovered during the construction of the park itself and displayed in a lovely case with educational material regarding each piece. The center also offers an interactive kiosk which offers a visual tour of the park, its amenities and the wildlife you may encounter during a visit or hike on one of the park trails. There is a spacious meeting place within the facility with a working fireplace. There is an adjoining kitchen and outdoor patio area with picnic tables. The space is available for rent and could offer an ideal location for individuals, businesses or organizations to hold special functions. There’s also an outdoor bike wash station, accessible parking and a variety of environmentally green features.

Get ready for spring Have you ever heard the song, “In the Bleak Midwinter?” True, it’s theoretically a Christmas song, but the words during the dark days of January still ring true. “In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago.” So how to shake those midwinter blues? Think spring. Most importantly, spring flowers. This is National 16

Mail Order Gardening Month. This is the ideal time to shake the winter blues and start planning for the first colors of spring. You can visit one of our local garden centers or you can go online to decide what plants and flowers you may want in your spring garden. According the Old Farmer’s Almanac, Spring begins at 1:14 a.m., March 20. Get planning! – Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2012

First Night 2012 First Night is Dec. 31. The annual, alcohol-free event is celebrating its 19th year. The festivities are planned beginning around 5 p.m. Every year thousands converge here to experience a variety of family entertainment, food and a grand fireworks display at midnight. Admission to the event is with a button, which will be on sale at 20 locations throughout greater Williamsburg. Buttons are $15, kids 5 and under are free. Sales are limited to 6,000 buttons. A special kids show at Matthew Whaley Elementary begins at 3 p.m. New to the show this year are Betsy Q and the Children’s Theatre of Hampton Roads. Fireworks cap the kids event at 7 p.m., behind the school. Main stage performances begin at 6 p.m. All the venues are indoors, mitigating problems with the 20

weather. Performances run the gamut from musicians to speciality acts. New this year is the Main Event Shag Band which will offer entertainment for those who like to dance. A rock concert will be held 8-11 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Building on N. Boundary Street, which has become popular with younger audiences. Free buses will run the area from 5 p.m.- 12:30 a.m. People with a button can ride the bus for free. Food vendors will have food and drinks available for sale throughout the evening. The grand finale begins at 11:30 p.m. at Zable Stadium at The College of William & Mary. Fireworks go off at midnight. Plan what you want to see using the First Night map and schedule. Try to find at least one alternative event because sometimes shows fill up fast. For more information, visit www.firstnightwilliamsburg.org.

The most beautiful you When you walk in the door of Salon New York, you know you are in a very different place. The salon is tucked away in the Williamsburg Business Center on Longhill Road and may not seem like the typical place for a full service salon. But for the past 8 years, Dennis and Debby Minnella have been putting their expertise to work, making each client look and feel their very best. “I love creating,” Debby Minnella said recently. “That is my favorite thing, to make people look good and feel good.” “And she is wonderful at that,” agreed client Phyllis Rickard. “Debby is so upbeat and is a joy to have cut your hair. I look forward to coming here, it is like a mini vacation.” The salon offers a full gamut of services ranging from the standard wash, cut and blow dry to dimensional hair color and perms. Clients can also opt for a unique up-do, straightening or corrective color. The emphasis is on client satisfaction. Myrna Frankle has been coming to the salon for the past five years. She said she enjoys the individual attention she receives. “You get personalized attenWILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2012

Winter series of festival this month This month the 11th season of the Virginia Peninsula Jewish Film Festival continues at the Kimball Theatre. At the end of the month, “Ahead of Time” will be shown. The movie is scheduled Jan. 28-29. According the Internet Movie Data Base, the movie is a documentary on the life of Ruth Gruber, who became the world’s youngest PhD at age 20. “...At age 24, she became a New York Herald Tribune reporter and photographer and the same year was the first journalist to enter the Soviet Arctic. A trusted member of the Roosevelt Administration during WWII, she was given a dangerous secret mission. A feminist before feminism, Gruber was never just an observer, she was a participant in the making of history. She covered the turbulent Middle East throughout the 1940's, and the film

combines verite footage of her traveling back to Israel, with interviews and archival material.” The film festival is sponsored by Temple Beth El and has brought award-winning films to the area for more than a decade. The films offered as part of the festival this year are a bit different than the ones usually presented. The 10-person committee took

special care when selecting films, to pick ones that may interest people beyond the Jewish community. The movies chosen this year are also relatively new, with none older than 2009. The hope is the films will appeal to a broad audience. More – www.kimballtheatre.com – Ann Efimetz

Working toward a better you Making a New Year’s Resolution? You aren’t alone. According to research, 40-45% of American adults make one or more resolutions each year. However, sticking to the resolutions is a bit trickier. A lot of people who make New Year’s Resolutions do break them, but research shows that making resolutions is useful. People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions. So promise away. According to USA.gov, here are the most popular New Year’s Resolutions that are popular year after year. Drink less Get a better education Get a better job Get fit Lose weight Manage debt Manage stress Quit smoking Reduce, reuse and recycle Save money Take a trip Volunteer to help others Locally there are places that can help people who make these resolutions stick to them. There are several health clubs to help people get in shape and offer various memberships.

The Williamsburg James City County Community Center offers residents memberships at reasonable rates for the entire family. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center regularly offers classes to help people kick the habit. There is also online help available to help people quit. Volunteering abounds in our area and there are several opportunities. Churchs, clubs, individuals and civic groups regularly pitch in to help those in our area who may need some extra help. A haven for pets The mission statement at Noah’s Art Veterinary Hospital is simple. “We will never be the reason a pet does not receive the best possible care.” The facility, located on Richmond Road in Norge seeks to provide animals the best possible medical care, surgical care and dental care. The staff is committed to promoting responsible pet ownership, preventative health care and health-related educational opportunities for clients. Dr. Dale Sprenkel started Noah’s Ark in 1983. The practice has grown a lot since then, adding more staff, opening a new facility and offering more and expanded services and boarding. Noah’s Ark is an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association. Since 1993,

the facility has regularly undergone evaluations by AAHA to ensure that it complies with the association’s high quality standards of care. The standards cover nearly every aspect of the hospital, including surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, exam facilities, pet health records, cleanliness, emergency services, dental and nursing care, diagnostic imaging, and anesthesiology. Approximately 15% of animal hospitals in North America are accredited by AAHA. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday, (closed every Monday 2:30-3:40 p.m.) for a staff meeting; 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 7:30 a.m.-noon Saturday. The Red Cross needs you January is National Blood Donor Month Blood donations are notoriously scant during the winter months. That’s why the American Red Cross has named January as National Blood Donor Month to encourage people to roll up their sleeves and give the gift of life. According the Red Cross, January is the month that presents the most challenges in recruiting people to give blood. The reasons why vary. The weather can be unpredictable, more people have colds, flu or other sickness, colleges may not be in full session and people can just be tired after the holiday season. However, the need for blood doesn’t dip during winter. The local Red Cross needs about hundreds of blood donors every day to meet the needs of patients in our region. All donors are needed, but people with O blood types are especially sought. Locally, there are various blood drives that will be held to encourage people to donate. Jan. 5 Printpack, Inc., 400 Packets Ct. 7 a.m. - noon. Jan. 6 Chambrel of Williamsburg, Treyburn Drive. 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 10 Jamestown Presbyterian, Ironbound Rd., 1-7 p.m.

Jan. 17 Williamsburg Landing, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Jan 19. Marshall Wythe Law School at the College of W&M, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Jan. 24 Walnut Hill Baptist Church, 2-7 p.m. Our local Red Cross Chapter is the Colonial Virginia Chapter, located Located in the Williamsburg Office Park, 317 Jamestown Road. Call 253-0228 or visit www.cvc.redcross.org for more information or visit www.givelife.org to make a blood donation appointment. – Ann Efimetz

WHO CAN GIVE Blood can be donated every 56 days. To give blood you must be: • Healthy • At least 17 years old in most states, or 16 years old with parental consent if allowed by state law. • Weigh at least 110 lbs. (additional weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school donors.) Facts: • 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion each year. • Someone needs bloods every two seconds. • About 1 in 7 people entering a hospital need blood. • One pint of blood can save up to three lives.

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. Come home to Colonial Heritage Colonial Heritage has earned its reputation as one of the premier active adult communities in our area. The neighborhood of about 650 homes offers countless amenities and a desired way of life. Paula Tenenbaum of Long & Foster Realtors, is an expert on Colonial Heritage, having completed nearly 30 transactions in just over three years. She is fully knowledgeable about each of the home models and the benefits of living in the gated, golf community which offers so many benefits to those who choose to live there. “History and culture abound in the area,” Tenenbaum said recently. “And people of all walks of life live in Colonial Heritage and bring and share their expertise.” The community welcomes adults 55 and older who are looking for a lifestyle that will complement their later years. “It is called active adult community because these people really do keep busy,” Tenenbaum said. “They go on trips, host parties and hold various events. The calendar at Colonial Heritage is always full. There are

many things Colonial Heritage has that other communities don’t.” Tenenbaum said the tight-knit feel of the community is another draw. “The residents do like the camaraderie,” she said. “People really do care about each other.” The homes practically sell themselves. “What really sets Colonial Heritage apart is the kind and amount of amenities offered its residents at affordable prices,” she said. “These are not custom homes, but development homes with choices of models that you personally can enhance inside or out.” Tenenbaum said she enjoys working with the clients who purchase homes in Colonial Heritage and regularly holds Open Houses in resales for those who are interested in finding out more and to show the clients new homes. “I personally love working with my clients, both sellers and buyers at Colonial Heritage,” she said. “I surely relate to them in every way and have made some lasting friendships.” – Ann Efimetz

Vibrant sound W&M Choral Scholars raise their voices at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church For the past several years, the late morning Eucharist service at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church in Toano has been graced with the voices of an 8person choir of students from the College of William & Mary. The Choral Scholars share their music and their enthusiasm with those who attend the service at the historical church. For the Rev. Michael Delk, pastor, the students bring an added, intangible dimension to the services. “The are such a blessing to us,” Delk said in a recent interview. “When they offer anthems or sing the psalm, for me personally it is helps me to draw closer to God. I think for a number of people in the congregation, they are very appreciative of this meditative opportunity. It opens the window to the sacred for a lot of people.” When Delk arrived at Hickory Neck as pastor in 2002, the late morning service was attended by only a handful of people. He decided that the addition of a traditional choir may help to complement the worship service. “The idea was to have a choir which could handle some of the classical music of our tradition,” he explained. “We needed a group that could manage those difficult pieces with a minimum amount of rehearsal time.” Delk soon met with a group of W&M students who expressed interest in being part of an octet. A working core group of about 12 students signed up and began singing at the service. They were well received. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2012

“Within a year, we had ten times as many people at that worship service,” he said. “I think it is because there are a lot of people in our community who like traditional worship done in a reverent and elegant way. The Choral Scholars provide a key element.” Delk said many of the former scholars who have graduated W&M keep in touch through letters or email. They regularly express how important being part of the group was to them in their spiritual development. “Many of them tell me that they have been strengthened spiritually,” Delk said. “They are a precious gift to our community while growing musically and growing in their relationship with God.” Delk said the upbeat, hopeful qualities displayed by the students is inspirational to him and to the members of the congregation. “It is encouraging to me,” he said. “You read sad stories and watch TV that lament the state of our aimless youth,” he said. “But if my contact with the Choral Scholars is any indication, we have a very bright future.” – Ann Efimetz

Players tackle Shakespeare The Williamsburg Players are taking on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” for its second production in the newly renovated and expanded James-York Playhouse. The Players recently wrapped production on the Broadway smash, “The Producers” which opened the new facility last November. Director Miguel Girona will direct the mature comedy about the battle of the sexes between Katharina and Petruchio. The main action revolves around the pair, as Petruchio, a gentleman attempts to “tame” the headstrong Katharina to be his wife. There’s also a subplot which features a competition between the suitors of Katharina’s sister, Bianca. The play has been adapted often for movies, opera and musical theater. Perhaps one of the most famous is Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me Kate.” Performances of “The Taming of the Shrew” are ThursdaysSaturdays, Jan. 5-21 at 8 p.m. Matinees are at 2 p.m., Saturdays. Call 229-0431 or visit www.williamsburgplayers.org for reservations.

Want to go to summer camp? Now is the time for kids grades 5-12 to apply for a scholarship to Nature Camp this summer. The Williamsburg Bird Club offers two full tuition scholarships through The Bill Williams Nature Camp Scholarship program. The scholarships of $750 each, fully cover a two-week summer program at Nature Camp in Vesuvius, Va. in George Washington National Forest. Shirley Devan of the Williamsburg Bird Club said offering the scholarships keeps with the club’s focus to encourage youth education. “We think the Nature Camp experience is one of the best educational experiences our club could sponsor,” Devan said recently. “Kids come back from Nature Camp and say they can’t wait to apply for next year’s camp. It is an incredible experience.” Devan said many of the Nature Camp scholarship recipients have gone on to major in science in college and have followed career paths in research, teaching and science fields. “For some of the kids who go to the camp, it is a life-changing experience,” she said. Since its inception, Nature Camp has emphasized hands-on, fieldbased, experiential education in natural history and environmental studies. Applicants are required to attend daily classes, to maintain a notebook, to complete all written assignments, and to participate in outdoor activities. Campers are expected to accept academic challenges with enthusiasm, commitment, and hard work. Interested students can download the Scholarship Application from the Bird Club web site: http://williamsburgbirdclub.org/ Students should also download and review the Nature Camp application, http://naturecamp.net/applications-and-forms/camper-application/ The deadline for scholarship applications is Jan. 17. Submission instructions are included on the application. The students who earn the scholarships will be contacted by the Williamsburg Bird Club by February 1, 2012. – Ann Efimetz

Celebrating Catholic schools The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” Walsingham Academy, which is our local Catholic School for grades PreK-12th grade, will celebrate the week with a variety of events. The school will hold an Open House, 1:30-3:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 29. The theme is “A Taste of Walsingham.” In each classroom, teachers will be available to discuss the school community and curriculum, and there will be a food item related to a lesson plan they teach. Families who are interested in learning more about Walsingham Academy are encouraged to attend the Open House to talk

with students, administrators and teachers. The week coincides with “Spirit Week” which celebrates a theme. Upper School students are invited to dress accordingly. Past themes have included Twin Day, Safari Day, Decade Day, TV Channels and Spirit Day. On the afternoon of Spirit Day, the Varsity Spirit Club leads a pep rally for students grades 6-12 which includes various sportsrelated competitions between the grades. Sometimes teachers are involved in competitions as well. The week also includes a celebration of Mass, and also encourages students the chance to participate in activities which highlight the nine Mercy

Core Values of dignity, integrity, spiritual growth and development, respect, hospitality, appreciation of diversity, compassion, justice and service. “Last year each class created a collage about a Mercy Core Value,” said Danielle Kelleher, who teaches theology at Walsingham. “The collages decorated the halls for the entire month. This year we are deciding between a few different ideas: having students create short films or skits demonstrating the values, or having them come up with a concrete way to live out the values.” – Ann Efimetz
