Busch Gardens opens for 2013 season Busch Gardens opens for a new season on Friday, March 22. Last year the exciting new ride, “Verbolten” made its debut, joining the other thrill rides at the park. Riders travel in a sports car-themed coaster train on a scenic drive through the German countryside, then will take an unexpected detour on a closed road that runs through a dark and forbidding forest at speeds of up to 55 mph. The Verbolten name is a play on “verboten,” the German word meaning forbidden. A bolt of lightning is in the logo for the ride. The ride has been hugely popular. Shows will return this year, including those at the Festhaus and Abbey Stone Theater. Seasons passes are available and are a good deal for those who frequent the park. A season’s pass is good through Howl-O-Scream.

Christmas Town will return in November with more attractions, shows and lights to delight people of all ages.

Get in the swing of spring Spring is the ideal time to spruce up the house and yard. There is a plethora of yard sales and flea markets during spring as people clean out attics, garages, closets and storage units. The Virginia Gazette will hold its annual Spring Yard Sale in May. Before that, there are many other events that may yield great treasures. Locally, there are several area thrift stores, consignment shops and charitable organizations which take clothing, furniture and other household items. It’s also a great time to make home improvements. Refreshing paint, carpeting, window treatments, bedding, appliances or home decor can make a major impact in the home. There are places throughout town that offer a variety of these products.

Now is the time to clean up debris in the yard left by winter. Landscape companies can help with advice on how to get a great lawn. There are also free services offered through the Virginia Cooperative Extension that can help homeowners have great lawns and gardens. As soon as the weather warms, it is a good idea to walk around the perimeter of the home and make note of any loose siding, gutters or windows. Rake the yard, fertilize the lawn and mulch flower beds for the coming warmer months. Area garden centers, department stores and home improvement centers regularly carry a variety of plants, bushes and other greenery to make the yard look its best. –Ann Efimetz

New site for Bid n’ Buy auction The 35th annual Bid ‘n Buy Auction will be held at noon March 24 at the Williamsburg Hotel and Conference Center (formerly the Williamsburg Marriot) located on Kingsmill Road. Traditionally, the event has been held at Lafayette High School. This year, to mark the auction’s 35th anniversary, CDR decided to move the location in order to add to the line-up of activities and provide additional space for auction items, vendors and participants. The auction will feature hundreds of silent and live auction items ranging from gift certificates to fine dining establishments, lodging and sports events, children’s toys, art, jewelry, items for the home and garden, jewelry, and products for health and wellness. One of the more popular features of the auction are themed gift baskets created by volunteers. The baskets are chock-full of fun items ranging from family movies to health and beauty items. The auction features a children’s activity area with plenty of fun things for kids to do. All proceeds from the auction help provide services to young children and their families, including home visits, parent groups, specialized therapies, developmental playgroups, and child care. For more information on the auction or to donate an item to call 566-3300, e-mail auction@cdr.org or visit auction.cdr.org

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc.

Nail Concepts

If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine.

Williamsburg welcomes Maureen McGovern Two shows at the Kimball Theatre March 30 You couldn’t turn on the radio in the early 1970s without hearing the voice of Maureen McGovern singing “The Morning After.” The Academy-Award winning song from the film “The Poseidon Adventure” was McGovern’s first hit, and it paved the way for an illustrious career that has spanned 40 years. This month, ShowStoppers Productions will present the legendary vocalist and actress for performances at 2 & 7:30 p.m. March 30 at the Kimball Theatre. McGovern will perform her concert, “A Long and Winding Road” which takes the audience back to the 1960s and 70s with music from iconic singer/songwriters, including Carole King, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Webb, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Randy Newman and many others. Some of the songs she will perform include “Fire and Rain,” “Let It Be,” “The Times, They Are A Changin’,” “The Moon’s A Harsh Mistress,” “The Circle Game,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?,” and of course, “The Morning After.” Speaking recently from her country home in Ohio, McGovern shared her excitement about performing in Williamsburg. She visited here almost 20 years ago and is enthusiastic about her return. The genesis of the concert came several years ago when she and musical director Jeff Harris, who accompanies her on piano, spent an entire summer going through the music of that era. What emerged was a 90 minute tribute to the music of the singer/ songwriters we both have loved since our musical coming of age.” “Jeff and I basically relived our youth going through this material,” McGovern said. “The music really strikes a profound chord in people. It resonates not just with Boomers, but with people in their teens all the way to their eighties and nineties.” McGovern said the music she will perform influenced her on the way to the life-changing hit, “The Morning After.” In 2013, she celebrates 40 years since it became a #1, Oscar-winning, international gold record and its popularity continues. “I still get letters about the song,” she said. “It is a universal hope song. It was written in such a way 30

that you can apply it to any situation in your life, if you lose your job, a family member or if there is some trauma you are going through. I will always be grateful to the song, and have been amazed at the way people continue to take it to heart through the years.” The show also contains many anecdotes about her varied stints in movies, TV and the recording studio. She creates a rapport with the audience and invites them into her world. “My audience and I get on the train together and have a great journey as we all relive our lives.” McGovern continues performing for audiences across the country all while working on her memoir, “Surviving the Morning After,” a spiritual CD, a children’s book and a jazz album for kids. Next year, she will appear in the all new “4 Girls 4,” with Andrea McArdle, Donna McKechnie and Faith Prince. The show will tour the country. Want to go? Call 800-HISTORY for tickets. –Ann Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury (Allow 30 minutes) Armoury Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury reflects the complexity and urgency of mounting a war effort against the world’s most powerful 18th-century nation. The newly reconstructed site features main armoury building, four blacksmith forges and the recently reconstructed kitchen. The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials.

March See & Do • March 8-10 – “Steadfast Spirits” weekend. A special program, “Liberty for Lydia,” features guest artist Erica Hubbard as Lydia, the young enslaved servant of George Wythe, who evolves into an independent and successful free woman. “Liberty for Lydia” is offered in two performances at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9 in the Kimball Theater. A question-and-answer session with Hubbard and the rest of the cast, moderated by WHRO-TV’s Barbara Hamm Lee, follows each performance and features questions submitted via social media channels. A separate $30 ticket is required. • March 9 – Sweet Honey in the Rock perform at 8 p.m. in the Virginia Room of the Williamsburg Lodge. Grammy-award-winning and internationally renowned African American female a cappella group take guests on a musical journey that follows in the path of the struggle for freedom of these steadfast women of the 18th century. The group performs music imbued with the history of the African American struggle for liberty and grounded in the tradition of sacred spirituals and gospel hymns from the African American church, protest songs of the civil rights movement and refrains of peace and justice that resound around the world. Tickets are $40 available from Ticketmaster. • March 15 and 22 – Civil War Walking Tour. The old colonial capital of Williamsburg played an important part in the American Civil War. In addition to serving as headquarters, first for the Southern Army and later for the Northern Army, it experienced a tragic battle on its doorstep. This evening walking tour of the major Civil War sites of the town allows guests to meet people who were here and learn more about Williamsburg's role in this important period of America's history. $15 adults, $7.50 youths. Call 1 800 HISTORY or visit www.colonialwilliamsburg.com for times and tickets. • March 24 –The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg open a groundbreaking new exhibition of extraordinary paintings associated with the Early American South in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. “Painters and Paintings in the Early American South” is the first exhibition of its kind that explores the scope of this region of early American art while bringing new vitality, excitement and scholarship to the forefront. Colonial Williamsburg has assembled these exquisite objects through years of painstaking research and collaboration to produce a stunning exhibition of portraits, landscapes, seascapes and other artworks pertinent to the Atlantic coast states from Maryland southward and the upper coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The exhibit runs through Sept. 7, 2014. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

Freshness you can taste at Zaxby’s Zaxby’s on John Tyler Highway offers an alternative to fast food. Since the restaurant opened in September 2010, Zaxby’s has strived to distinguish itself from other fast food chains. The business is owned and managed by Jane Wason. Wason and her family moved to Williamsburg from Georgia in 1994. Zaxby’s was founded in Georgia, which had a significant impact on Wason’s passion for the restaurant. Zaxby’s primary focus is customer satisfaction. “If you don’t make the customer happy, it’s just not going to work because making the customer happy is Number One,” Wason said. Zaxby’s philosophy on how to prepare food sets it apart. Zaxby’s is classified as quick dining. All of the food is prepared when ordered. Food is never pre-made and never sits under a heater. The process of preparing food to order ensures that customer’s selections served hot and fresh. The most popular item on the menu is the Chicken Fingerz Plate. That selection includes strips, signature “Zax” sauce, fries, Texas Toast and cole slaw. Customers can also choose from other signature sauces including Wimpy, Nuclear, Tongue Torch, Teriyaki and Insane.

Additionally, the restaurant offers wings, salads and sandwiches. “If you want a really good, messy sandwich, you should go for the Kickin’ Chicken because it has the Tongue Torch and Ranch sauces drizzled over the top,” Wason suggested. The restaurant features a catering menu and has provided food for a variety of groups including William & Mary basketball. “If anybody wants catering, we’re happy to do that,” she said. The catering menu features a variety of options including party platters, salads and customized lunch boxes. Future goals keeping the restaurant strong and perhaps expand to include another location. Zaxby’s is open daily 10 a.m.-10 p.m. –Taryn Rothstein

Still time to see Michelangelo Exhibit at Muscarelle continues this month The exhibit “Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Masterpiece Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti” at the Muscarelle Museum of Art continues through April 14. The major Michelangelo event features 25 drawings from the master. The exhibit has been drawing people from across the area. The selection of drawings from the masters collection has been preserved by his descendents in the family home, Casa Buonarroti in Florence. The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated, hardcover catalogue produced by the Muscarelle Museum of Art. The exhibition includes studies for paintings as well as designs and plans for churches and military fortifications. Several of the works have never been seen in the U.S. Throughout his career, Michelangelo (1475-1564) alternated between interpretations of the divine and the worldly, or profane. The master’s powers to evoke the sacred are fully displayed in the large drawing of the Madonna and Child, which is one of Michelangelo’s most admired images. The statuesque figures of the Virgin and Child are rendered in a fascinating mixture of techniques ranging from the underdrawing in black chalk to the powdered red chalk for the flesh tones in the Child’s arm. A renowned sculptor and painter, Michelangelo’s legacy as an architect was no less monumental. The Casa Buonarroti holds by far the most extensive and important collection of Michelangelo architectural drawings in the world, from which a selection of highlights has been chosen. The drawings selected for “Mi-

chelangelo: Sacred and Profane” are divided between studies for paintings and designs and plans for churches and military fortifications. The important ecclesiastical designs chosen for display in “Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane” include several plans too ambitious and costly to be realized: the facade of the church of San Lorenzo in Florence, the ground plan of the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome, and a new balustrade for the dome of the cathedral in Florence. After leaving here, the exhibit will travel to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Want to go? The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and noon until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission fee for the exhibit is $15. Admission is free for Museum members, The College of William & Mary faculty, staff, and students and children under twelve.

Dean said it is easy to play golf, dine or book an event at the community. Golf memberships are available, but anyone who wants to play the course is welcome to set up a tee time. “They see the gate and assume it is private,” she said. “But they just need to come through. Cut class! The campus of the College of William and Mary becomes a veritable springtime wonderland. Students enjoy outside activities in the Sunken Garden and at various locations throughout campus. The greenery comes alive as well. Crim Dell is a perennial favorite and is beautiful any time of year. The footbridge located in the center of campus holds historical significance. Crim Dell was a gift from the class of 1964, a friend of the college, David Baer and the family of John W.H. Crim. There is a plaque near the bridge honoring the memory of Crim, his wife Amelia and daughter, Barbara. Former William and Mary president Davis Paschall’s words at the dedication of Crim Dell in 1966 are forever remembered in another plaque near the footbridge. “That one may walk in beauty, discover the serenity of the quiet moment, and dispel the shadows....” Just off the footbridge are statues of two students who are permanently captured studying by the tranquil spot. –Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MARCH 2013

Easter finery Easter falls on Sunday, March 31 this year. Area churches celebrate the solemnity of the season with special Holy Week services and Sunday morning celebrations. The annual extravaganza, The Living Passover will be held at Crosswalk Community Church in Norge. Thousands of people attend the event, which has be-

come more popular each year. The musical journey which is directed by Gregory Ashley, features a cast and crew from diverse backgrounds and churches. The story brings audiences back 2,000 years to ancient Jerusalem. Each year, there is a secondary plotline to the main events leading to the Easter story of Christ’s death and resurrection. Tickets can be purchased online at www.thelivingpassover. com or by calling 784-3606. Tickets can be purchased for the show only or can include a meal, which is served prior. Throughout the month of March there are several Easter Egg hunts that delight children. Walsingham Academy features its Easter Egg Hunt on the Green at 9 a.m. March 16. The third annual event is free, open to the public, and features an egg hunt and fun activities for kids 7 and under, featuring face painting, juggling and a visit from the Easter Bunny. City of Williamsburg and James City County Parks & Recreation will present an Easter Egg Hunt 9:30 -11:30 a.m., March 30 at the Warhill Sports Complex on Longhill Road. The Easter Bunny will be hiding eggs for children walking to 7 years. This event is free but parents need to remember the Easter basket. Several other organizations around town also hold free Easter Egg hunts for little ones. Among them Chambrel of Williamsburg, Williamsburg Christian Church (Eggstravaganza), James River Community Center. Bring a basket and have fun! –Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MARCH 2013

Festival concludes this month This month the Virginia Peninsula Jewish Film Festival concludes at the Kimball Theatre. In late March, “Dolphin Boy” will be shown. The movie is scheduled March 23-24 at 4:45 and 6:30 p.m. The Festival began in November, and has continued throughout the winter. “Dolphin Boy” will be presented in Hebrew and Arabic with English subtitles. According the Internet Movie Data Base, the story follows Morad, beaten cruelly by classmates who mistakenly accuse him of having an affair with their engaged cousin. The boy is taken to the hospital by his father where he recovers from his wounds but does not speak or respond to anything for weeks. Morad is sent to treatment with dolphins. He undergoes therapy and develops an exceptional relationship with the dolphins. Morad starts speaking again after three months, but refuses to return to his village. He develops a relationship with an Jewish girl. The documentary tells the story of the devastating havoc that human violence can wreak upon the human soul, and about the healing powers of nature and of love. The film festival is sponsored by Temple Beth El and has brought award-winning films to the area for more than a decade. The films offered are chosen to appeal to a wide variety of audiences.
