Food, wine, friends The Wine & Cheese Shop at Kingsmill is located in the Village Shops at Kingsmill. It offers a variety of great sandwiches on delicious breads, an extensive selection of domestic and imported wine and cheese, gift items and gift bags. The focus is on personalized attention. Owners Marc and Amanda Aguilar take pride in serving each customer, treating them like family. They recently answered some questions about their business. How long has the store been in business? The business has been here since the early 1980s. We have owned it for a little more than a year. How has the store changed over the years? We changed from wine shop with sandwiches to a deli with an eat-in restaurant. We have transitioned into a specialty wine shop. What kind of wines do you carry? We don’t carry grocery store wines but wines for the wine connoisseur. We probably have 400 varieties. We have wines from around the world, from more than a dozen countries. What are some of the unique items that you carry at the store? Besides our fresh homemade bread, we sell big homemade cookies. Our homemade sandwiches include chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad and our specialty house sauce.

What about fresh olive oil? We carry 6 varieties of Laconiko Extra Virgin olive oil. Infused varieties are; regular, rosemary, sun dried tomatoes, basil, garlic and chives. You put it fresh into your own bottle to go. What is your philosophy of customer service? We go above and beyond and treat them the way we would want to be treated. What are the plans for the future? We are planning an expansion and improvement plans as well as a few enhancements. We plan to include an arts section in the future. Any special events coming up? We have complimentary weekly wine tastings Friday and Saturday noon to 7 p.m. We feature four wines each day. More than 100 of the LPGA’s top golfers are expected to come to the River Course May 2-5 in an event that has long been revered by the players and fans alike. Last September, Jiyai Shin defeated Paula Creamer during a Monday playoff, creating even more excitement about the tournament. The $1.3 million purse is expected to attract many of the LPGA’s brightest stars, including Stacy Lewis, Natalie Gulbis, Ai Miyazato, as well as Creamer and Shin. “We are excited and looking forward to a great event,” said tournament director Wayne Nooe during a recent interview. “The ﬁeld should be very strong and the course will be on rye grass, which will make the rough a little more difﬁcult than it was in September.” The River Course has hosted more than 30 professional golf events over the years, including both the PGA and LPGA Tours. A Jack Nicklaus designed

course, the fairways challenge players and rewards the big hitters on tour. Greater Williamsburg has embraced the LPGA Tour since its arrival in 2003 and it’s been a win-win for both groups. According to published reports, approximately 63,000 fans attended last September’s Kingsmill Championship tournament. Several thousand fans lined the 16th fairway to watch the playoff between Shin and Creamer. Economically, it is estimated the impact of this event is worth $6 million dollars to the Hampton Roads area through hotel rooms, meals, gas and ticket sales. Approximately $250,000 a year is raised for local charities. This year’s event starts Monday, Apr. 29 with a qualiﬁer, where two players will earn sponsor exemptions. Players will take part in practice rounds on Tuesday and some will take part in Wednesday’s ProAm. In addition, this year’s tournament boasts nearly 11 hours of national television coverage on The Golf Channel, which is broadcast to millions of homes around the world. Want to go? Riverside unveils Doctors’ Hospital Doctors’ Hospital at Quarterpath at Williamsburg at the intersection of Route 60 and Route 199 is scheduled to open at the beginning of May. This month, the public will get a chance to see the new 105,000 sq. ft.-facility at a Community Open House event scheduled 1-4 p.m. Sunday, April 14. People are invited to attend the open house to explore all the hospital has to offer. Staff and personnel will be on hand to answer questions. The community will also have the chance to offer input about what items should be sealed into a time capsule. Doctors’ Hospital features 40 all-private rooms. It will employ nearly 220 people and has cost around $72 million to construct. A recent job fair attracted more than 400 applicants who were seeking to work at the new facility. Providing the best, compassionate care to each patient is one of the goals of the staff. That mission has been reﬂected in the thoughtful layout of the hospital. The design incorporates an easy ﬂow between departments, with central locations for key services including pharmacy, radiology and laboratory, only steps from operating and emergency rooms. “It is all very well laid out,” said Arlene Messina, hospital head of nursing. “Many of the areas in other

hospitals are pushed to the back, but here all the departments are up front for convenience.” The design of the hospital didn’t stop with layout. Details including a pleasing color scheme, comfortable furniture and use of natural light also factored into the design. The warm earth tones used throughout the hospital provide a more homelike quality. Lights on the ceiling are shielded with special ﬁlters to ease the glare on the eyes of patients who are being wheeled on gurneys. The extensive use of windows bring natural light to all areas of the building. Many of those who visit the hospital will arrive as emergency room patients. The emergency department

“We are very excited about the ways the rooms have been laid out and the ability to document right in the room,” said Dr. Robert Harding. “We will be able to look at x-rays, and ultrasounds and show the patients the images right in the room.” Beds are equipped with a communication system that allows the patient to dial the nurse on a phone which she will have on her at all times. There’s been special attention given to patient and visitor culinary fare. A bistro-style cafeteria is available for visitors and will offer a variety of choices. “It will not be just grilled cheese sandwiches,” said Larry Shirts, director of facilities. “I like good food so I will make sure the food is good.” The cafe will offer beverages ranging from expresso to smoothies. A patio area will be open during warmer weather. A spacious groundﬂoor community room for support groups and other meetings will be available for organizations to use. There is a trend among new hospitals to make the experience more positive for both patients and their families. The ER department features 12 private rooms, all easily seen from the central nurses station. Patients will be assessed quickly and appropriate treatment determined so as to provide a quicker turn around. “No matter what the patients’ needs are, we can come to them in their room,” said Jane Burnette, the ER manager. “Whether they need sutures or a gyn exam, we come to them with the equipment needed.” The hospital’s operating rooms offer the highesttech equipment available. Floors have been carefully constructed of material that makes it easier for doctors and staff to stand on their feet for several hours while performing surgery. Elaborate sterilization equipment has been purchased. Steam autoclaves sterilize equipment at 270-degrees. Outside the operating rooms, there is a 42-inch “Smart Board” which will allow family members and loved ones to track where the patient is in real time. “They will be able to see where their loved one is in the process as it is happening,” said Kathleen Ware of surgical services. “We will also use restaurant-style pagers that can be used to page family members if they go to other locations in the hospital.” Each patient room will be equipped with its own computer. That will allow the healthcare staff to make notations to the patient’s chart without having to leave the room.

Getting around town Do you know how to get from Point A to Point B in Wiliamsburg? Don’t worry. If you are new to the area, or just visiting, there are plenty of ways to get around town. The Historic Triangle Shuttle, the public transportation service connecting Jamestown, Williamsburg is up an and running it will continue through Nov. 3 daily, 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. The shuttle is a free service provided by the National Park Service. Two routes of the shuttle leave every 30 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg

Visitor Center. One route travels the Colonial Parkway to Jamestown and the other follows the parkway to Yorktown. The Yorktown Trolley provides service between the Yorktown Battleﬁeld Visitor Center and the Yorktown Victory Center, as well as several stops between in the historic village, including Riverwalk Landing. The trolley runs through May 24 daily, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and during peak operation, May 25-Sept. 2, it runs 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. It runs 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 3-Nov. 3. The Williamsburg Trolley is also a great way to get around town. Hop the trolley to Merchants Square, High Street, New Town, Richmond and Jamestown Roads. The trolley cars feature ornamental wooden seating and a red and green exterior. The trolleys also have bike racks. On warm days, the trolley has an open-air atmosphere. Drivers point out historic sites, restaurants and attractions. Visit www.gowata.org for hours of operation. Williamsburg Area Transport buses run throughout the area. A milestone for Art on the Square The 50th annual Art on the Square will be held this month. The art show is the signature event and fundraiser of the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg. This year’s event will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, April 28 in Merchants Square. The event will feature more than 170 artists exhibiting works in media ranging from watercolor to handcrafted jewelry. Local artist Richard DePaul has again created the poster. Prints of this year’s “Springtime at the Raleigh,” will available at the event. The original watercolor painting will be rafﬂed. According to Kelly Arne, one of the event’s organizers, the club awards an average $5,000 a year in scholarships to high school seniors pursuing higher education in performing and visual arts. Additionally, last year the club donated $13,000 in donations to local organizations focusing on art and art education.

Riverside’s Center for Excellence in Aging & Lifelong Health has added the services of Dr. Bharati Srivastava who is working at the center as a boardcertified geriatrician. One of the goals of the center is to provide comprehensive assessments for seniors. Srivastava joins Dr. Hoskote Nagraj at the center seeing patients three days a week. The addition of Srivastava has tripled the center’s patient load. What used to be a 90-day wait for an assessment, now only takes about 30. That’s significant because the center is the only one of its kind in our area. “We are unique in this regard,” Rick Jackson, center executive director said. “When a patient comes here, they are evaluated by a doctor, a registered nurse, a social worker, a physical therapist and a neuropsychologist if needed. The patients have access to all of these clinicians. They come up with findings and recommendations. If an impairment is found, we help to determine what they can do to remain an active part of the community as long as possible.”

Srivastava sees a great need for the center’s services. “We still want to grow to a full geriatric assessment clinic so this is what we do all day, everyday,” Srivastava said. “There is a great need of such assessments.” As the amount of seniors living in greater Williamsburg increases, the need for services will grow exponentially. “Nationally the number of people who are over 65 is going to grow to 25 percent in the next decade,” Jackson explained. “But in Williamsburg, our population of people that age is already at 24 percent. That number is only expected to increase, as we are a retirement Mecca.” Up to six new patients are seen a day. More could be seen, but the process takes more time than an average physical. “The patients we see may have physical limitations, have hearing impairment, vision issues, mobility issues and it requires us to spend a fair amount continued on page 47
