Celebrating heritage, presidents February holds special significance. It is the month where we celebrate some of our countries influential leaders and also focus on the heritage of African Americans. To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. Each year, U.S. presidents proclaim February as National African-American History Month. Locally, Colonial Williamsburg will celebrate Black History Month with several special programs. There are usually other programs offered throughout the month by area organizations. The month will feature powerful characterizations and dramatic interpretive programs that bring to life stories of the African American struggle for freedom and liberty during this tumultuous period in American history. Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center will present “From Africa to Virginia” Theme Month, Feb. 1-28. Gallery exhibits and guided tours of the museum outdoor living-history areas will highlight the culture of the first known Africans in Virginia and the experience of Africans in 1600s and 1700s Virginia. 6
Public lectures will be held Feb. 10 and 24 at Jamestown Settlement to complement the monthlong theme. President’s Day will be celebrated at Colonial Williamsburg Feb. 16–18. Guests can neet three Founding Fathers, Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, whose Williamsburg experiences led to the creation of a nation. There will be music, meals, and special performances.

Discover Teas was conceived in the heart and mind of Chris Farishon in late 2010 and was open by March of 2011 in Williamsburg. Chris wanted more than just a tea shop. She wanted to create a space where a novice tea drinker could come and learn about teas from all over the world, and a place where the connoisseur could come to find their favorites as well as explore new varieties. The goal at Discover Teas was to make it a memorable experience for everyone that comes through the doors. Through their great services such as a Blend-Your-Own Tea Bar, personalized tea blending, and selection of a wide variety of quality hand-picked loose teas from around the world, they have grown exponentially. At the beginning of November, they opened another location in the Port Warwick Shoppes at Newport News. The new location still provides the same premium loose leaf experience as the existing one, plus a few more services such as special events and later hours. Photo courtesy Discover Teas

Fine quality Persian rugs Now is the time to visit the Oriental Rug Mart in Lightfoot. Store owner John Afzalirad has been in business at the location for more than 20 years. Due to several factors, including the decrease in availability of Persian rugs from overseas, the shop may soon close or move to a smaller facility. Customers over the years have frequented the shop to find distinctive handmade Persian and Oriental rugs. Afzalirad has traveled extensively to purchase unique pieces. The majority of rugs are from Afzalirad’s native Persia. “I have a variety of rugs, more than 1,500 rugs here,” he said. “They are beautiful rugs of art and workmanship.” He has visited small villages and towns and has purchased different styles, colors and sizes from embassy size to smaller pieces. “ I have a variety, and that is one of the good things about me,” he said. “A rug is art, that is why I go to villages. If someone toes to other rug marts you may see the rug repeated. I don’t have any repeat rugs. I don’t like that. That is like a rug machine. For that reason I go to villages, to towns to cities and I love it.” Some of the rugs for sale include large embassy size. “I love the big rugs,” he said. “I see the magnificent pieces and they do not make them like that anymore.” WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, FEBRUARY 2013
He noted that the materials to make the rugs are scarce and that the number of people making the pieces has dwindled over the years. That’s why it is a great time to shop at the store. “This is the best time to come,” he said. “It is the best time to come here.” Those who come to the store can be assured of the highest quality rugs at the best price he can offer. “I do for the people,” he said. “I welcome people to come here and they know we have the best service.” Those who peruse the inventory may see rugs that are very old and rarely found. “They are very classic pieces,” he said. “I sell unique pieces. These are masterpieces.” The store is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily, or by appointment. Call 565-2065. –Ann Efimetz

Taste the difference at Nawab Nawab features outstanding authentic North Indian Cuisine served in an elegant surrounding. Nawab has four Hampton Roads locations Williamsburg, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Newport News. Owner Ashok Arora recently answered questions about the restaurant located on Monticello Avenue. How long has your restaurant been in Williamsburg? We opened the Williamsburg location in 1998. The Norfolk location opened in 1992, Virginia Beach in 1997, and Newport News in 2000. Last year, we celebrated our 20th anniversary in Hampton Roads. How would you describe the cuisine at Nawab? Nawab Indian Cuisine offers a richly-varied menu of fresh, natural ingredients, wholesome sauces and flavorful spices. Everything is prepared to order. We don’t use any additives or preservatives. We offer vegetarian dining. Our fresh baked bread from our clay oven is a big hit.
Keeping in mind the ancient Indian cultural saying “Athithi Devo Bhava” (Guest is God) we always put our guest ahead of us. Courteous and friendly customer service is what we believe helps in building strong patronage. What is the future for the restaurant, any new items or specials? We recently finished remodeling the interior completely. On a yearly basis, we update our menu with new dishes that were requested by our patrons or our chef has put together. We offer a 10% discount during dinner from Sunday to Thursday to our military families. –Ann Efimetz
What are some of the most popular items on the menu? Chicken Tikka Masala, Mixed Grill, Lamb Vindaloo, Seafood Kerala Curry, and Garlic Naan are some of our most popular items on the menu. Do you have a lot of local customers? Yes, we have a strong base of local loyal customers. How about out-of-town visitors? Yes, Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg bring seasonal out-of-town visitors. How important is customer service? Customer service is at the heart of our operations. 26

timeless songs with her rich soprano voice 7:30-10 p.m. with no cover charge. Cash has recorded 11 number one singles, blurring the genres of country, rock, roots and pop. She has received one Grammy award and 12 Grammy nominations, among other awards and accolades, including an honorary doctorate from Memphis College of Art. A prolific writer, she has authored “Bodies of Water” and “Penelope Jane: A Fairy’s Tale,” edited the book “Songs without Rhyme” and recently penned her memoir “Composed.” Her album, “The List,” based on a list of country songs her legendary father Johnny Cash gave her when she was 18, won the Americana Music award for Best Album of the year and was a critical and commercial success. Moody is a two-time Juno Award-winning songwriter from Winnipeg. Although best known for her work with The Wailin’ Jennys, Moody is an artist of exceptional depth and grace in her own right. Former lead singer of the Canadian roots band Scruj MacDunk, she has performed in sold-out venues around the world, made numerous critically-acclaimed albums, and has appeared more than a dozen times on the American national radio show “A Prairie Home Companion.” In 2010, she released her highly anticipated solo album, “The Garden,” to rave reviews.

Winter series of festival this month This month the Virginia Peninsula Jewish Film Festival continues at the Kimball Theatre. At the end of the month, “Remembrance” will be shown. The movie is scheduled Feb. 23-24 at 6:45 and 8:45 p.m. The movie is presented in German, English, Polish and Russian with English subtitles. According to the Internet Movie Data Base, the film depicts a love story that blossomed amidst the terror of a German concentration camp in 1944, Poland. A Polish prisoner manages to rescue his Jewish girlfriend. Against all odds, they escape the camp and survive a treacherous journey to freedom. But during the chaos of the end of the war, they are forcibly separated and each is convinced that the other has died. More than 30 years later in New York, the happily married 52-year-old woman accidentally finds out that her former Polish lover is still alive, and she has to see him again. The movie was written by Pam Katz and is directed by Anna Justice. The film festival is sponsored by Temple Beth El and has brought award-winning films to the area for more than a decade. The films offered are chosen to appeal to a wide variety of audiences. More –– www.kimballtheatre.com –Ann Efimetz

Start thinking spring It’s not to early to start thinking about spring. Although February can be a bleak month, there are still outdoor activities to engage people of every age. Gardening is a great activity for all people, but is especially beneficial for older adults. Gardening can keep you fit and healthy and the produce yielded from a garden contains vital nutrients. Seniors can get particular benefits because gardening is considered a form of exercise. According to GetMyPestOut.com, gardening helps in many ways: Accomplishment-- Gardening gives the gratification of hard work. If you give it some time it will pay off with beautiful flowers and plants.

Stress relief--Being a part of nature is one of the best ways to relieve stress. Good nutrition-- If you choose to grow vegetables or even fresh herbs you’ll find yourself eating better. Fresh vegetables are loaded with antioxidants. Selfish time-- Gives people a chance to spend time away from the phone or other distractions. Enjoying the outdoors is also beneficial. The Williamsburg Botanical Garden provides regular programming. The garden is located in Freedom Park off Centerville Road. There are several events planned that can help shake off the winter doldrums and get you ready for spring. It’s also important to note that volunteers are always needed to help keep the garden looking its

best. It’s a perfect fit for area retirees who enjoy spending time outdoors. Here are some upcoming programs: Feb. 16-- “Bluebirds in our Gardens.” An adult walk and talk lecture will be held in the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. Shirley Devan, certified Virginia Master Naturalist and Williamsburg Bird Club president will lead a workshop. The habits of the Bluebird family will be discussed. There will be a walk through the area to see bluebirds and their nesting boxes. March 16-- “Raised Bed Vegetable Gardens” will be lead by Susan Donnelly, Master Gardener. She will show participants how to construct and maintain vegetable gardens in raised beds. April 20-- “Barrels and Bins” will be held in the Botanical Garden. Master Gardeners will show gardeners how to grow healthy and delicious fresh vegetables and herbs using sustainable and environmentally friendly projects. The team will demonstrate how to build a rain barrel, how to make a composter using readily available materials and how to construct a self- watering container. Barrels and Bins will be available for sale. Visit www.williamsburgbotanicalgarden.org. –Ann Efimetz

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor DPA667172

Pet adoption awaits The Heritage Humane Society is located on Waller Mill Road. The facility receives 1,200 lost, stray and unwanted companion animals a year. Of those animals over 1,000 are adopted into loving and permanent homes. Many others remain in rescues, foster homes, or hospice care. The mission of the organization is to provide a compassionate haven for stray or unwanted companion animals, education for the public about humane care and treatment, advocation about animal welfare, and promotion of adoption to measurably reduce overpopulation and pet homelessness. The Heritage Humane Society website at www.heritagehumanesociety.org features a gallery of pet photos of available animals. The society also asks that before you visit the facility that the cost and time committment associated with pet ownership are considered. Pets can cost $400-700 a year for food, medical care, training classes, toys and other expenses. They require food, water, exercise, care and companionship every day. Keep in mind that many apartments and other rental communities have restrictions or don’t allow pets. Those who choose to adopt a pet need to consider that the adoption is for the rest of the pet’s lives. Pets needs constant love and attention. The facility is open noon- 4 p.m. every day except Thursday.

Positive results The decision for Discover Teas to advertise with the Williamsburg Magazine was an easy one! Knowing that our ad would be widely seen by the local market as well as visitors, it just made sense. Budgeting for only one print ad our first quarter, we needed the biggest bang for our buck. And we got it! Our Grand Opening was a huge success, and we continue to see a steady flow of residents and visitors walk through our doors ready to Discover Teas. -Chris Farishon & Kenneth Roberts of Discover Teas

It may seem like you are just putting away the the Christmas decorations when it’s time for Lent. This year, Easter falls early, March 31. That pushes the beginning of Lent, Ash Wednesday to Feb. 13. Mardi Gras will be celebrated on Feb. 12. Mardi Gras is a traditional holiday celebrated in many states, with the most famous celebration in New Orleans, La. There are parades, masquerade balls and other festivities to mark the date. Mardi Gras is known as the “biggest free show on earth.” According to the website, www.holidays.net, Mardi Gras came to New Orleans through its French heritage in 1699. Early explorers celebrated it on the banks of the Mississippi. Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” because it is celebrated on that day of the week.
The date can fall between February 3 and March 9 depending on the lunar calendar, used by the catholic church to determine the date of Easter. Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter Sunday. The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors were chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. He chose these colors to stand for the following: Purple –– justice Green –– faith Gold –– power It is traditional to eat pancakes and other delicious foods on Mardi Gras in preparation for Lent, which for many is marked by fasting until Easter. –Ann Efimetz
