Christmas traditions at Chickahominy House “We have traditions at the Chickahominy House that have been going on since we opened in 1955,” said owner Maxine Williams. “We have people who come here over the holidays who have been coming for years.” There’s a special feeling at the Jamestown Road restaurant on Christmas Eve. Homemade eggnog is served beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continues until the doors close in early afternoon. Santa sings songs with the customers, putting them in the true spirit. “We feed about 250 people that day,” she said, adding a reminiscence about 1998 and the infamous Christmas Eve ice storm that hit our area hard. “People were calling us that day and asking, ‘What are we going to do? That is a tradition with our family,” she said. The same sentiment abounds during Grand Illumination weekend. Several families make a meal at the Chickahominy House part of their yearly tradition. “Sometimes it is four or five generations of families that come in,” she said. “Every family has their

holiday traditions and for some the Chickahominy House is one that they feel they have to visit at least once during the season.” Williams and her staff begin preparing for the Christmas season in late fall. Trees are decorated whimsically and the restaurant slowly becomes a winter wonderland. By the time Halloween is over, the restaurant is bedecked in full Christmas finery. The menu of homemade comfort food appeals to all ages and tastes. Dessert is always popular. “Our coconut cream pie is our Number One seller,” Williams said. The Chickahominy House will participate in the annual Jamestown Road Open House, Nov. 3-4. The singing Santa will be part of that event. Williams hopes that those who haven’t visited the restaurant will drop by over the weeks leading up to Christmas and beyond. “They can start a new family tradition, bring the kids, bring the grandparents and start a family tradition.”

local spin

The art of community It’s been two years since a group of artists opened New Town Art Gallery on Main Street in New Town. Since, the gallery has grown and prospered, becoming a popular spot among visitors and locals who want to see and buy quality artwork. Additionally, the gallery has actively participated and hosted a variety of community-minded activities. The gallery features the artwork of Gulay Berryman, Mary Buenting, Sue Danehy, Dorothy Grebos, Renee Kennedy, Kay Krapfl, Anne Kushnick, Linda Miller, Sharon Parker, June Skalak and Wen-Shu Wu. On any given day if you visit the gallery, you will meet them. “What makes us unique is that the artists choose what they put up,” said Anne Kushnick, one of the founding members of the gallery. “They have full say in what they show.” The work created by the artists runs the gamut from still life to Colonial Williamsburg scenes. Work is continually being added as more pieces are sold. Kushnick said business has enjoyed a boost over the past several months. The artists are continually looking for ways to give back to the community. At the beginning of next month, the annual Christmas party will benefit Fish. Proceeds from a raffle will be given directly to Fish to help provide food and necessities to those

who need it most. In the past, the gallery has hosted events with proceeds benefiting other area organizations including Heritage Humane Society. “We select a charity to go along with what ever party we are doing,” Kushnick explained. “We have a gift with the gallery, and we just want to give back. From the beginning we said we wanted to give back to the community.” Area businesses and groups have rented the gallery for their office parties. That’s especially true during the holiday season. “They rent the space out and bring in the caterers and have a nice party at the gallery,” she said. A red dot program has been implemented to help people afford works of art.“It’s sort of like layaway,” Kushnick said. “If they see a piece they like, they pay for it on time. I have just sold one that way.” For Kushnick, the gallery is the ideal way for her to express creative side. “I love art and I love painting,” she said. “All the artists at the gallery do too.” For more information, visit www.newtownartgallery.com –Ann Efimetz

Send a smile Morrison’s Flowers has begun a new program designed to sprout happiness throughout the community. “Send a Smile” allows people to nominate someone they feel needs a “pick-me-up” and could benefit from a cheery bouquet delivered to their door. Arlene AitkenWilliams, co-owner of Morrison’s, which is located on Jamestown Road, said the program has blossomed into a positive way for folks to brighten other’s lives.

It’s easy. All people have to do is visit Morrison’s Flowers Facebook page and click on the “Send a Smile” icon. Those receiving bouquets are picked randomly from nominees. Aitken-Williams said that the people who have been selected have had compelling circumstances. Some have been challenged by cancer, another had a difficult surgery that had confined her to a wheelchair, another was a selfless caregiver. “Each person who has been selected has had an incredible story,” she said. “I have had some great recipients who have definitely needed it. It has meant a lot to them.” The folks selected crosses all demographics. “It is just for someone who needs a smile,” she said. Aitken-Williams hopes more people learn about the program so that they can send more. “We really would love to send one bouquet every week to a person who needs a pick-me-up,” she said. The arrangement delivered is comprised of bright yellow flowers in a cheery container. “It is a great way to say I am thinking of you and to brighten someone’s day,” she said. The program has a dual purpose. “It is our way to give back to the community that we can do and say this is making a difference.” For more information, visit Morrison’s Flowers Facebook page. morrisonsflowers@aol.com. –Ann Efimetz

Seeing green on Black Friday Black Friday officially begins the holiday shopping season. This year, it falls on Nov. 23. The day is traditionally thought to be the busiest shopping day of the year, although many retailers report the Saturday before Christmas is when

they make the most money. There is no denying that Black Friday is a popular shopping day. Most people have off from work and use the day to get a jump start on holiday shopping. Many of our area outlet and shopping areas have special

hours, with some opening at midnight or in the wee hours of the morning. Discriminating shoppers may get in line hours before the doors open to get bargains before they are all gobbled up. Many stores have special offers with very low prices on some goods, particularly on electronics and popular toys. Televisions, laptops, computers, GPS systems, DVD and MP3 players, digital cameras and video games are all hot sellers on Black Friday. And the bargains aren’t just at actual stores. Online retailers also take advantage and offer great deals online. There are several websites and places on Facebook which give people a sneak into online and actual store bargains. Here are a few to check out which can provide tips for local shopping with information about bargains. www.theblackfriday.com www.bfads.net and www.blackfriday.com. –Ann Efimetz

local spin

Focus on excellence at Plaza Azteca Plaza Azteca opened in High Street in Nov. 2009. Since, the restaurant, specializing in Mexican cuisine, has gained a growing local clientele as well as appealing to out-of-town guests. The food is made with the freshest ingredients available. It is a popular spot for both lunch and dinner. The restaurant has been voted Best Mexican Restaurant for two consecutive years in the annual Best of Williamsburg Reader’s Contest. The varied menu features popular Mexican favorites including fajitas, tacos, chimichangas, burritos and chicken and fried rice. Customers can order fresh guacamole, made tableside according to their taste. A new menu has been introduced with items including spinach burritos, tuna tostadas and shrimp pasta with chipotle sauce.

“I believe the clientele enjoys our delicious food as much as our friendly servers,” said Fernando Jimenez of Plaza Azteca. “I am always trying to make my clientele feel they are in a family-friendly environment, making an effort to make everybody feel welcome as part of the Plaza family.” Customer satisfaction is the primary focus. “Our most important goal is to make our clientele feel welcome and happy,” he said. “In every opportunity we always talk about the importance of customer service, always keeping in mind that hospitality goes further than just customer service.” Jimenez said he hopes Plaza Azteca can open another location in Williamsburg in the future.

Mad About Chocolate Mad About Chocolate opened last spring on Armistead Avenue. It is owned by Marcel and Connie Desaulniers and features delicious cuisine in colorful, artsy surroundings. The freshly made chocolate desserts, scrumptious soups and famous cookies has distinguished the cafe and has established a faithful local following. It’s not unusual for a line to form around lunchtime for one of the light but delicious menu offerings. “We have a pretty busy lunch crowd,” Marcel Desaulniers said recently. “The soup is delicious, and we have had nothing but compliments about Art by Connie Desaulniers what we have been doing.” Connie Desaulniers, Marcel’s wife, has decorated the space with her whimsical, vibrant art. Her paintings and 3-D works are throughout the space, giving it a trendy, fun feel. During the holiday season, Connie’s new clay Santas will adorn the place. The menu varies but features a variety of lunch and breakfast

items, including homemade granola. “We make our own granola,” said Desaulniers. “Some granola can be too sweet, but we use wildflower honey and it is really terrific. We sell a lot of it. We serve it here as a parfait with Greek yogurt in mult-layers.” Cookies are always popular and include the famous Black Mamba, Mrs. D’s Chocolate Chip and the Tribe Cookie. That features lemon zest, pistachios with white and milk chocolate. Cookies can be ordered and shipped as gifts. As the weather gets cooler, warm desserts are extremely popular including warm bread pudding with ice cream. “We just had a lady visiting here from Madison, Wisconsin come in and sat down and had the warm bread pudding with ice cream,” he said. Mad About Chocolate is open Tuesday-Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. –Ann Efimetz 35

Christmas Town to twinkle bigger This month, the popular attraction, Christmas Town opens at Busch Gardens and will run through the holiday season. This year, the park is promoting “5 million sparkling lights,” and is adding new features for people to enjoy. There are many interesting aspects to Christmas Town, including the ability to get a higher view of the park from either the sky ride or Mach Tower. Those who choose to ride the latter can see the park at 240 feet above Oktoberfest. Christmas Town features a variety of shows and unique gifts to help people with their shopping lists. One of the more popular spots in the park is Santa’s workshop where kids of all ages can talk with

St. Nick. One of the most visually spectacular aspects is the 50-foot tall, light-animated Christmas tree. This year Busch Gardens will host the 2012 Christmas Town Dash 8K. It is sponsored by Busch Gardens and Chick-fil-A and combines family, fitness and fun to benefit the Marine Corps’ Toys For Tots campaign. The event will be held Sunday, Dec. 2, and those who participate will be able to run or walk through the park. The course is challenging, but is fully paved and perfect for runners of all experience levels. For more information about Christmas Town, visit www.seaworldparks.com.

Positive results The decision for Discover Teas to advertise with the Williamsburg Magazine was an easy one! Knowing that our ad would be widely seen by the local market as well as visitors, it just made sense. Budgeting for only one print ad our first quarter, we needed the biggest bang for our buck. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! Love Life at Heritage Commons

Frank McCormac, 91, a resident of Heritage Commons earned nine medals for his service during World War II. His medals included the Purple Heart. On the way back, the group was hit by a barrage of German artillery. Planes were hit on both sides and went down. Some 20 planes and crew were lost, but McCormac was fortunate to be in one of the few planes to return.

Holiday Antiques Show is a favorite Williamsburg is a holiday destination. The Holiday Antiques Show has become a favorite stop for visitors and locals. It is held the weekend following Thanksgiving and gives people the chance to shop for unique items sure to please those on their holiday lists. The 31st annual event will feature walled booths and room settings which will showcase a variety of small gifts, estate jewelry, art and furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries. The show is scheduled 6-9 p.m., Nov. 23; 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Nov. 24 and 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Nov. 25 at the Williamsburg Hotel and Conference Center on Kingsmill Road. The vendors are carefully selected and invited by Bettianne Sweeney, show manager. She travels extensively during the spring and summer months seeking new exhibitors. This year’s selection of more than 30 dealers represents eleven states and the UK. Collectors and respected antiques dealers are pleased to engage in conversation, sharing information and history about their objects. The show appeals to those who enjoy collecting antiques as either a hobby or a passion. There is a large selection offered at reasonable prices.

One of the features of the show is an appraisal clinic by Gordon Converse, Gordon S. Converse & Co., Wayne, Penn, formerly of the Antiques Road Show. The $10 fee per object is donated to charity. Reservations are available by calling 220-1299 or 870-6924. Walk-ins are accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

A Thanksgiving story Berkeley Plantation will hold the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival, Sunday, Nov. 4 at the plantation in Charles City County. The annual event draws thousands to attend the celebration of the 1619 landing of the colonists. The day is dedicated to history, food and fun. The event includes tours of the autumn gardens, arts & crafts, children’s activities, tribal dancers and historical reenactments. Beginning Dec. 1, Berkeley will host, “Centuries of Christmas at Berkeley Plantation.” The mansion will be beautifully decorated with fresh greenery from Berkeley’s gardens. Costumed guides will share stories of Christmas at Berkeley through four centuries of history. Here are some fun facts courtesy of the U.S. Census Bureau. Thanksgiving Day, which falls on Thursday, Nov. 22 is a day traditionally celebrated with staples of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, squash and cranberry sauce. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving.

66

Later, President Franklin Roosevelt clarified that Thanksgiving should always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping. Black Friday occurs the day after the holiday. Oh, and don’t feel too guilty about your turkey dinner. The meat is a great source of iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and B vitamins. And that sleepy feeling you get after stuffing yourself with turkey? That’s from an amino acid, tryptophan, a natural sedative in turkey. There are three places in the United States named after the holiday’s traditional main course. Turkey, Texas, Turkey Creek, La. and Turkey, N.C. There are 28 places in the United States named Plymouth, as in Plymouth Rock, where the Pilgrims landed. There is one township in the U. S. named Pilgrim, in Dade County, Mo. And then there is Mayflower, Ark. –Ann Efimetz

the area and came upon Chambrel. Realizing the community was nearing the end of construction, I said to my husband, “I want to work here when it opens.” Why did you think the job was a good fit for you? Working with seniors has always a passion for me. Even at the tender age of 13, as a volunteer working in the hospital, I gravitated toward working with them. I wanted to be around seniors, have fun with them and hear their stories.I’ve always had a special connection, love and appreciation for them and a deep desire to serve them. What are some of your daily responsibilities? Of course, as a Lifestyles Director, you wear many, many hats and everyday is a bit different, depending on what is on the calendar for the day. It could be decorating for a dance or program to leading an activity, serving as bartender at “Mix and Mingle”, setting up chairs or a power point for a scheduled lecturer. Everyday is different for me. How has the community changed over the years? Photo by Ann Efimetz

Brenda Perkins, who has been the lifestyle director at Chambrel of Williamsburg for the past 25 years, recently reflected on her job and her experiences at the community for older adults. How did you find out about the job at Chambrel? In 1987, my husband and I moved to Williamsburg from New Jersey. Soon after moving here, we were driving around town to get acquainted with WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, NOVEMBER 2012

The public will now get the absolute lowest prices on our entire inventory! Everything must go!
