The place for wicker Williamsburg Wicker and Patio in Norge has been in the outdoor and sunroom furnishings business for nearly 25 years. The family owned and operated business sells mainly high-quality wicker, rattan, aluminum, upholstery, teak and sling for indoor, outdoor and porch. “At Williamsburg Wicker, we have been in the outdoor and sunroom furnishings business for nearly 25 years, and we know our product well. We work very hard to give our customers the best selection of fine-quality furniture, at highly-discounted prices,” said Katie Carpenter, who owns the business along with her parents, Elva and Oscar Harrell. “We go to multiple furniture markets a year and personally select our unique mix of furniture.” Carpenter also added that store manager Anne Sheeran has been with the business more than 15 years. Furniture selections at Williamsburg Wicker run the gamut for all tastes and budgets, and customers are treated with the utmost service. “We try to differentiate ourselves with our commitment to customer service, and the depth of detail we go to in making sure our customers are happy,” she said. “We try to go the extra mile with our cus-

tomers. We draw out their floor plans and create a room plan for them, and even go to a customer’s home with books, finishes and fabrics.” The store is housed in a turn-of-the-century Victorian farmhouse in Norge that served as a hotel and tea-room for the Norwegian settlers. The large wrap-around porch is surrounded by orchards and gardens. Inside, furniture is arranged in a room-like setting, with stylish artwork, lamps, accessories and rugs. The setting helps people see what the furniture may look like in their own home. The store’s busiest months are February through September as people focus on getting outdoors. “We are definitely very busy all spring and summer, as people decorate their porches, decks, and other outdoor areas,” she said. “Our attention turns to sunrooms and indoor spaces in the cooler months.” Carpenter commented that new customers are frequently surprised by the large selection, and the number of collections, offered at the store. “We are more than our name as we sell so much more than just wicker,” she said. “We have many different styles of wrought and cast aluminum, teak, marine-grade polymer and sling. And for indoors, we have beautiful upholstery on the floor, as not everyone wants wicker in their sunroom.” – Ann Efimetz

Derby Day is here The 15th running of the Virginia Derby is scheduled for Saturday July 21 at Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent. The Virginia Derby is Colonial’s annual signature race, and gives the track a chance to showcase its Secretariat Turf course to the nation. The $600,000 (Gr.II) Virginia Derby is the richest and most important race on the Virginia racing calendar. In addition to being one of the largest social events in Virginia, it also annually attracts the best 3year-old turf horses, jockeys and trainers in the nation, including two champions and three Breeders’ Cup winners in recent years. Over 10,000 racing fans packed the track for the 2011 Virginia Derby. Parties for the event start at 4 p.m. and post time is 6 p.m. Those who attend can enjoy festivities and wager a dozen races. There are a variety of unique trackside parties to make the experience memorable. Those who attend can wear “Derby-style” headwear and compete in the Lite 98 Fancy Hat Contest, hosted and judged by Bill Bevins of radion station Lite 98, Shelly Perkins and Miss Virginia. There are two ways to enjoy Derby Day. A $30 allinclusive Trackside Party Zone ticket includes admission, program, tip sheet, BBQ dinner, three beer/wine tickets, a commemorative Derby t-shirt, music by a disc jockey and a concert with “Honky Tonk Heroes.” The other option is “Bring Your Own Beverage” party in the track’s first turn area, “Hoot on the Hill.”

Tailored after a Derby or Preakness-like infield fest, attendees can “bring their own party” by purchasing a $10 “Hoot” ticket. Pop up tents, grills, coolers and food and alcoholic beverages are welcome. The event is hosted by 30 Hooters girls and members of the Richmond Ski Club. Live “yacht rock” music will be provided by “Three Sheets to the Wind.” There are regular seating amenities available on Derby Day. Fans can enjoy finish line box seats, air conditioned dining rooms, reserved grandstand seats or even simple $5 general admission tickets. Kids 12 and under get in for free.

COLONIAL DOWNS Colonial Downs, which opened in 1997, is still one of racing’s newest horse racetracks. It is a stunning state-of-the art facility and is located 20 minutes west of Williamsburg in New Kent County. Take Interstate 64 to Exit 214. Colonial Downs is unique among U.S. tracks. 90% of the thoroughbred races are run on grass, only 10% on dirt. The turf course is 180 feet wide, larger than any other track’s in the country. Since Secretariat was born in nearby Caroline County, the course was named in honor of “Big Red” in 1998. For more information, visit www. colonialdowns.com or call 804 966-7223, ext. 1032. Finding Seuss Art-cade hosts 12th annual event Before there were Dr. Seuss books, there were Dr. Seuss magazine illustrations, political cartoons and advertising art. During July, The Art-cade Gallery of Williamsburg is hosting its 12th annual Art of Dr. Seuss exhibit and sale offering visitors the opportunity to own a limited edition art print of a Dr. Seuss family favorite image. As one of only 30 authorized Dr. Seuss Art dealers in the country, The Art-cade offers reproductions of not only his popular book art and artwork from his early professional career but also other works he painted for his own amusement. Getting his career started was not easy. At age 23, young Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss, unsuccessfully sought to sell his artistic talents to many New York City publishers. However, perseverance prevailed. He eventually was offered a job with “Judge” magazine. His first cover work appeared in the June 1933 issue of “Judge.” Now republished as “After Dark in the Park” this and later cover paintings Seuss did are an amazing preview of his later and more famous storybook illustrations. Even at this stage of his career several of the animals and characters that would become part of Seuss’ much-loved repertoire appear in this painting, even the stacking of turtles which was a prelude to Yertle. The joy and optimism in “After Dark” are all the more remarkable considering the dark economic times in which they were created and published. An example from Ted Geisel’s later magazine career, “A Prayer for a Child,” appeared in the Dec. 23, 1955 issue of “Collier’s Magazine” as a full-color, full page feature. This print is the only published art in which Seuss breaks a self-imposed rule of not having religious connotations in his work, something he thought might prevent the art from appealing to children of different faiths. Throughout his career Dr. Seuss was a private man with a very large public following. But creative ideas did not always come easily. At one point early in his writing career when stories for new books eluded him, he painted “Self Portrait of an Artist Worrying About His Next Book.” After this bit of oil-on-canvas introspection, an 10

idea finally appeared. What he penned and illustrated was “Green Eggs and Ham,” which became the third Images courtesy The Art-cade Gallery best selling book in the English language. Families visiting the gallery in July can register to win a “Cat in the Hat” cookie jar. The gallery is open Wednesday-Saturday. Call 5657424 or visit www.artcadeonline.com. Singing praise Summer Music Camp is celebrating 20 years this summer. It has been a place where school-age kids could raise their voices in praise of God while having fun in a variety of activities. Rayleen Kie, Cindy Freeman, Pat Avery and Sarah Bland brainstormed ideas for a summer music day camp. “We wanted our children to have a high quality, fun sacred music camp experience that focused on choral music, because we were all choral musicians,” Bland said recently. “And that included other kinds of music arts that could be incorporated into worship.” The purpose of the group has been to “provide children a summer singing experience, and to introduce them to new forms of musical and artistic expression, all to the praise of God.” The camp has changed locations over the years but now has found its permanent home at Williamsburg United Methodist Church. Parents and children have continued to respond enthusiastically about the high quality of classes and the loving, nurturing environment. “I think parents are always amazed and impressed with how well the children know their music and how beautifully they sing in the closing program,” she said. Classes have diversified over time, but some

including, handbells, choir chimes, drama, and liturgical dance have remained. Others, like the introductory organ class, recorders and composing at the computer, have been added For the 20th year, kids will be offered new classes and some new teachers. There will be a beginning guitar class, a beginning group piano class for younger children and a new choir director. Deborah Carr is the new organist/choir director at St. John’s Hampton and will work with the older children. History will also be recognized. Avery, who has been living and teaching in Loudon County for several years, is coming back to direct the Mass Choir. Bland will direct grades 1-3 choir, as she did the first year of camp. “Most of the music we will be singing has been done in previous years, sort of the ‘Best of Summer Music Camp,’” she added. Some kids who have progressed through the camp have returned to volunteer. Feedback has been positive. “Last year a little boy said about his choir director, ‘“I want to do what Mrs. Freeman does when I grow up.’” Camp will be held July 9-13, 9 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. with a final vesper service at 7 p.m. Friday, July 13 in the church sanctuary. – Ann Efimetz

Kids shine at StageLights For the past 20 years, StageLights has been giving area kids a chance to perform musical theatre in a fun, safe setting. Founder Judy Zwerdling Zwelling has served as music director each summer. “When my three daughters were young children, I kept wishing there were a musical theatre program in the community, since all of us loved to sing, act, dance, and listen to musicals,” Zwelling said recently. “One summer we carpooled with another family to Norfolk so that our children could be in the Hurrah Players. It was then I realized that if I wanted such a program in Williamsburg, I needed to start it.” She and Emily Pease decided to give it a try. That summer, 25 kids aged 8-13 successfully presented “How to Eat Like a Child,” paving the way for the future. The success opened the door to a three-week studio workshop in which gave kids who prefered a non-musical play a chance to participate. Today, the StageLights summer season consists of the five-week main stage musical, the studio workshop and two mini-workshops. There is a paid staff of 8-10 people. Beth Wigley first started with StageLights during the second season, directing the three-week nonmusical production. “I always enjoy the StageLights kids: they're so enthusiastic and

fun to work with,” she said. “It’s tough to put on a production in three weeks time and they always amaze me with their talent and commitment.” Richard Parker has served as president of StageLights for three years and as artistic director of the five-week Mainstage Musical for 17 years. “I look forward to the summer and working with the children. We always have such a strong, dedicated group of talented kids and they bring an enormous amount of energy and enthusi-

asm to each rehearsal,” he said. “It keeps me young." StageLights will perform Story Theatre at 7 p.m., Friday-Saturday July 13-14 at the Williamsburg Library Theatre. Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Jr., will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday-Saturday July 27-28 and at 2 p.m July 28 at the Williamsburg Library Theatre. Tickets are $8, children 2 years old and under are free. Tickets will go on sale in early July. They can be reserved by e-mailing stagelightstheatre@gmail.com or by calling 345-1326.

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features worldclass English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury Open The industrial site that helped forge the American Revolution is open to guests after more than a year of reconstruction. Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury reflects the beehive of activity present during the American Revolution, with numerous trades working together in support of the American war effort: blacksmiths forging and repairing hardware, tinsmiths fashioning all sorts of military accoutrements and other trades artisans repairing and rebuilding military arms while historic foodways interpreters recreate the meals the kitchen provided to Anderson’s diverse 40-strong work force. The 21st-century purpose of the blacksmith’s and armoury site is to convey this complex and diverse scene: to engage guests in the hustle and bustle of work; to impress upon them the daunting tasks confronting the fledgling republic as it took on the greatest military power in the world; and to convey some of the economic, political, and social factors that contributed to the eventual success of the war effort and the achievement of independence. The Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury project represents another step depicting Williamsburg’s leading role in the American Revolution — when former royal subjects took on new freedoms and responsibilities as self-governing citizens of an independent republic. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JULY 2012

Celebrate our country’s history with the musical “1776’ on stage at the Kimball Theatre opening June 27 for seven performances through July 3. The Tony-Award winning musical tells the story of the men who helped our nation declare independence. The story follows John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Richard Henry Lee and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia as they attempt to convince the members of the second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy. The show features the spirited music and lyrics of Sherman Edwards with a wonderfully funny script by Peter Stone. The story is based on actual events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence, focusing mainly on the efforts of John Adams to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence and sign the document. Through song and witty dialogue you will capture a behindthe-scenes glimpse of the process that resulted in our nation’s freedom. The set used in the performance is the same used by a recent production of “1776” at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington. Performances are June 27, 29, 30 and July 3 at 7:30 p.m. Matinees 2 p.m., June 30 and July 1. 8 p.m. performance July 1. General admission $22, Seniors, students and military are $20. Acting up with Shakespeare Steven Breese, who is directing “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” recently answered questions about his long history with the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. What are some of your past credits with The Virginia Shakespeare Festival? As an actor I’ve performed in The Tempest, Man for all Seasons, The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare Abridged, MacBeth, Art and Illyria. I have been the director of Romeo & Juliet and Much Ado about Nothing. What is it about the festival that keeps you coming back?? I support the mission of VSF and it’s a quality organization. Christopher Owens has created a supportive artistic environment where artists can create interesting theater in an environment where collaboration and risk is encouraged.

How will staging it be different in the smaller studio theater? Audiences are in for a rare treat—professional Shakespeare in a small environment. I will be adding some ‘interludes’ in between scenes to help tell the story and to bring the 1920s to life. What are the challenges/benefits of that space for a director? Being able to show all sides of characters helps define the nuances of story and action. I love directing in small environments, most directors do. continued on page 67

Photos courtesy Virginia Shakespeare Festival

Do you have a favorite production that you worked on with the festival? Like a lot of artists, I am most interested in the current project, so Two Gents has got me buzzing at the moment. But looking back, I think it would be dead heat between directing Much Ado about Nothing and acting in Art. What approach will you be taking with Two Gentlemen of Verona? We will be setting in the height of the Roaring 20s, 1926 to be exact. In ’26, Black Tuesday is still 3 years away and The Jazz Singer and talkies won’t debut for another year. Two Gents, like most of Shakespeare, requires clear class delineation and iconography. The 1920’s offers both of these elements. Also, the play, as written, is a bit fluffy—it needs clearer style, some danger and little sexiness to work in 2012. Again the ‘20s helps out in all of these areas. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JULY 2012

Chambrel of Williamsburg Chambrel of Williamsburg has been home to area seniors for the past 24 years. Currently 235 older adults live at the independent and assisted living community. People who call Chambrel home have varied backgrounds including retired executives and military personnel, former professors, nurses, school teachers and housewives. Chambrel has several distinguishing qualities. • Innovative Senior Care and home health nursing, all of which offer support to residents to remain independent and living in their homes at Chambrel. • Optimum Life programming covering the six dimensions of wellness. • Exemplary dining services. • Assisted living offers care for those with greater needs. • Month-to-month rentals and no buy-in fee, the range of services we provide is very unusual.

52

• A 57 acre campus with walking paths and outdoor pool that can be enjoyed by residents and their families. • 24 hour fitness center with full time fitness coordinator who provides exercise opportunities that are both interesting and engaging for everyone. • A low floor bus that has a ramp that extends to meet the curb. This allows less mobile residents to be able to safely access some activities outside the community. • Lincoln Town Car complete with chauffeur takes residents, free of charge, to personal or professional appointments. • On-site, non-denominational chapel. Many local church leaders come to Chambrel to provide spiritual nourishment for residents. The bus travels to many local churches each Sunday so that those who prefer to worship in a traditional church are able to do so long after they no longer drive.
