Customer care Superior customer service. That’s the aspect of Hudgins Holiday Chevrolet Cadillac that owner Art Hudgins believes distinguishes the dealership. “We are all about making it easy for a customer to do business with us,” Hudgins said in a recent interview. “And sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference to the customer.” The dealership opened in 1982, recently celebrating the 30-year milestone. Hudgins father, John Hudgins started the business. Years later, Art joined his dad, followed by Art’s brother, Michael. Today, Art’s daughter, Aris, is preparing to walk in her father and grandfather’s footsteps. According to Hudgins, the business is more than selling a vehicle. Offering the best quality cars is important, but of equal value is it is providing people with personalized care. “It is about getting a good value for what you buy,” he said. “And the real value is the people. People make the difference.” The dealership strives to be a “one-stop shop” for customers. Over the years the service department has tripled in size, offerings a full scope of service for the vehicles including tires, collision and routine maintenance. The dealership offers Enterprise rental cars on site for those who may need a car to drive while theirs is in the shop. “We are here to take care of all of our customer’s service needs,” he said. The dealership offers a large inventory of new Chevrolets and Cadillacs and a wide selection of used cars. The dealership offers free Virginia state inspections to anyone, regardless of where they purchased their car. Hudgins believes supporting local charities. The dealership supports 6
Grove Christian Outreach, Meals on Wheels and Olde Towne Medical Center. “We are big on trying to give back to the community.” More –– The dealership is located at 543 Second Street. Visit holidaychevroletcadillac.com for more information. –Ann Efimetz

Great restaurants
Three Merchants Square eateries offer diverse, delicious fare Merchants Square features three restaurants owned by David Everett. The Blue Talon Bistro opened in September of 2004. The restaurant features traditional favorites including mussels, pate, escargots and rotisserie chicken. There’s also a variety of American dishes including meatloaf, mac & cheese and hamburgers. The combination of French cuisine and American comfort food offered in a casual and relaxed environment differentiates the restaurant. Next month the three restaurants will team up for the Occasion for Beer & Wine, which occurs in conjunction with An Occasion for the Arts. Folks can sample outstanding beers and wines, talk to the brewers, winemakers and importers and enjoy their favorite beverages. On Thanksgiving Day, the restaurant will again host the annual Blue Talon Turkey Trot which raises money for Meals on Wheels. The DOG Street Pub opened in June and provides “casual cuisine with an English accent.” It is termed a “gastropub” which is defined as a bar and restaurant that serves quality food and beer without pretension. The menu’s inspiration is rooted in English pub fare including Fish & Chips, Scotch Eggs and Cottage Pie. Speciality ingredients are imported from 8
England including back-bacon for burgers. The pub offers a dynamic selection of beers, both draft and bottle, featuring excellent domestic craft beer and hard to find imports. The decor of the building maintains its history. Many features of the 80-year-old bank building, which has been renovated, remain including the wrought iron gate, marble floor and classic color scheme. The pub ha a separate Tavern Room that can seat up to 50 guests for private functions and host standing functions for up to 72 people. The Trellis Restaurant is at the forefront of modern American dining. With a focus on local, responsibly raised products and small scale, artisan farmers, the menu brings the very best of the region to the table with outstanding flavors and beautiful presentation in an upbeat casual atmosphere. The bar offers a wide range of American liquors picked out personally by beverage manager John Morris boasting one of the largest bourbon lists in the state of Virginia. The wine lists consists of over 200 bottles of American wines. For the second year in a row The Trellis resPhotos by Ann Efimetz taurant has been awarded Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for offering one of the most outstanding wine lists in the world. –Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, SEPTEMBER 2012

Artisia Green W&M professor, director Theatre professor Artisia Green of the College of William & Mary finished working on the successful “Ruined” last spring and is currently directing “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.” She answered some questions regarding her work. In what part of the country were you living before you began teaching at W&M in 2010? I was teaching at Chicago State University and commuting weekly to Purdue University as an artist in residence in the Black Cultural Center. As an alumnus of W&M, what is like transitioning from student to professor? I have been teaching college since 2004 but I think in some ways I will forever be a student. Professor is only a title that may lead some to inaccurately assume that I am the only one in the room with the knowledge. However, I think learning is a shared experience that should be facilitated by me but also involve the efforts of the entire classroom.
viewed by others. The best part of this work, for me, is the conception of the idea as that is the most consistent part. How did “Ruined” come together so successfully? Through the efforts of multiple people. The process involved early conversation with available designers, significant dramaturgical research, table work with the actors, characterization, dance, stage fight and vocal workshops and many, many complete run-throughs very early and throughout the process. How are you approaching Joe Turner? What drew you to that script? The play deals with the cultural fragmentation of black Americans at the turn of the 20th century and their search for an identity. I am approaching the play from a magically realistic point of view. I am looking to explore the ways in which to reveal memory and spirit in the every day experiPhoto by Ann Efimetz ences of the characters as all of the characters, but most particularly Harold Loomis, the central figure in the play, are looking to and outside of themselves for that which is already within them and has been even through their disconnection from their culture.
What is it about teaching that you enjoy most? The joy I experience when I see how the course content has opened their eyes to new ways of looking at and experiencing the world. It’s like Christmas. What about directing? Directing is another form of teaching but for a larger audience and with more exposed vulnerability on part of the director simply because you are opening a piece of yourself when your work is 10
What are your future goals? Is there a particular play you would love to direct? I have been invited to direct “Hoodoo Love” by Katori Hall at ETA Creative Arts Foundation in Chicago next spring. I would love to tackle her play, “The Mountaintop,” especially. I would also like to try my hand at another musical. But regardless of what play I choose to build a relationship with, it must have social relevance. –Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, SEPTEMBER 2012

Positive results The decision for Discover Teas to advertise with the Williamsburg Magazine was an easy one! Knowing that our ad would be widely seen by the local market as well as visitors, it just made sense. Budgeting for only one print ad our ďŹ rst quarter, we needed the biggest bang for our buck. And we got it! Our Grand Opening was a huge success, and we continue to see a steady ow of residents and visitors walk through our doors ready to Discover Teas. -Chris Farishon & Kenneth Roberts of Discover Teas

The last days of summer occur this month. The First Day of Autumn (Autumnal Equinox) is on Saturday, Sept. 22. But there is still some summer fun to be had during the last days of the season. The Williamsburg Farmers Market has been celebrating its 10 year anniversary this season. Locally grown produce, food samples great music music await each Saturday 8 a.m.-noon in Merchants Square. Yorktown Market Days at the River continue 8 a.m.-noon through Sept. 15. It’s a great opportunity to purchase fresh produce and other unique items. For those who love the outdoors, there are wonders to be found in our local parks. Williamsburg, James City County and York County all have parks that offer chances to get out on the water and to hike on lovely trails. And don’t forget the James and York Rivers. These are great places for families to enjoy. There are various beach areas along the Colonial Parkway where you can park. It’s especially nice in the evening after the sun has gone down. Families can walk, play Frisbee or other games along the river fronts. The rivers are great place for kids to wade and collect shells. People also love to bring their dogs to the waterfront for a swim. –Ann Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features worldclass English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury Open The industrial site that helped forge the American Revolution is open to guests after more than a year of reconstruction. Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury reflects the beehive of activity present during the American Revolution, with numerous trades working together in support of the American war effort: blacksmiths forging and repairing hardware, tinsmiths fashioning all sorts of military accoutrements and other trades artisans repairing and rebuilding military arms while historic foodways interpreters recreate the meals the kitchen provided to Anderson’s diverse 40-strong work force. The 21st-century purpose of the blacksmith’s and armoury site is to convey this complex and diverse scene: to engage guests in the hustle and bustle of work; to impress upon them the daunting tasks confronting the fledgling republic as it took on the greatest military power in the world; and to convey some of the economic, political, and social factors that contributed to the eventual success of the war effort and the achievement of independence. The Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury project represents another step depicting Williamsburg’s leading role in the American Revolution — when former royal subjects took on new freedoms and responsibilities as self-governing citizens of an independent republic. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc.
Nail Concepts
If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine.

50 years of help The Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center’s Auxiliary is comprised of a busy group of men and women who are involved in a variety of programs designed to help the community. The auxiliary was established in 1962 and has grown to nearly 300 members. One charter member, Jean Cogle, has been an active member for 50 years and is the current auxiliary historian. A 50th anniversary celebration is planned for Sept. 12 at Kingsmill and will feature a grand party to recognize the work done by the volunteers over the years. “We are very proud of our auxiliary,” said auxiliary president Louise Lippert. She joined the auxiliary in 2007
and has worked in various capacities, including regular shifts at the Pineapple Gift Shop. The store, located in the hospital lobby, provides gifts and products for visitors and employees. Lippert is in her final term as president and said she is honored to direct the auxiliary through its Golden Anniversary year. “From the start, I have been overwhelmed by the number of ways the auxiliary helps the hospital and the community from large to small,” she said. Over the years, some of the programs of the auxiliary have included: Free mammogram and bone density tests. Founded by Gert Berthiaume, the program has provided
free testing for the uninsured in our community since 1998. The program has been lauded locally and nationally. Hospital departments funding. Regularly funds equipment requests including furnishings for the hospital’s chapel, creation of the Healing Garden and the purchase of a Bioness L300 device for rehabilitation patients. Scholarships. Supports young people planning to pursue healthcare careers through annual scholarships awarded to local high school seniors. Assist Program. A Special Service Involving Stricken Travelers Program is the auxiliary’s commitment to the public. When tourists or visitors are hospitalized, volunteers arrange for transportation, assistance in obtaining accommodations for family members, and other support for the individuals and family members. Pineapple Knitters and Baby Hatters. Provide hand-knit “chemo caps” for cancer patients and hand knit lap throws for dialysis patients. Knit caps for newborns are also available for babies to wear home made by the Baby Hatters. Hot Diggity Dog Dinner with Santa. Holiday event for children of hospital personnel provided by auxiliary volunteers. Pediatric gift bags. Serve children (under 8) who come into the hospital for an emergency and stay the night in the short stay unit. Rembrance bricks. Placed around the labyrinth in the community garden to remember/honor loved ones. The group continues to introduce ways to help those in need. “The auxiliary is always planning new things,” she said. “I have liked being part of that.” –Ann Efimetz

New guidebook offered Unlike your typical guidebook, Colonial Williamsburg’s new pocket guide won’t help you navigate America’s geography. It’s meant to help navigate the landscape of ideas that formed the country. “America, The Pocket Guide” lays out the values that Americans share and how the conflict between those values illuminates our history. In 40 pages, the little red book is meant to illustrate “The Idea of America,” a curriculum that Colonial Williamsburg has developed to teach American history to high school students through 65 case studies spanning four centuries. The pocket guide takes on four clashes between contending American values: • Law and ethics. • Unity and diversity. • Common wealth vs. private. • Freedom and equality. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, SEPTEMBER 2012
It’s a fundamental tenant of “The Idea of America” that the tension between these values is hardly new and has always run across American history. Prohibition is cited as an example of conflict between ethics and law, when trying legislate the ethical behavior of temperance failed, instead leading to increased lawlessness. The conflict between law and ethics and between freedom and equality can be traced in the history of the movement for civil rights for African Americans from the Dred Scott decision to Plessy
v. Ferguson to Brown v. Board of Education to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and beyond. Issues pitting the common wealth vs. private wealth also have a long history in America. We are all, through taxes, required to contribute to the common wealth. Yet government at every level seeks to make it easy for private wealth to thrive. Battles over tariff rates and public infrastructure, from the early canals to interstate highways, illustrate that tension.’ “Idea of America” and the pocket guide are extensions of Colonial Williamsburg’s “Education for Citizenship” philosophy. More - The booklet is available for $1.95 at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center or at Everything Williamsburg in Merchants Square. –Steve Vaughan 69
