Like vintage cars? Wine? Well then the Williamsburg Winery will be the place to be for a singular event at the end of the month. The Williamsburg Winery will host “Ferraris on the Vine,” Friday, April 30–Sunday, May 2. This year The Williamsburg Winery resurrects the 1964 Pontiac GTO vs. Ferrari GTO debate. There will be a rematch between the two classic cars, May 1. It promises to be a unique experience. Editor and publisher of Car & Driver Magazine at that time (1964) was David E. Davis, Jr. He’ll be at the event, along with driving legend Dan Gurney and Jim Wangers, who hatched the idea of the original competition. The Ferraris will begin to roll into town Friday, and owners will be greeted with an intimate dinner at Cafe Provencal at Wedmore Place. Saturday begins with a police-escorted driving tour to Yorktown, and back through Williamsburg to Colonial Heritage. Then it will be on to the racecourse, where the original Pontiac GTO will take on a re-created Ferrari 250 GTO. On Sunday, the public is invited to attend the Ferrari Exhibition and Wine Pairing Lunch that will feature live music, great food and wine. More than 50 Ferraris and 750 spectators are expected at the height of the weekend. A portion of the ticket sales will go to Dreamcatchers Therapeutic Riding Center, which assists special needs children and adults. Here’s a rundown of events: Friday, April 30 • Registration 3-7 p.m., Wedmore Place Lobby. Welcome Dinner, 7:30 p.m., hosted by The Williamsburg Winery proprietor Patrick Duffeler. Saturday, May 1 • Registration, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Wedmore Place lobby. WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

First Baptist Church author a book, “Frederick Douglass,” which takes another look at the legendary man’s religious odyssey. It is available on online booksellers including Amazon.com. The history of First Baptist continues in the present with its history ministry, which provides tours, museum presentations and black history programs. The tour ministry has helped to educate hundreds of people on how First Baptist got its start, where it was once located, and how God blessed the congregation to move to the location where it is now. Davis added that over the years Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Governor Douglas L. Wilder and Rev. Jesse Jackson and others have visited the church. Davis said the future of the church depends on making a shift from old worn out strategies to new and effective ones. “We must find more effective ways of reaching out to new people, especially young people and bringing them in and training them, equipping them, and allowing them to become the next generation of First Baptist church,” he said.
First Baptist Church on Scotland Street is steeped in history. The genesis of the church dates to the 1700s when a group of courageous slaves and free black worshipers wanted to worship God in their own way. The current church on Scotland Street has served as the congregation’s home since 1956. The Rev. Dr. Reginald Davis has been pastor since 2004. He has set several goals for himself and the church, which he continually works toward actualizing. In addition to growing the church in membership and discipleship, he has a special wish for the church’s youth. “I want to help young people to reach for the stars and become the Moses and Joshuas of their generation,” Davis said recently. “And I would like to motivate the church to become relevant for the 21st century by finding effective ways to serve the homeless, the hungry, the troubled, the beaten, the helpless and the downtrodden.” Those are the people, Davis said, who Jesus ministered to. Those people were the ones who became the “spiritual revolution of the Kingdom of God.” “In a nutshell, I want First Baptist to be a serving church, standing up for justice, speaking out against wrong, evil, and injustice and engaging in activities that conquer and transform our society and nation,” Davis said. “We cannot do this in the church sanctuary. Our mandate is not in the building but out there in the world.” During his tenure, Davis has become an active member of the local clergy community, often joining other pastors and church leaders for special community-wide programs. “That is very important to my ministry,” he said. “No one church or pastor can conquer the world for Christ. No one church or pastor can transform a community. Each soldier for Christ needs reinforcement to get the job done for the Kingdom of God.” During his tenure, Davis has also had time to

EMILY KINKEAD Age: 18 Grade: Senior at Hampton Roads Academy Service: Volunteers at Avalon, A Center for Women and Children
Emily Kinkead During fall, she spent up to five hours a week with the kids, enjoying every minute. “I love feeling like I have had at least a small, positive impact on these children’s lives,” she said. “Seeing them grow in self-confidence makes me smile.” Next fall, Kinkead will head to college, but plans to continue her work at the shelter until she leaves Williamsburg in August. The work she did at Avalon and the positive results of her endeavors will stay with her well into the future. “My experience with Avalon will not be forgotten,” she said. “I will seek volunteer opportunities at women’s shelters wherever I go in life.”
Emily Kinkead first learned about volunteer opportunities at Avalon: A Center for Women and Children through the Girl Scouts. Kinkead wanted to help children and thought that the shelter would be a good match for her efforts. Last summer, she began formulating ideas about how to begin an art program for the kids at the shelter. “I researched age-appropriate craft projects, purchased materials and then we began creating,” Kinkead said. “The biggest hits have been Model Magic sculptures, collages and Valentine making.”

Mary Eason Fletcher Earlier in her career, she met and formed a professional relationship with internationally renowned Juilliard voice professor Daniel Ferro. He has visited W&M several times, giving master classes in 2006 and 2008. Some of her students have had the option to further their studies with Ferro, including J.D. Webster, who graduated in 1990. Webster has sung on Broadway in “Showboat,” “Ragtime,” “Wonderful Town” and “Finian’s Rainbow.” In the past, Fletcher served as director of applied music at the college. Currently, her focus is on individualized teaching, as she instructs some 50 students each semester. “The ability of the students runs the gamut, from total beginners to highly-skilled,” Fletcher said. Whatever the reason they find themselves in her studio, they can be assured of her expert advice, education and direction. “I am privileged to do what I enjoy doing most, every day of my life,” she said. “And that is a real gift.”
Mary Eason Fletcher, lecturer in music and instructor of voice at the College of William & Mary, had an exceptional holiday surprise last December. David Lai, of Sony Masterworks in New York City, contacted Fletcher about providing voice lessons for Ron Henry, one of the singers who would be recording “4Troops,” a new group on the Masterworks label. The “4Troops” CD, which features Virginia resident Henry, is a new music collection that supports and honors the troops through song. A portion of the proceeds from the CD will benefit charities that support veterans. The CD will be released this month. The unexpected call delighted Fletcher. “I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to make a contribution to this project,” Fletcher said. “It is the most exciting thing that ever happened to me, a real holiday surprise.” Fletcher noted that Lai’s selection of W&M was an honor, as he could have chosen any school to help. Lai’s only stipulation was that the work with Henry be done expeditiously, as the project was on a “very fast track.” “With less than four weeks until the recording, and with Ron in New York some of the time, our work had to be compressed into five or six sessions,” Fletcher recalled. The experience working with Henry was extremely positive. “He is an engaging, magnetic performer, with a world-class voice,” Fletcher said. “And he is a man of strong personal faith and ethic. I feel truly privileged to have met him. Seeing Ron on television now, and hearing him on the CD, I feel happy that I could make a small difference in his skill as a performer.” Fletcher approached Henry the same way she approaches all students who seek her help in achieving goals. “Each person, each singer is equally important, whether preparing for a Broadway audition or fulfilling a general education requirement,” she said. Fletcher’s preparation has helped dozens of singers succeed in professional venues after leaving W&M. Some have gone on to New York to perform opera and musical theatre in the city and with regional companies. WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

4TROOPS Ron Henry, one of the vocalists on the soon-to-be released CD, “4Troops,” sought musical advice from Mary Fletcher at William & Mary. Henry and Fletcher had about six sessions to better prepare him for recording on the project. He credits her with helping him to reach new heights vocally. “She opened my eyes to another avenue for my vocals and I am so grateful for her help,” Henry said recently. Fletcher and Henry worked primarily on various vocal nuances to help Henry’s voice work at its highest potential. “She helped me work on breathing, how to better project notes and have better techniques,” he said. “And that was just phenomenal.” Fletcher photo by Ann Efimetz

Colonial „ America’s only 18th-century coffeehouse now open R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse, the Historic Area’s newest exhibition building, is the site of The Revolutionary City’s newest scene, “The Next Disagreeable Thing, the Stamp Crisis and the Ball of Revolution,” 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout April. In 1765, one of the most dramatic encounters of the period leading up to the American Revolution took place when an angry crowd protesting the hated Stamp Act confronted the appointed collector for Virginia, George Mercer, and demanded he swear an oath that he would not distribute the official stamped paper. The royal governor, Francis Fauquier, intervened and saved Mercer from the crowd. Mercer resigned his position the next day and the Stamp Act was repealed by the British Parliament the following year. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse is built on its original foundations with 18th-century construction techniques. The site in the Historic Area reflects its 18th-century role as a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious. Coffeehouse furnishings include carefully researched reproduction furniture, ceramics, glassware, hardware and other items representing the variety of activities that took place there. Reproduction maps, prints, advertisements and broadsides adorn the walls and period newspapers in the main rooms will contribute to the ambience. Hand-printed wallpapers cover the walls of the well-appointed private meeting room and the north room, both based on microscopic study of original building fragments. George Mercer (Todd Norris, seated) consulted with Guests entering R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse tour in Governor Fauquier (Bill Weldon, far left) and Council small groups and learn the significance of his members Gerry Underdown, Jeff Williams and Willie establishment before concluding the experience Balderson about his role as stamp distributor. with the opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Annual homes tour April 20 In celebration of Historic Garden Week, the Williamsburg Garden Club will host the annual Home and Garden Tour 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Tuesday April 20. There are several historic homes, private residences and gardens to enjoy during the event. Properties may be visited in any order. Ewing House Complex –– 338 East Francis Street. On the interior, some of the woodwork— including the stairs, several doors and the flooring— survives from the 18th century. Nelson-Galt House –– 425 East Francis Street. Built soon after 1695, the Nelson-Galt House is believed to be Williamsburg’s oldest residence still standing in use. Despite later additions, the original part of the house has been altered little since the late-18th century and needed only repairs rather than extensive restoration when incorporated into Colonial Williamsburg. Newport House Garden and Ballroom –– 710 South Henry Street. Newport House is furnished in period English and American antiques and reproductions. The commanding central stairway leads to a 40foot ballroom, where Colonial and Scottish dancing groups met. The garden, designed and tended by the homeowners, is a certified Wildlife Habitat and includes herbaceous borders, flowering hedgerows and unusual tree specimens. Escorted Walking Tour –– An escorted walking tour of gardens near Palace Green will originate at WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, APRIL 2010
The Mattey’s Garden, a large children’s garden next to the Matthew Whaley School created as a learning science lab for the students. The Historic Area gardens featured on the tour include ornamental pleasure gardens with period annuals, perennials and shrubs. The gardens on tour are at the following sites: St. George Tucker, Thomas Everard and John Custis. Tours begin at 10 a.m. and depart approximately every 15 minutes, each lasting 45 minutes. The final tour departs at 3 p.m. The tour also features residences in The Coves and Richmond Hill, both nearby to Colonial Williamsburg. Donaldson Home –– 149 Ridings Cove. It is open for the first time by owners Sue and John Donaldson. Hougland Home ––145 Hunting Cove. It is opened for the first time by homeowners Wright B. “Chips” and Sarah Houghland. Corson Home ––125 Richmond Hill. Open for the first time for Historic Garden Week by David and Jeanne Corson. Krochmal Garden ––128 Richmond Hill Court. Open by owners Bonnie and Glenn Krochmal. Other places of interest: Bruton Parish Church –– Duke of Gloucester and Palace Green. On display in St. Mary’s Chapel at Bruton Parish House, one block west of the Church, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., are 17th century Jamestown Communion Silver and the newly restored Prayer Book used at Bruton in the 18th century. Adams Garden –– corner of Richmond Road and North Boundary St. The Adams Garden will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on tour day.

“In your Easter bonnet with all the frills upon it, you’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade. I’ll be all in clover, and when they look you over I’ll be the proudest fellow in the Easter parade.”
––Compiled by Ann Efimetz
APRIL
Ok, so we don’t have an Easter parade locally, but that song, written by Irving Berlin, is a standard springtime tune. Locally April brings warmer days, beautiful blooming tulips, daffodils and dogwoods. Easter this year is Sunday, April 4. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and allow kids and adults to dress up in their “Easter finery.” There are many other fun days throughout April worth celebrating. The month begins with April Fool’s Day, which this year falls on Thursday. What’s up your sleeve for trick playing on family and friends? Did you know that April is National Frog Month, National Kite Month, National Soy Foods Month and National Straw Hat Month? It is. The website, www.brownielocks.com offers several off-beat observances to celebrate during the month.

Art on the Square Event scheduled for April 25 The 47th annual “Art on the Square” is scheduled 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Sunday, April 25 in Merchants Square, Duke of Gloucester and Boundary Streets. It will be held rain or shine. The event is sponsored by the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg. Like An Occasion for the Arts heralds fall, Art on the Square is one of the area’s signature spring events. More than 160 artists are expected to participate in the popular art show. Some 250 people apply to be an exhibiting artist each year. Art in various media will be available for purchase. Thousands of people are expected to attend the show, especially if the weather cooperates. This year’s poster art, “Fetch a Pail of Water,” marks the 12th year that local artist, Richard DePaul has donated an original watercolor to the Junior Woman’s Club to support their fundraising efforts. “Since the annual Art on the Square show is held in April, I typically select a spring theme WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM
that highlights either one of Williamsburg’s architectural gems or a more intimate garden scene,” DePaul explained in a press release. Proceeds from the sales of raffle tickets for the original work and poster sales the day of the show provide art scholarships for graduating high school seniors who have been accepted into a college level visual or performing arts program.
The original watercolor painting and three framed prints will be raffled off the day of the show and will be on display at the JWCW registration tent. Raffle tickets may be purchased for $2 each or three for $5, also at the registration tent.
