Experience Ocean Palm

Ocean Palm, located in Merchants Square, has been in business since 2004. There is also a store in La Promenade shops in Virginia Beach. The store carries the full Lilly Pulitzer Resort Chic line. To complement the line, Ocean Palm offers Jack Rogers and Eliza B sandals, made in the U.S.A. Another addition to Lilly is Mahi Gold, an organic cotton also made in America. Ocean Palm offers a variety of unique jewelry along with Lifeguard Press gifts and stationary. During summer, the store carries the Vineyard Vine line. There is also a sorority line featuring totes, scarves, and Greek letter stickers. “A huge seller is the Lilly Pulitzer agenda which is an eighteen month calendar in a variety of popular

Lilly prints,” said owner Janet LaneRoberts. Our customers range from newborn to 80plus. Lilly is multi generational.” Roberts admitted that the vibrant colors of Lilly Pulitzer make it most popular in summer. However, this autumn, there is a new eye-catching line. “The fall the line is amazing with many puffer vests, fleece jackets and colored denim jeans,” Roberts said. “Lilly has now grown to a year round business. Last year the Murfee scarf was our number one seller.” Online shop at www.oceanpalm.net –Ann Efimetz

A chance to see unique quilts Some of the nation’s most treasured quilts were produced around the middle of the 19th century influenced by quiltmaking in the nation’s third largest city of the time, Baltimore. A dozen of these works of art most created in a distinctive and elaborately conceived appliqued style known as album quilts are the focus of a continuing exhibition at Colonial Williamsburg’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. “Quilts in the Baltimore Manner” will be on exhibit through April 2014. It reflects the strong textile industry and innovative quiltmaking styles of America’s largest seaport of the period 1845 to 1855. Religious movements and social organizations created environments within the city and nearby counties that made it easy to share quilt designs and labor. “At least one if not several enterprising Baltimore women sold prefabricated quilt blocks,” said Linda Baumgarten, Colonial Williamsburg curator of textiles, who co-curated the exhibition. “That’s significant because it combines traditional quilt making with the new era of commercialism and work force specialization.” Album quilts usually a cooperative effort composed of individual signed and inscribed blocks

contributed by as many as ten or more women were often intended for an honored recipient within a community, perhaps a bride or a minister. The quilts are tangible evidence of social and kinship networks as records of friends and family connections. Many Baltimore album quilts also were made as gifts for men, revealing organizational affiliations including Freemasonry and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Still others are associated with individual makers who made the quilts for personal family use. Appliqued wreaths, baskets and urns were popular designs for the skillfully created blocks. Some of the album quilts made in Baltimore and adjacent counties feature more complex blocks of architectural motifs representing monuments and buildings found in Baltimore and nearby Washington. Because some of the block motifs are similar, in some cases identical, it is believed that one or more enterprising women created prefabricated cutout applique designs for sale. Replaced by new fads, the album quilt fashion passed as Baltimore’s prosperity came to a standstill with the worldwide financial “Panic of 1857,” the rise of anti-immigration sentiments and the national divide over the question of slavery.

Golf tournament tees off again Return of LPGA Tour in September For seven years, Kingsmill’s River Course was considered a jewel of the LPGA Tour as host of the Michelob Ultra Open. All that changed in 2009 when Belgian brewer InBev bought Anheuser-Busch for $52 billion in 2008. A year later, Anehuer-Busch InBev officials elected not to renew the contract. New hope emerged three years later as Xanterra Parks and Resorts bought the Kingsmill Resort. The new owners quickly gained popularity with locals by signing a new deal with the LPGA Tour to bring pro golf back to greater Williamsburg. “We’re really excited,” said tournament director Wayne Nooe. “Golf has meant so much to Kingsmill as it develops as a resort. We feel real good that everyone seemed to want it back. The reaction that we got from the community are real excited about it.” The Kingsmill Championships will mark its return to the LPGA Tour Sept. 6-9. The tournament will move to the more desirable spring date for the remainder of the contract. The 2013 event will be moved to May, the week before Mother’s Day. “It’s a two-year agreement with an option for a third year,” Nooe explained. “Xanterra has agreed to serve as the title sponsors, if we’re not able to secure another one.” Xanterra is owned by the Anschultz Entertainment Group, a sports and entertainment company that is the world’s largest owner of sports teams. The own and operate The Staples Center, home to the National baseball Association’s Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers and the Stanley Cup champions Los Angeles Kings.”They are hoping to use their relationships and contacts to find a title sponsor.” Pro golf has proven to be profitable in the area. Nooe said the Michelob Ultra Open averaged about 60,000 spectators per year and contributed about $250,000 a year to local charities. According

to the LPGA, on average, a tournament brings in about $6.5 million for the week to that community through hotel rooms and ticket sales. In addition, this year’s event will feature 11 hours of national television coverage on ESPN, which is broadcast into millions or homes around the word. ”Obviously, that brings a good bit of business into Williamsburg,” Nooe said. “It brings exposure and awareness to Williamsb burg, James City County and Hampton Roads. During the ttelecast, they’re always talking about things to do in the area, so that’s almost 11 hours of marketing.” Although a list of player commitments haven’t been announced, Nooe said players Photo courtesy LPGA h have voiced their excitement ffor the event. Tournament officials plan to make an official announcement in the middle of July. “We’ve had some contact with (2009 champion) Cristie [Kerr] and they’re all excited,” Nooe said. “They know Kingsmill and Williamsburg will show them a good time. The fact that we’re a resort destination, players have a tendency to bring their families.” The $1.3 million purse is expected to attract LPGA stars like Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis, Michelle Wie and Ai Miyazato. “I think we’ll have a strong field,” Nooe said. “The previous event was successful and the players enjoyed it. They always talked about the friendliness and the hospitality of Kingsmill.” Want to go? Tickets for the Kingsmill Championship start at 25 for Good-Any-Day Grounds and $34 clubhouse tickets. Weekly badges are also available for all five days of play, along with a complimentary greens fee on the River, Plantation or Woods Course. Children 17 & Under are admitted free when accompanied by a ticketed adult. Visit thekingsmillchampionship.com for more info. –John Harvey

Positive results The decision for Discover Teas to advertise with the Williamsburg Magazine was an easy one! Knowing that our ad would be widely seen by the local market as well as visitors, it just made sense. Budgeting for only one print ad our ďŹ rst quarter, we needed the biggest bang for our buck. And we got it! Our Grand Opening was a huge success, and we continue to see a steady ow of residents and visitors walk through our doors ready to Discover Teas. DPA677714

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features worldclass English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury Open The industrial site that helped forge the American Revolution is open to guests after more than a year of reconstruction. Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury reflects the beehive of activity present during the American Revolution, with numerous trades working together in support of the American war effort: blacksmiths forging and repairing hardware, tinsmiths fashioning all sorts of military accoutrements and other trades artisans repairing and rebuilding military arms while historic foodways interpreters recreate the meals the kitchen provided to Anderson’s diverse 40-strong work force. The 21st-century purpose of the blacksmith’s and armoury site is to convey this complex and diverse scene: to engage guests in the hustle and bustle of work; to impress upon them the daunting tasks confronting the fledgling republic as it took on the greatest military power in the world; and to convey some of the economic, political, and social factors that contributed to the eventual success of the war effort and the achievement of independence. The Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury project represents another step depicting Williamsburg’s leading role in the American Revolution — when former royal subjects took on new freedoms and responsibilities as self-governing citizens of an independent republic. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

retiring in williamsburg

Retirement Mecca A couple years ago, CNN’s “Money Magazine” named Williamsburg among its 25 best places to retire across the country. Our area boasts a variety of qualities that make it a desirable place to spend later adult years including a diverse cultural environment, temperate weather, small town ambiance, low crime, excellent golfing, outdoor recreation and access to good medical care.

Those who retire here can take advantage of a variety of volunteer opportunities and chances to continue education. There are several active adult communities and retirement facilities geared toward the specific needs and desires of residents. –Ann Efimetz

Taste of the sea at Berret’s & Riverwalk Berret’s Seafood Restaurant & Raw Bar has been providing locals and visitors with delicious fare for nearly 30 years. Berret’s specializes in fresh, regional seafood. The goal is to provide the best quality seafood despite changing conditions in the Chesapeake Bay and offshore waters. “Fortunately, we have long-standing relationships with many local oystermen, crabbers, fishermen, and seafood companies that have allowed us to continue to offer quality seafood,” said Tom Austin, owner. “In addition to seafood, our menus change seasonally and include steaks, lamb, duck and local hams.” The availability of seafood changes with the seasons. “Spring migration of fish in local waters starts with shad roe, rockfish, sea trout, softshell crabs, flounder, hardshell crabs, and numerous other species, many who have left in the fall to follow bait fish into warmer waters,” he explained. Throughout the summer, Berret’s offers rockfish, flounder, softshell and hardshell crabs. “Summer also brings larger quantities of offshore game fish like tuna, mahi-mahi and grouper,” he said. “In the fall and winter, this migration reverses and fish head south once again. Winter seafood includes rockfish, flounder, and many of the offshore varieties.” Austin said the growth of aquaculture him to work with a number of local oyster growers, especially Tommy Leggett of Chessie Seafood that supplies quality oysters year-round. “The old saying “oysters are available only in months with an “r” “is a thing of the past,” he said. 64

This fall, Berret’s will again sponsor an Oyster Tasting event in cooperation with Tidewater Oyster Growers Association and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation offering oysters from the six primary regions of the bay, all with their very distinctive tastes. Berret’s Taphouse Grill is open April 1-October each year. The Taphouse Grill offers an casual, outdoor dining venue with a wide selection of local micro-brews, and a variety of menu choices. There’s also live entertainment. The location of the restaurant and the restaurant’s staff has made the restaurant a continued favorite. “Location and quality food are keys to the success of any restaurant. Most importantly for us has always been our employees,” Austin said. “It is their hospitality and culinary skills that make up the Berret’s family and result in Photo by Ann Efimetz the continued success of Berret’s.” The Riverwalk Restaurant in Yorktown is located on the shore of the York River and offers view of the York River, Chesapeake Bay, and Gloucester Point. Riverwalk Restaurant offers a traditional, waterfront menu including seafood, steaks and chicken. The High Tide Bar & Grill serves a casual menu on a large, outdoor patio. The Landing is Riverwalk’s private banquet room which can handle groups of up to 70 persons and caters to weddings, rehearsals, reunions and business meetings. –Ann Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, AUGUST 2012

The healing power of art Kathrine Parker started a Jail Art Program through This Century Art Gallery in 1998. She has recently retired from coordinating it and answered questions regarding her time with the program. Work from the Jail Art program will be on display at This Century Art Gallery beginning Aug. 28 How did the idea for the Jail Art program begin? It started back in 1998 with an inmate asking could we start an art class. The art class had humble beginnings with color pencils and copy paper to draw on and about six inmates who wanted to draw. Since then this program has developed into an amazing and very rewarding program. Why did you want to be involved? For me all programs are important for inmates as you never know when the light bulb moment will happen. I loved watching and encouraging each inmate as their pictures unfold. Art is so healing for the soul. How it has grown over the years? The program has over the years had several great people who have volunteered their time and skills to teach and encourage all the inmates that came involved with this program. This Century Art Gallery offers space each year in their gallery for the inmate’s work to be displayed.

Have you been surprised at the quality of work they have done? Not really, as most of the inmate population are people who use their hands for a living. They may not had ever thought about doing watercolor painting before they came to jail, however the skills just needed to be taught to them. Will the program continue now that you have retired? The officer who has replaced me is herself artistic, so I’m sure the program will continue. All I can say is what I said to the volunteers in my farewell speech in April at the volunteer dinner. “Everyone says that the replacement person will have a hard time walking in my shoes. Well I plan on taking my shoes with me so they will have to develop their own style as no one can walk my journey.” What is your hope for the program in the future? That the outreach program with the Century Art Gallery will continue and that the community goes and views the artwork each year at the gallery. This program can only continue like all programs at the jail with community volunteers and support.

What has been the most rewarding part of the program for you? Watching the development and wonder as each inmate realizes they do have talent. The shedding of old labels from their lives with each time they get a pat on the back and told that their painting is really very good. How do you think the program has benefited the inmates? It is good for their self esteem. It has given them a new tool to use with their time when released and a different view of their on lives and abilities. 68
