Best Of, continued Last month, we presented the winners in food categories in the Best of Williamsburg contest. Readers of the Virginia Gazette voted for their favorites during the annual contest, now held online. Here’s a list of the remaining winners. Furniture store Carolina Furniture finished in first place, followed by Williamsburg Wicker and Rattan in second and Williamsburg Furniture in third. Gift shop The Nautical Dog in New Town moved from third to the top spot this year. The Mole Hole again finished in second and last year’s winner, Paisley took third. Jewelry store Goodman & Sons Jewelers moved from third to first this year in the jewelry store category. Laney’s Diamonds & Jewelry finished second and Kingsmill Jewelers took third. Women’s fashions Binn’s in Merchants Square moved into first place, up from third last year. Belk finished in second, after last year’s top honor and Chico’s rounded out the category in third. Men’s fashions For men, Best Fashions again went to Belk for the fifth year. R. Bryant again took second place and Brooks Brothers finished in third. Barnes & Noble again finished first, Book Exchange took second and Books-A-Million rounded out the category in third. Auto dealer Hudgins Holiday moved into first, up from second last year. It was followed by Casey Toyota in second and last year’s winner Williamsburg Ford in third. Auto service Casey Toyota took first place, followed by American Pride in second and Williamsburg Honda rounding out the category in third. Antique store Williamsburg Antique Mall finished in first for the third straight year. Dovetail Antiques took second for the second year and Charlies’s Antiques took third. Art gallery/store New Town Art Gallery took top honors in the category. It was followed by Quirks of Art in High Street and This Century Art Gallery which won last year, in third. Visit the park York River State Park is one of our area’s best kept secrets. The park will be offering programs during February to introduce people to all the park has to offer and provide a way to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. “Getting To Know Us� will be held at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 5 and 12. It is an ideal way for those who may be new to the area, or who do not know about the park to take a guided tour. The park offers picnic shelters, playgrounds, boating access to the York River shoreline and lovely scenic vistas. The Great Backyard Bird Count will be held Feb. 17- 20. It provides a great opportunity for beginning and expert birders to enjoy and record the variety of birds. Those who are interested can take a self-guided tour where participants can take as little or as much time as they wish. A new wardrobe awaits Does your wardrobe need some zip and zing for spring? The Clothes Tree on Second Street may provide the fashion accents you need. The store, owned by JoAnne Satchell, offers a variety of consignment merchandise covering the spectrum from department store to top designers. Some 800 active consignors regularly bring merchandise to Satchell who carefully selects the best for her racks. “I do all the fashions, from A to Z,” Satchell said in a recent interview. “I have it all here. I take the things and make sure they are all in excellent condition. Some are brought in with the tags still on it.” On any given day shoppers may find a Louis Vuitton handbag for a fraction of what it may sell for at a boutique, or a pair of unique shoes or a fur coat. There is jewelry, shoes, accessories and an occasional piece of art or housewares that are available for sale. “Maybe you will find a dish or some little odds and ends that haven’t been used before that people have brought to me,” she said.
There are some regular customers who pop by the store several times per week to check new arrivals. “Sometimes they just come by to chat,” Satchell said. “I love meeting people and no one is a stranger to me. I love my consignors and I love my customers. Everyone is different and I love meeting new people.” Every Monday and Saturday Satchell holds a sidewalk sale. She puts out a selection of store merchandise which inevitably results in folks stopping by to see more. During February and March Satchell holds a winter clearance to make way for the lighter, sunnier items. There’s also a wide variety of African attire available at the store ideal for Black History Month during February. The clientele who frequent the store range in age “from the young to the younger,” she quipped. And what’s the most important aspect of their shopping experience? “That it is fun,” she said. – Ann Efimetz

Savor Williamsburg Want to get to know Williamsburg in a new way? Taste of Williamsburg is a newly formed company which offers culinary tours that include sampling restaurant fare coupled with a walking tour of area locations. Lance Zaal started the company last spring and it has become popular with locals and visitors. “I knew that there were culinary tours in other areas and I thought it would be great to take visitors and locals to different restaurants to sample a portion of food from each,” Zaal said in a recent interview. “We meet at a location and we talk about the area and do a walking tour at the same time. It is not just the restaurants, it is our area as well.” Zaal is a local resident, a graduate of the College of William & Mary and will also earn an MBA from the College this May. He is familiar with all the area offers and wants to share that with those looking for a different way to experience food and history. The tours offered are “New Town, New Tastes” and a “Colonial and College Adventure.” Usually the tour encompasses 4-6 restaurants. Up to 15 people can participate. “There are different options for those with different tastes,” he explained. “It depends on what you are looking for. We can also do custom tours.” Zaal said he is looking to diversify to include a candy and chocolate tour and also a tour encompassing Yorktown. “The tours are catching on,” he said. “For people who really appreciate food, it is catching on very well. If you enjoy food and a relaxing afternoon at a slow pace, this is for you.” 44
The tours can make great dates or provide people with a chance to meet new people. They are popular with groups of folks who want to celebrate a special occasion. “We have had a retired teachers association and a group of state social workers attend,” Zaal said. “The tours are popular for group outings. We have even had people order the tour as gift for their inlaws.”

Zaal said the company continually makes improvements and listens to the comments from the guests. Those who attend have provided positive feedback. “It is a great way to experience Williamsburg, and taste what Williamsburg has to offer,” he said. Good taste in every Season Seasons Restaurant & Tavern and Stephano’s Pizza and Subs located in Merchants Square offers visitors and locals with a variety of dining options. Noreen Graziano, general manager, recently answered some questions about the popular spot. How long has Seasons been in business? Seasons was opened in 1992. How did the idea for the restaurant get started? The name came from two different things, the seasons changing and the seasoning of food. The restaurant was developed and divided into different areas. Each area was to represent a manor house and different season. The great aspects of this is that each area is able to accompany different size groups. What do people respond to about the restaurant? Guests tend to respond to the different areas and uniqueness.
They like the casual elegance. We have a great Happy Hour in the bar every day and in the dining room Monday through Thursday. We get a lot of regulars for this. What is it that you enjoy most about your job at the restaurant? I love the customer interaction and how it changes each day. I love the fact that we have two restaurants under one roofSeasons and Stephano’s Pizza and Subs. It’s really enjoyable to see how fascinated people are with the area. What are your goals in providing people with a positive experience? Keeping your staff informed of what is going on in restaurant and in the area always results in a positive experience for the guest. Guests want to see smiling, happy faces and they want the employees to interact with them. The guest wants to hear their story
especially if they’re students. You also have to be providing a good, fresh product the guest is going to enjoy. What are some of the comments you receive from guests? Guests usually comment on how friendly the staff is. Over the holidays, many people commented, “this was the best place they’ve eaten since they’ve been in Williamsburg.” Do you have any goals to expand/change in the future? We are updating and changing our menus and wine lists on a regular basis in the restaurant. We have daily specials and features. We’re always trying to stay ahead of the game and keep the staff and guests informed. – Ann Efimetz

The art of winter The winter can offer the ideal time to spend some time at area art galleries. There are many places to see and buy art. During the colder months, gallery hopping can provide a nice cultural distraction. Here are some to take in: New Town Art Gallery showcases original works by local Williamsburg and Virginia artists. This Century Art Gallery located on N. Boundary Street offers various exhibitions throughout the year. The annual High School Student Juried Art Show closes Feb. 4. The upstairs gallery will feature “Fantasy and Whimsy” Muscarelle Museum of Art located at Lamberson Hall on the campus of The College of William & Mary offers visiting exhibitions and the museum’s own collection. The Art-cade Gallery in the Williamsburg Office Park on Jamestown Road features original illustrations and signed limited edition reproductions. The gallery has a European salon flavor and represents premier American artists. Prince George Art & Frame features local, original art in town and has changing shows by guest artists. The gallery represents artists who create works in a variety of mediums and styles from traditional watercolors, contemporary scenes and abstracts in oil, acrylics and water media. Williamsburg Fine Art, located in the Gallery Shops in Lightfoot, offers quality custom framing and original art. And don’t forget the galleries and museums of Colonial Williamsburg including the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and Abby Aldrich Folk Art Museum. The winter is a great time to see all they have to offer. THROUGH SEPT. 3 Declarations of Independence Exhibition features five copies of the famous document printed in anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Printers competed to produce copies that would allow every household to own a copy. In 1823, an official version was created by William Stone and presented to the remaining signers of the original Declaration as well as many government officials.
