Taste the difference at Edwards Your senses will come alive when you walk into the Edwards Ham Shoppe on Richmond Road. The smell of country ham wafts through the air. Colorful and whimsical pigs stand in greeting and delectable samples from the deli counter are offered to savor. The meat products are prepared in true Virginia tradition, cured and smoked in the Edwards facility in Surry. They are available for purchase or to taste in a variety of homemade sandwiches. “Virginia offers the right environment to produce the best tasting hams, we think the best tasting hams in the world,” said Sam Edwards III. “We have sold to restaurants and stores in the Virginia area for 86 years and have expanded our market across the country.” Many of the meat products are awardwinning and are used by fine restaurants throughout the U.S. Locally, Old Chickahominy House is Edwards’s oldest customer, using their products Photos by Ann Efimetz at the Jamestown Road restaurant. Two retail stores, one here, and one in Surry, give people a chance to sample and purchase the fine products. Locals and visitors support the store year-round, with certain times of year especially brisk. During the last holiday season, manager Lee Anne Stadelmann said she was slicing up to 100 hams daily. This Easter, the store will again be abuzz with 6

those purchasing and slicing hams for the holiday table. “What people may not realize is that we are the only store in the area that slices cooked, boneless hams at no charge,” Stadelmann said. Gourmet Magazine ranked Edwards’ tender smoked Surry ham as the Number One Easter ham. It’s a popular seller at the store. The deli counter at the Shoppe gives people a chance to sample the products as ingredients in delicious sandwiches. “The good news about the stores is that customers can learn about the different types of hams we carry and taste them,” Edwards said. Stadelmann makes everything fresh daily and the clientele responds enthusiastically. “I have people call and ask me if I have made the ham salad,” Stadelmann said. “We have really grown the deli area and our customer service is tops.” Staff member Terry Carr is eager to answer any question posed by customers and invites them to try the products for themselves. “We really encourage samples and greet every person who comes in,” Carr said. – Ann Efimetz

Busch Gardens opens Busch Gardens opens for a new season, Saturday, March 24. Last year the exciting new ride, “Mach Tower” made its debut, joining the other thrill rides at the park. But there’s another new coaster that will open this season. “Verbolten” is expected to open in May. Riders will travel in a sports car-themed coaster train on a scenic drive through the German countryside, then will take an unexpected detour on a closed road that runs through a dark and forbidding forest at speeds of up to 55 mph. The Verbolten name is a play on verboten, the German meaning forbidden. A bolt of lightning is in the logo for the ride.

Discover relaxation There is a place in town that can offer a panacea for the stress of everyday living. A soothing cup of tea enjoyed in a relaxed living room atmosphere may be just what you need to sooth your jangled nerves. Discover Teas in the Village Shops at Kingsmill offers that respite, a place to experience the warmth of tea and friendship. For the past year, owner Chris Farishon has worked to make Discover Teas a comfortable place where people can learn more about tea and incorporate it into their everyday lives. “I want this to be welcoming for anyone, a nice retreat for people from their hectic life, to shift gears,” Farishon said. “That is really what tea is all about.” Discover Teas offers more than 100 loose fine teas and herbs from around the world for sale. There’s also a “Blend-Your-Own” tea bar and a table where you can sniff a variety of teas to purchase or to sample. According to Farishon, one of the more popular blends is Williamsburg Port, their own unique blend. It is a non-alcoholic tea that simulates wine. Yorktown Patty, a mint blend, is another people seem to love. “Yorktown Patty is really good,” Farishon said. “It is guilt-free dessert in a cup.” The clientele is faithful year round. Warm cups of tea give way to cold, refreshing ice tea blends in the summer. Farishon said a new herbal line is coming as a result of customer requests. There will be blends designed to help people sleep better, aid digestion, boost immunity and provide decongestant qualities. Kenneth Roberts has worked at the store since its opening. He is a tea aficionado and enjoys helping people find the right blend.

“Tea is all about relaxing,” he said. “It can be part of a happy, healthy lifestyle. Tea lets you slow down and pamper yourself with something delicious.” On any given day, Van Vogel can be found at Discover Teas sipping a brew and working on his computer using the free Wi-fi in the lounge. “This is a very private, quiet place to come,” he said. “And the tea is awesome.” There is an open house planned to celebrate the first year anniversary 5-7 p.m., March 9. There will be lots of tea available for sampling, goodies and door prizes. Farishon hopes people will take the opportunity to come by to try some tea or just to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. “The response from the community and our customers has been great,” she said. “We are filling a need and providing people with quality tea and great customer service.” – Ann Efimetz

A new tale in antiques A new antique store has recently opened on Richmond Road. The Elephant’s Tale opened last month and features fine antiques, home accessories, artwork and lighting. “It is said that an elephant never forgets so it seemed a perfect name for an antique store,” said Megan Florakis, owner. “The idea for the store came about after my husband, Demetrios, and I bought an 80-year old house in Williamsburg and began shopping for antiques to furnish it. We had a blast and were amazed at the character of the pieces we bought and the quality of the workmanship.” The store is located in the new Arts District of the City of Williamsburg. It is located in the former Sotheby’s Realty, which is an older home. “The location gives me the opportunity to showcase my furnishings in an actual home setting and show my customers how each piece can be used,” she said.

Florakis also takes in consignments of antiques, collectibles and high end modern-day furniture. Those who visit the store will find pieces from across the United States. “I visit estate sales and auction houses from West Palm Beach, Florida all the way to New York and have put together a wonderful collection of unique pieces,” she said. “The hardest part of my job will be letting them go.” Florakis said her goal is to make the store comfortable for people to browse. “People are welcome to stop by any time for coffee and homemade sweets to enjoy while they browse the store,” she said. “I want my customers to feel at home and to know that if I don’t have what they’re looking for, I’ll find it.” – Ann Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Women’s History Month (Additional tickets required) Colonial Williamsburg celebrates the contributions of women of the 18th century to the history of our nation with programs throughout March in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area and Art Museums. During “The Polite Academy,” learn about tea, poetry, music and dance – the skills necessary for an accomplished 18th-century lady. Participate in a discussion of women from Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Trades shops during “Women’s Work in Business and Trade.” Explore how women contributed in the war effort through the program, “An Uncommon Soldier.” “Jane’s Struggle” discusses an enslaved woman’s efforts to be considered free and equal in the 18th century. In the museums, guests can discover more about the woman behind Colonial Williamsburg’s folk art collection – Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. “Made by Women” is a guided tour that discusses folk art created by women. Find out more about how women were depicted in 19th-century paintings. For more information, visit This Week or www.history.org

around town

Spring is at the Dell Spring is in the air. One of the most romantic places in town is on the campus of the College of William & Mary. Crim Dell, with its picturesque arched bridge, is one of the most lovely spots in greater Williamsburg. Crim Dell was a gift from the class of 1964, a friend of the college, David Baer and the family of John W.H. Crim. There is a plaque near the bridge honoring the memory of Crim, his wife Amelia and daughter, Barbara. Legend has it that if two lovers pass over the bridge and share a kiss in the center, they will remain together forever. If the relationship ends, however, the man has to be pushed off the bridge by the former lover. It’s also said that if someone passes over the bridge alone, that person is allegedly doomed for loneliness. Former W&M president Davis Paschall’s words at the dedication of Crim Dell in 1966 are remembered in a plaque near the footbridge. “That one may walk in beauty, discover the serenity of the quiet moment, and dispel the shadows....” That’s Crim Dell. – Ann Efimetz

Party arty This Century offers a new way to celebrate Have a birthday or other special occasion that you would like to celebrate in a novel way? This Century Art Gallery is offering “Art Parties” a chance to come and “paint a masterpiece” with friends, family or co-workers. “Art Parties came about upon the request of a new community member, who had participated in this type of event in her previous location,” said Susan Sullivan-Tubach, gallery director of education. “This is the first semester we have been offering them at the Art Education Center, where we have plenty of space for both the party refreshments and the art instruction.” The events are suitable for people of all ages to celebrate a variety of occasions. “It could be a teen or adult birthday party, a couples date night, office team-building event, a girls night out, singles groups, or any groups who want to do something fun together,” she said. A local professional artist will lend a hand in WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MARCH 2012

helping participants create the work of art during the event. The artists assist each person through every painting step. Those who book the parties can bring their own beverages, snacks or other foods for the budding artists to sample during the evening. The artwork to be recreated can be one of those suggested by the gallery, or a Master Artist piece (it must be 70 yrs. or older so it’s ok to copy). At the end of the party, you take home an 18x24 inch canvas with your work of art. The parties are typically scheduled 6:45-9 p.m. The cost is $35 per person and includes art instruction, canvas, paint and paintbrushes for use. “This is a fun-filled evening that is enjoyable for both the experienced artist and the beginning artist, even if they have never painted before,” she said. Health is the priority at Landing There have been numerous studies about the importance of staying physically active into the senior years. It’s believed that those who exercise regularly can improve their health in body, mind and spirit. The Health Club & Spa at Williamsburg Landing has a goal to help their residents, future residents and older adults age 62 or older living in the greater Williamsburg area achieve a higher quality of life by remaining active, and by providing varied opportunities for wellness. This is made possible through their state-of-the-art, 25,000 sq. ft wellness facility. “We have seen several residents and Williamsburg community members make big improvements to their health and well being that have affected their lives in a real way,” said Andy Switzer, director of fitness and aquatics. “We have become a vital resource for them as they take these steps to make changes in their lives.” The health club is celebrating its fifth anniversary. Since its opening, hundreds of residents of the Landing and those living in greater Williamsburg have taken advantage of the personalized attention given to each client. The club offers people a chance to participate in a variety of classes, exercise independently or in a group, and participate in other health-related programs. “We treat everyone as an individual and give every member an individualized fitness program,” he said. “At some gyms you may feel you are lost in the crowd, but here you get the personalized touch. There is always someone here to answer questions and help you.” The facility offers a 20 meter heated indoor pool, cardio fitness room, group exercise studio, art studio, woodshop, billiard and dart room, table tennis, indoor golf net, outdoor putting green, seminar room, lounge and patio areas. There’s also an array of services running the gamut from nutritional counseling with an on-staff dietitian to massages and facials. 46

“We focus on total wellness here,” Switzer said. “It is not just about physical wellness.” Classes are offered regularly and can accommodate people at every physical level. Classes include Zumba, Pilates, Yoga, chair Yoga, aerobic and aquatic classes all designed to offer participants of all fitness levels a way to have fun while staying fit. The Landing is also one of only three facilities in the state with balance and mobility specialist certified to offer the FallProof! program. This comprehensive balance and mobility training program helps people address and reduce the risk of falling. The biggest advantage of membership is its exclusive focus. “We are a facility that is designed and staffed to offer exercise programs just for older adults,” he said. – Ann Efimetz

Easter extravaganza returns It’s the fourth year CrossWalk Community Church in Norge will present “The Living Passover.” The show will run for 16 performances March 11April 1. The production is directed by Greg Ashley, and features a cast of about 125 people of all ages. “We added three matinee performances this year because our attendance was so huge last year,” Ashley said in a recent interview. “The production has taken on a life of its own. I had the vision to do it, but I never dreamed it would be something like this.” Ticket sales are already brisk. Last year, 1,300 tickets that included the Passover-style meal sold out three weeks before the show. Cumulatively, some 7,300 people have attended the production. The show features visual effects including live animals, pyrotechnics, lavish costumes and pageantry. There’s a variety of music ranging from traditional choral to contemporary. The goal is to make the Scriptures come alive for the audience. “People see how Scripture that is 2,000 years old can still apply to them today,” he said. “There is a social message with real things that real people deal with so they see people struggling with faith and faith in God.”

While the story of Christ’s Passion remains unchanged, there is a secondary storyline that is interwoven through the production. This year that story will feature Simon Peter, his wife and motherin-law. “The underlying theme is that even things we feel are broken in life can be a blessing,” he said. The role of Jesus will be played by Scott Venable, who has been involved with the production for the past two years. Ashley held open auditions for the roles and many of the actors are not CrossWalk members. Ashley said that audience members come from across the area and the country. Vistors, those staying in timeshares and tour groups have attended. “I think the greatest testimony was one I received from a local woman who was Catholic,” he said. “She thanked me for doing this and told me that it had nothing to do with denominations. She said the show brings us all together with an appeal to reach all faith backgrounds in our community.” Visit www.thelivingpassover.com or call 258-2825 for more information. – Ann Efimetz

Make Room for the Memories.

An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two livinghistory museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Because the history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger!

Save 20% on a combination ticket to both museums.
