Things that go bump in the night Max Taverniti is the owner of “The Ghosts of Williamsburg” candlelight tour. She answered some questions about the business, which continues to gain popularity. How long has Ghost Tours been in business? More than 25 years How did the idea come about? I love storytelling and love history. When I read the book “The Ghosts of Williamsburg “ by L. B. Taylor, I thought it would make a great candlelight walking tour, blending both storytelling with the history of the area. I then approached Mr. Taylor and arranged to own exclusive rights to tell his stories. We also own several trademarks in association with our tour and it’s titles. How many tours did it start with? Back then with just one on Friday and one on Saturday nights at 8 pm. How many now? In spring and summer about 25 to 30 groups nightly. For the general public we operate nightly at 8 p.m. except from June through October, we then have to offer two tour times to handle the crowds of people one at 8 and another at 8:45 p.m. How many employees do you have giving tours? On average 25-30 part-time guides per year. Who is the “Ideal” ghost tour guide? All of our guides must have a love for people, usually retired or stay-at-home, and have a college degree. Most hold degrees in education, but not all. What can people expect on the tour? A guided walking tour by lantern light of historic Williamsburg. They stop outside each house written about in L. B. Taylor’s book and the story is told there. We blend light fun historic facts and trivia. What has been added over the years to keep it fresh? Often Mr. Taylor will update his stories and we add those into our tour. 6
Anything new this year? Only when L.B. Taylor give us something new. After 25 years the stories have a big following and people come back to hear them again. We are careful to “freshen it” without changing the things people have grown to love about it. What are some of the comments people have shared with you? On our website www.theghosttour.com there is a page where customers post their comments and pictures they took while on our tour. It gets a tremendous amount of hits. What has most surprised you with this business? How adults love this tour as much as the children. We strive to keep it fun but not occultism or ghoulish. People love the subtle and dramatic way in which we tell the stories yet still feel they can bring their small children and not worry that they might see or hear something inappropriate or violent. For more information visit www.theghosttour.com or call 253-1058. –Ann Efimetz

Thanks, Mom Remember Mother’s Day with a special gift Did you know that the driving force behind the establishment of Mother’s Day was Anna Jarvis? She organized observances in Grafton, W.Va., and Philadelphia on May 10, 1908. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the annual celebration caught on and she asked Congress to set aside a day to honor mothers. She got her wish in 1914, when the second Sunday in May was officially named as Mother’s Day. Here’s some Mother’s Day trivia to regale your friends, also from the U.S. Census Bureau. July is the month with the highest number of births. The most common day to give birth is Tuesday. There are 5 million stay-at-home moms across the country and Sophia and Aiden were the most popular girl and boy baby names last year. So how will you remember Mom this Mother’s Day? Locally there are several gift, jewelry, spas and salons, restaurants and florists who can help pick out the ideal gift for your mother, grandmother, godmother, spouse or loved one. Here are some gift ideas from www.divinedinnerparty.com. Stores around town carry these and so much more. Have fun shopping for Mom. • Home items and decorations including, kitchen gadgets, pillows, sewing or craft items or furniture. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MAY 2011

Keeping smiles on their faces Brittain Campana began raising money and awareness for Operation Smile when she was a freshman at Hampton Roads Academy. Since, the 17-year-old senior has put in hundreds of hours planning events to benefit the Norfolkbased organization which performs free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries for children all over the world. She has been committed to the organization’s mission and realized how important their services were. It wasn’t until she went on a two-week mission trip with Operation Smile to Guwahati India, however, that she got to see it firsthand. “I actually went in the operating room with the kids,” Campana said in a recent interview. “I would carry them in and see them before, and then see the change after the surgery. I had seen it in pictures before I went, but seeing it in person was the coolest thing on the mission.” While there, the team of doctors and volunteers screened 500 children and performed 250 surgeries. Another team followed on their heels and finished the other half of the procedures. “Everyone was given surgery that we could have given it to,” she said. It was an eye-opening experience for Campana to see the extreme need of the people in that country. Not only were the hospitals unlike those in the U.S., people live without the basic necessities of clean water and housing. “The city was so dirty and there was poverty like you have never seen,” she said. “They live in such poverty and then they have children with facial deformities. Getting food is hard enough, but then the children may not be able to swallow the food or liquid. It was a double experience seeing the poverty in the country and seeing people in even worse situations.” WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MAY 2011
Before she graduates, Campana will organize a large event to raise money for about six surgeries, which are $1,000 each. She leaves a legacy. After she leaves HRA, the middle school Operation Smile Club which she was instrumental in starting, will continue, as will efforts in the high school. She plans to attend James Madison University next fall.

Fun and education await Where else can you learn about how waves are formed or how to keep the Chesapeake Bay healthy? If you attend the 9th annual Marine Science day at Virginia Institute for Marine Science in Gloucester, you can learn both. It is scheduled 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, May 21. The yearly event has become extremely popular among people of all ages. Not only do some kids get science class extra credit for attending, but adults attend come to learn more about our area waterways. “There are a lot of things geared especially for adults,” said Susan Maples, VIMS public outreach coordinator. “There are things for kids, but if you want to speak with scientists about research and what is going on in the Bay, you can do that, because they are available to talk with you about it.” Maples said some 2,000 people usually attend the event. They come from as far away as Richmond and Virginia Beach. According to information provided on the event, visitors will be able to tour working laboratories and display booths to learn how VIMS scientists help manage blue crabs, restore oysters, survey fish populations, unravel biodiversity, monitor water quality, find and remove ghost crab pots, and reduce the accidental capture of diamondback terrapins. Other activities will introduce VIMS international work in Antarctica. A new exhibit will be “Makin’ Waves” where visitors will learn how different types of crashing waves move sand and shells. 22
There will also be an interactive photo booth. Kids crafts will have an emphasis on seahorses. There will be other activities in the Children’s Pavilion. A highlight of the event is the “Parade of Marine Life.” Kids and adults are encouraged to make their way around campus wearing handmade creature costumes including jellyfish, sharks, dolphins and blue crabs. There will also be a series of events that begin at specific times including 10-minute mini-lectures and seafood cooking demonstrations, and more. Those who attend will likely leave with a deeper appreciation of life under the sea. “That’s why we do it,” Maples said. “To let people know what is going on here.” More? Musical cheers Mandolin concert this month Ever have the chance to hear a mandolin ensemble play? If you are curious, there’s a chance locally to hear a variety of music played on the instrument. This month, the Hampton Roads Mandolin Ensemble will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 20 at the Williamsburg Regional Library. The group of musicians, about half who live in Williamsburg, have been working to master a repertoire. The concert will feature three centuries of musical literature ranging from classical to contemporary. The group got together in 2009 through a posting on the website Mandolin Cafe.com which asked if there were mandolin players in our area who were interested in playing. The locals met online and decided to get together to play mandolin music as a group. “A bunch of us saw the posting and we got together for a meeting at the library and it went from there,” said John Kasley, one of the ensemble. “About seven people attended that meeting and about half are still playing with us,” added Barry Trott, who also plays with the group. “Some have moved away, and we have also gained new members.” Kasley said the mandolin has regained some of the popularity of its golden age about 100 years ago.
Many major cities including San Francisco and New York have revived the music and have mandolin ensembles. Kasley said he believes the local group is the only one in our area. The group has done several private and smaller concerts. The library event is the first large, public performance, which the group hopes paves the way for more. Those who attend the concert will hear music running the gamut from Bach to Scott Joplin ragtime music. “The music is accessible to almost everyone,” Trott said. The performers in the group all are adept at instruments in addition to the mandolin. “It is interesting to us that we came together having played different kinds of music and different instruments,” Trott added. The ensemble is always looking for new members. Trott and Kasley said those who are interested in finding out more should come to the performance. “We hope the concert will generate interest in people who may be mandolin players but didn’t have a chance to play with others in the past,” Trott said. –Ann Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. For more information on Colonial Williamsburg’s programs, visit our website at www.history.org

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MAY 2011
Two days are better than one An Occasion announces plans to expand It’s official. An Occasion for the Arts will move to a full weekend this year. It’s no surprise, as the annual art and entertainment festival has been nudging toward a two-day event for the past couple years. Those involved with the planning are enthusiastic about the prospect of offering more art, music, cultural and educational opportunities planned for Oct. 1-2. “We are very excited about it,” said Jane Medlin-Burton, president of An Occasions board. “We will present in two days what was before in one day.” The event will encompass all of Merchants Square and extend down Boundary Street to the Williamsburg Community Building. Entertainment will be on various stages throughout. The Williamsburg Symphonia will continue offering its “Music Under the Stars” concert as part of the event Saturday night. That’s become an integral part of an Occasion’s lineup and is well attended. Artists who were jurored into the last year’s show have been offered the chance to return.
Artists have been quietly supportive of expanding the show to two days, although logistically it will take some doing to supervise the open-air tents overnight. That’s where volunteers will be needed. People are being asked now to take part in the corps of folks who will be needed to make it all happen smoothly. Medlin-Burton said there will be quarterly updates about An Occasion to the community to keep the event in people’s minds more than just in the fall. The two-day format is in line with presenting this area as an arts destination, a goal of all the partnering organizations including, The City of Williamsburg, the Williamsburg Economic Development Authority, The College of William & Mary, the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance the Williamsburg Symphonia, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Merchants Square Association and the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission.

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. We have tourists come in everyday who have found us through this ad. We even have tourists who are visiting locals who find our ad and introduce the locals to the store for the first time. We have locals who pick up the magazine in our shop because they enjoy seeing what is going on in town and getting the great coupons that are offered by local businesses. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor

Memorial Day Remembering those who served Local events will commemorate those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. There are several events throughout the area which mark the day, which is observed on Monday, May 30. Colonial Williamsburg, area veterans groups and Yorktown generally have events to mark the occasion. According to www.usmemorialday.org, Memorial Day was originally known as “Decoration Day”. The alternative name of “Memorial Day” was first used in 1882. According to the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution, passed in 2000, all Americans are expected to “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MAY 2011
or listening to “Taps” at 3 p.m. local time, on Memorial Day. It was Moina Michael who conceived of the idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. Memorial Day was first enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, but its scope was expanded after World War I to include all U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. Music man Chances are you have seen Timothy Seaman around town. Or at the very least heard him. Seaman is one of the most in-demand local musicians in our area, playing some 200 performances yearly. He is a longtime performer at First Night, and during the holiday season, he performs more than a dozen special concerts at Colonial Williamsburg. He is currently part of the America’s Music program at Colonial Williamsburg playing twice monthly on Tuesdays. Sometimes you will encounter him playing his hammered dulcimer at area stores, events, signings and festivals. This month, he is the featured performer with the Cantori Vocal Ensemble’s concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 13 at Walnut Hills Baptist Church. Seaman is a master of the instruments he plays and refers to himself as “self-styled,” preferring to “sing” music by using his instruments, which number more than eight. In the upcoming concert, his music will be incorporated into some of the vocal selections using his flute and other whistles. The repertoire includes folk music tunes focusing on various aspects of love. “I have a vocal style with my flute and they have a
vocal style with their voices, so hopefully it will work well together,” Seaman said recently. Seaman has estimated that he’s sold some 100,000 CDs of his distinctive music over the17 years he has been playing music full-time. He has produced 12 solo works, four ensemble CDs and one compilation. He is currently working on his 18th work, another compilation entitled “Gentle Breeze Beneath The Trees.” In addition to the hard copies he has sold, Seaman has entered the world of digital music downloads, with his work available on iTunes, Amazon, Napster, Rhapsody, CD Baby and others. For his “Celtic Airs” CD, which features music from Scotland, Ireland and Wales, he played the Irish bodhran drum. He self-learned the technique by watching tutorials on YouTube and found it was similar in approach to strumming a guitar. “It has been really fun learning the drum,” Seaman said. ‘When I saw the tutorials I said, ‘I am going to do this’ because it is so much like strumming a guitar.” At his concerts, Seaman tries to establish a rapport with the audience. He is admittedly a shy person, but the music speaks for him. “I have a lot of music in me and a lot of passion about music topics and I want to share it with people. I like to feel as though I am sharing things with them rather than performing.” Seaman continually thinks ahead and admits he has several dreams for future recordings. One may include a CD featuring music of the Western U.S., including the Rocky Mountains or National Parks. He likely will begin work on a CD based on the music of the Civil War to commemorate its 150th anniversary. Whatever the project, he will approach it with his inimitable style. “I would love to do the tunes of the Civil War era,” he said. “Those were really touching simple pieces that were liked at the time. But I would do them with flair. Simplicity with a flair.” – Ann Efimetz Photo courtesy Timothy Seaman
