AROUND TOWN

Plans for the Pottery Williamsburg Pottery president Kim Maloney recently unveiled a $20 million makeover of the shopping destination located on Richmond Road in Lightfoot. All the buildings on 19 acres fronting Richmond Road will be demolished and rebuilt anew over 18 months. Three new buildings with 147,000 square feet of retail will be grouped around a central plaza. The Pottery is pursuing a traditional European market theme and will use Dutch colonial and Dutch West Indies styles. Buildings will have discrete storefronts with steeply sloped roofs, ironwork and brighter color schemes that reflect the Dutch experience in the Caribbean. A plaza will feature a stage as well as smaller courtyards between buildings for relaxing and gathering. Merchandise will be expanded, but the famous ceramics will be retained, along with the framing shop and homegrown geraniums.

Access will shift roughly 400 feet west on Richmond Road to a right turn across the railroad tracks. The main entrance on Lightfoot Road will remain in place. Local construction firm Henderson Inc. will build the new Pottery. Architects are Guernsey Tingle. Groundbreaking is anticipated in December, and the grand opening is set for April 5, 2012, which would have been Potter founder Jimmy Maloney’s 100th birthday.

THE PULPIT

First Church of Christ, Scientist In 1879, Mary Baker Eddy founded the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Ma. There are branch churches throughout the world, including one here on Jamestown Road. The church offers Sunday services at 11 a.m. and Wednesday evening testimony service at 7:30. Adjacent to the church is the Christian Science Reading Room, which is a tranquil place, open to the public. “It is a place where if you want to come and study, it is quiet,” said Hazel Mann, church member. “We have a lot of Bible research material with different versions of the Bible and all of Mary Baker Eddy’s writings, biographies and other books pertaining to Christian Science which can be bought or read here.” “The name ‘reading room’ came from the olden days when people couldn’t afford books,” Mann said. “Publishers would have a place where people could go and read a book.” First Church of Christ, Scientist services are conducted by two readers, who are elected from the membership by church members. The lesson/sermon consists of selections from the Bible and “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy. They are read around the world by all Christian Science churches. One of the aspects of Christian Science which distinguishes the church from others is its tradition of reliance on prayer for healing. Practioners are Christian Scientists who are in the healing practice and assist those seeking healing. Here is a timeline of the history of Christian Science in Williamsburg. 1918 - While visiting in Chicago a local resident received healing through Christian Science treatment. 1919 - Christian Science services were first held in Williamsburg at the residence on Nicholson Street, now known as Tayloe House. 1930 - Sunday School was organized in a home on Griffin Avenue. 1936 - A building at the corner of North Boundary and Prince George Street was used, Wedesday evening meetings were held and a reading room established. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, OCTOBER 2010

1942 - Recognition as a Christian Science Society 1952 - Present church property was purchased, and recognition as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Williamsburg was granted. 1957 - Cornerstone was laid, and was completed the next year. 1997- The Reading Room in its current location opened. According to Mann, the church has several members who have attended the church since the 1950s. ––Ann Efimetz

AROUND TOWN

Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month The Heritage Humane Society will celebrate Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month in October. It is the ideal time to visit the shelter on Waller Mill Road and find the perfect new four-legged family member.

local pets. Bledsoe said that the society might welcome as many as 100 animals in a month. The society offers counselors to those who want to adopt, available to answer questions. People who decide to bring a doggie home during the month need to remember something very important. “Bringing an animal into our families should be viewed as nothing short of a lifelong commitment,” Bledsoe said. ––Ann Efimetz

Robin Bledsoe, executive director, said that the special month allows the shelter to really focus on adoption of dogs. A new program will be launched to celebrate animals in a special way. “We are launching “Paparazzi Pets” which is our program where several animals are featured monthly with beautiful, framed studio shots,” she said. “Each adopter of a Paparazzi Pet will be able to take home a gorgeous picture of their new family member to commemorate the beginning of a very special relationship.” Although the shelter welcomes adoptions throughout the year, October does offer a few unique advantages. “Summer has ended, families tend to come back together and settle back into their regular routine, children are back to school,” Bledsoe said. “It’s been proven that dogs can help lower stress and help build esteem and self-confidence within school age children.” The benefits that come with adoption are boundless. “The obvious benefit to sharing your home and family with a pet is the unrecognized void that animal fills once in the home,” Bledsoe said. “I have yet to meet anyone who has raised a pet that has not acknowledged how the inclusion has enriched their lives in ways they never imagined.” The situation is win-win, as adopting a pet offers a home to a homeless animal. A dog can bring unconditional love and an emotional bond into its new family’s life. Animals also teach young children responsibility, nurturing and compassion for another living creature. Last year Heritage Humane served over 1,000 WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

TIPS FOR ADOPTION The Heritage Humane Society is open noon-4:30 p.m. daily except Thursday. Surrenders are by appointment only. Call 221-0150 or visit heritagehumanesociety.org to see photos of available pets. Keep these things in mind when selecting a pet: Breed Check temperament of various breeds to make sure they would be compatible with your family’s activity level and lifestyle. Age Would a puppy or an older dog fit better with the family lifestyle? Time Do you have enough time to devote to establishing a relationship with a dog? Budget Costs for adoption, veterinary care and food must be considered when adopting a pet. Space Make sure there is enough room for a dog to move, eat and sleep comfortably.

Age: 11 School: 6th grade, Hampton Roads Academy Raised $1,000 for Smile Train, an organization which performs cleft lip and cleft palate surgery for children in need.

When Michael Keller was reading “Popular Science” magazine several months ago, an advertisement for Smile Train, an international charity that provides cleft lip and cleft palate surgery to children in need, caught his eye. It was around Christmas time, and he thought the organization would make a good charity for him to contribute to. “I got a letter from Smile Train after my first donation asking if I could donate again, along with a picture of the child I helped from my first donation,” Keller said recently “I decided I wanted to donate again.” As a member of his neighborhood swim team, Wellington Waves, he decided that as summer approached, he would swim a mile for the charity. “I enjoy swimming and swimming comes fairly WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, OCTOBER 2010

easily to me,” he said. “I thought that swimming a mile would be a challenge.” The youngster had a goal of $300 which is the cost of one surgery. He also wanted to raise awareness about Smile Train. “I went to all the houses in my neighborhood on my bike and passed out flyers. Then I went back to the neighborhood homes and collected donations,” he said. During the swim, his coach, Liz Crispino, sat at the end of the pool with a lap counter and a timer. The kids who were at the swim practice stayed and cheered him on. Keller swam the mile in 29.45 minutes. All tolled, Keller raised some $1,000 which was sent to Smile Train. “It made me feel great,” Keller said. “ It also made me wonder, if I can do that what else can I do, what can the community and I do?” Keller added that he will continue fundraising for charity in the future. ––Ann Efimetz

John C. Morton

Popping the cork for charity

The inaugural fundraiser, “Corks for A Cause” of the Williamsburg Community Foundation got a boost from Aberdeen Barn’s executive chef, John “J.C.” Morton. Morton, who has been working at the restaurant for more than two decades, began saving corks popped out of bottles of wine purchased by restaurant patrons. Before long, the corks started stacking up. Morton isn’t sure how many he’s accrued over the years, but they recently filled the bed of Aberdeen Barn owner Dennis White’s pickup truck. “The corks are a by product of selling lots of wine at the restaurant,” Morton quipped recently. The corks have been put to good use for the fundraiser. Some 20 area restaurants and wine shops are participating in “Corks for A Cause, which runs through Oct. 4. The event provides a novel way to support the Williamsburg Community Foundation, which supplies grants to dozens of nonprofit organizations in the areas of arts and culture, environment, historic preservation, health and human services and education. Each participating business will have a container filled with corks. Those interested in participating can donate $2 to guess how many corks are in the container. The person with the closest guess will win a $100 gift certificate to that venue. Morton is glad that the corks he collected have been put to good use. He lost count long ago. “I have no idea how many I have,” he said. “I have been keeping them in huge mayonnaise tubs in my garage.” The entire restaurant staff became involved in the cork recycling project. We looked at is at recycling. It was a way for us to do something without a lot of effort.” Morton said that corks make of cork are becoming more scare, as several wine manufacturers are turning to plastic and screw tops. Some corks in the collection are elaborately designed and look like small works of art. Problem is the hundreds of corks floating around don’t have a permanent home. Morton hopes that a group, individual or arts organization will express an interest in the corks and use them creatively. Corks make great art projects and can be fashioned into wreaths, trivets and various other pieces. Morton said his daughter used some of the corks to hold place cards at her wedding. “If we can find a good home for them, or something that someone wants to do something with them, that would be great,” he said. “Anyone who wants them can have them.” Want some corks?
