Welcome to LMPages issue 3 It is important that we begin by thanking all those who have supported us along the way and all those who have recently come on board. Our circulation figure has increased from 10,000 copies in the first edition and we continue to grow! Children and Young People’s Services, Leicester City Council In April 2006, the Social Care and Health department at Leicester City Council (sometimes known as Social Services) joined with the Education and Lifelong Learning department to become ‘Children and Young People’s Services.’ This change was due to a government initiative that aims to ensure that professionals work more closely together in the best interest of children and young people. The government’s aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to: Be healthy, Stay safe, Enjoy and achieve, Make a positive contribution and Achieve economic well-being.

Services for children, young people and families

There are lots of children and young people in Leicester from a variety of cultures and religions, and all have different needs and use different services. Services provided by Children and Young People’s Services include schools, children’s centres, child protection services, childcare and preschools, youth support services and special needs teaching services. Below are details of just some of the City Council services available to children and young people, their parents and carers: Children’s Information Service There are many different types of childcare to choose from to suit the needs of your family, including childminders, pre-schools, out of school care and day nurseries. Social Care and Safeguarding Part of the new department concentrates on social care and safeguarding, or protection matters. Can you help?

Every year Children and Young People’s Services look after hundreds of local children. These include newborn babies, toddlers, school-age children, groups of brothers and sisters, and disabled children. They come from all Leicester’s communities and they need foster carers from all races, cultures and religions. Sometimes parents simply need someone to look after their children for a short time until they can sort out family problems. At other times children are removed from their families because of fears for their health and safety. When Zenab worked part time in a Next call centre she was inspired to start up her own fashion outlet. Naqsh caters for a niche in the market, stocking collections of ladies casual wear and a small selection of evening gowns.
