CIRCLE OF SHARING

Official bulletin of the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Circle K District

WHAT’S INSIDE?

Governor’s Welcome Hello Circle K’ers! Thank you to everyone who attended Spring Fling in April! It was a great time and very successful. We raised $500 for Camp Wawbeek and completed some wonderful service projects! Highlights of the weekend included a heartfelt remix of Wannabe, fun workshops, some great skits, and, of course, a Denny’s run on Friday night. I can’t wait to see all of you (and your friends!) again at MERP, and at MAC this fall. I would also like to thank all the Presidents and Secretaries who worked through the first month of this new MRF system! I know there was some confusion but you guys did a great job of communicating with us and working with us to solve any difficulties. Hopefully, this process will get easier as the summer goes on, and if you have any questions or suggestions for improvements, feel free to let us know! We are always working to make things more efficient and helpful for you guys, so suggestions are always welcome. As we head into the summer, I encourage everyone to remain active in Circle K, whether it’s doing a couple events as a club or just doing individual volunteering back in your hometown and reporting those hours. Summer volunteering is a great way to work with the Kiwanis Family and have fun outside! I would also love to attend any events you guys are hosting over the summer, so go ahead and shoot me an invite. Yours in Service,

Zoey Colglazier 1

END OF THE ROAD:

DCON WRAP-UP Hey there WUM Circle K-ers. Thank you so much for an amazing year! As you may know, this year’s DCON was held March 2nd-4th in Madison, WI, the theme of the convention was road trip. Throughout the weekend, we went on a fantastic trip. There were awesome workshops and activities as well as lots of time to get to know new fellow Circle K-ers. Here is a quick recap of the weekend: FRIDAY was the day the most of us arrived. I think that everyone really enjoyed the Friday night activities, which were icebreakers and Circle K/Road Trip related trivia. After, we had preliminary caucusing and then free time.

10

SATURDAY was the most packed day! We started early with breakfast and service projects (yay plarning) and then continued on to workshops, the Kiwanis Family Luncheon, and House of Delegates. We fundraised over $200 during our “Miracle Minute” during the Kiwanis Family Luncheon! Way to go, WUM! Also, congrats to the new district board, specifically our new governor, Zoey Colglazier. Thank you all for stepping up to be this year’s new leadership.

Later, we honored the District Board’s and club presidents’ work at the Governor and Administrator’s reception. Then we had the President and Parent’s banquet for all members. Congratualtions to all of you who won awards! We also got to hear from Matt Glowacki, our keynote speaker for the weekend, who gave us a better idea of how to direct our service respectfully toward diverse populations. We ended Saturday night with a very fun dance. I have to say, in all my years attending Kiwanis Family DECONs, this year’s WUM DCON had the most fun dance! You all sure know how to boogie! SUNDAY means the last day of DCON, which is always sad. The closing sessions were lovely. I am so thankful for being able to get to know such an amazing group of passionate individuals this year.. That being said, the only way to continue on with our district and make it successful is to maintain and increase membership. Start talking about DCON and its importance early. Think about what you ca do to help make this district great. You don’t need to be on the District Board to make changes and show the world how passionate you are about this organization. I can’t believe my four years in Circle K are coming to an end, but I am so happy about how DCON went this year and seeing you all enjoy yourselves gives me hope for the future of the district. WHAT A THROWBACK!

SPRING FLING WRAP-UP

Bye, bye, bye… to the end of the school year, that is! The last Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District event of the year was our spring training weekend — throwing it back to Spring Fling. Thank you to those that cam out for a fun event of service, leadership, and fellowship at Camp Wawbeek. For those of you that couldn’t make it or don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, the district puts on two events every year in the Wisconsin Dells at an Easter Seals camp: Camp Wawbeek. The events are full of Circle K’s three tenets — doing service projects, attending workshops, and going to Denny’s. This year we changed things up a little bit and make the event only two days long, leaving plenty of time for the weekend and, of course, studying. We started off Friday night writing letters to soldiers overseas and making boo-boo bunnies and non-slip socks. Then we had some fun Friday night activities leading up to the Mascot Auction and ending with some Denny’s. Saturday morning, everyone was up bright and early for service projects before we had some afternoon workshops. The day ended with meetings and dinner, then a group hug.

16

Thanks to the 33 attendees who were able to raise over $500 for Camp and complete over 80 service hours. It was a great weekend for all those that came out and I hope that those of you who didn’t get a chance will be able to bring their whole gang in the fall for our Membership Awareness Conference. Congratulations, Alverno Circle K! We were honored at the Alverno Excellence in Leadership Awards for our outstanding service throughout the past year that contributed significantly to the Alverno, Milwaukee, and global community. The successful nominee for this award offered service that: responded to a demonstrated need or issue within the Milwaukee or Alverno community; promoted awareness; provided education; was well received with recipients; identified, targeted, and served a specific audience; and promoted student involvement. This award included a $100 monetary award to our organization. Thank you for your service during the 2010-2018 school year! Yours in service, Ashley R. Prondzinski Alverno Circle K President

A handy guide to the abbreviations used in Circle K

Letter from the Editor Hi everyone! You made it to the end of the issue! Thanks so much for reading this far (I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didn’t just skip to the end). I hope you enjoyed the first issue of the Circle of Sharing that I had the pleasure to create. I definitely could not have done all of this on my own, though. I would like to extend a huge thank you to everybody who gave me information, wrote articles, and provided pictures for me to use in this issue. You’re all amazing! This is my first time creating a large, detailed newsletter like this so I know that I still have a lot of room for improvement. Look forward to even better Circle of Sharing issues in the future! If there is anything you would like to contribute to or see in future issues, don’t hesitate to email me at lmuller308@gmail.com. There’s always room for additional content! If you liked this issue, please keep an eye out for the next one; it will be arriving at the beginning of August! Yours in Service,

Luke Muller
