WHAT’S INSIDE?

Farewell from District Administrator Janet DeGroot As I look back at that day 118 months ago when to my surprise I was asked to serve as district administrator for the WisconsinUpper Michigan Circle K District I cannot help but smile. It was the day that started a great adventure of working with the members of this district. There have been ten unique governors, over a hundred board members, hundreds of club members, thousands of miles of travel and countless dozens of cookies over that period of time. Serving this district has brought me lifelong friends, priceless lessons and a deep sense of gratitude. I never cease to be amazed at the good that the members of Circle K do for their campus, community, and world. There have been tens of thousands of service hours performed and thousands of dollars raised to help others and that doesn’t happen without the dedication of everyone in this district.

Many thanks to those who went on this adventure with me. To my family who rearranged their plans to accommodate my Circle K schedule. To my assistant administrators past and present: Jeremy, Justin, Lena, Barry, Fred, and Katie for giving your time and talents to help train and support all those who served on the district board. To my governors: Amber, Jill, Cody, Morgan, Lena, Teasha, Five, Kasey, Brandon and Zoey for dedicating your time, determination, and dreams to helping the clubs and members of this district achieve their goals. To all the Kiwanians and college faculty who have supported Circle K as advisors your work is more important than anything I could do alone. To the WI-UM Kiwanis District and its clubs for their continual belief in Circle K and all that you have done for the organization. To the Circle K alumni, you are in my heart and I am eternally grateful for the time we have spent together. You are simply amazing. Finally, thank you to each and every member of this district. Your hard work is what makes this district great. You are an inspiration. Know that what you do is seen and what you do matters. Continue to care for those around you and dream big. I have learned a great deal on this journey and I know that working together you can accomplish anything.
Yours in Service,
Janet DeGroot Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Circle K District Administrator

MILWAUKEE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING HIGHLIGHTS Puppyland
Our members loved playing with all the dogs and cats at the Puppyland human society. It is great to take care of the animals and relieve some stress from our busy school work.
Meaningful Makeover
Every year our members enjoy giving back to the community by helping redecorate one of the rooms at the Salvation Army Emergency Lodge. We enjoy being creative in decorating the room and it is rewarding to see everything come together.
Ronald McDonald House
One of our favorite volunteering opportunities is serving brunch at the Ronald McDonald House. It’s fun to see everyone put their culinary skills to the test. Most of the time it turns out well and the guests really enjoy it, too.

ADVICE FROM A GUY WHO KNOWS THINGS:
BOBBY KING’S
5 TIPS FOR NEW CIRCLE K
EXECUTIVE BOARDS 1. Have a date for the first executive board meeting already planned before the summer. If you don’t set this date early enough, organizing your first meeting and recruitment methods can fall through, leaving you low in members for the rest of the semester. It’s suggested that each e-board decides when a first executive meeting will happen before the summer starts, and that meeting be the week before or early in first week. 2. Take a break once in a awhile. Service projects are a great way to start off the year accompanied by your first meeting or event, but make sure to diversify your events with a few socials. They can be as simple as going bowling, hiking, having a bonfire, or even finding a trivia night to go to. A club that knows each other personally is an important point to retain newly recruited members, and to keep old members invested in the people in the club and not just the club.
12
3. Recruitment isn’t just tabling.
As you start your new semester, remember to actively recruit along with passive methods like tabling, posters, and literature. Active recruitment is done with engagement and networking. Don’t limit your invite list to just your members and invite those who might not be close to joining the club but are interested in the events you are offering. 4. Other clubs aren’t competition, they are a potential partner. As much as we like to make fun of Rotaract, they have value as partners in service. Keeping in touch with other clubs on your campus is a great way to keep your club’s name relevant around campus while also giving and getting some extra help with events. Additionally, participating in campus-sponsored service events helps you find more people with a love for service. 5. If you are struggling, don’t hide it. One of the worst things you can do as an executive board member is struggle with a workload and not tell anyone. If you need help, reach out to your e-board to let them know. It’s a lot more professional and easier on the rest of your board if you let them know something will be late or you can’t make it to an event, for example. Letting them know early lets the board pick up work where you need help and keep everything running smoothly.

WEATHER FORECAST It was quite the February across Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Green Bay was in the top 3 for snowiest February on record, while other locations in the Badger State had the most snow ever for February and even the most in any given month ever. Spring can't get here quick enough. However as we spend the weekend in Green Bay, it is still going to feel a lot like the middle of winter. As you were heading into Titletown, snow was rolling in from the west and the flakes will be flying throughout Friday night. Although accumulations are expected to range from 1-3", it will just make for messy driving conditions around town. In the wake of the snow, turning colder for the weekend with limited sunshine on Saturday and breezy. The coldest day is going to be on Sunday as we wrap up DCON and head home. After starting out below zero, highs will only be able to make it into the single digits, even with the help of sunshine. Here's the breakdown of the DCON Forecast in Titletown:
20
Friday: Mostly cloudy with snow developing toward evening. High 25
Friday night: Periods of snow, winding down by daybreak. 1-3" accumulation. Low 16°
Saturday: Breezy with clouds & breaks of sun, cold. High 19°
Saturday night: Brisk & rather cold with some clouds. Low -7°
Sunday: Partly cloudy and bitterly cold. High 5°
This weather forecast is brought to you by Assistant District Administrator Jeremy Tabin
FUNDRAISERS Throughout the weekend we will be raising money for Camp Wawbeek and other service partners. Please bring your change and extra cash and donate!

QUIZ: HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW THE DISTRICT BOARD?

2018-2019 DISTRICT BOARD REFLECTIONS AND THANK-YOUS DISTRICT GOVERNOR ZOEY COLGLAZIER Reflections: This year has been a roller coaster, but one that’s so exciting and exhilarating that I’d ride it again a million times if I could. I’m so thankful for this opportunity to be your governor. I think my favorite part of this year was getting to visit so many clubs and hearing about all the cool projects different clubs were working on. I’m going to miss everyone on my board (even though I know I’ll talk to them outside Circle K and district board, I still get a little sappy) and I’m definitely going to miss talking to Janet every week. She has a story for every scenario and has always been incredibly supportive and kind. I can’t imagine this year without her by my side; her guidance and help have been instrumental. The funniest memory I have from this past year...there’s so many! Making a fort around Cole at new board training and then having to push our cars up the driveway in a blizzard, Denny’s at Spring Fling, the 12 hour round trip drive to Bay Cliff Health Camp, House of Delegates at CKIx, seeing all the new faces at MAC and Matt’s admiration for his lunch, attending UWM’s first meeting, reffing gaga ball with St. Norbert, and so many more that would take too long to detail here.
Thank yous: Shout out to Bobby King for coming on a bazillion road trips with me and listening to me vent, Luke Muller for reminding me to relax and enjoy district events and being kickass all the time (am I allowed to say that in a district publication?), and Liz Hennessey for just being great and a wonderful friend. I love all of you and I’m so glad we became friends this past year. Also thanks to all the admins for being incredibly supportive and always having my back, and Sarah Haskell for stepping up when we needed her and being absolutely amazing.
26
DISTRICT SECRETARY BOBBY KING Reflections: One of the things I’m going to miss the most after this CKI year ends is walking out into my living room and spending an hour or two talking about Circle K with Cole at random. Thank yous: The people I am most thankful for are the Platteville Kiwanis for all they do to support us. Additionally, I would like to thank all of the new e-boards for taking up the task of leading their club. DISTRICT BULLETIN EDITOR LUKE MULLER Reflections: Well, this has been a fun year. I’ve been involved with Circle K since my freshman year way back in 2014 but 2018 DCON was my first district event and I totally ran for this position off the floor on a whim. I’m very glad I did because it gave me the opportunity to meet and get to know so many great people. Serving on the District Board this year has been a fantastic experience and I don’t regret letting Zoey talk me into it at all. Thank yous: First of all, big thanks to Matt for letting me ditch my club-level bulletin editor position to take the district position. Also thank you to Daniel, who stepped up and filled the empty MSOE bulletin editor position after I vacated it. Lastly, I would like to thank everybody on the district board for being so awesome as people this past year. I’m going to miss all of you. METRO-SOUTHEAST LTG ASHLEE TROTTER Reflections: I will miss seeing my home club grow into what it is now, board bonding, Luke posing in front of badly parked cars, and meeting amazing people who I would never have met without Circle K. For the gift exchange this year, Janet was the best Secret Santa ever. She got me a rock!! And a journal!! I have used that journal so much and journaling has helped me a lot through tough times. Thank yous: Thank you for everyone who supported me and listened when I needed to talk to someone. Especially thank you to my parents for always being there for me.
27
CAPITAL LTG JONATHAN TOTSKY Reflections: I have enjoyed serving as the Capital Division Lieutenant Governor since October. This position has allowed me to have opportunities to visit and communicate with each club within the division and learn what makes them unique, whether it is their eboard structure (ex: two presidents and vice presidents), their socials (ex: Thanksgiving, bonfire, etc.), their service projects (ex: Bethel House), etc. One funny story is how my phone died within five minutes of arriving at Platteville’s Thanksgiving social and how I could not find an outlet that would charge it. Thanks to another UW-Whitewater member who attended with me as well as my knowledge of the overall route, I was able to return safely. Thank yous: I would like to thank Mariah Sprain for being a great president at UWWhitewater this year and for informing me of this great opportunity to serve as Capital Division LTG. Her encouragement and support were exactly what I needed to reaffirm that this was something I wanted to do and to help me make the transition. It also has been great to be able to communicate with her frequently about challenges, Circle K updates, and personal matters. Mariah’s impact has transformed UW-Whitewater and my Circle K experience for the better. ARH CHAIR COLE NELSON Reflections: Looking back at this year, there were a lot of great moments with friends both old and new. There were a lot of new faces this year, both at our club and district.
There were a lot of adventures this year: journeying out to Camp Wawbeek for MAC and Spring Fling, Green Bay for DCON prep, and Dubuque for St. Luke’s Food for the Soul.
There were a lot of memories this year: too many too list, so I’ll let the pictures explain.
28
Thank yous: Thanks to our district board for a fun and exciting year! A thank you to our executive board and committee heads for making this year even possible! A thank you to our Kiwanis Advisor, Bev, who’s always there cheering us on. And a special thank you to Janet DeGroot for all of the work she has put into making WUM Circle K possible! She will be dearly missed. SERVICE CHAIR JESS WELLS Reflections: I can’t believe this Circle K year is coming to a close. I am especially proud of my home club at UW-Platteville as it was extremely rewarding getting to see everyone grow as leaders this year. Circle K has given me so many memories to choose from. This organization has given me the opportunity to really grow as a person and has led to some of the most amazing friendships. Thank yous: Special shout out to Cole Nelson for all the work he put in as Vice President at Platteville and ARH chair. Your contributions made a huge difference to our club and district! Thank you to Sarah Haskell for making me feel like I can make a difference in people's lives and for being an absolute rock star!
29
MDG CHAIR DEANN “D” DAVIDSON Reflections: I joined Circle K three years ago, and at the time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Stritch’s club has just been chartered and a group of us went to MAC. That weekend is when I realized that this organization was something special, something that I wanted to be a part of. Less than 9 months later, I ran for District Secretary off the floor at DCON and served in that position for the next year. That late decision led me to learning leadership skills, but also finding friendships that will last a lifetime. Circle K has provided me with opportunities, but also amazing memories, like car rides with Lena, going to P-Vegas for a weekend and then being late to work (oh, well), matching with Justin (opposite teams though) at MAC during the NLCS, and taking photos of Luke next to poorly parked cars. Being part of Circle K has been such an honor and I am so grateful to this organization and most of all, the people within it who have helped me grow into the person I am today. I’m going to miss it immensely. Thank yous: Okay, I would list just about everyone I’ve met in Circle K to thank, buuuuut I’m not going to do that. Instead, thank you to everyone I’ve met and formed connections with. I’d like to thank Casey Ortega, for being the best advisor Stritch could have asked for, but also being an incredible friend I never would have met had it not been for Circle K. I would also like to thank her sister, Lena, for being an amazing person and admin and for being my road trip buddy last year. I would like to thank Justin and Janet for being awesome all the time. But most of all, I want to thank Erin for being one of my best friends. Your friendship is the best thing Circle K has given me. SPECIAL EVENTS CHAIR MATT EISENSCHENK
Reflections: This past year, I really enjoyed getting to meet everyone on the district board! They all are truly amazing people and I have been blessed to get to know them! Thank yous: I would like to personally thank all of my fellow board members (both district and club level) for assisting me in having a great year! It would not have been as successful of a year without all of your constant support in coming up with outstanding event ideas and helping me get things done on time. Bless all of y'all's souls!
30
DCON CHAIR SARAH HASKELL Reflections: My first year with Circle K has been amazing. Between always teasing Cole about how he cannot bake cookies to meeting everyone at MAC and celebrating WUM week, this year has been filled with AMAZING events. My top three memories from this year are: in December, we went caroling at retirement homes in Platteville and it was a blast. We learned that we may have some members who are tone deaf but our audience always had smiles on their faces and even sang along with us. Shout out to Dave for carrying the group. Recently, Platteville went bowling for WUM week and all of our members got closer. Everyone was laughing and having a great time. Also, all of the car rides to events like MAC and district board meetings have been a blast. The car was always full of laughter and great music. Every time we take a trip, I am grateful to have such amazing friends like Bobby, Jess, and Cole. The funniest memory of this year is when Platteville played tag with two giant K’s and Bobby and I were sitting in the same room and everyone would pass by me and hand the K to Bobby and then Bobby would hand it off to me. It went on like this for a good while.
Thank yous: Jess, Cole and Bobby deserve huge a thank you from me. They were always there to help me plan service activities and without their encouragement, I wouldn’t be DCON chair. Also, my friend Brooke Steeno deserves a million thank yous from me; she is always positive and super encouraging. Finally, I have to say thank you to my best friend Liz for always listening to my Circle K stories and keeping me calm while I’m planning Circle K activities or studying.

DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR JANET DEGROOT Reflections: So proud of all the work that the small but mighty 18-19 WUM CKI District Board did this year. It has been a pleasure working with them and great getting to know this unique group of student leaders. A fantastic group of students to work with my final year as administrator! Thank yous: See page 3.
ASSISTANT DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR JUSTIN HAHN Reflections: This has been a wonderful year of learning, whether that learning was watching new members and clubs attending District events for the first time and learning all about Circle K, members learning the impact they are making through service, or myself learning even more and preparing to be Janet’s successor as Administrator. Janet will be truly missed and I can only hope to as great of a job as she has done for the last 10 years. My favorite memory of her and me together during this process was when we flew into DC and rented a car to drive to the Circle K International Convention in Virginia Beach. It was an experience and I can’t wait to make that drive again together. Thank yous: I would like to thank the clubs for all of the amazing service that has been accomplished this year. I would like to thank all of the members for making a difference in the lives of others. I would like to thank the District Board for working so diligently to ensure the success of the District. I would like to thank Janet for an amazing 10 year run as Administrator and for leaving a lasting impression on so many. I would like to thank Lena for agreeing to be my Assistant District Administrator and to Ann and Rachel for agreeing to be Assistant Administrators. Lastly, I want to thank every member and club in our District for looking to the future as we progress forward together and ensure the lasting success of WUM Circle K.
32
ASSISTANT DISTTRICT ADMINISTRATOR JEREMY TABIN
Reflections: I will miss seeing everyone at each District event and making the bi-annual trip down to Camp Wawbeek to bask in the warmth of spring, or enjoy the always-colorful autumn foliage while doing some service for camp. All those tasty cookies made by Mama J will certainly be another thing I'll miss. One fond memory is when we went for pizza in Madison and got a bonus holiday music performance by an acapella group. ASSISTANT DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR LENA SHEIBENGRABER Reflections: This year, just like every year I’ve gotten to work with the district board, has been a fun and insightful one. Watching Circle K leaders grow, attending fun district events, and working alongside the best Admin/Assistant Admin team has been rewarding and inspiring. I cannot say enough about how amazing it has been to work with Janet. I’ve gotten to experience challenging and rewarding things with her while I was in Circle K, such as trying to figure out how to organize a group of members without cell service in Vancouver. She brought me on the admin team, where I’ve learned so much about how to help support board members and clubs from a different role. We’ve gotten to have many #SassyAdmin moments and played some serious rounds of Cards Against Muggles. We’ve gotten to celebrate together, cry together, and we’ve definitely had our fair share of weird nerdy moments. I am so grateful to know her on a different level than I had while I was in CKI, and I can only hope to assist in carrying on the legacy that is Momma J. Thank yous: As every year, there are so many people to thank for this amazing journey: first, I would like to thank the amazing members of WUM Circle K, as without them, we would be nothing! Secondly, to the district board, for being honest with their challenges and feedback and open to new ideas.

Letter from the Editor Hello again, everyone! Wow, is it time for the last issue of the Circle K year already? My, how time flies when you’re doing service. But seriously, I’ve enjoyed creating these bulletins for you and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading them just as much. A lot goes into making each of these issues and I couldn’t have done it alone. I want to extend a huge thank you to everybody who has submitted content to the Circle of Sharing this year. This publication wouldn't be possible without you. I made this issue specifically with DCON in mind, since the publication date is the same as DCON’s start date. I apologize if you’re reading this postconvention and finding a large chunk of the bulletin irrelevant. However, there is definitely still some good stuff in here no matter when you’re reading it, so I hope you peruse the pages and find something to enjoy. I should probably say some kind of goodbye here, right? I’m graduating this spring and moving to Los Angeles, so you won’t be seeing much more of me after this. It’s been great working with all of you in the district during my college career. If you see me at DCON or Spring Fling be sure to come say hi! I always like meeting new people, especially if I already know they’re fantastic like you. This is your District Bulletin Editor, signing off. Yours in Service,
