Welcome Back from District Governor Zoey Colglazier Welcome to the start of a great year in Circle K! Summer has come and gone too fast, and now it’s time to gear up for the start of fall semester (or trimester). I’m so excited to work with all of you to keep Circle K the best student org to join on any campus, and continue to serve our communities. To all of our new members, welcome to the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District and welcome to Circle K! As the largest student-led collegiate service organization in the world, there are endless opportunities for you to get involved with all different kinds of service projects, gain leadership skills, and make lifelong friendships. And to all of our returning members, welcome back! I can’t wait to see all of you again at the Kiwanis Family Baseball Game September 30th and at the Membership Awareness Conference October 12-14th. We have such an exciting year ahead of us, and together we can achieve a lot. Good luck to everyone with the start of classes and let this be the best Circle K year yet! Yours in Service,

MEMBERSHIP IS SWEET:

MERP RECAP

This year’s Membership Education and Recruitment Program (otherwise known as MERP) was a success. The theme was candy and by golly, there was candy decorations everywhere and Willy Wonka’s great niece even came to visit the guests at Wonka’s World of WUMder. Guests spent the day meeting new people and making friends from different schools and learning all about membership and its importance to Circle K. The day started out with making coloring books to be donated to a Milwaukee library and then came a series of icebreakers. Members who came learned the importance of icebreakers during meetings but they also had a lot of laughs, especially during the Screaming Toes icebreaker. After icebreakers, board members started leading discussions on various topics, such as recruitment methods, organization fairs, the importance of the first meeting, and retention strategies to keep new members and old members alike.

4

These discussions gave everyone a lot to talk about and taught everyone new tips and tricks to gain and keep members in their clubs. There was a lot of talk amongst everyone about what they could do to help their clubs thrive. If you were unable to attend MERP, please reach out to WUM Membership Development and Growth Chair Deann Davidson at dcdavidson1997@gmail.com and she will be able to give you recruitment materials and tips to help get your club out the gates running in the new semester. Meet Your New Subregion C Trustee: Sean Nauss Hello! I am Sean Nauss, the 2018-2019 Subregion C Trustee. I work on the international level to represent the wants and needs of the best Subregion (Sub C). What is Subregion C? Sub C is a region of five districts lumped together based on geographic location. We have Illinois-Eastern Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, MinnesotaDakotas, and the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Districts in our region. Throughout the year I plan on showing up to as many District events as possible so if you’d like a chance to meet me be sure to go to all the events! A little about myself: I was born in Illinois, graduated high school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and currently attend Central Michigan University (Lower Michigan). I have been in the Kiwanis family for 6 years now starting with Key Club in high school. This year will be my fifth year in CKI. Throughout those five years, I have held positions across the board in both the Wisconsin Upper Michigan District and The Michigan District. Those positions ranged from Club to District committee chair, from club president to District Governor for Michigan, and now I am serving as your Trustee. I have done a lot in CKI but it wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of each member along the way. So make sure you get out there and serve with each other and make an impact in your communities because that’s what matters.

Have you all joined the SUB-C Facebook page yet?? If not I highly recommend you do. The Sub C Facebook page is a great location to learn about the happenings of all other districts in our subregion. This page will have content posted directly by me and others. I will be posting a podcast in this group monthly about different topics, the first being about membership recruitment, so make sure to check it out. Last year was the first year of the WASH project. Listed below are statistics on the impact our organization has made in the first year. 1. 1,233,500 people provided with safe water 2. 450,000 were sensitized to emergency hygiene practices 3. 5,800 hygiene kits distributed 4. 229 hand washing stations provided You may or may not have seen the announcement video but did you know that the International Board on its OWN has PLEDGED $6,000 to be raised by CKIx19?!!!! What are you doing to help the cause? For more information or to donate please visit https://www.circlek.org/wash. At any time throughout the year if you have any question please feel free to reach out to me at snauss14@gmail.com. Yours in Service,

Sean Nauss

PLAYGROUND BUILD AT CAMP WAWBEEK Easter Seals Camp Wawbeek provides an accessible environment for children and adults with disabilities. Through recreational opportunities individuals are able to gain more independence while being able to experience all the joys of going to camp. Twice a year the WUM Circle K district comes together at Camp Wawbeek to demonstrate our three tenants of service, leadership, and fellowship at our Membership Awareness Conference (MAC) in the Fall and Spring Fling in the Spring. Clubs from all over the district participate in workshops, fun activities, and service projects that benefit camp. Justin Hahn’s 2018 Kiwanis Governor’s Project was to fund and build an accessible playground that includes a Sway Fun Wheelchair Glider, which allows opportunities for all campers to play. This event was just as fun as it was rewarding. Members from across the Kiwanis family were able to see camp in action and meet some of the campers first hand. Two Circle K members, Jess Wells and Bobby King, participated in helping build the playground on Wednesday, August 15th. Over 60 volunteers from Kiwanis, Circle K, and Key Club, as well as campers from Camp Wawbeek, showed up for the community build and were able to construct the playground in one day. That same day Camp Wawbeek also celebrated their 80th anniversary. Funding for the Kiwanis Governor’s Project is still being accepted. Dear Kiwanians, Have you been wanting to check out the new Fiserv Forum, the new home of the Milwaukee Bucks? It is a beautiful facility! Well, have no fear.... On Sunday November 4th, the Milwaukee Bucks and Kiwanis are partnering together and providing a once in a lifetime experience. The Milwaukee Bucks have given us discounted group tickets to come and enjoy a game. A portion of these tickets will be donated toward the playground we just built at Camp Wawbeek in Wisconsin Dells. On top of that, if we sell 200 tickets, there will be an on court check presentation for the money raised moments before the game starts. If that is not enough, immediately following the game, all Kiwanians and guests who purchased tickets with us will be invited down to the court for on court photos.

How cool is that!!!!!!!!!!! The game starts at 2:30pm and the Milwaukee Bucks will be playing the Sacramento Kings. Our group tickets are guaranteed until October 13th. For more information and to purchase your tickets, check out this link: https://groupmatics.events/event/Kiwanisnight Get your tickets now before we sell out! If you have any questions, please let me know. Yours Through Service and Dedication,

TOP BRASS:

WHO’S WHO IN CIRCLE K Back in July at CKIx2018, a few of us from WUM voted along with representatives from a wide variety of locations. What came from hours of caucusing and Q&A sessions in Chicago at CKIx gave us our new International President Laura Belmont, International Vice President Julia Dressler, and Sub-C Trustee Sean Nauss as well as other trustees. Laura Belmont is currently a senior at Arizona State University where she studies genetics, cell, and developmental biology as well as medicinal chemistry. One goal as International President include the promotion for collaboration which includes working closer with trustees and committees while also revitalizing the information database available for all to use. Another major goal is to focus on membership and club needs. By working from the bottom up and strengthening clubs by providing the support they need, she believes CKI will benefit. Julia Dressler is a senior at Canisius College where she studies communication with a minor in business management and music. Some of her goals consist of bringing about more accountability by increasing International's presence with newsletters and outreach and increasing K-Family relations by developing a mentorship program and a Kiwanis Family task force focusing on membership. Sean Nauss is a student at Central Michigan University studying sociology. One of his goals as trustee is the promotion of Key to College materials to be used for targeting Key Club seniors to try and close the gap between Key Club and Circle K. Sean is not only leading our sub-region, but he also leads a new ad-hoc committee focusing on finances on the international level. These three students are some of the best that CKI has to offer, which is exciting. Their dedication to CKI along with the deep knowledge of how the organization works will surely move us into the right direction. By Bobby King

100 YEARS OF SERVICE:

KDCON RECAP Last weekend the WI-UM Kiwanis district celebrated 100 years of service in La Crosse. District Secretary Bobby King, Service Chair Jess Wells, and I attended the convention, where we met dozens of Kiwanians excited about service and making a difference. At lunch, the Kiwanis Club of Platteville received the Outstanding Kiwanis Support award for their dedication to their SLPs (Service Leadership Programs), including the Circle K club at UW-Platteville! Congratulations to the Kiwanis District on all their hard work and dedication, and the completion of another successful year! By Zoey Colglazier

CLUB HIGHLIGHTS: Alverno College faculty member, Joyce Tang Boyland, approached Alverno Circle K President Ashley Prondzinski during a Circle K lunch event and asked if Circle K could try a plastic bag collection drive, which sounded like a great environmental project for Earth Day 2018. Ashley got in contact with Trex Recycling for more information. Once Alverno's Board of Directors approved the collection bins throughout the campus and dorm areas from January through April 2018, along with setting up strict guidelines with the campus facilities manager, the company mailed Circle K collection bins to the campus at no charge. From there, members regularly checked the bins and stored them in Alverno's plant operations area. Several Circle K members and other volunteers would pick up the bags and drop them off at the nearby Pick ’n Save. Trex would pick them up from there.

18

ALVERNO COLLEGE Each month, Ashley would submit an estimated poundage amount of bags collected to her Trex contact. In order to receive the free bench for the campus, Circle K had to collect 500 lbs. of plastic. They estimated that a 30-gallon bag held 650 bags, which is about 8 lbs., so about 40,500 plastic bags were needed to be collected. Through campus flyers and social media posts, Alverno Circle K reached its goal by April 20th. Trex allowed Alverno to pick out the color of the bench and they shipped it to campus at no charge. Alverno's plant operations then set up the bench in the Alumnae Courtyard. By Ashley Prondzinski, Alverno Circle K President

OPEN DISTRICT BOARD POSITIONS We want YOU to serve your district!

Letter from the Editor Hello again! Have fall classes started already? Wow, the summer few by, didn’t it? I know that the responsibilities associated with school may be a drag for some of you, but look at the bright side: the start of fall classes means the start of Circle K meetings again! It’s time to catch up with all of your friends at your next meeting or service event. And don’t forget about all of the awesome district events coming up (such as MAC) where you can see all of your Circle K friends from other schools. A lot of people leave the district during the summer so for all of you who missed out on the amazing events and service activities that went on in WUM over the past few months, I hope this issue helped get you up to speed on what’s been happening. I, for one, missed absolutely everything because I was in Florida for an internship but the constant stream of pictures I got from everyone else kept me updated on all the fun times I was missing out on. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the latest installment of the Circle of Sharing. I’d like to give a huge thank you to everybody who helped make this issue possible! As always, if you would like to contribute to a future issue please feel free to email me! Yours in Service,

Luke Muller
