We also acknowledge our many more-thanhuman relatives, the original caretakers of our lands and waters, who call this region home, and have done so since time immemorial.
Finding the Meaning in Food
Taste the Local Difference is Michigan’s Local Food Marketing Agency. A social enterprise whose mission is to educate consumers about the value of local food while helping farm and food entrepreneurs build successful, well-connected and thoughtful businesses.
My understanding of food completely changed after my first visit to a small vegetable farm. Then, a college student, I considered food to be boring, inconsequential and bland—not just in terms of flavor, but in relevance and value to me.

I left the farm that day with more questions than answers. This sparked an interest in the dimensions of food I’d never noticed or cared about before. Since then, I’ve heard lots of stories about people’s evolving relationship with food. Most recently, I’ve seen the pandemic rapidly shift awareness about the value of local in a way nothing else could.

Our food system is complex; as we learn more about it, we recognize there are realities in this system that are bitter, just as there are some that are supremely sweet. Mindfully recognizing these different “flavors” of our food leads to a greater understanding, and eventually creates a stronger food system.

CANNING
Filling the freezer is a simple way to save summer’s bounty for the rest of the year. Almost all fruits and vegetables can easily be frozen using the tips below. Jams and sauces can also be frozen instead of canned.
Prefer your produce with a little zip? Pickles bring a boost of flavor to meals and are another great way to preserve vegetables. Pickling can be approached in two ways:
Low on freezer space, but nervous about canning? It’s not as hard as it seems follow these rules for canning safely.

INGREDIENTS
Preheat your oven to 350° F.
1 Tbsp olive oil
Add the olive oil and a pinch of salt to a pan and sauté the mushrooms for 5–6 minutes. Set aside.
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
In a separate bowl, crack the eggs and whisk with thyme and a pinch of salt and pepper.
¼ tsp thyme
Add half & half to the eggs and stir.
1 9" pie crust, par baked
Pour the egg mixture into your pie crust, then evenly distribute your mushrooms, sliced asparagus and cheese of choice.
½ cup asparagus, trimmed and sliced
Carefully place in your oven and bake for 30–40 minutes. Checking regularly in the final 10–15 minutes of cooking. You want the eggs to set, but to still jiggle just a little in the center.

“Good food culture does not infringe on the rights and responsibilities of others, all others, all beings, past, present and future and demonstrates respect for all while practicing gratitude for one's own food culture,” says Valoree Gagnon, Director of University-Indigenous Community Partnerships at Michigan Tech University’s Great Lakes Research Center. In the Upper Peninsula, Native American communities strive to maintain a relationship with their traditional foodways and support local food producers. Gagnon continues, “It’s the process of integrating food into identity and practice, rooted in webs of relationships.”

Together, Indigenous tribal members of the UP work towards a food system that celebrates their traditional foodways. Every bite of locally grown food comes from native lands, and a good local food movement not only respects other cultures, but learns from them, and more importantly, stands beside them. As Michigan continues to focus on a better food system, it also affects all aspects of local society. Gagnon concludes, “Food doesn't exist separately from the many dynamics of one's culture, the social, political, ecological, and so forth exists together.”
Manoomin, or wild rice, is deeply rooted in Anishinaabe culture. Uniting 12 tribes, the Michigan Wild Rice Initiative emphasizes the importance of manoomin within the community. Roger LaBine is a member of the Initiative and a Water Resource Technician for the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Band of Chippewa. He reflects on his annual traditions, “I believe that plants are a brother to me and all have a spirit, and when I don’t respect the manoomin, it can be taken from me. Everytime I go out and visit that bed, I offer that sign of respect and announce who I am and why I’m there. When I go out in the fall, the bed only gives me what I need and I only take what I need.” The labor intensive process of gathering and processing rice is done communally to ensure that everyone has enough. In the eastern UP, the Jiibaakwaan Production Ordinance was recently adopted in the Bay Mills Indian Community (BMIC). The ordinance manages food safety around foods of cultural significance that are prepared in a traditionally safe manner and promotes economic development. Connie Watson, the Bemidji Area Leaders Acting for Change (BALAC) Project Coordinator for the Bay Mills Indian Community, believes this regulation will increase access to these foods. “The ultimate goal is to decrease diabetes, heart disease and obesity. It’s our hope with making our traditional and local foods more available it will be an easier path to better overall health.” Roger LaBine, winnowing the manoomin.

RAVIOLI 4 zucchini 1 onion, diced ¼ cup olive oil 1 Tbsp minced garlic 1 tsp fresh thyme 1 cup fresh ricotta cheese or chevre 1 tsp salt ½ tsp pepper 1 cup microgreens RED PEPPER COULIS 3 bell peppers, roughly chopped 2 roma tomatoes, roughly chopped ¼ cup olive oil 1 clove garlic

DIRECTIONS Trim the ends off of zucchini. Using a mandoline, slice zucchini lengthwise into long ribbons about 1/8 inch thick. In a medium stockpot, add the ribbons to boiling water for about 1 minute or until zucchini is soft and pliable. Then, strain zucchini and rinse in cool water right away. Set aside. For the filling, sauté diced onions with olive oil until lightly browned, about 8 minutes. Add garlic, thyme, salt & pepper. Sauté a minute longer and place in a medium bowl and let cool slightly. Add ricotta or chevre to the onion mixture and stir to combine.
For the sauce, gently heat olive oil to a small sauce pot. Add the chopped red bell peppers and tomato, saute for 10 minutes or until the peppers look soft. Add garlic, salt, and vinegar. Place ingredients in a blender and puree on high speed until smooth. To assemble, take two of the zucchini ribbons and lay them over each other making an X. Place a spoonful of filling in each center and fold over the zucchini making a ravioli. Lay each ravioli, same side down in a lightly oiled baking tray and drizzle a little olive oil on top, repeat until all ravioli are made. Bake at 350° F for 10 minutes. Serve ravioli with red pepper coulis and garnish with micro greens!

for Kids From dietary recommendations to enticing picky eaters, there’s no shortage of information on how to get your kids interested in food. Navigating the plethora of information can be an overwhelming challenge for already time-strapped parents. But teaching healthy local eating habits can be easy, especially if you pick low-hanging fruit. Strategy is key. PICK SIX - Find your kid’s favorite crunchy veggies, breads, fresh fruits and cheeses that you can commit to always buying locally. Have your child be in charge of picking the items out and talk to them about where the products are from as you put them away. ONE A DAY - Talk about at least one local product that is incorporated into your meals each day (butter counts!). For an extra challenge, do this at every meal or snack. THINK DRINKS - In addition to water, Michigan produced milk, juice, and herbal teas are great options to keep the local conversation going. ‘JUST SAY NO’ TO THE KID’S MENU - Choose locally-focused restaurants and skip the kid’s menu altogether. Appetizers and small plates are a great way to explore new flavors with your little one. Implement a few of these strategies, and you might just end up raising a little locavore!

In 2019, almost 1,000,000 acres of Michigan farmland went unplanted due to heavy rainfall. With climate change, wetter and earlier springs, extended summer droughts, and colder winters have become the norm for farmers across Michigan. Growers are changing their practices to meet this new reality. “Growers just have to monitor continuously,” says Jeffrey Andresen, a climatologist expert at Michigan State University Extension. Tools like MSU’s Enviroweather and MI EnviroImpact help farmers anticipate conditions and inform critical decisions about when, where, and how to plant and harvest. Perennials like grapes, cherries, and apples are especially susceptible to the effects of climate change, Andresen says. In the case of colder temperatures, some farmers use fans to circulate warm air. Winemaker Coenraad Stassen of Brys Estate Vineyard and Winery near Traverse City, developed new techniques to keep his grapes warm through harsher winters. He ties his grape canes to irrigation lines on the ground before plowing snow over the canes, resulting in an 80% survival rate. “If you do the same thing you did 15 years ago, you're fighting a losing battle,” says Stassen. In the case of earlier springs, some farmers prevent early budding by spraying fruit trees with water to form protective ice cells. With continued warmer and more humid conditions, Nikki Rothwell, an Integrated Pest Management researcher with MSU Extension, has seen new pests and diseases, like fire blight and Spotted Wing Drosophila. Rothwell found that pruning trees and mowing in between them reduces the infestation by 40%. The extra light increases the temperature in the canopy and reduces humidity. “We’ve really gone back to doing more of these old-school tactics that are looking holistically at the whole system,” Rothwell says. Rothwell sees farmers diversifying their crops and systems “to spread the risk.” For example, a farmer may lose their cherries, but not their apples in a frost. Adaptation also includes choosing different varieties and adjusting planting schedules. Some cherry varieties bloom later in the season so they will not be affected by frost and freeze events. Row crop farmers are planting plants like soybean, wheat, and alfalfa that can utilize the increases in CO2 to produce more plant matter. With changing growing regions and seasons, some farmers are taking advantage of the upside of climate change. “We now have 10-14 extra days of a frost-free growing season on average that we did not have 50 years ago in Michigan,” Andresen says. “That typically translates into a higher potential yield.”

Serves 4 Total Time: 45min – 1 hr INGREDIENTS 2 acorn squash 3 Tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, diced 1 medium sized apple, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups fresh kale, chopped 1 Tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped 2 tsp fresh thyme, chopped 1 tsp Himalayan sea salt ½ tsp black pepper 1 lb ground pork 1 Tbsp Himalayan sea salt 1 Tbsp garlic powder 2 Tbsp Italian seasoning 3 Tbsp maple syrup ½ cup shredded or cubed medium white cheddar cheese (optional)

Preheat oven to 400°F.
Cut acorn squash in half and scoop out strings and seeds. Place halved squash cut side down on a baking sheet, add ½ inch of water to the baking pan. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the squash is tender.
While squash is baking, caramelize onions over medium-low heat by adding 3 Tbsp olive oil and onion to a frying pan. Stir every 5 minutes to prevent burning. After 15-20 minutes or when the onions start to brown, add apples. Cook another 5 minutes. Add kale, garlic, rosemary, thyme, 1 tsp Himalayan sea salt & ½ tsp black pepper and cook another 5 minutes. In a separate pan, cook ground pork in a pan over medium heat. Once pork is fully cooked, add 1 Tbsp Himalayan sea salt, 1 Tbsp garlic powder & 2 Tbsp Italian seasoning. Mix the onion mixture with seasoned ground pork and set aside until squash is cooked. Scoop squash out of the skin into a bowl and stir in 3 Tbsp maple syrup. To serve: Scoop squash into a bowl and top with the sausage mixture. Top with a pinch or two of cheese if desired. 51

THE ROSE GARDEN OF GREENS Ossineke
As the only one woman CSA farm owner in the region, Rose Bisanz’s farm provides more than 40 different varieties of vegetables to over 75 families. Her community supported agriculture program partners with flower shares from Falls Creek Produce and Flowers, mushrooms from Wandering Winds Farm, beef cuts from B&B Farms, pork from Standen Acres, and bread shares from Briar Hill Bakehouse. On top of growing and distributing, she provides food education classes at Performance Locker, one of the pick-up spots for her CSA. For Brendan Prewitt and Greta Jankoviak, farming is about more than just growing produce — it’s about obliterating the stereotype of struggling small farmers in rural communities. In 2014, they started as one small table at the Cheboygan Farmers Market, but now have expanded their market offerings and provide farm shares to over 200 members. Their growth can be attributed to their innovations, such as extending their season with hoophouses, investing in a commercial wash/pack space, and utilizing a self-serve mobile refrigerated trailer that houses CSA boxes for pick-up. Located on land that has been farmed by Jankoviak's family dating back to the late 1800's, their 5 acres of production primarily focus on sustainably grown produce, cut flowers, and vegetable plant starts. In the pasture, Brook Alloway and Ben Nowakowski let their cows be cows. Their cattle enjoy a great life while improving the soil before eventually becoming delicious food for people in their community. B&B beef and lamb are fed and finished on grass, making them healthier than grain-finished alternatives. These sustainable methods are better for the environment and the animals’ well-being. For many years, the Applewood Cafe, Mott Community College’s (MCC) culinary education restaurant, was hidden away on its main campus in Flint. With tables dressed in white tablecloths and starched navy blue napkins folded to look like swans or flowers, this facility was used to provide a high-end culinary education for thousands of students and a wonderful culinary experience for many guests. But, on January 23, 2020, the doors opened to the new home of MCC’s culinary institute, Applewood on Second and Saginaw. Inside the new building, the updated kitchen equipment will advance their students’ education in ways the prior facility had not. Inside the Second and Saginaw space, students will whip up chocolates in the chocolate confection room, master loaves in their new bakery, make homemade sausages in the meat lab, and deliver enjoyable meals from their new kitchen to the dining room. MCC instructor and Award winning Chef, Mathew Cooper, is excited to have this new facility. "These advancements support our partners,” says Cooper. “Our partners are our community. That's what community college is for." Many local businesses utilize these programs as building blocks for employee career development. In addition to associates degrees in Culinary Arts, Bakery and Pastry Arts, and Food Service Management, students can also earn a certificate in Professional Baking or Cooking. MCC’s Culinary Arts program fosters partnerships with local businesses and raises up chefs working throughout the state. As the sun began to set on a beautiful August night, the crew at Interwater Farms walked through the fields harvesting fresh peaches, hanging heavy on the trees. Joann Brown, a fourth generation farmer, employs 30-40 seasonal workers on her family farm each year. Many of these employees are related to one another and travel from Georgia to Northern Michigan every summer to work.
“We cherish their work ethic and friendship,” Brown says, “and we couldn’t do it without them.” At Interwater Farms, seasonal workers are appreciated like family, but more broadly in our food system, farm laborers—especially migrant and seasonal farm workers—are undervalued. Many face a lack of fair pay, limited access to healthcare, inadequate housing and transportation, as well as frequent acts of violence. This essential community has been fighting against these issues for decades despite their critical role in our food system.
Farming ranks among the top 10 most dangerous jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It requires risks and consequences not everyone is willing to shoulder. Without seasonal and migrant farm workers, there would be an even larger gap in Michigan’s agricultural workforce, and the industry itself—one of the largest in the state—would crumble. As the second most agriculturally diverse state in the country, Michigan produces approximately 45 different specialty crops with a market of over $100 billion annually. These fruits and vegetables need to be painstakingly, and patiently, hand harvested. Migrant Legal Aid reports there are over 94,000 migrant and seasonal farm workers in the state of Michigan that bring this food to our tables. We depend on farmers daily, but how often do we consider where our food comes from and who grew it? The COVID-19 pandemic is a timely reminder that we are all interconnected, that the health and safety of one person impacts us all. The same obvious truth is missing in our current food system. The policies in place don’t value the people who feed us. This lack of appreciation—in legal and physical protections, access to critical care, and decent wages—has long been a failing of our system and it’s time to address it. The spread of this virus highlights blatant issues in the status quo. It identified what and who are truly essential; farm laborers being chief among them. At first, the federal government temporarily suspended all new work visas, but later made special arrangements to process H-2A applications [seasonal guest worker program] after an outcry from farmers. The health of these farm workers became top of mind as ‘stay in place’ orders impacted travel plans and cramped communal living conditions raised concern as well. Across the country, over 2.5 million farm workers were deemed essential and sent to work to feed us during this global health crisis. However, a large majority of them are still fighting for basic human rights and fair pay. As eaters, we cast a vote for what we value with every bite. If we care about what we put in our bodies and the impact of food on our economy, then we should also recognize the value of the people that put it on our table. Their well-being is inextricably linked to our own.

• Tender winter greens (kale, arugula or mizuna), brussels sprouts, celeriac, turnips, parsnips, butternut squash and carrots.
• Tender summer greens (pea shoots, spinach or arugula), asparagus, carrots, peas, radishes, tomatoes, cucumber, green beans and cauliflower.
2 cloves of garlic, grated on a microplane
¼ pound (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 Tbsp dijon mustard
Place butter in a small pot on a medium-low burner. Once the butter has melted and a foam has risen to the top, take a small whisk and stir frequently to slowly caramelize the butter solids. The butter is done when it is golden and smells nutty. Transfer the butter and caramelized solids to a bowl to stop the cooking. Store leftover brown butter in the fridge.
• Wash and peel winter root vegetables and squash. Cut into bite size pieces and roast at 400° F with olive oil and a little salt, till softened and golden. Cool all vegetables before putting the salad together.
• Spring and summer vegetables are cleaned or peeled and cut into bite sized pieces. For some of the vegetables you might want to quickly blanch in salted water, like asparagus, peas, or green beans.
TO SERVE Top with: greek yogurt, brown butter, garlic vinaigrette, dried chile and fresh dill

Behind the scenes of grocery stores and supermarkets, food hubs are pivotal in local food distribution throughout Michigan. Managing the aggregation, distribution, and marketing of local food products, food hubs move products from the producer to the purchaser on a regional scale. The Michigan Food Hub Network fills a leading role in the collaboration of 10 active hubs across the state. Noel Bielaczyc is the Value Chain Specialist for the Center for Regional Food Systems of Michigan State University, and facilitates within the network to increase the distribution of local food across the state. “Every hub brings different strengths and capabilities to the network,” says Bielaczyc. “Together we’re working on shared projects that create win-win solutions.” One of their main focuses is to disseminate surplus product throughout the network by sourcing items from other hubs to fill gaps. Bielaczyc says, “Each food hub is in this work together, therefore there’s not a competition between them.” In West Michigan, food hubs like the Muskegon Food Hub and the ValleyHub in Kalamazoo are growing healthy, local food systems in their community. In the end, the buyer knows exactly where their food comes from, and the farmer profits more than they would through a mainstream supply chain. Started in 2017, the Muskegon Food Hub connects local producers to the restaurants, schools, the Age Well meals on wheels program, and other institutions
in Muskegon County. Food Hub Manager, Rose Spickler, shares that the biggest struggle for them is transportation. “Refrigerated trucks are expensive, and we’re working on programs to be able to get the food from the farm to the buyer.” Spickler says institutions’ demand for locally produced foods is increasing and the hubs are growing to meet this demand. Also established in 2017, ValleyHUB is a component of the Food Innovation Center at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. “Our #1 product is educational opportunities for food jobs,” says Rosie Florian, the ValleyHUB Outreach and Marketing Coordinator. “Our goal is to reinforce the idea that there are more jobs in the local food industry than chefs and farmers.” The hub operates an urban farm, processing facility, and education center. Students of all ages use the farm and food hub as classrooms to experience the wide range of food-related jobs within the fields of agriculture, culinary arts, and supply chain management. On the other end of their work, the processing system helps larger institutions, like hospitals and schools, drastically cut down on labor by providing cleaned and prepared produce. Collaboration within the Michigan Food Hub Network is strong, as they stabilize the logistics to streamline purchasing local products statewide. Food hubs are integral to our local food system and reinforce the necessary connection between farmers and buyers.

FINDING A TASTE OF PLACE Jason Lummen, owner and brewer at The Peoples Cider Co., has learned that when it comes to good cider, the secret is proximity. Since opening in 2012, he has fostered a close relationship with Hill Brothers Orchards, a family-operated farm a short 13 miles away from his production facility. Hill Brothers are settled on the Fruit Ridge, an agricultural mecca that grows more than half of Michigan’s apples. Beyond eating apples, the area lends itself to cider-specific varieties like Northern Spies, English Sharps and even a couple unclassified apples grown exclusively for Lummen. Unlike mass produced ciders from concentrate, Lummen’s ciders taste like a snapshot of our state. “There’s a huge difference and that comes down to the wine term of terroir, that taste of place that you find in wine,” Lummen says. “You’re going to taste what makes apples from Fruit Ridge better than apples from other places.” The proof is on the palate. Tannic and complex, Lummen’s ciders reveal an obvious respect for whole fruit. But arguably more important than the cider, Lummen’s support of local agriculture fuels our region’s biodiversity during a time when factory farms turn to shortcuts and monocultures. “A lot of Northern Spies are getting ripped out because they’re falling out of favor,” Lummen says. “Meijer won’t buy a bunch of Northern Spies because nobody makes apple pies anymore. Everybody just wants an apple for their lunch box.”
Of course, farmers need to turn a profit to survive and cideries on the whole aren’t large enough buyers to influence agriculture writ large, but the industry has taken measures to keep biodiversity alive. Two of Michigan’s largest cideries, Vander Mill and Virtue, stick to Michigan pressed juice, and another major player, Blake’s, runs their own orchard. Ultimately, committing to local is a win-win for cideries both for flavor and for the state’s economy. On a smaller scale, Lummen believes his connection to farmers markets creates a symbiosis between business and agriculture. Whether vendors donate stone bound peaches they cannot sell, to bartering cider for blueberries, his style harkens to a more communal version of business. And Lummen has a holistic philosophy regarding sustainability. That means sourcing equipment locally, like his Muskegon-made can seamer. It also means managing ambitions and making sure the company doesn’t over extend itself. While plenty in craft beverage have collapsed by trying to grow too large, Lummen sees the value in staying small and serving his community. So while you might have to travel to try his cider, the trips are worth the effort. The apples always taste best when they don’t fall far from the tree.

SNAP PEAS 2 cups snap peas — Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil, add snap peas and blanch for one minute. Immediately transfer to a bowl of ice water. Once cool, drain water and reserve peas.
S O F T P O L E N TA 1 ½ cups polenta 3 cups water 3 cups whole milk 1 ¼ cups parmesan cheese, grated 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 2 oz butter — In a heavy bottomed pot, combine water, milk, salt, and pepper, and bring to a boil. While constantly whisking, slowly add polenta. Cook over medium heat stirring frequently until the polenta is thick and creamy. Keep warm until ready to serve or cool and reheat with a little milk.

S E A R IN G T HE F I S H Flaky, white fish such as halibut or whitefish — Heat oven to 400° F. Dab fish filet with paper towel until dry and lightly sprinkle with salt. Heat a small amount of clarified butter or oil in a small sauté pan until very hot and smoking. Add the fish filet flesh side down and sear until golden brown. Flip fish and place the pan in the oven. Cook until fish is firm to the touch and just cooked through, about 5 minutes.
— In a small saucepan, heat 2 Tbsp oil, add onion and sweat until translucent, about 2 minutes. Add garlic and spices and cook briefly, about 30 seconds. Add rhubarb and remaining ingredients. Cook over low heat until rhubarb is completely tender and falling apart. Blend until completely smooth with an immersion blender, blender, or food processor.

Devon Wilson is proud of the food he grows on his farm in Battle Creek. After starting as an apprentice at Sprout Urban Farms, graduating from the MSU Student Organic Farm and recently buying land to start Sunlight Gardens, he’s proving that young farmers of color have a unique role in Southwest Michigan’s local food movement. “I am the person I would have looked up to when I was a little kid,” says Wilson. Battle Creek has always been home for the 23 year-old. Now, with his new farm he’s determined to give back to his lifelong friends and neighbors. “If we’re growing food we’re instilling power back to the community,” he says. He describes Sunlight Gardens as not only a beautiful block of his neighborhood, but a model for building prosperity and abundance. Through selling organic produce to restaurants, farmers markets, and wholesale outlets, Wilson wants to train other aspiring farmers of all backgrounds how to be profitable for themselves and their communities. On his own farm, Wilson is creating a business model that will include revenue from community-driven events where the hoophouses are used for workshops, concerts or farm-to-table dinners. He dreams of converting one of the sheds into a cafe style produce stand that accepts SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks currencies. Through Sunlight Gardens Wilson is making the path more accessible for younger generations from all backgrounds. “It should be cool to provide food for your family and community and know the source of your food.”

In 2019, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) launched Michigan’s first industrial hemp program, adding a new crop to the state’s farming community. Industrial hemp is one of the largest new opportunities for growers after it was legalized in the 2018 U.S. Farm Bill. Hemp is Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) with less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component found in marijuana. Hemp is cultivated to produce fiber, grain, biomass or non-intoxicating medicinal compounds like cannabidiol (CBD). Michigan is uniquely positioned to grow, process and manufacture industrial hemp as one of the nation’s most agriculturally diverse states. This emerging crop creates new opportunity for our farmers and offers an avenue for new businesses' development.

But it's newly regulated, and there is much to learn; such as what variety is best to grow in your region, or how and where to process hemp? The 2018 U.S. Farm Bill authorized the commercial production and processing of industrial hemp. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) published its interim final rules to establish a domestic hemp program in the fall of 2019. The Interim Final Rules provide guidance on federal requirements as states draft their hemp plans for approval. MDARD is currently reviewing the rules to identify needed changes to state law. Once statute changes are made, MDARD will submit its plan, and once approved, will provide oversight of the department’s commercial hemp program. In the meantime, MDARD is using its authority in the 2014 Farm Bill to continue the Industrial Hemp Ag Pilot Program into 2020. While there is a lot of excitement around the state’s newest crop, many questions remain on the long-term, overall regulation of hemp, CBD and hemp products. There is a steep learning curve for everyone involved in this budding commodity – farmers, federal and state regulators and local authorities. The 2019 and 2020 Industrial Hemp Ag Pilot programs have, and will continue, to provide an opportunity for all to learn. Michigan’s Public Act 641 of 2018 authorizes the growing and cultivating of hemp and requires the registration and licensing for those interested in growing, processing, and handling hemp. A grower registration is $100, and the processor-handler license is $1,350.

Michigan is home to over 300 farmers markets with new ones cropping up every season. While municipalities often organize these community markets, a new locale is creating space for social connection over local food: prisons. Prior to the privatization of the prison system, and their food service, Michigan Department of Corrections on-site prison farms and gardens were much more common. These spaces provided job training,
education, and a self-sufficient means for feeding the prison population healthy food. Today, food grown in the few remaining prison gardens may only be donated or, in a select few cases, consumed by the folks tending it. Of the three remaining prison horticulture training programs in the state, one is at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility (WHV). Through this program, 20-25 women a year are able to get their Pesticide Applicator License or Michigan Nursery Landscape License while practicing growing produce. They use their own garden bed to experiment with a variety of plants and growing conditions. Remaining space in the garden is dedicated to cultivating crops for Food Gatherers - a Washtenaw county hunger relief organization - and, new last year, an on-site farmers market, the Green Valley Market.
Green Valley Market is the first prison farmers market in Michigan.
“The farmers market provides the opportunity for our students to participate in a farm to market experience,” Ellen Baron, Horticulture Instructor at WHV says. Started in August 2019, the Green Valley Market is the first prison farmers market in the state. With support from MSU Extension and a variety of community partners, this farmers market allows inmates to sell everything from cabbage to zucchini to prison staff
while developing critical entrepreneurship skills. The market also provides a unique, positive opportunity for inmates to share their excitement and knowledge with prison staff. Money made at the farmers market goes directly back into the horticulture program for expansion of their year round growing options. Baron is proud of the engagement that this market creates between inmates and staff. “That involvement breaks down communication barriers and allows all involved to see the shared humanity in each other. It’s a beautiful thing!”

SMALL BATCH MAKES BIG IMPACT Detroit Food Academy (DFA) is an entrepreneurial non-profit working with local educators, chefs, and business owners to inspire young Detroiters through experiences rooted in food. From cooking healthy meals for friends and family to facilitating complex conversations within the community, students learn by transforming their ideas into reality. DFA offers free culinary entrepreneurship programs to students in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park. The academy teaches the fundamentals of cooking: knife skills, food safety, recipe scaling, business, nutrition, and food systems. Participating students create their own food-based projects, including creating and selling their own product at a local market. For advanced students, the DFA offers an intensive experience to scale their own unique, food-rooted project. This paid program teaches advanced culinary skills as they cook a multi-course meal for folks in the community, host a food fair, and teach cooking skills to their near-peers. Youth also gain food career experience working in our 3 youth-run Small Batch businesses: Mitten Bites granola bars, Slow Jams jam, and the Detroit Pop Shop gourmet ice pops. In summer, advanced students intern at good food businesses citywide, while also meeting regularly to design and launch new Small Batch products at local farmers markets, restaurants, coffee shops and retail outlets. Every sale of Mitten Bites, Slow Jams Jam, and Detroit Pop Shop directly supports wages and programming for our youth and alumni and funds the free programming we provide to 2,500 youth across Detroit.

Enjoy the season’s finest bounty through a sweet dessert in honor of our matriarch, Helen Lula, whose love for family is shown through good food that is carried on for generations. INGREDIENTS 2 cups flour 1 Tbsp cinnamon 1 tsp ginger ½ tsp nutmeg ½ tsp baking powder ¾ tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt ½ cup sugar ½ cup brown sugar Whole carrot, shredded 1 cup walnuts, chopped ½ cup dried cranberries 4 eggs 1 cup neutral oil FROSTING ½ cup butter 3 oz cream cheese 2/3 cup powdered sugar 3 Tbsp milk
DIRECTIONS
Mix all dry ingredients for the cake. Add in chopped walnuts, shredded carrot, and cranberries to dry mixture. Crack eggs in a separate bowl and whisk until combined. Add whisked eggs and oil to dry mix, mix well Oil two 6" round cake pans and pour in batter. Bake in a preheated oven at 325° F for 40-50 minutes. While the cake is baking, allow the frosting ingredients to come to room temperature. Use an electric mixer to beat butter and cream cheese together until fully combined. Add powdered sugar and continue mixing until combined. Add milk and mix until light and fluffy. When cakes have cooled completely, spread half of the frosting over one cake. Stack the other cake on top and spread remaining frosting to top the cake. Garnish with edible flowers or walnuts.
