Centenary Suburbs . Historical Society UPDATE BY LYNDA YOUNG, VICE PRESIDENT

Living in the Centenary suburbs in the 1800s – part 4 Another early settler to our area was Robert Wilson Henry who came from Ireland with his wife Frances and eight children in 1863. He was attracted to the colonies with its opportunities to own land, compared to home, where Robert worked on a duke’s estate as a boat builder and tenant farmer. In 1866, Robert owned property at Seventeen Mile Rocks just down from Centenary Bridge. Today his land is the site of Aged Care Queensland, townhouses and the Direct Factory Outlet. The fertile river flat land sustained maize, potato and pumpkin crops which were sold at the city markets and transported on the Brisbane River. Robert and his neighbour James Sinnamon also grew sugar cane successfully in the Seventeen Mile Rocks area. Robert, with his sons, continued a boat building trade, making row boats and flat bottomed, square punts for use on the river. He used his own boat one evening when local lads were firing shot guns from nearby, disrupting a church service being held in a settler’s house. Robert positioned himself on the river and fired shots over the lad’s roof then quickly rowed to a different position to avoid detection! There were no answering shots and church services were not disrupted again! Another anecdote handed down in the Henry family is of an encounter Robert had with an Aborigine who came to his door requesting money, in return for which he would bring him a bucket of honey. Hours went by and neighbours thought Robert had been cheated! Just on dark the agreed payment, honey in the comb, was handed over. Robert was active in the Presbyterian Church in Fig Tree Pocket but also founded the Seventeen Mile Rocks Orange Lodge, under warrant from the Grand Lodge Order of Ireland. A year after his arrival in the colony, his wife Frances, died in Ipswich, when she was only 40 and Robert walked from there to Fig Tree Pocket to break the sad news to his children. He never remarried and died in 1890 aged 70. He is buried in the Toowong cemetery. If you would like to know more about our early settlers visit our website, www.cshsoc.org.au.

Christmas is just around the corner and as the weather gets warmer, there is plenty of activity in our local community. Local charities and community groups are working overtime to ensure all western corridor families are able to celebrate Christmas with their families and it is always uplifting to see the generosity of the local community. It has been great to see so many high achieving students recognised for their hard work as I visit local schools for Graduations and Awards Ceremonies. This will also be the last year for year 7 students in primary school which means year 6 and 7 students are graduating primary school together. This year I hosted a Christmas Card Design Competition for my 2014 Christmas Card and the winner was eight year old Sophia from Good News Lutheran. You will be able to see the design on the Christmas Ripoll Report which will be delivered just before Christmas. Congratulations again to Sophia, I hope you enjoy your new bike over the Christmas holidays. This year the team and I have travelled around the electorate of Oxley to talk to the residents about what is happening in their local community. It has been great to talk to local residents while enjoying a free sausage sizzle and utilising the great parks and facilities we have in the Western Corridor. Keep a look out in your letter box for an invitation to Bangers with Bernie in your local area soon. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. If there is anything I or my office can assist you with over the next few weeks leading into Christmas, please call the office on 3879 6440. We will be closed from 22 December and will reopen on Monday 5 January 2015.

A caring and innovative Christian community

Supportive pastoral care At Good News, four core commitments set us apart from others. Christcentred values. Caring community. Excellence in education. An innovative learning environment. Together, these commitments ensure we provide a unique, well-rounded and quality learning experience for your children.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis

Christmas or Xmas? Personally, I really don’t like Xmas; I remember as a child seeing it used for an advertisement and thinking “Cross-mas. That doesn’t make any sense! You’re supposed to be happy not cross at Christmas.” Yes, I was a strange child...and clearly not too bright either! Now, it just annoys me because I generally dislike all abbreviations. Some people get offended, thinking this is another way for society to take the ‘Christ’ out of Christmas, in a season where the meaning is all but obscured by consumerism. It is not, in fact, a deliberate act to withdraw meaning from the season but the X has it’s origins as an abbreviation for Christ going way back to our Greek friends in days long gone. In advertising, I tend to think it’s a matter of trying to make a longish word fit; and in handwriting, I’m sure it’s because we would all rather be lazy! Neither of which are looking to take the meaning of the word away but are instead, focused on convenience. You see, the only way for meaning to be extracted from something is if the observer or participant allows it to be taken. How the word is written should have no bearing on how we all perceive it, or, for that matter, enjoy and celebrate it. It’s easy not to focus on the real meaning of Christmas at Christmas time. It’s busy. It’s hot. The kids are home on holidays (and are quite possibly bored and exhausting!). A host of family get-togethers are organised. Food needs to be prepared. Presents need to be bought. And on it goes. Yes, it’s very easy to just let the meaning of the whole thing slide right on by without a second glance. Yet, finding a little time to contemplate the ‘reason for the season’ might just help you get through all that busyness with a smile. Acknowledging that it’s a season of peace, of love and giving can stop us in our busyness and give us pause, reminding us that there is more to life than presents, food and endless streams of family and guests. If we do take the time to think about it a little, and allow the real meaning of the baby born in a manger to sink in, we might find that it can impact more than just the Christmas season. We might find that it can make a very real difference to the coming year. It might change us so that our relationships are enriched, our lives are fuller and that longing within all of us to have purpose and meaning is finally fulfilled. Will you pause this Christmas? Will you step aside to ponder and really think about what it all means? I hope you do. And I hope you find peace, love and joy not only this Christmas season, but your whole life long.

Front L-R: Nicola Ernst, Helena Turner, Julia Radley, Edith Grayson, Amy Gross. Back: Leaders – Lisa Abell and Kathleen Fraser. Absent: Stephanie Tame On Sunday 2 November, six Girl Guides from Jamboree Heights district were excited to receive their Junior BP Award at the John Oxley Region awards ceremony. Congratulations to Nicola, Helena, Julia, Edith, Amy and Stephanie. Within the Girl Guides Australia program there are three achievement Awards for Guides to work towards – Junior BP, BP and Queen’s Guide. Each award is assessed and challenges the Guide by encouraging them to extend their skills and abilities in different areas of the Program. For the Junior BP, at least 12 activities must be complete across six areas of the program. Some of the challenging activities the girls undertook included: learning some Morse code; writing and performing a skit; scavenger hunt; planning and facilitating a Promise ceremony for new members; constructing useful items from everyday materials; learning a variety of knots, and supporting local charities through donation of time and/or items. Some of the girls have been working on this award for two years or more, so it was a proud moment for them to have reached their goal and receive their award. Leaders and families attended the event with awards being presented by Robyn Hulbert, Assistant State Commissioner, Girl Guides Queensland. Guides and their families would like to thank John Oxley Region for a lovely afternoon and express enormous gratitude to the girls’ Leaders, both past and present, for their unfailing support as the girls worked through the program. The dedication shown by these amazing women and the enthusiasm the girls show for Guiding is admirable. Jamboree Heights Girl Guides will have vacancies in 2015 for girls aged 10-12. Younger girls can be put onto a waiting list. If you are interested in having a trial and/or signing up, please email jhguides@gmail.com. The huts are located on MacFarlane Street, Middle Park, in the park between the school and church.

Kiwanis will again be providing a sausage sizzle at this year’s Salvation Army Christmas Carols. The Kiwanis Club of Brisbane will support the Salvation Army Christmas Carols again this year with funds to ensure the camels, donkeys and sheep will be available for the nativity scene, a major feature of the Christmas celebrations. Kiwanis has been involved for some years, providing a sausage sizzle for those people attending the Carols. A cheque for $1,750, the profits from last years BBQ was presented to the Centenary Salvation Army at a recent Kiwanis meeting, to meet the cost of hiring the animals. Interest in the Carols has continued to grow over the past twenty years, with an estimated three thousand people attending last years Christmas celebration. The Carols will be held at Peter Lightfoot Oval, Middle Park on Sunday 7th December commencing at 6pm. In a lead up to the Christmas Carols, a twilight market will be available at the venue from 4pm. Kiwanis will once again be providing a sausage sizzle and drinks. Chelsea Hutley (left) and Erin Sorrenson lend a hand to Centenary Meals on Wheels. A small group of Girl Guides from Jindalee District came together to lend a helping hand to the long established Centenary Meals on Wheels. As part of their promotion drive to highlight their services in the Centenary Suburbs, the Centenary Meals on Wheels are distributing promotion cards to local residents. With over 8,000 cards to be delivered, Jindalee Girl Guides offered to assist by delivering some of the cards to letterboxes in the area. The group, lead by Chelsea Hutley have been spending their time during the school holidays, after school and on weekends pounding the footpaths to deliver the cards. Assistant Secretary of the Centenary Meals on Wheels, Mrs Jennifer Sorrenson, expressed appreciation for the service the group of Girl Guides were providing and also stressed the importance of the community reaching out to our residents in need. Chelsea said it was good to help an organisation like Meals on Wheels and the girls have been enjoying getting out and about in our local community. If you are interested in finding out more about Girl Guides, contact Judi Noble on 3376 4100 or by email at judi@elbon.com.au. Girls are able to ‘come and try’ a couple of meetings before deciding to sign up. Vacancies available in 2015 for all age groups from six years of age.

School Presentations With the end of the year approaching, I have had the honour of attending our school presentations and what a pleasure they have been to share in. Our young people are so impressive, and with so many talented students in our midst, I think our future is looking bright. I am sure many great achievements will emerge from our local area. Kids in Care Some children are not so fortunate with just over 8,000 Queensland children and young people in foster, kinship or residential care. To help ensure these children know that they are being thought of this Christmas, we are aiming to collect enough Christmas gifts for these kids. The appeal runs from 19 November to 5 December. So please, spare a thought for these kids and donate a gift. For more information and for drop off points please vist: www.communities. qld.gov.au/childsafety Keep your pets healthy and happy this Christmas CEO Mark Townend and the volunteers at the RSPCA Animal Care Centre at Wacol made me feel very welcome when I visited with Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie earlier this month. We discussed pet and animal safety, and how important it is for us to plan ahead for the care of our pets over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. It is especially important if you are considering a new pet as a Christmas present it is a good idea to talk to a professional before making any purchases. Mark’s top pet care tips are: • Remember not to feed your pets table scraps during the Christmas period. • Christmas time is summer time, so take a break from celebrations to check your pet has plenty of clean water. • If your pets spend most of their time outside, make sure they have a shady place to escape from the sun. For more pet care tips, visit www.rspcaqld.org.au. Drive to Survive With the festive season so close, I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to avoid the fatal five, so please; don’t speed, avoid drink driving, don’t be distracted by your phone, wear a seatbelt, avoid driving while fatigued and take regular breaks. Your life and the life of all road users are precious so let’s all arrive safe in 2015. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Hello Readers St John’s students are being well prepared for their role as global citizens in the 21st Century. It is our desire to assist our students, not only in achieving their very best academically and seeing them thrive in the cultural, sporting and social aspects of our school community, but also introduce to them to a global community through enhancing our teaching programs. To be successful as adults in the workplace and in community life, our students will not only need to be highly literate in English and Mathematics, but they will also need to learn more about other countries than text books can provide. Real world experiences will teach them to be culturally sensitive, socially and emotionally competent and able to work in multi cultural teams. All of these skills are being developed in St John’s students.

This year we have further developed our sister school links with Chinese schools in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Tianjin. On a recent school trip to China, our students spent time in these sister schools visiting classrooms and working together with Chinese students. This real life experience generated a lot of interest and excitement for our travellers.

A place for INNOVATION

A partnership with our sister school in Shenzen, China presently sees primary aged students from Shenzhen Nanshan Bilingual School spend an entire term in our Primary classes, immersed in English lessons and conversing with our students. This program also allows the children from St John’s to practice their Chinese speaking skills as well as gain a greater understanding of the Chinese culture.

St John’s is a collaborative, online, interconnected learning community.

Two St John’s students were selected to travel to Tokyo and regional cities this year to participate in the Jenesys 2.0 Cultural Appreciation Program. Links with Kobe University Secondary School in Japan are also being established by St John’s.

Our teachers motivate their students to use new technologies, to source real time information and to create and publish their work. They are being well prepared for a rapidly changing future.

As part of our commitment to developing deeper understandings for our staff and students in Chinese language and culture, our partnership with the Confucius Institute based at the University of Queensland has enabled our Head of Humanities Dr Odendaal to travel to Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin experiencing the Chinese language and culture first-hand. A volunteer teacher Judy Xiao from Shanghai University has also worked with small groups in our Chinese language classes in the primary and secondary classrooms to develop their speaking and listening skills. First book of trilogy is a dream come true For many, working full time and living one’s dreams don’t often go together but for local author, Peter Ship, writing as a hobby at night and on weekends has produced a published novel. The idea for an action adventure novel struck Ship while on holiday in London, steeped in its rich history and the close proximity to the royal family. The first in a trilogy, McNiven: The Kingdom Guardian, follows the life of McNiven a royal security chief who risks his life to save his mistress while averting an impending war. Set in 2037, McNiven provides personal security for the reigning Monarch of the United Kingdom, a position his family have fulfilled for 500 years. Following a devastating terrorist attack on London that leaves almost 400,000 people dead, Queen Penelope secretly unleashes McNiven to track down the terrorists and destroy their plans for additional attacks. The Queen becomes a target for the terrorists and is betrayed by members of her family and staff. There is non-stop action stretching from Hastings in the south to the highlands of Scotland and across the channel into Europe. Unexpected twists and events are bound together by the twin threads of romance and loyalty as McNiven hunts those responsible for the destruction and deaths that were a smokescreen for an even more sinister plot to make London the capital of Western Europe. McNiven races against time to unmask the terrorists and saves the lives of the Queen and the G8 leaders. The second book in the McNiven series, called One Hope is already well underway, with the third book still in the research stage. Ship was determined to head into impending retirement with a plan and a purpose, so began writing the novel while on holidays. “I succeeded in writing around 10,000 words with my two finger typing. After that I wrote 1000-1500 words at night instead of watching television and then for a couple of hours on weekends,” he said. “If I had a busy day at work then sometimes I wouldn’t write. The secret for me is to not place pressure on myself by committing to a fixed finishing date. It has to be a pleasure like any hobby and then I can be creative. All up it took about eighteen months.” To purchase McNiven: The Kingdom Guardian in time for Christmas, simply go to Amazon or buy direct from the website mcniventhekingdomguardian.com. Peter Ship can be contacted by sending an email to guidinglight@y7mail.com.

CENTENARY

National Seniors

Update by Marlene Worthington, Branch President

We thank Centenary News for helping raise people’s awareness of Senior’ activities within the Centenary area. We wish them and their readers a Merry Christmas and a happy 2015. Our Club members also wish to thank our hard working committee who are the backbone of all our activities. The December General Meeting will be held at the Jindalee Bowls Club on Tuesday, December 2, commencing at 9.30am with “the cutting of the cakes ceremony.” This will be followed by a short meeting and then morning tea before we draw all the Christmas Food Hampers. Last year we raffled off 39 Hampers – how many will there be this year? Our Evening Christmas Dinner will be held on 17th December at the Monier Hotel at Darra, and I’m sure our Christmas lunch on 25th November will be a great success as we have over 90 members attending at the Jindalee Golf Club and will be entertained by ‘Tim & Maggie’s Baby Boomer Band’ and then set to dance the afternoon away after a delicious lunch. Steady Steps exercise classes continue on 1st, 8th and 15th December at 9am at Middle Park Uniting Church Hall. We then take a short break over Christmas and resume classes again in January. We really have to work hard at keeping the waistline down after all the rich food. Our MahJong members meet at the Mt Ommaney Library on 4th and 11th December at 9am. They continue over Christmas and meet again on the 8th January 2015. Our mystery coach trip was a special surprise for our end of year trips and we still have the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Concerts to look forward to before we finally wind up the year of 2014. The first General Meeting for 2015 will be held at the Jindalee Bowls Club on 3rd February commencing at 9.30am when we welcome back all our members for another year of varied activities and also greet any new Seniors who would like to join our group. Did you know that we are one of the largest National Seniors Clubs in the Brisbane area, yet we still have people reading this monthly article and coming to join with us. If this article has spiked your interest, please contact me on 3279 1444 and I can give you more detailed information about joining our Club. I’d love to hear from you. Fat cats - some food for thought

As the owner of a naturally greedy cat, I have much sympathy for those owners struggling to keep weight off pets often in spite of feeding their prescribed special low-cal diet. Tid bits are generally blamed and in some cases this might be true but frequently it is the larger diet that is problematic. Modern pet foods, for better or worse, are formulated to be highly energy dense, very digestible, compact, dehydrated and can be swallowed rapidly. Animals are programmed to survive and so never know when dinner will be next available. This may not be a problem for a nervy, picky eater or the highly active working dog but its a double edged sword for the rest. Firstly, unlike humans, dogs and cats as carnivores tend to metabolise protein rather than carbohydrate for energy so have a lower glycaemic tolerance. Carbs are added more for technical manufacturing reasons (to extrude the dry pellets), medical reasons (as a non digestible fibre prebiotic), or mostly commercial reasons. Corn meal is way cheaper than meat. Carnivores nevertheless will eat according to protein requirements rather than the calorie content so, when maintained on lower quality plant cereal protein simply consume a greater quantity of food and, thereby, more calories. Typically, an overweight pet would then be switched over to the lower energy density high fibre ‘weight loss’ version of the diet. This sounds logical but further diluting the protein content with fibre does not satiate carnivores and can actually be counterproductive if they need to consume more of the low cal food or, worse, draw upon their own muscle protein reserves and lay down fat instead. My second concern is that rapidly swallowing dry concentrates does not truly stimulate chewing receptors that help signal fullness. Pets will chew as much for entertainment and gum exercise as hunger, so offering hide or meaty bone will fill this need. Also rather than meat making pets more aggressive or hyper as the old wives tale suggests, it’s just the opposite. Consider the lazy lions sleeping on the plain after a big feed of antelope or us after a large steak meal. Lastly, because moist food or meat is 75% water, one stomach full of kibble equates to four stomach fulls of meat which can easily facilitate overfeeding if care is not taken. Tips for feeding overweight cats: • If feeding dry kibble, choose a meat not cereal based product and don’t overfeed. Good examples include Iams, Nutro or Eukanuba. • Consider replacing part or all of the dry kibble with a quality balanced meat based wet food like BARF or Raw for Paws. • Feed some meat on the bone like a chicken wing regularly to encourage chewing. • Encourage cats to exercise with games and toys. • The metabolism naturally slows after adolescence and also with neutering so reduce food accordingly! Pups and kittens should be a little “rib-ey”...they will fill out later!

Independence Day for Centenary, Jindalee and Oxley State Schools The four news magazines of Local News Publications cover 30 suburbs south of the Brisbane CBD, allowing you to target the local area best suited to you and your business.

Centenary, Jindalee and Oxley State School students will have more opportunities to achieve better results and increase their job prospects as part of the LNP Government’s plan to give more state schools a greater say in how they are run. Mount Ommaney MP, Tarnya Smith has congratulated Centenary State High School, Jindalee State School and Oxley State School on being named among 50 Queensland state schools to become Independent Public Schools next year. Tarnya Smith said the local schools were selected from more than 80 expressions of interest statewide and would be three of 130 total Independent Public Schools in Queensland next year. “With greater input from parents, teachers and community members, these locals schools will have more freedom to shape their own direction and make decisions that will directly benefit their students,” Tarnya Smith said. “I’ve already seen the great achievements of Corinda State High School and Middle Park State School, that became Independent Public Schools in 2014 and have no doubt that Centenary State High School, Jindalee State School and Oxley State School will follow in their footsteps. “We’ve now decided to extend our target to 250 Independent Public Schools by 2017, so even more local schools will have a chance for more autonomy under this government. “This is all part of our strong plan for a brighter future for Queensland’s education system, because we know that a strong education means jobs for our kids.” Centenary State High School, Jindalee State School and Oxley State School will all receive an additional $50,000 to assist with the change and an extra $50,000 in funding each year for administrative purposes.

VIEW ladies prepare for the Christmas Wrap Centenary Evening View Club ladies are practising their parcel wrapping skills in preparation for one of their major fund raising activities, gift wrapping at the Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre. The ladies have already covered dozens of boxes for odd shaped gifts and made hundreds of ribbon bows and gift tags to ensure the gifts they wrap will look amazing. VIEW ladies will be gift wrapping from the 11th to the 24th December, so look for them in the VIEW purple aprons. A gold coin donation per parcel will ensure the best wrapped gifts in Brisbane and funds will go to The Smith Family to help fund education for disadvantaged children through the Jan Bell and club president Linda Austin practise their Christmas gift wrapping skills.
