On 25 April, we will once again gather as a community to honour those who have stepped up to serve in the Armed Forces on ANZAC Day. Some years ago, a few social commentators believed that our society was less supportive of ANZAC Day and some were even forecasting that this important Australian tradition was becoming a thing of the past. However, the attendances at the last few ANZAC Day Services in Forest Lake would indicate that these pessimistic forecasts were way off the mark.

There is a wonderful sense of community and solidarity on ANZAC Day. People of all faiths, creeds and colours come together to say “Thank you” to those who have served us in uniform. These moments of community are particularly important in the development of our kids. These events show our children that we all have a role to play in the success and health of our community. It teaches them that, if we want to see our communities go well, we can’t sit back and wait for others to do the work – we must step up and take our part in the community.

This is in direct opposition to the growing narcissism and individualism of our Western Society where the individual seems to have become more important than the community. A friend of mine is Sudanese and I was recently speaking with him about some significant personal successes he has had. What struck me is that he really did regard his own personal successes as comparatively unimportant to the challenges faced by his own immigrant community. I realised that our Western individualism has come to trump our collective identity.

So, events like ANZAC Day become important as they remind us that we are all part of a whole. As John Donne wrote, No man is an island, Entire of itself, Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main.

In the Bible, the Apostle Paul likens the Church to a body, with every person a member thereof (1 Corinthians 12:27). This was a picture that Paul had borrowed from the ancient Greeks who talked about community being the “body politic.” We accomplish more when we work together than when we’re apart.

So, let me encourage you to bring your family to the ANZAC Day parade and service, talk to your children about what it all means and show them the example of a community coming together. Invest in the next generation by investing in the community.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis This year, I began working with a friend who has started her own business called CCA Creative, Caring for Carers. Basically we facilitate training on the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) as well as providing weekends away for parents and carers of a loved one with a disability.

On the weekend retreats, we have a number of ‘icebreaker’ games to get conversation flowing and give people the opportunity to share with others, in similar circumstances, experiences they have dealt with over the years.

One particular ‘starter’ was “Name a defining moment in your life and how it changed you”. There was one answer that was given that kept going around my head for the rest of the weekend. One lady spoke of how her husband’s sudden death had brought clarity to her life and that as a result, she doesn’t stress or worry about one single thing anymore. The whole of life had been brought into perspective and given her a new way of looking at the world.

Wow. That really hit me. When you have faced a top of the list fear like losing a loved one, it makes the things we tend to worry about insignificant.

When I was thinking about the huge life lesson this woman had learnt, it struck me that we don’t have to wait for these experiences to happen to us, for us to learn from them. Certainly, we learn through our own experiences but we can also learn from others. What a wonderful way to honour the passing of someone else’s loved one by learning to appreciate and value the important things in life.

Far too often, we seem to only learn from things that happen to us - and sometimes not even then! Imagine if we actually really listened to advice given to us by a person who has lived through circumstances we haven’t had. Imagine if we then put that advice into practice. And then imagine what our lives might look like.

It seems to be that some of us do this quite well, while others of us must experience firsthand everything before learning from it. Personally, I hope I’m more often in the first category and that I learn from other’s lessons instead of having to go through everything myself. I think if we can do that, then when some of those hard lessons, such as losing a loved one, do happen, we are more prepared and equipped to deal with them. If we have learnt from another that nothing is more important than the ones we love and we cherish and appreciate them while they are with us, if the worst happens then we know we have truly loved them fully and won’t have as many regrets. And if the worst doesn’t happen, we get to live a life full of rich relationships and real connection with those we love.

Thanks to this special lady for sharing her story on our Carer weekend away. The lesson she offered us was the first of what I suspect, will be many lessons I can learn from the amazing men and women I’ll come into contact with through CCA Creative. And I’m not going to waste them.

Unique partnership brings results for youth When local resident Steve Scott decided to participate in the St Vincent de Paul’s CEO Sleepout in 2013, he had no idea that it would lead to his company being instrumental in helping teenagers in partnership with St Vincent de Paul.

Steve, through his company Laurus Enterprises, started the Young Guns Australia program in 2010, which provides pathways for young people to become leaders within their communities.

“During my second CEO Sleepout in 2014, Vinnies CEO Peter Maher OAM told me that I could do more than simply attend the event and raise money. He invited all CEOs to do more by using our skills where we could to assist Vinnies staff and volunteers,” said Steve.

“I decided to approach a Vinnies staff member with a view to seeing whether there might be a fit for my younggunsaustralia youth leadership program. It seems there was a fit and to cut a long story short, Vinnies contacted me a couple of days after the Sleepout and within a few days, I was meeting with Cassandra Bull and the Queensland State Youth Team at the Vinnies’ offices.

“It took us no time at all to agree for me to facilitate three programs; the first to Vinnies staff in November 2014, the second to Vinnies volunteers in April 2015 and a third in September 2015, a camp for teenagers who seek the support of the State Youth Team through their Sense programs.

“For the next four months I collaborated with Vinnies staff and Dave Jorna from Project Hatch to account for the unique sensitivities of these teenagers and design a three day camp program with the sole purpose of empowering them to take control of their lives in spite of the adversities and challenges they may encounter in their day to day environment.

“We had one clear objective – to ignite the belief in them that they could discover and achieve their potential. We had to do this with a very concentrated mentoring program and agreed to use the younggunsaustralia mentoring model that has proven to be very successful with the Year 11 and 12 student leaders previously.”

With the third retreat planned for September this year, Steve has high praise for the St Vincent de Paul volunteers and staff.

“To say the volunteer mentors are a stunning collection of extraordinary young Australians would be an understatement. The job was certainly made easier by Vinnies staff who worked 24/7 in the background to keep the camp running.”

by Dr Paul Holliday A healthy mouth may keep your brain healthy There are several things scientists think may lead to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Like all types of dementia, Alzheimer’s is caused by the death of brain cells.

It is a progressive disease that shrinks the brain in size and slowly decreases the nerve cells and their connections.

Risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s include age, family history and genetics, head injuries, sleep disorders like Sleep Apnoea and factors that affect blood flow like diabetes, hypertension, stroke.

A new study jointly led by King’s College London and the University of Southampton, has found a link between gum disease and greater rates of cognitive decline in people with early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

The team of researchers studied people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, and followed them for six months.

At the beginning and end of the study, the dental health of the subjects was assessed, and the researchers took blood samples and assessed them for inflammation. They also did cognitive tests at the start and end. Compared with people who did not have gum disease at the start, those who did were found to have a six-fold increase in the rate of cognitive decline during the study.

What is more, subjects who had gum disease at the start showed an increase in blood levels of pro-inflammatory markers over the follow-up period. Based on their findings - and those of previous research - the team suggests that gum disease may increase the rate of cognitive decline by increasing the body’s inflammatory response.

“We also believe, based on various research findings, that the presence of teeth with active gum disease results in higher body-wide levels of the sorts of inflammatory molecules which have also been associated with an elevated risk of other outcomes such as cognitive decline or cardiovascular disease.

“Research has suggested that effective gum treatment can reduce the levels of these molecules closer to that seen in a healthy state,” said Dr. Ide, first study author.

The researchers recommend that the association between gum disease and cognitive decline is investigated in a larger study to confirm the link. Further studies, they say, should also seek to determine the exact mechanisms by which gum disease drives cognitive decline.

This doesn’t confirm anything yet but adds to the weight of evidence that suggests any gum disease is a problem for healthy living. Gum disease can be treated and prevented.

A small amount of money pays for a cataract operation which sets someone free from blindness for life!

Missionaries of the Poor are an Order of Brothers who have established a school for poor children in Indonesia, providing the children with food and clothing as well as an education. All donated funds will go straight to the children.

April is Autism Awareness Month and Autism Queensland has launched its annual Go Blue for Autism campaign to raise funds and awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a lifelong developmental disability that affects one in 100 Australians.

Registrations are now open at www.goblueforautism. com.au for individuals, families, schools, workplaces and community groups across Queensland to take part in the Queensland-wide event by dressing in blue or hosting Go Blue events on their chosen day in April.

The Go Blue for Autism website also includes news and events from around Queensland as well as promotional materials for download, with social media driving much of the campaign each year.

Internationally, World Autism Awareness Day is observed on 02 April every year and marks the start of Autism Awareness Month in Australia and Go Blue for of Autism in Queensland.

Autism Queensland’s CEO Rod Cameron said 110 Go Blue events were held across metropolitan and regional Queensland in 2015.

“Go Blue for Autism is now in its fifth year and 2016 is already off to a flying start with more than a dozen Go Blue events registered since the start of February,” he said.

“Anyone can Go Blue, either individually or as a group and their fundraising activities can be as simple as collecting a gold coin donation per person for dressing in blue or by selling Go Blue merchandise which we have available for purchase or by consignment.

“You can also organise a Go Blue fundraiser at your school, workplace, sports club or community group and donate the proceeds to Autism Queensland,” Mr Cameron said.

Autism prevalence in Australia is on the rise with the condition now more common than cerebral palsy, diabetes, deafness, blindness and leukaemia put together.

In Queensland, there are over 10,000 school aged children living with Autism.

Autism Queensland run Queensland’s only autismspecific schools at Brighton and Sunnybank and delivers services from its centres, as well as Early Intervention Centres and outreach services which visit all schools in Queensland as well as providing support in the home.

Thirty-two members made up the Oxley field on February 28. Because of our good numbers, the Oxley Starter had to split our members into two groups to be able to fit us all into their very busy morning schedule. Nevertheless, we all managed to have an enjoyable game and be able to get back to the 19th watering hole in good time.

The club welcomed back several members who we hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen for a while â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Darryl Gore and Kyle Fairweather. Judging by the Stableford scores most members struggled with the course with only two members beating their handicap. The greens were pretty slick but true, however the fairways gave some inconsistent lies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for those good enough to hey them!

Winners on the day were â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A Grade Brian Cruickshank on 38 points and runner-up Dan McKay on 32 points; B grade Greg Smith on 37 points and runner-up Atul Bhardwaj on 34 points; C Grade Shiva Kumar on 29 points and runner-up Kirrily MacDonald on 29 points just missing on a count back. Today Kyle Fairweather, Murray Diaz, Don Mitchell and Kirrily MacDonald won the Long Drives. Bob Brose won the Nearest the Pin and the Nearest Approach exponent was Mick Morley â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it had to be a fabulous shot to knock off Greg Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really good effort. So congratulations to all prizewinners today.

The clubs next game will be the Windaroo Lakes game on 10th April starting at 6.30am. Recently elected new President of Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch Stuart Bradley, a Vietnam Veteran, is pleased with the response from year 10 and 11 students at Glenala and Forest Lake State High schools and St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s College. Mr Bradley said more than 20 essays had already been submitted for the ANZAC Day essay competition â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;What ANZAC DAY means to meâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; which closes on April 15th and carries prizes valued at $1,000.

Mr Bradley said the recent election of the Board provided several new, and younger faces, which means it should facilitate the consideration of new initiatives. The recently opened Forest Lake Community Centre was the venue for the March Board meeting at which it was announced that the RSL Sub-branch will now seek incorporation.

Three new sub-committees were formed. Former President George Churchward heads up the very important Welfare and Advocacy committee which looks after the needs, not only of serving ADF personnel, but also the needs of returned ADF personnel from recent conflicts. Steve Ford is Chair of the committee co-ordinating major commemorative events such as ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day whilst David Grant Chairs the Social committee responsible for liaison with other defence organisations, social activities and public relations. Last month we saw Queensland Women’s Week, our week-long celebration of the achievements of women and girls in the community. This was highlighted by International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women. It was a pleasure to attend the 2016 Brisbane International Women’s Day Breakfast with some wonderful local community volunteers and leaders.

It may be almost six months away but it is time to start preparing for our Welcoming the Babies festivities, where we celebrate the youngest members of our local community.

Held in conjunction with the wonderful South West Progress Association, 2016 will see the ninth edition of the annual event, and this year we’re hoping to see more community Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk with community volunteers and leaders involvement than ever before. As always, the at the recent Women’s Day Breakfast. celebration will feature fun, food and face painting, and every baby will receive a welcoming certificate and a gift bag. Parenthood can be a daunting process, so parents will also have a chance to speak with local organisations that specialise in answering questions about raising the next generation of Queenslanders. Please contact my office if you would like to express interest as a parent or community organisation who would like to get involved.

The Probus Club was back again at their temporary venue, Durack/Inala Bowls Club, where the Club ladies supplied us again with a delectable morning tea. It was tasty sandwiches, crumpets with jam and cream, cake, all home-made that put us into such an extra happy mood. Thanks again ladies!

The first item on the agenda, was the Induction of three new members Janet, Margaret and Liz. The five minute speaker was Stan B who grew up on a dairy farm in the Goomeri district in Queensland. When his father sold the farm they moved to Hervey Bay where his father told him that he could take a month off from work! He held various part-time jobs even delivering bread and even being a postman where he graduated from a pushbike to the faster variety of a motorbike. Stan served two years in National Service and was sent to Vietnam. He married in 1970. His life changed and later owned a bakery in Stanthorpe. When that was sold he joined the caravan addictors and travelled the country even doing itinerant work en route. He retired at the age of sixty and as Stan said, “Life is good!”. With his sense of humour, we enjoyed the brief glimpse into his life but time passed too quickly. Thanks Stan.

After morning tea it was the Annual General Meeting which was chaired by Rotarian Nic Curry. Outgoing President Joan Browne gave her Annual Report and thanked everyone for their support during her term of office. The election of officers then took place. The new Committee for 2016 is as follows; President, John Cansdale; Vice President, David Grant; Secretary, Barbara Grant; Treasurer, Frances Rowe assisted by Jim Morris; Activities, Peter Utz; Program, Barbara Cansdale; Publicity, Marge Breitenbach; Newsletter Editor, Brian Phillips; Membership, Shirley Soblusky; Hospitality, Chris Toy; PAQ Delegate, Kevin Howson; Welfare, Ruth Boock.

After the election formalities, Life Membership was bestowed upon Foundation President and now Publicity Officer, Marge Breitenbach and a Past President and now Newsletter Editor, Brian Phillips. Their contribution to the Probus Club is long and varied. Nic Curry, always the professional, with his fine sense of humour did an excellent job chairing the AGM. Retirees and semi-retirees, come and test the water for fun, friendship as well as fellowship by visiting us the second Tuesday of a month at 10am Durack/Inala Bowls Club corner Blunder and Bowhill Roads. On Saturday 5 March, Councillor Milton Dick sponsored a Community Ladies High Tea function held at Richlands Hotel where our volunteer ladies enjoyed a cuppa and friendship.

Organised through the Lions Club of Forest Lake, organiser Lion April said it was nice meeting so many different groups in Forest Lake who are all doing wonderful volunteer work.

Feedback provided to Lion April recommended it should be an annual event.

Building friendships, sharing ideas and working together to achieve the community goals is always a wonderful opportunity experienced at these events.

Our early Easter celebrations have now passed and I suppose if the chocolate melted in your hand, then you were eating it too slowly. I know we shouldn’t but I bet we all enjoyed at least one chocolate egg. The good news is that autumn is now here and we should start to see ideal growing conditions and days of sunshine without the hot summer heat.

Do you hate spiders? Wipe out a web every time you see one in your garden? Grab a chemical spray when you see a spider outdoors? If so, I ask you to re-think the valuable service these hard working insects provide. Some spiders weave wonderful webs. Essentially they provide a free pest control service. Night flying moths, flies and beetles as well as many other insects are kept under control by weaving spiders. In turn lizards, birds and wasps help keep spider populations in balance. So there’s no need to get involved! Nature can look after itself and you don’t have to spend money buying insect spray.

One event not to be missed this month is A Garden A-Fair on 16 and 17 April, in the Auditorium at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. This is an inter-club competition between garden clubs who are members of the Queensland Council of Garden Clubs. Hopefully many of our members will exhibit some of their flowers, foliage and vegetables. There are over fifty different categories and I urge members to enter some of the wonderful flowers that we are growing in Forest Lake.

Come along and check out how we went! Admission is $3 per person however I’ll have some tickets available at the April meeting for $5 which includes entry and morning or afternoon tea.

What can I say about our last bus trip? Yes we did find the Lost Garden in Eumundi but the day started off with a ‘hickup’ when a 48 seater bus arrived to carry our 54 passengers.

Lunch was excellent at the garden and our stop-over at Theo’s Nursery proved a popular venue for afternoon tea. It was great to see several members at the Ipswich Plant Expo last month.

On 9 April Linda Hore will be opening her garden in Camira and I encourage you to join us for afternoon tea. The guest speaker for this month’s meeting will be Greg Entwistle who is curator at the Rome Street Parkland and Southbank and in May we will have Geoff Robinson discussing gerberas. I can recommend both speakers presentations as worthwhile.

I hope to share a cuppa with you at our next meeting and don’t forget to attend a dawn service for ANZAC Day later in the month.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us!!

A decision that businesses must make from time to time, assuming outright purchase is not an option, concerns the method of acquiring an asset for the business. Should it be financed by a loan, perhaps acquired through a hire-purchase arrangement or should the asset be leased?

The decision is not always easy and can be influenced by a number of factors. One of the critical issues is the implicit interest rate within the finance, something that the financier must be able to tell you. Another issue to check in terms of a lease is whether there exists an option to acquire the asset at the end of the lease term.

The accelerated depreciation rules introduced for small businesses, those with an annual turnover of less than $2 million per year, must also be considered. Eligible assets with a cost base of less than $20,000 and purchased between 12 May 2015 and 30 June 2017 are immediately deductible. The potential benefit of this, usually meaning an immediate tax saving equivalent to the relevant rate of tax multiplied by the cost of the asset, is not insignificant as a tax dollar saved now is better than smaller amounts saved over several years in the future. This could potentially tip the equation in favour of purchase rather than lease, as under the latter only the lease payments are deductible each year.

However, the extent of the $20,000 immediate deduction, particularly given that there is no limit to the number of assets that can be claimed in this way, could result in taxable income from the business turning into a loss. This means that the immediate tax benefit might be deferred until the following year unless the loss can be offset against other sources of income for a sole trader. This in turn depends on another tax complexity, being the deferral of non-commercial losses rule! Note that the $20,000 eligibility applies to the cost after claiming back any GST, meaning that for a GST registered business the all-inclusive cost must be less than $22,000.

The above implies that a reasonable level of financial analysis taking into account tax implications is appropriate in the decision-making process. Ongoing costs of using the asset (insurance, registration, repairs and maintenance in the case of a vehicle), are deductible irrespective of the method of financing the asset and therefore do not need to be factored into the calculations.

Algester Update The parliamentary year is in full swing and some of the recent matters we have been considering in State Parliament include the announcement of Queensland’s first Innovation and Investment Summit, the extension of smoking bans in public places and the passing of the Multicultural Recognition Bill.

As Innovation Minister, I am particularly excited about the upcoming Advance Queensland Innovation and Investment Summit. This is a chance for Queensland to showcase its innovative talents to the world, attract global investment and create more jobs for Queenslanders.

Locally, I am pleased that with the extension of smoking bans in public places it will be illegal to smoke near childcare centres, children’s sporting events, public transport stops and outdoor malls from September 1, 2016.

Research indicates that passive smoking causes about 10 per cent of smoking related deaths, so these measures will go some way to protecting our children into the future.

Also with the passing of the Multicultural Recognition Bill, our diverse multicultural community has been formally recognised. The legislation provides greater support for multiculturalism and for people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Forest Lake and the surrounding suburbs are wonderful examples of people from a wide range of backgrounds coming together to build a vibrant and closeknit community.

With nearly 30 per cent of residents in our electorate being born in a country other than Australia, coming from more than 30 countries around the world, it’s possible that the next great Queensland entrepreneur, scientist or innovator could be among them.

Since becoming the State Member for Algester, I have held over 30 mobile electorate offices and am a regular stall holder at the Markets on Grand every second Sunday of the month at Grand Avenue State School.

Mobile offices are not only a great way to stay in touch with what is important in our local community, they are also an opportunity to drop in and raise any State Government issues that you would like assistance with.

March was a fairly quiet month for our Group.

Our newest members learnt all about the history and traditions of Scouting through stories, games and other fun activities. Our new Cub Scouts have also been exploring the world of Mowgli and the Jungle Book, complete with visit to the movie theatre to see it on the big screen.

And of course, we have spent the last couple of weeks immersed in all things Easter, including bunnies, bilby, eggs and chocolate. Don’t worry, we did not forget about the history of Easter. Five ladies representing National Seniors Forest Lake and the Crochet Group at Settlers Village flew out early to St George on 9 March to join the ladies out west for an International Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day luncheon. All the ladies had a thoroughly good time and were pleased to be able to present a cheque for $1000 donated by the Blue Fin Fishing Club, Inala. Five tired but very happy ladies flew back to Brisbane later that afternoon. The donation from Blue Fin will assist where needed in the Shire of Balonne. Thank you so much Blue Fin. What’s delicious to us but potentially deadly to dogs?

Yes, we’re talking about chocolate. It was expected that Australians would spend over $185 million on chocolate this Easter and with the school holidays following, the risk of dogs being poisoned is always high, as dogs love chocolate.

Dogs are known for eating things when they are not supposed to. This is especially true of puppies. Also, dogs have an excellent sense of smell, making it fairly easy to find any secret hiding spots for chocolate. It is a dangerous combination when there is chocolate around the house and children with Easter eggs on holidays.

The foil that encloses the chocolate can also be potentially dangerous to animals as well, as it can form a foreign body which may block the intestine and consequently require invasive surgery to remove.

Although dogs are most commonly affected, it is important to remember that cats and other species of animals can also be susceptible to the toxic effects of chocolate as well.

Onset of clinical signs following ingestion of chocolate at a toxic dose is rapid. Symptoms of hyperactivity, behaviour abnormalities and vomiting with possible diarrhoea develop. Signs will progress rapidly to panting, cyanosis (a bluish discolouration of the skin due to poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood), increased heart rate, increased urination, severe diarrhoea, severe hyperactivity, irregular heartbeats, progressing to seizures then death.

The key parameter which will affect the patient prognosis is the time between chocolate consumption and receiving treatment. Initial treatment will usually involve inducing the dog to vomit. This is usually most successful if chocolate ingestion has occurred within four hours. If severe symptoms have developed, intensive general support using intravenous fluids, muscle relaxants, anaesthetics to control seizures and treatment of heart problems are needed. Due to the intensive care and poor prognosis at this stage, we can only hope toxicity never gets this far. Be careful for the next few weeks after Easter or, if you like chocolate, be careful all the time.

The theme of this year’s Forum was Robotics and Nanotechnology and students were involved in workshops on Ozobots and Robotics conducted

by UQ Ambassadors. Our Guest Speaker for the day was Dr Tanveer Hussain, UQ, Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. This was a very enjoyable day and a fine opportunity for sharing and networking between teachers and students in an area vital to future work for our students. We are very grateful to the University of Queensland, our partners in this venture.

The STEM Institute brings together teachers and students from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics providing extension opportunities for students from both primary and secondary year levels to immerse themselves in these vital areas. St John’s STEM institute will foster a passion in the next generation of leaders to meet the challenges of the global society by developing their skills

As well, we are very excited to have six teams of the 80 chosen world-wide in the finals for the Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge, at the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, USA. Twenty six students will travel to NASA in April to present their project solutions in a range of areas such as Aeronautics and Aviation, Energy and the Environment, Technology and Security and Health. Congratulations to our Future Thinkers who will represent St John’s, the only Australian school at this prestigious event for the second year in a row.

On 2nd March, two coaches were required to take seventy-two members of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club on the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regular monthly outing.

Our destination for the day was the wonderful Madura Tea Estates located in the beautiful hinterland between Murwillumbah and Cabarita Beach on the coast. Our hosts for the day were waiting for us on arrival and quickly organised us into three smaller groups for the plantation tours, which were most interesting and very informative â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who knew tea was grown in Northern New South Wales?

Morning tea was organised for the three groups by our hard working club members to accommodate the tour times.

On completion of the tours, everyone received a thank you â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Show Bagâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; containing a variety of packets of Madura Tea. Before we knew it, it was time to board our coaches and make our way back up to the Seagulls Club at Tweed Heads for lunch. Lunch was a fabulous buffet at the Star Buffet featuring a variety of salads, meats and seafood.

Following lunch, relaxation time was put to good use to enjoy a few drinks and a wee play on the pokies. On our way home to Forest Lake there was the usual reflection on what a wonderful day we all had.

Our March luncheon was held at The Forest Lake Hotel with 28 members enjoying their meal and the company with plenty of talking and laughing around the big table.

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake.
