by John Prout With Easter falling in the middle of the month, we will have plenty of time to work off those extra kilos that we gained consuming those yummy Easter eggs. What better way than to enjoy time in your garden, relaxing and reaping the rewards that your garden can give you. I know apart from many successes there is the occasional failure but, as gardeners, we will take up the challenge. The weather can still provide us with warm days in April, but without the scorching sun, so it’s an ideal time for planting. There’s plenty to do in the garden, so get cracking! Easter is the time to take the bulbs from the crisper in the refrigerator, and plant them in the ground, give them tender loving care, water when required and wait for them to produce colourful flowers in spring. Lawn grubs are now on the march throughout most lawns and must be treated before you have large patches of the lawn turning brown. You may see a blue and red wasp flying low over the lawn. These wasps are actually doing you a favour by eating the larvae of the lawn grub. Not all insects in the garden are bad. Nature’s way of stopping these lawn grubs is to give us several cold days, as during the cold, the larvae do not hatch. If the warmer weather continues then there are many sprays and granular treatments on the market but endeavour to purchase an eco-friendly product as we don’t want to poison the birds that feed on the dead grubs or upset the work of the earthworms. On 8 and 9 April, A Garden A-Fair will be held in the Auditorium at Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. Many of our members will be exhibiting in this inter-garden clubs challenge as well as we will be having a display in the club competition section. Why not make the short trip to Mt Coot-tha Gardens as see some of the floral art, flowers, foliage and vegetables that our members have exhibited? Admission is free to the show. What can I say about last month’s bus trip? Another fun-filled exciting day as we enjoyed morning tea at Carol Kerkin’s garden. Lunch was great at the Beenleigh RSL and gave us the opportunity to rest our legs after exploring the wide arrange of flowers at Carol’s. Everyone was in awe of the large range of salvias showing many different flowers. The afternoon was spent at Nielsen’s Native Nursery where many members purchased several native plants. I know I have some extra work in planting my new native plants. Hope to see you at our April meeting and share a cuppa.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 4 April at 9.30 for a 10am start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

with Susannah Friis If you’re anything like us, your garden shed is a structure fraught with danger with items stacked like a house of cards, liable to fall down with a domino effect if a bucket is even slightly moved. Well, a weekend or two ago, my husband ventured in to get a couple of nails. This removal caused four shelves and their contents, which were nowhere near the small drawer containing the nails, to collapse in spectacular fashion to the ground. So, yes, you guessed it, the next day was Operation Clean up the Shed day. The end result is a lovely, tidy, organised shed. As the previous configuration of tools and garden paraphernalia clearly wasn’t working, there was much rearranging and throwing out of rubbish and disused items. After the hard work was done, we sat back with that satisfied but oh-so-exhausted feeling and enjoyed a well earned cold beverage. And my husband quipped, “Funny how it took it all falling down and making even more of a mess for us to organise it...and now it’s better than before. And I thought, ain’t that always the way! So often in life, it takes something collapsing to motivate us to ‘clear things out’ and rearrange them into a better configuration. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve lamented over something not going right or falling down or creating a bigger mess only to realise with hindsight that without that collapse or bigger mess, other great things wouldn’t have happened. And the other thing is that while we were cleaning up and organising the shed, it looked way worse than when we started. The mess seemed to get bigger and other messes were discovered the more we tried to get it organised. There were things we found that we thought were lost and many an item was reevaluated and deemed ‘tip worthy’, which freed up space. Just like our lives, quite often when we’re in the midst of change, hoping for an end result that is better than how we started, it looks and feels more disorganised than when we began. And in that clearing out process, we can find things that need throwing out; things like resentment, bitterness, grudges, guilt or blame. Once we get rid of those things that lay buried underneath stuff we’ve piled on top, we also discover and make room for things like reconciliation, peace, laughter and the freedom that comes with letting go of guilt and blame. It’s easy to let the rubbish build up and up until just moving one thing can bring it all crashing down but we all do it, just like most of us don’t keep an orderly shed or garage all of the time. But how wonderful when we finally clean it up and can enjoy the new tidier space within us, freeing us up to use all the contents of our ‘shed’ to their full potential, without fear of another shelf collapse! Does your ‘shed’ need a tidy up? Why not venture in there and get a head start? You might just be surprised what you’ll uncover as you start to clean up the mess and get to the forgotten treasure underneath.

Forest Lake community rallies again The Forest Lake community has once again shown its heart and dug deep to support a local family. Local couple, Jane and husband Thomas, with six children of their own, took in a family member’s three children eight years ago and have now opened their hearts and their home to another boy, Jake*. When Jane found out that Jake, a friend of her son, was sleeping rough after a series of family issues, she offered him a bed in their home. Reconciliation with Jake’s family was not possible and after several calls to Child Safety, Jane and Thomas have now assumed full care for the 16 year old. “It certainly was unexpected that we would have to care for yet another child,” said Jane. “I was stressed beyond belief as I didn’t know how we were possibly going to do it. Then one day I just put myself in his shoes and thought, this poor kid, doesn’t know if he’s coming or going, he’s already made the biggest move by getting himself out of that situation. “So then I started to act on getting what help I possibly could. My boys were sharing their clothes with Jake but I thought it would be nice for him to have things of his own. So I posted on our local community page asking for help, which was a huge thing for me to do as nobody knew the dynamics of our family situation.” Jane received donation after donation from local residents, and not just items suitable for Jake, items were also donated for the other nine children in the household. “The community were unbelievable, even my children and my niece and nephews received something. I was telling all the children that there are people out there who care. They were all so excited as we’d never had so many people come to our home. The children were saying “This is like Christmas aye Aunty”. “We also had offers of tuition for our kids who struggle with schoolwork, a mechanic has offered to service our vehicles, a lady offered a free outdoor movie night with popcorn machine for whenever one of the children have a birthday. It’s just been amazing!” Jake is settling into his new home and routine and is enrolled in a local school. He is being supported by Forest Lake Salvation Army who have also provided food donations to the family when available. “We are not a wealthy family in monetary terms, but we are rich in love for all our children, biological or not. My hope, and what I’ve been trying to teach all these children is be the change you want to see in the world. I hope to raise good citizens who will be able to give back to those in need, just like we’ve been given to when we were in need.” (*name has been changed for privacy)

Before After For most parents, taking your child to the hairdressers is a routine chore that requires little thought but for some other parents, it’s a huge effort that takes considerable coordination and forethought. For local residents Paul and Rachael, taking their six year old son, Oisin, who is on the autism spectrum, to the hairdressers was an ordeal as he can’t bear to have his hair or head touched by anyone. Until recently, Paul and Rachael had resorted to cutting their son’s hair, which was constantly in his eyes, when he was asleep. That was until Paul had his hair cut by Michelle at iBarber, Forest Lake Shopping Centre and started talking with Michelle. “Paul mentioned Oisin and about how he was on the spectrum and has hyper sensitivity, and that we would normally wait till he was asleep before cutting his hair ourselves, said Rachael. “Michelle offered to work with Oisin and to cut his hair but to do it at his pace. “We started last November. The first time Oisin just said “Hello, the second time Michelle managed to comb his hair. Slowly but surely after starting off at one snip she has worked with Oisin up to ‘lots of snips’,which is as many as he can handle in one sitting. With the promise of a ‘treat’ after his hair cut, Oisin now sits in the waiting area while other customers have their hair cut. “Both Paul and I have thanked Michelle for her continuing patience and work with Oisin. Michelle, a mother herself, has said that she treats Oisin the way she hopes her daughter would be treated - with respect. “We would absolutely recommend Michelle to any other parents with children who don’t want to have their hair cut. When Michelle is with Oisin, she is 100% focused on him, everything is dictated by Oisin and what he can handle. She is patient, caring and calming. April is Autism Awareness Month with 2nd April being World Autism Awareness day. One child in 63 school children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) making the condition more common than cerebral palsy, diabetes, deafness, blindness and leukaemia put together.* There is also a higher incidence of ASD in males than females. If you’d like to see how you can help raise awareness for austism, go to www.goblueforautism.com. au for more information. *www.a4.org.au/prevalence2015

Pet friendly markets are back in Forest Lake Sunday April 23 from 8am-1pm Forest Lake State High School carpark Many Forest Lake residents have fond memories of the original markets held at the shopping centre in recent years. New market co-ordinators, Kylie and Robyn, have been residents of Forest Lake for some time and are keen to bring the community together. The new markets will be held on the third Sunday of each month with the first one set for Sunday April 23 from 8am-1pm and will be located in the Forest Lake State High School carpark. With plenty of parking in the lower and side carparks off High Street, there will be something for everyone. Local residents interested in becoming a stallholder are encouraged to contact the co-ordinators. “The Forest Lake Community have spoken and we’ve listened. Thanks to our major sponsor MTR Property Group, the markets in Forest Lake are back!” said Kylie. “At our pet friendly market you will find an array of stallholders with quality arts and craft, handmade treats, fresh produce, lifestyle stalls and food trucks, as well as activities for children. “The emphasis is on ‘community’ and providing a happy, safe gathering place whilst also supporting local small businesses and community groups. Breakfast and lunch options will tantalise your tastebuds whilst coffee & cold drinks will quench your thirst.” If you would like to become a stallholder please register your interest by sending an email to forestlakecommunitymarket@ gmail.com. Kylie and Robyn are also on the lookout for local musical talent to keep the crowds entertained. “We need Forest Lake residents to get onboard and support the stallholders - this market is for you, the residents! Show your support and get behind the new markets and support local.” So make your way down to the Forest Lake State High School on Sunday 23 April and mark your calendars for 21st May.

Award for long time volunteer and resident Long term Forest Lake resident, Michael Bischa was honoured earlier this year to receive a Lord Mayor’s Australia Day award for his outstanding contribution to Pamphlett Tennyson Sea Scout Group based in Graceville on Oxley Creek. Having been involved since 1985, Michael has helped hundreds of Scouts and Leaders gain skills and knowledge in his role as leader of the Tarcoola Sea Scout Troop each and every week, as well as assisting leaders in other groups. He has also led water-based activities at major events such as Jamborees and has given up many weekends and holidays all in the name of Scouting. After being nominated by Ian Lightbody, a leader in Scouts Queensland for over 32 years, Michael was delighted to receive the Award in a ceremony held at City Hall. With Michael’s two children now in Scouts, he hopes to continue his long involvement with Scouts after beginning his scouting journey at the Graceville group in 1975.

What’s on at Ipswich Civic Centre? Lovers and Losers Presented by Bishopp in association with Ipswich Civic Centre as part of the 2017 Ipswich Festival Award-winning performers Tyrone Noonan, Sandro Colarelli and Alison St Ledger are having a three-way (conversation that is) about the prickly subject of love: old love, new love and, if you’re lucky, true love. Lovers and Losers looks at both sides of the same coin with songs that celebrate and commiserate. Songs that tell of passion, jealousy and hate, of fanciful flights and sweet delight. With songs by the likes of Tom Waits, Dolly Parton, Burt Backarach, Kander and Ebb, and Jimmy Webb, and those made famous by Frank Sinatra, Roberta Flack and even Guns n’ Roses, Lovers and Losers promises to be a ‘no holds barred’ cabaret featuring three extraordinary voices interpreting some of the best love songs of the 20th century.

Sounds Of The 60s Presented by Ipswich Civic Centre as part of the 2017 Ipswich Festival Australia’s greatest soul voice, Doug Parkinson, presents the ultimate tribute to Joe Cocker. A night of soul and rock classics, the electric current runs high, generated from the very talented eight-piece band and of course the powerful and unique voice of Doug Parkinson. Joe Cocker was an irresistible force that combined a love of American soul music with standout interpretations and a depth of feeling, terms often used to describe the soulful smoky voice of Australian singing legend Doug Parkinson. Cocker is most famous for what he did with other people’s songs Hitchcock Railway, Delta Lady, You Can Leave Your Hat On, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, The Letter, You Are So Beautiful, Up Where We Belong, and Cry Me A River.

Charlotte McLean Part of Studio 188‘s Groove & Grape series Charlotte McLean is emerging as one of Australia’s most captivating and original young vocalists. Having completed her Bachelor of Jazz Music in Voice at the renowned Jazz Music Institute, her exemplary skills as an improviser allow her to put a fresh spin on classic jazz repertoire. Possessed of a velvety-smooth voice, she produces her own addictive style, and her original tunes have garnered critical and popular acclaim. Performing regularly at Jazz Clubs and corporate events in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, Charlotte is also currently honing her skills as a voice technician for her students, of which she has a solid base. Local real estate agents go above and beyond for resident in need When Forest Lake resident Carol* contacted two local real estate agents about selling her house, the last thing she expected was acts of kindness that went above and beyond the business of simply listing a house. “My health is not good,” said Carol. “And I had made the hard decision to sell my house and move nearer to the hospital and also release some much needed funds for medical expenses. “I have lived in Forest Lake since 2008 after visiting a friend. I loved it then and I love it now. It is a beautiful place to live. I enjoy being able to hear the kookaburras laugh. It is a really joyful sound. It is relaxing just driving through the gates of the estate.” Due to a series of complications after the birth of her second child 35 years ago, Carol has endured countless surgeries and procedures culminating in the diagnosis of Intestinal Failure. Carol is now reliant on an artificial feeding machine that can take up to 14 hours a day to deliver the nutrients her body needs to survive. “Isaac, from One Agency, contacted me one night asking why I wanted to sell up and leave Forest Lake as I seemed very happy here,” said Carol. “When he realised I didn’t want to sell but felt I had limited options, he immediately set to work. He contacted his friend George from Remax, who had also appraised my house. Both agencies donated some funds and George set up a GoFundMe page for further donations to go to.” “Isaac then committed to donating 10% of the commission on all houses sold in Forest Lake to my cause. I was completely and utterly stunned. I cried from the unexpected kindness and care that was genuinely shown to me by these two lovely young dads. They remained in touch with me and checked in often to see how I was feeling and to keep me up to date with what they were doing. It was the sheer unexpectedness of it that really touched me the most.” Intestinal Failure effects approximately 250 men, women and children in Australia and New Zealand and occurs when a person’s intestines can’t digest food and absorb the fluids, electrolytes and nutrients essential to life and normal development. Carol highlights the importance of gestures of courtesy and kindness in assisting people with chronic illnesses in the community, and understanding that not all diseases are visible. “Sometimes, people using Disability Parking are not in wheelchairs or on crutches and yes, I look remarkably well but due to artificial nutrition. Often, I am exhausted and in extreme pain. When I am extremely unwell, it is very difficult to walk and often the nausea is crippling. Please don’t judge what you think you see on the outside. It is not always the correct view. Showing kindness and understanding goes a long way to enhancing someone’s day, and doesn’t take much to give.” If you would like to help Carol, please contact The Lake News by sending an email to editor@LNP.net.au. *Name has been changed to protect identity.

Forest Lake residents are encouraged to nominate for the Queens Baton Relay. The Commonwealth Games is not only an opportunity to highlight our sporting stars – but a chance to recognise our community champions as well. I want our young people, our community legends and Queenslanders from all walks of life to carry the Queens Baton in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games. I don’t want politicians signing up for the baton relay. These are the people’s games and I want hardworking locals to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’ve nominated 18-year-old Kyle Ryan, who is a role model to both local school students and the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. In Forest Lake we have some exceptional community members and it would be great to see local heroes proudly holding the Queens Baton. So I encourage you to embrace the spirit of the Commonwealth Games and nominate online at www.gc2018.com/qbr. Nominations close on May 15, 2017.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach

It was Valentine’s Day and Carmel didn’t disappoint by being a ‘walking example’ of promoting this romantic day. She received many a positive remark about her outfit. Thanks Carmel for reminding Probians that there is still life and humour in some of us! Our designated monthly speaker was Saravan (Sanju) Poondi from Milkom where he works as a Career Counsellor. This was his second visit to our Club. Previously he enthralled us with a sketch of his growing up in India. His talk was interspersed with a fine sense of humour. This time his topic was ‘How to Build Self Confidence’. He illustrated his talk with anecdotes and examples from famous personalities and his own experience. The importance of selfbelief, being true to yourself, not comparing yourself to others and not being negative is also a message that some of us, being grandparents, have passed on to our grandchildren over the years. To ask for help does not indicate any weakness. You cannot stop the rain but you can stand in it. Probians were well acquainted with his references to Winston Churchill, Mahatma Ghandhi and Hitler, as many of us lived through those periods mentioned. There has been a change in the venue for the Club’s 15th Birthday Celebration which has now moved to Garden Room, Richlands Hotel in Government Road, Richlands. The Function’s Officer, Rebecca, and Chef, Alan, have been very cooperative. Marge and her Function Committee are hard at work to finalise arrangements for this Celebration. The Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc. is inviting retirees and semi-retirees to pay the Club a visit to enjoy friendship, fellowship and fun. We meet the second Tuesday of the month, at 10am, in the new Uniting Church Hall, 128 Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. For more information, contact Membership Officer, Shirley on 3879 9421 or President, John on 3372 1270.

Monthly Update

by Les Brooks

Last month, 73 of the Forest Lake 50 Plus Club ventured out for a day trip to Albert River Wines and Tamborine Farm Tour. The trip down was relaxing taking us through the wonderful countryside from Beaudesert to the farm. On arrival, we were escorted into Auchenflower House where we were served a wonderful Devonshire Tea of homemade scones served with fresh jam and cream and tea and coffee to wash it down. During morning tea, we were given an entertaining history of the house and farm buildings by Yvonne, who managed to add many light hearted stories about the property. The house was originally built in the suburb of Auchenflower, which was named after the home. With morning tea complete, it was time for our guided Farm Tour of the historic colonial Tamborine House, an iconic Queenslander, and the original Lutheran Church relocated from Kingaroy. Our tour then took us over to the farm animals where we were able to hand feed some of the animals before being entertained with a live sheep dog demonstration. Yvonne then demonstrated whip cracking and boomerang throwing. Some of our members did very well cracking the whip and throwing the boomerang. Following this we made our way back to Auchenflower House for a delicious two-course lunch including tasting of the local Albert River wines. With everyone suitably relaxed we then straggled out to board our buses for Forest Lake, which concluded a very enjoyable day. Thank you to Yvonne from Tamborine Station Farm Tours and the Albert River Wines staff for looking after us so very well. The Club’s ‘Extra Activity’ was attended by 48 members for a great luncheon held on 8 March at the Blue Fin Fishing Club, where there was the usual laughter and talk about our recent very interesting trip to Albert River Wines and Tamborine Station Farm Tours. The Forest Lake 50 Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake 50 Plus Club meet on the third Thursday of April while renovations are in progress, from May the meeting day converts back to our usual third Friday at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next two meetings are Thursday 20th April and Friday 19th May. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. New members are always welcome.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The club’s February game was held at Windaroo Lakes with 29 members attending. Another early tee-off from both the first and tenth tees got everyone back to the Nineteenth Hole in good time. Congratulations to the course green staff for presenting such a lovely course to play. The tough course layout certainly challenged our members with only one person returning a sub-par result. A lunch and prize awards followed the game. Prizewinners on the day were A Grade - Brian Cruickshank with a very good net 65 followed by Mick Morley’s net 74; B Grade was won by Mark McNaughton with a net 79 followed by Marc Steward’s net 82. Our Long Drive winners were Kyle Fairweather (A), Robert Jackson (B), and Carolyn Nottingham (Ladies); Colin Brooke played a fabulous second shot for the nearest approach prize, and Mick Morley, Brian Cruickshank and Richard Focken won the nearest the pins. Donny Mitchell hit a cracking Century to take out the Bradman award for the day. The Club’s next game was held on 19 March at Pacific Harbour Golf Club on Bribie Island with a large field of 41 players attending. Carts and lunch were provided to help make the day a great golfing experience at this Five Star course. The Clubs next game will be held at Carbrook Golf Club on April 16 with another good attendance expected. If you are interested in joining our club, please contact Pat on 0417 213 659. Preparations are progressing well in the lead up to the ANZAC Day Parade and Service. We are excited to include this year rour Model A vintage cars, courtesy of The Model A Club. At the conclusion of the Service, they will be then transported to the Durack Inala Bowls Club for a BBQ and social activities. Members interested in this wonderful opportunity should get in touch with one of the Board members or alternatively give Steve Ford a call at his office on 3375 5550. Very limited seats available so please get in quick! 219 Squadron Air Cadets are again supporting our ANZAC Day Parade and Service. We are expecting the full Squadron this year, so this should present a magnificent display. The Forest Lake Rotary and Lions Club have also offered their support, and we thank them for their ongoing support again this year. Thanks also to RAAF Amberley who will again provide a flypast at the ANZAC Ceremony. MP Milton Dick recently launched ‘The Spirit of ANZAC Awards’ at the Forest Lake State High School. The Sub-branch is again seeking support from the community to assist in its badge selling activities prior to ANZAC Day. Sale points include Woolworths Richlands and the shopping Centres at Inala and Forest Lake. Volunteers are asked to phone Kevin Dinsdale at 0488 220 002 or 3372 8991. The Sub-branch’s Annual General meeting elected a new executive comprising President Bob Richards, Secretary Steve Ford and Treasurer Brian Roche. The balance of the Board comprises Vice Presidents George Churchward and Alan Greig, assistant Treasurer John Sanderson, Property and Membership Director Kevin Dinsdale and Glenn Greenham is Transportation Director. Bob Richards made special thanks to the outgoing executive for the excellent work undertaken in 2016.

Algester Update Over 100 people participated in the Forest Lake Community Safety Forum held on Monday 6 March at the Forest Lake Salvation Army. It was great to see such a big turn out of people interested to know what we can do to make our community safer for everyone. I was joined by my colleagues Milton Dick, Federal member for Oxley and Charles Strunk, Councillor for Forest Lake Ward, along with representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Crimestoppers, Volunteers in policing and Neighbourhood Watch. The purpose of the forum was to address community concerns raised on social media about crime in the Forest Lake area, particularly house and car break-ins, and to identify strategies for how we can work together to maintain community safety. Senior Sergeant Craig Mackenzie, Officer in Charge at the Inala Police Station, highlighted the fact that the area is served by one of the largest police stations in Queensland, which is open 24 hours a day. He informed attendees that several initiatives were being considered to provide greater support to the Forest Lake Police Beat. Detective Inspector Geoff Sheldon provided insights into the structure of QPS and how crimes are solved. He encouraged all residents to report any crimes that occur directly to their local police station. He also commended the Forest Lake community for their assistance in solving several recent crimes by providing information to the police. Our local Crime Prevention Unit coordinator, Sergeant Darnielle Fioriti offered some important advice about reducing the risk of break ins. Up to 50% of all break in offences occur through open or unlocked doors. Sergeant Fioritti urged residents to close their garage doors, keep external doors and windows key locked and to avoid leaving valuables in the car. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions of strategies to improve community safety. I invited community members to join a working group to further some of the initiatives discussed. Already several people have signed on, and if this is something that interests you please contact my office on 3737 2110 to get involved. I’d like to offer a huge vote of thanks to the QPS and other organisations for their ongoing work serving the community and their assistance in sharing information with the community.

a message from the desk of

Milton Dick

MP

FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y

As our workforce changes and evolves it’s important that we are keeping ahead of the curve by training our young people to meet demand. We need to be doing all we can to support local businesses. Equipping young people with the right skills and training is a key part of this and is one of my top priorities for the region. Recently I had the pleasure of hosting the Shadow Minister for Skills and Apprenticeships and Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness Senator Doug Cameron in our community. Senator Cameron and I received a firsthand look at two businesses: Wild Breads and Cummins Diesel Engineering who are both providing significant job opportunities for local residents. Both businesses stressed to me the important of giving our young people the right skills and training for them to succeed in the modern workplace. At Cummins I was fortunate to meet Branch Manager Sean Hill, Northern Region Apprentice Manager Amy Jacobs and Oliver Neville who is a 3rd year apprentice on site. Oliver told me about how much he valued and enjoyed his apprenticeship which gave him the skills to succeed right into the future. A large part of supporting jobs and apprentices means investing and funding our local TAFE branches to provide young people with the critical education and support they need. Everybody deserves the best possible start to getting a good job, and I have witnessed the transformational power of TAFE over a long period of time. Not every student graduating wants to go to university and our TAFE’s provide a vital avenue particularly for young people to become skilled in a trade. I’ll be continuing to fight for the funding that our TAFE’s need to help our young people with the education they deserve. As always, if there is every anything I can help with please email me Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov or get in touch with my office on 3879 6440.

Forest Lake Magpies JRLFC Update by Debra Smith Whilst interest in the Forest Lake JRLFC has been strong, we would love to welcome new players to the club. We are catering for girls Under 6 to Under 12 and boys from Under 6 through to Under 16’s, and are especially interested in players for the Under 13 and Under 16 teams. If you have missed our sign on day, you are still welcome to come down to training at the club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5-7pm to complete your online registration and any additional paperwork. The club is located at 1449 Boundary Road, Ellen Grove. Besides registration and insurance costs, membership entitles each child who signs up to keep their jersey at the end of the year plus a 10% discount card at 5 Star All Sports Browns Plains to assist with the cost of purchasing club shorts and socks. We are also registered to accept the Get Started vouchers to assist with payment of your fees. Items from the Club’s Sportswear range are also available for purchase. Training nights are the best times to organise these purchases. It is a great way to support your club, and makes the team supporters more visible at away games. For those players with aspirations of becoming great players, Forest Lake Magpies JRLFC is affiliated with the Souths Logan club which is a feeder club for the Brisbane Broncos. We are still looking for volunteers in all areas. This does not mean you need to have a child with the club to help out. Basic cleaning and groundsmen jobs can be undertaken by anyone. For those interested in coaching, first-aid, refereeing or trainers positions, the club would assist in paying for the cost of any course required. Our motto is, ‘Everything for the kids’. But we still take time to make sure the parents and carers have the skills and support they need to make everything happen for the kids. All enquiries for the current season can be made by sending an email to admin@forestlakejrlfc.com.au. The club president, Farren Dicker, may be contacted on 0419 131 896. Heart failure occurs when the heart fails to pump enough blood to meet the body’s demands. This causes changes in the body as it tries to support a faltering system. These changes include increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and fluid retention. Heart disease can have many origins. It can be caused by changes in the heart’s muscular walls, defects of the valves separating the chambers of the heart or narrowing of the vessels leaving the heart. As with humans, heart abnormalities can exist at birth or can develop late in life and of course in pets, heartworm can be a contributing factor. When the heart is unable to function correctly, there is a build up of fluid pressure within the circulatory system. This can cause “leakage” of fluid into the chest or abdomen and is responsible for many of the clinical signs seen with heart disease. These signs include: coughing; difficulty breathing; engorgement of veins (often can be seen in the jugular vein in the neck); swollen abdomen (ascites - fluid in the abdominal cavity); enlarged liver; weight loss; decreased exercise tolerance - the dog tires easily; pale or purple mucous membranes; cool extremities (toes, tips of ears etc); fluid swelling of lower limbs. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heart disease, it is wise to have it examined by your veterinarian. Diagnosis of heart disease begins with a thorough physical examination. Listening to the patient’s chest with a stethoscope can allow the veterinarian to identify any abnormal heart sounds, rhythms or lung sounds. If an abnormality is suspected, the next step is to x-ray the chest. Chest x-rays show the size and shape of the heart silhouette, any blood vessel enlargement within the chest and any changes in the lungs. Ultrasound of the heart is a technique that is very useful. It is used to see the size of the heart chambers, the degree of contraction of the heart and more advanced ultrasound machines can even show the direction of blood flow through the heart. An ECG is another way to investigate heart disease. This device records the electrical impulses across the heart as nerves fire to stimulate the heart to beat. ECG’s are useful to determine any changes in the heart’s rhythm and can give an indication of changes of heart chamber size. Other tests such as blood and urine tests can help determine changes caused by heart disease and are often recommended before therapy for heart disease is started. Many different therapies for heart disease are available depending on the type and severity of the disorder. Most pets with mild heart disease respond well to therapy and can have an extended life span with treatment. Unfortunately, many heart conditions are progressive; this is why diagnosis of heart disease can be very important to give a more accurate prognosis. Therapy for heart disease is lifelong once started and generally requires regular rechecks to assess the stage of heart disease and any changes occurring.

Forest Lake Wasps Update by Vanessa Poskus

Well, what a wonderful start to the season we have had down at the Wasps! We have welcomed lots of new R U G B Y families and players to our full strength Saturday teams, fielding all ages U6-U9. This new growth is rewarding for our devoted volunteers who have worked tirelessly to keep our club growing into the future. The Qld Reds have been working closely with us to bring new families to the club. They are running the popular ‘Game On’ program at Grand Avenue State School, which is run as an alternative to interschool sport. Thanks to the Reds and St George, 15 of our players have been lucky enough to secure a chance to train with the Reds at Ballymore later this month. And the all-new, fast-paced, all-ages Viva7s saw 30 people try out this exciting form of rugby union. We look forward to establishing Viva7s as a summer sport option at the conclusion of our competitive season. Registrations remain open for our current season, but you need to be quick! Players can sign up for a two week trial for just $5. Our Early Bird deadline has now passed, but sibling discounts and payment plans are available. Closing this month is St George Bank’s $60 rebate on your registration fees. Included in fees are a backpack and ball for new sign ons, and training shirts and socks for all sign ons. Three rounds of Get Started vouchers were quickly exhausted, but the next release is in July; families can pay fees now and get a refund on your fees later if you get a voucher. All registrations are online and there is a basic insurance charge all families must pay online. Visit our website www. forestlakewasps.com.au or see us down at the club, every Thursday 4.30-5.30pm at 60 College Avenue for more information. Our successful Little Stingers program will run again this season from Term 2 but you can sign up now. Don’t forget the all new Girls 7s Competition on Sundays. You can choose touch or tackle from U8 and up, sign on as a Wasp and play in a mixed club team. We enjoyed having Cr Charles Strunk down at our recent Come N Try day. He was a great sport passing the ball and getting wet with the kids. He said, “I have always enjoyed volunteering and I would encourage anyone with a few spare hours to contact the Wasps or come down here. This is a vibrant team that deserves support.” And indeed, we would love to hear from anyone who would like to be a club sponsor or volunteer for the varied roles we have. We also congratulate Cr Charles on his first year of hard work dedicated to Forest Lake Ward. All enquiries about the current season can be made to president@forestlakewasps.com.au.

Forest Lake Rotary Club update by Jeff Jones - President. Happy Easter to all. Well, we have had the District Conference, held this year at Jupiter’s on the Gold Coast. The input was fantastic, with most speakers doing a magnificent job. We also had a guest speaker from the Surf Life Savers, and when you listen to what they do and how difficult it is, due to the diversity of nationalities they must deal with, I was surprised that there are not more deaths. But in fact, they had no deaths in Queensland this summer season. Great job guys. Swim between the flags. There is no excuse, and you are not only putting your life at risk but also others lives as well. Our BBQ roster is starting to hot up with different organisations wanting us to do BBQ’s to assist them. I am a little disappointed that we have not been able to attract more members and volunteers. I had great faith in our community that we would have had better results. I know we all say the same thing “I’m too busy”. Well yes you are, but we are all in the same position, so come on girls and guys, the more we have the less each of us must do. It’s a great club and we in Rotary, have wiped out except for one small cell Polio a most debilitating disease, from the World. Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin We salute members past and present of our Defence Forces. ANZAC services will be held on 25th April at various locations including Forest Lake. Lest we forget. Hope everyone is enjoying the milder weather. It’s been a way too hot long summer. Our March Branch meeting guest speaker was Inspector Corey Allen from Queensland Police Service. As Officer in Charge City Division, he spoke of his experiences in 30 years of Policing and the increasing focus on good relationships with members of the public. All our members were greatly inspired by his address. Inspector Allen has recently taken up a new position as Inspector at the Queensland Police Academy. With his years of experience, new trainee police officers will certainly benefit from his mentoring. Coming up at this month’s Branch meeting on Thursday 13th is our annual Trivia Games, a popular morning’s entertainment. We have some pretty clever people in our Branch judging from previous games results. Colleges Crossing is our destination in April for a yummy picnic and a bit of fun as well. The men in our group will be out to match the ladies this time in the tunnel ball event while the thong throwing competition will also be hotly contested. We head out of town later this month for an extended trip enjoying sights in and around Kingaroy. A full and exciting itinerary. We all have lots of fun on these trips. National Seniors Forest Lake provides a friendly welcome to all ladies and gentleman in the 50 something age group. There are many, many benefits of membership with National Seniors especially in these turbulent times. National Seniors website is also a great source for more helpful information. Next Meeting date is Thursday April 13. Meeting Place - Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands (second Thursday of the month) 9.30am sign in, 10am start. Morning tea will be followed by a great fun morning of Trivia Games. Join us if you can for lunch at Lions after the meeting. Happy Easter to all. To our members who are unwell, our best wishes for a return to good health. Check out our Branch website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/. For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Val 3372 4405.

Finance Corner

WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.

Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues

Recently I took the opportunity to attend a ‘Retirement Ready’ seminar presented by one of the leading superannuation funds. It provided a very informative summary of the key issues that people should know about accessing what, in most instances, will be the largest pool of funds they will have, and in that regard I would encourage those of you nearing retirement to look out for similar presentations put on by your superannuation fund. Included in the material presented was the topic of Binding Death Nominations or BDNs. Many people may not be fully aware that upon one’s death the amounts accumulated in your superannuation fund(s) is paid out to persons at the discretion of the superannuation fund trustee. In many instances this is likely to be to your spouse, which may have been what you wanted in any event. However, it is not your ‘call’, notwithstanding that you are not in any position to influence it at that time! There may be instances where superannuation could be paid at the trustee’s discretion to persons not intended to receive such monies, or perhaps not in the proportion that they do. Enter the document called a BDN. An appropriately witnessed BDN can be lodged with your superannuation fund expressly indicating that upon your death the trustees of the super fund must distribute funds precisely according to the instructions in the BDN. The BDN will terminate after three years, but your super fund should inform you to complete a new BDN prior to this date. You can of course amend the BDN within the three year period should your circumstances change, something that you should always consider in relation to the currency and relevancy of your will as well. Essentially, the main benefit of a BDN is to remove any certainty about who should receive your super when you die, meaning that you can nominate who exactly gets what. In effect, it ensures that you are maintaining control of the distribution of what is probably one of your largest assets, and therefore represents a key component of careful estate planning alongside your will. Granted...not one of the most exciting topics to write about, but we all know about the other certainty in life in addition to taxation!

This month, we will commemorate ANZAC Day. In particular, this year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele, which many historians regard as the turning point of the First World War. Over many months, hundreds of thousands lost their lives in what was such a brutal battle of attrition that those who fought in it called it the ‘Battle of Mud’. Men were sent to their deaths as cannon fodder in a battle of attrition, because of which Germany ultimately realised they could not match the sheer size of the Allied Forces and began a long defeat. ANNELIE HUGHES Why is it so important to be reminded of these stories, horrible though they are? Because, MCouns QCA (Clinical) PACFA Reg. ARCAP Reg. ACA (Level 4) as George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. PH: 3278 9625 or 0409 789 625 ANZAC Day doesn’t just give us a chance to show our appreciation and respect to those w who have served in the Armed Forces. It also serves as a reminder of what can happen when w we fail to resolve differences peacefully. At all levels of society, we need moments and landmarks that remind us of our past. A ANZAC Day serves as a national day of remembrance, markers along the Brisbane River rremind us of the 1974 and 2011 floods, while the pictures on the walls in our homes remind u us of times gone by. It is by knowing the story in which we are set, that we find meaning and identity. In the ssame way, God knew His people needed markers to remind them of their history (both good a and bad) and gave them festivals for significant historical events. One such festival was P Passover, celebrating their exodus from Egypt – a festival still observed by Jews today. & Likewise, Christians annually observe Easter (this year also in April) to remember the d death and resurrection of Jesus Christ – the greatest act of sacrifice and service in history a and the foundation of our faith. So, as you look to April this year, ensure you participate in the ANZAC Day commemorations iin our community – ensure you bring that memorial into your story. Also, consider going to oone of the local Churches at Easter and consider making Easter part of your story.

One year in, it has been a pleasure to serve in the community I value and live in. On 19 March 2016, the Forest Lake Ward community choose to elect me as their representative in Brisbane City Council. With much joy, I would like to sincerely thank you for putting your trust in me. This month everyone was excited to see the new all abilities pirate ship at the Lake Parklands installed. It was one of my initial commitments as the newly elected Councillor to provide this for our young Forest Lakers and their families. I had a great time hosting the official opening of the Pirate Ship by holding a Pirate Ship Party. Seeing the children from the Forest Lake SS and Grand Avenue SS enjoying the new equipment and being dressed up in their favourite pirate gear really highlighted the importance of providing valuable playground equipment to encourage our children to enjoy the outdoors and our beautiful local parks. Sun safety is important and that is why I made sure that shade sails were installed to keep children and their parents safe from the ultraviolet (UV) rays while in the playground. I am pleased to announce that a brand new barbeque has been installed at the Lake Parklands (corner Lakeside and Grand Ave). We have many wonderful local community groups who use our lake parkland areas to get together and enjoy each others company. I know that the Forest Lake National Seniors group will especially enjoy the new barbeque facilities and I can’t wait to join you for a snag later in the year. I’m delighted at the turnout at the recent Community Safety Forum. It was a huge success and it was great to see community leaders, law enforcement and school representatives raise their concerns and contribute to the evening. A Forest Lake Working Safety group has been formed and are looking for more members. If you are passionate about the safety of our community and would like to contribute, I encourage you to contact my Forest Lake Ward Office to find out more or to call in for cuppa. Thank you to everyone in the community for making the month an absolute pleasure!
