Hello Readers Our Twentieth Year Celebrations this year have culminated with successful student outcomes in academic, sport, performing arts and service programs. These elements are the foundation of a balanced St John’s education, established twenty years ago by the College founders and it has been a great pleasure for all involved in the past two decades to witness ongoing achievement in these areas. During the year we have reconnected with early community members, shared stories of success and hard work, and at times disappointment, and as a result our community has become stronger. We now go forward into the next decade with confidence and renewed enthusiasm for the challenging but infinitely rewarding privilege of educating our young people for their future. At the end of 2013 our College community farewelled our Head of Primary, Mrs Pam Hall. Mrs Hall served the College from 2005 to 2013 with distinction. In the second decade of the development of this young school she refined the primary school curriculum, guided and developed our teaching staff and established Little Saints Kindergarten. She was also recognised with a Fellowship for excellence in Educational Leadership through her professional association, the Australian Council for Educational Leadership, Queensland. We wish Mrs Hall well in her retirement.

With much pleasure and excitement we welcome Mrs Sandra Hawken as our new Head of Primary in 2014. Mrs Hawken has a wide range of experience in the independent school system, with her previous position as Head of The Toowoomba Preparatory School. Mrs Hawken said, “I am highly passionate about education for young people, particularly in the area of literacy as this provides the key to all learning.” Mrs Hawken brings to the College, great experience and expertise and we look forward to her joining St John’s highly skilled, passionate primary teachers.

Personally Speaking welcome to 2014! By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

Another new year full of opportunities and possibilities. A fresh start, we like to say, don’t we? What exactly is a fresh start? fresh |fre sh| adjective 1 not previously known or used; new or different : the court had heard fresh evidence. 2 recently created or experienced and not faded or impaired : the memory was still fresh in their minds. And the definition of ‘start’ was rather long but the essence is ‘to begin’. I like the definition of fresh – not previously known or used; new or different. Sometimes, it seems as though we say the words fresh start but what actually ends up happening is just a re-hash, a do-over of the same thing. But, by it’s definition, a fresh start is something new entirely. It’s not something we’ve tried before and are just going to approach a different way. It’s actually about starting something that is completely new to us. I’m all for fresh starts. I like to try new things, to jump onto new projects, and create new experiences. In fact, I like it so much, I’m in very real danger of never finishing anything due to the allure of every ‘new’ project that comes into my field of vision! But that’s a whole other topic, for another month. While we’re in the mood for fresh starts, why not extend it a bit? Are there people in your life who deserve a fresh start? Relationships you’ve let go by the wayside; hurts you’ve held on to; mistakes you’ve not forgiven? What if we decided to let the people in our life have a fresh start too? And what if we gave them a true fresh start, not just a re-run of the same old way of relating, but a different relationship altogether? A fresh start is not the same as a second chance. A second chance is another turn at the same thing. A fresh start is the beginning of a new whole new way. If we’re honest, we’ll know that we all need a fresh start at some time in our lives. We need a ‘wipe the slate clean’, complete and utter new beginning. And it’s in our best interests to recognise that need in ourselves and in those around us. What fresh start are you going to make this year? Is it beginning a relationship anew? Is it a business venture? All fresh starts involve risk but as the saying goes ‘if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got’. Go out on a limb this year and have yourself a fresh start!

$250.00 per couple – Centenary Suburbs - venue to be advised

“Let us pause from thinking...let us stop the noise. In silence let us listen to our hearts.” (Michael Leunig) In our hectic lives today, many of us wish to find a place of meditation and healing. St Catherine’s Anglican Church in Middle Park has created just such a space for everyone in the community to visit – be it for an individual retreat, a place of mystery, sanctity, pilgrimage, or for groups of all ages just to rest and enjoy. The Blessing of the Centenary Suburbs’ first Labyrinth took place in December, when Bishop Alison Taylor visited St Catherine’s Community for the first time since her commissioning earlier this year. A labyrinth is a path for prayer and a tool for spiritual growth. Labyrinths have been in Christian churches since at least the fourth century, and were adopted in the great medieval cathedrals as an alternative to a pilgrimage to Jerusalem made difficult by the Crusades. The most famous of the remaining medieval labyrinths is to be found in Chartres Cathedral outside Paris. Unlike a maze which is often confusing, a labyrinth has only one path and is designed to help the walker find their way on a personal journey of quietening the mind, prayer, meditation and healing. Situated adjacent to the St Catherine’s Garden of Memories, the Labyrinth is open at all times. Members of the community are invited to come alone or with friends and family to experience – “resting, walking and pausing” – as a way of restoring balance in a busy world. Early morning and evening labyrinth walks are especially inspiring during summer. Parents picking up children from school, Guides or after school classes are encouraged to enjoy a few moments of rest at the Labyrinth. Organised Labyrinth Walks will be advertised soon for anyone wishing to participate or learn more about the benefits of walking a labyrinth. Please contact Reverend Tania Eichler for further information on 0401 690 127 or 3376 4052.

reflect about the things we hold precious. For many, the holidays are a time to catch up with friends and family to celebrate the year just gone and enjoy the love that connects us to our dear ones. But for others it can be a time of sadness, loneliness, and despair. So reflecting on the really important values of our society and taking some action to bring peace to those who are not so blessed becomes an important part of celebrating the ending of one year and the start of another. Here are a few tips for ways you can show gratitude for the positives in your life: • As part of your new year reflections, why not write a note to people in your life who are special to you and tell them how they make a difference in your life. • If someone has inspired you to push outside your comfort zone, thank them for believing in your capacity to take a risk, and let them know how it paid off. • If you know someone who serves you regularly, acknowledge something they always do well, like staying calm under pressure. • If someone you know is going through a tough time, call them (or better still go to see them) and take a genuine interest in listening to them – giving time and genuine interest in other people’s lives is fast going out of fashion but so important for wellbeing. • For someone you don’t know but who has made your day a little brighter, let their boss know how they’re doing a great job and contributing to the company. • And don’t forget to give yourself some gratitude – make a list of all the good things you’ve done for other people and the world in the past year; treat yourself to something you enjoy, like a pedicure or a massage; or acknowledge the things you’ve learned this year, no matter how tiny, and reflect on how these things have changed your life for the better. Last but not least, taking the time to count your blessings every day builds wellbeing, strengthens your physical health, and is a core component for healthy relationships. At the end of every day, think about the three most significant experiences and people that have brought a smile to your day.

Kiwanis Club of Brisbane supports Queensland kids This month, the Managing Director from Queensland Kids, Mr Paul Quilliam, attended a Kiwanis Club of Brisbane meeting to share the vision of Hummingbird House to be established for Queensland families with children affected by life-limiting conditions. The UK’s population of 63 million boasts 49 children’s hospices. With Australia’s population of 23 million there are only two children’s hospices nationally and none of them are in Queensland. This is about to change through recent State and Federal funding announcements to support the building and operational costs of Hummingbird House. As Co-founder of Queensland Kids, Mr Quilliam presented an update of the project as well as highlighting the strong synergies between the two organisations with their advocacy for children. Internationally, the Kiwanis Club has a long history of supporting children’s hospices and fundraising for paediatric palliative care initiatives. Mr Quilliam expressed Queensland Kids’ gratitude to the members of the club for its recent generosity of a $1000 donation towards Hummingbird House and his optimism for continued relationship building between the both of them. At the conclusion of the presentation, Kiwanis Club of Brisbane President, Ms Anita Lennox presented Mr Quilliam with a certificate of appreciation for his contribution to the evening’s proceedings. For more information about Queensland Kids and Hummingbird House please visit the following website www.queenslandkids.org.au. For more information about Kiwanis Club Brisbane and the work of Kiwanis in Australia, please visit their website at: http://aus.kiwanisone.org.

Suffering with Serious Neck Pain? We have an offer for you!

AND why is your head so far forward? You look like you’re 85 years old! Headache and neck pain are usually connected to neck posture, even if you’re only a child, but it gets more prevalent as we get older. Forward head position is linked to higher risk of headache, neck pain, upper back pain, and shoulder and arm pain and numbness in the arms and fingers. Quite apart from that, it’s not a good look. Who can look young and vital with head drooping and bent shoulders? Spine shape counts. There is good medical research linking neck shape distortion to pain after whiplash, to increased neck pain risk, increased headache and migraine risk and increased risk of osteoarthritis in the neck. In fact, in one large medical study of those aged over 70, rigid greater forward neck position in some is linked even, believe it or not, to earlier death. Our clinic is one of only perhaps a dozen in Australia having the skills, training and unique equipment to correct these spine shape distortions. Forest Lake Chiropractic is a private chiropractic practice run by chiropractors, one of whom has unique advanced postgraduate university education in Pain Medicine and using world’s best chiropractic practice research on an evidence-informed basis for the care of spinal pain syndromes. In fact, Forest Lake Chiropractic is currently active in university based neck spine research within the clinic. We have just (November) finished an 11 ½ year project on a new neck bone imaging technique developed at Forest Lake Chiropractic, which will be published worldwide in 2014. We can’t help everyone, but we may help you. We use no drugs, pills, injections, or operations. Just proven, safe, natural, evidence-based, world class, cost-effective Chiropractic care. Forest Lake Chiropractic is upstairs in the Professional Suites of Forest Lake Village Shopping Centre (under the clock tower), with parking right at the front door. We are open at 7am every weekday, and Page 8 - January 2014 - The Centenary News

don’t close until 6pm (we are absent between 11am and 3pm daily), and we are also open Saturdays from 8am until we finish. We have HiCaps, and x-rays (when needed) are bulk billed. Our treatment fees per visit are lower than those of physiotherapists, acupuncturists, and even massage therapists, and ALL health funds offering chiropractic coverage in Australia cover us. Your GP can refer you to us for WorkCover or Medicare funded Enhanced Primary Care where appropriate (you must see your GP first). Because so many people tell us “I wish I had found you sooner ...” in the New Year, we will waive our usual consultation, examination and report fee total of $100.00, and if you bring this ad and present for care, $47.00 will be all you will pay for those services. For this you will get: • An in-depth consultation about your neck problems where we will listen ... really listen … to the details of your case; • We will actually measure neck pain severity and the impact it’s having on your daily life; • A comprehensive physical, spinal, muscle and nerve examination; • A second consultation before any treatment to discuss fully all details of your case, where we can map out for you what options apply, including info on beds, pillows, sitting, standing, exercise, risk reduction and other aspects of self-help.

We wish the Centenary News and their readers a very happy 2014 and hope you all enjoyed the 2013 festive season. We start January with a couple of events to keep our brain and bodies working. On January 2nd and 9th, we’re back to our MahJong session, 9-noon at Mt Ommaney Library Meeting room. Then we have our Steady Steps program starting back on 13th at 9am at the Centenary Uniting Church Hall. Wednesday 15th, our Zumba Gold classes start back at 9.30am at the same venue, and also on the 15th, we have an Evening Dinner at the Jindalee Golf Club at 6.30pm. If you would like to go to the dinner, please call Marlene on 3279 1444 to book in. We have a friendly ‘cuppa and chat’ beside ‘Betty Beans’ in the Food Court at Mt Ommaney on 28th at 10am to which you are very welcome to join us. In February, we get back to normal. Our first General Meeting for 2014 will be held on Tuesday 4th at 9.30am at the Jindalee Bowls Club with a friendly ‘cuppa’. Will we have a guest speaker or an entertainer? You are most welcome to come along as a visitor or a joining member and solve this mystery. We will meet you at the door, hand you a two monthly Newsletter showing all our activities, also a free raffle ticket, then you will meet over 90+ members who are always very friendly. How about we make a New Year’s resolution to get fit? We meet at the Centenary Uniting Church Hall every Monday morning at 9am for a Steady Steps exercise/dance program, and on Wednesdays at 9.15am for a ‘Zumba Gold’ workout. Why not exercise the brain cells as well by learning to play MahJong? Sessions are held on the 1st and 2nd Thursdays each month at 9am – noon at the Mt Ommaney Library. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we can teach you. Also we don’t score so it is very friendly. Our Committee members have planned ahead and activities include evening dinners, morning teas, concerts, plays, Explorer Trips (using public transport) and coach trips (we travel in luxury and enjoy a morning tea at an ideal picnic park and a two course lunch. (These trips are very affordable at $50 per trip no matter how far we travel) each alternate month. Our last Mystery Trip went down to the Gold Coast where we caught a boat and travelled the Inside passage before coming back for lunch. If you add all this up the result is “FUN” and making new friends. It is so easy. For more information please call Elaine on 3376 1986.

Jindalee Lions Club update by Irene Dunning ex-Lioness & Project Chairman

What an exciting morning we had when the Jindalee Lions Club retrieved a capsule which had been planted on the premises of what was then called the Centenary Shopping Centre. The capsule was put down in 1988 to celebrate The Bicentennial of Australia by the then Jindalee Lioness Club. To help us celebrate we were very pleased to see six exLionesses together with four ex-Lions and District Chairman for Lionesses, Margaret Zonca attend. It was very much a reunion as well. We were also pleased to see Tarnya Smith MP, Martin Gilles representing Councillor Matthew Bourke, representatives from the Jindalee State School Assistant Principal Caroline Duffers and Male School Captain Liam Sands. The school were also involved in providing information for the capsule. Members from the Historical Society were present. Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre was represented by Manager Steven Ihm and members of his staff as well as Nicki and April from The Shingle Inn who provided the beautiful morning tea sponsored by the Centre as well as a 25-year cake which they donated. To begin the proceedings, President Glenda Haig welcomed everyone and gave a short speech about the Lioness Club. The contents of the capsule and five photo albums provided a lot of interest for everyone and it brought back many memories of the various projects the Jindalee Lioness Club organised. There were many of them. It only seems like yesterday when we were all together working for the community and at the same time having a lot of laughter and fun. Costumes from our Fashions of Yesteryear were displayed along with the Australian Women’s Weekly “Women Celebrate 88 medallion“ (one of only 200 issued throughout Australia). Any queries regarding the capsule or membership in Lions can be obtained by contacting Irene Dunning on 3372 9886 or 0407 880 756. Our thanks go to Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre, The Shingle Inn for their sponsorship and to all those who were present at this historical occasion.

Sign on to play football with the Centenary Stormers this season Centenary Stormers will be holding their sign on days for the upcoming season on Saturday, 8 February from 9.00am to noon and Sunday, 9 February from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Both sign on days will be held at their home ground at Atthow Park, Monier Road, Darra. The clubs Capital Men’s team are also looking for quality players and will be holding trials from 7.30pm on Tuesday, 14 January and also on Thursday, 16 January. Some teams in the junior ranks have also been fortunate enough to be included in the Brisbane Junior League in the Under 12 competition for 2014. Trials for this team will be held from 6.00pm on Tuesday, 14 January and Thursday, 16 January. Five Under 11 players have also recently been selected to play for Western Pride FC in the National Premier League competition this year. Four of these players undertook an off season development program with qualified coach, Justin Robertson, at the club over 18 weeks late last year. This is a significant achievement for the boys and even though the club is sad to see them go, new President Rose Banford is extremely proud of the boys and also of the club for the successful implementation of the development program. The club is looking to have Justin Robertson at the club on a more permanent basis this year with a view to developing the coaches and players. The club believes that this will allow Centenary Stormers to cater for all levels of football from the social player right through to players who have aspirations to play at the highest level. If you would like any further information contact Club Secretary Emma on 0411 184 773. The Centenary News - January 2014 - Page 11

Veterinary News

by Dr Scott Snellgrove BVSc (Qld)

Gold Standard in veterinary medicine It sounds like a truly wonderful thing and certainly can be something we all strive toward. Last week we put a Titanium implant into a dogs knee. It was made on a futuristic 3D printer. Stem cells were another option. A lucky dog. With the advent of MRI, laser, cancer therapies and the many new high-tech diagnostic medicinal tools at our disposal, it may be sometimes only limited by an owners comfort zone. A problem arises, however, if we insist on practicing gold standards for every animal, at every visit and every time. It then becomes about us and not the client. Unlike human doctors, we must juggle the animals interests and recommended protocols with the owners expectations and budget. How to square that circle? I recently discussed this very subject with my first ever boss (and mentor) from over 20 years ago who offered up the following pearl of wisdom. “Their gold standard is not your gold standard. At the end of the day, it is about the clients wishes for their pet rather than your own academic aspirations. Certainly recommend what you would choose for your own pet but do not take it personally if they choose some more affordable option. Pets should be a pleasure and not a burden, so be flexible. There is usually an option for every budget - just so long as a pet is not suffering. Tests are needed but you also have to use six senses first when diagnosing. That is look, touch, listen, smell and taste. Then use the most important sense – common sense.” (Not so sure about that taste option though reportedly it can detect sugar in the urine! ) Overseas the trend has been toward commoditisation and corporatisation of veterinary practice chains. The model of shareholder returns and reviewed monthly targets for incentivised staff has created some loss of flexibility and a tendency to focus on just “A” clients in the U.S. Whether it leads to “best” medicine or just more medicine also remains to be seen. There are certainly plenty of well meaning but realistic owners (with kids to educate, bills to pay etc) who undoubtedly love their pets. They are not bad owners so no one wants to see a situation where the implication is ”if you cant afford em - shouldn’t have em”. Insurance and payment plans may help but are not the answer to all ills. I think pets provide excellent return on investment with the unconditional love they provide. We have a duty of care toward them as part of everyday life or through adversity if not necessarily as a luxury item. I’m sure many of my colleagues would agree. And there are always options.
