Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

I’ve been thinking recently about prejudice and how it happens. You see, there is just blatant racism or prejudice for no sane reason whatsoever, and then there are prejudices that are based on a past experience that was negative. Tattoos used to be, and I say ‘used to be’ because it seems every man and his dog has a tattoo these days, the mark of people typically thought of as ‘dangerous’ or ‘tough’. If you’ve had a nasty encounter with someone who is covered in tattoos, chances are you’ll be wary of all people who are heavily tattooed and give them a wide berth. We are incredibly good at ‘tarring all feathers with the same brush’. What I’m trying to say is that sometimes, our prejudices can seem reasonable and in fact, are often understandable. But does that make them right? Here’s an example. Recently I spoke at a local club about the work of Destiny Rescue. One of the products for sale to help Destiny Rescue fund the work they do, is coffee beans. Many of the clubs and groups I speak to have members at the ‘wise’ end of life, and I have found that most people in this bracket don’t have coffee machines. So even though I have coffee listed as a product on my powerpoint presentation, I don’t usually mention it. Well, at this particular club I was asked about it and my response (unfortunately!) was that I didn’t talk about it because not many people in ‘this age group’ have at-home coffee machines. Oops! Seems that about a third of the group I was speaking to, do in fact have coffee machines at home! Didn’t I feel embarrassed. I had made an assumption - you might even say I was prejudiced! - based on my past experience, that was incorrect. So if we take that example and apply it to the rest of life, we can perhaps see where some of it is coming from. If a child is bitten by a dog, usually there will be some sort of fear and trepidation around dogs when the child is an adult. And it’s right and wrong at the same time. Yes, dogs can bite, as the child experienced, but it doesn’t mean that all dogs will bite. And it’s the same with people. Some people are mean, angry and aggressive - and sometimes those people have a different skin colour to us, have tattoos and shaved heads, might not be well educated, or dress well - but that doesn’t mean that all people who have different skin colour, tattoos, shaved heads, minimal education or less money to spend on clothes will be mean, angry and aggressive. So regardless of our prejudices, we may be able to see the reason behind it, but it’s never okay to stay that way. Each individual is just that - an individual. Shouldn’t we start treating them individually?

SENIORS

Centenary National Seniors Update by Marlene Worthington, Club President

Our friendly Club’s membership increases each month. New members are met at the door by Sue, our Sunshine girl, who will then introduce you to our President and Committee. You will be handed a bi-monthly newsletter showing dates and places of all our activities. Then you can sign on for all the activities that interest you most. We have about 90 members who attend regularly. Hugh is there with his register to make sure that all members sign in and get a copy of the latest newsletter, then it’s onto Carmel for your lucky raffle tickets and Monica to sign up for the next round of plays, followed by Rosalie taking all the other Activity bookings. Our next meeting is 1st July at 9.30am at the Jindalee Bowls Club, with alternate speakers or entertainers. Our morning teas are always inviting. Last month, we had the pleasure of Mr David Gibson addressing our members with his Queensland Day Topic: ‘Toward a Queenly Colony’. You are certain to warm up at our ‘Steady Steps’ exercise classes held at the Centenary Uniting Church Hall each Monday morning at 9am or play our ever popular MahJong games held on the first two Thursday mornings each month, 9am to noon at Mt Ommaney Library Meeting Room. Members enjoy evening dinners at various local restaurants, morning teas, plays, concerts, Explorer trips around Brisbane using public transport and Coach trips to places of interest outside Brisbane. Our June Explorer trip was to Boggo Road Goal where we all got locked up. It was fun learning how the prisoners of long ago dealt with the prison system. Our Coach trip this month is to Highfield Heaven, morning tea and a two course lunch included, with a couple of stops on the way home. These Coach Trips are very popular and you need to get your name down early with Anne and Jenny. See you next month to read more about our exciting adventures. For more information call me on 3279 1444. Please leave a brief message on the answering machine if I’m unable to answer at the time, and I will get back to you ASAP.

Nature morning beside the Brisbane River draws a crowd of all ages The first day of winter produced a beautiful sunny day for the Nature Morning beside the Brisbane River held in Westlake. Over 100 adults and 50 children joined in the fun. There was a festive atmosphere with all the families and marquees set against the backdrop of the bushland. Shealagh Walker, President of Centenary and District Environment Action, welcomed everyone and told them of the important work CDEA had done in preserving bushland in the Centenary suburbs area. She said one of the organisation’s functions was to start and foster Bushcare Groups to look after the bushland areas. Chua Yen Kheng of Wolston and Centenary Catchments, co-host of the event, told the group about the importance of local bushland and wildlife to the ecology and how WaCC helped look after these important assets. Anna Shera of council’s Habitat Brisbane explained about bushcare groups and the work they do. Ed Parker, who was instrumental in saving the bushland where the event was held, told the story of saving it from development and the subsequent starting up of the first Bushcare Group in the Centenary suburbs. The stars of the morning were the gorgeous native critters from Geckoes Wildlife Presentations. The children loved patting the friendly animals while Kirstan told the enthusiastic group all about them. After a very pleasant morning tea in the park, some folk went for a guided walk on the Coucal Trail, while others went on a Fungi Foray. This group found some fascinating fungi the previous day’s shower had enticed out of the ground. The morning was organised by Centenary and District Environment Action (CDEA) and Wolston and Centenary Catchments (WaCC), the two leading environmental groups in the Centenary suburbs area. Anyone wishing to join a local Bushcare Group should contact Cr Matthew Bourke’s office on 3407 7000. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/WolstonAndCentenaryCatchments and the CDEA website www.cdea.org.au.

Local children display artistic flair

The children at the Jamboree Community Kindergarten have been hard at work, preparing for their annual Art Exhibition. For the past term, they have been putting paintbrush to paper, creating their very own masterpieces. There will be over 80 pieces featured, showcasing the children’s hard work and creativity. The exhibition will run until the end of June at the Mt Ommaney Library, located adjacent to the Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre. The centre hopes that it will be a successful event, allowing the children to show their friends and family their accomplishments.

Veterinary News

by Dr Scott Snellgrove BVSc (Qld)

Ticking time bombs August through until April is the traditionally high season. Windy weather after a flush of rain is particularly ominous as it probably disperses the tiny larva. You could simply hide inside the house and avoid the outdoors altogether but when heading out, successful counter measures can be taken. Vigilance. The tick takes several days to manufacture its toxin which has several actions on the muscles of the victims legs, heart, breathing and swallowing. Search thick coats including lips, ears, paws and under collars. Remember there may be more than one. If defused early enough, no extra emergency measures may be required. It’s best to remove any ticks as soon as possible. A ‘Tick Twister’ is ideal and can be purchased cheaply from the vet surgery and can be carried easily on a key ring. Symptoms can still develop up to a day or so later, so watch out for any signs of coughing, gagging or wobbly legs. Contact your vet if in doubt. Anti tick treatments. Not all flea agents provide tick cover and ones that do need more frequent application. Advantix, when applied fortnightly, probably provides best protection and is less affected by rain or washing. It disperses through the skins coat oil layer rather than as a surface powder or gas, so is family friendly as well. Shampoo rinses are ok for immediate treatment or a few days but have little residual activity. Tick collars are moderately effective but can be useful in low season or as an adjunctive treatment for dogs at high risk. Some are longer lasting and also work through the coat oil so less rain affected than the gas or powder types. If combining treatments (say a Spot On with a collar) it is best to use two different chemical groups like Advantix (synthetic pyrethrin) with Preventic collar (Amitraz), rather than double dosing the same type chemical. If in doubt, ask. Unfortunately, options for cats are far less as pyrethrins cannot be used and only Frontline Spray (fipronil) is licensed as safe for cats. It should be applied every three weeks for outdoor cats. Searching coats is also advised. Antidotes. That is antivenene. This is only administered when signs already exist. Recovery is not immediate and hospitalization is usually required. The antitoxin prevents further toxin absorption but any toxin already attached to nerves will last for days. Oxygen and intensive care can be required. Antivenene is a biological serum product so adverse reactions can also rarely occur especially in cats. The vet will decide at what stage treatment is given but generally, early treatment is far more effective. The future? No vaccines as yet exist for tick poisoning though our understanding of the toxins involved and its complex actions on the body have improved. Ongoing home management may still be required where localized paralysis develops around the lips, eyelids or voicebox. Victims can be left unable to blink, may drool or lose their voice. Careful feeding with an elevated bowl or use of eye lubricants may be needed for a few days to avoid inhalation or protect the cornea from damage.

$1000 FREE DENTAL TREATMENT for eligible kids every 2 years. Yes we bulk bill! JRA President Wayne Williams and resident and committee member Nelia Khademzad stand in front of Nelia’s house where the 2011 flood waters reached the top of the driveway. Three years after the devastating floods of 2011, local community group, Jamboree Residents Association (JRA) are forming the Flood Readiness Action plan. With so many people caught unawares when the flood hit, president of the JRA, Wayne Williams, together with a dedicated committee are eager to minimise property and valuables loss in the case of a future flood event. “It was determined that if only 10% of the volunteers who assisted in the recovery clean-up made themselves available before the floods arrived, much less damage and loss of furniture and valuable would have occurred,” said Wayne. “Also the clean up time would have been greatly reduced.” The flooding of the Mount Ommaney Creek came as a shock to most residents, making emergency removal and relocation difficult. The Flood Readiness Action plan will consist of four stages of alert and recovery, which, with accurate prediction of water levels determined since the 2011 flood event, will make the decision to relocate or stay, a more informed process for residents. The JRA AGM will be held on Saturday 28 June from 1.15pm at the Westside Church of Christ on Dandenong/ Sumner Rd, and will include asking members to accept the Jamboree Residents Association - Flood Readiness Action Plan (JRA-FRA Plan). Interested residents or other similar groups from within the readership area of the Centenary News are invited to attend. Hydrologist Grant Witheridge will be speaking and providing detailed information about flooding in general of the Brisbane River and particularly information from the 2011 floods. The focus will be on the Mount Ommaney Creek Catchment which navigates through lower sections of Jamboree Heights, but information and the JRA FRA plan is adaptable to other locations along the Brisbane River. If you’re interested in attending, register, for catering purposes, by sending an email to president@jra.org.au or phoning 0402 084 764.

Advice on the House

with Susan Bardon

This month I would like to discuss the different methods of sale – I regularly meet with owners who are confused about the different terminology used by real estate agents. And as always, I welcome your personal phone call or email, to discuss any real estate matter.

So

ld

Exclusive Agency • Only one Agency is given the listing of the property, usually for 60 days, with one salesperson co-ordinating most of the marketing and inspections. • Fixed Price marketing attracts Buyers who are looking in a particular price range. • Price Range, or No Price, or Offers Over $X, or Tender are confusing to many buyers. • If the price (or price range) is too high, buyers for whom the property is ‘ideal’ will not look at it. • Auctions attract buyers who are seeking a particular type of property – the buyer for whom your property is ‘perfect’ is likely be the buyer who is prepared to pay a premium price for your home. • We only recommend Auctions when a combination of several factors are present – we will discuss these factors with you at our appointment if you feel that an Auction may be appropriate for you. • Some Buyers are unable, or unwilling, to bid at an Auction – it can be an expensive exercise for Buyers to conduct the searches and inspections they require (up to $1,000) prior to bidding. Sole Agency • A Sole Agency only differs from an Exclusive Agency in that the Seller is not liable for commission if the Seller sells privately. This is usually only used when the

Seller already has a specific buyer in mind, eg a relative or neighbour. Open Listing • Several Agencies are given the property to sell. • It is unlikely that any Agency will undertake as much preparatory work for an Open Listing as for a Sole or Exclusive Agency (eg websites, brochures, advertising). • Dealing with several sales representatives from different Agencies can be quite stressful for Sellers. Private Sale • Sellers sometimes try to sell their property without using an Agent, often in an effort to eliminate the cost of commission, or because of past frustrations in dealing with Agents (or both!). • Many Buyers will not consider properties that are offered for private sale as they like the ‘arms length’ provided by an Agent. • Apart from the obvious sale price, other matters to be negotiated include the deposit amount, finance approval date, inspection date/s, settlement date and any other special conditions the Buyer may request. • The three most common outcomes for Private Sale properties are a) it remains unsold; b) it is sold by an Agent; c) it is sold privately for well below market value, effectively costing the Seller far more than the commission saved.

Sport plays such an important role in encouraging students to develop healthy lifestyles through involvement in individual and team sports. From Prep to Year Three students St John’s students undertake a perceptual motor program prior to commencing the formal sporting program in Year Four. Our core physical education program from Year Four to Year 12 provides opportunities for students to acquire important physical and team skills so necessary beyond school. Participation in school sporting teams and individual pursuits builds self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and both team and leadership skills. When combined with the physical fitness derived from regular exercise these positive benefits can lead to strong academic achievement. Sport plays a vital role in the development of confident young leaders for the future.

BREAKING NEWS: Hannah Joye to represent Australia, Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014! (Old Collegian 2013)

s

Congratulations!

d d

Hello Readers

n

St John’s Anglican College is a member of The Associated Schools (TAS) and Junior TAS inter-school sporting competitions, giving students the opportunity to compete in a variety of team sports in Saturday fixtures. Swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals encourage healthy inter-school competition, team work and good sportsmanship among like-minded schools. The senior campus facilities include a new fully equipped gymnasium, multi-purpose courts and a double oval, and the adjacent swimming and fitness center is used for a variety of activities. The lake is nearby and is used for kayaking and other water activities. The St John’s community would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Hannah Joye (2013 St John’s Old Collegian) on her selection for the Commonwealth Games, Track and Field Team. Hannah is one of only three Australian high jumpers selected to compete in the Games in Glasgow in July. She has been a strong participant in the St John’s Anglican College sporting program throughout her schooling, always with a positive attitude and an encouraging word for her peers. She has inspired many students to pursue track and field sports through her outstanding high jump ability and her capacity for diligent training and physical fitness. In her TAS Competition Sports and as a State and National level representative level, Hannah showed dedication and tenacity. As a St John’s graduate she is a delightful young person who is well equipped to be a leader in her field and to capably represent her country in the international sporting arena. Congratulations Hannah. Kind regards Suzanne Bain Head, St John’s Anglican College Kindy to Year 6 07 3372 0888 Years 7 to 12 07 3372 0111 www.stjohnsanglicancollege.com.au enquiries@sjac.qld.edu.au

Centenary Suburbs Historical Society update by Vice President Lynda Young

Exploring the past in the Centenary suburbs - part 6 For readers who have been enjoying these articles, here is another interesting, historical walk. Park your car, or bicycle, in Boyland Street off Seventeen Mile Rocks Road, walk back through a small park to the beginning of a descending track. Previously part of a street called Yalford, the path follows the route of the Queensland Cement and Lime Company’s concrete conveyor structure, some of which can be seen as you walk down towards the Rocks Riverside Park. Your route is following approximately the boundary of two early farms that each extended from the escarpment to the river. The McMullen farm being on the left or east of the structure, the Henry farm on the right or west side. As you descend, it is interesting to think about the history of the conveyor. In 1936, the Queensland Cement and Lime Company Inc. was unloading dredged coral from Moreton Bay at its wharf below you and conveying the coral by truck to its cement manufacturing plant at Darra. In 1969 the company built an overhead, 3.5km long, conveyor system, supported by high concrete pillars to carry the coral to Darra. As you walk down the steep part of the path, you can see the Brisbane River and the tops of 25 huge, mature, mango trees bordering the base of the escarpment. Mango trees at that site are known to have already been mature fruit producing trees before the mid-1920s. They were planted by early pioneers of the area, most likely by the McMullen family who worked the land at that site from 1875-1917. You enter the park underneath the trees; they are the last visible remnant of the rich agricultural and market gardening history of the area. From first settlement in late 1864 and 1865, the alluvial soil on the riverside flats produced food crops that were taken by row boat to markets in Brisbane and Ipswich. Though by the 1930s some of the land in the Rocks Riverside Park area had been put to other uses, some market gardening continued until industrial and suburban development commenced. Arriving at the park there are lots of interesting things to see including the wharf area, remnants of the cement works and the allotments run by today’s keen gardeners. Centenary resident, Lester Skorka and Forest Lake resident, Belinda Bischa have both been involved in DanceSport for over 30 years, and have known each other since they were teenagers. They danced at the same studio together with different partners before moving to different studios. Belinda continued to dance in Queensland and competed at a high level throughout Queensland and Nationally. In 1999, she retired from competitive dancing, but was coaxed back to perform in the 2000 Olympics Closing Ceremony. Lester was transferred to Melbourne with work and competed with his wife at both a State and National level. In 1992, he stopped competing due to the arrival of his first child. In 2008, after returning to Brisbane a few years earlier he met up with Belinda and they decided to dance together for exercise and fitness. The pair were excited to compete in the Australian National Dance Association National Championships in New South Wales last month, winning both their events in Masters 1, Open Standard and Open New Vogue. “We came home with two perpetual trophies, which was quite interesting to bring home on the plane!” said Lester. “We have danced together competitively for over five years and love everything about Dancesport.” The recent wins add to their collection, having been State and Australian Champions numerous times.

Tarnya Smith MP and Members of St John’s Oxley Community Shed with the Queensland Rail sleepers. Oxley Men’s Shed to benefit from Rail Sleepers A little piece of history will be used for a much needed car park and garden beds at the St John’s Oxley Community Men’s Shed. Last month, I joined the Oxley Men’s Shed and Queensland Rail to hand over 100 timber rail sleepers to the Men’s Shed on behalf of Queensland Rail to help with development of the shed grounds, and to build garden beds. St John’s Oxley Community Shed does such great work for the community and I’m so pleased we have been able to help in a small way to this worthy cause. Instead of these sleepers going to waste, they are now being recycled to build raised garden beds and a much needed car park. Local business competes for national award Recently, local business, Blast Movement Technologies (BMT), was announced as one of seven finalists for the 2014 Telstra Queensland Small Business Award. BMT is a world leader in mine blasting technology that exports a world-first remote sensing technology that helps open-pit mines to reduce ore loss after blasting, to 24 countries world-wide. As a previous nominee of the Queensland Telstra Small Business Award and the winner of the 2013 Premier’s Export Award, there is no doubt that Blast Movement Technologies is a worthy nominee. I wish Darren and the team the very best of luck at the Telstra awards presentation in late June.
