Personally Speaking
By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis
I think you would all agree that we are living in a digital age. Technology is now such an integral part of our day to day lives that it’s hard to remember how we used to do things previously. I admit that I love new technology. I would be lost without my iphone and am amazed at people who disparage the internet and all it’s uses. Yet, in many other ways, I am oldschool. I still like to buy CD’s and nothing can replace that new-book smell or the weight of one in my hands. I prefer to actually go into a shop instead of buying online and, as much as I like to play games on my phone, nothing beats a board game with family and friends. There is pressure on all of us to ‘get with the times’, personally and professionally. What you are holding in your hand as you read this is testament to the fact that there is still a place for ‘flesh and blood’ publications, and we are not going anywhere! As long as people keep reading our publications and advertisers keep telling us how much it benefits their business to advertise with us, we will keep producing them. However, we do listen to feedback. There is a need to bridge the gap between what we currently have and the digital age in which we live. Which is why we are so pleased to announce that all our publications are now available online at our website: www. Lnp.net.au. Each publication will be updated each month, with back issues still available to view and interact with. The other bonus is you can read our publications in other areas and keep an eye on what’s happening slightly wider afield. Also, if you know someone who has moved, they can now still keep in touch with the area. What we love about this, is that it brings a whole other ease of use for you, the reader and for our customers who advertise their businesses with us. With live links, you can easily contact any business in our publications. Send them an email, right from your computer or ipad or be taken straight to their website for more information. And for community groups, organisations and charities, this is perfect too. If you, the reader are interested in finding out more about a club or group, simply click on the link to their website, email or facebook group and you are instantly in touch. It’s easy to keep up to date with each online version. Our facebook page will have a link to the latest edition each month as soon as it is uploaded, so if you haven’t already, ‘like’ the Centenary News on facebook so you receive the notifications (www.facebook.com/pages/the-Centenary-News). Alternatively, you can bookmark this page on our website: www.Lnp.net.au/centenary-news. The latest edition will be uploaded a day or two after the letterbox delivery. By providing this new version of our publications, we believe we are making it even easier to shop, volunteer and connect locally. As this is new, we would welcome any and all feedback, including any problems you may encounter. You can either send an email straight to me: editor@lnp.net.au or leave a comment on the facebook page. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Truth About Back Pain Don’t even think of taking another pain killer until you read this.
Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • Lower Back Pain • Muscle spasm or strains • Bulging lumbar discs • Numbness or soreness in your legs • Shooting hip or thigh pain Having back and leg pain can bring life to a standstill. You might not be able to play golf, work, or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep. You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced.
Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough pain killers. But if you mask the pain, it can prevent your back from healing – maybe even causing further damage and be unaware of it. Not to mention that many of the pain medications available are quite addictive and can have devastating side effects.
Is back pain keeping you from enjoying what you love to do? Could This Be The Solution To Your Back Pain? Over the past 26 years since Stott Chiropractic has opened it’s doors, we’ve seen hundreds of people with back pain leave the office pain free. Because we’ve seen it with our own eyes, we strongly believe ...
Back pain is NOT “just a part of life” and something you have to live with. Chiropractic has been around for over a hundred years, and has been used to Page 4 - June 2013 - The Centenary News

These professional athletes have the money to hire any kind of doctor they want, yet they choose to have a chiropractor on their team. Here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic … “ Ma nipulation [ ch iropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.” – British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” – Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery This means in just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again.

Puppies and kittens become adolescents during the period between about 5-12 months of age. This is a time of many changes in a young pet’s life - sexually maturity, changes to worming schedules, heartworm control and diet. Its important to keep up to speed with these rapid changes and greater commitment to your pets health program during this time. Desexing. Pets should be desexed at five to six months of age. There are many good reasons for desexing, and not many against. Overall, unless you want lots of little offspring running around the house, a desexed pet is a better pet. Unwanted litters, fighting and aggression towards humans, urine marking and roaming are all excellent reasons in favour of desexing. Testicular or mammary cancers are also common diseases in undesexed pets. Worming. Pets need to be wormed every three months for life after they reach six months of age. Intestinal worms are very common. They cause diarrhoea and general poor health, and can seriously affect the health of children if they become infected. Don’t forget to keep up with this important aspect of health and hygiene. Heartworm. A yearly heartworm injection is now available for dogs. It can be given from six months of age and is comparable in price to monthly heartworm tablets. The first injection, when given to dogs that are six months old, lasts only nine months. This is because of the fast growing period during adolescence. However, the next heartworm booster will then be due at around the same time as your pets annual vaccination, at 15-16 months of age. Microchipping. We recommend microchipping dogs and cats from six weeks of age. Tragically, only a very few lost or stolen pets are reunited with their rightful owners. These permanent ID chips are scanned for at almost all vet clinics and animal shelters across Australia, where your wayward pet may turn up. Diet. Puppies should be fed a puppy diet, adolescents should be fed a growth diet. Puppies and kittens need extra calcium for growing bones, quality protein for healthy bodies and high-energy carbohydrates to fuel those frenzies of playfulness. This changes as your pet matures, and at around five to six months of age, they should begin a growth diet. At about one year of age, they should begin adult diets. Premium pet foods get the best results. It’s hard work and a big commitment for an owner during the first year of your dog or cats life but don’t worry, things only get better from here! The effort spent on disease control, welfare and nutrition in the first 12 months will set your pet up for a long and happy life with its new family.
Jindalee Lions Club June Update
by Irene Dunning
We have had a very successful year so far. Our proudest moment was when we inducted three new members into the club, making our club a membership of 13 members. To be able to support our community, we need to raise money and in our case, it is the organising of a Sausage Sizzle at Harvey Normans at Oxley. Twice a month members are on a roster to carry out this projet. We also run a raffle at Dan Murphy’s Liquor Barn for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas. To assist the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest we also sell tickets on their behalf. Earlier in the Lions Year we organised care parcels for the aged in our community through Meals on Wheels and National Seniors. For this project we had assistance from St Peter’s College students who wrapped the parcels and presented them to the club. This project led to the Mervyn Hobb Literary Award in memory of our past member. Entries were received from members of the above organisation as well as others. From there we were approached to provide pillowslips for young patients in an Oncology Ward in a Hospital. In this instance, we were assisted by two members of the Forest Lake Crafters. We will be awarding a Children of Courage Plaque to the young lady who started this project which has spread Australia wide. It gave us a great deal of satisfaction and pleasure to be able to link these four projects. Our Youth of the Year Quest was held in February and we were grateful to have the use of the Jindalee State School’s Staff Room for interviews of our seven High School Students. The Speech Night part of the Quest is held two nights later. One of our entrants progressed to the Region Final and was awarded best presenter of a prepared speech. This led to the club providing several items to replace old equipment in the Staff Room. Another project that led to another that gave assistance in our area. Donations of $1000 were sent to the Fire ravaged areas at Tirrell in Tasmania and Coonabarabran in New South Wales and the floods in North Bundaberg. We twice sent care parcels to our soldiers in Afghanstan. We received letters of thanks that made this another worthwhile project. The soldiers really appreciated the thought. We now look forward to next year when we will again conduct Youth of the Year, the Literary Award, Parcels to Afghanstan as well as the Fire Poster Competition and our Children of Courage Award. We are sure there will be other occasions when we can give assistance to the residents of the Centenary area. For other information in regard to the club or membership, please contact Irene Dunning on 3372 9886 or 0407 880 756.
Centenary Suburbs Historical Society update
by Vice President Lynda Young
Capturing our history in brass The Centenary Suburbs History Society has, over the past four years, been active in marking significant past events by commissioning plaques around our suburb. What could be more enjoyable than a stroll around your parks to find these snippets of history set in natural surroundings? On 18 December 2010 Centenary Suburbs Historical Society celebrated the unveiling of a plaque to mark the 100th anniversary of Thomas Macleod’s pioneering biplane glider flights. Macleod was one of Australia’s pioneering aviators. He flew the first heavier-than-air biplane glider constructed in Queensland from the slopes near where this monument now stands. Formerly on farmland owned by Sir Hercules Sinnamon, the plaque can be reached by driving down Windermere Avenue off Seventeen Miles Rocks Road and walking across grass to where the plaque rests on a concrete plinth set amongst native shrubs in front of 17 Mile Creek. After his historic flight across the fields Thomas Macleod went on to have an illustrious career in aviation. He was instrumental in founding the Queensland Aero Club in 1910 and trained a group of Australian pilots for active First World War service in UK. The project to honour Macleod was driven by our society president, Caroline Hamilton, and member, Mal Lancaster. It took many years to get to this point, involving extensive research into Macleod’s life and the raising of adequate funds. The plaque was unveiled by the former Lord Mayor Campbell Newman with an impressive fly past of vintage aircraft above! Each month we shall bring you more information on your suburb’s plaques to visit at your leisure. Maybe take the children, or grandchildren, with you to learn about our heritage.

Coaching For Life
with Dr Kate Lemerle PhD MAPS Dr Kate Lemerle has over 25 years experience in the health industry and is a Coaching Psychologist with Chrysalis Wellness Services
With the most recent atrocity involving loss of life by people with a grudge, the bombing at the Boston Marathon, attention turns again to those unanswered questions – why, and what can we do to stop these terrible acts? In their disbelief and pain, people often ask whether there are ways we can prevent such tragedies from occurring. Some suggest that we need to stop conflict altogether, but this is too simple – conflict is inevitable. The more passionate people are about their beliefs, values, and preferences the more likely it is that there will be conflict between those who hold different views. And as much as we’d like to all live in harmony, difference is actually what we humans thrive on, not sameness. The important thing is to ask how we nurture h u m a n i t y, t o l e r a n c e , a n d p e a c e f u l a c c e p t a n c e of differences. It’s important to understand that passionate views on social issues reflect a mixture of emotion as well as intellectual factors. Passionate people have often come to their views after long, hard thinking about the pros and cons of different perspectives. This process of searching for something that answers your own individual questions or doubts is typically painful and difficult, so reaching a conclusion causes a feeling of emotional relief. Emotional relief can be seductive – it’s like a warm drink that fills the veins with peace, and so we are likely to hold firm to those views that give us this feeling. That is, people will defend their views against threats that usually come in the form of challenges from “non-believers”. And of course, the more actively we defend a point of view, the more committed we become to it, even if cracks begin to appear in the views we are hanging on to. Then we start to join up with others who share the same beliefs, and suddenly our place in the social pecking order can only be maintained if we hold firm to our beliefs. We see this in almost every social group. This further reinforces “stuckness” or holding rigidly to beliefs that might eventually start to show cracks. Promoting humanity is the only way we can tackle these serious social issues. Humanity is a process of shifting your social conscience beyond yourself and your immediate network to those people three or more degrees of separation from yourself, for example, relatives of your neighbours friends. You don’t know these people, but you are linked to them through two levels of social connection. It’s seen in the compassion, understanding, kindness and love shown to complete strangers who have a thin thread linking them to yourself. Our brains are wired for social connection: for love, respect, appreciation, acceptance, sympathy, empathy, compassion, and tenderness. These biologically-based emotions define us as humans and underlie passion which can be turned for evil or for good. If we want to truly build a more humane society, we need to actively draw attention to acts of positive passion, such as heroism, as the antidote to acts of negative passion. Centenary RSL Sub-branch update
The recent ANZAC Day was again a resounding success. This year the by Alan Worthington crowd was estimated at 4,000; one thousand more than last year and is shown in the photo below. This year, the inclusion of a catafalque party from 218 Squadron Air Force cadets from Corinda aided in the presentation of the service. The cadets, as well as participating in this sort of ceremony which highlights the drill standards that they have attained, also undertake many other activities. For example, they visit RAAF bases and learn skills like survival skills, field craft, navigation, meteorology and a whole lot more, as well as becoming more confident in their own abilities, which often positively affects other elements of their life. If you would like to know more about the Air Force Cadets, a good place to start is www.218sqn.aafc.org.au. As the Centenary of the ANZAC landing is approaching in 2015, our Sub branch is evaluating ways to best celebrate the occasion in our community. If you have any ideas, that you believe would enable the community to best remember the occasion, please contact us at the Sub Branch. On another subject, our Sub Branch continues to provide computer training for those older members of our community who until now, have not been able to become familiar with computers and their use. If you feel like you want to be able to send emails or browse the internet etc. give us a call. Many of those who have been helped often say “I should have done this years ago”. This training is not limited to members of our Sub Branch. If you would like to contact us for any reason, email: rslcent@tpg.com.au or phone 3279 5024, or better still drop in to our office under The Jindalee Bowls Club on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings.

Centenary National Seniors SENIORS
by Elaine
A little chilly outside? Wrap up warm and join us at the Jindalee Bowls Club, either as a new member or visitor, and become acquainted with 100+ friendly members. You will soon feel at home, and after reading our Newsletter, you will be surprised at all our listed activities; we know you will be eager to return. The date is 4th June at 9.30am. We start with a delicious morning tea, a short meeting followed by a speaker or entertainers who bring us to life with their songs and music and members showing their lively dance steps. Our speaker last month was Susannah Friis from Centenary News who spoke about her recent trip to Thailand. This was an extremely interesting topic. Our entertainment for June will be ‘The Bayside Harmony Quartet’. Our Coach trip to Beaudesert Museum in May included a guided tour with lunch at the local RSL. We always learn something new on our trips, and for only $50 we enjoy morning tea and a two course Lunch, and we always have an ice-cream stop on the way home. Our next trip in July will be to ‘Christmas in July’ at St Bernards, Mt Tambourine. Our ‘Go Card’ Explorer Trip this month will be to the newly revamped ‘City Hall’ where we will be taken on a guided tour behind the scenes. Our last Trip to Parliament House was a great success. Our ‘Steady Musical Steppers’ increase in numbers at the Middle Park Uniting Church each Monday morning at 9am, also the Zumba Gold classes are held at the same venue, 9.15am each Wednesday. These two classes are open to the public, so you can just turn up and join in. Our MahJong Members will be getting together again on 6th and 13th June, 10am at Mt Ommaney Library to pit their wits and enjoy the friendship of everyone in the room. This group is only open to National Seniors Members. The Zone 101 Annual Conference at Ipswich was also Ipswich National Seniors 25th birthday celebrations, and was very well attended by all the NSA Clubs in our Zone. As you can see, there are always plenty of activities including morning teas, evening dinners, plays, concerts, and on the third Sunday each month we enjoy a social afternoon with our Jindalee Bowling Club friends. We look forward to greeting you at the door on 4th June and making you feel welcome. For further information please call 3376 1986.
Meals on Wheels available in Centenary suburbs
February 2014 will see the 25th anniversary of the commencement of Meals on Wheels in the Centenary Suburbs. In that time the service has delivered in excess of 125,000 meals to its clients. Meals on Wheels is a community based service for people who are frail or aged as well as the younger disabled and their carers. Clients are referred to the service by their doctor, family member, community health services or themselves. The purpose of the meal service is to enable people to continue to live comfortably in their own home. The service provides fruit juice, hot soup, a main course and a dessert as a meal. Meals are delivered by volunteers from Monday to Friday between the hours of 11.00am to 12.30pm. Special dietary requirements will be supplied if advised by the client’s doctor. The current cost of a meal is $7.00. All meals to clients are delivered by volunteers and Centenary Meals on Wheels currently has approximately 106 volunteers. The volunteers are made up of retirees, mothers who assist whilst their children are at school and employees whose employer sees the benefit in their staff volunteering for such work. Meals on Wheels is not only providing a service in suppling meals, but clients also have the added benefit of a friendly visitor and a cheery “how are you?” each time they deliver. If you are interested in the service, can volunteers some time or require more information, please contact Centenary Meals on Wheels on 3279 1974, or send an email to 331cmow@gmail.com, or visit the website www.centenarymealsonwheels.com.au.
