Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis It seems to me that one of the biggest problems with us as a society is a lack of self-reflection. I’m amazed at the number of times when I’m chatting with someone and I ask a question that the answer comes back “I don’t know...I’ve never really thought about that before.” It seems that people don’t reflect and ponder on things like we used to. Obviously, too much self-reflection can lead to, at worst, narcissism or just plain old selfishness but it is necessary to have insight into ourselves, others and the world around us. And psychology backs up the importance of selfreflection and insight with many therapists recommending mindfulness or meditation in some form or another. I was listening to the radio the other day - and I’ll show my age by saying it was an ABC station! - and it was discussed that it is so important to allow children to process and self-reflect at the end of their school day, and how, often, as parents it can be easy to overlook this important part of the day. You see, if, as children, we have the opportunity to process the happenings of the day with a parent, we begin our journey of self-reflection. Without self-reflection, it’s harder to learn from mistakes, we go on to repeat behaviour that is potentially harmful because we haven’t been taught how to reflect on our actions and learn how to make different choices that will result in a more positive outcome. What we lack as a society is also what psychologists call ‘insight’, which is according to the dictionary, ‘penetrating mental vision or discernment; faculty of seeing into inner character or underlying truth.’ We barely know ourselves, so how can we even begin to have an understanding of others or the world at large? Some of you may have read this column in the April edition about noise and our need for some quiet - not just audibly but internally. I think the amount of noise we contend with on a daily basis is directly related to our lack of self reflection and insight. With so much else going on, with so many things vying for our attention, it can be hard to break away and just ‘be’. I’ve said it before but it bears saying again - we are human BEings, not human DOings. We desperately need to step aside from our lives, take a breath and take some time to think! And not only to think but to ponder, wonder and ruminate. On the very next page you’ll find a story about the labyrinth right here in Centenary at St Catherine’s church. The labyrinth is a wonderful way to take that time out - even just 15 minutes - to simply be alone with your thoughts and feelings and reconnect with yourself. The labyrinth is open to the public, available day or night, won’t cost you a cent and is at most a ten minute drive away. Why not make time to get some space in this fast paced life we all live? Drop the kids off at school, take a detour on your way to work, or whatever your daily routine is, leave the phone in the car and just...breathe.

Local labyrinth open to all

Reverend Tania Eichler, with some members of the working group for the labyrinth, Denis and Aphra Freeman, Sandra Waterton and Susan Plant. In November 2013, the labyrinth located at St Catherine’s Anglican Church was operational after the idea of creating a labyrinth was first raised in 2012, and officially blessed the following month. Eighteen months on, members of the church and community alike are encouraged to make good use of the structure. “The Labyrinth is open to the whole community,” said Susan Plant, part of the working group that created the labyrinth. “It is an outdoor structure, and easily accessed by the community. People can visit and sit by, or walk the labyrinth, at their leisure. It was made for young and old as a sanctuary in nature, to pause and reflect. It is non-denominational and multifaith; no church affiliation is required. “We just ask that people respect the peace and beauty of this place and teach children to understand how to behave appropriately to keep it open for all to use.” Labyrinths can be traced back 3 500 years and were initially created to provide a place for people to engage in a prayer journey, without leaving their native land when crusades and the plague made pilgrimage to the Holy Land almost impossible. And they are still used throughout the world today, even more relevant in the busy, high tech world of the 21st Century. “There is no right or wrong way to use the labyrinth. We all have different reasons for finding times of reflection in our lives. For many it is just finding a time and place to pause and let go of life’s cares and concerns, for some it is asking for space to discover answers to deeper questions in their lives, or maybe it is a place to seek a spiritual connection or better understanding of their existing faith. “Although there are written suggestions regarding ‘walking the labyrinth’ this is up to the individual and all experiences will be personal and even vary for a single individual on different occasions,” said Susan. The labyrinth located at St Catherine’s Anglican Church, 43 Macfarlane St, Middle Park, is open to the public, any time of the day or night, with sensor lights installed to ensure safety. So next time you need a break from the daily grind and noise, why not take the opportunity of some peace and quiet right in your own neighbourhood and head to the labyrinth.

Kiwanis turns 100

What a way to celebrate a 100th birthday. Late April, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane hosted a civic reception for the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane in recognition of their support to the community. On January 21st 1915, the day the state of Michigan granted the charter to the Detroit No 1 Kiwanis Club USA, the world changed. One hundred years on, 13 300 clubs with over 600 000 Kiwanis members around the globe work together to make it a better place in which to live. About 70 Kiwanis members and guests gathered in the Balmoral Room at City Hall where the Lord Mayor spoke about the good work voluntary groups such as Kiwanis do within our community. He also presented a Walter Zellar Award to Mrs Ann Earle, of Sinnamon Park, a member of the Brisbane Club for her individual effort in fund raising for The Eliminate Project. Kiwanis, working in conjunction with UNICEF on The Eliminate Project, will raise $110 million to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus by vaccinating 60 000 000 women and their children in third world countries. Ann has raised almost $2,000 through making and selling preserves and jams. This money has Lord Mayor, the Right Honourable, Councillor saved the lives of 1 000 mothers and their future children. Graham Quirk, presented Kiwanian, Ann Earle of The Governor of Kiwanis Australia District, Mr Peter Zander Sinnamon Park, with a Walter Zellar Award at the civic flew in from Adelaide to attend the birthday celebration and reception after the President of the Brisbane Kiwanis addressed the gathering. Club Mal Lancaster spoke to the guests about Ann’s Mal Lancaster, President of the Brisbane Club said, “It was achievement of raising funds for the Eliminate Project. a unique acknowledgement of our service to the community. Our members are a like minded group of people, who unselfishly give of their time to community service. The Lord Mayor and his staff made them feel very special their contribution to society does not go unnoticed.” The evening concluded with a video from the President of the Kiwanis International Foundation, Robert A Parton Jr, who congratulated all members for their contribution in supporting children and communities for the past 100 years.

Some of our clients have said that their dog is their ‘fur child’ and an integral part of the family. More than any other animal, dogs have evolved to become acutely attuned to humans and our behaviour and emotions. While dogs are able to understand many of the words we use, they’re even better at interpreting our tone of voice, body language, and gestures. A loyal dog will look into your eyes to gauge your emotional state and try to understand what you’re thinking and feeling (and to work out when the next walk or treat might be coming, of course!) While most dog owners are clear about the immediate joys that come with sharing their lives with canine companions, many remain unaware of the physical and mental health benefits that can also accompany the pleasure of playing with or snuggling up to a furry friend. Studies have shown that ownership of pets, especially dogs, is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and greater longevity. Studies have also found that: • dog owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets, • people with dogs have lower blood pressure in stressful situations than those without pets. One study even found that when people with borderline hypertension adopted dogs from a shelter, their blood pressure declined significantly within five months; • playing with a dog or cat can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax; • pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels (indicators of heart disease) than those without pets; • heart attack patients with dogs survive longer than those without; • pet owners over age 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to their doctors than those without pets; As we all tend to look and live by our phones, when we are with our pets they no doubt enable us to increase in social contact and interaction and ‘real’ conversations with others. We would love to hear what your pet means to you or how they have helped you? Email us at centenaryvetsurgery@ gmail.com and title it ‘I love my pet’.

Providing fun and fitness for over 30 years Fun, upbeat, pop music is the soundtrack to Physical Culture (also known as Physie) that fuses dance styles such as jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, aerobic dance and even yoga. The innovative choreography changes annually and is designed for maximum variety and fun. Physie is the perfect combination of movements designed to increase strength, fitness and flexibility in girls. The benefits are increased co-ordination, brain development and confidence. Physie is a synchronised, team-based sport that’s social and fun and an excellent low impact dance and aerobic activity. Centenary Physical Culture Club was established in the early 1980’s and has been a part of the community for over 30 years. Participation in Physie has decreased over the last decade but is on the rise again with teacher Libby hopeful of rebuilding the club to its former glory. Designed with Australian families in mind, classes start from $5 a week. With no expensive costumes or recital fees, Physie is an affordable way to learn to dance and keep fit with a touch of glamour and a lot of fun. Grandmothers, mothers, daughters and grand-daughters can all be members of the same Physie club and share their involvement in this unique sport. From ages three to 73, Physie is a sport for life. The Centenary club caters to all ages and abilities so Physie is an experience you can share right throughout your life. Generations of Australian women have cherished the friendships and close-knit bonds that Physie creates. More than a sport, Physie is a welcoming community of fun, healthy, active families. There is an aura of confidence around Physie girls of all ages. Taught to stand tall, with strength and pride, they are team players committed to achieving their goals. Physie focuses on developing the self-esteem of its students. By teaching them to have a positive relationship with their bodies, students grow in confidence and self-assurance. Physie is passionate about nurturing students’ total wellbeing, in both mind and body. Physie is an accepting and encouraging team sport, where every member is supported and motivated to be the best they can be. Local car enthusiast opens motorsport museum Local Westlake resident, Ian Bone, had a vision when he opened MotorFocus a diecast model car shop in Westlake Shopping Centre some 14 years ago, that he would eventually establish a motor museum. In the ensuing years he sold the business but pushed on looking for that elusive museum opportunity. In 2006, together with a couple of diehard local petrol heads and the Ipswich Art Gallery, the ‘Colours of Motorsport Exhibition’ was put together to present a taste of Ian’s vision using much of the memorabilia and vehicles collected over time. It was very successful with 23,000 visitors passing through the doors over the 12 weeks it was open. Opening in January 2015, the Queensland Motorsport Museum in the Ipswich City Mall, has already been visited by motoring enthusiasts from around the globe. The constantly changing displays provide visitors with a unique insight into a cross section of motoring history. There are both road and race vehicles of interest including the Peter Brock Dakar Rally Car, the ‘Etter Special’ 1937 Speed car and a 1971 Honda N360 barn find. There is original artwork, prints, photography from world renowned artists, as well as Motoring Memorabilia and over 200 Diecast Models. The venue, in the Ipswich City Square, is readily accessible with undercover parking and easy access to/from public transport. There is also mobility friendly access as well as being able to cater for community groups and car clubs which are always welcome. The Queensland Motorsport Museum facilities provide exclusive opportunities to acquire memorabilia, artistic and photographic lines, and access to an extensive research library combined with a small theatrette/ meeting room. All facilities are available to create a unique experience in an exclusive environment for regular meetings or that special customer event. Expansion plans are already underway with the real possibility of expanding from the existing 380sq.mtrs to over 1500sq. mtrs – increasing the display capacity to over 70 vehicles and many more displays of unique motoring history. The Queensland Motorsport Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm for an admission charge that certainly won’t break the bank.

a message from the desk of

BernieRIPOLLMP FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y

As many of you would know by now, I have made the decision to not contest the next federal election. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my constituents in the electorate of Oxley for their constant support and faith in me as their representative in Canberra since 1998. It is always a great honour to be given the opportunity to serve one’s community and I am exceptionally thankful for that privilege. There are many people whom I must thank including my family and friends who have been of great support over my long career and acknowledge the effort and sacrifice they continue to make. I would like to thank the volunteers and the branch members who have dedicated so much of their time to not only support me and my staff, but to the entire electorate. I want to thank my Electorate Office staff Chris Ramsay, Pam McCreadie, Amy Ketter and Winston Harris and the many other staff and volunteers who have worked for me and the people of Oxley over a very long period of time. It is because of their hard work that we have been able to achieve so much. I am proud that I made a difference in our community since being elected in 1998 and have treasured the relationships with the many community organisations, the many multi-cultural groups, people and characters that make the western corridor of Brisbane and Ipswich such a wonderful place to live and raise a family. At the last election, I made a commitment to the people of Oxley to serve them for the complete term of this Parliament and I will honour that commitment in full right up to election day. My Electorate Office will continue to provide you and the electorate with full service and I encourage you to give us a call if we can be of any assistance. Page 8 - June 2015 - The Centenary News

Local teen chosen to represent at National competitions Many people may be unaware of the sport of synchronized skating, although the sport has been a competitive event in Australia since 1984. Local resident, 13 year old Jayde Ramsey has been ice skating since she was around six years old. Jayde started learning at Aussie Skate, the learn to skate program held during school terms at Ice World Acacia Ridge. Jayde was drawn to the team sport of Synchronized Ice Skating where she has since made many friends and is an integral team-member. “The friendships that I have made within the Club and my teams mean a lot to me,” said Jayde. “Everyone is very supportive and we help each other to be the best that we can be. I enjoy the team spirit that our club has.” Jayde has been selected to skate with two national level teams, skating in the Open division and the Advanced Novice division and is also skating in the ‘Ice Stars’ Theatre On-Ice Team. Dedication to the sport sees Jayde training on Thursday evenings, Friday evenings and on Saturdays at Ice World Acacia Ridge. The time and effort put in is working towards the ‘Fun in the Sun’ Theatre on Ice competition which will be held in July and the Synchronized Ice Skating Clubs Championships held in August at Ice World Boondall rink as well as other events later in the year. Jayde hopes to continue skating and has coaching aspirations. “I would like to maybe travel, train and skate with a team in America or Canada one day. I would also like to coach our Aussie Skate Levels when I am older.” The Queensland Synchronized Ice Skating Club is a not-for-profit sporting organisation. The Club hosts various fundraising events to assist with the on-going costs for skaters that compete locally, as well as in State, National and International competitions. The Club is also looking for sponsors and partners that may be able to assist with various activities and equipment, including fitness, team clothing, etc. For more information regarding fundraising and sponsorship opportunities or if your child is interested in taking up the sport, send an email to qsicsecretary@gmail.com.

With a luxurious voice and elegant approach to music, Sarah Collyer has been influenced by jazz greats like Nina Simone and Miles Davis, but finds inspiration in contemporary artists like Melody Gardot, Diana Krall and even Tom Waits. Sarah’s 2012 album ‘Yesterday’s Blues’ has received nationwide airplay on ABC radio and is also distributed throughout Japan. A consummate and seasoned performer, Sarah Collyer’s live shows are a hit with audiences who love her soulful original songs, and engaging stage presence. The Hoo Ha Swing Ensemble is an acoustic quintet presenting a unique fusion of gypsy, swing and swoon tunes, reminiscent of Tin Pan Alley and Speakeasies. The Hoo Ha Swing Ensemble is led by Mia O’Brien on guitar and vocals, with Tim O’Brien on acoustic guitar, Jodi Murtha on acoustic bass, and Suzanne Hibbs on Cajon with Sam O’Brien on EWI (extraordinary wind instrument). Described as having the heart of Django Reinhardt and the soul of the 30’s, the ensemble blends original tunes with jazz and gypsy standards to create a vibrant, festive experience. Music at the Hub takes place at Centenary Community Hub, 171 Dandenong Rd Mt Ommaney, and doors open at 6.00pm with ample parking on site, before performances begin at 7pm. The cost is $10 entry per person (under 14 years old free entry) and is cash only, cost includes entry to lucky door prize. Light meals, nibble platters, snacks, soft drinks, water, tea and coffee will be available at very reasonable prices. BYO alcoholic drinks only, don’t forget your glasses; audience members are asked to not bring snacks or food, as the sale of food and soft drinks helps to keep the entry price low. CENTENARY C

National Seniors

Update by Marlene Worthington, Branch President Upd

A little chilly outside? Wrap up warm and join us at the Jindalee Bowls Club, either as a new member or visitor, and become acquainted with 80+ friendly members. You will soon feel at home. And after reading our Newsletter, you will be surprised at all our listed activities. We know you will be eager to return. The date is Tuesday 2nd June at 9.30am. We start with a delicious morning tea, a short meeting followed by a speaker or entertainer who brings us to life with their songs and music and members showing their lively dance steps. Our entertainer last month was Mike Kregor singing along with all his different guitars. He was very entertaining. Our entertainer for June will be Kylie Castle. Our coach trip to the Robotic Farm out on the Scenic Rim last month was very different. Whoever thought we would ever see cows milking themselves three times a day and enjoying it? We also sampled the milk and found it very enjoyable. We always learn something new on our trips, and for only $50 per person, we enjoy morning tea and a two course lunch, and have an ice-cream stop on the way home. Our next trip in July will be to see the miniature Strathgordon Clydesdale horses. Our ‘Go Card’ Explorer Trip this month will be a surprise. The last trip to the QANZAC display at the State Library and the Old Hollywood Costumes display at City Hall Museum was a great success. Our ‘Steady Steppers’ increase in numbers at the Middle Park Uniting Church each Monday morning at 9am. This class is open to the public, so you can just turn up and join in. The MahJong group is getting together again on 4th and 11th June, 9am at Mt Ommaney Library where members pit their wits and enjoy the friendship of everyone in the room. This activity is free to National Seniors members and we do teach the game. The Zone 101 Annual Conference at Lions Soccer Club last month and was well attended by all the NSA Clubs in our Zone. As one of the four Clubs celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, our branch was also one of the hosts for the day. As you can see, there is always plenty of activities including morning teas, evening dinners, plays and concerts to do. I never hear anyone saying that they’re bored. We look forward to greeting you at the door on June 2nd and making you feel welcome. For further information please call me on 3279 1444.

Tarnya SmithMP

State Member for Mt Ommaney

It has been a busy month in the Mount Ommaney electorate, with local ANZAC day services, community meeting and events. It was great to see record crowds turn out for ANZAC day to honour the sacrifice of our servicemen and women. Locally, I attended services at Corinda, Centenary and Oxley. It was inspiring to not only see the sheer number of people at the services, but also of our young people. From young children all the way through to senior school students, the dedication and commitment of local residents to the ANZAC spirit was on display for our entire region to see. At the Centenary Suburbs service, we unveiled a statue of Simpson and his donkey to commemorate the ANZAC Centenary year. This statue will be a permanent reminder to all local residents of the ANZAC legend and mark this centenary year. A big thanks also need to go to those groups who made the Centenary service great again this year, including Alan Worthington and the Centenary RSL sub branch for organising another touching service this year, Centenary Historical Society for the Centenary Poppy and fundraising drive and Kiwanis Club of Brisbane for cooking the breakfast for local residents. Everyone worked together to make the service special and a fitting tribute to our ANZAC legend. That’s why this month’s Spotlight of the Month is the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane. The Kiwanis Club work tirelessly throughout our community and are on the lookout for new members. Kiwanis International is a global organisation of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. In an atmosphere of fun and friendship, Kiwanians aim to make a difference. Kiwanis meet regularly and often hold events and work with the community. Please contact Mal Lancaster for upcoming events and meetings on 0403 620 979, www.aus.kiwanisone.org or www.facebook.com/pages/Kiwanis-Club-of-Brisbane.

Centenary Suburbs . Historical Society UPDATE BY CAROLINE HAMILTON, PRESIDENT

The Centenary of ANZAC Poppy Project was successfully completed and the poppy-covered letter ‘C’ was officially displayed at the ANZAC Day commemoration ceremony at Mt Ommaney on 25 April. Centenary Suburbs Historical Society members received very positive feedback on the project from both those who attended the ceremony and those who had seen it on display at Cr Bourke’s office or the Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre. Members of the local community were very generous in their donations - over $1350.00 - which has been passed to the Centenary RSL sub-branch and Legacy. Over 3000 poppies were knitted, crocheted and constructed to completely cover the ‘C’. The ‘C’ has been on displayed at the Mt Ommaney Library for the month of May and then will be moved to Westpac Mt Ommaney for June. The Society is very appreciative of the community contribution to the project. Well done to all who contributed. The Centenary News - June 2015 - Page 15
