Children across the state will get the chance to have some serious fun during this year’s National Playgroup Week from the 24 to 28 March. The theme is More than Play with the week-long celebration paying tribute to the importance of parents, carers and children learning and playing together in those vital early years. Earlier this month, I announced $1,561,365 in new funding for eight local schools as part of the Government’s new education program, Great Results Guarantee. This $1,561,365 is part of the Government’s $131 million commitment to boost student outcomes in Queensland state schools, by focusing on the early years. Everything the Govern-ment is doing in the education sphere is focused on achieving better student outcomes, and this announcement delivers on our commitment to revitalise frontline services as promised at the election. As the Member for Mount Ommaney, I want every Queenslander to enjoy a quality education experience so that they are well equipped to enter further education, training and employment. This funding is about investing in our future, our children, and ensuring that Queensland remains a great state with great opportunity for generations to come. I also would like to congratulate the Probus Club of Jindalee which is among those groups that were successful under the latest round of Government community funding. The Probus Club of Jindalee works tirelessly out in the community and I’m thrilled their work can continue. These grants will go a long way towards helping the community and providing services throughout Mount Ommaney. They are designed for approved not-for-profit organisations and are not intended to replace existing sources of support for these organisations. For more information or to see a full list of recipients please visit www.olgr.qld.gov.au and click on ‘grants’.

Personally Speaking
By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis
As we head into autumn 2014, we will hopefully begin to enjoy some cooler weather, after, what has felt like to me, a very hot summer. I always enjoy it when there is that hint of change in the air. Come to think of it, I just like change generally! Which is why I am excited about some of the changes we have made recently, here at Local News Publications. You will notice that this edition of the Centenary News is on full gloss paper, as opposed to the matte paper it was previously printed on. Our publications have seen a few different printing processes over the last 20 years and we are pleased to now move to gloss paper. Printing on full gloss paper gives a sharpness and cleaner look to advertisements, photos and text, as well as a depth of colour that can’t be achieved on the previous paper. We know it also improves the overall look of our publications, which is something we are constantly striving for and looking to improve. It’s a fine balance between ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ and wanting to give our readers and advertisers the very best we can offer. With that in mind, the other change we have made is the decision for our publications to be delivered to homes over a weekend, rather than mid week. As you would know, there are rather a lot of catalogues and other material that fight for space in your letterbox during the week. Changing to a weekend delivery, where fewer items are delivered, will increase the effectiveness of the delivery and give our publications greater prominence. Please keep in mind, that whilst we have changed delivery companies, the same rules apply - houses with ‘no junk mail’ stickers will not be delivered to, as well as houses that have an obscured letterbox. If neither of these apply to your house, and you or someone you know does not receive the Centenary News, please do let us know. We pay for full coverage and are happy to pass on any non-delivery issues to the delivery company. To make our publications accessible to those who have ‘no junk mail’ stickers, or have moved from the area but still maintain an interest in the community, our online versions are able to be viewed from your desktop computer, your tablet or smartphone. We know that many of you do read the Centenary News online, so I wanted to remind you that any email address or website is a direct link. This means you can simply and quickly access any of the advertisers or community groups with one click. You will be taken straight to their website where you can lodge an enquiry or else be taken to your email application where you can send off an email. Living in this technological age really is fun and exciting! It gives us all so many more ways to connect. As always, we value and appreciate your feedback and welcome any comments, either on the new look or the delivery. And in the meantime, enjoy the cooler days and nights by getting involved with a community group or simply utilise one of our many great parks and walking tracks. We live in a fantastic area - let’s make the most of it!

Crime Prevention volunteers needed With a reduction in recent numbers, Sergeant Elaine Burns, Crime Prevention Co-ordinator, is seeking to expand the Volunteers in Policing (ViP) Program within the Centenary Crime Prevention Unit. “I am pleased to say that in the past year, one former Volunteer in Policing has gone on to achieve his goal of becoming a Police Officer and the other has attained a position as a civilian Watchhouse Officer,” said Sgt Burns. “Volunteering through our program provides an insight into the QPS and gives formative experience for prospective recruit applicants. Current Volunteers in Policing (ViPs) range in age from 21- 75 years, proving that age is no barrier. “The ViPs at the Centenary Crime Prevention Unit have varied professional back grounds; retired executives, teachers, legal secretaries, managers, trainers, tradespeople and students,” said Sgt Burns. “I find the mix of age and life experience provides an enriched Crime Prevention Unit.” The Volunteers in Policing program involves ViPs working with Police to address and provide a range of customer service, community safety and crime prevention needs in the community. ViPs undertake a range of duties which may include, but are not limited to: letterbox drops in crime hot spots; Lock It or Lose It campaigns aimed at vehicle related crimes; home and business security audits; property identification programs; displays; and community education sessions. To be eligible, applicants must be: 18 years of age, or over; willing and able to participate in the mandatory four day training program; prepared to commit to the ViP program for a minimum of 12 months; and agree to the Queensland Police Service conducting national criminal history check. Application forms are available on the Queensland Police Service web site at www.police.qld.gov.au under ‘Join Us’. Recruiting officially commenced on Monday 3 February and closes 5pm Monday 3 March 2014. Successful applicants will be required to undertake a four day training program April 3-4. Further information is available through the Centenary Crime Prevention Unit on 3131 7381.

Centenary National Seniors Update
Our first meeting of the year was well attended, showing lots of smiles and well wishes on the Members’ faces. It was like a large family reunion, with new faces met at the door and made to feel at home. Are you 50 or over? We invite you to join ‘our family’ at the Jindalee Bowls Club on Tuesday 4th March at 9. 30am for a fun filled morning where our guest speaker will talk about his most recent trip into the Simpson Desert. It is so nice to please everybody. Our Brisbane Explorer Trip last month ‘Morning Melodies’ at the Bronco’s League Club was enjoyed by everyone. We use public transport (bus, train or ferry) and we always find our destinations with everyone together. Our first Coach trip for the year will be to the Samford area where we will visit the Museum, Hay Cottage before having lunch at the Flying Nun café. Each alternate month we either a Coach or an Explorer trip. The Coach trips are very affordable, only $50 for an all day outing including Morning tea and a two course lunch in a very affordable Coach. Yes, we do enjoy our exercise classes, ‘Steady Steps’ at the Middle Park Uniting Church hall every Monday morning at 9am. Everyone welcome! Cost $7. Also our ‘Zumba Gold’ classes at the same venue each Wednesday morning at 9. 15am, cost $8. Our clever MahJong players meet at the Mt Ommaney Library on the first two Thursdays of each month at 9-noon. Don’t be shy, we will teach you how to play (for Members only at no cost). We also enjoy morning teas, evening dinners, concerts and plays. We invite suggestions from our Members for other activities to start up. I feel at times that we all have an ache or two, but sometimes an outing like this can help us feel better, just like a tasty medicine. If you would like to join us, just turn up at our next meeting. We will meet you at the door where you will receive a newsletter detailing all our activities, a free raffle ticket and then an enjoyable morning tea. For more details, please ring me on 3376 1986.

Centenary RSL Sub-Branch Update
by Alan Worthington
A major role of any RSL Sub Branch is to encourage the support of the younger members of the surrounding community. At Centenary, this takes the form of attending school functions, giving organised talks, encourage entry into the RSL Youth Development Programme and encouraging participation at the local ANZAC Day Service. The success of these activities is evidenced in the large turnout of children, often in conjunction with their school, on ANZAC Day. The recent establishment of a Naval Cadet Unit in the local area, will provide a great opportunity for the local youth to experience the camaraderie resulting from group activities and challenges, gain new skills and learn to be independent and skilful in a whole range of activities they would not normally have access to. The cadet unit is newly established and hence there is a need for helpers to maintain the wide range of activities undertaken, as well as to raise funds to enable some activities to take place. If you are prepared to give some of your time to work with young people and to raise funds we would love to hear from you. Ex-service people (of any service) are particularly welcome as your past experience will be invaluable, with the naval cadet unit being one of the few to conduct both naval, land and air training. Those with a blue card are particularly most welcome. We envisage Bunnings BBQ’s will constitute a large portion of the fund raising efforts. If you have children who would like to come along to look and see or get involved, please contact the Commanding Officer: Chiu-Hing Chan 0411 763 641, or email: cchan@acgcb.org.au. For RSL related matters please call 3279 5024 or email: rslcent@tpg.com.au.
Have you ever thought you would like to add some Australian native plants to your garden, and you are not sure which ones to choose or how to look after them? Would you be interested in learning more about our wonderful native plants from the people who love to grow them? If so, you are invited to the meeting of the Society for Growing Australian Plants (SGAP) on 15 March in the Centenary Uniting Church Hall, 37 Riverhills Rd, Middle Park. Come at 9.30 for morning tea before the program proper which will begin at 10am and features a talk by Ed Parker from this area. He will talk about the reserves and native plants in the Centenary suburbs. There will be an opportunity to talk to members who can help you find out how to learn more about the wonderful variety of native plants for all types of gardens. Many natives can be added to existing gardens. There is an opportunity to pick up a native plant in the raffle, enjoy a shared lunch and a guided walk along the Westlake – Mt Ommaney riverside reserve. The Western Suburbs Branch of SGAP invites you to join them on 15 March, to enjoy finding out some more about wonderful Australian native plants. For more information about the Society for Growing Australian Plants, go to www.sgapqld.org.au.

Hello Readers There was a great buzz around St John’s as our students eagerly started their school year. We know from experience that students who commit to being involved in all there is to offer, build their confidence, learn how to get along with others, establish positive relationships and do well academically. Such is the case with our 2013 graduates who have received the highest ever academic results in the history of the College. The achievement of 6, OP1’s from a cohort of 88 eligible students is not only the highest number in the history of the College but a very credible percentage and favourably compares with Queensland’s best schools. Having 59 students in the OP 1-10 band is very pleasing and due largely to the commitment of the individuals involved and the whole year level working together to support one another in the goal of producing their very best outcome. 89% of our students were in the OP 1-15 band, a statistic which has been rising every year and places St John’s favourably in the rankings. The Core Skills Test scores were very credible and is a testimony to the hard work applied by the students and the encouragement and challenge provided by our very talented teachers. Recently our College community welcomed back our graduates of 2013 who received an OP 1-5 and invited them to sign the Scholar’s Book which records their fine achievement in the Archives of College. Some students opted to study the Business Certificate Three Course as part of their senior studies course through our partnership with AXIOM College, which guaranteed those students the equivalent of an OP 15 upon completion. Over the years as we have developed our Senior Pathways program which has provided a strengthening of post school outcomes for St John’s graduates with future study and employment options for our young people in the courses of their choice being assured.
A place for TOMORROW’S LEADERS St John’s Anglican College offers families in south west Brisbane coeducation from Kindergarten to Year Twelve. Forming young hearts and minds St John’s offers personalised learning for exceptional achievement. Shaped by Christian values in the Anglican tradition as they guide everyday College life, St John’s graduates are well educated, respectful, resilient and compassionate; equipped to be people of influence in their communities.

Veterinary News
by Dr Scott Snellgrove BVSc (Qld)
Arthritis affects man and beast alike with advancing age certainly the major factor. Genetics and bio-mechanical factors are also involved since cartilage breakdown is, for a large part, the end result of production of destructive inflammatory enzymes. Young pets already affected with hip dysplasia, cruciate ligament injuries or osteochondrosis of the elbows are at special risk because abnormal anatomy and mismatched joint sockets create uneven wear which speeds joint breakdown. In some cases, early corrective surgeries may help stabilise joints and pre-empt some changes. Traditionally, anti-inflammatory painkillers have been a mixed blessing. While offering good short term comfort and increased mobility to help prevent wasting and muscle loss, some painkillers can also block the very cartilage repair processes that help, which may aggravate matters long term.

It’s no fun watching your mate grow old and yet it may not be game over quite yet. What to do then? The first step is to minimise weight or even consider keeping your pet slightly underweight. Continued light exercise is recommended as far as the pet is able. Swimming helps avoid overloading sore joints. Ask the vet about cartilage protective agents which will reduce pain by helping improve the Teflon coating of joints and increasing lubrication. High doses of EPA, (a component of fish oil) will also help block destructive cartilage busting enzymes. It needs to be taken either as a highly fortified joint supplement or as an additive to special proprietary joint therapy foods. Glucosamine sulphate is well known to humans and may help provide raw materials for joint repair. Evidence is still mixed and several months may be required to see full effects. Green lipped mussel, sea cucumber and turmeric also have useful anti-inflammatory fatty acids (ETAs) with analgesic properties and are both safe and readily available as proprietary joint “powders”. These may be heat affected so a good quality and well stored product is advised. Lastly, stem cells are now also being offered as a joint injection generally as an adjunct to surgery. They can boost cartilage production though it may not be of the same dense quality as the original. For most dogs where quality of life and mobility is the priority, some analgesics will be required. When choosing these we try to balance the gut and kidneys safety with its cartilage sparing properties. If used properly, these non steroidal (NSAID) drugs allow dogs to stay active and thereby reduce weight, avoid further muscle wastage and the hard wiring of pain responses. Joints still require some movement to maintain their range of motion and help pump nutrients through the cartilage. A once monthly tablet is now available for dogs requiring constant pain relief and is generally well tolerated. For best results a combination of joint protectives, analgesics and weight loss treatments may be recommended. Treatment is most effective when started at the first sign of problems or pre-emptively for those dogs at special risk. Very few dogs and cats after nine years of age won’t have a few joint issues but there is no need for them to suffer in silence.

Coaching For Life
with Dr Kate Lemerle PhD MAPS Dr Kate Lemerle has over 25 years experience in the health industry and is a Coaching Psychologist with Chrysalis Wellness Services
For many, the resolutions made with such commitment and enthusiasm at the start of the year are fading and old habits have returned. As Life Coaches, we typically find February to be the month when there’s a lot of re-thinking as to why we made those resolutions, which may now be considered ridiculously optimistic. However, before you give up on those commitments altogether, take a few minutes to pause in your day and review why dedicating yourself to making significant life changes is so important. People commit to change for two main reasons – we want to be happier, and we want our lives to be meaningful. Being happy, and having a sense of purpose and meaning, are universal human drivers – regardless of where or when you’re born, every one of us strives to be happy and find some meaning in the things we do and the experiences we have. Nature has hard-wired us for happiness for a number of reasons that are becoming increasingly evident as the sophistication and depth of our understanding of the brain grows. Happiness is essential for survival - the immune cells of people who report being happy are stronger than those who are not, but surprisingly the immune cells of those who report leading meaningful lives are even stronger than those who are happy but without clear life purpose. Research has uncovered other differences between happiness and meaning. Happy people are significantly more aware of and engaged in the present moment, whereas people with a strong sense of meaning more frequently look for links between past, present, and future. People derive meaningfulness (but not necessarily happiness) from helping others, being a giver, whereas people derive happiness (but not necessarily meaningfulness) from being a taker. So science is now giving us some good pointers about how to achieve lasting happiness, and build purpose and meaning into our lives. It is well established that empathy, compassion, and happiness are skills that can be cultivated through deliberate decisions and actions, not just fleeting emotions. For example, one study that examined data of more than 200,000 people from 136 countries found that donating to charity in the past month boosts happiness “in most individual countries and all major regions of the world,” cutting across cultures and levels of economic well-being, and not even altered by levels of affluence or poverty. Humans feel good when they give to others. Other studies have conclusively shown that the daily practice of mindfulness - the moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings - improves our individual health and also makes us more compassionate toward others. In addition, people who practice mindfulness, even if only for a few minutes every day, show noticeable changes in brain activity, including in networks linked to emotional awareness. And emotional awareness – that is, understanding and valuing our own feelings as well as those of the people around us – is one of the most powerful protective factors against many mental health problems such as depression. The take-home message is that striving to achieve goals that have personal meaning for you inevitably helps you stay healthy, but also boosts happiness, and this can be enhanced by giving to others in simple ways such as encouraging a friend to also stay on track, which then comes back to you with improved motivation.
