Please give a few hours to help a million people Red Shield Appeal Doorknock Weekend 24 – 25 May The Salvation Army is asking members of the public to give a few hours to help collect for the annual Red Shield Appeal Doorknock Weekend which will take place on the weekend of 24-25 May. Salvation Army spokesperson, Major Bruce Harmer, says it is only through the generosity of the Australian people that The Salvation Army is able to continue to support people in need. “By giving a few hours of your time on the Red Shield Appeal Doorknock weekend, you will be helping us to help over one million people in need,” Major Harmer said. The national goal for the Red Shield Appeal Doorknock this year is $10 million, which forms part of The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal which aims to raise $80 million across Australia. “Without the generous support of Australians in every suburb and town across the country, The Salvation Army could not reach this goal...the funds of which go directly to support Salvation Army programs and social services.” With Australia going through a major economic transition and many individuals and families facing an uncertain future, The Salvation Army expects many more people will be in need of basic assistance with issues such as food stress. “Many people who have been well off in the past are now genuinely worried about their future,” Major Harmer said. “The Salvation Army is in a unique position to assist individuals and families who fall on hard times, whether it be with their immediate needs such as food assistance through to working with people over the longer term with financial counselling; drug, alcohol and gambling rehabilitation services; as well as skills development and job placement just to name a few.” To join with Centenary Salvation Army church and volunteer, contact Derek Whitehouse on 0409 354 683 or 3279 2850. Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s a good time to reflect on mothering and the role of mothers in our society and communities. Sadly, for many the relationship with their mother is not an easy or pleasant one. I’ve been fortunate to have had a steady, loving, supportive relationship with mine, and because of this, my heart breaks for those who don’t. I was chatting about mothers with some friends the other day, and out of the conversation came a recognition for the need for mothering types of relationships, for all of us but more so if our relationship with our mother is not the best. In the street I spent my teenage years, I had a few mothers. They were women who offered a different perspective than my own mother, and who were a little removed emotionally from me. Because they weren’t as emotionally invested in me as my own mother, they could perhaps see things from another angle and give unique insight. I will always be thankful for those who took an interest in me as a growing young woman and for the time they spent listening to me and my teenage angst, most of which was unwarranted, mind you! During the conversation with my friends, I said the words “we need to embrace universal motherhood”. We all chuckled at the slightly ‘hippy’ turn of phrase but it’s true, we need to be ‘mothering’ one another. Let’s get a definition of what it means to ‘mother’ someone. According to my trusty dictionary it means to look after, care for, take care of, nurse, protect, tend, raise, rear, pamper, coddle, cosset, fuss over. So, really, mothering shouldn’t just be left to mothers, or even women. Mothering should be what we all do for everyone. As adults, we don’t need ‘mothering’ all the time but there are times we need to be looked after, taken care of, or fussed over. In our friendships, we need to be looking for opportunities to show care and nurture our friends. Mothering others means we give them attention, we listen, we take note of when they need some extra care and pampering. It was interesting to note that the antonym for ‘mothering’ is neglect. And when you think about it, when we neglect something, we give it no attention at all, no care or interest. This Mother’s Day, why not take some time to appreciate those ‘mothers’ who fill the need in your life for that little bit of TLC. And while you’re appreciating them, take a look around for those people in your life who might need some mothering themselves, after all, we do need to ‘embrace universal motherhood’!

Hello Readers There has been considerable conversation amongst the community about the shift of Year 7 into secondary school from the commencement of 2015. A number of families I have spoken to are concerned that the secondary environment is not appropriate for children in Year 7 who are only 11 or 12 years old. Parents do not want to see their children lost amongst large numbers of older students. Where schools do not have effective programs in place for a smooth transition for students into secondary, parents have every right to express their concern.

A place for INNOVATION St John’s is a collaborative, online, interconnected learning community. Our teachers motivate their students to use new technologies, to source real time information and to create and publish their work. They are being well prepared for a rapidly changing future.

For more information email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au or phone 07 3372 0176

Queensland is one of the last states to move Year 7 into the secondary environment and the shift will bring the schooling structure in our state into line with New South Wales and Victoria that have educated Year 7 students within the high school setting for decades. St John’s Anglican College is somewhat unique in Queensland in that we have always had Year 7 within the secondary environment and was established with programs in place in Upper Primary and in Middle School to ensure a smooth and successful transition. St John’s students are guided towards working with greater independence while still in primary classes. They are able to access lessons and information from class websites set up by their teachers and can review their lessons and assessment tasks via remote means. Many of their learning activities utilise Web 2.0 tools and students can save their digital creations on the class website, leave comments, questions and blogs and therefore interact with their learning community online as well as face to face. The teachers also regularly utilise a strategy called ‘the flipped classroom’ which describes a reversal of traditional teaching methods. Instead of the teacher providing the students with all the content information they require and then setting homework based on that information, the Upper primary teachers flip this model and set homework that requires students to read information and watch videos from the class website. Valuable class time is then used for higher order thinking and problem solving. Students and their teachers are able to engage in deep discussions, analysing and evaluating the information they have gained. This ‘flipped’ model shifts the focus from passive to active learning, really engages the students and prepares them for more advanced learning experiences. St John’s next Open Day for Kindergarten to Year 12 is Saturday, 3 May 9 am to 12 noon. It would be wonderful to welcome you to the College so that you can learn more about our Year 7 transition program. Take the dog for a walk this month

Did you know that by just walking your dog you could help thousands of dogs? The RSPCA Million Paws Walk, on Sunday May 18, is your chance to help stop animal cruelty, and improve the lives of dogs like Cooper, a two-year-old Beagle-cross who is also one of the 2014 Million Paws Walk ‘hero dogs’. A call to the RSPCA from a concerned member of the public helped save the life of Cooper (pictured below), who was slowly being strangled by a nylon rope caught dangerously around his throat. The team at the RSPCA Animal Hospital treated Cooper’s horrific wound. The nylon rope had been around Cooper’s neck for so long that it was no longer visible, having become embedded up to 2.5cm deep in his skin folds. The rope had also become embedded in the underlying tissue and had been cutting into Cooper’s flesh so deeply and for such a long time that some of his flesh had died and begun to rot. The veterinary team treated Cooper’s wounds and after some rest and recuperation, he made a full recovery and was adopted three months after being rescued. Cooper is just one of over 18,000 dogs that pass through RSPCA shelters in Queensland every year. The Million Paws Walk is dedicated to raising much-needed funds to help these dogs get their second chance in life. All the money raised by walking and fundraising enables the RSPCA to continue their critical work in caring for dogs that have been lost, surrendered, abandoned or seized by RSPCA Inspectors. “The RSPCA’s annual operating costs are $39 million in Queensland and we receive less than one percent of that figure in Government funding. So every cent raised helps,” said RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty. “The funds raised through Million Paws Walk also help fund education in the hope of preventing cruelty and neglect from being inflicted on dogs like Cooper. Not all cruelty is intentional. Sometimes it is simply ignorance and that’s why our Inspectors’ primary is often education. We need Receivepurpose a to make all people understand that animals suffer just like us. They feel pain, they get hungry and FREE they also get lonely. If we can spread this message, to young people in particular, then hopefully DELUXE CAR WAH they will learn empathy. By being kind to animals they will learn to show compassion and sensitivity to humans as well,” said with and anymake service Mr Beatty. Advice on the House

8. Offers are received, negotiations are conducted, and once the final price and terms are agreed, the contract is dated. 9. The buyer pays the deposit and the contract is emailled to all parties. 10. You appoint a solicitor to handle the conveyance for you. 11. Generally we do not show new buyers through the property once it is ‘under contract’; but the property remains ‘For Sale’ in all marketing avenues (we record their details so we can get back to them if necessary). 12. The buyers arrange, at their expense, the building and pest inspections and submit their application for finance, and if their bank requires a valuation then this will be done. 13. If you have a mortgage on the property, you will need to liaise with your bank well before settlement day. 14. Once the contract is unconditional, we change the internet listing to ‘under contract’ and the SOLD sign goes up. This is the time to start packing (or to give the tenants notice to leave). 15. Settlement usually occurs between 30 and 60 days from the contract date – this is the day that you get the money and the buyer gets the keys! This is just an overview of the process; there are a lot of details that haven’t been mentioned here. If you would like to discuss the sale process then I would be delighted to hear from you.

Firstly, thank you to everyone who welcomed me to the Centenary News! It was lovely to have my article in the April edition acknowledged by so many of my past clients, and I hope that future editions will be of interest to potential new clients. This month, I thought I would discuss the process of selling a property – this is something that most people don’t do very often – one of my most recent sales was at 8 Callabonna Street in Westlake, and the owners had been there for 28 years! This is commonplace in the Centenary Suburbs, where many people are very long-term local residents. I have lived here since 1998 but am still a ‘newbie’ by some standards! Here is a step-by-step guide as to what you can expect to happen when you list your property for sale with my office: 1. The paperwork is signed. 2. If necessary, we liaise with the tenants and the managing agent. 3. Keys are securely tagged. 4. Professional photography and floor plan arranged. 5. Words for internet and advertisements are written and checked with owners. 6. Marketing and inspections (private appointments and/ or Open Houses) commence. 7. Buyers are followed up in the days after the inspections; and a weekly written report (usually by email) is sent to you.

Soccer season kicks off with Under 9’s carnival Mega Sportz Soccer Camp (MSSC) is a camp run from 30 June - 4 July for Years 4 -7. It has been running successfully for over 15 years in partnership with the Queensland Christian Soccer Association, and the Presbyterian Church of Queensland. The camp is held at Camp Moogerah and campers receive a jersey, shorts, water bottle, trophy and all-you-can-eat catering and fantastic company. Youth leaders and coaches from all over southeast Queensland join forces to create a program that contains six-a-side competitions, Futsal, skills and drills, master classes and about 300 soccer balls going this way and that way for five days. Last month, the MSSC team held the first ever Under 9 Carnival. It was run in the spirit of camp; that is that the focus is on development of skills, fun and fair play more so than the result. Teams played in fantastic spirit, with coaches allowed on the field to help with the transition of players onto the big field. St Catherine’s Soccer Club, Middle Park, provided the fields and fed participants throughout the day, and the players (12 teams from as far away as Brisbane Valley, Rosewood and Beaudesert) enjoyed playing two games each. Two players from each team were selected to play in an allstars match under lights and this game was a fantastic way to end the day. Fairy floss was also sold on the day, raising $300 for a camper from soccer camp who’s family lost everything in a fire recently. Organiser Josh Mansfield was extremely happy with the day. “It was a really fun day, and the players entertained the many spectators who came to watch. It was a great opportunity to promote soccer, and of course Mega Sportz Soccer Camp.” You can find out more about Mega Sportz Soccer Camp by liking the Facebook Page, facebook.com/megasportzsoccercamp and you can register for camp at megasportz.info, or by emailling johnm@pcq.org.au.

Centenary Suburbs Historical Society update

by Vice President Lynda Young

Exploring the past in the Centenary suburbs – part 4 Here is another historic walk, or cycle, in the suburb of Jindalee. Beginning in Mt Ommaney Drive at the eastern end looking towards the Brisbane River, you will see the old Sea Scout Troop’s concrete block building known as the landship ‘Derwent’. The troop was formed in 1965 and met at the old 17 Mile Rocks school house, now the site of Homebase. The new building was built with money raised by the boys and was officially opened on 24 March 1973 by Queensland’s Chief Scout, the Governor of Queensland, Sir Colin Hannah. The Centenary Rowing Club used the Scout’s facility from 2001 until their new building was constructed at Riverhills in 2010. Directly opposite the scout hut is Mosquito Island, referred to by that name in 1846. As the area was not yet settled it was probably named by travellers on passing boats. The mozzies must have been bad! Walking west towards the boat ramp, you can enjoy the Jindalee Boat Ramp Park, 3-68 hectares, which was declared on 30th July 1969. The Council was given the land by Centenary Estates Limited as part of the 10% park contribution of their subdivision at that time. The Jindalee Lions Club has been involved in enhancing the park since 1973. Destroyed by floods in January 2011 the first boat ramp was washed away and found at Corinda! $1.5 million dollars later, the park now sports an off-leash area for dogs, BBQs, toilet facilities, a playground on higher ground and, of course, a sturdier pontoon for boat launching. Recently, Rotary Clubs from our district have established a garden at the park’s entry. You will see a recent plaque nestling in the mulch. Standing near the playground looking across the river, you will see the opening to Moggill Creek. Up the creek towards Brookfield was a timber-felling area, and logs were rafted down Moggill Creek to the Brisbane River in the 1850s. The name, Rafting Ground Reserve, about one and a half kilometres upstream from the mouth of Moggill Creek, reminds us of the early industry. An account of the Experiment steamer’s river trip in 1846 mentions the abundance of silky oak, pine and cedar trees lining the river. It is not hard to visualize the opposite side of the river from where you are standing as it was 150 years ago, if you replace the scrub with towering trees in your imagination.

Special service to honour mothers

Remembrance S ervice

FRIDAY MAY 9TH 6.30PM

In a commitment to provide care to people who have suffered the loss of a mother, sister, aunt or daughter, Centenary Memorial Gardens will hold a Mothers Day Remembrance service on Friday May 9. Now in it’s thirteenth year, the special service is open to anyone in the community who has lost a female family member, even people who may have used a different cemetery or crematorium are welcome. This years service will include guest speaker Lisa Grosskopf. Lisa is a popular funeral celebrant who has assisted many of the families who have come to Centenary Memorial Gardens. Lisa will also be singing on the evening and presenting a photo tribute to women. “We can’t change the profound sadness a family feels at the loss of a mother but our services provide an opportunity to remember her and draw close to her in a non- threatening environment surrounded by others experiencing a similar loss,” said Peter Ship, Manager, Centenary Memorial Gardens. “Each year we try and present a service that is different but meaningful, just a casual relaxed atmosphere where people can take the time to remember their loved ones. “One year we planted 150 trees on the evening to create the Garden of Angels, another year we presented everyone with a pack of home-made cupcakes. Sometimes we hand out flowers that the family can place on their loved ones grave. “We have even been known to have spectacular fireworks displays, all as a part of honouring Mothers and celebrating their lives.” The special Mothers Day Remembrance service will be held in the Federation Chapel at Centenary Memorial Gardens on May 9 starting at 6.30pm. Guests are asked to RSVP before May 6 by calling Centenary Memorial Gardens on 3271 1222.

Finally, the truth about BACK PAIN! Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • L ower Back Pain or Stiffness • M uscle spasm or strains • B ulging lumbar discs • N umbness or soreness in your legs • S hooting hip or thigh pain • S ciatica Having back and leg pain can bring life to a standstill. You might not be able to play golf, work, pick up the grandkids or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep.

Is back pain keeping you from enjoying what you love to do?

You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced with the kids or the grandkids?

Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough anti-inflammatories, narcotics or other pain pill. But if you mask the pain, it can prevent your back from healing – maybe even damage it further (anti-inflammatories work at a cellular level preventing healing). Many of the pain medications available are quite addictive and can have devastating side effects like heart attacks and catastrophic gastric haemorrhage or kidney failure. These professional athletes have the money to hire any kind of doctor they want, yet they choose to have a chiropractor on their team. Here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic … “ Ma n ipu lation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.” - British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” - Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery This means in just a matter of days or weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, being able to pick up the grand-children or travelling again. So many people have said “... if only I’d found you sooner ...” that, for only $37 you can find out whether this amazing treatment can help.

Music at the Hub

Music at the Hub is a quality, casual, relaxed ‘night out’ to enjoy talented musicians and performers from Brisbane and further afield. The genre includes styles of Folk, Blues, Jazz, easy listening and soft Rock depending on the artists. This month, residents will have two great acts to enjoy, folk duo Rebecca Wright & Donald McKay and Swing Garden. Donald McKay’s traditional and original songs from his native Scotland are beautifully complemented by Rebecca Wright’s insightful Australian originals and thoughtful selection of contemporary gems. Family band, Swing Garden, brings together soft jazz and swing, with Pete playing resonator guitar, while daughters Ashlyn and Isobelle play electric bass and Celtic harp, and ukulele respectively. Held at the Centenary Community Hub at 171 Dandenong Road, Mt Ommaney, the evening begins at 6.30pm, with performances starting at 7pm. Entry cost is $10 per person (cash only) with children under 14 free. Light meals, cheese and nibble platters, snacks, soft drinks, water and tea and coffee will be available at reasonable prices. Patrons are welcome to bring alcoholic drinks, as well as glasses. Plese note, the sale of food and soft drinks helps to keep the entry price low, so no soft drink or food are allowed to be brought in. Bookings are recommended and can be made by phoning 0499 999 772 or by sending an email to bookings@ccconnect.asn.au to secure a table.

QCWA’s update

by Christine King

It was a wonderful evening welcoming new faces to our group as we work towards forming a sub branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association in the Centenary Suburbs. The new ladies were welcomed and quickly settled into the current project of knitting a perfect square. Much fun followed with comparing the quality and size of our first knitted squares. We would be pleased to welcome other ladies to our group, whether you have recently retired and want to meet local ladies or you have moved into the area. The information for the evening covered the cultural activities and learning opportunities available through the CWA. Ladies can learn patchwork, embroidery and all things craft including knitting and crochet. Workshops and monthly get-togethers are available at a number of branches and locations in the western suburbs. Members can test their skills at cookery competitions or photography. The evening included some impromptu speaking and the ladies who were brave did an excellent job. They realised it is not so scary speaking with friends. CWA prides itself on empowering women to become public speakers, whether it be in a meeting setting or in the public domain at more formal occasions. We are proud that past Executive Officers of the Association have gone onto become local Councillors around Queensland and even becoming the Mayor. At the May meeting, we will be learning different techniques to join the knitted squares to make into rugs. So we invite you to come and meet our ladies at the Centenary Library Meeting Room on 6th May at 6.00 for 6.30p.m. Bring your knitting No. 4 needles and a ball of 8 ply. Be sure to knock loudly at the library as it is closed at that hour. Why not bring a friend! For enquiries contact christinelking@bigpond.com or noelawebb@yahoo.com.au.

Kiwanis Club of Brisbane and UNICEF partner to deliver life saving vaccinations It’s hard to believe that in this modern day and age, one baby dies from neonatal tetanus every nine minutes. That’s 60,000 innocent lives lost to this preventable disease every year. With a fatality rate of almost 100 per cent in areas lacking treatment facilities, once contracted, tetanus is almost always deadly for newborns. Through an initiative of Kiwanis, the Mothers Day Project is raising funds to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) by providing vaccinations to 61 million women in 25 countries. The Kiwanis Club of Brisbane is supporting the project by urging local community members to give. Anita Lennox, President Kiwanis Club Brisbane, says the project is life changing. “To help raise money towards the elimination of MNT, Kiwanis established the ‘Mothers Day Project’ in 2012. “The premise behind the ‘Mothers Day Project’ is to allow people to give the ‘gift of life’ on Mothers Day by purchasing a vaccination package on behalf of their mother, sister, wife or loved one. “In 2012, in its inaugural year, we raised over $7,000 by contributing through the www.mothersdayproject. com.au site. In 2014, we are aiming to raise in excess of $50,000. This will allow over 25,000 mothers and their

unborn babies to be protected from MNT.” Kiwanis, a global community based organisation that works towards positive change, is partnering with UNICEF to raise $110 million and deliver the required vaccinations to eliminate MNT from the world. More than 61 million mothers and their future babies must be immunised. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It only costs approximately $2.00 to purchase the three life changing vaccinations required to protect a mother and her future babies from this terrible disease. “It sounds like the problem is too big, but in this case it really isn’t. There is already a proven action plan in place and the results are measurable. All we need are the funds to keep going. “It can be hard to find something meaningful to give on Mothers Day. But such a small amount of money will directly save and protect another mother and her babies from this excruciating disease. “Contributors receive a letter and certificate that they can give their loved one and I think both the giver and receiver will feel a sense of pride that they have done something to help another mum and her baby who so desperately need it.”

Centenary Friendship Group provides fun and connection A new group, recently formed in our suburbs, has a clear goal in mind - to unite residents in the Centenary suburbs to get together to meet for social events. The Centenary Friendship Group evolved because of the need in our community for connection and interaction; it’s all too easy to be isolated even though surrounded by people. Centenary residents tend to be either transient or have lived here for years. And for those moving into our suburbs, the group provides an excellent opportunity to make new friends and for those who are retiring, there can be a social vacuum to fill. The group has only been active for a matter of weeks and already have five interest groups established, which include meeting in local restaurants for lunch, cinema/film group, book club and a discussion group. There is also a very active ‘bridge’ group. The lunch group meets once a month and plans to visit local restaurants. Ten people met for the first event where conversation flowed freely amongst the group who met as strangers but left as friends. The cinema group has had one outing and enjoyed each others company and having the opportunity to discuss the film. That group plans to make the outing a monthly event. People have signed up for the book group and they plan to have their first meeting in a coffee shop in Jindalee. The discussion group watched a Wayne Dyer video which had a very different meaning for each person present, leading to much interesting dialogue. The ‘bridge’ group meets every Monday evening at St Catherine’s Anglican Church, McFarlane Street. Some members are experienced players and some beginners. The group is gentle on beginners providing lots of support, friendship, fun and laughter. The Centenary Friendship group is for men and women of all ages, so everyone is welcome to join the group where you will be met with a very warm welcome. For further information please contact Ruth by sending an email to friendshipgroup@optusnet.com.au. Page 16 - May 2014 - The Centenary News

Coaching For Life

with Dr Kate Lemerle PhD MAPS Dr Kate Lemerle has over 25 years experience in the health industry and is a Coaching Psychologist with Chrysalis Wellness Services

Mothering is one of the most challenging, uplifting, frustrating, and rewarding experiences of a woman’s life. As the median age for marriage continues to creep upwards, women are typically delaying their child-bearing to between 25 to 34 years of age. A major influence has been women seeking longer education than ever before in Australia’s history, and with it a rapid rise in women’s participation in the workforce. Along with this comes greater financial security and the fringe benefits of a lifestyle to match. All these social influences mean that by the time women start their own families, many have had very little experience of babies, toddlers or young children...and for many it comes as a profound shock! Trying to balance work, family, and personal fulfilment presents a unique challenge to women today. For a large number of women, there are few role models as their own mothers are also often working, and family networks that used to provide support are more fragmented than ever before meaning that the caring for infants largely falls to the parents, often the mother. Women often comment to me that mothering is the most significant ‘job” they will ever undertake, yet there’s no training, no health and safety regulations, no annual leave, and little, if any, recognition of the health problems commonly faced by mothers. Doctors can be too quick to prescribe antidepressants or Valium, without asking about a few basic issues such as sleep habits, social support, even the disparity between their romanticized dreams of motherhood and reality. Several research studies have shown a strong link between shattered expectations of motherhood and various mental health problems like depression and OCD. Addressing wellbeing at the time women become pregnant is as important as teaching them what to expect during childbirth. After birth, giving mothers access to wellness support services has the potential to dramatically decrease medications that simply mask the real problems, and often add to them by implying that struggling mums are failing in some way. For example, a technique known as ‘job crafting’ which is used widely in the corporate sector, coaches those new to a job in the tasks, relationships, and self-motivation relevant to the job demands. Mothering, including the responsibilities of managing a household with significantly less time, lends itself well to this approach. The aim is to foster flourishing women who feel that they are in control of their lives; they feel good and function effectively, and maintain high levels of health (physical, mental and social). This is achieved by boosting self-efficacy, use of signature strengths, a raft of positive emotions such as pleasure and optimism, and they can then approach this role with the same degree of enthusiasm as they would for any new career pathway. Coaching psychology potentially offers to make a huge impact on women’s lives, with good evidence-based interventions that could dramatically reduce the statistics for many mental health problems during this stage of life.

FLY IN FOR SO ME Budgies and cockatiels as pets GRRRREAT PRICES Its easy to dismiss the humble budgie or cockatiel as ! just a “retirement home” type pet but if you are looking by Dr Scott Snellgrove BVSc (Qld)

for a pet that is intelligent, talkative, easy to care for and inexpensive to feed, what’s not to like? This beautiful Australian native is a great mimic and ever cheerful. Breeding has created colours ranging from green to yellow to blue, pastels and full white. They have personalities that recognise and become quite attached to their owners. In short, they make wonderful pets for both young and old just so long as a few simply rules are followed. Most of these relate to correct diet and husbandry but here’s a few tips to maintain a healthy little friend. Diet: An all bird seed diet is a recipe for disaster. It provides fat, oil and calories but little else. Not enough protein, not enough minerals like iodine or calcium and not enough Vitamin A. This can cause liver failure or thyroid disease with half normal life expectancy. A quality crumble pellet mix such as Vetapharm mix however makes a far better “base” diet to which you can add selected fruits, vegetables, bean sprouts, dandelions and thistles. Frozen vege mixes are also good. Grit: A cuttlefish or hanging calcium/iodine supplemented type block bell is useful for providing minerals as well as grit to help digestion and will help keep the beak groomed. More calcium is required during egg laying. Water: Budgies and cockatiels are dry climate dwellers so can survive long periods without water but water provided should be clean, changed regularly and placed in a higher area where the bird will not defecate. Cage: Bigger is better. Birds need to exercise wings and minds and the typical tiny budgie cage is only really suitable as a night sleep area. A larger day cage is better or at least have periods where the bird can fly free. A larger cage can be easily decorated with Bottle Brush or Grevillea twigs and flowers. This gives the bird somewhere to perch, something to play with, and security to hide when resting. Birds are intelligent and providing some novelty and exercise is important to reduce boredom and stress behaviours. Fresh air is fine but try to avoid draughty areas or include a nesting box since the caged bird cannot escape if becoming chilled. Lastly, try to maintain a fairly normal day length of dusk till dawn by using a blackout cover. Parasites: Birds can be wormed twice yearly with a proprietary liquid. I prefer to dose directly into beak or crop tube as budgies can survive long periods without water so may decline water which is “medicated”. Egg binding: Egg laying is often triggered by recent rain. Binding or dystocia can occur in female birds and may be linked to inadequate dietary calcium, obesity, hypothermia and low humidity. If the bird appears to be straining or a swelling occurs near the vent, try gently warming and placing the bird in a more humid area first but if in doubt seek veterinary advice as it can be life threatening. We can provide information sheets with friendly professional advice on correctly feeding and caring for birds and stock a range of quality suitable diets and medications...just don’t ask us where the bird seed is!

Locals buy cupcakes to support melanoma research Local residents got behind the recent cupcake drive in support of Melanoma Institute Australia held at Jindalee Home last month. The national fundraising event was joint venture between BB Retail Capital group of Homemaker Centres and Melanoma Institute Australia and was held at 11 BBRC centres across Australia. The initiative aimed to increase awareness of melanoma and raise much needed funds for early detection programs. General Manager for Melanoma Institute Australia, Nicola Ware, said, “Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world and is often referred to as ‘Australia’s cancer,’ with more than 12,500 new cases diagnosed each year and the most common cancer in young Australians aged 15–39 years. “Over 90% of melanomas can be cured, if detected and treated early enough and this campaign is about raising the much needed funds to expand the reach of our message into the community about the importance of early detection, sun safety and annual skin checks.” Jindalee Home Centre Manager Ian Ferguson was excited to partner with Melanoma Institute Australia. “Seeing our customers come down and support the cause by buying a cupcake and decorating it was great. Residents were amazing with their generous support with this fundraising event, raising close to $1,500. That’s a lot of cupcakes! “It was also pleasing to see our retailers at Jindalee Home jumping on board with their support by buying cupcakes. It was a great event that really drew the community together.”

Mother’s Day 11 May Mother’s Day is just two weekends away and it is a great opportunity for families to come together to recognise the significant contribution mothers make to our lives. There will be plenty of activity in the local parks and recreational areas as well as local community groups hosting events to raise money for charitable organisations. Look out for details of Mother’s Day Stalls and other activities leading up to Sunday 11 May in school newsletters and around your community. National Reconciliation Week - Let’s Walk the Talk May 27 – June 3 National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated across Australia to commemorate two significant milestones in Australian history. May 27th marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum which saw over 90% of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the national census. June 3rd marks the anniversary of the 1992 High Court Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a special relationship to the land that existed prior to colonalisation and still exists today. The decision marked the way for land rights called Native Titles. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared history, culture and achievements. It is easy for schools and community groups to get involved by attending or hosting an event providing an opportunity for everyone to ‘walk the talk’. For more information about events in your local area or to register your own event, please visit: www.reconciliation.org.au.
