National Seniors

Do you have Tuesday morning, May 5th blank in your diary? Then I have a suggestion. Write down Jindalee Bowls Club, 9.30am where you will meet around 100 National Seniors Members waiting for their morning tea, then a short meeting followed by an entertainer.

Alan Worthington, our Guest Speaker last month, who spoke on his trip through the Darling River Run, Maralinga and the Simpson Desert was very interesting, and his slides were terrific. Our ‘Bring and Buy’ sale displayed many ‘treasures’ which we look forward to.

Our activities include Steady Steps each Monday – 9am start at Centenary Uniting Church Hall, Middle Park.

Everyone is welcome. We have plays, concerts, morning teas, evening dinners and trivia nights to attend. We are also open to suggestions on other activities that we can join in.

The ever popular MahJong game is held at Mt Ommaney Library on 7th and 14th of May starting at 9am until noon. We have Coach and Explorer trips. This month, our coach trip is to a Robotic Dairy out on the Scenic Rim where we can see the cows being milked the modern way. No longer does the farmer have to round up the cows and get them milked by hand. This is all done robotically.

Our Explorer trip in April was to the State Library where we had a look at the ANZAC display before taking the bus into City Hall Museum to see the ‘Golden Age of Hollywood display’ there. Using our GO Card and the bus/train system teaches us how to get around when we’re no longer able to drive. We can still get to wherever we need to go.

We are also in the process of organising a short holiday at Yeppoon in August for our Members. As you can see, we are a very active branch of National Seniors Australia If you belong to National Seniors, this is for you!

Our annual Zone 101 Conference, of which Centenary is one of the three Clubs hosting it, will be held on 28th May at Lions Soccer Club Pine Road, Richlands, starting at 9am. Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Just recently, I received a lovely yellow ticket from a man in blue on the side of the road. It’s my second speeding ticket in the 25 years I’ve had my licence, which is not bad in the grand scheme of things. I’ll leave it to you to decide if I’m a great driver or just very lucky.

As I sat there after handing him my licence, I felt the car rock with each car that went past. Judging by the amount the car moved, I think I could safely say that not many others knew or chose to abide by the fact that it was, indeed, a 60km/h zone. I would not be the only one to go home with a yellow piece of paper that day, I suspect!

On the way home, I thought about how many cars seemed to be speeding past me and I started to get angry.

Why weren’t all of them getting a ticket? Out of all the cars going over the speed limit on that road that day, only a small percentage would pay for it. And the fact that I was one of them didn’t sit well.

I started to feel that it was so unfair that I now had a fine and loss of demerit points, while others were going to get away with it. And as I drove home, I noticed every slightest traffic infringement - evidence that it wasn’t just me who did the wrong thing, so why could they get away with it while I got caught!?

We have a tendency to do this throughout life, don’t we? We base our behaviour more on those around us than on the actual standards for living. We might treat our spouse horribly but justify it by saying, well, at least I’m not having an affair or beating them. We are impatient and yell at our kids but tell ourselves that at least we’re providing food and clothing for them. We clock off work early but fill out our time sheet to reflect otherwise and defend it by comparing ourselves to the workmate who steals company stationary.

We can’t rationalise or excuse our behaviour by comparing it to the lowest denominator. How many of us have said to a teenager “Just because everyone is doing it, doesn’t mean it’s right.”? Yet, so often, we think things are okay for the very reason that ‘everyone is doing it’.

The fact of the matter is that I received a speeding ticket because I was speeding. End of story. The fact that people speed every day and don’t get caught has nothing to do with it.

We must decide for ourselves what our behaviour and actions will be and live accordingly, rather than looking at what everyone else is doing and lowering our standards to be the same or even just slightly better.

Our behaviour is our responsibility, no-one else’s; just as we can’t control other people’s behaviour, only they can.

I think we need to mind our own business a bit more, in the right way. If we concentrate on what we know to be right and good, it’s much easier to maintain the level of living that we desire, instead of being swayed by what we see others doing.

Kiwanis join with local RSL to prepare for ANZAC Day Kiwanis Club of Brisbane assisted with the clean up of Mount Ommaney Memorial Gardens in preparation for the recent ANZAC Day Centenary celebrations, as part of global service initiative.

Kiwanis members scrubbed, painted and tidied the Memorial Gardens, situated on the corner of Arrabri Avenue and Dandenong Road, as part of Kiwanis One Day, a global day of service that unites the entire Kiwanis family.

The Kiwanis Club of Brisbane joined thousands of other Kiwanis-family clubs around the world, with Kiwanis International estimating that Kiwanis One Day contributed nearly one million service hours around the world in just one day.

“We were proud to join our fellow Kiwanis-family members around the globe to participate in Kiwanis One Day,” said Mal Lancaster, President of the Brisbane Club. “The energy, commitment and camaraderie that surrounded this single day made the experience of hands-on service even more gratifying for our members as they made an immediate, measurable impact on the Centenary Suburbs community.”

Kiwanis One Day was designated by Kiwanis International to unite all 630,000 youth and adult members from different parts of the Kiwanis family together in service. The 2015 Kiwanis One Day takes on extra meaning as Kiwanis celebrates its 100th Anniversary. Kiwanis started in 1915 as a business professionals club in Detroit, Michigan, USA, but quickly adopted serving the community as its focus.

Fete promises to be fun for all Our Lady of the Sacred Heart will be holding their biennial fete on Sunday 24 May from 10am till 3pm on the school grounds located at 115 Darra Station Road, Darra.

Entry to the fete is free, with multi ride passes available for $30 for the day. Rides include the Super Sizzler, Aquatic Adventure Castle (jumping castle), the Combo Castle for small and big kids, the Tea Cup ride, Giant Obstacle Course and Laser Skirmish.

Popular food stalls ranging from Dutch donuts, Australian BBQ Asian food, Samoan food, American BBQ, Devonshire tea will be available to purchase from. There will also be side show alley filled with many different games, balloons, face painting, and crazy hair stalls.

A craft stall filled with heaps of craft items made by the talented parents and students of the school, as well as a trash and treasure stall and a book stall. There are fantastic prizes up for grabs with a mega raffle as well as a 100 wheel, a wheelbarrow filled with alcohol, a money tree and a cent auction, all adding to the fun on the day.

All proceeds from the fete will go towards improving the grounds for current and future students. Enquiries can be directed to the school by calling 3375 4519.

Rotary fun run caters to the whole family The seventh Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary Fun Run will be held on 24 May at the University of Queensland, St Lucia. This is a fantastic family event, with entry costs kept purposely low to encourage families to enter everyone, all the kids, grandma and grandpa, babies in a stroller and even the family dog. It’s even cheaper if you’re a team/family of four or more.

The course starts at the UQ Athletics Stadium and is then a shady track following the river then back to the stadium. The 5km walkers and runners finish after one lap, while the 10km runners go around twice.

For the second year, a Kids 1km Dash will be held. This event proved popular last year where kids got to run in a race of their own, however, mum’s or dad’s are welcome to keep them company on the track if they wish.

There are trophies for the category winners and a random draw at the prize giving for the competitors who are present.

For the serious runners, there is plenty of competition. Last year’s 10km men’s race was won in under 35 minutes and the women’s in 37 minutes. The 5km men’s was won in under 18 minutes and the women’s just over 19 minutes.

As this is a Rotary event, funds raised on the day will go to charity.

The two major beneficiaries this year are the Kim Walters Choice Program and BeefBank.

The Choices program run by the Wesley Hospital supports those experiencing a cancer diagnosis and their families in a multi-disciplinary holistic environment.

BeefBank is a charity that provides fresh protein meals to the people in need in south east Queensland. Operating with the Foodbank distribution network, Beefbank provides protein meals to over 500 people per week.

Members of the daytime book club enjoy a meal out together.

If you enjoy reading crime stories like a good ‘whodunit’, you may like to join the Crime & Mystery Book Club which meets at the Mount Ommaney Library each month. The members are currently all women, mostly retired, who meet to discuss the book selected for the month. The group has been meeting for more than 10 years and the ladies enjoy discussing the book of the month and talking about any other topic as well.

Being part of this group allows members to read books they may not have otherwise read so it is an opportunity to widen your reading sphere. When discussing the book, there will be a variety of opinions. The best discussions ensue when there are people who love it or hate it. Of course, there is also the social aspect where members can have a cuppa and talk about what’s happening in the world.

Members have some favourite authors such as James Lee Burke, Henning Mankel, Michael Connelly, Jo Nesbo and John Grisham. A good crime book keeps the reader guessing, is suspenseful, is well-developed with believable characters, a credible story, good writing, and a twist at the end.

The Club meets at 1.00pm on the first Wednesday of the month at the Mount Ommaney Library. The book for May is The Soul of Discretion by Susan Hill and for June it is The Burning Room by Michael Connelly. All enquiries can be sent to mulligan53@iinet.net.au.

The good news for those interested but unable to attend during the day, is that an evening club will launch on Thursday 7 May from 6.30-8.30m at the Girl Guides Hut, MacFarlane St, Middle Park (between the school and church) and will meet the first Thursday of each month.

Free information session about changes to aged care From July 2015, access to Government subsidised aged care services will be changing in line with the aged care reforms.

Jubilee Community Care at Indooroopilly is getting ready for the changes.

Executive Manager, Shaun Riley said “The way people can access Government subsidised aged care services in the future will be changing significantly.� “To understand the changes ahead Jubilee Community Care is running a free information session in May to help older people and their families.�

As a not-for-profit community organisation, Jubilee Community Care is able to assist older people to remain living at home with subsidised and private services including shopping, transport, personal care, gardening, hairdressing, nursing services, and activities and outings. “We want to be sure that older people who may want support services in the future have a good understanding of what’s happening. We are also keen to engage with people living in the Centenary Suburbs to find out how well they are able to access services. We are more than happy to extend our service delivery to Jindalee and surrounding suburbs if the need is there.�

Jamboree Heights SS fete on in June Jamboree Heights State School will be hosting their biennial fete on Sunday 7 June from 9am – 3pm.

The perfect way to keep the kids happy over the Queens Birthday long weekend, the fete will include many attractions such as rides, a petting zoo, an interactive craft stall and side show alley.

Celebrating 40 years on from the original fete which occurred just a year after the school was established in 1974, this years fete will focus on the schools history and community connections.

As well as all the family favourites like fairy floss, face painting, cake stall etc, there will be a historical display for all the history buffs.

Testament to the great community connections, the fete is being sponsored by many local businesses.

Side show alley will include a full sized bowling alley donated for the day by AMF Richlands; the second hand stall is sponsored by Storage Choice, Sumner Park; Remax Jindalee is the platinum sponsor, providing the cafe, chairs and tables and the stage. Matthew Bourke and the BCC are the gold sponsors with Jindalee Newsagency, Be Beautiful, ABSA, Bernie Ripoll MP and Tayna Smith MP all sponsoring to a Bronze level.

The day will also feature a talent competition, holiday raffles, cent auction and a silent art auction. New to Australia? Learn conversational English locally If you or someone you know is new to Australia and would like to learn more conversational English, Westside Church of Christ runs Guided English Conversations sessions during May and June.

Last term’s conversations sessions were highly successful with participants from China, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam taking part.

Guided English Conversations has been designed to assist people with their spoken English. The emphasis is on conversation which occurs in small groups of three to five people and is guided by a topic, for example, public holidays in Australia. Each topic has a series of related pictures and questions for discussions. There are six topics in each series, which all relate to an aspect of Australian life. Each topic includes a section where the Christian perspective is shared and discussed. At the end of the series participants enjoy a Celebration BBQ and Certificate Presentation.

This term the sessions will begin on Tuesday 5 May with the last being on Tuesday 9 June. Two sessions are provided each week, Tuesday mornings at 9.30am and Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm and are held in a house on the grounds of Westside Church of Christ, 11 Intrepid Street, Jamboree Heights. There is also a time for refreshments where participants can mix and mingle and begin to establish friendships; participants are asked to contribute $2 per session is to cover tea, coffee and biscuits.

St John’s students had the opportunity to develop their winning entry (an environmentally friendly insect deterrent to protect crops) with leading engineers, scientists and business leaders.

Students at St John’s were provided with many opportunities to take part in ANZAC Day Services and activities as the nation paused this year to celebrate 100 years since the ill-fated Gallipoli landing in 1915. Our community takes seriously our commitment to empower all our students to be people of influence throughout their lives and on significant occasions such as this, fine role models held in high esteem in public life are there before our children at all stages of their St John’s educational journey. Students actively participated in cadets, marches and services in both city and local areas in addition to the services held at both primary and secondary campuses prior to the day. At these school services members of our own College community who have served are honoured, providing the opportunity for strong and supportive bonds to form within the community.

While many schools have been quiet places during the past holiday break it was business as usual for St John’s students who, in addition to our vacation care programs, were attending sport clinics, dance camp, strings workshops and the Duke of Edinburgh Camp each in their own way providing them with greater opportunities to develop their confidence and to be personally empowered.

Again St John’s highlighted its continuing success as a top destination for STEM students when, in partnership with Queensland University of Technology, we welcomed over 90 high achieving Year 10 and 11 students from nearby schools to the 2015 STEM FORUM. QUT student ambassadors, under the direction of the QUT STIMulate Coordinator, Mr Ian Lightbody conducted interactive workshops in which teams of students were stimulated with construction and electronics challenges.

Guest Speaker, Mr Peter Nikoloff, Executive Director of Nova Systems, spoke about the amazing opportunities for Science and Engineering graduates in the Defence Industry in Australia.

Mr Nikoloff and his team set up an interactive display featuring the latest in Virtual Reality technology simulating flying an aircraft.

Dog washing: the why’s, when’s and how’s.

Clients frequently ask questions regarding how often they should wash their dog, which shampoo they should use, and even, how to actually wash their dog.The simple answer is - it all depends!

The first question is why are you washing the dog. Does it have an existing skin condition or has it just rolled in something smelly ? Is it an active outdoor short coat type dog or a small fluffy inside dog, for which doggy odours may become a higher priority.

There are some quite important differences between human skin and dog skin and hence between a good purpose made dog shampoo and many of the cosmetic human ones which have been perfumed then re-branded and marketed as a ‘pet shampoo’.

Surprisingly, dog skin is actually thinner and more sensitive than human skin with a neutral pH and is easily prone to irritation and inflammation. This is often most apparent in the relatively unprotected belly areas of the groin or armpit which are closest to the ground and garden plants. Canine thin skins are also able to directly absorb allergens from grass, weeds, fleas and insect saliva more easily. Many pets then develop ‘atopy’ or ‘hay fever’.

Wet weather tends to flare dermatitis as grasses and irritant plants grow more rapidly and their pollen or sap becomes more soluble. This is easily wiped onto the skin especially of those low slung and short legged little dogs. Throw in some itching, licking and maybe chewing due to flea irritation and you soon disrupt the healthy barrier .A recipe for skin and ear infection plus the offensive doggy odour!

Here then are our recommendation for washing dogs and good skin care: • For normal washing and cleaning use a pH neutral, non soap based, sulphate-free moisturising shampoo formulated for dog skin. These help supplement and replace the skin barrier and can be used every day though weekly to fortnightly should suffice unless the dog is dirty.

• For dogs with existing allergy dermatitis and/or concurrent bacterial or yeast infections,wash twice weekly with an antimicrobial shampoo as an ongoing preventative.

• Maintain excellent flea control with one of the new once monthly oral flea tablets.These give virtually 100% control for a full 30 days.Flea shampoos are hopeless and will not maintain adequate ongoing protection against reinfection.

• For itchy/allergic dogs, topical fatty acid medications which help supplement skin barrier layers can help.

• Dogs with problems due to skin infections,allergies or parasites may require antimicrobial or anti allergy drugs and correct diagnosis.

The vet may need to take a sample from the skin to check. This is fast, simple and painless. Many dogs will also have ear problems as the ear is part of the skin too.

• Feed a good non-cereal based diet which is high in omega 3 fats. Dogs with skin problems related to any specific food intolerances may need a special formula or diet test.

• Hydrobathing does help remove deeper dirt and scurf but be careful that soap products being used are not human based and perfumed type products and that any warm water recirculated is clean from bacteria when in multi use. At home a deeper laundry tub or shower recess can be used but gently condition pups from an earlier age to avoid the endurance test later on!

Centenary of ANZAC Poppy Project Our local community embraced this project by the Centenary Suburbs Historical Society with enthusiasm when it began in September 2014.

With the support of Cr Matthew Bourke, Jamboree Ward, permission was gained from the Centenary Suburbs RSL subbranch to locate the large ‘C’ for Centenary shaped structure within the Centenary War Memorial Gardens on 25th April for the ANZAC Day ceremony.

Local community members came forward to knit, crochet or construct the 1500 fabric poppies that were needed to cover the wire structure which was built by the Men’s Shed 100 members.

Research was undertaken to identify the soldiers who enlisted from this district to go to war. Five young men from three families were identified: Herbert Sorensen, aged 20; William Sorensen, aged 18; Robert ‘Leslie’ Sinnamon, aged 17; Alexander Crookston, aged 25; and Douglas Crookston, aged 23. Leslie Sinnamon was killed on 29th August, 1916 at the Somme, France, while the other young men, although wounded during battle, returned home to live long and fruitful lives.

Five poppies were dedicated on behalf of the community to these brave local men. Another poppy represents a poppy taken to Gallipoli by a resident on behalf of the Centenary District residents. Two purple poppies were also attached to recognise all the animals lost including the 136,000 horses that were sent from Australia with only one returning.

Members of the public were invited to visit the Jamboree Ward office during the four weeks prior to ANZAC Day to dedicate a poppy for a gold coin donation with all monies going to the RSL and Legacy. The Poppy covered ‘C’ was displayed at the ceremony and is now located at the Mt Ommaney Library, along with posters telling our local heroes story, for the month of May. It has been great to be out and about across the Mount Ommaney electorate this month at local P&C AGMs, community group meeting and events and school leader induction ceremonies.

What it has shown is the sheer amount of passion and local involvement we have in our community. Be it at the Centenary State High AGM through to local events like the 4074 Community and Beyond Family Fun Day, our community is stronger because of the people in it.

Recent stories like the local Mount Ommaney police and neighbours coming together to renovate terminal pancreatic cancer patient Anthony Doran’s Mount Ommaney home, personify our local community’s spirit. It is this spirit that is important to our community, and is on display every day in our many community groups, schools and other organisations.

Our local community can always be stronger, and I often hear from people that they didn’t know that various community groups existed in our local community. That’s why each month in this column, I will be highlighting a local group that residents can get involved with and help give back to our community.

The first group will be Men’s Shed 100 Inc - Centenary and you can read more about them below.

Men’s Shed 100 aims to provide workshop and socialising facilities to serve men in the Centenary and surrounding suburbs of South West Brisbane - with various venues where local men can spend time and be socially active, form new friendships, chat to mates, and share skills and experience.

A major objective is to advance the well-being and health of our menfolk and to encourage social inclusion within the local community.

Next meeting date and time: Weekly shed meets - Jindalee Golf Club at the old Machinery Shed, Monday and Tuesday mornings from 8am.

Monthly meetings - held third Wednesday 7.30pm at Centenary Community Hub, Dandenong Rd, Mt Ommaney.

Jindalee Probus Club The Probus Club of Jindalee meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Jindalee Golf Club at 10.00am. The date is 12 May. Members start the morning with a cuppa then the meeting follows and will conclude with a guest speaker. A light lunch is available for anyone who wishes to stay longer. Probus Club of Centenary Suburbs The club meets at the Jindalee Bowls Club on the fourth Tuesday of each month with morning tea at 10 am. A guest speaker delivers a presentation on an interesting topic and a light lunch is then served.

Centenary Evening VIEW Club ‘Mothers’ will be the theme of Centenary Evening VIEW Club’s dinner meeting on Monday 11 May, the day after Mother’s Day. Meetings are held at Mt Ommaney Hotel/Apartments 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm, cost is $35 and bookings are essential.

The guest speaker will be Lynn Atkinson from ‘Giving Grannies’ a charitable organisation that distributes parcels of goodies and baby products to disadvantaged new mothers.

There will be a bring and buy stall on the night and profits from this will go to The Smith Family Learning for Life program which helps with the education of disadvantaged Australian children.

Centenary Evening VIEW Club supports five children through this program. Chapel Hill VIEW Club Chapel Hill VIEW Club meets over lunch on the first Tuesday of the month at Mount Ommaney Hotel and Apartments at 10.45am for 11.30am. Chapel VIEW Club has many special events to look forward to throughout the year. These include outings, bridge, bus trips, theatre, movies, fashion parades, choir and our book and bring and buy table at our luncheons. During the year there are many themed luncheons including International Women’s Day, Easter, Anzac Day, Mother’s Day, August Birthday, Melbourne Cup and Christmas, plus interesting guest speakers. Members would love to see new faces in 2015 and extend a warm invitation to ladies living in the local area to join them and experience the wonderful friendship of VIEW Club.

Chapel Hill VIEW Club supports the Smith Family “Learning for Life” program which is a non profit organisation committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and learning support.
