Current world issues have us all feeling a little off kilter, I think. It feels a little like you couldn’t throw a dart at a map of the world without landing on a country that is in the middle of a serious crisis. ‘Around the world, a baby dies every nine minutes from tetanus.’ This statement was enough to get student Community Service leaders from St Peters Lutheran College Indooroopilly involved in a world wide life saving project. The Kiwanis Club of Brisbane approached the Social Justice Group at the college and asked for help to raise funds in support of ‘The Eliminate Project’ where every $2 raised will save a life. During Community Justice Week, in August, students held a sausage sizzle and sold drinks which raised $1,000, paying for the vaccination of 500 women and their babies against this preventable disease. The international volunteer organization Kiwanis is seeking the complete elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus, as the life-threatening disease still prevails in many developing countries. Kiwanis, through its global campaign ‘The Eliminate Project’, has been aiming since 2010 to provide vaccinations to women in 40 countries. Kiwanis clubs are hoping to raise $110 million through fundraising events by next year. The project is being run in conjunction with UNICEF, the United Nations’ children’s fund. According to the World Health Organization, tetanus is one of the world’s leading causes of deaths among newborns due to unhygienic deliveries and umbilical cord care practices, and close to 90 percent of babies who contract the disease die from it. In response, UNICEF, together with Kiwanis, set out to eradicate the disease in 40 countries, and there are still 24 countries — including Cambodia, Ethiopia and Afghanistan — where it still exists. The disease is easily preventable when delivery and umbilical cord care practices are carried out under hygienic conditions, or by immunizing mothers with a cheap and effective tetanus vaccine. If women are offered three doses of the tetanus vaccine, which costs $2 per shot, it is estimated that during the five-year campaign, 61 million women and babies will be saved or protected from the disease.
Local bushcare group deer-proof bushland At a recent Jindalee Bushcare Group working bee, members repaired a barrier fence that had been broken by deer. Using fencing intended for a different area, group members raised the fence along the sections of track where there is a slope above it. As the bushland is dry, the deer are targeting the Bushcare area because they are hungry. With the prospect of a long dry period, this is alarming. Jindalee Bushcare Group is anxious that their work over the last 18 years will be destroyed, not to mention all the money Council has spent on plants, mulch, equipment and fencing being wasted. Members are hopeful the new fencing will stop the deer from entering the area and destroying more valuable plants. How Stella got her groove back You might recall a Whoopie Goldberg movie back in the nineties of the same name. Last month ironically we had a little dog called Stella suffering a condition called luxating patella. This essentially causes the kneecap to jump out of its groove and track to one side. The classic symptom is for the leg to ‘snatch up’ as these little dogs take a few normal steps then hop, skip and jump trying to realign their wayward kneecaps. It is, in fact, a fairly common condition among the small breeds including my very own little Tenterfield Terrier. Normally the thigh muscles work through the kneecap like a pulley to extend the leg. In a patella luxating dog, the groove of the thighbone tends to be naturally shallow and the alignment point on the shin bone offset, which tends to pull it out of track, usually toward the inside. With time, the bony ridges either side of the groove wear down and ligaments around the kneecap become stretched which magnifies the problem or triggers arthritis. Worst case scenario, as with Stella, the thigh muscles cannot engage to support the knee adequately. This puts a high load on the internal cruciate ligaments which had subsequently also ruptured. The good news, however, is that this is a highly treatable condition in most cases. Corrective surgery at an early age involves lifting and realigning the shin bones insertion, as well as creating a new deeper groove within the thighbone by performing a sulcoplasty. We also tighten the stretched joint capsule ligaments. The prognosis for most of these little dogs is excellent if performed early, that is, before onset of arthritis or secondary cruciate damage. Many dogs have problems in both knees though typically one leg will be of a worse grade than the other. Some mildly affected dogs may cope well enough with simple weight loss. Because of the likelihood of existing cartilage wear and mechanical changes issues I recommend administering protectants like pentosan and especially after surgery. The situation for large breeds and cats however isn’t quite as simple. In many cases, their knees may bear the knock on effect of deeper hip and dysplasia issues which knee surgery is unlikely to resolve. An expert opinion is advised. If you think your pet has ‘lost its groove’, seek a professional opinion to assess the extent of the problem and decide whether surgery is required. Like Stella we can hopefully get life ‘back on track’ for your pet.

The Centenary Friendship Group has only been active since the beginning of this year and has already three interest groups established which include meeting in local restaurants for lunch, cinema/film group, and a book group. There is also a very active ‘bridge’ group. Each of these groups meet once a month except for the Bridge group which meets every Monday evening. The Centenary Friendship Group is for men and women of all ages, so everyone is welcome to join the group. A time to celebrate
Year Twelve students from St John’s Anglican College developed their theme for the year around each school term. The theme for Term One was ‘Preparation’ as they readied themselves for the year of work ahead. ‘Determination’ was the aptly named theme for Term Two, with students resolving to dig a little deeper into their studies. The theme ‘Supporting Others’ summed up Term Three as students encouraged and cheered each other on to continue the hard work needed to get them all over the line. Finally, Term Four is the ‘Celebration’ term and to start the intense but very short last phase of their school life the student celebrated with their senior formal. “The students never, ever cease to amaze our school community,” said Principal Suzanne Bain. “The girls were all beautifully dressed and our boys were a dapper group of gentlemen.” The group started their wonderful night at the serene Lakes Stage in Forest Lake with family photos and from there they travelled in limos and other various means to the Sofitel in the city. The students had a wonderful night and have now started Term Four ready to take up the challenge of the next seven weeks. “Our whole community wishes every student well for their final school exams.”

An evening of fun, laughter and information was the way Rotarian and District Governor Nominee Doug St Clair opened a special gathering of community members interested in finding out more about Rotary held at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club recently. Special Radio Host Paul Campion from 97.3 FM volunteered his time to compere the evening that turned out to be a standing room only event with over 100 people attending. Campo said that the Rotary movement was very close to his heart as it did things that many of the populace said could not be done. “I would not be here unless I identified the Rotary movement as one of those fantastic groups of people that have a shared interest and purpose of helping others. For example, many citizens would not know that Rotary, with the help of the world health organisation and in conjunction with millions of dollars from the Bill Gates foundation, has led the fight to achieve the world wide eradication of Polio,” Campo said. The pens and nomination forms were out quickly taking down the names of those wanting to find out more. Four Rotary Clubs - Forest Lake, Brisbane Taylor Bridge, Brisbane Rocks Riverside, and Sumner Park Rotary Clubs were in attendance answering questions from all kinds of different people attending. Ted Crowe, President of the Brisbane Taylor Bridge Rotary Club said, “Ages at our Club range from the early 30s up to around 70 years, so I feel it gives an effective blend of youthful vitality and experience when focusing on local projects to help our local community. What we encourage is for outside people to approach the club with their own ideas, giving the Club, or Rotary as an Organisation, the chance to adopt and run with their project.” Mr Dennis Taylor, President of the Sumners Park Rotary Club, enjoys the opportunity to help the environment, with just one of the Clubs projects being to clean up local areas. “What a lot of people do not realise is that a plastic water bottle washed down a storm water drain will eventually find itself into Moreton Bay. Unfortunately, marine animals think an empty bottle rolling along the sea floor is food to eat and, if eaten, will kill the animal. We, as a community, have adopted a street or a reach on the river so when walking to work or rowing on the river we can simply stop, pick it up and prevent the killing of our marine life.” Lucinda Coulter the first female president of the Brisbane Rocks Riverside Club at Seventeen Mile Rocks said that she joined Rotary because she wanted to show her children that there are good people in the world who care and are willing to help others. “I have had a nursing background and I knew that by joining Rotary I would be able to count on like minded people to help in projects such as supplying Ipads to the Dementia Ward at the Canossa Hospital and providing food baskets to needy families at Christmas time,” Lucinda said. Bruce Pocklington president of the Forest Lake Rotary Club said that the beauty of Rotary is that prospective members will find a Rotary Club near to where they live and can attend meetings at a time that will suit them either in the morning, lunch or evening. “We have all kinds of Rotary Clubs that cater for anyone’s tastes but with the overriding benefit’s that you meet people, have fun and are involved with like minded business people,” Mr Pocklington said with a smile. November is like an early Christmas bag, full of goodies. Come and join us where we make friends and enjoy all our activities, after all, the only way to make friends is to be one! Because the Melbourne Cup is being run on the first Tuesday in November, and we have to celebrate that, our November General Meeting will now be held on 11th November, 9.30am at the Jindalee Bowls Club where we enjoy morning tea and a Guest Speaker. Because this is also Remembrance Day, we will have a minute’s silence at 11am. Our Explorer trip last month to the Botanical Gardens and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium at Mt Coot-tha was very interesting. This month is our annual ‘Mystery Coach Trip’ which we are all looking forward to. It is exciting going to an unknown destination. Our Christmas Lunch will be held at the Jindalee Golf Club this year on Tuesday, 25th November, commencing at 11am. I can guarantee a good meal there and our entertainers ‘Tim and Maggie’s Baby Boomer Band’ always provide happy music. We thank our energetic gardener, Hugh Colebatch, for organising his happy band of helpers to provide the hundreds of pot plants that sold like hot cakes at our recent Plant Sale. Included in our Christmas bag are Steady Steps exercise classes held every Monday morning from 9am at the Middle Park Uniting Church Hall – we need to slim down before we can get really serious about all the upcoming Christmas festivities. Our MahJong group meets on the first two Thursdays at the Mt Ommaney Library at 9am and our Bolivia group meets every Wednesday morning from 9am at the Jindalee Bowls Club. Also, our evening dinners, morning teas, plays and concerts give us plenty of variety in our activities each month. So, I invite you to take that single step and meet some of our many members who attend each month. It is so easy. Music at the Hub is a quality, casual, relaxed ‘night out’ to enjoy talented musicians and performers from Brisbane or touring artists. The genre of music includes styles of Folk, Blues, Jazz, easy listening and soft Rock depending on the artists. Saturday November 15th will showcase two talented acts with Sarah Collyer playing at 7pm followed by Sadie and Jay at 8pm. With a luxurious voice and elegant approach to music, Sarah Collyer has been influenced by jazz greats like Nina Simone and Miles Davis, but finds inspiration in contemporary artists like Melody Gardot, Diana Krall, and even Tom Waits. Since the release of her first EP This Way in 2009, Sarah has performed regularly, touring Japan in 2010 and London in 2013. On home soil, Sarah regularly performs at venues and events including The Brisbane Powerhouse, the Noosa Jazz Festival, the Valley Jazz Festival, Warwick Jumpers and Jazz, The Gold Coast Arts Centre, The Brisbane Jazz Club and RedFest. Folk duo, Sadie and Jay, have separately had extensive careers playing folk and blues festivals and gigs in Queensland and New South Wales. When the pair met in late 2012 at The Bug in New Farm, both were looking for a possible collaboration, so performed together at Folk Redlands, and have been performing together in the two years since. Living in the Centenary suburbs in the 1800s – part 3 Another interesting early pioneer of our suburbs, settling in Seventeen Mile Rocks, was Peter Belz. He and his wife Wilhelmine, both born in Germany, initially owned 29 acres of land in 1866, a year that saw continued rain and flooding! Life was hard with the couple clearing only a hectare for corn in the first year. An amusing story shows just how different life was then. As there were so many snakes around Wilhelmine kept hens eggs in her bra to hatch the chicks and kept the hens under the bed at night to protect them from carpet snakes! Peter continued to purchase land and by the time of his death in 1906, he owned 196 acres in Seventeen Mile Rocks and nine acres in Fig Tree Pocket. Their first home was called Round Hill and each of their four male children was gifted property. Five generations of the Belz family worked the land on successful dairies and mixed farms. Peter broke and bred horses and his eldest son Francis Peter supplied horses to such customers as the Castlemaine-Perkins Brewery at Milton, Darra Cement Works, butchers, bakers and the Queensland police force. Four generations of Belz children attended the Seventeen Mile Rocks School. Peter Francis was a caring member of the local community helping poorer families in their time of need with food, a horse or a milking cow. He was also known for his veterinary and blacksmithing skills. The Belz family left this area in 1946 but were remembered with the official opening of Pioneer Belz Park, by the Brisbane City Council in 2008. QCWA Centenary
Many are unaware that the CWA is extremely active in the greater Brisbane area and the launch of the Centenary branch in August this year has yet again expanded the CWA network in Brisbane. The Centenary branch is welcoming new members who are interested in making new friends, learning a variety of new arts and crafts and in learning about the role of the CWA in both Queensland and the world. This year some members taught others to knit, crochet, make knee rugs and candlewick and in November are looking forward to making beautiful Christmas wreaths. In 2015, the Branch will again be offering its members a wide variety of art and craft and other interesting activities in a friendly, informal setting. Hello Readers In just a few short weeks Year 12 students from schools all over Australia will graduate. There will be lots of celebrations leading up to this exciting period in their lives and some sad farewells as they leave the environment which as been a significant influence in their formative years. Just what do Girl Guides do? by Sue Gross - Secretary, Jamboree Heights Girl Guides District
Is it just sewing and cooking? No way! Girl Guides do sewing and cooking but that’s a very small part of the fun they have. They also do adventurous activities like abseiling, canoeing, hiking, rock wall climbing, camping, building campfires, and so much more. Girl Guides support charitable causes, work on their own well-being, play games and learn about team work and leadership. What if my girl is very shy? Each girl is nurtured Brownie Guides feeding sheep on farmstay camp at and helped along by our Bestbrook Mountain Resort fantastic, caring Leaders. Everyone is included and given opportunities but not forced into anything. Through gentle guidance and encouragement from peers, shy or introverted girls can come out of their shells and amaze parents with the difference in their confidence. These are proud moments for our Leaders. Is religion a factor? At one time, Girl Guides was a Christian organisation and a pledge to God (and the Queen) was included in the Promise all Girl Guides take. However, as we are now such a diverse society, Girl Guides has recognised the need to be more inclusive and hence those terms have been removed and Girl Guides is now non-denominational. What qualifications do Leaders have? All Leaders undergo training in the Girl Guide programs including content and implementation. This training is ongoing and refreshed regularly. Leaders all hold CPR, first-aid qualifications and a Blue Card. Who are Leaders? Leaders are volunteers who have either been Guides themselves and have continued to be part of the Guiding community; been or currently are parents/ carers/relatives of Guides; or have an interest in working with children. Leaders are generally always known by one or more families in the District so are not complete strangers. Most of all, Leaders are people who believe in Girl Guides and the empowerment of our girls. Jamboree Heights Girl Guides will have vacancies in 2015 for girls aged 10-12. Younger girls can be put onto a waiting list. Families in Brisbane’s South-West will pay less to catch public transport after the Government recently announced fares are to be cut by five per cent with savings from the scrapped failed carbon tax. It is the first time in Queensland history that there will be a reduction in fares across the state for bus, train and ferry passengers. Fares will be also be frozen in 2015, so Queenslanders will actually save 7.5 per cent next year. It’s a terrific result for our local community and serves as more proof that this State Government is delivering a strong plan for a brighter future. A regular commuter travelling to work in the Brisbane CBD from stations in my electorate of Mount Ommaney; Darra, Oxley or Corinda will save $99 per year. More than 22,000 people had taken part in the two-week survey, with 74 per cent of the public opting to have lower fares. We left it up to Queenslanders to decide where the $30 million of carbon tax savings should be reinvested and their clear choice was a reduction in fares.

Jindalee Probus Club The Jindalee Probus Club meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Jindalee Golf Club commencing at 10.00 am. Probus Club of Centenary Suburbs The club meets at the Jindalee Bowls Club on the fourth Tuesday of each month with morning tea at 10 am. Centenary Evening VIEW Club The Centenary Evening VIEW Club will celebrate it’s 20th birthday at the dinner meeting on Monday 10th November. The theme of the evening is 20 and Cruising so members and guests are invited to dress for summer holiday fun and come aboard the good ship Centenary Evening. The ‘cruise’ will start with welcome aboard canapés at 6.30 pm, followed by a short meeting then a delicious diner and birthday cake, concluding with a fashion parade by Fashions on the Go. Cost for the evening is $35 and bookings are essential. Women of all ages are invited to attend and the club is hoping that many past members and new potential members will join in for a night of fun and friendship. All activities and events raise funds for the Learning for Life Program. VIEW is a valued part of the Smith Family which is an independent organisation committed to helping Australian disadvantaged children by unlocking opportunities through education and learning support. Members enjoyed the fashion parade in October with so many lovely colourful outfits to admire and purchase.
