Headaches and Neck Pain Addressing the Cause
If You Suffer From Headaches or Neck Pain That Keep Coming Back, These Are The Facts You Must Know Living with headaches is tough.
Could This Be Your Solution?
Day after day of being miserable, irritable, and looking a lot older than you really are. The frustration of knowing that your friends and family don’t understand what you’re going through. Add this to doctors’ visits, MRI’s and CT scans -- which only come back with “normal” results. And that’s not all … trying one medication after another, feeling like you’re on a merry-go-round of drugs. All this is enough to make anyone want to scream!
We offer a fresh approach, where we aim to identify and correct the actual cause of your problem. You owe it to yourself to find out if your headaches or neck pain are associated with an abnormal neck curve, with a $30 Headache Evaluation. What does this include? Everything. Take a look at what you will receive: • An in-depth consultation about your headaches where we will listen … really listen … to the details of your unique situation. • A complete neuromuscular and skeletal examination of the head and neck so we can find the problem. • A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if posture or abnormal spinal curves are associated with your pain … (NOTE: If needed, these are bulk billed). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-rays where we’ll map out how you can get rid of your headaches once and for all.
IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS: 1) An abnormal spinal curve is far more common in people who suffer from ongoing headaches and neck pain 2) An abnormal spinal curve can be readily identified using a standing x-ray image. 3) An abnormal spinal curve can be consistently improved or corrected using tested, proven techniques.
Why not get rid of those debilitating headaches today? Read the full facts on this page!
We are Drs Keith and Michael Charlton, and we’ve been helping patients with neck pain and headaches live pain free by improving posture and restoring normal neck curves using specialized equipment. Every week we hear how people suffer from severe headaches – statements like … • “The pain just keeps coming back” • “Nothing I have tried gives lasting results” • “I feel like my head is in a vice.” • “My eyes hurt and I’m always tired.” • “I’ve had headaches since childhood.” • “The pain affects my moods and then my relationships suffer” They tell us they’re sick and tired of jumping from one headache medication to the next. Imagine being able to live life like a normal person again, pain free and without headaches -- being able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and not have to worry that your headache will hit you at just the wrong time.
NORMAL NECK CURVE FOR PAIN FREE PERSON
More Pills Are Not The Solution As the clinic is actually a research centre for neck disorders and Dr Keith has two higher degrees, we are sticklers for the facts, so here’s what science says about abnormal neck curves and posture. • The further forward the head goes over the shoulders, the higher the incidence of headaches (Cephalalgia 2006;26(3):314).
• Headache patients show significantly s t r a i g ht e n e d c e r v ic a l c u r ve configurations (Headache 1993;33:90-5). • Reversal of the neck curve leads to total spinal malalignment, rounding of the shoulders, headache, neck pain, scapular pain and possibly even low back pain (Orthop Traumatol

• A neck curve is a protective window against neck pain, whilst less curve is a risk factor for neck pain and a flat neck is a risk factor for chronic neck pain (Spine 2004;29(22):2485-92). • The odds that a patient with neck pain has a straight or reversed neck curve are 18 times greater than patients without neck pain (JMPT

Personally Speaking
By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis
It seems to be that society celebrates the strong, or those perceived to be anyway. We are all about the winners, the heroes, strength and invincibility. And we all strive to be strong. We want to be known as someone who withstands trials, who stands firm and unwavering. We want to be those people and we want to be around those people. We don’t like weakness, generally. I’m no psychologist but I wonder if it’s because it reminds us of our own weakness and in a world that is full of platitudes about how strong we are on the inside, about overcoming obstacles and standing up, speaking out, that just won’t do. Here’s what I don’t get: if we logically can understand that we are all, each and every one of us, weak at times, why is it such a big deal? I suspect the answer lies in our past memories of being hurt, of being in a vulnerable position, mentally, emotionally, physically, that we shy away from the possibility of having to go through that pain again. And we are right. It’s not prudent to reveal your weaknesses to those who can, or who have in the past, hurt you. We must be wise about where and with whom we make ourselves vulnerable. Yet I think there is also wisdom in taking a chance. Opening up to someone about how you’re feeling, really feeling, can path the way to deeper, more meaningful communication. Sometimes, until we make ourselves vulnerable we can’t truly enter into worthwhile relationships. We need to let the other person see us warts and all. And we also need to allow them to do the same. When we are sharing vulnerabilities, we form bonds that can lay a wonderful foundation for future connection. There are times, though, when we make ourselves vulnerable and we don’t know the outcome. We have no idea how that person will respond to us showing them our weaknesses, so it’s risky. The hope is that they will respond with sensitivity, gentleness and kindness. Now, you and I both know that certainly isn’t always the case is it? We’ve all been mistreated by someone we thought we could trust, we’ve all shared something close to our hearts, only to find it used against us at a later date. It’s awful. It hurts. And it’s hard to move past. But in order to not allow those incidences to affect the rest of our lives and relationships, we simply must risk again. We must resolve to not let the hurt grow into bitterness and resentment. Allowing someone else’s actions to change who we are makes no sense. Know that for every person who doesn’t handle your weakness in the right way, there are ten others who will. We just need to be discerning and never give up risking the hurt to find the ones who are worth risking it for.

Finding a baby bird
Spring is the nesting season for many of our native bird species. When the chicks first leave the nest, they concentrate on learning to fly under the watchful eyes of their parents. Occasionally, wellmeaning people may assume the bird is sick or in distress and need help, so take it to their vet, RSPCA or wildlife carer. These birds then need specialised care and some do not survive to be released into the wild. What should you do? If you see a baby bird, watch it to see if the parents come back to feed it. If they do, leave it alone, and prevent your dogs and cats from getting access to it. If the bird is a really young chick with down-feathers, you could try putting it back in the nest. If the bird has fallen from the nest and is lying on the ground, pick it up and place it on a branch out of reach of cats. You can also make a nest from an ice-cream bucket with holes in the bottom, and attach it to the tree with the chick inside. It is always better for the young to be raised by their natural parents than by a human carer. All native birds in Queensland are protected under the Nature Conservation Act, which states that they cannot be taken from the wild unless they are genuinely sick or injured. Call Parks and Wildlife on 1300 654 721 for advice. Giving wildlife its best chance Give baby birds places to run for cover from predators by planting native shrubs and placing tree hollows and logs in your yard. Cats and dogs kill countless wild animals every year. Confine and supervise your pet to protect wildlife. Keeping a cat indoors at night is generally not sufficient as many will hunt during the day. Large meshed cat-enclosures are available from Catmax (www.catmax.com.au) and allow cats and wildlife to coexist in harmony.

Cutting the cake L-R: Co-director Sharon Pick, Founding Director Rosemary Lacey, Co-Director Kathy Shea. Over 700 people gathered to celebrate Jamboree Community Kindergarten 20th anniversary on Sunday 25th August. Past, present and future students, teachers and families were treated to free cupcakes and entertainment but for most it was a good excuse to get back to kindy and see their old teachers and mix with old kindy friends. The founding Jamboree Community Kindergarten Director Rosemary Lacey attended, along with Cr Matthew Burke who helped fund the event through the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund. Jamboree Community Kindergarten Co-Director, Sharon Pick said it was lovely to see many familiar faces at the event. “We were overwhelmed with the amount of people who showed up to celebrate our birthday,” Ms Pick said. “A lot of the people who came to the event had very fond memories of the kindy. While most said it felt like they were here only yesterday, everyone noted the biggest change would have to be the playground which we had remodelled at the end of last year,” she said. Amongst the celebrations, staff unveiled an art installation that sits at the front of the kindy on Beanland Street and features the handprint of every child who attended the Kindergarten in its 20th year. A time capsule was also buried containing items such as photographs, artwork by the current students and a USB containing footage of the children performing their favourite songs. Jamboree Community Kindergarten Co-Director Sharon Pick said she is proud of the fact that the kindy has been providing a high quality kindergarten program in the Centenary suburbs for the past 20 years and is looking forward to continuing the quality program for the next 20 years. “We cannot wait to be invited back to the 40th celebrations to dig up the time capsule and see how much the kindy has changed,” Ms Pick said. If you want your child to be a part of the next 20 years at Jamboree Community Kindergarten call 3376 1556 or visit www.jamboreekindy.com.

Our general meetings are held on the first Tuesday each month starting at 9.30am between February and December at the Jindalee Bowls Club except for November, when it is on the second Tuesday as we have to make way for the Melbourne Cup. The meetings are followed by either an Entertainer or Guest Speaker. Come and enjoy a delicious morning tea before the meeting starts. Our October meeting will also incorporate a plant sale capably organized by one of our members, Hugh. Our members enjoyed a coach trip in September with Cross Country Tours to Glengallan Homestead, which is just outside Warwick. A delicious morning tea and lunch are included in all our coach trips. Our trip in November is a mystery trip which only the organizers know where we are going – great fun! Explorer Trips are held every two months where members use public transport. Our Explorer Trip in October is a boat ride up and down the Brisbane River whilst relaxing and dining with friends over a buffet lunch. Evening dinners are held on the second Wednesday of each month, especially to include members who are still working and are unable to attend daytime activities. The dinner in October will be at the ‘Ox’, corner of Oxley and Ipswich Roads, Oxley, commencing at 6.30pm. We also enjoy Steady Steps, a gentle exercise program, at the Centenary Uniting Church Hall every Monday Morning at 9am, and Zumba Gold for the more energetic at the same venue at 9.15am on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Wednesdays and 8.15am on the 2nd Wednesday each month. Members enjoy playing MahJong at the Mt Ommaney Library on the first and second Thursdays each month at 10am. We don’t score, which makes it more fun, and we are willing to teach new members. There is a book club which is held at the Jindalee Bowls Club Library at 10am on the 3rd Thursday of the month from May to October. Anyone fifty years of age or more is welcome to attend our meetings and will be greeted at the door. Come as a visitor for the first time and if you like it, as we are sure you will, you can then join at the next month’s general meeting. The annual membership cost for a single person is $40 and $50 for a couple, which is less than a cup of coffee a week. For more details, please contact Elaine on 3376 1986.

CSH students take on the virtual business world Students from Centenary State High School could be the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders thanks to a virtual business class being offered at the school. Twenty-eight year 10 students are participating in hands on business studies through the Virtual Enterprise Australia (VEA) McDonald’s Virtual Business Program (MVBP), with support provided by McDonald’s licensee John Prior. As the owner of Jindalee and Mt Ommaney McDonald’s restaurants, John is passionate about business and wants to encourage young people to follow in his footsteps. “I feel extremely fortunate to be in a position to inspire future business men and women of Australia,” he said. “I love being able to give something back to the community - being a mentor is something I am very passionate about and it’s great to see such talent and enthusiasm around the classroom.” In addition to mentoring the students, John has also funded the 28 students by paying the program registration fees. The MVBP program aims to enhance students’ employability by giving hands on and real-life experience in business, as they work through areas such as reception, sales, human resources, marketing, accounts payable and more. Centenary State High School Teacher, Richard Magoffin said the MVBP has proven to be a success with the students. “This is something that hasn’t been offered at our school before; it gives the students a new and fresh approach to learning. “Through three 70 minute classes a week, the students get a chance to work in every area of business, allowing them to find a career path they may want to pursue

The students’ virtual business is called Supreme Industries, where they distribute fashion products such as jeans and jackets, and trade with other virtual companies, suppliers and customers through the MVBP’s online space. Some of the students are also gaining real world experience, with two students now working at McDonald’s Jindalee and Mt Ommaney.

Centenary Suburbs Historical Society update
by Vice President Lynda Young
National Trust honours local history The 2013 Queensland Heritage Awards were held last month at Old Government House in the presence of Her Excellency, Ms Penelope Wensley AC, Governor of Queensland. The Society was delighted that one of our members, Meg Gordon, was presented a Highly Commended Award, in The Governor’s Heritage Award category. The Governor presented the award to Meg for her research into and documentation of Centenary Suburbs history in three themed and referenced local history books: When River Was Roadway; Pastoralists of Brisbane Town’s Fringe; and Thomas Boyland – an adaptive man. On behalf of the Society, the President, Caroline Hamilton also accepted an award in the same category as the publishing body. In total, eight members from the Centenary Suburbs Historical Society attended the ceremony to join Meg in celebrating her individual award. These awards are a great honour for a volunteer organisation such as ours in recognising our contribution to the preservation of Queensland’s heritage, and encourage us to continue our aim of - collecting today, preserving for tomorrow. All of Meg’s books can be ordered online at cshsoc.org.au/ or purchased from Cr Bourke’s Jamboree Ward Office at the Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre, Dandenong Road, Mt Ommaney.
Art show and market huge success The recent Mount Ommaney Special School P&C Baby & Kids Market was also combined with their annual student Art Show and auction. A great day was had by all with almost $6000 raised for the P&C towards the purchase of specialised therapeutic equipment for the school. However, it was so much more than a fundraising event as it provided a wonderful opportunity for the local community to come into the school and learn a little bit about the creative talents of the students. A team of around 50 volunteers support the market and over 400 community members flocked through the gates to grab a wide variety of bargains from the stallholders, selling both pre-loved and new, boutique items. The art show itself was a great success and many people were astounded by the quality of the pieces on display. The focus of the annual art show is on the students’ abilities, independence and creativity and it clearly students what students are able to achieve given time, a variety of resources and creative thinking.

I’ve always been curious as to how much practical experience cosmetic injectors have access to, whether it be on a refresher course basis, or a new product launch. Well, I can tell you that my curiosity is now fully satisfied! As you know, we have the wonderful Dr Andrew Molloy on board to administer our cosmetic injectables. It was at Andrew’s request that I was his model for both a refresher course, and new product launch, held in Sydney on 30th and 31st August. Unbelievable! Just unbelievable! The course was over two full days and boy, not only was the workload high, but both the attendees and their work were minutely scrutinised. No stone was left unturned. Training was conducted using Phi callipers (everything in the universe is based on the proportion 1 to 1.618- often called the Phi or Divine/Golden proportion). This universal system of balance and harmony is the only reliable, methodical, mathematical and logical approach to facial assessment and enhancement. The callipers were used to maximise each individual models beauty by bringing the proportions of their features as close to Phi as possible within the divine proportion for that individual face, using the existing blueprint of their facial anatomy! No model got the same lips and cheek bones. Each injector worked towards the ideal facial contour, harmonious proportions and balanced facial curves. The closer a face is to Phi proportion the more attractive they are considered. Both Andrew and I returned exhausted (yes, being a model is exhausting!) yet fully charged and ready to put the new techniques and products into practice. We are a clinic that focuses on complete facial aesthetics so, are my features aesthetically balanced? Are they in keeping with my age? Do I look more refreshed and feel better in myself? Well, opposite is a picture of myself two days prior to the injectables. Below is a link to a picture of myself 10 days post injectables – I will leave you to be the judge. www.facebook.com/pages/Advanced-Skin-CareClinic/335166836502782 If you are considering injectables or topping up what you currently have, then we would love to give you a free, no obligation consultation.

ith the recent federal Election we saw a change of Government with Tony Abbott becoming Australia’s 28th Prime Minister. Can I take this opportunity to congratulate all candidates who participated and members who were elected. I know the hard work that it takes to run a campaign. We look forward to working with the new Federal Government. In this column I would like to share with you some of the Newman Governments achievements over the last 18 months. Our Blueprint for Better Healthcare in Queensland has guided this massive turnaround and the figures prove it – for example, 75% of emergency department patients are now processed within four hours compared with 64% a year ago. A year ago, the cost of providing essential health services was 11% higher than the national average. Now, devolved local management is delivering and our redirected savings have seen targets for clinical activity not just met but exceeded. The patient must be the focus, not the management. Much remains to be done – we recognise that, but local boards, which reflect the communities they serve, have made lasting improvements. Housing activity is a key indicator of our financial well-being. Independent statistics have recently highlighted our outstanding success – Housing Industry Association figures show our new home sales in July were up 12.6% despite a national fall of 4.6% while Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data show a resurgence in both investor and owner-occupier activity. The Queensland Government’s $15,000 Great Start Grant for first home buyers purchasing a new home has given a great incentive to buy and further develop the construction industry. Again, the ABS provides the evidence – in the last financial year, Queensland outperformed every other State. Trade and Investment Queensland Figures show that• Queensland is Australia’s best performing state economy. • Queensland is a great place to invest and has outperformed every other Australian state last financial year. • We are giving businesses the confidence to invest, employ and grow in our state. Queensland is forecast to be the fastest growing State economy from 21014 -15, employment is double the national growth rate, population growth is the highest in Australia, more than a quarter of all business investment is happening here – and the list goes on. While there is still much more to do the Queensland Government recognises this is a great state with great opportunities.
Volunteer at RSPCA this spring
An increase in rescue calls has signalled the arrival of spring at RSPCA Queensland’s Animal Care Campus, and the Wacol site is in desperate need of volunteers to answer these calls and perform other important tasks. RSPCA Queensland is seeking animal lovers for volunteer roles in the Animal Care Campus’ Call Centre and Laundry. “Our teams are working hard to meet increased demands this spring, but we need more volunteers to share the workload,” said RSPCA Queensland Volunteer Services Senior Manager, Amanda McNaught. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the RSPCA, and we couldn’t exist without them,” Ms McNaught said. The Call Centre takes about 300,000 calls a year and, with a huge increase in calls received about animals requiring assistance due to the warmer weather, the Centre urgently needs to expand its team of dedicated volunteers. Animals at the Wacol campus also rely upon volunteers at the onsite Laundry, who ensure that all cats, dogs, wildlife, and other animals have clean, comfortable bedding each night. The Laundry processes 20 bins of washing each day, and more volunteers are required to operate commercial washers and dryers and store fresh laundry in the supply room. “Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding, and volunteers in all areas at the RSPCA have the satisfaction of knowing that they’re helping to give most animals a second chance,” Ms McNaught said. If you like working to support animals and enjoy meeting new people, then consider volunteering at the RSPCA Queensland Animal Care Campus at Wacol. Volunteer roles are available seven days a week and all volunteers attend a Volunteer Orientation and Level 1 of Four Paws Forward training on their first day, with further training provided throughout the year. RSPCA Queensland volunteers can also participate in Make Your Mark, a new program that recognises and rewards RSPCA team members. Anyone interested in volunteering can email volunteering@rspca Queensland.org.au or phone the Brisbane Volunteer Coordinator on 3426 9915 to find out more. Page 10 - October 2013 - The Centenary News
Hello Readers Globalization is flattening the world and challenging companies, countries and individuals as never before, as Tom Friedman points out in his 2005 book, The World is Flat. Societies need citizens who are smarter, more creative, and more capable of leading, managing, collaborating and networking with productive people around the world. In the future, people won’t think twice about working with someone at a distance on a collaborative project. Being able to collaborate effectively requires a range of skills including listening, evaluation of ideas and suggestions, problem solving, articulation and communication of ideas, reflection and learning from others. The St John’s newly developed Future Thinkers Program is an extension program which provides students with the opportunity to better understand the elements of creative and critical thinking, and to practice and enhance their own creative and critical thinking skills whilst collaborating both locally and globally. The course work for the Future Thinkers Program is set in the context of some important global challenges that affect us all, and to which we have no clear “correct” solutions, for example: the risk and spread of serious infectious diseases in epidemics in modern societies, the implications of increasing human population on global resources, energy, environment and climate, and the challenges that the development of robotics in our everyday lives will impact the future in which we live. Possible solutions to global issues such as these are hotly debated, and give the perfect setting to practice recognising and evaluating facts, ideas, opinions and arguments. Special emphasis is put on understanding and extracting the arguments in different kinds of discourses, analysing the arguments and discerning whether the reasoning is correct. Students work on topics and concepts that they are engaged with and develop actual “plans of actions” for problems and innovations that they have identified. The Future Thinkers Program is offered, by invitation, to students in Years 9 and 10. If you would like the opportunity to find out more or if you would like your child considered for this program please contact St John’s , enquiries@sjac. qld.edu.au or by phone 07 3372 0176. The foundation of St John’s educational philosophy is personalised, future focused education that leads to exceptional student achievement.

Coaching For Life
with Dr Kate Lemerle PhD MAPS Dr Kate Lemerle has over 25 years experience in the health industry and is a Coaching Psychologist with Chrysalis Wellness Services
Happiness is probably the most important feeling in our lives. We either bask in it when we have it, or miss it (and go looking for it) when we don’t. Either way, most people believe that it’s just another emotion that comes and goes, and we can’t make it happen. However, findings from research over the last decade have shown that there is much more to this positive state than meets the eye. Happiness is more than a measure of personal wellbeing – it is a crucial factor for physical health; it determines our work performance and success; it has a direct impact on the quality of our relationships; and it underpins a healthy community. At the physiological level, negative emotions have been found to hurt immune, cardiovascular, and endocrine functioning. Happy people on average tend to be healthier. They have healthier immune, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems, and have fewer illnesses and accidents. Happy people have better social relationships, which are more trusting, supportive, respectful, helpful, and cooperative. And families that work towards building happy relationships are less likely to fall apart. Happy people work better with others so output is increased, conflict decreased, and new ideas more likely to happen. Businesses that actively promote work satisfaction and happiness in their staff are more productive. Happy people are also better citizens and build the “social capital” of the community and the nation. They donate more money to charities, give more volunteer time to worthy causes, and are more accepting of others who are different. Lack of happiness is bad for overall health and levels of functioning. People who are depressed, fearful, and angry for long periods of time have problems with health, poor relationships with family and friends, and are not good citizens at their workplace or in the community, and often isolate themselves or actively engage in harmful or antisocial activities. It is important to remember that happy people occasionally do feel unhappy. But they approach negative emotions differently. For example, if someone has upset them, they are more likely to take action to deal with the situation in a way that rebuilds the relationship. Or if an event has caused pain or distress, they are more likely to look for the “silver lining” or blessings arising from the situation. They typically spend less time worrying about the cause of their unhappiness, and more time exploring ways to move forward. And they typically take a bigger picture view of situations causing bad feelings, for example, using a personal life event to become actively involved in changing the world for the better rather than focusing only on their personal responses. Life coaching is a great way to learn to manage your own happiness more effectively, to learn techniques for reducing the impact of bad emotions, and strengthen the good ones like happiness.
