Calves go to school In these days of computers and ipads in classrooms, it is easy to forget about the equipment used and activities undertaken by school children of sixty years ago. Young children wrote on slates and progressed to fountain pens with small bottles of ink. Books, lunch and other items were carried to and from school in small backpacks.

In Seventeen Mile Rocks, where some children walked up to several kilometres to school, the weather sometimes determined the time that school finished. The teacher would keep a lookout for approaching storms and send home earliest those children who had the greatest distance to walk.

About 1949, for two years, the Seventeen Mile Rocks school curriculum included a Calf Club. Each child was expected to look after his/her own calf at home for several months, feeding, grooming and training it to walk on lead similar to ‘showing’ cattle at the RNA. In the process, the children learnt about feeding, care, hygiene, bacteria and diseases.

On the day of judging, children took their calves to school and paraded before the judge, an official from the Department of Agriculture & Stock, and a silver cup was presented to the winner. The Calf Club was part of the Education Department’s agricultural education program for children in rural areas.

Many years later, the school building had a different role in supporting the interests of rural children. After Sir Hercules Sinnamon acquired the then disused school building, he made it available to the Indooroopilly branch of Rural Youth for its monthly meetings in the 1970s. The Rural Youth movement, originally created to support farming interests, had extended to include city children and to promote a common bond between city and country children. In the late 1980s, Sir Hercules, after relocating the school building and play shed to Seventeen Mile Rocks Road, made it available for visiting school children as an interactive museum. The aim was to demonstrate school curriculum and equipment of earlier times.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Recently, it was the 60th anniversary of my parent’s first date. They were 15 and 16 years old and went to the cinema to see Carousel. To celebrate the occasion, my father surprised my mother with flowers, her favourite chocolates and a DVD of the movie, which they spent the afternoon enjoying together.

I was blessed to grow up enfolded in this 60 year love affair. One of my memories is of my father buying my mother an orchid flower every week for what seemed years. My mother, home cook extraordinaire, was constantly cooking his favourite everything. They never miss an opportunity to hold hands or say something wonderful about the other. I never once, to this day, have heard one of them say something degrading about the other, regardless of whether the other one was out of earshot or not.

I learnt a lot about myself as a woman and what it meant to be a wife and mother from my father. It might seem strange that I didn’t say mother there but here’s the thing - from my father I learnt my intrinsic worth and value by watching how he treated my mother. From my mother I learnt many other things but what to expect from a man, how I deserve to be treated and valued was taught by my father. He taught me that mothering was of huge importance by appreciating all my mother did in the home. He never saw her role as ‘less than’ simply because she didn’t go out to work. He never questioned ‘what she did all day’ or diminish the countless, often thankless, jobs she did to keep the household with five children just nine years apart, running smoothly. My father taught me that I could be and do anything - that gender was no barrier.

We learn so much from our fathers. And more often, we learn the things that aren’t directly said or done to us. My father never sat me down and told me how much he loved my mother or how much he appreciated her, he didn’t need to. I could see it and feel it.

Like I said, I know I had what many would describe as an idyllic childhood, although it wasn’t perfect, it was wonderful. And I know that many, many people don’t have the childhood I had; sadly, many fathers are less than ideal and some cause more harm than good.

And because of this, we often downplay the importance of fathers or father-figures in society. So this is a shout-out to all the great fathers out there this Father’s Day. To the fathers who didn’t have great fathers to model on but are turning it around for the next generation, to the fathers who value the wives and mothers, to the fathers who are teaching their girls to fish and play soccer and letting their sons ‘do their hair’ or supporting them in the arts. To all the fathers out there who are just doing a damn fine job of doing the best they can.

You are important. You are teaching your children more than you will ever realise. And one day, they will thank you.

The onset of spring brings with it the return of warmer weather and the end of the winter sports season. Swimming is a fantastic summer sports option.

The Jamboree Heights Swimming Club is located at Beanland St, Jamboree Heights. The club trains all year in a 25m pool (heated during winter) and caters for beginner swimmers aged five and up in the Mini-Squad, through to the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Squads.

Confident swimmers who are able to swim 25m of each stroke are able to join the Junior squad, whilst progression to the Intermediate and Senior squads is at the discretion of the Head Coach, Cam Smith. Cam is a passionate Head Coach and brings out the best in all the swimmers by building their trust and confidence.

Membership of the Jamboree Heights Swimming Club is required before swimming in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior squads. There are morning and afternoon options available for training for all squads during the summer, and bookings for these training times are required prior to commencing swim training. The Mini-Squad classes are in high demand and are usually booked out very quickly.

There are a wide range of reasons as to why the children in the club swim – some swim for fitness, others to train for competition, but the kids all swim because they enjoy it!

During the summer season (term four and term one), the club holds a Friday night club meet. This commences at 6pm on most Fridays during the season, and is a fun and family friendly evening where parents and children can socialise with each other and the children can practice their swimming skills in a relaxed environment. Parental support is a key factor in the running of these club nights.

Photo courtesy of Adorn Photography After an overcast and ominous start on Saturday morning the weather turned it on for the rest of the weekend.

Over 10,000 people came and revelled in the festival strolling through the market stalls, learning more about our city from the City Smart marquee, Crimestoppers and the Historical Society.

Children got involved in the sand sculpting workshops, and had a go at circus skills and plaster painting and enjoying the interaction with the baby animals and reptiles.

Even our four legged friends were looked after by the vets, groomers and a variety of pet stalls.

The ‘best ever fireworks display’ among the gasps of delight was heard numerous times on the Saturday night, which followed the amazing performances from Casey Barnes, the Army rock band and the Saturday night finale Mental as Anything.

The Carfest on Sunday included cars, motorbikes, Hotrods, 4WD and even a vintage fire engine never seen at the festival before, and again ‘wow that was the best ever’ was heard from patrons.

The entertainment on both the Calm Events and Best Music Shop stages was wonderful including our local Centenary High school band and dance groups, wildlife shows, Silken Thomas and the Sunday afternoon with Peter Cupples and Jon English with the finale from the Allstars led by Tim Gaze and Phil Emmanuel.

Macfarlane Street Market is on again!

St. Catherine’s Anglican Church Ladies’ Fellowship is again combining with the Centenary Salvation Army to stage another Macfarlane Street Markets at Middle Park on Saturday 5 September from 8am to noon.

In a combined program, St. Catherine’s are running their popular Babies and Kids Market with stall holders selling items including quality clothes, toys, books, prams and children’s furniture while the Salvation Army are again running their popular Car Boot Sale at the same time.

The local Girl Guides group and Middle Park State School P&C have again been invited to join in the day.

St. Catherine’s Rector Rev. Tania Eichler said the Macfarlane Street Markets that the four community groups joined together for in March earlier this year had proven to be a big success, and she said she was delighted that they were again working with the Salvation Army to L-R: Ladies Fellowship Secretary Lynda Young, Rev. Tania stage this community event.

“Locals have been asking when we would be having another Eichler, President Louise Waterhouse, Treasurer Rhonda Harper and local new mum Hayley Lennon with baby Emily. combined Market Day,” she said.

Salvation Army Car Boot Sale Co-ordinator Jo Woolston said it was great that they were involved again, and they were also having a Sausage Sizzle with Drinks, plus books for sale at $1.00 from their Mega Book Stall, as well as many other great bargains. It is expected that Macfarlane Street at Middle Park would again come alive with activity on the morning, including morning teas with pikelets and the sausage sizzle, all providing lots of fun for those attending and great bargains to be had for the local Centenary Suburbs community residents attending.

St. Catherine’s Ladies Fellowship Treasurer Rhonda Harper said their group make a donation to a community organisation from each fundraiser. “This time we have selected the Anglicare TRACC Foster Care program – a very vital service,” she said.

While the Salvation Army will use their proceeds to continue their important community work.

Everyone likes a birthday celebration and it has been no exception at St John’s 22nd birthday held last week.

Birthdays give us time to reflect on our achievements during the year and to be inspired to reach our goals in the year ahead.

There are many achievements in a busy school such as ours however in particular we acknowledged the achievement of our students in reaching the semifinals in the Conrad Challenge and going to the Kennedy Space Centre and NASA, Florida, USA for the Innovation Summit. We hosted a STEM Conference Day with QUT and were inspired by Guest Speaker Mr Peter Nikoloff, Executive Director of Nova Systems on working in the mechanical and aeronautical engineering industry; we hosted the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge (BPAC) for hundreds of students from local dance schools; our global education focus was enhanced by the arrival of Ms Wendy Du a teacher from the Confucius Institute UQ who assists with our Chinese Language program, we joined in the Annual Dragon Boats Race on Forest Lake, 29 students participated in the Antipodean Trip to Borneo for community service activities building a church village and we are the only Anglican School in Australia embracing new ways to approach prayer with our nationally recognized Prayer Spaces for both primary and secondary students.

At the Foundation Day Assembly, inspiration came from Old Collegian Sarah Timmerman, founder of the online fashion business Beginning Boutique. Sarah has been nationally recognised for her skills, her insight, and her courage in taking her small business venture to a multimillion dollar on line business in just a few years. In her address she told the students that it was at Market Day in Year Ten that she knew she wanted to own a business. Having won the 2014 Brisbane Business New Young Entrepreneur Award for Retail, this week Sarah’s business won the Telstra Qld Business of the Year. Sarah says ‘it’s about community and team.’ People want to be connected, to belong and Sarah’s business model has created an online community of followers. Excellent!

Samyunktha, with some of the many bracelets she made for Kiwanis Club of Brisbane that were included in care kits passed onto foster children through the Project Love and Care charity.

For many American high school students, spending their summer vacation in the land down under would be a dream come true. Fourteen year old Samyunktha Arunkumar’s holiday dream was fulfilled through being involved with the Australian community and meeting the people.

Samyunktha, a student in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA, has been staying with her relative, Ms Roshini Mohan in Sinnamon Park, since June, and on her arrival in Brisbane made arrangements to become involved in the local community.

A neighbour of Ms Mohan is a teacher at the Inala State School and when she heard of Samyunktha wish, invited her to assist with year two students as a teacher’s aide.

Samyunktha was involved with the students up until her departure for the USA in the middle of August to resume her studies.

Community work was not new to Sam, as she likes to be known. Back in the States she leads a group of friends at her parents home in Pittsburg, to rehearse Bollywood music and dance to perform and raise money for local charities. At a recent concert the group raised $16,000 for veterans.

Sam also became involved with the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane, making bracelets for care kits, which are distributed to children in foster care throughout Queensland by a charity known as Project Love and Care.

Sam visited many of the local tourist attractions in South East Queensland, leaving her with wonderful memories, but it was the fulfilment of her dream that created lasting memories by working with the Australian people, their friendship and acceptance of a young American girl on her summer vacation.

Budgies and cockatiels as pets Its easy to dismiss the humble budgie or cockatiel as just a “retirement home” type pet but if you are looking for a pet that is intelligent, talkative, easy to care for and inexpensive to feed, what’s not to like? This beautiful Australian native is a great mimic and ever cheerful.

Breeding has created colours ranging from green to yellow to blue, pastels and full white. They have personalities that recognise and become quite attached to their owners. In short, they make wonderful pets for both young and old just so long as a few simply rules are followed. Most of these relate to correct diet and husbandry but here’s a few tips to maintain a healthy little friend.

Diet: An all bird seed diet is a recipe for disaster. It provides fat, oil and calories but little else. Not enough protein, not enough minerals like iodine or calcium and not enough Vitamin A. This can cause liver failure or thyroid disease with half normal life expectancy. A quality crumble pellet mix such as Vetapharm mix however makes a far better “base” diet to which you can add selected fruits, vegetables, bean sprouts, dandelions and thistles. Frozen vege mixes are also good.

Grit: A cuttlefish or hanging calcium/iodine supplemented type block bell is useful for providing minerals as well as grit to help digestion and will help keep the beak groomed. More calcium is required during egg laying.

Water: Budgies and cockatiels are dry climate dwellers so can survive long periods without water but water provided should be clean, changed regularly and placed in a higher area where the bird will not defecate.

Cage: Bigger is better. Birds need to exercise wings and minds and the typical tiny budgie cage is only really suitable as a night sleep area. A larger day cage is better or at least have periods where the bird can fly free. A larger cage can be easily decorated with Bottle Brush or Grevillea twigs and flowers. This gives the bird somewhere to perch, something to play with, and security to hide when resting. Birds are intelligent and providing some novelty and exercise is important to reduce boredom and stress behaviours. Fresh air is fine but try to avoid draughty areas or include a nesting box since the caged bird cannot escape if becoming chilled. Lastly, try to maintain a fairly normal day length of dusk till dawn by using a blackout cover.

Parasites: Birds can be wormed twice yearly with a proprietary liquid. I prefer to dose directly into beak or crop tube as budgies can survive long periods without water so may decline water which is “medicated”.

Egg binding: Egg laying is often triggered by recent rain. Binding or dystocia can occur in female birds and may be linked to inadequate dietary calcium, obesity, hypothermia and low humidity. If the bird appears to be straining or a swelling occurs near the vent, try gently warming and placing the bird in a more humid area first but if in doubt seek veterinary advice as it can be life threatening.

Major fundraiser a huge success Ladies from Centenary Evening View Club enjoyed an evening of fun and friendship at one of their major fund raising events for the year.

With the theme of ‘Bella Italia’, tables were set with red checked tablecloths and decorated with Italian flags and Chianti bottles with wax dripping candles. A feast of Italian inspired dishes including decadent desserts was served, and there was a great deal of chatter and laughter as the ladies enjoyed time together.

Money raised on the night will help the five students the club sponsors through The Smith Family Learning for Life program.

Several ladies from the club will be attending the National VIEW Convention in Wollongong. They will be among more than 600 women from across Australia who will descend on the city from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September.

The next monthly dinner meeting of the Centenary Evening VIEW Club will be on Monday 7 September, Centenary Evening VIEW Club members: one week earlier than normal due to the VIEW National Lyn Holmes, President Gaynor Hooper, Sandra Burgoyne, Convention being held the following week.

The guest speakers will be Jane McKibben, program co-ordinator for Learning for Life and a Learning for Life student who will give an insight into how the program has helped her with her education.

New park shelter Local residents are enjoying the latest addition to Rocks Riverside Park. This fantastic new shelter is also available for bookings by the public, making it the ideal location to hold music performances, birthday parties, displays and functions. National Seniors

Update by Marlene Worthington, Branch Secretary Upd

So much happened during August. Firstly, there was our Annual General Meeting at which I stepped aside as President and became Secretary again and we welcomed in our new Committee. This was then followed by our delicious morning tea where we celebrated the 60th Wedding Anniversary of Hugh and Mary Colebatch. Our guest speaker – Professor Roly Sussex gave us a great rendition of Australian English. It was really great listening to him. General Meetings are held on the first Tuesday each month except for November when we switch to the second Tuesday because of the Melbourne Cup being held.

Well, the Ekka has come and gone along with the Westerly winds, hopefully. We thoroughly enjoyed all the Seniors Week activities of which there were many. Our State member put on a ‘Seniors Expo’ which was very interesting, we had an Explorer Trip in to view the Commissariat Store in the City. A Concert at the Centenary Hub and finishing the week off by attending a play.

Our Steady Steps exercise classes every Monday morning at 9am still maintain a very good attendance. These are held at the Centenary Uniting Church Hall. It’s great to hear the music coming out of the hall and everyone dancing around enjoying themselves and looking so fit and healthy.

We had a great time on our Coach trip last month. We went to a farm up at the Sunshine Coast hinterland where they have a working horse farm. Big Clydesdales and little Shetlands. Everyone has a role and enjoys a more leisurely life than we hardworking city dwellers. Of course, we had to stop off on the way home for an ice cream.

Our next trip is to the Kingston Butter Factory and then on to an old village at Logan.

Now that the weather is starting to warm up a bit and the evenings are lighter longer, we may get more people to our Evening dinners. It’s been too cold to go out lately.

The MahJong group is still going well with new members constantly joining in to learn the complexities of the game, it’s really good practice for the old brain and we meet on the first two Thursdays 9am at the Mt Ommaney Library Meeting Room. We also have a book Club which meets at the Jindalee Bowls Club Library on the third Thursday each month.

Just remember, anyone aged 50 and over is welcome to attend our meetings and will be greeted at the door of the Bowls Club as a visitor, and if you like it, as we are sure you will, you can then join at the next month’s General Meeting.

Queensland Senior’s Week marks a time of year where the community thanks all Queensland seniors for their contributions and achievements to our great state.

For senior’s week this year, I held a community safety and wellbeing expo in conjunction with Volunteers in Policing and the Centenary North Police Beat.

The 2015 Mount Ommaney Seniors Expo sought to encourage all seniors to continue to lead active lives, stay safe and engage in new activities.

We were joined by various guest speakers about community safety and senior’s health and wellbeing, as well as information stalls from various local organisations.

I would like to thank the Volunteers in Policing team, Centenary North Police Beat and the Council on the Ageing (COTA), for their assistance and sponsorship of the Mount Ommaney Seniors Expo.

Spotlight of the Month: National Seniors With recent seniors week events, this month’s spotlight is on National Seniors.

National Seniors Australia branches are a great place for over 50s to get involved in discussing community issues, participate in social events, hear informative guest speakers and meet like-minded members.

Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary The Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary meets every Wednesday morning at Solitude Solutions, 5 Wills Court Mt Ommaney. Probus Club of Centenary Suburbs The club meets at the Jindalee Bowls Club on the fourth Tuesday of each month with morning tea at 10 am. A guest speaker delivers a presentation on an interesting topic and a light lunch is then served. Members also enjoy a monthly outing and special interest group activities. Chapel Hill VIEW Club Women of all ages and from all walks of life are invited to join members for lunch at Mount Ommaney Hotel Apartments on the first Tuesday of the month at 10.45am for 11.30am. Cost is $32.00 and bookings are essential. Most meetings have an interesting guest speaker with quality lucky door and raffle prizes that are generously donated by the club members, along with book and trading tables which are beautifully presented by four hard working ladies in order to raise funds for the Learning for Life program for disadvantaged Australian children. VIEW Club members enjoy a variety of activities and outings including the fashion parade in October, choir, bridge, luncheons, theatre, and bus tours. For September the enthusiastic program officer Joy has organised a pleasant outing to Government House followed by a picnic in the park at Mount Coot-tha and in November members are looking forward to dressing up for the theatre to see Ladies in Black at the Play House. After a fun and very successful 25th birthday luncheon members are now looking forward to the Springtime luncheon in September and invite anyone who would care to join them. Good News Community Playgroup Good News Community Playgroup meets at 45 Horizon Drive between the Centenary Christian Kindergarten and the Good News Lutheran School. The playgroup runs five days a week from Monday to Friday with sessions starting from 9.30-11.30am, which is perfect timing after dropping the big kids at school. Parents and children alike can enjoy spending some quality time with each other and other members. Catering for children from birth to pre-school age, playgroup offers sessions filled with lots of craft activities, toys, books, and heaps of fun both indoors and outdoors. Good News Community Playgroup has been running for over 30 years and were the winners of the Playgroup Queensland’s Nature Playgroup Award - Excellence in Outdoor play for 2014. My office is again hosting a Tax Help service this year until 28 October 2015. If you would like to book an appointment with our Tax Help volunteer, please contact my office on 3879 6440. To prepare for your tax return, you will need to bring the following information (where applicable) to the appointment: • Your myGov user ID and password • Your tax file number • An original or amended notice of assessment (any one from the last five years) that was issued before May this year • Your BSB and bank account details (lodgement will not be possible without these details) • Your Medicare card or number • Your private health insurance statement showing your fund details • All your (and you spouse’s) PAYG payment summaries from employers • All your (and your spouse’s) statements from banks and financial institutions showing interest received during the income year • All your (and your spouse’s) statements from Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs (including details of any tax-free pensions or benefits) • All your (and your spouse’s) payment summaries from super funds • All your (and your spouse’s) dividend, super and managed fund statements • All your (and your spouse’s) foreign income details and pension statements or details of the amounts you receive • All your (and your spouse’s) employment termination payment summaries • All your (and your spouse’s) receipts for gifts, donations and work-related expenses • All your (and your spouse’s) details of any child support payments made If you had a spouse (married or de facto) at any time during the financial year, you also need to bring details of their taxable income, including any of their documents to your appointment. We will need this information to complete certain labels on your income tax return. If you cannot find out your spouse’s exact taxable income, the Tax Help volunteer will help you to make a reasonable estimate.
