A warm welcome to Mr Russell Morgan, St John’s new Director of Performing Arts. He has commenced this term, just as Stage 2 of the Performing Arts Centre of Excellence is shortly to commence construction – fresh beginnings to expand on a wonderful foundation. Russell comes to St John’s from Nambour Christian College, where he taught for 15 years. For 10 of those years he was Head of their Creative and Performing Arts. Russell brings a wealth of experience in the arts including teaching, directing, producing, designing and choreographing all aspects of school performance life. Besides being a seasoned teacher, Russell brings years of experience in performing in both professional and amateur realms. He is the founding Director of Inside Out Theatre Company, a community theatre group that also runs a primary drama program teaching drama and performing productions. Russell describes himself as a passionate, dedicated, energetic teacher; a leader who strives to provide the best opportunities for students and staff. He aims to enhance our students’ academic learning, build character and foster good citizenship.
We are looking forward to benefiting from the energy and experience that Russell brings to St John’s. His vision is to grow a passion for the Arts within our students by combining excellent programs and experiences with an element of fun. “Life is a musical; many aren’t brave enough to burst into song or swing on that lamp post,” Russell said. By providing a safe environment he wants to inspire students to take risks in performance exploration, developing self-expression and showcasing talents. Given that this world has so many dark and troublesome facets Russell’s philosophy for the Arts is founded on the belief that entertainment is vital in people’s lives to bring joy and ways of healthy escapism so that hope can grow. The Arts and live entertainment - music, drama and visual art - provide real faces and rich multi-faceted colourful interactions for the world. Those experiences far outweigh those of a screen. St John’s Anglican College is well known in the community as a school of excellence. We provide outstanding learning opportunities in all academic areas for our students and our Performing Arts Centre of Excellence is no exception. It would be a pleasure to provide you with a tour of our Performing Arts Centre of Excellence. Just contact our Registrar, Janette Collins jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au to arrange a time. Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Although it feels like we barely had a winter, the seasons have changed as they do and we find ourselves looking into the bright blue sky of spring. There’s a reason spring is said by many to be their favourite month; there’s a freshness in the air, days of cloudless sky and dazzling sun, and signs of new life all around us. Years ago, when our middle child was around five years old, we kept chickens. We had a rooster and so there were many little chicks pottering around, especially in the springtime. Our daughter loved those chooks. She would race down after school, barely changed from her uniform. We would find her sitting in the middle of the pen with one chook in her lap, sometimes with another perched comfortably on her head. She named every single one of them and knew all their little idiosyncrasies. Now, we were, and still are, a happy meat eating family, so chicken (not one of our ones though) was often on the menu. I held my breath every time I served a chicken dish up to our daughter, having usually just called her from the chook pen to wash her hands and come to tea. And then one evening it happened. We were halfway through the meal when our five year old put down her fork and exclaimed, “This is chicken!” Before I could reply, our daughter continued, “Ha! How funny! Chicken (pointing out the back door)...and chicken (pointing to her meal)! They’re called the same name!” I glanced at our 12 year old son, silently begging him not to utter a word, before laughing nervously and agreeing that, yes, it was indeed funny that her meal and her pets shared the same name! In this case, ignorance really was bliss! At some point though, and I can’t remember when it was for our daughter and chicken, we come into the truth of a thing and we have the opportunity to decide what to do with our newfound information. Sometimes, we can be ignorant, either positively or negatively, about a person or situation and when the truth is revealed, it can take some time to adjust. I’ve seen many times when people realise a truth about someone else and they just can’t get past it; other times, the truth is revealed and accepted with open arms. There are times when what is shown to be true is hard to face, especially if it’s someone we love and thought we knew. But just as knowing that there really is only one thing called chicken could have devastated our daughter and made her vow never to eat it again, we can discount all the good a person has done when we learn something about them that we were previously oblivious to. The brave way out of ignorance is an acknowledgement that we are all faulty, that we all have traits and past deeds that we would rather others were ignorant of. Does our past or a truth about our character mean that all the good we’ve ever done doesn’t count? No. Rather, it reveals our human frailty and natural condition. Don’t be a chicken (see what I did there?), keep loving and standing beside others even when our ignorance is shattered and truth comes shining through.

New season and new facility for cricket club As winter winds down, local cricketers are eagerly awaiting the start of the summer cricket season. The local club, Wolston Park Centenary, with a catchment area including the Centenary suburbs, Darra, Forest Lake, Inala, Camira, Springfield and Wacol, is keen to welcome new players and those returning from previous seasons. The seniors team members start playing 17 September, with juniors to start from 7 October. Prior to this there are pre-season training activities. For juniors these will be at either Wolston Park ground, Eddie Gilbert Memorial Field, Orford Dr, Wacol or the Richlands ground, CJ Greenfield Sports Complex, Freeman Rd, Richlands. An exciting development for the club is the construction of the new lit training facility at the Richlands facility A1 Men’s Team on the Eddie Gilbert Memorial Field on a typical which will be completed before the season starts. This summer afternoon at historic Wolston Park. will allow the club to base much of the training and whole club activities in the Richlands location which includes three wickets, one of which is turf. Players can be boys or girls aged five to 16 and also older boys and men. There are fun entry level programs: the ‘In2Cricket’ skills program is available for children aged five to seven years; and the ‘T20 Blast’ for seven to 11 years. Wolston Park Centenary offers a positive, nurturing, family club environment with great facilities – including access to two turf wickets - some of the best in the competition. Support for all mums locally The Australian Breastfeeding Association is Australian’s leading authority on breastfeeding, and works at many levels, from mother to mother support to advocacy and public awareness. As a Registered Training Organisation, the Association invests in training volunteer counsellors and community educators with the most up-to-date, evidence-based breastfeeding research and information, so that they can provide practical support and information to mothers. Previously, the Sherwood Group of the Association covered the suburbs between Inala and Chelmer. Recently, the group changed its name to ‘Sherwood and Surrounds’, to reflect the widening of its area to include all of the Centenary suburbs. The group now holds discussion topic meetings at venues in both Sherwood and Riverhills, as well as meet-ups at various parks across the area. Currently, there are close to 100 members, but anyone is encouraged to visit to see what is on offer. Expectant and new Mums (regardless of how they choose to feed their babies), partners, relatives, toddlers and older children are all welcome at our meetings and events. It’s like a Mums’ Group, but with interesting discussion topics. Examples of topics include: sleep, introducing solids, weaning, alternative feeding methods, the science of breastfeeding, managing a new baby in the early days, and guest presenters also feature, covering a range of general parenting topics. Members can access a library of breastfeeding and parenting books and resources, and afterwards there’s a chance to chat with a trained breastfeeding counsellor, meet new Mums (or old friends) and have morning tea. The Sherwood and Surrounds Group is heavily involved in the local community, with projects such as the distribution of ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ stickers to venues in the local area, and accreditation of baby care/parent rooms. The Mt Ommaney Centre recently achieved five-star ratings for its three baby care rooms, which offer all parents a very comfortable venue to care for the needs of their little ones, whether it be feeding, changing, or just having some quiet time before resuming shopping. Hospital-grade, double electric breast pumps can also be hired from the group, with 50% discount for Australian Breastfeeding Association members. More information about this, along with full information about the group can be found at: www.breastfeeding.asn.au/local/qld/sherwood-and-surrounds-qld.

Locals put talents to good use Newly formed craft group, Centenary Knitters and Crocheters Circle, enjoy a coffee and a chat and put their talents to good use for others in need. Meeting every second Tuesday at SiBro Coffee at Park Village from 1.30-3pm, the friendly, industrious group have so far finished 53 blankets and just under 3 500 squares since forming in April this year. “We are a circle of ladies - men are certainly welcome - who have a passion for knitting and crocheting,” said group organiser, Inga. “The circle was started to bring like minded people together but also to give people an opportunity to help others. To feel part of a community and feel needed is such a wonderful thing. “I have heard from so many, especially elderly, that they now have a reason to knit and that they feel they can still positively contribute to the community even if they are housebound or older. To me that has been the most wonderful thing. “All our items have a blue love heart sewn into them. We are trying to show people that we care and when people see the love heart they know it is us who did it. “It has become so much more than just knitting, friendships have been formed and I have met some amazing and passionate ladies that I truly admire. “I never thought it would get to this but am very proud of the groups achievement so far. Hopefully it will continue on for many years to come. With September being Dementia Awareness month, the group are now busy knitting and crochetting ‘Twiddlemuffs’. “Twiddlemuffs are used by dementia patients. It gives them something to fiddle with, helps them calm down and also gives dexterity to their fingers. “For anyone interested in helping or coming along to the group, we are hoping to make 50 muffs that we can then donate. All muffs need to be brightly coloured. It’s great to use different textured wool and knitting stitches for a different textured feel. “Decorations to sew on the twiddlemuffs are also required, so if you have any old buttons, zips, ribbon or beads lying in the bottom of your sewing box or cupboard, we’d love to make use of them.” Residents who would like to help by knitting, crochetting, donating wool or decorations can contact Inga for the pattern and more details by calling 0437 833 454. Alternatively, find Centenary Knitters and Crocheters Circle on facebook.
CENTENARY RSL Sub-Branch h Update by Alan Worthington on
Veterans returning from conflicts have always needed support, not only for themselves, but also for their families. However, when the wounded returned from Gallipoli and other World War I battles, there was no welfare system in place to help them. Therefore, seeing the need, the veterans themselves decided to do something about it. Hence the foundation of what is now known as the ‘Returned and Service League of Australia’. The result was the first welfare organisation in Australia, setting up such things as an employment and training bureau. Naturally, as time has progressed, the methods used to provide support have changed. These changes can be seen, for example, in the provision of emergency housing for dependents whilst loved ones are receiving treatment far from home; low cost housing is provided for those who have fallen on rough times as a result of their service; and the foundation of, and sole sponsorship of, the Mates for Mates organisation which is set up to provide facilities, training and mentoring of those ex- service veterans who have been injured or otherwise suffer from the effects of their service. Additionally, the RSL has set-up ‘on-base’ Soldier Recovery Centres to assist currently serving soldiers to recover from the effects of their service. Funds obtained by the selling of badges and poppies prior to ANZAC and Remembrance Days help to provide these and other services provided by the RSL for our veterans. The underlying philosophy of the RSL is to look after your mate, a true reflection of the term ‘Mateship’. The Centenary Suburbs RSL Sub Branch practices these principals and on Saturday the 13th of August held a dinner to celebrate 100 years of the RSL supporting mates. At the dinner, the State President of the RSL, Stewart Cameron, gave a good overview of the work of the RSL and Darlene Brown, a recipient of Mates for Mates help and an entrant in the recent Invictus Games held in the USA, gave an overview of her experiences. For more information of RSL operations, contact the Centenary Suburbs RSL Sub Branch office under the Jindalee Bowls Club or call 3715 7524. Page 6 - September 2016 - The Centenary News
Sign your kids up for Little A’s this season
Thursday, 22 September Tickets $34.00 - $70.00
When you sign your kids up for Little Athletics, you’re involving them in more than just a sport. Now in its 35th year, Centenary Little Athletics offers kids the opportunity to develop leadership skills right alongside their athletics. Two members are currently in the process of training to be mentors in the club and are excited to be given more responsibility within their volunteer roles. Under 17s member, Aiden, who started out in the U8s and Jasmine, who started at the club when she was 11 years old and graduated the U17s last season, having both displayed leadership skills in the past will now be part of a team offering formal mentoring and coaching to other athletes. They will also be involved in the general running of the club with Jasmine already helping on the committee and set to be the coordinator for the club’s Tiny Tots program. “As far as athletic development and advancement, children have the opportunity to compete at relay, state and national levels if they qualify,” said Centre Manager, Lauren Stark. “Being part of Queensland Little Athletics creates lots of opportunities and pathways for young athletes can participate in. It’s been fantastic to see some of our athletes compete at school district events and other sporting events throughout the year. “We have a strong focus of fun, fitness and family. The club is also strongly supported by other community groups including Jindalee Jags and local businesses such as Athletes Foot Mt Ommaney, IFEELGOOD24/7 Middle Park, as well as our local schools including Middle Park State School and Jindalee State School. We actually just ran a MiniOlympics at Middle Park State School in conjunction with IFEELGOOD24/7 Middle Park.” The club season runs from September to March each year and meets on Friday evenings at Wongaburra Street, Jindalee from 6pm-9pm. The club also holds several special club meets through the season including Halloween dress-ups, family relays, Christmas parties and season break-up parties. Registrations are now open online at www. centenarylittleathletics.com ahead of the first meet on Friday 2 September, where pack collection will be available from 5-6pm. Enquiries on the night are also welcome. If you’d like more information on how to join, or to volunteer your time, visit www.centanarylittleathletics.com, phone Lauren on 0403 772 806 or see their facebook page ‘Centenary Little Athletics’.

Centenary Suburbs . Historical Society UPDATE BY CAROLINE HAMILTON
Jindalee - what’s in a name? We have recently added the Jindalee Street Name Register to our website which contains the origin and meaning of the 81 streets of this large suburb. Jindalee is unique in that nearly all the street names are of Aboriginal origin. Do you know that Jindalee was the first suburb in Brisbane to be fence free? The purchase of farmland began about 1960 which lead to 1416 hectares being set aside by Hooker Rex for what was to be known as the Centenary Project six suburbs and two small light industrial estates. In September 1962, the official opening of Jindalee (an Aboriginal word meaning ‘bare hills’) saw the first public transport with a bus to and from Oxley Station. Due to the size of the suburb the developer divided it into Jindalee Proper, Jindalee Chase, Jindalee Hills and Jindalee Links. The Centenary Bridge opened in October 1964 and was built by the Brisbane City Council at the developers’ expense. The Centenary Highway/Western Freeway (to Milton Road, Toowong) was eventually completed in 1969. Jindalee Street (originally named First Street) was the initial street to be established, with a home being built for the engineer so that he did not need to travel from Kenmore via Indooroopilly, along Oxley Road to Ipswich Road to work every day. Influential Queensland architects, Edwin Hayes and Campbell Scott designed the first 10 houses built in Jindalee Street with some owners still in their original purchase today. The alphabetical grouping of the names beginning with ‘C’, ‘J’ and ‘M’ is well known by long term residents. It does make interesting reading to know the original meanings, for instance Choopa - small lizard, Curragundi - place of many spiders, Gareel - leaf, Menyan - moon. Should you wish to read more, our website is www.cshsoc.org.au and the Street Name Register is located under Historical Overview - Historical Suburban Period (1962 and later) - Place Name Register - Jindalee.
CE CENTENARY
National Seniors
Update by Marlene Worthington, Branch Secretary
What a month! All the Seniors activities that were held around the Centenary Suburbs by the various organisations just for us seniors. A great big thank you to all the people behind the organising, It was very much appreciated. To all our Centenary National Seniors who attended them all, you’re going to have to watch your waistlines over the next few months in the lead up to Christmas. The first place to visit for your preparations is on Monday morning at our Steady Steps Exercise class – 9am at the Middle Park Uniting Church Hall where you can listen to gentle music while shedding the kilos under the watchful eye of our instructor, Ron. We still have another party to attend in October when we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of National Seniors Australia Ltd. I’ll tell you more about that next month. Now, what have we got on this month? Well, apart from the Exercise group which is growing quite large, we have our General Meeting on the first Tuesday in the month. This month we will have an entertainer instead of a guest speaker after our lovely morning tea and then the feet start tapping to the beat of the music. This is where you also get your newsletter which tells you about all the activities that are happening throughout the month. We have our MahJong sessions on the first two Thursdays in the month at the Mt Ommaney Library Meeting Room and then go round to the food court for lunch together. We have an evening dinner for seniors who are still in the workforce and can’t come to day time activities, that doesn’t mean that the day people can’t come to the dinner as well. This month, we are off to Kilcoy (hoping to see the Yowie that everyone is talking about) and if this trip is half as good as our last coach trip to Tewantin for a ‘Christmas in July’, it will be a fantastic day. We are also preparing for our Annual Plant Sale which is held at our October General Meeting. This is a great time to come along to the Jindalee Bowls Club on Tuesday 6th October at 9.30am where you will be met at the door by Carol and Ann, be given a two month newsletter with all our activities on, a cup of tea or coffee, and then have a browse around the plant stall. I can guarantee the bargain prices. If you are interested, please call me on 3279 1444 for more information or just turn up at the Jindalee Bowls Club at 9.30am on the first Tuesday of any month and we will make you very welcome. Kiwanian recognised by Rotary Foundation Mal Lancaster, a past president of Kiwanis Club of Brisbane, is well known around his local suburb because he is involved with so many different community organisations. Mal can often be found cooking sausages, riding a camel in the nativity scene at the local Christmas Carols, working with the veterans at his local RSL or rolling up his sleeves to help those in need in the local community. So it came as no surprise when he was made a ‘Paul Harris Fellow’ for his dedication to humanitarian work by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. He received the honour after attending a meeting of the Rotary Club of Jindalee. “The club President, Mr Nicholas Netto asked me if I would be a guest speaker and talk about the work I do as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane, and after I finished my talk they presented me with the award,” said Mal.“It is very humbling to be singled out to received this award.” Mal has been working with many other Kiwanis members to raise funds for local and national charities as well as humanitarian projects around the world. One of the biggest projects for all Kiwanians is raising US $110 Million for UNICEF to fund the Eliminate Project, a program that will eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, a deadly disease that kills many thousands of babies and women each year.
Middle Park Girl Guides want you!
Middle Park Girl Guides are seeking new members for their Ranger Unit as well as Leaders and Unit Helpers. The Ranger Unit age group is 12 to 18 years while Leaders and Unit Helpers should be over 18. Guiding is all about girls learning in a fun and challenging way. What do Guides do? Guides meet weekly during school terms. The Ranger Unit meets on Monday night from 6 to 8pm. Guiding is inclusive and girls are welcomed from all racial, ethnic, religious and socio-economic groups. Girls plan their program of activities and challenges under the guidance of their Leaders. For older girls, fun is important, but they begin to undertake more formal challenges and have a say in their program of activities. Teens focus on learning new skills and achieving goals through a structured and progressive recognition program. Meetings might include anything from surfing to party planning and from circus skills to bush survival. Leaders are encouraged to provide some opportunities for their girls outside the Unit meeting. WE ARE MOVING!
(But not too far..) To our fab new premises at 62 Ashridge Rd, Darra.
For those of you who have lost your pet and been reunited via a microchip will know its importance! Pets will be pets and occasionally they love to explore and wander the local neighbourhood while you are at work or out for the day. You’ve arrived home from work and little ‘Fido’ does not greet you in the driveway, or at the door. You wander inside and realise he is not home. Searching the house, calling out for him, but still no answer. Panic sets in as you remember what time you left for work and where could he be? Then you head out to the local streets trying to find him, only to no avail. You suddenly remember you took off his collar after bathing the other day and forgot to put it back on. He is not microchipped, without his collar and now lost. You call the local veterinary clinics to report him missing and find someone has already handed him in and he is safe and well. Thank goodness for that! Or you have already microchipped your pet and then had a call during the day to advise your precious one is safe and well at your local veterinary clinic, unaware they were even missing. You start to think, how did they even get out in the first place? You recognise and appreciate the importance of microchipping your pet! It is very difficult for veterinary clinics or scanning centres to reunite you with your beloved pet without a microchip or collar for identification. Microchips are a permanent way of identifying your pet and the quickest and most cost effective way to reunite them with you if they become lost or stolen. A microchip is as small as a grain of rice and simple for your registered veterinarian to implant under the skin. This makes them one of the easiest things you can do for your pet’s identification. Contact details of both you and your pet are kept on a secure national database allowing veterinarian clinics and scanning centres to quickly and easily reunite you with your pet. Always remember to keep your contact details updated whenever there is a change of address, phone number or pet ownership.

If you’re looking to increase your local sales, then with a combined distribution of over 44,000, and the potential readership of at least 100,000, these news magazines will provided you with a proven medium. Centenary News Winners of the Small Business of the Year award, Shingle Inn Mt Ommaney with Steve Pollard (President of the Chamber of Commerce) and Tarnya Smith MP. Recently, in conjunction with the CCIQ Centenary Chamber of Commerce, we held the Mount Ommaney Small Business Awards evening. What a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and recognise the many thousands of small businesses from across the Mount Ommaney electorate who work hard to employ locals and grow our local economy. This year’s winner was Shingle Inn Mt Ommaney and the employee of the year was Reginia from Discount Drug Store Jindalee. The voting period really demonstrated how valued our local small businesses are, including our finalists: Man & Moustache Co. in Jindalee; helloworld Mt Ommaney; Lacorvin; and A page or two in Corinda. We have nearly 4,000 small businesses in our electorate, all deserving of your support. Thank you to over 1000 local residents who voted in the awards, and the many hundreds of businesses involved in our awards for 2016. Along with the CCIQ Centenary and Districts Chamber of Commerce, we look forward to bringing the awards back, bigger and better than ever in 2017! A special mention to all the fathers out there for father’s day on Sunday 4 September! I hope you have a wonderful day.
Fill your garden with natives! Native Plants Queensland will hold their annual event at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens Auditorium on Saturday 17 September from 9am to 4pm and Sunday 18 September from 9am to 3pm. Small Native Plants for Small Gardens is the theme and will feature a delightful variety of garden styles using the amazing diversity of small native plants. Queensland’s native flowers will also be on display. There will be something for everyone as allied groups such as bird, butterfly and frog societies will integrate their displays into our garden themes. Also, revegetation advice, woodworker and botanic artists will provide interest and information. The plants sale provides an extraordinary range of native plants, from popular favourites to rare and unusual varieties, most of which will not be available from commercial nurseries. Expert advice on plant selection and care is available from the growers as well as NPQ members, and prices are very low with a range from tubestock to mature plants. Entry is only $3.00 and light refreshments and books on identification and growing native plants will be on sale. Come and enjoy this glorious display; discover and buy our unique Australian native plants.

With the arrival of spring, ladies may be enthused to preview and purchase items from the array of clothing and accessories presented by Portofino Fashions. In addition, the club offers several interest group activities such as choir, bridge, chit chat crafters and mah-jong.
