Merry Christmas Greater Springfield With Christmas just around the corner, now is a good time to remember the true spirit of the season. While many of us have had a great 2016 and are looking forward to a fun and relaxing time with family and friends, sadly there are those in our local community doing it tough this year. With so much need right in front of us, there are plenty of ways to get involved and to spread the joy. One of those ways is the Westside Community Care Christmas Appeal. See the story on page 15 for how you can get involved.

and as the College has matured so has the breadth of opportunity across both the academic and extracurricular domains. As this is the last time I will be writing an article for the Greater Springfield Times, as I am retiring after forty one years in education and seventeen as a Principal, nine of which have been at The Springfield Anglican College, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Springfield community for the significant support extended to the College and the opportunities made available to our students. When I first arrived at the College in 2007, we set as one of our key goals to be part of, and contribute to, the growth and development of Greater Springfield, which I believe we have achieved well. It is lovely to see the vision for Greater Springfield unfold in the manner it has; a strong community focus, with education at the heart of the development. As the College enters its 19th year in 2017, I believe it is in a very good place and in very good hands. The pastoral underpinning enables students to enjoy their schooling free from unnecessary barriers to learning

Page 2 - December 2016 - The Greater Springfield Times

2016 has been a very active year in the life of the College across all aspects of the College’s holistic approach to education. It has been lovely to see the progress, the growth and development of each of the students throughout the year. They are to be commended for their strong desire to make the most of the opportunities extended to them and also for the manner in which they represent themselves. It was also lovely to farewell the 2016 Year 12’s last week, a cohort that contributed greatly to the College both academically, in the Creative Arts, in Sport and as leaders of the College this year. I have no doubt they gained a great deal from their time at the College and enter the rapidly changing world beyond school as confident, mature and capable young men and women. On behalf of the College I wish all members of the Springfield community a very Merry Christmas and most enjoyable New Year. Steve Croft Head of College

Personally Speaking If you’ve been a long time reader of this column, you’ll probably have gathered over the years that I love Christmas. I love everything - the rush, the gift buying, wrapping and giving (that’s the best bit!), the cooking, the eating, the family fun, the noise - I love it all! And one of the other things I also love is the traditions of Christmas. Traditions such as certain food that, to quote my children, ‘it just isn’t Christmas without’, the routine of seeing certain family members on particular days over the festive season, the tradition I have of buying a new named tree ornament every year for our kids. So you can imagine my alarm when various family members started announcing different plans this year! Nearly everything we normally do at Christmas has been changed. I’m all for change at any other time of the year but not at Christmas! After a day or so of thinking, I set to work organising different people to come and be part of our Christmas celebrations. And as I did I realised the freedom that comes when we are forced to change! The space left vacant by absent family members was now free to be filled with other people. It has caused me to look around and see who might be without family this Christmas or be facing a hard Christmas due to a previous tragedy. And if truth be told, we’ve been saying for a few years that we wanted a more ‘giving’ Christmas as a family but didn’t really know how to extricate ourselves from the wider family Christmas statusquo. Now, we have a guilt-free opportunity to reach out to those people in our lives and fulfil a mutual need - to not be alone at Christmas time. It’s funny isn’t it? Quite often we know something needs to change, we talk about changing it, we talk about why it would be good to change it, and how good it would feel if we changed it, but for most of us, that’s where it ends. We are creatures of habit, after all, and breaking that tendency doesn’t come easy. How often have we stayed in relationships because we fear change? Or been stuck in the same job year after year, all the while constantly talking about a change in career? Or allowed people to treat us a certain way because we don’t want to rock the boat? Talk is cheap and is worth nothing without action. Often it takes an outside influence, such as other people making different plans for Christmas!, for us to change. As always though, it’s what you choose to do when life hands you a change. We can sit down and sulk, fighting the change by stubbornly refusing to do so. Or we can embrace it and celebrate new opportunities. How often we look back and are grateful for whatever it was that forced a change in our lives! So, this Christmas, why not look for new possibilities in your usual festive routine? You might just find that deviating from the norm brings all sorts of blessings, to you and to others. So from our office to your home, we wish you a merry Christmas. May it be filled with all the people and things you love!

FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y

It’s been a busy month throughout the Oxley electorate. Firstly, we were fortunate to receive a visit from the Shadow Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Shadow Assistant Minister for Innovation, Senator Deborah O’Neill. Senator O’Neill and I hosted the inaugural Oxley Community Mental Health forum with the Salvation Army with over 20 service agencies and organisations in attendance. This important gathering of mental health services personnel discussed the challenges facing the sector along with opportunities for how we can better support people suffering from mental illness. Following the forum, Senator O’Neill and I held a planning meeting with Inala Headspace and participated in a walk through of the Inala Community Health Centre. We also had the privilege of hosting the Deputy Leader and Shadow Minister for Education and Shadow Minister for Women Tanya Plibersek. Tanya and I visited Forest Lake SS and reaffirmed our commitment to needs based funding for all schools. This is a key area for our region to give every student at every school the best chance of success. Finally, the Shadow Minister for Veteran’s Affairs and Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel Amanda Rishworth joined me to host a Veteran’s Roundtable. The roundtable featured representatives from each of the electorates RSL Sub Branches including the Forest Lake RSL Sub-Branch. We have some of the most dedicated and hardworking RSL Sub Branches here in Oxley who all do a tremendous job of representing our veterans. At the roundtable we discussed strategies and programs to better support their invaluable work. This was followed by a visit to the Cementco Bowls Club, home of the Darra and District RSL Sub Branch to inspect the proposed site of a replica Anzac Cove memorial statue. Finally, I’d like to wish a big Merry Christmas to all readers and their families. It’s a wonderful time of year to spend with family and friends. If you are travelling over the holiday period, please also remember to drive safely. I look forward to speaking to you again in the New Year.

Now a Compounding Pharmacy With many members hailing from the Springfield and surrounds area, Forest Lake Dragon Boat Club is moving from strength to strength with a constant flow of new members and an influx of state-of-the-art equipment. In the last few months, the club has benefited from three separate grants, thanks to Coffee Club Forest Lake, Heritage Bank Forest Lake and The Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The funds have enabled the club to buy two new dragon boats, a double trailer, two sets of paddles, a marquee and two speaker systems for communications when training. “We are all thrilled to receive these fantastic grants. There’s no stopping us now, said club Public Relations Officer, Emma Woodward. One issue the club still faces is finding a permanent location to store its three dragon boats. They hope to find an undercover and secure location that has room to manoeuvre the boats in and out, usually only on a Saturday and Sunday when the club trains. The Lakers are willing to negotiate a fee for storing the boat and would love to hear from anyone who thinks they might be able to assist with this problem. You’ll find the Lakers training at Forest Lake most Saturdays and Sundays. Please feel free to go along and have a chat with the friendly group. The club does sometimes train on the Brisbane River at Jindalee or travel to other locations in Brisbane. Everyone is welcome to come and have a go. All equipment is supplied and three training sessions are provided for free. To find out more, please visit the club’s website at www. lakersdragons.wix.com/thelakers or their Facebook page thelakesdistrictdragonboatassociation, or send an email to lakersdragons@yahoo.com.au.

Pets and Christmas decorations

Some unusual household pet injuries can arise during the festive period. Here are five simple tips to help keep pets safe this Christmas. Christmas tree safety If you have a kitten or cat who loves to climb, make sure your Christmas tree is safely secured to the ground and cannot easily topple. Clean up any tree needles that fall from the branches of live trees as they can puncture pets’ intestines if consumed. For fake synthetic trees, make sure you stabilise individual branch sections to avoid any accidents. Christmas lights and power cords Cords should be kept neat, tidy and out of sight from pets. If your puppy or kitten is teething and chewing, be extra cautious with extension leads as they are soft and highly desirable chew objects. Ornaments It’s a good idea to inspect your ornaments for sharp objects such as pins and exposed hooks, also opt for plastic ornaments over glass to reduce the risk of breakages and your pet ingesting anything dangerous. Tinsel Cats love to play with string and tinsel presents a much shinier proposition. Tinsel and large lengths of ribbon can play havoc in the intestines once digested. If your cat is particularly interested in lengths of string, then close supervision may be required, or avoid using string and tinsel altogether. Yard decorations Yard decorations can prove just as dangerous to pets as tree decorations. Try staking the wire frames of display items into the ground with ordinary tent stakes. This will make them difficult for your pet to pull out. Avoid exciting their attention. Part of the problem may be your own excitement to show off shiny decorations. Avoid decorating the tree or house when they are present and don’t show them the objects, especially not in a playful or excited way. They may interpret this as an invitation to play with them. Have a safe and happy Christmas. Page 6 - December 2016 - The Greater Springfield Times

Slip into something ugly this Christmas Cancer Council Queensland’s Ugly Xmas Rashie is a must-have this festive season for Brisbane locals. This Christmas is about to get ugly, for a good cause! Cancer Council and KOZII Swimwear have teamed up to create the 2016 limited edition Ugly Xmas Rashie. Featuring a classic Christmas colour palette - red, green and white and, of course, a koala - it is the most festive way to incorporate sun safety into your Christmas get-up. This is the second year Queenslanders have been able to stay on trend while supporting the fight against cancer. The original Ugly Xmas Rashie kangaroo design sold out in just 48 hours in 2015. In addition to being on-trend, the rashie is made for the way Brisbane locals spend their holidays – on the beach or by the pool, building sandcastles, not snowmen. They’re super-high-quality lycra, tried and tested by Team Kozzi athletes, and rated UPF50+, keeping wearers SunSmart in a fashionable way throughout summer. Queensland is the skin cancer capital of the world - more than 3600 Queenslanders are diagnosed with melanoma each year, and it is estimated that over 324,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are treated. In the greater Brisbane region alone, around 1320 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year. Cancer Council are always looking for ways to make sure people can safely have fun in the sun – this product does just that, while raising funds for the cause. Raising funds to invest in research and prevention programs is one of our best defences against skin cancer – helping Queenslanders prevent the disease, detect it early and ensure long-term survival. It’s the must-have for summer, so put it on your own wish list or purchase rashies for your loved ones. Both the 2016 Koala design, and original Kangaroo design, are available for purchase in a range of unisex and kid’s sizes at Cancer Council’s retail store in Fortitude Valley (553 Gregory Terrace), or by emailing retailorders@cancerqld.org.au. Last year’s Ugly Xmas Rashies went like hot Xmas puddings, so don’t miss out. Once you have been in-store, Slip on your rashie and share your pics on social media with the hashtag #uglyxmasrashie to help raise awareness. For more information about the Ugly Xmas Rashie visit uglyxmasrashie.com.au. More about Cancer Council Queensland is available at cancerqld.org.au or via 13 11 20.

Don’t forget your pets this summer!

Summer is well and truly here and RSPCA Queensland is reminding pet owners to plan ahead and ensure their pets have plenty of fresh water and shelter available during the hot days ahead.

Top tips for animal lovers Cool Ideas Ensure your pet has an ample supply of shelter and water and do not tether your dog in the backyard. RSPCA Queensland’s Chief Inspector Daniel Young says, “A rope or a chain can easily become entangled in furniture or plants and that can be fatal. It’s far better to make your yard secure in the first place. We would also recommend that there are at least two to three containers of water in case one gets knocked over.” Cooling mats and making frozen treats for your pets also helps!

Ouch! The Sun! Exercising dogs in the middle of the day can be dangerous at this time of the year. Not only can they overheat very quickly, the hot bitumen can burn paw pads! The best time of day for a dog walk is sunrise and sunset. If you have a cat or dog with light pigment, consider also using pet sunscreen!

Dogs Die in Hot Cars Never leave your pet unattended in a motor vehicle or on the back of a ute! The RSPCA tested a light coloured vehicle this week and the temperature rose to 47 degrees in 12 minutes. If you added a panting dog to the equation and they would have been dead.

Some Dogs Breeds are More Susceptible to Heatstroke Flat faced dogs (Brachycephalic breeds) have shortened airways which reduces the effectiveness of panting. The weather does not even have to be particularly hot for these breeds to develop symptoms of heat stress.

Don’t forget the natives! Leave out extra containers of water to help our native wildlife keep cool. If you see an animal in distress, contact the RSPCA’s 24/7 Animal Emergency Hotline 1300 ANIMAL. RSPCA Queensland has more tips for keeping your pet cool in during the heatwave at: www.rspcaqld.org.au/what-we-do/provide-animal-care-advice/pet-tips-for-summer/chill-out. Local business SPR Pool & Spa, located at 122 Eagle St, Redbank Plains will be hosting a sausage sizzle on Saturday 17 December to raise funds for the Ipswich Koala Protection Society (IKPS). After finding a distressed and unwell koala in their backyard recently and subsequently getting it into the hands of the capable staff at IKPS, SPR Pool & Spa owners, Roger and Zoe, decided to do what they could to support this worthwhile non-profit, volunteer run organisation in the vital work they do for this Aussie icon. So why not head down to SPR Pool & Spa on Saturday 17 December, buy a sausage, learn about koalas in your backyard and see some orphaned koalas, courtesy of the Ipswich Koala Protection Society.

Over 150 Grade 12 students graduated from Woodcrest State College last month and a new group of leaders were appointed (pictured below). Springfield based Councillor David Morrison addressed the Grade 12’s on their final day with a message of congratulations and encouragement, focussing on the importance of discipline, perseverance and attitude. Well done to all local Grade 12’s who graduated; we wish you well for the future.

Rowing takes off for local students

(L-R) Josh Cool and Izak Jamieson get amongst the top racing boats at the Centenary Rowing Club with their minds firmly set on reaching the top in the sport of rowing. Izak Jamieson and Joshua Cool are the first two young men at Springfield Anglican College to take up the opportunity to learn how to row. Izak and Joshua had some reservation when they both approached their parents to ask if they would allow them to try rowing and both at first were a little dubious but now could not be happier with both of their son’s decision ‘to have a go!’ Izak’s Dad, Martin, has already been out in a safety boat and watched both boys being taught how to single scull but as the boys like doing things together have decided that they might enjoy rowing as a crew better and currently this is what they want to do. Josh Cool said that their rowing coaches wanted them to have fun and though, at this stage he believed their rowing development was only beginning, they had already rowed together in a Double Scull and a Quad and found both craft very fast. Izak who is only thirteen years old, is talented in a number of different sports including tennis and swimming and regards The Springfield Anglican College as a very good sporting school. “If it wasn’t for this school, I would never have known about the youth rowing program run by the Centenary Rowing Club and I would not have participated,” Izak said. Joshua said that rowing was the toughest sport he had been involved in but had already learned that you need to work through the various pain levels to achieve your goals. “I want to become an outstanding rower and hopefully obtain a full scholarship to attend Cambridge University in England and row in the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race.” Izak Jamieson and Josh Cool could be standing on the podium at a future Kings Cup Regatta in say 15 years time proudly holding the Kings Cup Trophy for the first time for Queensland in nearly 100 years. The last words have to go to Izak and Josh who are looking forward to convincing other TSAC students that rowing is fun and getting them involved. “Initially we both thought that rowing might not be what we were looking for but are so glad we both took up the opportunity and had a try.

THE CREATIVE heART by Jolanta Szymczyk As this busy year comes to the end, the local Hymba Yumba’s School community has many reasons to celebrate and enjoy students successes. Most recently, the school’s exhibition hosted at the venue of the local Art Co-op Gallery - Inspirations Ipswich, showcased students’ talent and brought well deserved recognition to many. During 2016 school offered students an introduction to textile and fibre art and thanks to their last achievement – a successful bid for a grant to purchase a dedicated art printing press, the school will further advance students’ creative and artistic talents by working with natural fibres through 2017. Thanks to the grant, the school will be working with the local community to create Springfield Lakes stories...stories of living in the community, stories of journeys and travels, and stories of local vegetation – all these unique aspects that make Springfield Lakes living unique and to be celebrated during 2017.

The school’s success does not finish here yet...the local school’s talent is being set for future professional and life successes through various certification pathways next year as well as other emerging learning opportunities as they become available as a response to the community’s hard work, students’ efforts and talent and dedicated teachers to guide the process of learning. And you are looking for local creative networks – don’t miss the monthly Greater Springfield Creative HeART’s group meeting or investigate options of becoming exhibiting and gallery member of Inspiration Ipswich, a local artist co-operative. New members’ enquiries are welcome! Keep in touch via www.facebook.com/GSCreativeHub/. Gallery membership enquiries: www.facebook.com/ InspirationsIpswich/

Update by Pat Quickfall

We had a Melbourne Cup day luncheon on 1 November. It was a great day with good food and lovely hats. Christine and Sussan won the best hat competition and there were plenty of winners! It was a good day which everyone enjoyed. On Wednesday 2 November, it was our meeting day with guest speaker John Frost from the Bonsai society who spoke about how to look after Bonsai’s. By all reports, the bus trip to Stanthorpe was a huge hit. Once again I did not go but am told they went to see The Law Dogs then had a lovely luncheon. It was a long day but was enjoyed by all. It was cards and games on 16 November as well as a lovely morning tea. We needed our thinking caps on for the trivia day on 23 November where all had a good day. November has been a good month and we have only a few weeks at the club before we break up for Christmas. Feel free to ring me on 3818 9343. Page 14 - December 2016 - The Greater Springfield Times

The Westside Community Care (WCC) Christmas Appeal has helped provide support for families doing it tough in the Greater Springfield Region for 19 years. With this appeal and other fundraisers, WCC raises funds to purchase food vouchers from local businesses and make up food parcels for the Christmas period and throughout the New Year. “Over the past year the opportunities we have had to support the community have multiplied over 10 times,” said Phil Cutcliffe. “In 2016, WCC have distributed around 400 sets of vouchers and close to 2,000 food parcels and 40,000 bread parcels to families throughout the Greater Springfield, Camira, Bellbird Park, Redbank Plains, Goodna, Carole Park, and Gailes Region. “Along with this, we also organise a Community Christmas Day Morning tea for families, which includes morning tea and giving each family who is doing it tough a hamper and gifts for the children.” This years event will be 9-11am Sunday 2 5 t h D e c e m b e r a t Wo o d c r e s t C o l l e g e Auditorium, 25 Nev Smith Way Springfield and will feature a one hour church service, a morning tea, 100 hampers to give away to those in need, and Christmas gifts for the children. Those who would like a hamper on the morning can book in on 3818 2915. WCC are looking to raise $20,000 for their Christmas appeal and it’s not too late to help. Almost $5,000 has already been raised with generous donations from IGA, Ipswich City Councillors, Loan Market Golf Day, and other private donors. If you can support in any way or would like to nominate a family to receive a voucher or a hamper please let WCC know. Send an email to phil@wccare.org.au or call 3818 2915.

n O s ’ t a Wh at the

Councillor’s Comments by Cr Sheila Ireland (Division 9) Ph: 3810 6231 or Div9Office@ipswich.qld.gov.au I welcome the support of my fellow councillors David Morrison and Paul Tully for the State Government to fast-track the delivery of rail services from Springfield Central to Redbank Plains. This is one of Ipswich’s leading growth suburbs, with 240 people moving to Redbank Plains in the September quarter alone. There are already provisions for more than 100 car parks at the proposed train station at School Road. This is essential infrastructure for all sectors of our community and would provide significant benefits for businesses. Just a reminder that the Division 9 office is now located at Suite C2.2 at Orion Springfield Central. Our phone number is 3470 0077. We all have a role to play in reducing rubbish in and around our community, particularly at open spaces like our beautiful lakes. Litter around the lakes has been an issue recently and it is important to remember that these items can cause significant problems during storm events, blocking drains and impacting runoff areas. McDonald’s stores at Orion Springfield Central and Springfield Lakes are offering ice cream vouchers for people who pick up recyclable rubbish. Simply present three items in-store and you will receive a turtle stamp. Three stamps will get you an ice cream as part of this cool incentive to keep our suburbs clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy. Congratulations to the Year 12 students who graduated in the last month. I wish you every success in your journey to work or further study. The library at Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve will be repurposed as a community centre when a new library is built at Orion Springfield Central. This will become another asset for our region and will boost the facilities for a booming population. I look forward to providing further updates on the future of both libraries next year. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish The Greater Springfield Times readers a merry Christmas. We have enjoyed another great year of growth in the region with many exciting developments and new additions. Next year promises more of the same, and I look forward to once again working with you and sharing our success.

Scholarship acknowledges academic excellence Academic excellence will continue to be acknowledged at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) with funding for the City of Ipswich Scholarship secured for a further three years. The move means the annual Ipswich City Council-funded bursary, which was launched in 2000 to support high-achieving undergraduate students, will be awarded until at least 2019. “We have some tremendous talent living in Ipswich and this scholarship backs our best and brightest,” Economic Development, Tourism and Digital City Committee Chairman Mayor Paul Pisasale said. “Council will continue to provide $5,000 a year for the City of Ipswich Scholarship through USQ for 2017, 2018 and 2019. “Recipients are selected by a panel of people from USQ and council and must live in the Ipswich Local Government Area. “The scholarship is open to on-campus and online students from the Ipswich and Springfield campuses of USQ.” For more information on the City of Ipswich Scholarship including a full selection criteria visit usq.edu.au/scholarships/usq/city-of-ipswich

ROTARY CLUB of Greater Springfield

UPDATE BY Chris Steinback

Last month we celebrated Rotary Foundation Month with a speakers night highlighting one of the Foundations programs in Rotary Peace Fellowships. Our speaker was Folashade Samuel (pictured, right) who is studying locally at the University of Queensland and hails from Nigeria. Fola spoke to us on her experience working in peace related fields. Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 individuals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at one of Rotary’s peace centres. In fact, we have a peace centre down the road at the University of Queensland. Fola, who has a degree in Communications and Language Art, is passionate about education for the youth, particularly young girls and infants and believes that education and access to good education reduces violent conflict, and bridges the gap of inequality within societies. She speaks three languages, loves cooking, travelling and singing. Before she was selected for the Rotary peace fellowship, Fola and husband Ola started an NGO called Initiatives For Peace, Gender Equality And Development. December is here and the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield can reflect on a very successful year of service to the community. In addition to monthly social events, trivia nights, Bunnings BBQ’s and speaker nights, the club has increased membership by over 25% since June and awarded the Paul Harris Fellow recognition to three club members in appreciation of their significant support to the community. We had a very exciting fund raising movie night where the club raised $950 to purchase specialist software to aid local girl Charlie Russo. The club has supported various community health initiatives including Rotary’s polio immunisation program, PolioPlus, Australian Rotary Health, mental health, Heart Foundation and Alzheimer’s Association. The club has continuous involvement with Rotary Youth Programs such as Youth Exchange and RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment). We are also hosting our own very popular exchange student Paul Gorbach (pictured above, left) from Bregenz, Austria. Paul is currently studying at The Springfield Anglican College. So as you can see our little club is committed to making a difference. Every day you serve in Rotary, you have the opportunity to change lives. Everything you do matters; every bit of good work makes the world better for us all. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Thursday evening at 6.30pm at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, 1 Tournament Drive, Brookwater. For enquiries, contact Club President Chris Steinback on 0411 472 684.

The Greater Springfield Times would like to wish all of our advertisers, contributors and readers a very Merry Christmas. Page 18 - December 2016 - The Greater Springfield Times

Probus Club Update

by Gwen Wise

Unbelievably this is the final update for 2016 from the Probus Club of Goodna-Springfield. Fun and games were the order of the day at the meeting in November, where we celebrated the club’s eighth birthday and also held our very own ‘Goo-Spring Cup’– which, whilst it didn’t exactly stop the Nation, was the cause of much hilarity amongst our members. Both the ladies and the gentlemen got into the spirit of the day by dressing in their race going finery and four ‘horses’ and their ‘jockeys’ took part in the race, where the result depended on the roll of a dice rather than equestrian skills, and encouragement was offered via carrots and sugar lumps. Every horse and jockey was awarded their very own miniature cup, and a big round of applause for being good sports. The venue for the November coffee morning was the Brookwater Golf Club, where we enjoyed coffee and cake overlooking the lush green golf course, and our monthly lunch date was held at the Jindalee Hotel. These activities are always popular, providing an opportunity to socialise locally at a reasonable cost. If you would like to discover first hand what a Probus Club is all about, come along to a meeting – you will be made most welcome. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month, the exception being January, when there is no meeting. Our February meeting will feature a ‘Show and Tell’, where members will be encouraged to speak for a minute or two about an object that is dear to them. Everyone has a story and sharing adds to the pleasure. Please ring Penny on 3818 7981 for further information.

Pilot program to deliver high-tech open spaces Smart technology is coming to three community venues as part of a pilot program announced recently by Ipswich City Council. The introduction of smart lighting, water, video analytics, urban furniture, solar panels and waste management are among the high-tech changes that could be introduced at Robelle Domain, North Ipswich Reserve and the Rosewood Showgrounds. Economic Development, Tourism and Digital City Committee Chairman Mayor Paul Pisasale said council was calling for private sector support to help bring the ideas to life. “We’ve identified key open space sites to the eastern, central and western parts of the city that host a combination of community, council, business, private and sports events,” he said. “In terms of smart technology we’re talking about lighting that adapts to real-time conditions and data; fully automated field irrigation; the increased use of solar power; apps and sensors that monitor bins and waste compactors; charging benches for mobile devices; improved Wi-Fi access; and on-site booking kiosks for community areas.” Cr Pisasale said the pilot program would further advance the Ipswich Smart City Blueprint, which was officially adopted in September. “The blueprint was developed as a roadmap for innovation and co-ordination,” he said. “It means we can start assessing areas of council and the community that have the greatest opportunity for innovative improvement. One of these areas includes open spaces, and that’s why we’re taking steps to revolutionise the sites and the community experiences that come with them.”

a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison

In November 2005, Ashby Close, Springfi eld was named after John and Julie Ashby who have given years of their lives to serve the community through sport and recreation. John and Julie, who continue to play and coach softball today, are long term Camira residents who were instrumental in commencing the Camira Allsports at the Camira Recreation Reserve. Camira Allsports had at least five sports under their umbrella which kept thousands of people of all ages occupied through sport for many years. Camira Allsports were the first managers of the Camira Springfield Community Centre on Old Logan Rd and were the first club to manage the Bob Gibbs Oval Club House. Bob Gibbs Oval has two rectangular fields that have lights and irrigation and are home to the Springfield Panthers Rugby League, a club house and a skate park that was designed by the local youth. John and Julie Ashby, Mayor Paul Pisasale, former Ipswich Mayor John Nugent and Cr David Morrison.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE Ipswich Art Gallery is bringing thousands of people to the city with Australia’s first ever TapeScape installation headlining a huge summer holiday program alongside the return of Construction Site. US artist and engineer Eric Lennartson created TapeScape over two weeks using 56,000m of packing tape to deliver a special play space for kids of all ages. We’re charging a small entry fee for TapeScape and Construction Site so we can continue to bring these world-class interactive attractions to Ipswich. For more information check out ipswichartgallery.qld.gov.au Orion Lagoon will be open each and every day this summer – and that includes Christmas Day! Ipswich Civic Centre will close its doors later this year to allow for maintenance work in and around the venue. The centre will close at noon on Friday 23 December before reopening at 8am on Monday 16 January. Big names confirmed for the start of next year include John Williamson, Glenn Shorrock and Brian Cadd. We’ve enjoyed another tremendous year in Ipswich and for that I thank my fellow councillors – Deputy Mayor Paul Tully, David Morrison, Kerry Silver, Kylie Stoneman, Wayne Wendt, Cheryl Bromage, Andrew Antoniolli, Charlie Pisasale, Sheila Ireland and David Pahlke. To you, our residents and visitors, thanks for your pride and passion in making Ipswich one of Australia’s leading growth areas. I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy start to 2017.
