FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y
It’s been a busy month throughout the Oxley electorate. Firstly, we were fortunate to receive a visit from the Shadow Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Shadow Assistant Minister for Innovation, Senator Deborah O’Neill. Senator O’Neill and I hosted the inaugural Oxley Community Mental Health forum with the Salvation Army with over 20 service agencies and organisations in attendance. This important gathering of mental health services personnel discussed the challenges facing the sector along with opportunities for how we can better support people suffering from mental illness. Following the forum, Senator O’Neill and I held a planning meeting with Inala Headspace and participated in a walk through of the Inala Community Health Centre. We also had the privilege of hosting the Deputy Leader and Shadow Minister for Education and Shadow Minister for Women Tanya Plibersek. Tanya and I visited Forest Lake State School and reaffirmed our commitment to needs based funding for all schools. This is a key area for our region to give every student at every school the best chance of success. Finally, the Shadow Minister for Veteran’s Affairs and Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel Amanda Rishworth joined me to host a Veteran’s Roundtable. The roundtable featured representatives from each of the electorates RSL Sub Branches including the Forest Lake RSL Sub-Branch. We have some of the most dedicated and hardworking RSL Sub Branches here in Oxley who all do a tremendous job of representing our veterans. At the roundtable, we discussed strategies and programs to better support their invaluable work. This was followed by a visit to the Cementco Bowls Club, home of the Darra and District RSL Sub Branch to inspect the proposed site of a replica ANZAC Cove memorial statue. Finally, I’d like to wish a big Merry Christmas to all readers and their families. It’s a wonderful time of year to spend with family and friends. If you are travelling over the holiday period, please also remember to drive safely. I look forward to speaking to you again in the New Year.
FOREST LAKE MEDICAL AND DENTAL CENTRE 255 Forest Lake Boulevard, Forest Lake. 1HZ 7HFKQRORJLHV 1HZ 7HFKQLTXHV %HWWHU 'HQWXUHV If you’ve been a long time reader of this column, you’ll probably have gathered over the years that I love Christmas. I love everything - the rush, the gift buying, wrapping and giving (that’s the best bit!), the cooking, the eating, the family fun, the noise - I love it all! And one of the other things I also love is the traditions of Christmas. Traditions such as certain food that, to quote my children, ‘it just isn’t Christmas without’, the routine of seeing certain family members on particular days over the festive season, the tradition I have of buying a new named tree ornament every year for our kids. So you can imagine my alarm when various family members started announcing different plans this year! Nearly everything we normally do at Christmas has been changed. I’m all for change at any other time of the year but not at Christmas! After a day or so of thinking, I set to work organising different people to come and be part of our Christmas celebrations. And as I did I realised the freedom that comes when we are forced to change! The space left vacant by absent family members was now free to be filled with other people. It has caused me to look around and see who might be without family this Christmas or be facing a hard Christmas due to a previous tragedy. And if truth be told, we’ve been saying for a few years that we wanted a more ‘giving’ Christmas as a family but didn’t really know how to extricate ourselves from the wider family Christmas statusquo. Now, we have a guilt-free opportunity to reach out to those people in our lives and fulfil a mutual need - to not be alone at Christmas time. It’s funny isn’t it? Quite often we know something needs to change, we talk about changing it, we talk about why it would be good to change it, and how good it would feel if we changed it, but for most of us, that’s where it ends. We are creatures of habit, after all, and breaking that tendency doesn’t come easy. How often have we stayed in relationships because we fear change? Or been stuck in the same job year after year, all the while constantly talking about a change in career? Or allowed people to treat us a certain way because we don’t want to rock the boat? Talk is cheap and is worth nothing without action. Often it takes an outside influence, such as other people making different plans for Christmas!, for us to change. As always though, it’s what you choose to do when life hands you a change. We can sit down and sulk, fighting the change by stubbornly refusing to do so. Or we can embrace it and celebrate new opportunities. How often we look back and are grateful for whatever it was that forced a change in our lives! So, this Christmas, why not look for new possibilities in your usual festive routine? You might just find that deviating from the norm brings all sorts of blessings, to you and to others. So from our office to your home, we wish you a merry Christmas. May it be filled with all the people and things you love!

Local club looking for volunteers Based just outside Forest Lake at Warren Ritchie Sports Complex in Carole Park, Forest Lake Junior Rugby League Football Club are interested in hearing from local residents who would be willing to volunteer in a variety of ways to the ongoing running of the club. “You don’t need to have an immediate family member registered with our club to be part of our team,” said current Club President, Farren Dicker. “We have a wide range of tasks the volunteers can be a part of and there are no expectations on what times and days they can make themselves available. There are also no age limits on our helpers.” The club, which began its playing season in 1997, promotes a family atmosphere with all funds returned to the club to benefit players, parents and patrons. With the recently improved facilities, the club has enjoyed growth in player numbers and support from the parents and community, last year fielding 17 teams. If you’re interested in volunteering, some of the areas to be involved in are: grounds keeping (mowing, brush cutting, cleaning, field marking); canteen (food preparation, serving at counter on training nights and game days, cooking); working with teams including coaching, managing, first aid officer; and working with the committee by assisting with office/paper work, liaising with teams and club members. “The club will provide financial assistance for volunteers interested in attending courses to achieve qualifications. We can also organise to pick up and drop off volunteers who don’t have their own transport.” Preparation for the 2017 season commences over December and January, if you’re keen to lend a hand, Farren can be contacted by calling 0419 131 896.

Your Teeth Your Smile by Dr Paul Holliday Do you live with a snorer? Help save their life!
Everyone has a joke about snoring. But snoring is no joke for those who have to put up with it. Snoring is the result of the airway being constricted by the soft tissues of the mouth and throat falling backwards during sleep. When this happens, the brain tries to maintain the full air flow needed by the body and so forces air through the constricted airway space faster, causing vibration of the tissues and therefore that snoring noise. It can occur in both children and adults. It may only be the tip of the deadly and loud iceberg though. The danger is that if the blockage becomes total then the brain is starved of oxygen and to survive, forces you to jolt awake and gasp a breath of air. This can happen many times in a night and is called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). This often leads to increased blood pressure and may cause heart problems or stroke. You most certainly will be grumpy at times and feel lethargic during the day. Medical research is showing OSA can lead to lots of insidious and deadly problems that ultimately shorten your life span. If your child suffers from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea then they may have growth and development problems especially with their teeth, jaws and mouth or nose. Often this lack of air at night can make children irritable and have difficulty concentrating in school. It is something you should get looked at as soon as you see them having difficulty breathing. What can be done? The first action to take is to see your doctor for a consultation to diagnose the severity and refer you to one of the local sleep assessment clinics. The important thing is to see what kind of apnoea you or your child has (there are several types). This involves being monitored while you are asleep to see how many episodes of apnoea and what kind of apnoea is present. The treatment usually involves CPAP (which means continuous positive airway pressure). This is a machine that forces air into your airway. Many people find this uncomfortable and do not wear the CPAP every night. A simple oral appliance can help in these cases. You can find more information here – www.Somnomed.com.au At Lakedental we are using the latest Somnodent MAS appliance that is proving successful and is being well accepted.

We are located in Grand Boulevard Shopping Centre Local to the area for the last 45 years, and living in Ellen Grove since 1980, Jenny Stedman recently won two gold medals with her horse Dolce. Competing in dressage competitions for the last three years, 73 year old Jenny is no stranger to the saddle, having ridden since the age of nine. As part of the Jupiter’s Casino Pan Pacific Masters Games, an equestrian event is held every other year at Mudgeeraba, with Jenny winning gold in the over 70’s Novice Dressage section. “I was thrilled to win and feel very proud of my little horse for doing so well, said Jenny. “As a standardbred, he was bred and trained to race in harness races as a pacer which makes this achievement in dressage all the greater. The discipline requires quite different abilities from those of a pacer. Jenny and Dolce are already looking forward to the season starting again in March, with competitions held throughout winter.
Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, On Sat 30th November, at Forest Lake shops, I put my shopping in the car and returned the trolley to the bay opposite Coffee Club. When I got home I realised I had left my handbag hanging on the trolley, quickly drove back to check, trolley was still there but no handbag. My heart sank, my whole world operates from that handbag. I ran frantically from shop to shop to check if it had been handed in, no luck. Finally I called security and he said it had been handed in and when I checked, all was intact including money I had just withdrawn. I just wanted to say thank you to the person who found and handed in my handbag and to the two policemen who saw my distress and stopped to help. Also to my friends who helped me search, God answered my prayers that day. It is wonderful to know we live in a community that takes care of each other. Once again many thanks from a grateful pensioner. Name and address withheld.

Evening g & Saturdayy appointments available From humble beginnings over 15 years ago, when father and son team David and Simon Armstrong were first appointed as Owner-Managers of BOQ Forest Lake, some amazing transformations have evolved not only within the Branch but also in the Forest Lake community. Once regarded as the ‘wild’ west of Brisbane with acres and acres of undeveloped land, Forest Lake has grown from a few hundred homes to in excess of 12,000 homes and 30,000 residents both in Forest Lake and neighbouring suburbs including Durack, Doolandella, Heathwood and now Pallara. BOQ Forest Lake has also enjoyed similar growth with staff numbers increasing from three to nine people over the last 15 years. With what started out as a State-owned Bank more than 140 years ago, BOQ today is represented with branches in every State and Territory in Australia. The Owner-Managed concept is unique within the Banking Industry in Australia and the unrivalled success of such a model has been taken to new heights by David and Simon. This was evidenced at the recent BOQ National Sales Conference held in Brisbane which saw the Branch accept the highly sought after title of No 1 Owner-Managed Branch for 2016. Interestingly, BOQ Forest Lake also received this title in 2011, 2012 and 2015. Success such as this does not come just from the efforts of David and Simon; their support staff of Peter, Chrissy, Shauna, Angela, Jan, Michelle and Sarah make up a formidable team of professional bankers. In fact, the entire team at BOQ Forest Lake can boast of their 90+ years of BOQ experience of which 62 of these years have been acquired while working within the Forest Lake Branch. David and Simon have a special passion and drive for their Forest Lake Branch and the local community in general. Success in 2011, 2012, 2015 and now again in 2016 has been the result of a team of highly experienced and committed individuals. Team Forest Lake would like to take this opportunity to thank local residents and business owners who have opened their arms to acknowledge that the OwnerManaged model offers something special that other financial institutions are not able to match.

Slip into something ugly this Christmas Cancer Council Queensland’s Ugly Xmas Rashie is a must-have this festive season for Brisbane locals. This Christmas is about to get ugly, for a good cause! Cancer Council and KOZII Swimwear have teamed up to create the 2016 limited edition Ugly Xmas Rashie. Featuring a classic Christmas colour palette - red, green and white and, of course, a koala - it is the most festive way to incorporate sun safety into your Christmas get-up. This is the second year Queenslanders have been able to stay on trend while supporting the fight against cancer. The original Ugly Xmas Rashie kangaroo design sold out in just 48 hours in 2015. In addition to being on-trend, the rashie is made for the way Brisbane locals spend their holidays – on the beach or by the pool, building sandcastles, not snowmen. They’re super-high-quality lycra, tried and tested by Team Kozzi athletes, and rated UPF50+, keeping wearers SunSmart in a fashionable way throughout summer. Queensland is the skin cancer capital of the world - more than 3600 Queenslanders are diagnosed with melanoma each year, and it is estimated that over 324,000 nonmelanoma skin cancers are treated. In the greater Brisbane region alone, around 1320 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year. Cancer Council are always looking for ways to make sure people can safely have fun in the sun – this product does just that, while raising funds for the cause. Raising funds to invest in research and prevention programs is one of our best defences against skin cancer – helping Queenslanders prevent the disease, detect it early and ensure longterm survival. It’s the must-have for summer, so put it on your own wish list or purchase rashies for your loved ones. Both the 2016 Koala design, and original Kangaroo design, are available for purchase in a range of unisex and kid’s sizes at Cancer Council’s retail store in Fortitude Valley (553 Gregory Terrace), or by emailing retailorders@cancerqld.org.au. Last year’s Ugly Xmas Rashies went like hot Xmas puddings, so don’t miss out. Once you have been in-store, Slip on your rashie and share your pics on social media with the hashtag #uglyxmasrashie to help raise awareness. For more information about the Ugly Xmas Rashie visit uglyxmasrashie.com.au. More about Cancer Council Queensland is available at cancerqld.org.au or via 13 11 20.
FROM THE DESK OF

Its important we acknowledge the significance of Remembrance Day. I would like to thank President, Mr Stuart Bradley, and members of the Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch for their invitation to attend the yearly Remembrance Day Commemoration Service at the Forest Lake Amphitheatre on Friday 11 November to lay a wreath. It was an honour to attend and pay tribute alongside other members of the Forest Lake community. Together we stood silent for one minute on the 11th hour and paid our respects and mourned the loss of thousands of men and women - who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflict. I was moved to see students from local schools join us on the day and especially those students who’s mothers or fathers are currently serving in our armed forces. November was a very busy month for me! Council recommenced and I made sure that I tabled the rates and water petitions at Council. I would like to thank everyone who signed the petition in support of keeping our rates down and reversing the water remission changes. Well done! Forest Lake National Seniors Group, The Lake News and the many 100s of residents who spoke out in support of our pensioners. And lastly, I’d like to thank you – the readers for taking the time to visit me at the ward office and mobile offices. I would also like to congratulate the Grand Avenue State School P&C for hosting a brilliant Twilight market on the 18 November. With more than 80 stalls on the night, this is a tribute to their efforts and work in the community. Thank you to everyone who has made this month memorable and if you need assistance please do not hesitate to contact my friendly staff at the Forest Lake Ward office 3407 1211. Forest Lake Dragon Boat Club is moving from strength to strength with a constant flow of new members and an influx of state-of-the-art equipment. In the last few months, the club has benefited from three separate grants, thanks to Coffee Club Forest Lake, Heritage Bank Forest Lake and The Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The funds have enabled the club to buy two new dragon boats, a double trailer, two sets of paddles, a marquee and two speaker systems for communications when training. “We are all thrilled to receive these fantastic grants. There’s no stopping us now,” said club Public Relations Officer, Emma Woodward. One issue the club still faces is finding a permanent location to store its three dragon boats. They hope to find an undercover and secure location that has room to manoeuvre the boats in and out, usually only on a Saturday and Sunday when the club trains. The Lakers are willing to negotiate a fee for storing the boat and would love to hear from anyone who thinks they might be able to assist with this problem. You’ll find the Lakers training on the lake most Saturdays and Sundays. Please feel free to go along and have a chat with the friendly group. The club does sometimes train on the Brisbane River at Jindalee or travel to other locations in Brisbane. Everyone is welcome to come and have a go. All equipment is supplied and three training sessions are provided for free. Finance Corner
WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.
Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues
The other day I heard about a case of someone carrying on a business but because the turnover was less than $20,000, it was understood that nothing had to be declared for tax. Accordingly, the net income was assumed to be entirely tax free. I wish that was the case! Sadly, this person is confusing the rules relating to the $20,000 turnover threshold with one of the tests relating to non-commercial losses. Basically, if you are an individual carrying on a business that has a turnover of less than $20,000 (net of GST), but which sustains a loss, generally you cannot offset such loss against your other income, for example, from employment. This is not the same as saying that a sideline income of less than $20,000 is non-taxable. Income from hobbies is not assessable, nor are losses deductible. Income earned from the carrying on of a business is taxable and losses are deductible, but subject to the above statutory threshold rule. Basically, if your turnover exceeds $20,000, the ATO views you as carrying on a bona fide business and any losses sustained can be offset against other income. There are other instances where the losses may be offset notwithstanding a low turnover, for example, profits in three of the past five years, threshold values being met for land and buildings and other assets used in the earning of the business income. The test of whether you are carrying on a business or hobby is paramount...the fact that turnover is less than $20,000 is not necessarily any indication that you are carrying on a hobby (not taxable) as distinct from a business. The types of attributes that may determine a business include, for example, intention to make a profit, regularity of activity, regular advertising for business, activities organised in a business-like manner etc. As for many things with tax, the distinction can sometimes be subjective, but generally the conclusion will be quite clear. Once it has been established you are carrying on a business, then the deductibility of any losses against other income is subject to the $20,000 turnover rule mentioned above. Note, the loss does not disappear but is deferred for potential offset in the future. Be careful...this is a classic case where a little knowledge, rather than the full facts, can be dangerous!
Lighthouse lights up for Christmas Saturday 10th December is set to be a memorable night in Forest Lake with the Allstars Performing Arts Christmas Spectacular starting the night off at 5pm with fun for the whole family to enjoy. At the conclusion of the Christmas Spectacular at 7pm, the Lighthouse Events Centre, 65 Woogaroo Street, will turn into a colourful lights display with colour wash lights, moving laser images of stars and snowflakes, as well as twinkling star lights in all the windows and giant festoon fairy lights under the verandas that will change colour. There will also be sound activated lights for the kids to have fun with. With the cafe open, there will be plenty of food and drinks to buy including burgers, fish and chips, toasted sandwiches as well as tea and coffee and cold drinks. Santa will be available for children to visit and have photos taken with him while Christmas music accompanies the festive light displays. Sponsored by Ray White Forest Lake, Hosanna Church Brisbane and Spectacular Event Management, the lights display is free to attend after the ticketed Christmas Spectacular end of year concert featuring David Hamilton and his puppets. Some unusual household pet injuries can arise during the festive period. Here are five simple tips to help keep pets safe this Christmas. Christmas tree safety If you have a kitten or cat who loves to climb, make sure your Christmas tree is safely secured to the ground and cannot easily topple. Clean up any tree needles that fall from the branches of live trees as they can puncture pets’ intestines if consumed. For fake synthetic trees, make sure you stabilise individual branch sections to avoid any accidents. Christmas lights and power cords Cords should be kept neat, tidy and out of sight from pets. If your puppy or kitten is teething and chewing, be extra cautious with extension leads as they are soft and highly desirable chew objects. Ornaments It’s a good idea to inspect your ornaments for sharp objects such as pins and exposed hooks, also opt for plastic ornaments over glass to reduce the risk of breakages and your pet ingesting anything dangerous. Tinsel Cats love to play with string and tinsel presents a much shinier proposition. Tinsel and large lengths of ribbon can play havoc in the intestines once digested. If your cat is particularly interested in lengths of string, then close supervision may be required, or avoid using string and tinsel altogether. Yard decorations Yard decorations can prove just as dangerous to pets as tree decorations. Try staking the wire frames of display items into the ground with ordinary tent stakes. This will make them difficult for your pet to pull out. Avoid exciting their attention. Part of the problem may be your own excitement to show off shiny decorations. Avoid decorating the tree or house when they are present and don’t show them the objects, especially not in a playful or excited way. They may interpret this as an invitation to play with them. Have a safe and happy Christmas.
Broaden your VIEW this Christmas
VIEW Club members Lyn Holmes and Gaynor Hooper prepare for the annual gift wrapping fund raiser. In the absence of a Forest Lake VIEW Club, Centenary Evening VIEW Club extends a warm invitation to local residents interested in attending their active and friendly club. Centenary Evening VIEW Club members are busy preparing for one of their major fund raising events for the year, wrapping Christmas gifts at Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre for customers. The ladies take great pride in their work and though the shopping centre provides the paper and some ribbons, extras such as fancy bows and gift tags are hand made by VIEW members. So far almost 1,000 bows have been made and workshops have been conducted to add to this collection as well as covering boxes for difficult to wrap goods and, of course, handmade gift tags to add a finishing touch. Look for the VIEW ladies at Mt Ommaney from Thursday 8 December right up to 5 pm on Christmas Eve. Cost of the wrapping is a gold coin donation for each parcel, with all money raised going to the Smith Family Learning for Life program which helps in the education of disadvantaged Australian children. The next dinner meeting of Centenary Evening VIEW Club will be on Monday 12 December, 6.30pm for 7pm. Meetings are held at McLeod Country Golf Club, 61 Gertrude McLeod Cres, Middle Park, cost is $35 and bookings are essential. As this is the last meeting of the year there will be a Christmas theme and some fun entertainment. Christmas hampers will be raffled and there will be several lucky door prizes. There will also be a bring and buy stall so bring along goodies to sell or maybe find that little Christmas gift to buy. If you would like to attend or require more information, email centenaryeveview@gmail.com or ring Di 3202 9759 by noon Friday 9 December.

your singing voice Santa Claus is Coming to Town You better watch out You better not cry Better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town He’s making a list And checking it twice; He’s gonna find out Who’s naughty or nice Santa Claus is coming to town
Silent Night Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright Round yon Virgin Mother and Child Holy Infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ, the Saviour is born Christ, the Saviour is born Silent night, holy night Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
He sees you when you’re sleeping He knows when you’re awake He knows if you’ve been bad or good So be good for goodness sake! You better watch out! You better not cry You better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town
The First Noel The First Noel, the Angels did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!
Santa Claus is coming Santa Claus is coming Santa Claus is coming to town
They looked up and saw a star Shining in the East beyond them far And to the earth it gave great light And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
And by the light of that same star Three Wise men came from country far To seek for a King was their intent And to follow the star wherever it went. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, (reindeer) Had a very shiny nose. (like a light bulb) And if you ever saw it, (saw it) You would even say it glows. (like a flashlight) All of the other reindeer, (reindeer) Used to laugh and call him names. (like Pinocchio) They never let poor Rudolph, (Rudolph) Join in any reindeer games. (like Monopoly)
This star drew nigh to the northwest O’er Bethlehem it took its rest And there it did both Pause and stay Right o’er the place where Jesus lay. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!
Then one foggy Christmas eve, Santa came to stay, (ho ho ho) “Rudolph with your nose so bright, Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then entered in those Wise men three Full reverently upon their knee And offered there in His presence Their gold and myrrh and frankincense. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!
Then how the reindeer loved him, (loved him) As they shouted out with glee! (Yippee) “Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, (reindeer) You’ll go down in history.”
Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord That hath made Heaven and earth of nought And with his blood mankind has bought. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel

The Holy City Last night I lay asleeping There came a dream so fair, I stood in old Jerusalem Beside the temple there I heard the children singing And ever as they sang, Methought the voice of Angels From Heaven in answer rang “Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Lift up you gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna to your King!” And then methought my dream was chang’d The streets no longer rang Hush’d were the glad Hosannas The little children sang The sun grew dark with mystery, The morn was cold and chill As the shadow of a cross arose Upon a lonely hill “Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Hark! How the Angels sing, Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna to your King!” And once again the scene was chang’d New earth there seem’d to be, I saw the Holy City, beside the tideless sea The light of god was on its streets The gates were open wide, And all who would might enter And no one was denied. No need of moon or stars by night, Or sun to shine by day, It was the new Jerusalem That would not pass away “Jerusalem! Jerusalem Sing for the night is o’er Hosanna in the highest Hosanna for evermore!”
We Wish you a Merry Christmas We wish you a merry Christmas We wish you a merry Christmas We wish you a merry Christmas And a Happy New Year. Good tidings we bring To you and your kin Good tidings for Christmas And a happy New Year. (Repeat)
Away in a Manger Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay, Close by me forever, and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children, in Thy tender care And take us to heaven, to live with thee there. “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go...” are the opening words to one of the more popular Christmas Carols and it is true at the moment. Wherever we look Christmas lights, Christmas parties, decorations in the department stores, advertising on television and in the press are all telling us “It’s beginning to look like Christmas”. Not forgetting, our letter boxes are filled with so many different Christmas catalogues. How many gifts have you already crossed off your shopping list? Why are battery operated toys so expensive and all state ‘batteries not included’. I’m thinking of giving batteries for a present with a note saying ‘toys not included’. When making up your list of gifts don’t forget to include a gift that keeps on giving. I’m talking about a productive pot plant. There are potted plants to suit every size and pocket both in flowers, vegetables, chillies, cherry tomatoes or even herbs. Now before we get carried away with another festive season, parties and holidays later in the month, let’s not forget about our garden as it is now summer, the hottest season of the year. Topping up the mulch, especially if you are going on holidays, is important in assisting the moisture be maintained longer for all plants as they grow throughout the hot summer days. Remember not to place the mulch up against the plant stems. Why not add some water crystals? Water deeply as this will encourage the roots to go further into the soil to find the moisture. Water in the cool of the morning or evening but avoid watering disease-susceptible plants at night. Vegetable growing can seem a bit daunting for beginners, so one easy way to get started, especially if space is limited, is by producing a crop of lettuce in a styrofoam box. Acquire a good-sized styrofoam box and check to make sure it has some holes for drainage. If it doesn’t, use something like a large screwdriver to punch a few holes through the base. Next, fill the box with a good quality potting mix, and plant some lettuce seedlings. Lettuce need plenty of nitrogen to promote healthy growth so feed them with a liquid plant food or a fish emulsion based fertilizer. You will soon be picking fresh lettuce for your salads. This month, our meeting will be held in the new hall at the Uniting Church. This will be our Christmas break-up party and I hope you can enjoy the lunch with us. Our Patron, Noel Burdette will be joining us. Thank you to Susannah and the team at The Lake News for their support during 2016. We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!
Next meeting Tuesday, 7 February at 9.30 for a 10am start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0402 002 143.

RICHLANDS SCOUT
GROUP UPDATE BY Tania McLaughl in
Richlands-Forest Lake Joey Scouts started off November with a fun Halloween party, with dress ups, games and treats. We then spent some time exploring the Lake at Forest Lake, in search of bugs, beetles and other crawlies, before starting some meetings around International Scouting. The Joeys were happy to receive some mail from our penpals in a Beaver Colony (Scouts) in the UK, and to send some mail back to them. We also learned about Guy Fawkes Day. Meanwhile, our Cub Scouts spent a night at Oyster Point Scout Den learning to work together as a team. Early next morning, we headed off to the Redcliffe Aerodrome ready for a morning of fun and excitement completing our Level 2 Flight badges. The Cub Scouts (and Leaders) were all very excited to fly with Pilot Paul in his small passenger plane before constructing their own model planes and learning all about the different parts of a plane and what they do. The next couple of weeks were spent finishing off the Cubs individual badge work presentations before a night of ice skating with the Scouts. Our Scouts got right back to basics this month as we have a number of new Scouts. Cam from Cam’s Cords was kind enough to come and visit to show us a small part of his very large stock of cord and ropes. We then learned about the different sizes, types and uses of ropes, care and repair of ropes, how to make rope out of grass and then knotting our own survival bracelets. Next step was learning a few of the basic knots, and some boating knots. The Scouts had a great weekend relaxing at a camp at Samford, and learning a little bit of First Aid, which was the final piece needed to achieve Pioneer Water Activities Target.
Algester Update As the year draws to a close, I’ve had the opportunity to visit a number of our local schools and have been so impressed with their achievements in 2016. Both Forest Lake State High School and St John’s Anglican College are pushing ahead with their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) agenda that I am confident will see young people in this area well prepared for the jobs of the future. I was delighted to support the inaugural meeting of the Forest Lake Business Growth Club held at the Salvation Army in November. The number of businesses interested in exploring collaboration is heartening and the audience were treated to a great presentation by Annette Densham from Publicity Genie on the value of working together. Event organiser, Lynne Spalding is hoping to hold monthly events and already has the next one booked in for December. Any local businesses who would like more information can contact my office on 3737 2110. With the festive season fast approaching, I would like to wish all residents and community groups a safe and happy Christmas and I look forward to continuing to work with you in 2017. My office will be closed for two weeks from 23 December, re-opening on Monday 9 January.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The Forest Lake Social Golf Club held the fourth and final round of the Club Championships at the Gailes Golf Club on the 6th November with a record 38 players attending. Our first groups got away at 6am from both the first and tenth tees, so we were able to complete the round before the heat of the day kicked in. Gailes was in fabulous condition with the greens probably the best we have played all year. Congratulations to the Gailes green staff for maintaining the course in such great condition during a long dry spell. Forest Lake Christmas Carols Hot weather and the end of the school year means it’s almost time to let Christmas celebrations start. Here in Forest Lake that means the wonderful Forest Lake Community Christmas Carols at St John’s oval is just around the corner. This year, it’s celebrated on Sunday, December 4. As usual, the event will highlight the many talents of our multicultural community. Families will also enjoy fireworks and perhaps even a visit from Santa Claus himself. It’s a popular event in the local calendar - more than 5000 people attended last year - and Forest Lake Lions do a terrific job in supporting it. FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update
by Stuart Bradley ley y
Representatives of the Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch recently gathered at their new banner promoting Remembrance Day 2016. With assistance from local Brisbane City Councillor, Charles Strunk, the two highly visible banners on Forest Lake Boulevard ensured one and all would remember to stop and pause on November 11th at 11.00am. Covering five eras of conflict, and representing the three arms of the Australian Defence Force, these five men, Past President George Churchward (WWll Pacific), Vic Jones (Korea) Pictured L to R: George Churchward (WWll Pacific), Vic Jones (Korea), S Kevin Dinsdale (Malaya), Stuart Bradley (Viet Kevin Dinsdale (Malaya), President Stuart Bradley (Viet Nam), Nam), Asveen Chand (East Timor & Afghanistan). and Treasurer Asveen Chand (East Timor & Afghanistan) proudly stand together in their support of activities seeking to assist veterans of all conflicts, whether they are members of the RSL or not. “We exist for the serving and ex-service community,” President Stuart Bradley said. “And as we manned the stalls in Algester, Richlands, Inala and Forest Lake, we heard many harrowing stories of suffering and hardship both during conflict and on return to Australia. We may be seen as ‘just’ badges sellers raising money for our activities but it is more than that. We count it a privilege to be able to lend a listening ear.” Local war widow Emmy Dale (left) showing her handknitted poppies to Mrs Lucy Bradley recently. Emmy donates these poppies to the Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch as her way of supporting the work of the RSL. Not resting on her laurels, Emmy is busy getting her next batch of poppies ready for sale around ANZAC day, 2017. EST LA E

Believe it or not, it’s not that long before Rugby Union will be starting up again at the Forest Lake Sports R U G B Y Fields. The school-based participation program Rookies2Reds has made a welcome expansion into the local area, including Grand Avenue and Oxley State schools. This program offers students the chance to be coached by Reds players in the basics of Rugby Union. It is a great foundation from which to sign up with the Wasps for the season ahead and I will be on hand at the completion of the program to answer any questions parents and students may have about joining our team at Forest Lake. The club was privileged to have Cr Charles Strunk with us to chair our AGM. Reports showed a positive year of new growth built on a strong foundation of dedicated volunteers and community history. With the club already taking enquiries for registration, 2017 is looking to fulfil its promise of continued renewal and development. Anyone who would like to join us to play or to volunteer for a great local organisation, please don’t hesitate to contact us via www.forestlakewasps.com.au. All registration will be online next year and we will let the community know via our Facebook page when these open and when the Getting Started vouchers come out, both in January. We will be having another Come ‘n Try Day during our recruitment drive in February. Please mark your diaries now for Saturday 11 February, from 11am-3pm. You can visit us anytime that day to enjoy a bouncy castle, fairy floss, sausage sizzle and, of course, rugby! We can answer any questions and help you buy gear etc, all at our Forest Lake Sporting Fields, 90 College Avenue Forest Lake. Training will commence for the season the week of 27 February. The Wasps are particularly calling for businesses to sponsor our team in 2017. Wherever possible we like to support small and local, to give the benefit of our exposure to the community. Through sponsorship you can have a reach that is local, regional, city and state wide as your logo and/or offers and promotions feature on our jerseys, newsletters, FB, website, emails, at family and community events, on our water tanks and field banners. Your name and business can reach Forest Lake, Western Suburbs and beyond through our families, supporters and other users of the sports fields, out to other teams and clubs and through fundraising opportunities at Ballymore and Suncorp Stadiums. Most importantly though, by helping to keep our fees down, you help more kids play sport locally and one day realise their dreams! We are also on the lookout for ‘in kind’ sponsorship for printing and one-off sponsorship or donations for fundraising and events. If you are interested, comment here or please contact our Treasurer Veronica Stickley via veronicastickley@hotmail.com or on 0402 826 113. The Wasps would like to take this opportunity to thank the Forest Lake community for their support and wish you all a wonderful festive season. Page 30 - December 2016 - The Lake News

Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach
Last month was an enjoyable trip to the Beenleigh Rum Distillery. After some ‘controlled sampling’ it was off for a tasty lunch at Harrigans. The day dawned for the last general meeting of the year and what a day it turned out to be! Unfortunately a small group of Probians got stuck in the lift at the Forest Lake Hall in College Avenue. Concern increased for the people inside as the safety precautions turned out to be non-operational. Thank goodness for the Fire & Rescue men who saved the day. These firemen were absolutely magnificent in dismantling the problem and freeing the people from their claustrophobic space. Our very special thanks and gratitude has to go to the Fire Department. From all the Probians, thank you so much, gentlemen, for being saving heroes! Our final monthly speakers for the year were Brian Andrew and Ellie. Their topic was I Grow in Grandad’s Garden, a book they wrote for children which takes the latter on a personal development journey. It is really aimed at early learners. The couple did emphasise that the core values espoused in the book of courage, generosity, gratitude and forgiveness is applicable to all age groups. A garden is used as a symbol to simplify and explain complex concepts at a level understood and acceptable by young folk. The relevance of a situation is compared to a garden where, if there are negative thoughts that create problems, these have to be pulled out of one’s head like pulling weeds out of the garden. One plants flowers in a garden with happy thoughts and happy thoughts and good memories are like bubbles in the heart. It is easy for children to create and accept pictorial images for imagination is powerful and this is used to get messages across. Andrew explained the background to writing the book which has now gone global. The book also contains interactive questions to get parents/grandparents closer to the children. It also helps to develop emotional resilience. These core values are not new and were once-upon-a-time used by all grandparents to install these in the youth, before the onset of the culture of entitlement of the twenty - first century has taken hold. Janet passed the vote of thanks. The Probus Club of Forest Lake meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 10am in the Forest Lake Hall in College Avenue. Retirees and semi-retirees do join us at our next meeting which will be on the 10th January 2017 and come and enjoy fun, fellowship and a scrumptious morning tea. For more details, contact Shirley our Membership officer on 3879 9421 or President John on 3372 1270. Our Club would also like to take this opportunity to wish all businesses and residents of this beautiful suburb of Forest Lake a safe and happy Christmas as well as compliments of the season. Please take care and stay safe.

What’s your favourite thing about Christmas? Some of my favourite things are eating white Christmas, watching cricket (my wife never really gets this one!) and having some time off over the holiday season. But, the supreme thing about Christmas is not a thing at all – it’s the person of Jesus Christ! We so often get caught up in the subsidiary elements of Christmas without seeing the primary reason for the season. So many parts of Christmas point to the Nativity but we never get around to seeing the One to whom they point – candy canes, gift giving, carols are all meant to point us to the child in the manger whom heaven called the Prince of Peace. To not take some time to see Him is a bit like going to a birthday party, enjoying the food, meeting other guests, having a good time but never stopping to acknowledge the one celebrating the birthday. But, even if you don’t share the Christian faith, the message of Christmas is one worthy of your attention. It is a message of humility, family, peace, sacrifice, joy, hope, community and love. Consider how God chose to announce the birth of Christ not to a king or the wealthy or elite but to poor shepherds. It speaks of the dignity of all humanity. The message of Christmas is summed up by the angels: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those on whom His favour rests.” (Luke 2:14) The true message of Christmas is that all-important word - peace. Christmas reminds us of God’s desire that we live at peace with one another and peace with Him. The most remarkable thing about this Christmas peace is that, though we didn’t deserve it, God initiated this peace by sending Jesus. On the evening of December 4, the Forest Lake community will join together to celebrate Christmas at the annual carols event. Come along and celebrate the most joyous event in history - bring your family, bring your neighbours. Most of all, consider what the Christmas message might mean for you. Throughout the month of December, the Churches of Forest Lake will be celebrating Christmas. Drop in and celebrate it with us. On behalf of the Churches of Forest Lake, and my family, my prayer is that you enjoy a blessed Christmas filled with joy and a peaceful and prosperous 2017.

Monthly Update

Melbourne Cup comes around only once a year and this year 102 members and friends of The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club gathered at The Blue Fin Fishing Club, Inala for their Melbourne Cup function. The Blue Fin put on a wonderful mixed seafood and hot/cold buffet. Everyone enjoyed the day and we had a few lucky winners to boot. The day after Melbourne Cup, 53 members boarded our coach for the November outing to Twin Towns Services Club for the Piano Man show and lunch. The packed auditorium was testimony to a fabulous show, followed by a very enjoyable lunch. With everyone fed and watered and some good wins on the pokies, it was time to depart and make our way back up the track to Forest Lake. This month, the Club’s ‘Extra Activity‘ was held at the Forest Lake Hotel on November 9th for a lunch with 25 members attending. As usual, there was a lot of good humour and in particular, tall stories from the Melbourne Cup event, and good memories from the trip to Twin Towns. The Club President, Leonie Ayling, extends her thanks to the committee, members and supporters of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club for all their help throughout the year. In addition, she would like to thank the Lions Richlands Club, Heritage Community Branch and all of our local Council, State and Federal Members of Parliament for their continuing support. The contributions from all of those people and organisations help to make this club one of the strongest local community clubs in the Forest Lake area. We would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of The Lake News readers a sleigh full of wishes and dreams come true, and may the spirit of the Christmas season fill you all with joy. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Thursday of the month (January, February, March & April only) at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. New members are most welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or 0466 377 618 to register your interest, or send an email to fl50plusc@gmail.com. Date claimers for the next three meetings are Thursday 19th January, Thursday 16th February and Thursday 16th March. Please note the change of meeting day for these months.
