with Susannah Friis A certain soft drink’s Christmas slogan, to go with their iconic truck’s first foray onto Australian soil, is #itfeelsgoodtogive. As we round the corner into all things red, green and white and cover our houses, inside and out with lights and tinsel, the giving vibe is palpable in the air. Christmas is the season of giving and giving comes with its own unique paradox - do we give because we genuinely want to make others happy or do we give because it makes us feel so good? It’s a scientific fact that giving and doing good for others benefits us, so how can we separate our desire to help and our desire to feel good? I think the buzz we get from giving to others is a wonderful by-product of generosity - a sort of selfless/selfish combination where everyone wins. And I think that by-product is there for a reason. Our brains aren’t naturally wired to keep doing things that don’t make us feel good. It’s the same mechanism in us that means we learn as children not to touch hot things or go near a snarling dog. We usually don’t repeat behaviour that has an adverse outcome. In some cases we do persist with behaviour that is not beneficial to us but there is usually some ‘pay-off’ that seems good to us, regardless of whether it actually is in reality. But now I’m treading into the waters of psychology - a pool I am definitely not qualified to swim in! Generally speaking though, our brains will tell us not to repeat something that doesn’t feel good, so when it comes to giving and helping others, it’s that response that has us continuing to give. I wonder how many of us would keep giving, even to friends and family, let alone people in need, if it weren’t for the fact that it makes us feel good. There are countless ways to give to others, especially at Christmas time, so let’s maximise how good it makes us feel and give more than we normally do. We could even think of it as a gift to ourselves - a huge gift of ‘feel good’ moments! And it’s not only the material gifts like money, presents or food..we can give in so many more ways than just gifts we can see. As corny as it is, giving someone a smile really can make all the difference to their day. I’ve learnt through my studies, people experiencing homelessness crave human connection. No matter how small it may seem to us, those who have been or are homeless say that eye contact is one of the biggest things that tells them they are important; that they have been ‘seen’. I have been amazed to see stranger’s faces change when you smile at them - small things that make a big difference. Why not give the gift of your time and company by inviting someone who will be on their own this Christmas to share in your family Christmas celebrations? Why not be intentional with neighbours and plan a Christmas get together? So, from our office to your home, may your Christmas be filled with love, laughter and gifts of all variety. And may we all be addicted to the feeling of giving and give abundantly this Christmas season!

FROM THE DESK OF

Councillor Charles Strunk Forest Lake Ward Councillor

November is a special month for residents in Forest Lake for numerous reason. What an array of things were going on - from the new War Animal Memorial unveiling, master plan public consultation, litter pickups, and community consultations, this month brings us all together for many reasons. Its humbling to be part of so many of them! Forest Lake Memorial unveiling As the local councillor, it was a true honour and privilege for a second year in a row to remember, pay my respects, and lay a remembrance wreath in memory of all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and freedom. The day was shared with Forest Lake RSL Sub-Branch, Federal MP for Oxley Milton Dick and members of the community at the Remembrance Day Commemoration Service on November 11th. This occasion was extra special as we unveiled the new War Animal Memorial at the Amphitheatre that I proudly supported in memory of all animals that have served and died on the frontlines alongside our soldiers. I would like to also acknowledge all the hard work Brisbane City Council staff did in the lead up to the Remembrance Day ceremony and all who attended. Master Plan Public Consultation I was pleased to be joined by many community members at my first public community Forest Lake Master Plan Public Consultation at the Lake Parklands Prescient. The lake is a very special place for residents of Forest Lake and I look forward to continue working with residents to improve the lake. To ensure that we work as a community, I will continue hosting community consultations. Since then, I have met with residents after the litter pick-up for a one-onone and held a weekend information stall blitz at the Forest Lake Shopping information stall. Litter pick-up Well done and a big thanks to everyone who participated in the Forest Lake litter pick-up last month. It is always a pleasure to see new Forest Lake residents taking part in this fantastic local initiative and getting to know the team. Don’t forget- we have litter pick-up equipment you can borrow for free at the Forest Lake Ward office. Forest Lake Mobile Information Stall Huge thanks must go to all the volunteers and residents who made time to visit me on Saturday 11th November and 12th November at my mobile information stall at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre. I had a great time talking with residents about all the good work the local elected team are doing in the area. As always, if you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to contact my friendly staff at the Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211. I hope to see you when I’m out and about in our wonderful ward.

ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

E

Our first meeting for November saw our youth members off and running - literally. As the Melbourne Cup came to an end, our Joey Scouts and Cub Scouts began a fun afternoon based around the Melbourne Cup. Part of this also involved making a wreath ready for the Remembrance Day service at Forest Lake, commemorating animals in war. The Scouts decided to beat the heat with a night of ice-skating, followed up with a swim at Robelle Lagoon. They then joined with our Cub Scouts to paint a pile of rocks that have been hidden around Forest Lake waiting for people to find - so keep an eye out and let us know if you find them. We were proud to attend the Forest Lake service for Remembrance Day on November 11, and then enjoyed a lovely picnic with our youth members and their families afterward. Taking the time and opportunities to get together socially is a huge part of our Group. We have an amazing parent group who we truly appreciate. Yet again, they banded together this month to make our Chocolate Fundraiser and our stall at the Forest Lake Markets enjoyable experiences, and shared the load to make the work easier for us all. November ended with our Group Camp, where all sections enjoyed a weekend at Wirraglen Scout Camp near Toowoomba. I think the Leaders and parents who supported us are still in recovery mode. Hopefully we will all be fully functioning for our break up picnic and lights tour next weekend. As the end of our Scouting year draws closer, our thoughts are already turning to 2018 as our Leaders try to come up with another year of exciting and interesting activities for our youth members. We wish all of our Scouting family and other community friends and supporters a very Merry Christmas. Page 4 - December 2017 - The Lake News

(L-R) Casey Milne, Charlie Deane, Kian O’Keefe and Ben Newman Local Forest Lake resident, Casey Milne will be heading to Tasmania early next year for the National Finals of the REA F1 in Schools Technology Challenge. Casey, together with fellow team members from Bolt Racing Ben Newman, Kian O’Keefe and Charlie Deane, Year 8 students from Canterbury College, recently competed in the State Finals held at QUT at the beginning of November. The REA F1 in Schools Technology Challenge is an international competition, involving over nine million students from 17,000 schools from around the world. The aim is to design and manufacture and race a miniature Formula 1 racing car. Cars powered by CO2 canisters, reach speeds of up to 80km/hour in less than a second as they hurtle down a 25 metre track. Students also learn valuable leadership, team building, project management, business planning, public speaking, marketing and presentation skills throughout the competition. Bolt Racing won the Regional Finals held in August and felt prepared for the rigorous competition of the State Finals. Teams competed in many categories including engineering, manufacturing, marketing, presentation, industry collaboration and racing. Bolt Racing won six awards at the State Finals and came second overall, earning a place in the National Finals to be held in Tasmania next March. “The competition was really tough and we were very happy to do so well and to get into the National Finals. We are now busy redesigning our car to make it even faster and securing sponsors to help get us to Tasmania and then hopefully the World Finals, said Casey.

Evening g & Saturdayy appointments available Father and son duo, David and Simon Armstrong lead the multi-award winning team at Bank of Queensland Forest Lake. Father and son duo David and Simon Armstrong became the Owner-Managers of BOQ Forest Lake 16 years ago, and now, the multi-award winning branch is one of the biggest success stories within the Bank’s 200-strong branch network across Australia. What was once regarded as the ‘wild’ west of Brisbane with acres and acres of undeveloped land, Forest Lake has grown from a few hundred homes to in excess of 12,000 homes and 30,000 residents both in Forest Lake and neighbouring suburbs including Durack, Doolandella, Heathwood and now Pallara. BOQ Forest Lake has also enjoyed similar growth with staff numbers increasing from three people to nine people over the last 16+ years. With what started out as a State-owned Bank more than 140 years ago, BOQ today is represented with branches in every State and Territory in Australia. The Owner-Managed concept is unique within the Banking Industry in Australia and the unrivalled success of such a model has been taken to new heights by David and Simon being named 2017 Runner Up Owner-Managed Branch in Australia at the recent BOQ National Sales Conference held on the Gold Coast. Another commendable award to add to their coveted titles of Number 1 Owner-Managed Branch in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016. Success such as this is not just the efforts of David and Simon – their support staff of Peter, Chrissy, Shauna, Angela, Jan, Michelle and Sarah make a formidable team of professional bankers. In fact, the entire team at BOQ Forest Lake can boast of their combined 116 years of BOQ experience, of which 81 years can be attributed to working at the Forest Lake branch. Team Forest Lake takes this opportunity to thank the local residents and business owners who have embraced and acknowledged that the Owner-Managed model offers something special that many financial institutions are not able to match. David and Simon have a very special passion and drive for their Forest Lake branch and the local community. Success in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016 and in 2017 is the result of a team of highly experienced and committed individuals.

GIVIT launches Have you had a Australia’s Biggest skin check lately? Secret Santa

Book your appointment today with Dr Ali (Accredited Skin Doctor)

GIVIT Founder and CEO Juliette Wright is challenging local residents to become secret Santas this Christmas. GIVIT is calling on local residents to set a new record for Australia’s Biggest Secret Santa. GIVIT Founder and CEO Juliette Wright said all Queenslanders should become a secret Santa for someone in genuine need and give a gift that counts this Christmas. “We’re asking big-hearted Australians to help break last year’s national total of 18,653 gifts and donate through givit. org.au,” Juliette said. “Somewhere in Queensland, a young man transitioning from homelessness needs a fridge, a young woman with mental health issues needs a chest of drawers and a family of five need a washing machine after theirs recently broke down. “To identify exactly what is needed by society’s most vulnerable, GIVIT works with more than 1700 charities nation-wide, ranging from The Salvation Army and Australian Red Cross to smaller community groups and neighbourhood centres.” Juliette said every secret Santa will make a massive difference to people around the state. “Every day of the year GIVIT matches those who want to give to those in need but we always see a huge spike in need leading up to Christmas when many families face increased financial pressure. We are asking everyone to open their hearts,” she said. “So, forget the soap on a rope, the fridge magnet or the packet of golf tees and instead get on board with Australia’s Biggest Secret Santa this Christmas and make a real difference to someone in need.” Under GIVIT’s strict privacy policy, donors and recipients always remain anonymous to each other, meaning every gift given through givit.org.au truly is a secret Santa. To get involved, go to the website: 1. Choose an item request that touches your heart from GIVIT’s ‘items needed list’. 2. Click “GIVIT” and offer your donation with a photograph. 3. Once approved, contact details between you and the charity are exchanged automatically. 4. Arrange delivery of the item with the charity user behind the request 5. Download the GIVIT Christmas card to give to friends or family explaining their amazing gift for some in real need.

St John’s hosts Spirit of Innovation Challenge Recently St John’s Anglican College proudly hosted the first Annual Australian Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge. The Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge was established in 2008 and honours the legacy of Apollo 12 astronaut, Charles ‘Pete’ Conrad, and his four-decade passion for innovation and entrepreneurship. St John’s, having made the finals for three years running, was eager to bring the Challenge closer home to provide the opportunity for more Australian students to experience this exciting collaborative space which is designed to promote collegiality and a free exchange of ideas. While some traditional competitions involve more competitive activities, the Innovation Summit held in November, aims to encourage young innovators, allow them to network with students from across the world and get the chance to see their ideas turned into real, marketable solutions. Over 55 students from different schools as far away as Bundaberg attended the Innovation Summit at St John’s to pitch their innovative products to a panel of highly respected industry leaders.

Team Speechability, from St Aidans won the overall challenge.

Team New Echo, from St John’s Anglican College took away the prize for Best Innovation. Teams made up of three to five students had been challenged to develop a disruptive technology that addressed any issue in the world today in the areas of health and nutrition, energy and the environment, aerospace and aviation and cyber technologies and securities. Successful groups called on a wide variety of skills, not just from science and technology, but also from business, design and public speaking. Of the 18 teams at the Challenge, six advanced as finalists presenting ideas like a battlefield bandage that sculpts to an injured soldier’s particular injury, a series of sensors used to help urban and rural farmers to collect and utilise data on their crops, a kinetic-based water filtration system and a biodegradable solution to women’s health issues in indigenous communities. Team New Echo, from St John’s took away the prize for Best Innovation with their bone-conductive hearing aid, while Team Speechability from St Aidan’s won the overall challenge with their integrated App and database designed to connect people with autism to potential employers. As the overall winners, Team Speechability has now been invited to present at the American Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge at the Kennedy Space Centre in 2018. St John’s is now planning the 2018 Australian Challenge with the support of the Conrad Foundation and is looking forward to bringing this opportunity to more students and more schools.

by John Prout “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go” are the opening words to one of the more popular Christmas Carols and it is true at the moment. Wherever we look, Christmas lights, Christmas parties, decorations in the department stores, advertising on television and in the press are all telling us “It’s beginning to look like Christmas”. Not forgetting, our letter boxes are filled with so many different Christmas catalogues. How many gifts have you already crossed off your shopping list? I’m sure our children and grandchildren are counting down the ‘sleeps’ till Santa comes. How is your shopping list going? When making up your list of gifts, don’t forget to include a gift that keeps on giving. I’m talking about a productive pot plant. There are a wide range of potted plants to suit every pocket both in flowers, vegetables, chillies, cherry tomatoes or even an herb. For some reason I always leave my shopping till the last week. Our last meeting for the year will be our Christmas break-up and we’ll be enjoying a spit roast luncheon with a choice of two desserts. I’m also looking forward to the entertainment performed by the Baby Boomer duo who will entertain us with music from the 50’s and 60’s as well as singing Christmas carols. Now before we get carried away with another festive season, parties and holidays, let’s not forget about our garden as this is the hottest month of the year. Topping up the mulch, especially if you are going on holidays, is important in assisting the moisture to be maintained longer for all plants as they grow through the hot summer days. Remember not to place the mulch up against the plant stems. Why not add some water crystals? Water deeply as this will encourage the roots to go further into the soil to find the moisture. Water in the cool of the morning or evening but avoid watering disease-susceptible plants at night. Another helpful hint is to raise the mower height during the warmer weather as longer grass means cooler soil at the root level. Also the slightly longer grass will reduce the risk of weeds growing through the lawn. There are no failures in gardening just experiments! Our first meeting in 2018 will be on Tuesday 6 February and the team from Rocky Point Mulching will be our guest speakers. Wishing all gardeners a very Merry Christmas and a safe and a prosperous New Year. Thanks to Susannah and the team at The Lake News for their support throughout the year. Remember the best Christmas gift is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other!

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

The First Noel The First Noel, the Angels did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel! They looked up and saw a star Shining in the East beyond them far And to the earth it gave great light And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel! And by the light of that same star Three Wise men came from country far To seek for a King was their intent And to follow the star wherever it went. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel! This star drew nigh to the northwest O’er Bethlehem it took its rest And there it did both Pause and stay Right o’er the place where Jesus lay. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!

Then one foggy Christmas eve, Santa came to stay, (ho ho ho) “Rudolph with your nose so bright, Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

Then entered in those Wise men three Full reverently upon their knee And offered there in His presence Their gold and myrrh and frankincense. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!

Then how the reindeer loved him, (loved him) As they shouted out with glee! (Yippee) “Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, (reindeer) You’ll go down in history.”

While shepherds watched their flocks by night They saw a bright new shining star And heard a choir from heaven sing The music came from afar Hark! Now hear the angels sing: “New King’s born today And man will live for evermore Because of Christmas Day!” Now Joseph and his wife Mary Came to Bethlehem that night. They found no place to bear her Child, Not a single room was in sight. Hark! Now hear the angels sing: “New King’s born today And man will live for evermore Because of Christmas Day!” By and by they found a little nook In a stable all forlorn. And in a manger cold and dark Mary’s little Boy/Child was born Trumpets sound and angels sing, Listen to what they say! That man will live forevermore Because of Christmas Day!

Wasps Monthly Update

The Wasps conducted their AGM recently where the current Management Committee were re-elected unopposed. This is a wonderful vote of confidence in our hardworking team who have ‘steadied the ship’ and steered the club into a bright future. The Committee thanks the members for their faith in us and looks forward to serving in the year ahead. Also returning for Season 2018 are our coaches, managers and Home Games Team, including referees and medics. We are so grateful to these dedicated people who are operating the ‘frontline business’ of our club, providing stability and security to our young players who need the strength of positive leadership and encouraging support. The hallmark of the Wasps is teamwork and it is the key feature we have that sets us apart from other clubs. Our retention rate is second to none: if a kid tries the game with us, they love it; they find their place to belong and feel they can achieve and this helps them want to stay. Thus we are increasingly being viewed as the club of choice by parents for the U5-U9 age groups, where the whole family can be involved in a rewarding and memorable experience. Our Strategic Plan and Constitution were also approved at the AGM, representing the culmination of two years’ work. These key documents put our goals in place and establish our core values to guide future volunteers. We have had a big few years of overcoming struggles common to all community not-for—profit organisations. We could not have done it without the goodwill and support of our community, including our local sponsors and political representatives at all levels of government. We have received grants and in-kind donations that also helped us on our way, including from the Heritage Bank, Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund and Get Going from the State Government. Most of all though, our biggest thanks are to our families, devoted to advocating for our Forest Lake kids and their very own local club. Our Come N Try Days in 2018 will be bigger than ever and we have new opportunities for an U10s mixed team and U11s girls Viva 7s. If you want to find your place at the Wasps contact us via www.forestlakewasps.com.au. Registrations will open in January. We want to take this opportunity to wish all readers a fun and active Christmas season!

Forest Lake Probus Club Update

Jenros Framers e Framer Your Local Pictur

by Marge Breitenbach

By the time this publication reaches our community, the Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc will only have its Christmas function left as there is no meeting in December. The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support during the year. We would also like to extend our appreciation to our elected representatives, the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP Member for Inala, Leeanne Enoch MP Member for Algester, Milton Dick MP Federal Member for Oxley and Cr Charles Strunk Councillor for Forest Lake Ward who sponsored some of our events and granted assistance. Our grateful thanks also go to all the businesses who supported us. On 20th February 2018 the Forest Lake Club with Goodna will be hosting the 25th Celebration of Probus in Queensland at a luncheon function at the Lions Club in Richlands. Preparations are well underway for this event. To everyone in our region, please accept the Club’s best wishes for an enjoyable holiday season and a very safe Christmas. For some people the festive season can bring emotional upset, depression and loneliness. Family and friends arrive in joyous mood to celebrate and if one is totally alone even on Christmas day, it is easy to fall into that black hole. The writer talks of experience. The Editor commented in the July edition, “People’s propensity to meanness is staggering. So please do check on friends and others you know. As the Editor wrote in the September edition “Life is too short...so let us all be the best we can and put our caring selves into perspective. It only takes a phone call lasting a few seconds or a jet visit in and out to say hello or to check on someone. The Probus Club meets the second Tuesday of the month, 10am Uniting Church Hall, Waterford Street, Ellen Grove. Retirees and semi-retirees do pay us a visit in the New Year. We stand for fun, friendship and fellowship. For more details please contact Membership Officer Judith on 3278 8042 or President Fran on 0403 882 030.

Our Footy season for 2017 has well and truly come to a close. The games are done, team breakups are finished and plans for new projects are underway. The club Presentation Day was held on Saturday 4th November after rescheduling due to rain. All players received individual trophies and many received special trophies awarded by coaching staff in recognition of their achievements during the season. Players and families were treated with free rides and an animal farm visit on the day. This year we awarded a special Life Membership Award to Farren Dicker, Club President, in recognition of his 11 years at the club undertaking a variety of roles – many of which were as President. Farren (centre) is pictured receiving his award with David Lythall, Vice President, and Councillor Charles Strunk. We would like to thank Charles for taking the time to attend and present the trophies to our players and award recipients. Our AGM was held on Sunday 5th November. We now have a new club President, Graham Davis, with Farren to assist as Vice President. Graham’s ideas for some of next year’s projects will inject some more enthusiasm into the club as it continues to grow. We do have some committee positions available for anyone wishing to help, in particular that of secretary. We would also be interested in hearing from anyone who is interested in coaching our teams, especially for Under 11 and Under 12 Premier Division teams. Anyone wanting to express an interest in committee or training positions may contact Graham directly on 0409 199 437 or alternatively send an email to admin@forestlakejrlfc.com.au. We would like to wish all of our committee, volunteers, players and their families a very safe and happy Christmas break and look forward to seeing you all again on sign up day. 2018 is shaping up to be a great year for Forest Lake Junior Rugby League!

Monthly Update

by Les Brooks

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Clubs November activity was a trip to the old Majestic Theatre at Pomona built in 1921. On arrival at the theatre, we were served a delicious devonshire tea that helped to blow away our travel cobwebs. After a relaxing look around the old theatre, and exploring the nearby shops, we were ushered to our seats for a fabulous silent movie, featuring Buster Keaton in the 1924 ‘Sherlock Junior Detective’. Well, this had everyone rolling in the aisles with laughter, and the piano player, Chris Rose, never missed a beat! What a scream of a show that everyone enjoyed immensely. Following the movie, we were served a two course roast dinner lunch, followed by tea and coffee. On Tuesday 7th November, the Club’s ‘extra activity’ was a Melbourne Cup Luncheon at the Blue Fin, Inala. As usual there was a great turnout of 70+ members who enjoyed a wonderful day. The Club President, Leonie Ayling, extends her thanks to the committee, members and supporters of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club for all their help throughout the year. In addition, she would like to thank The Lion, Richlands, The Lake News, Heritage Community Branch and all of our local Council, State and Federal Members of Parliament for their continuing support. The contributions from all of those people and organisations help to make our club one of the strongest local community club in the Forest Lake area. We would like to take this opportunity to wish every member a Merry Christmas and a prosperous year in 2018, and to all of The Lake News readers a sleigh full of wishes and dreams come true, and may the spirit of the Christmas season fill you all up with joy. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at The Lion, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next two meetings are 19th January and 9th February 2018. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. New members are always welcome.

Family Focus

with Mark Mackay

It’s that special time of year when we celebrate Christmas again. As we gather as families, at carols events, at work Christmas parties, at street parties, etc, we come together with an underlying sense of community and a desire for peace at home and abroad. That message of peace is one of the great songs of Christmas. It was the message from the angels at the announcement of Christ’s birth, when they sang, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.” (Luke 2:14) It was one of the titles given to the newborn king as ‘Prince of Peace’(Isaiah 9:6). And yet, as we look around our community and the world, we don’t see the peace that Christmas seems to promise. As Bono sings in U2’s ‘Peace on Earth’, “I hear it every Christmas time; But hope and history won’t rhyme.” This last year has seen so many sad stories of abuse, warfare, terrorism, domestic violence and so on. So, as Bono says, “What’s it worth, this peace on Earth?” Fundamentally, the Christmas message is not just a promise but an invitation. It is a promise that Christ will ultimately bring the peace we crave but it is also an invitation to be peacemakers ourselves through our interactions with others. Just as our military have won the peace we enjoy, the peace that Christmas offers was ultimately won for us by Jesus’ death and resurrection and He now calls us to follow His example by being peacemakers in this world. Christ’s sacrifice for peace is unparalleled and unmatched and he calls us into His peace, not just with words but by also actively being peace-bearers in our community and world. So, as you celebrate the Christmas message this year, rather than just look to be the beneficiary of peace, consider how you can be the peacemaker in your home, your community and the wider world. On behalf of my family and Church, I pray that you will have a wonderfully blessed Christmas, that you will know the peace of Christ yourself and that you will seize the opportunity to be a peacemaker where you can. FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update

by Alan Greig g

Our sincere apologies to Alan Greig and the RSL Forest Lake Sub-branch that the incorrect header was used for their article in the November edition - Ed.

I

n an earlier article, I undertook to provide some information on the Berlin Airlift or Blockade by the Soviet Union on the sectors of Berlin controlled by the Western Allies namely USA, Great Britain and France. The blockade commenced on 14 June 1948 and ended May 13, 1949. The blockade was the first international crisis of the Cold War and the first resulting in casualties. The Soviets blocked the rail, road and canal access to the zones controlled by the Allies. Their objective was to force the Western Powers to allow the Soviet zone to start supplying the Western sectors with food and fuel. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew the newly introduced Deutsche Bank from West Berlin. In response, the Western Allies organised the Berlin Airlift on June 25, 1948 to carry supplies to the people of Berlin. Nineteen aircraft types from the USAF, RAF, RCAF, RAAF and RNZAF flew more than 200,000 flights in one year (sometimes landing an aircraft every 30 seconds) providing 8,893 tons of necessities each day. The Soviets did not attempt to stop the airlift for fear that such action may lead to open conflict. In the spring of 1949 the airlift was clearly being successful and in April the Allies were delivering more cargo than had previously been transported by rail. In April alone the airlift delivered 23,442 tons. On May 12, 1949 the USSR lifted the blockade as they perceived the airlift would operate indefinitely and besides the success of the airlift was humiliating the Soviets. On April 15, 1949, the Soviet newsagency TASS reported a willingness, on behalf of the Soviets, to lift the blockade. Following negotiations on May 4, 1949, the Allies announced an agreement to end the blockade in eight days time. The Royal Australian Air Force’s involvement included the delivery of 7,968 tons of freight and 6,964 passengers flying 2,662 sorties (or more than six flights per day). A total of 101 fatalities were recorded including 40 Britons and 30 Americans mostly due to the crashes of 17 USAF and eight RAF aircraft. The Berlin airlift was a resounding Allied success during the Cold War.

While you are away over Christmas and the New Year, your pet may also be on holidays at a boarding kennels or cattery. Most pets cope well and enjoy the change of scenery but some aren’t as social or as well as others and are affected by stress. To ensure that your pet has an uneventful holiday, I would recommend the following. Vaccinations. Dogs need to be vaccinated for Canine Cough going to a kennel as well as the routine Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvo injections. Cats need to be minimally immunised for Feline Respiratory Disease and Feline Enteritis. Other vaccinations such as FIV (Cat AIDS) are now available as well for cats that are at risk. Ask your vet about what your pets need. I would recommend that if your pets are overdue for their vaccinations, they have a booster at least two weeks before boarded. Getting vaccinations done in a rush the morning you are due to drop your pet at the kennels or cattery, will not always work in time. If your pets are nearly due, a strategic booster given the same way is a great way of maximising immunity especially to respiratory disease. Cat and dog upper respiratory tract infections are the hardest to maintain immunity to and the most easily contracted when a lot of pets are in close proximity to each other. Make sure you have your current vaccination certificate with you when you book in. Internal and External Parasites. Worm your pets with an all wormer before boarding. Make sure your pets are up to date with flea control and if you come from a tick area make sure you are using an effective product your vet is happy with. Ticks have appeared after the recent rain and as with vaccinations, don’t leave it till the last minute to start prevention. Tell the kennel/cattery manager what parasite treatment you are using and make sure they are covered while boarding. General Health. Some pets, especially old pets, may have health issues. Please have your pet’s health checked before boarded and make sure you have left enough medication and that it is clearly labelled. Please tell the manager your pets health issues and whom they should talk to if there is a problem while you are away. Your vet’s and a family member’s phone number should be left if you cannot be contacted. Enjoy your holidays.

FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y

Dear Forest Lake readers, As the year draws to a close, I’d like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. It’s a special time of year to spend with family and friends but also to remember those who are doing it a bit tough. If you’re in a position to, I encourage you to donate food, items or money to your local charity or church to help those less fortunate. A highlight for me this year was seeing firsthand the amazing work from our amazing volunteers at many organisations, clubs and schools in the area. Their dedication, passion and tireless work does not go unnoticed and, on behalf of the community, I thank you for all the work you do. As your local Federal Member of Parliament, it is very important to me to be close to the community and available to hear your feedback on federal issues that are important to you. I’ve listened to thousands of local residents at the 16 mobile offices I’ve held this year to hear residents concerns and feedback. The failed NBN rollout continues to be a priority for our region and I’ll continue to push for services to be improved for homes and businesses in 2018. Access to affordable healthcare and protections for seniors and pensioners are also key items I’ll be fighting for. It’s been an honour to serve our local community this year. I hope you enjoy the Christmas period and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Please also remember to drive carefully on the roads and be safe near the water. As always, if there is anything I can help with please email me at Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au or call my office on 3879 6440.

Thank you to our valued clients and the community for an unbelievable 2017. We want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. From our MTR family to yours.
