I recently read that the Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2016 was, Post-Truth. Haven’t heard that word before? Nor had I but the more I read, the more I could see why it is their Word for 2016. PostTrust is “an adjective defined as ‘relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.’” The Oxford Dictionary organisation give proof that this is the case by pointing to the Brexit vote and the US Presidential election as examples where emotion and fear (on both sides) were more critical than actual truth. Indeed, one British journalist has written, “The truth has become so devalued that what was once the gold standard of political debate is a worthless currency.” It seems almost nonsensical to say but truth has become devalued because we can’t even agree anymore that there is ‘truth’. My truth is different to your truth – our postmodern world tells us that there are no absolutes. As someone has said, “Everyone is free to choose their own truth.” Now, what does all this have to do with families? Simply this – we cannot rely on society to be the ethical teacher to our children. We must not be lazy in imagining that the next generation will pick it up as they go. We must show them that there is a better way. There are absolutes in the world. There is truth and error. There are rhythms and laws of nature without which we would all be sent spinning off in the darkness of space. It doesn’t mean we all have to agree on everything all the time – I won’t force my opinion on you. I will respect your perspective. But, let’s not let tolerance of each other’s views descend into the anarchy that means we reject truth altogether. It is a mark of love that we can disagree on things without rejecting the person. So, how do you establish your value system as a family? What are the core truths that are the bedrock for your home – the things about which your children will say, “Mum and Dad might have made a few mistakes, but one thing about which they were certain was...” As a Christian, my faith guides my understanding of truth because I believe there is a God who stands outside of this world as the Creator, King and Judge, who sent His Son, Jesus Christ, as the embodiment of truth. Christ said, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.” (John 14:6) What guides your understanding of truth? How will the next generation understand the foundation you have laid? Let’s reject Post-Truth and say with Martin Luther King, “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis I was recently at a friends house and noticed she had a fridge magnet that stated “Nothing works if you don’t. I had a chuckle, knowing it had mostly likely been bought for the benefit of the three teenage boys in the house. While I’m not entirely sure it’s completely right, it’s an interesting thought, isn’t it? Generally speaking, if we want things to work in life, we need to work too - in all sorts of ways. One of the concepts touched on in my studies last year, was individualism versus collectivism. Now, while collectivism is dangerously close to communism, I do think we need a balance of the two philosophies. Individualism is basically applied to societies where the rights, needs and wants of the individual trump (and I hesitate to use that word, even in its correct non-proper noun context!) those of the group; and collectivism is the opposite ie that the rights, needs and wants of the group or community should come before the individual. As my friend’s fridge magnet suggests, we need to be intentional and active in our lives in order for things to happen. And we can’t always do that by ourselves, for ourselves alone. Often, we need collaboration, or a ‘collectivism’ mindset, in order to move forward or progress in life. One of the most common complaints by residents in any community is the apparent lack of thought for others. We complain when a neighbours dog barks incessantly or their music is too loud. We have lots to say when We see people littering or not cleaning up after their dog in a public space. We are annoyed at the absence of consideration when trolley’s aren’t put back or someone takes a car space we’ve been waiting for. We all see the sense and importance of considering others, yet we still ultimately, live with an individualist attitude. And that’s not all bad either. If we were not individuals, and live as such, many things would not have been created, changed or challenged in our world. We absolutely need independent thought, feelings and actions; we need the individual in order to make up the collective. The beauty is in being individuals together. In other words, we don’t so much need collectivism, we need collaboration. We need the celebration of our individuality and all that brings with it. What we don’t need is selfish individualism or blind collectivism. As we move into this year as a community, let’s try to balance individualism and collectivism. Let’s think of ourselves and how we would like things to be and allow that to help us see things from another’s perspective. Because ‘nothing works if we don’t’ applies to all of us. Working on ourselves can have wonderful ramifications for those around us. And we just might find that as individuals we can collaborate and make our little corner of the world an even better place to live.

Forest Lake Rotary Club update by Jeff Jones - President. 2017 has arrived and by the time you read this, school students will be back at school. We hope you all had a fantastic break and 2017 has started on a good note for you. Forest Lake Rotary is back in the swing of it and have had four meetings and our first Citizenship Ceremony. Already our new people are arriving. We do have a beautiful country, and we are very lucky to live here. Thanks to the generous support of Ray White Forest Lake in Grand Avenue, and the greater community of Forest Lake, we put together over 200 Christmas presents for the not so fortunate children in our community. These were distributed by the new Community Life Centre in Waterford Road Ellen Grove. We also made presents available for those women and children who were in a domestic violence situation. This year it’s our plan to do bigger and better things. Anybody needing assistance can contact Rev Russell Reynoldson and Rev Sharene Fechner at Forest Lake Uniting Church. Our first meeting was a combined meeting with Sumner Park Rotary Club, Lachlan McDowell and Emily Dodd with held at the McCloud Golf Club. It was an enjoyable evening and to top it off Sumner Park Rotary President Jenny. Sumner had a surprise with an exchange student returning from Germany, and another leaving for Sweden in another week. Lachlan McDowell returned from Germany after 12 months living the life in another country. Lachlan told me that he had thoroughly enjoyed his time and with the diversity of the people of Germany met many new friends that he no doubt will have for many years to come. Emily Dodd is leaving our proud nation in a weeks’ time to fly to Sweden, and will, we are sure going on the information planned, have a wonderful 12 months also. Exchange students are sponsored by the Rotary Clubs both in their country and the country that they are travelling to. We also have students travelling inbound to Australia, so if you are interested in doing something like this contact your local Rotary Club for more information of how it can be done. Membership Alan 3271 3358, Public Relations Jeff 0417 003 336 or Bob for Events 0412 982 566.

Your Teeth Your Smile by Dr Paul Holliday New cancer test using saliva Recently, it was announced that a new simple test using saliva could detect cancer. The test is a screening tool that would make it much easier, simpler and inexpensive to test for cancer. Normally a blood test and expensive imaging would be required to test for cancer. Dr David Wong professor of oral biology and medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Dentistry, highlighted the advances made by the institute in the field of salivaomics, the study of the complex sets of molecules in saliva. He stated that his research had shown very high success in testing for lung cancer in patients. It is about to enter further clinical trials and is not expected to be available for commercial use for a few years. There has been other research that has shown pancreatic cancer can be detected in saliva as well. Currently, pancreatic cancer is diagnosed by an invasive and expensive biopsy. The researchers at UCLA, School of Dentistry showed that biomarkers from pancreatic cancer can be found in saliva as well as the bloodstream. Dr Wong stated the research was significant because it lends credibility to the mechanism of systemic disease detection in saliva. It is thought that as DNA research into different types of cancers improves, it may be possible to detect many different types of cancer by means of this simple saliva test. There are several studies currently testing if saliva can be used to detect breast cancer as well as other types of cancer. Salivary testing has also been investigated in diabetes and has been shown to be as accurate as blood testing. This could eventually eliminate or reduce the frequency of pinpricks for blood glucose monitoring in diabetics. The diabetes test uses a new biosensor that can determine concentrations of glucose at even low levels. The researchers also stated that they could possibly test for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease using the same biosensor but recalibrated to test for the neurotransmitter glutamate. Early detection of systemic diseases like diabetes and especially cancer have helped control and reduce the damaging effects of the disease. Soon, a simple saliva test that your dentist can carry out in 20 minutes may be part of your dental checkup. These non-invasive and inexpensive tests look like they may change the future of disease screening.

The Lions Club of Forest Lake are encouraging residents to join them in helping clean up litter on the footpaths and other public areas of Forest Lake. One of the attractions of Forest Lake that make it such a great place to live are the wide footpaths and abundance of green spaces. Unfortunately, not everyone who uses these spaces is careful about what they leave behind and litter is a problem. After discussions with local Councillor Charles Strunk, the Forest Lake Lions Club has decided to register a number of sites in Forest Lake as part of the annual Clean Up Australia Day event and are looking for residents to volunteer to spend an hour or two helping to collect litter near these designated areas. The Clean Up will be held between 7.00 and 9.00am on Sunday 5th March. Residents wanting to participate will need to register. This can be done on the day by coming to one of the three registration sites set up by the Lions Club which will be at Forest Lake Community Hall, Forest Lake Community House and the shade sails by the Lake. Alternatively, you can register online prior to the day by joining one of the Forest Lake cleanup sites via the Clean Up Australia Day website www.cleanupaustraliaday.org. au. Additional information will also be available on The Lions Club of Forest Lake facebook page. Clean Up Australia Day is held each year and is Australia’s largest community-based environmental event. Since the original Clean Up Day in 1990, hundreds of thousands of ordinary Australians have volunteered a couple of hours of their time to make their suburbs a cleaner place to live, collecting over 331 thousand tonnes of rubbish that would otherwise litter streets, parks and waterways. So please come along and be part of Clean Up Australia Day this year.

What’s on at Ipswich Civic Centre?
DUST OF URUZGAN Saturday 25 March Tickets $25.00 Gallery Club Dining $60.00 Presented by Ipswich Civic Centre in association with Legacy Ipswich Fred Smith is no ordinary singer-songwriter...and this is no ordinary show. Dust Of Uruzgan is a collection of songs Fred wrote while working as a diplomat alongside Australian soldiers in Uruzgan Province, southern Afghanistan. The show combines songs, humour and commentary with a stunning set of images from military and civilian photographers. Fred is a true raconteur; a masterful and entertaining storyteller, who has been compared to great Australian songwriters, Eric Bogle, John Schumann and Don Walker. His songs are stories put to well-crafted music; telling the real life experiences of some 20,000 Australian soldiers who served in Afghanistan. In this live show you will be transported to Afghanistan, to experience life as a soldier: the dust, the heat, the frustration, the fighting and the camaraderie. Poignant, educational, and at times hilarious, Dust Of Uruzgan is an enlightening and entertaining live music performance. Gallery Club Dining is available for this performance and includes an exclusive two-course dinner delivered high above the lobby on our private gallery level and a ticket to the performance. With only 30 seats available, this is a must-do experience. Carefully constructed menus, superb local and interstate wines and a refined level of personal service is what you can expect from this superb dinner and show package.

Play AFL this season with the Dragons The Forest Lake Dragons Junior Australian Football Club (JAFC) are looking towards another triumphant AFL season. 2016 saw the Dragons victorious with their win in the Under 13 Girls QLD Grand Final against Calamvale. 2016 was the turning point for Australian AFL history when a female (for the first time in AFL history) won the O’Callaghan Medal at the QLD BJ Awards. To top off the season, Dragons U13 Girls captain Ashlee Sciortino was indeed the female who took the O’Callaghan Medal home to the Forest Lake Dragons. It looks like another great year with overall memberships growing in youth AFL boys and girls teams and skilled coaches within the Dragons to pursue high level team and individual AFL goals. Photo courtesy of Highflyer Images. The Forest Lake Dragons AFL ‘Sign on Day’ is Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February from 9am to 1pm at the CJ Greenfield Sporting Complex, Freeman Road, Richlands. The day will incorporate a ‘Come and Try’ session for all past and new members and parents and carers are invited to stay for the fundraising sausage sizzle, drinks and ice blocks. 2017 Dragons AFL Teams for 2016 will consist of: Under 6’s Roy’s Rookies, Under 8’s, Under 9’s, Under 11’s Girls, Under 13’s Girls, Under 12’s boys and Under 14’s boys. The 2017 Dragons are offering: a free Forest Lake Dragons custom AFL ball with every fully paid registration and free U6’s membership to Roy’s Rookies Junior Football on completion of AUSKICK. The Forest Lake Dragons have successfully received a $7,500 grant from the QLD Sport and Recreation Department in 2017 which will assist the club with further coaching accreditation and first aid courses, electronic equipment for coaching and sporting equipment for training. The Heritage Bank have continued to support the Dragons and have sponsored the Dragons desperately needed additional club guernsey’s to cater for the influx of the new 2017 memberships. Without these new club guernsey’s, the Dragons would have struggled to place a uniform on the growing numbers of AFL memberships expected in 2017. The Dragons would like to thank the Forest Lake community for their continued support. 2016 saw sponsorship grow the club by more than double and allowed the club to purchase desperately needed AFL balls, a marque, sporting/ training equipment, provide first aid and accredited AFL coaching courses for volunteer coaches. I want Queensland to be a place where people of all abilities feel included and have the opportunity to contribute to their communities. People within the Forest Lake community can help to shape this future by sharing ideas on how we can make our state more accessible and inclusive. These ideas will help us to form a new disability plan for Queensland. The ‘Towards an all abilities Queensland’ consultation paper will help direct future policies across the five priority areas of personal and community relationships, recreation and tourism, working and learning, key services, and leadership and contribution. Every aspect of community life should be accessible to people of all abilities. Last year the Palaszczuk Government announced the Queensland: an agefriendly community action plan. This report took into consideration the views of seniors across the state to help them get the most out of the community. Representatives from senior groups across Forest Lake shared their feedback which helped to create the action plan. This is a great example of community input and after meeting with local representatives from senior groups, I was pleased to see their concerns reflected in the government’s report going forward. With nearly one-in-five Queenslanders having a disability, it’s essential that our community engages with the ‘Towards an all abilities Queensland’ consultation paper, like we did with the age-friendly community action plan. I want our new disability plan to be an ‘all abilities’ strategy that accurately reflects the valuable contribution Queenslanders with a disability make to our communities, our economy and our state. Help us shape Queensland’s next disability plan. Have your say until Friday 10 February at www.qld. gov.au/allabilitiesqueensland.

Crochet group still growing three years on Members of Forest Lake Crochet Group, after celebrating their three year milestone at the end of last year, are excited to be relocating to a new venue this year. Making their home at the newly developed Forest Lake Uniting Church premises, the group of over 35 crocheters and knitters will continue to meet each Thursday from 9am - noon at the Waterford Road location. Group co-ordinator, Sue Gibbons, said the members continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of the Forest Lake community. “Without the donations of wool, crochet squares, completed rugs and other assorted items, we wouldn’t be able to continue giving to others in need. “There are many people who have helped us help others,” said Sue. “In particular, I would like to thank a lady called Vicki who placed into our wool donation box outside of Woolworths at the shopping centre, a gift for each one of our members, along with a handmade Christmas card. It was such an amazing thing to do and all of us were so incredibly touched by this lovely gesture. “Then there is Kerry who donated a teapot and cozy for us to raffle, and thanks must also go to an anonymous crocheter who regularly places completed rugs into our donation box. The last one that was donated was given to a cancer patient who was very appreciative of the gift. “I would also like to give special mention to the Forest Lake Men’s Shed who built us a new fantastic donation box in record time. “The support and encouragement we get from the Forest Lake community is just outstanding. We have such a great time when we get together each week and it’s wonderful to know that what we do can help so many others. “So, a big thank you to all those who have donated over the last three years. We hope you like our new box and continue to fill it like you’ve always done!” If you’re interested in going along to the crochet group, where all levels of skill are welcomed, call Sue on 3279 9561.

Just as you look after your teeth to prevent dental disease, you also have to care for your pet’s teeth too. Maintaining healthy gums is important and is the starting point of any dental care program. The gums protect the underlying tissues and jawbone that anchor and support the teeth in your pet’s mouth. Gum disease is started by a build up of plaque. Plaque is made up of food particles, saliva and bacteria. It sticks to the tooth surface and if not removed will calcify into tartar (or calculus). This takes place above and below the gum line and over time causes periodontal disease and the destruction of the supportive tissues around the teeth and jawbone. More than 85% of dogs and cats over four years old have some form of periodontal disease. Look out for the signs of bad breath, discoloured teeth, loose teeth, pawing at the mouth, bleeding gums, receding gums, dental abscesses and reluctance to chew or eat that may alert you to the presence of this disorder. Teeth will always be checked by your vet from an early age at regular health checks. How do I prevent gum disease? It’s easy...good oral hygiene! Most dogs will respond well to the inclusion of chewy bones in their diet such as split beef bones, lamb necks and shanks or brisket flaps, combined with biscuits and daily brushing if required. Small dogs and cats prefer raw chicken wings and chewy biscuits. If your pet will not chew bones or they cause any concerns (such as vomiting, constipation) then consult your vet for the best options. There are a number of specific dental care products available that will further minimise plaque. Small, soft toothbrushes and pet toothpaste can be used to brush the gum line or chews with impregnated with a plaque preventative can be used as a cleansing treat daily. Solutions mixed with drinking water daily are also useful. Despite the best dental care program, most pets will still need to have their teeth professionally cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaning unit and a dental polisher by their vet. This is because pets cannot brush their mouth clean twice daily. Your vet will advise when this is necessary at your pet’s regular checkups as some need more attention than others. Often when dental disease is discovered, permanent damage is already done and teeth may need removal. If your pet is prone to dental disease, treatment and maintenance at an early stage may save teeth.

ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N
E
So why Scouts? We often hear from parents who have held off putting their child in Scouting “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” Most parents don’t understand what Scouting is about, and how it can benefit their child. As we head back into a new year of Scouting, we thought it would be a great opportunity to share with you why we love it so much. Scouting is about diversity! It does not matter if your child is good at sports, if they are a budding computer genius or an aspiring Broadway star, Scouting has something for every single person - young and old. Here are just a few: Spirtual Growth. In an age where more and more young people are feeling lost and confused, it is important for them to understand that there is something bigger than themselves. Whether your spiritual belief is in a God, several Gods, no God (Buddhist , atheists etc), Scouting encourages young people to think outside of themselves and develop their own faith system. Physical. We encourage young people to be active and get out and about. Intellect. With activities relating to Science, IT, handicraft, woodwork, engineering, weather etc there is always something interesting to investigate. Emotional. Scouting has a zero tolerance policy toward bullying, and we actively promote acceptance and inclusion for everybody. Sometimes, young people find it hard to make friends and just need a little help to find that place that they fit in. There is always room at Scouts for one more. Social. Where do we start? Scouts are limited only by their imaginations. This is not just for the adventurous. Scouts are young people and love to do the same things all young people love, be that movies, skating, ice skating, dinner at Maccas, trips to farms, beach/pool outings, shopping in the city or just hanging out. We also offer: Performing Arts. Did you know that Scouts Qld presents a huge stage production every year called Gang Show? Last year, over 100 youth members aged from eight to 25 rehearsed for months before performing in a series of shows during the July school holiday, learning stage craft, singing, dancing, acting etc. Even for adults, the Gang Show experience is fun and provides the perfect opportunity to be involved, while making new friends. There is always a need for help in wardrobe, backstage, small props, catering, administration etc. Adventurous Activities. Abseiling, canoe, kayak, sailing, rock climbing, hiking, flying...the list goes on and on. Scouting is able to provide access to try a huge variety of adventurous activities under the guidance of skilled instructors. Character development. The Scout method of learning by doing ensures that each youth member is able to grow and learn at their own rate to become the very best they can be. We encourage youth members to try new experiences, succeed, grow, support each other to reach their goals and grow in self esteem, confidence and skills. Leadership. Scouting is structured to provide endless opportunities for every youth member to develop leadership skills and think creatively. We develop small group teamwork skills and creative problem solving. Scouts Australia is also a Registered Training Organisation, meaning the training adult Leaders receive can lead to a VET qualification. Outdoors. Whether your child loves camping and/or is passionate about the environment, we can offer them the opportunity to develop skills necessary to participate in outdoor activities while having fun and making friends. Visual reward. Of course, having a visual award scheme (badges) is always very exciting for youth members. For adults, the visual rewards come from being able to actually see the growth and development of our youth members as their skills and confidence build. Fun. All of the above activities and aims are delivered in a fun and enjoyable way. Why not bring your child along for a few weeks to try Scouting and see for yourself? FROM THE DESK OF
Annastacia Palaszczuk MPP STATE MEMBER FOR INAL A
Back to School As another school year gets underway, I want to wish teachers, staff, parents and students from Forest Lake and the surrounds all the best for the term ahead. With students returning to schools across our community, I urge all residents to take special care on the roads in school zones. Remember the speed limit is 40km per hour in designated areas between 7-9am and 2-4pm. It’s important that we all do our part to keep safe on the roads this year. Electricity concessions Federal changes to the pension asset threshold mean thousands of Queensland seniors could lose their part pension entitlement or Pensioner Concession Card. My government has stepped in to protect our seniors, by extending our electricity rebates to include all Health Care Card holders. We have also guaranteed that all Queensland Seniors Card holders will continue to access the electricity rebate of up to $330 per household per year. These measures offer eligible seniors some cost of living relief and recognise the contributions they have made to our community and local economy over their lifetimes. Queensland Training Awards My government is committed to growing a strong vocational education and training (VET) sector to help job seekers acquire the skills they need. Nominations are now open for the 2017 Queensland Training Awards, which recognise organisations’ excellence in training delivery and celebrates the efforts of individuals. I urge all eligible apprentices, trainees, VET students, teachers and trainers, employers, training providers and community-based organisations from the Forest Lake area to take part in these awards. For nomination details and a full list of categories for 2017 visit www.qta.qld.gov.au. If you require assistance or are interested in connecting with local organisations, please feel free to contact my Electorate Office on 3737 2100 or email inala@parliament.qld.gov.au. You can also pop into the office at Richlands Plaza to speak with my staff, who are more than willing to help with your queries.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The clubs first game for 2107 was held at Wolston Park on 15th January with a fabulous turnout of 35 members playing. An early tee-off at 6:30am meant we were able to beat the hottest part of the day. The motorized carts certainly were a great help to avoid the heat! With the course in generally pretty good condition, there were some great results posted. The Club’s next game will be held on the 19th February at Windaroo Lakes with a field of 32 players expected to tee off by 6:50 am. We are hoping the cooler weather has arrived by then, but in any case it should be another great day. The following game will be held at Pacific Harbour Golf Club on Bribie Island on March 19 with a 7:30 am tee time. For anyone who is interested in joining our club, please contact Pat on 0417 213 659; or like ‘Forest Lake Social Golf Club’ on our Facebook Page and register your interest there. When starting a new business, the question is often asked whether it would be better to form a company or operate as a sole trader or some form of trust. This question can depend on several factors but let us suppose for the purposes of this article that the small private company structure is adopted. It is important to remember that whilst you may be the only shareholder of the company with $1 of share capital, the company is for both legal and tax purposes quite a different entity from yourself. People sometimes have the view that they can just draw money out of the company and spend it as they wish because it is “my moneyâ€?. This is simply not correct. Principally there are three ways in which money can be distributed to you from a company. Two of them involve the payment of dividends, hopefully with tax credits attached, and a distribution which is to be regarded as a loan to shareholders with various tricky tax and financial consequences attached. However, the most common method is by means of a salary as if you are an employee of your own company. There are a few things to bear in mind here. If the company deposits say $1,000 per week into your personal bank account, don’t assume $52,000 is your salary for annual tax purposes. Sometimes the correct treatment of PAYGW tax is overlooked, or the tax is paid on the $52,000. Of course, if you were employed elsewhere, the amount appearing in your bank account is your after-tax salary. It is therefore necessary to gross up the payment (a weekly wage of $1,280 would result in tax being paid of $280 for a net amount of $1,000), such that after paying the tax you are left with $52,000 for the year. Far better to agree with the company (even though it is sort of an agreement with yourself) a gross wage and calculate the tax and remit to the ATO with your BAS, assuming you have registered the company for PAYGW. Also, in the above case don’t forget that superannuation must be paid at 9.5% on the gross amount not the amount received in your bank account. Again, it is sometimes forgotten that payment of compulsory superannuation is an obligation for all employing entities, and the fact that the employee and the shareholder are the same does not abrogate this. Penalties for non-payment of superannuation are best avoided!
Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach
It is another new year and a new beginning for the Probus Club of Forest Lake as it moved into a new venue viz. the Uniting Church Hall in Waterford Road. The smiling faces of all members, as they settled into the air-conditioned new venue, was reminiscent of students returning to school after the Christmas break and keen to tell about their holiday adventures. There was a tinge of sadness though as Shirley thanked members for their support upon ANNELIE HUGHES MCouns QCA (Clinical) PACFA Reg. the demise of her daughter. Provider Judith W, ably assisted by Val, provided a scrumptious ARCAP Reg. ACA (Level 4) morning tea and served by Carmel. Una was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Newsletter PH: 3278 9625 or 0409 789 625 Editor Brian in appreciation for her proof reading skills. He also thanked Zoe. Brian then gave a brief history of the overseas origin of Probus which was interspersed with his own creative limericks. He then concentrated on the subject close to his heart which is risk management as he was responsible for the Club’s Policy and its writing thereof. Brian gave the audience a thumbnail sketch to the origins and concept of Risk Management and its importance to our Club. It could be traced back to a previous Prime Minister, Bob Hawke and the insurance companies and what all that meant for the layman. It is important to foresee problems and take the necessary preventive action. Both President John and Secretary Barb as well as Brian, made a request to all Probians to volunteer talents to serve on the new Committee so the Club can remain vital and healthy and serve the expectations and needs of all its members. Remember ‘Expect the best! It lies not in & the past’ (Poet W.P. Merrill) and thus an invitation is extended to all retirees and semi-retirees to pay the Probus Club a visit the second Tuesday of the month at 10 am, Uniting Church Hall Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. The next meeting is the 14th February, Valentines Day. Friends: Try something new for fun, frolic and companionship with a dash of some refreshment. For more information contact Membership Officer Shirley on 3879 9421 or President John on 3372 1270.

,V QRZ WKH WLPH WR Ă€[ \RXU KRPH ORDQ" A lot has happened in the mortgage market over the last couple of months, with several lenders lifting the interest rates across their suite of home loan products. Moving forward, many economists believe rates will rise further this year, with the Reserve Bank of Australia widely expected to lift rates at some point within the next 12 months. With this in mind, it is clear that the bottom of the rate cycle may soon be behind us. As such, now really is the perfect time to review your current ďŹ nancial situation and make sure you are still in the right product for your needs. Whether you’ve been in your mortgage for a few months or a few years, the start of a new year is always the ideal time to compare lenders and investigate what deals are available. With some lenders offering ďŹ xed rates below 4% p.a., you may ďŹ nd that now is the perfect time to ďŹ x part or all of your mortgage.
Is ďŹ xing right for you? A ďŹ xed rate will not only help you to avoid any future rate rises, but it will also provide you with some surety around your regular mortgage repayments. Over the past few months, we’ve seen an increase in the number of people locking into a ďŹ xed rate mortgage. According to the latest data from Mortgage Choice, 19.5% of all home loans written in November were ďŹ xed – up from 17.4% the month prior. By ďŹ xing your home loan, you can lock yourself into a low and stable rate for a certain period of time. This rate will not be affected by any rate changes that happen in the market. Furthermore, you will know exactly how much your repayments will be, meaning you can plan your ďŹ nances ahead of time and maintain your current standard of living.
Expert home loan advice at no cost for you. Of course, before you make any decisions and potentially reďŹ nance into a ďŹ xed rate mortgage, it’s worth speaking with a mortgage professional. Your local Mortgage Choice broker can help you investigate what home loan options are available and help you decide whether or not reďŹ nancing is the right ďŹ nancial move for you.
So why not give Mortgage Choice a call today and see if you are still in the right product for your needs?

I WAS ONLY 18 In June, 1965, 11 months after graduating from the RAAF School of Technical Training as an electrical fitter aged just 18 years and nine months, Stuart Bradley, current President of the Forest Lake RSL Sub branch, was sent to Viet Nam, three weeks before the arrival of No 1 RAR Battalion, to be part of RAAF Transport Flight Viet Nam. Based in Vung Tau, he serviced RAAF Caribou aircraft that assisted in troop and logistical movements over the length and breadth of Viet Nam. Though based in a relatively safe environment, there were times when aircraft having broken down in remote, insecure areas needed to be repaired. “One time I was flown to a US Special Forces base in the highlands, to repair one aircraft, Bradley said. “The Commanding Officer was concerned that two RAAF aircraft on an airstrip that had been rocketed the night before was a prime target for the enemy. Fortunately, we were able to fix the problem and make it back safely. On completion of his tour of duty, Stuart returned to the Caribou Squadron based at RAAF Richmond. Dearly wanting to return to Viet Nam, he applied for the Vietnamese Interpreters’ Course at RAAF School of Languages, graduating at the completion of the course. Four years to the day from his original arrival, Stuart was back in Viet Nam, at the same base in Vung Tau. This time his role was that of a liaison between the 120 local employees of the RAAF and their RAAF supervisors. This involved employment issues, dealing with local security authorities, local purchases, resolving disputes, and civil aid matters. “Anything, from birth to death, literally, could come up. One day I had to drive a nine months’ pregnant lady to the hospital, in a jeep over bumpy roads; another time I took a worker to see her fatally wounded husband at a military hospital to which she was not allowed access. It was a privilege to assist in a World Vision sponsored school, a local youth group, and the English Teaching programme run by the Vietnamese-Allied Cultural Centre. After his discharge, Stuart has been involved in local churches, refugee resettlement, Viet Nam Veterans Counselling Service, and the local RSL. “I can only say I thank God for the experience He has given me, and count it a privilege currently to give something back to the local community through the service with the RSL.

With 2017 now underway, I’d like to wish all the best to students who are just returning to school. For our Prep students it will be the first time they’ve entered the school gates, while Grade 6 students find themselves in their last year of primary school. Year 7 students will begin their high school journey and for year 12’s it will be the final year of schooling before heading off to further study, work or perhaps even some time abroad. We have wonderful schools throughout the Oxley electorate with hardworking teachers and staff who do a tremendous job. To ensure every child is given the quality education they deserve, it’s important that schools are given the appropriate resources they need. When I visit schools throughout the electorate, I’m constantly told about the importance of needs based funding. Principals, teachers and parents all tell me about the big difference this makes for students and how critical it is. Needs based funding means schools can hire extra teachers to help students in the classroom, order new materials or even provide more resources. For Oxley schools this means an extra $20 million over 2017-18. This allows schools to provide a strong focus on every child’s needs whilst delivering more individual attention for students. Teachers are able to be given extra training and more support for students with a disability and additional learning needs. Every dollar makes a difference and I’ll be working to see that each and every Oxley school is given the funding it needs. If you would like to share your story about how needs based funding is making a difference to your school or child, please contact my office on 3879 6440 or send me an email Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au. I look forward to visiting schools throughout the year and working closely with principals and teachers. Good luck to all students for a great 2017.

With the festive season and holidays now over and just a wonderful memory, the children returning for another year at school, and the traffic problems continue, I suppose one would say ‘life is returning to normal!’ What a hot January we had! Our electricity bills will be increased from using air conditioners in an effort to keep cool but what about your garden? At least the last couple of weeks of the month brought some good rain to fill up our tanks. The Christmas break-up was a roaring success because of the tremendous effort that the committee and other members put in to make sure that everyone had a wonderful end of year function. We had more members than expected and had to send out for a few more supplies. The lovely chicken and salad lunch was presented in a timely manner thanks to Margaret Koenitzer and her team of helpers who enjoyed working in their new kitchen. The two Christmas cakes, made by Helena Boyce, provided a delightful dessert and there were gifts and bowls of sweets on the tables to enjoy while we were entertained with carols by members of The Forest Lake Community Choir. The new hall received a thumbs up from all who were there on the day and we are looking forward to this year in our new facilities. Presenting a bunch of cut roses is the traditional way of celebrating Valentine’s Day but a potted rose plant that will live for many years is a far more appropriate way to acknowledge a long-lasting commitment. Red roses are always the number one choice for Valentine’s Day. Other roses available with Valentine-friendly names are Angel Face, Best Friend, My Hero, Seduction or Sentimental. I’m sure you will find the appropriate rose for your friend. Watch for the details of our upcoming bus trips and open garden visits. The first bus trip will be in April and if you have not received a flyer contact Jill (mobile 0403 002 143) or Heather (phone 3879 2129) and one will be sent to you. During the break, Juli Horewood has been busy organising a wide range of interesting guest speakers for the year. Some of the interesting topics are Bizarre and Beautiful Plants, Birds of South-east Queensland and the bee man just to name a few. A full list and dates is published in our monthly newsletter aptly titled The Good Dirt. I hope to see you at our meetings and share a cuppa. Visitors are most welcome.
We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

If you’re new to Forest Lake, or just want to extend your social network, this is a great opportunity to meet new people, make friends and enjoy some friendly conversation.
Now that the school holidays are over and school is back, it’s a timely reminder that the school zones across the Ward will be very busy and drivers should be vigilant at all times. I’m delighted to see so many residents are making use of Brisbane City Council’s fantastic libraries. I would encourage all residents to visit our Ward Library in Inala and also take advantage of the Mobile and Street Libraries in Forest Lake. Litter pick-up will continue this month and I can report the litter reduction around the lake and on the boulevard has been undertaken by two community groups: Forest Lake Lions and the Lake Parklands Litter Prevention Team. Everyone is welcome to join us for our first 2017 Litter pickup and children’s scavenger hunt this month on February 20, 8am, Lake Stage, Forest Lake Boulevard. Clean Up Australia Day is also just around the corner. Forest Lake Lions is organising a big clean up with many of our community groups, schools and residents. It will take place on the Sunday 5 March. If you would to participate, please join a Forest Lake team at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au. On Australia Day I was honoured to officiate at the Inala Citizenship Ceremony and induct so many wonderful citizens. I was able to continue the proud tradition of this special event that former Councillor’s Milton Dick and Les Bryant had done for many years. I also wanted to thank the Forest Lake Mens Shed for continuing to work hard in the community and for making amazing work of art. The flag poles they made for our local Lions Club to use at the Citizenship Ceremony look marvellous. This team did everything they could to ensure they had them in time for this years ceremony. My office is always ready to take any concerns or questions about any Brisbane City Council issue, so please feel free to contact them on 3407 1211.

Forest Lake Lions Club by Kim Grierson Update The Lions Club of Forest Lake has a school based Leos club at St Johns Anglican College who perform community activities and help out with Lions Projects. Belonging to a Leos club helps young people develop leadership and public speaking skills, event management and other important skills such as an understanding of the community in which they live. With the new school year commencing, a new Leo’s board is in place and they are looking forward to working with the Forest Lake community. The executive for the coming year is: Egan Sun Bin (President); Nikki Ly (VP and special projects); Zoe Christofis (Secretary); and Olivia Sanders (Treasurer). A Leo planning day was held in January and focussed on guest speakers and fund raising activities for the coming year. President Leo Egan expressed many new exciting ideas for this school year. If you would like any further information on Leo’s please contact Leo Adviser Lion April on 0402 287 066. If you would like more information about the club (including membership) please call our membership chair Stuart on 0418 735 190.
MTR have proven that a kiosk can be something truly extraordinary.... “The most amazing attribute that stood out for me with their kiosk was that MTR was breaking the customer service mould - MTR had told consumers how they wanted to engage before the consumer even knew it them self – Just pure innovation!” (Rod Facey REIQ Finance and Corporate Services Manager) The inception of a kiosk to represent the company was the brainchild of Marilyn Thurtell, whose vision has propelled MTR into the future of the Real Estate industry. In the first of its kind initiative, moving the business from a traditional office to a kiosk situated at the heart of a busy shopping centre in November 2014, thrust the company into the forefront of real estate in Forest Lake, and brought the business face-to-face with the public. Seeing the community up close and personal in the Forest Lake Shopping Centre has been a giant leap into developing relationships within the Centre and the greater community. At the kiosk, MTR staff see clients in a completely different setting. The team hears about their weekends, or things that are affecting their everyday life. The MTR team are readily available to offer any advice or information people may need in regards to buying or selling property, and in many cases, just to listen. Featuring a state-of-the-art interface between clients and MTR services, the kiosk positioned at the heart of the Forest Lake Shopping Centre, is situated in a prime, high traffic flow area with hundreds of passers-by and numerous touch-points daily. The kiosk has a high visual appeal to passers-by and utilises modern technology for ease of information dissemination. MTR is always a just a phone call away. The MTR kiosk’s latest technological offering is the new red phone on the counter you can simply pick up the handset to be connected to one of the MTR Team OR Dial 07 3271 2595 and your call will be answered 24/7. When Rod Facey, REIQ Finance and Corporate Services Manager visited the kiosk he noted “I discovered that some of the key attributes of a successful small business such as being future focussed, curious, tech-savvy and action oriented were all present in the MTR business model. Marilyn and her team deliver this in spades and achieve small business outcomes and personalised service in a high profile and highly visible environment, and sure, whilst kiosks have been around since the dawn of time, the concept of delivering professional support for the biggest asset in anyone’s life through this business model is truly unique.”
