Personally Speaking And yet again we find ourselves at the beginning of another year. Is it full of hope and expectancy for you? Or are you dreading it, feeling like you’re Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, except it’s a whole year’s worth of the same thing instead of just one day? I’m not big on new years resolutions. Of course, I have goals and plans for things I want to do each year but I usually steer clear of making any ‘resolutions’ as such. They just never seem to stick and all that happens is that I end up feeling lousy about myself and even more unmotivated than before! Last year, I did decide on two very specific things though. One was to do a ‘Grateful Book’ (tick!) and the other was to be intentional about seeing the people I want to see more of. While it didn’t pan out with all the people I had in mind, it did with some. And so I came to the end of 2016 after working two jobs and studying AND having had the enjoyment and satisfaction of regularly seeing some of those I’d set out to intentionally catch up with. As the saying goes ‘the road to hell is paved with good intentions’. Intentions are meaningless without follow through but if you have intention, you at least have a better shot at success than if you have no intention at all! My intention to see people this past year meant that I didn’t just say the usual ‘oh we must catch up soon’. It caused me to actually pull out my diary (aka iphone calendar) and make a date right there and then with that person. And my intention to do a full year of grateful photos for my book meant that I intentionally looked for things to be grateful for, even on the days when nothing came immediately to mind. So, as I look down the barrel of another year working two jobs and studying, I think I’m going to give intentionality another go this year. And I’m going to expand it and apply it to a few other areas as well. The word intentional means ‘done on purpose, deliberate’. In the busyness that is our lives these days, I think we do need to be intentional about the things that are important to us. We need to have purpose and plan deliberately to spend time with those we love or on our favourite hobby, lest we get swept along and find ourselves at the end of another year having accomplished little that we actually wanted to accomplish. The beginning of a new year is the perfect time, as we all know, to start afresh, live in the moment and be intentional about where we invest our most valuable asset, our time. Won’t you join me in being more intentional this year? Imagine the sense of satisfaction and pleasure when, at the end of the year, you can look back and see the times where you intentionally invested in what was important to you. If you’d like to see the wrap-up of my grateful book, head to my blog and have a look - susannahfriis.com.

ROTARY CLUB of Greater Springfield
UPDATE BY Chris Steinback
This year the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield will host a number of activities to celebrate the centennial of The Rotary Foundation. The celebrations will include a Foundation Dinner where the club will celebrate and showcase the various programs supported by the Foundation to be held on the Foundations birthday in February. In May, the Club will host a gala cocktail evening at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club to promote and fundraise for the Alzheimer’s association. In the meantime, the Club will continue to support local community, disaster aid, Polio eradication and district grant projects with ongoing funding and assistance. The Foundation is the $1 billion charitable arm of Rotary International. To mark the centennial, Rotary aims to raise $300 million by July 2017 for its campaign to eradicate polio and for service in communities around the world. Established in 1917 with a donation of $26.50, The Rotary Foundation is dedicated to advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace. Through grants and other resources, Rotary members develop sustainable projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, support education, save mothers and children, and grow local economies. Rotary’s top priority is the global eradication of polio. Rotary launched its polio immunization program, PolioPlus, in 1985 and in 1988 became a leading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative along with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and more recently, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary is doing such incredible work and we at the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield are indeed excited that this year may be known as the greatest year in our history. The year that sees the world’s last case of Polio. Rotary has contributed more than $1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours to eradicate polio. Through 2018, every dollar Rotary committed to polio eradication will be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, up to $35 million a year. Since the initiative began, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to less than 71 confirmed in 2015. Rotary brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members of more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work improves lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world. For more information, visit Rotary.org. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Thursday evening at 6.30pm at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, 1 Tournament Drive, Brookwater. For enquiries, contact Club President Chris Steinback on 0411 472 684.

Now a Compounding Pharmacy Cancer Council Queensland is seeking cancer survivors to take part in a world-first research project this year, investigating whether peer-support can assist with exercise maintenance and health after a cancer diagnosis. The study, conducted by Cancer Council Queensland and the University of Queensland, will assess men and women who have previously been treated for breast, bowel or prostate cancer. Those who wish to contribute to the study can do so either as a peer support volunteer or as a participant. Both roles involve being part of a supportive exercise program over a 12-month period. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift encouraged locals affected by breast, bowel or prostate cancer to get involved to make a difference. “Research plays a key role in advancing cancer care in Queensland and aims to reduce the burden of the disease on those affected, Ms Clift said. “This is a great opportunity for those who want to help motivate recent cancer survivors to improve their health and at the same time you’ll also improve your own health and wellbeing. The project will help to vastly improve the long-term health outcomes of cancer survivors and will help to inform the development of a customised program. “We know that physical activity after cancer treatment can improve quality of life and wellbeing, along with reducing treatment-related side-effects. Current evidence also shows that physical activity reduces the risk of cancer recurrence. While the value of contribution to this study will be high, the time commitment is less than two hours each week. Exercise will mostly be performed on specially designed stationary bikes. Participants are required to commit to the duration of the study and will receive assessment sessions after five weeks, three months, six months and 12 months. “Everyone who takes part will be given a free 12-month gym membership at Healthstream Fitness Centre, Kelvin Grove. Additional benefits include regular assessment of fitness level, body composition, bone density and cardiovascular health, and exercise guidance from an accredited exercise physiologist, Ms Clift said. “A supportive team will also be on hand to give practical advice and tips on staying motivated that will benefit you long after the study ends. To find out more, or express interest in getting involved, visit peersupportandexercise.com or phone Cancer Council Queensland on 13 11 20. For more information about Cancer Council Queensland, visit cancerqld.org.au.

Help save our local flora and fauna Local resident Kemp Killerby created the group Flora 4 Fauna – Australia after seeing the displacement of many birds and animals in the local area. Kemp, who has an extensive work history in agriculture, invites the residents of Greater Springfield and surrounding areas to make the most of this community based service and help rebalance the environmental scales once again. “It doesn’t take much to make a difference,” said Kemp. “We planted a range of native plants in our garden when we bought our house a few years ago, and now we have approximately 19 different birds species visit on a regular basis with up to 56 different species of butterflies, insects and other invertebrates making the most of their new habitat. It feels great to be doing something proactive!” Even if you are renting a house or live in an apartment with a balcony, many native Australian bushfoods and pollinator attracting host plants, such as native limes, native raspberries and native lemongrass can be successfully grown in pots and planter boxes. This not only helps to offset the local deforestation, it ensures the survival of indigenous flora, provides habitat and sustenance for the native fauna and simultaneously provides a nutritious food source for those who plant and care for them. With years of practical experience in the horticultural industry Kemp states that most native plants are incredibly easy to care for and maintain. Once established, many can rely upon the annual rainfall and require minimal amount of inputs, such as fertiliser and soil preparation while providing maximum outputs in the form of food, natural medicine and habitat. “Many people think that bushfood is ‘survival food’, however, in recent years, people are realising that we are spoilt for choice in South-East Queensland and that there is a feast for the senses, just waiting to be discovered.” Flora 4 Fauna – Australia hosts regular native plant sales, bushfood tastings, walks and talks on various environmental subjects and interpretive eco tours, which are all geared towards providing the community with an opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna in the local environment, which in some cases (according to scientists), have existed in South-East Queensland for the past 65 million years. “We have been getting a lot of positive feedback about the plants we provide growing like crazy. Unlike exotic species, our native Australian plants have had millions of years to adapt to the harsh and unpredictable Australian environment and therefore, green thumb or not, success in the garden is guaranteed! “We urge people to think twice the next time they buy a plant and to always consider doing good for the local flora, fauna and environment by planting a native Australian plant species.” For more information about Flora 4 Fauna – Australia and their events and activities, go to www.facebook.com/Flora4FaunaQLD/ or send an email to flora4faunaqld@gmail.com.

The Orion Carols at Robelle Domain regarded as best carols night ever
The Orion Carols at Robelle Domain organised by the Greater Springfield Combined Churches held last December was, by all accounts, a huge success. Cr David Morrison said he has received many comments from people indicating that this was the best Carols night that they had ever attended anywhere. “We are very much appreciative of all the sponsors who give to make this event possible particularly Orion Springfield Central, USQ, AVEO and Ipswich City Council. “I estimate between five and six thousand attended and enjoyed the night, including the finale of a magnificent fireworks display courtesy of All fired Up Fireworks.” Planning for this year’s carols night has already begun.

THE CREATIVE heART by Jolanta Szymczyk As the summer break comes to the end and we shape up and finalise our plans, dreams and goals for the next busy year, we often forget to plan for time with our families, friends or just ourselves. Creativity has many faces...from formal training and practice to the moments of stillness to observe the beauty and life around us, the singing bird in the morning, the onset of summer’s nature voices, the smell of the garden after the rain or the freshness of food prepared or shared with the people around us. Creativity is nurtured by being attentive to the little moments of joy and happiness, through the pains and sorrows of loss or grief and the joy of rebuilding shattered dreams. It has its own flow and cycles, like every other stage in life. Creativity grows from small and big acts of practice...perhaps a daily drawing, a sketch or a small item being made or created, a brief note or an entry in a journal, a cake being made with extra love and care, a sandwich served for the hungry ones, the colour of the leaf that just caught your eye on your daily walk...or a large project of your own. Creativity grows from being observant of the world around us, a reflection on the day just gone or a small celebration that we are here, living the moment, just being. As the new year is unfolding, make time for your own small act of kindness to yourself and your own need to create, make, aspire, and grow and share the joy of creativity with others. Don’t know where to start? Look for your local creative networks or groups and don’t miss monthly Greater Springfield Creative HeART’s group meeting or perhaps investigate options of becoming an exhibiting and gallery member of Inspiration Ipswich, a local artist co-operative or other creative options in the area. Motto for 2017: Create. Share. Enjoy. Keep in touch locally via ww.facebook.com/GSCreativeHub/ and www.facebook.com/InspirationsIpswich/.

Council parks spokesman Councillor David Morrison said. “The mountain biking trials are among the best in the state and the reserve itself recently won an award at the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Awards. The new-look reserve, which was purchased by council for $1 in 2014, is a credit to the community. The Castle Hill Trails Alliance played an important part in rehabilitating the trails and bushland, dedicating hundreds of hours to the area. The launch of the new recreational space last year also celebrated the birthday of Lewis Thomas, known locally as the ‘Coal King’, who owned the former Aberdare Colliery and castle Brynhyfryd which occupied the reserve site from 1890 to 1936, with some of Lewis’s descendants joining in on the festivities. Why not explore Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve one weekend? With mountain bike trails ranging from easy to very difficult, the Castle Hill tracks have something for all levels of rider, with options such as the gently rolling Blackleg Gully Circuit or the more advance rollercoasterstyle trail, the Inca. For those interested in the historical significance of the area, the walk along the Lewis Thomas Historical Trail will see you exploring the coal mining history of the reserve as you pass open mine tunnels, hand-dug mine shafts and relics of the imposing three storey ‘Castle’ which once towered over Blackstone. Situated at 7 Mary Street, Blackstone, the newly refurbished Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve should be noted for a fun weekend outing this year.

Summer is definitely here. For most of us it means beach trips and BBQ’s with friends. It also brings much hotter weather and the chance of bushfires. Preparation for bushfire season should be a year-round task, but if you haven’t started yet, here are some tips to help as a guide and remember it’s never too late to make preparations to protect your home and family. 1. Trees and plants provide fuel for fires. Remove the build up of dead branches, bark or shrubs 2. If you’re planting a garden, plant trees away from the house so limbs and branches don’t hang over your roof and drop leaves in gutters. These can ignite quickly if burning embers fall on them. 3. Clean leaves from your roof, gutters and downpipes 4. Remove all flammable material that is within 20 metres of your property. This includes flammable liquids and newspapers or cardboard that you have stockpiled for recycling. There are also a number of items that can help in a bushfire situation: • During a bushfire, power and water may be cut off and this often happens in advance. A small power generator will allow your family access to small appliances and allow laptops and phones to continue to be charged. • Portable battery radios allow people to listen to news updates. • Good quality torches and long life batteries are imperative. • Packed bag with fresh clothes which can be easily carried. • A quality high-pressure fire fighting pump to help with any small spot fires and to water your garden/foliage on your property in preparation. If you do live in a bushfire zone, organise a bushfire plan with your family and make sure everyone knows what it is, where they need to go if they get separated and what items they can grab quickly if they are forced to evacuate. If families take the time to make the necessary preparations they will have a better chance to keep their home and family safe this bushfire season.
Goodna/Springfield
Probus Club Update by Gwen Wise Welcome to the first update of the New Year for the Probus Club of Goodna-Springfield. 2016 was a great year for the club, with numbers increasing to over 50 ladies and gentlemen who all enjoy each others company. A good showing of members enjoyed our very popular coffee morning with a visit to the tranquil Brookwater Golf Club, the cool green surroundings being much appreciated, so much so that it will again be our venue in January. Lunch at the Jindalee Hotel was enjoyed by all who were able to attend, although at the busiest time of the year sometimes ‘something’s gotta give’, and we were a smaller number than usual. The final outing of the year, to the Caboolture Historical Village, was a great success, with air-conditioned, comfortable train travel making this a very relaxing and affordable day out. The village is supported by an army of volunteers who are passionate about the history of the area and maintain the village in immaculate condition. It covers a large area of gardens and shade trees and as well as the more commonplace homes and stores boasts many more unusual buildings, including a hospital, school, gaol, council chambers and railway station, all just as they were when they were functioning buildings. The beautiful wooden church, relocated from elsewhere in Caboolture, is a popular wedding venue today, and a café with excellent food and a complimentary shuttle bus to Caboolture Station add to the overall experience of a fantastic day out. Our annual Christmas party was an outstanding success, worthy of a column all to itself, so I will save that until next month’s update. There will be no Probus meeting in January, but we meet again at 1.30pm on Wednesday 1 February at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse, Bruce Lane, Camira. If your New Year Resolutions include making new friends and enjoying new experiences, then come along and join us. We welcome both ladies and gentlemen, the only criteria being that you must be retired or semi-retired. Please ring Penny on 3818 7981 for more details. It only remains for me to wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe New Year.

Happy New Year and welcome back for 2017. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and found time to spend with family and friends. In particular, I’d like to wish a very happy Lunar New Year to our Vietnamese, Chinese and Korean Communities as we celebrate the year of the rooster. People born in the year of the rooster are said to be hardworking, resourceful and courageous. During 2016 I held multiple mobile offices throughout the electorate and will be doing so again this year. It’s always great to meet with locals and hear their concerns, ideas and opinions for how we can make our community even better. I always value the input of residents and encourage you to drop by one of the many mobile offices I’ll be running throughout the year to have your say. One of the topics I receive consistent feedback about is the upgrade of the Ipswich Motorway. Since being elected I’ve been fighting to see this happen as quickly as possible. I spoke in Parliament just last month about the importance of this critical upgrade and the benefits to the wider community. I’m pleased to report that preliminary works are scheduled to begin early this year on the Darra to Rocklea section of the motorway. Once completed this will ease congestion and reduce the amount of time spent in traffic for motorists. It was also wonderful to congratulate another round of young sporting champions recently. We have such a great depth of talented young people in our community who excel in their sporting pursuits. Congratulations to Rowan from Springfield Lakes, Noah from Forest Lake, Amelia from Bellbird Park and all the other recipients of the local sporting champions grant. If you’re aged between 12 -18 and are travelling further than 125km to participate in a sporting event, visit www.aussport.gov.au to check if you’re eligible to apply for the next round of funding.

What’s on at Ipswich Civic Centre? The Roaring Twenties tells the story of VooVoo, a bubbly Australian railway heiress throwing a party to end all parties to celebrate her 21st birthday. Wide-eyed and intrigued by the stars of aviation, VooVoo is longing for adventure in the glamorous world of the Weimer Berlin cabaret, the American speakeasy and the Parisian Moulin Rouge. The Roaring Twenties is an immersive, interactive cabaret that promises to bring a taste of the delectable 20s hedonism to town. A spectacular evening of cabaret featuring a nod to the great icons and composers of the 20s: Josephine Baker, Greta Garbo, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Cole Porter and more. Come dressed in 20s style and become the speakeasy set celebrating the roaring twenties in a smoky, authentic experience of twenties hedonism.

He said, she said For the first time ever in their 10 years of marriage, comedians Stav Davidson (Hit105FM) and wife Kat (612ABC) will take to the stand-up comedy stage at the same time, sharing the best and worst moments of their love story, from his and her perspective. Stav and Kat have many things in common...they both love one another, they are both well-known TV and radio personalities, and they are both stand-up comedians but, like any husband and wife duo, there are some things they just don’t agree on.

The new year is a time to look forward but also a time to reflect on what has been achieved. We can do this both personally and collectively. I hope you achieve the objectives you set out as goals. All successful achievements will take discipline, perseverance and a healthy attitude.

Thank you to all the sponsors who gave so our community could come together to celebrate Christmas. Particular thanks are extended to Orion Springfield Central, USQ, AVEO and Ipswich City Council. I personally thank the Greater Springfield Combined Churches for working in unity to organise a very successful carols 2016. Now we start the process once again to plan for 2017 Community Carols.
Free Plants Remember every financial year all properties in Ipswich City are entitled to at least six free plants. The next mobile nursery to visit the Camira Springfield Community Centre is the first Saturday in March. If you want to collect plants beforehand, please check council’s website for opening hours of our nursery.
Mobile Library Council’s mobile library visits Orion Springfield Central every Thursday between 2pm and 7pm and every second Wednesday. The mobile library is stationed on Southern Cross Circuit between the Orion Lagoon and Orion Town Centre. On the alternative Wednesday, the library visits the Camira Springfield Community Centre on Old Logan Road between 2pm and 7pm. You can book any library resources online and the mobile library will bring it for you to collect.
2017 2017 will be another very exciting year with the opening and expansion of AVEO senior living, a brand new suburb of Spring Mountain being created, sports fields with lights, clubhouses, irrigation and parking, new parks will be opened, a permanent library will be constructed or leased in Springfield Central, more concrete footpaths, more kerb and channelling. I look forward to serving and representing our fantastic community for another year.
New Year’s thought 2017 is before us like a new chapter that has to be written. Write wisely.

We had our Christmas luncheon on 7 December at the Brothers League Club Raceview. Some of the ladies from our club, who are members of the Jacaranda Choir, entertained us by singing seven Christmas carols. They were very good and we all enjoyed singing along with them. The Christmas lunch was also very nice and enjoyed by everyone. Our last meeting of the year was 14 December and rather than a guest speaker, we had a break up party. All the members brought food in and what a lovely spread it was! The ladies from the choir entertained us again, capping off a wonderful day. I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year and encourage anyone interested to come along an join us for 2017. Simply give me a call on 3818 9343. Heat stress and your pet This is the time of year when we need to be mindful about the effects the hot weather can have on our pets. We have already seen some heat stress in Forest Lake since the start of the warm weather in December. Dogs and cats do not cope with heat as well as people. They are not able to dress to suit weather conditions since they have their furry coat permanently attached. Dogs with thicker and dark coats are more prone to heat stress. They cannot sweat to cool themselves as people do. Panting is used by animals instead of sweating and relies on exchange of cool outside air for warm body air. If the outside is not cooler, then panting is less efficient. Heat stroke is common in these conditions and occurs rapidly in situations like in a locked car but will occur in any poorly ventilated room or hot environment. These are the simple reasons - there are many others. It is known that dogs over eight years of age do not tolerate heat as well as younger animals and puppies under four weeks of age cannot regulate their body temperature. Care is needed with these age groups. Dogs with cardiovascular disease, obesity, with flat faces (eg the Bull Dog), respiratory disease, and poor physical condition are all candidates for heat stress. Heat stress can further complicate conditions such as concurrent illness or poisoning. It can also quickly lead to heat stroke that damages the brain and can be irreversible. Treatment involves the immediate reversal of the hyperthermia for heat stress and specific treatment to reduce brain swelling for heat stroke. Early recognition and emergency treatment is the key. Pet owners should spray their pets with water and fan them before and during transport to the clinic.
So remember your pet. Be sensible when you exercise, provide plenty of water and shade and think about a haircut for our long coated breeds. The pets we have recently seen with heat stress have had concurrent health problems. Try and keep these pets out of the heat and if possible in air conditioning. a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison
Springfield Lakes suburb almost complete In 2004 Summit Drive was being constructed. Where I took this photo there is now a Child Care Centre, a State School across the road, Spring Lake Village Shopping Centre below the Child Care and a well-loved park around Spring Lake. This year will see Lend Lease complete Springfield Lakes as a suburb and concentrate on the brand new suburb of Spring Mountain. As local councillor I have witnessed Springfield Lakes go from a population of zero to approximately 18 000 today.
I recall the very first blocks of land being created in Springfield Lakes by Delfin Lend Lease in the early 2000s. An image of Spring Lake was created for potential residents by Lend Lease placing large blue painted boulders around the dry gully that eventually would become Spring Lake.

Road safety program returns for 2017 A road safety program designed to improve parking around Ipswich schools will continue next year after a successful 2016 campaign. The latest round of council’s School Safe Parking Project involved 14 schools from 4 to 11 October, engaging with thousands of motorists during Term 4. Health and Community Safety Committee Chairwoman Councillor Sheila Ireland said the project offered an educational approach to road safety in pick-up and dropoff zones. “Council officers and police conducted foot patrols at schools during peak times, speaking to motorists about their parking behaviours,” she said. “As was the case with previous school terms, most illegal parking offences related to parking in loading zones and bus zones. “Speeding was also identified as an issue, particularly around Redbank Plains State High School.” Cr Ireland said the community awareness campaign encouraged education, communication and voluntary compliance. “The majority of motorists were happy to move on and complied with the instructions given to them,” she said. “All in all the feedback was very positive, so much so that an additional six schools want to get involved next year.” Term 4 schools included St Augustine’s College, Augusta State School, Springfield Central State High School, Springfield Central State School, St Peters Lutheran College.
